Auditory brainstem responses (ABRs), middle latency responses (MLRs), and slow cortical potentials (SCPs) were recorded in normal-hearing adults to trains of low-frequency acoustic signals delivered binaurally against a background of a continuous masking noise. Two stimulus conditions, labelled as binaural homophasic and binaural antiphasic paradigms, respectively, were systematically compared. In the homophasic paradigm both the signals and the masker were in-phase at two ears. In the antiphasic paradigm the signals were 180 degrees out-of-phase at two ears, while the masker was in-phase. The psychoacoustic release from masking in the antiphasic vs. the homophasic paradigm was regularly accompanied by an increase in amplitudes and a shortening in peak latencies of the SCPs. In contrast, no differences were evidenced between the homophasic and the antiphasic paradigms with respect to the ABRs and the MLRs. Considering the generation loci of the studied electric responses, it is concluded that the binaural psychoacoustic phenomenon, referred to as the masking level difference, is operated primarily at the cortical level.  相似文献

Reverse averaging of cortical potentials from the moment of the motor response followed the verbal task solving (anagram riddle) revealed some brain potentials correlations with the process of a decision making. In the case of task solving the negative frontal wave with the latency 900-400 ms from the motor response was recorded. Intracortical interaction mapping of this potential showed the regular patterns of cortical functional connections in different frequency ranges (alpha, beta). Successful solving of the task was characterized with predominant interaction foci topography in the frontal and left-temporal cortical areas in alpha band and parietal zones in beta. The absence of the task solution was characterized with the parieto-occipital interaction foci in alpha band and their frontal localization in beta.  相似文献

The influence of the performance of a computerized visio-spatial task on the state of the autonomic nervous system of PC operators was studied. Statistical characteristics of the operator's heart rhythm during the 3-hour period of work on a computer were analyzed using Baevsky's method of variational pulsometry. The operators were classified in three groups by the character of their reaction to loading. It was suggested that the visio-spatial task performance on a computer could act as a stress factor only on a certain category of people.  相似文献

Data from 354 embryos and fetuses between 20 and 200 mm crown rump length obtained by therapeutic abortion in 3 different countries were evaluated. All Danich and Hungarian and the majority of American specimens were measured immeditely after delivery in the fresh condition. In the mathematical evaluation linear regressions were calculated by the method of least squares for arbitrarily defined ranges to 20-50 mm and 50-200 mm crown rump lenghts. The material was analyzed statistically so that confidence limits could be drawn for the estimation of gestational age from crown rump length measurements. All data in the 20-50 mm range were combined, but beyond that fetal length the statistics for the Hungarian group were calculated separatley. The equation calculated to fit the data in the 20-50 mm rage is A = 46 + 0.71 L where A is gestational age in days and L is crown rump lenght in mm. The 95% confidence limits of regression are 0.57-0.83 days/mm and the correlation between gestational age and crown rump length is 0.65. Estimates of gestational age from sitting height measurements can be made + or - 15 days with 95% confidence. The equation for the combined Danish and American data in the range 50-200 mm is A = 64 + 0.41 L. The 95% confidence limits for the regression are 0.36-0.46 days mm and the correlation between gestational age and crown rump length is 0.70. Estimates of gestational age from crown rump length can be made + or - 26 days with 95% confidence. The data from the Hungarian study in the 50-200 mm sitting height range differ from those of the combined Danish and American material. The regression of days/mm (0.22) was significantly less at p. 01 level supporting the suspected bias in the Hungarian material, but the correlation between gestational age and crown rump length, 0.62, was not significantly less than that of the combined Danish and American data. Thus, if the difference in the slope was due to a bias, the bias was relatively consistent from patient to patient. Comparison of the results with those of Streeter (1920, 1951) indicates that the considerable discrepancy at the embryonic stages diminishes gradually in the fetal period and eventually becomes quite insignificant.  相似文献

Different functional roles for the hands have been demonstrated, however leg control is not as well understood. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate bilateral knee neuromuscular control to determine if the limb receiving greater attention would have more well-tuned control compared to an unattended limb. Surface electrodes were placed on seven muscles of each limb, before standing on two force platforms. Visual feedback was given of the forces and moments of the “focus limb,” but not the “unattended limb.” Static isometric forces were matched with their focus limb, requiring their unattended limb to push in the opposite direction, using a combination of forward–backward–medial–lateral shear forces while muscle activity was collected bilaterally. There was a significant main effect for limb task (p = 0.02), with the medial hamstrings being more specific (p = 0.001) while performing the unattended limb and the lateral hamstring being more well-tuned (p = 0.007) while performing the focus limb task. The focus limb’s medial and lateral gastrocnemius were principally active in the forwards direction, but only the unattended limb’s lateral gastrocnemius was active in the backwards direction. Findings suggest unique neuromuscular control strategies are used for the legs depending on limb task.  相似文献

Previous experience with left ventrolateral thalamic (VL) stimulation during visually presented language and verbal memory tasks has shown that stimulation at the time information enters memory increases the accuracy of subsequent recall. The present study investigated the effects of VL stimulation on an auditory dichotic listening task. A similar effect was identified with significantly more words presented during left VL stimulation subsequently correctly reported, compared to words presented in the absence of stimulation, or with right VL stimulation. No significant effects on the ratios of correct responses from opposite ears were observed.  相似文献

This paper considers the evolution of phenotypic traits in a community comprising the populations of predators and prey subject to Allee effect. The evolutionary model is constructed from a deterministic approximation of the stochastic process of mutation and selection. Firstly, we investigate the ecological and evolutionary conditions that allow for continuously stable strategy and evolutionary branching. We find that the strong Allee effect of prey facilitates the formation of continuously stable strategy in the case that prey population undergoes evolutionary branching if the Allee effect of prey is not strong enough. Secondly, we show that evolutionary suicide is impossible for prey population when the intraspecific competition of prey is symmetric about the origin. However, evolutionary suicide can occur deterministically on prey population if prey individuals undergo strong asymmetric competition and are subject to Allee effect. Thirdly, we show that the evolutionary model with symmetric interactions admits a stable limit cycle if the Allee effect of prey is weak. Evolutionary cycle is a likely outcome of the process, which depends on the strength of Allee effect and the mutation rates of predators and prey.  相似文献

It is well recognized that individuals of many species can benefit from the presence of conspecifics, a concept broadly referred to as the Allee effect. At the metapopulation level, there is an analogous but essentially different phenomenon called the Allee-like effect that leads to metapopulation extinction thresholds at low habitat occupancy. But so far not adequate attention has been paid to this phenomenon. In this paper, the Allee-like effect is introduced into a metapopulation model of one species and also that of a three-state two-species competitive system. Phase plane analysis is used to investigate the dynamics of these models. We demonstrate that the Allee-like effect alone could lead to multiple stable states in three-state two-species competitive systems at the metapopulation level, and the number of stable states decrease as the Allee-like effect becomes more severe. Severe Allee-like effects may make coexistence impossible and may even lead to the extinction of both species even if their initial habitat occupancies are high and suitable habitats are enough. It is especially noticeable that depending on their initial conditions one species may exclude the other one that subjects to a weaker Allee-like effect than the former, while the second species always excludes the first one when both species are assumed to be in the absence of the Allee-like effect. We also investigate the habitat destructive effect on the Allee-like system mentioned above. Research indicates that the existence of the Allee-like effect makes a metapopulation more susceptible to habitat destruction. All in all, the Allee-like effect is probably a destabilizing factor that, together with habitat destruction, would affect the continuous existence of species. These conclusions may have important implications for conservation and metacommunity organization.  相似文献

Behavioral and neurophysiological studies of numerical comparisons have shown a "distance effect," whereby smaller numerical distances between two digits are associated with longer response times and higher activity in the parietal region. In this experiment, we introduced a two-choice condition (between either the smaller/lower or the larger/higher of two digits) and examined its effect on brain activity by fMRI. We observed longer response times and greater activity with the choice of smaller numbers ("choice effect") in several brain regions including the right temporo-parietal region, (pre)cuneus, superior temporal sulcus, precentral gyrus, superior frontal gyrus, bilateral insula, and anterior cingulate cortex. These regions correspond to areas that have been suggested to play a role in attentional shift and response conflict. However, brain activity associated with the distance effect disappeared even though the behavioral distance effect remained. Despite the absence of the distance effect on brain activity, several areas changed activity in relation to response time, including regions that were reported to change activity in both a distance effect and a reaction-time-related manner. The result suggested that the level of task load may change the activity of regions that are responsible for magnitude detection.  相似文献

There are many outdoor work environments that involve the combination of repetitive, fatiguing lifting tasks and less-than-optimal footing (muddy/slippery ground surfaces). The focus of the current research was to evaluate the effects of lifting-induced fatigue of the low back extensors on lifting kinematics and ground reaction forces. Ten participants performed a repetitive lifting task over a period of 8 minutes. As they performed this task, the ground reaction forces and whole body kinematics were captured using a force platform and magnetic motion tracking system, respectively. Fatigue was verified in this experiment by documenting a decrease in the median frequency of the bilateral erector spinae muscles (pretest-posttest). Results indicate significant (p < 0.05) increases in the magnitude of the peak anterior/posterior (increased by an average of 18.3%) and peak lateral shear forces (increased by an average of 24.3%) with increasing time into the lifting bout. These results have implications for work environments such as agriculture and construction, where poor footing conditions and requirements for considerable manual materials handling may interact to create an occupational scenario with an exceptionally high risk of a slip and fall.  相似文献

It was recently shown that the cutaneous sensitivity to airpuffs is decreased by a low-frequency vibrotactile masker in the hairy skin, and by a low-frequency but especially by a high-frequency masker in the glabrous skin. In the current study, the spatial features of this masking effect were determined in four healthy human subjects, using a reaction time paradigm. The masking effect decreased monotonically with increasing interstimulus distance, and identically in longitudinal and transverse (i.e., lateral) directions in the palm or dorsal surface of the hand. The masking effect was stronger in the glabrous than in the hairy skin, especially in the fingers. In the glabrous skin, the spread of masking effect produced by a high-frequency masker was more extensive than that produced by a low-frequency masker. The mechanical spread of high-frequency vibration was less extensive than that of low-frequency vibration in the skin. In the glabrous skin, a masker applied to the tip of the finger produced a stronger masking effect on sensations in the base of the finger than when the masker was located at the base and the test stimulus was located at the tip. It is concluded that mechanical spread of vibration in the skin is of minor importance in explaining the masking effects. Different peripheral neural mechanisms underlie the airpuff-elicited sensations in the hairy and glabrous skin. The afferent inhibitory mechanisms are stronger for signals coming from the glabrous skin of the fingers than for signals coming from the hairy skin. Furthermore, the peripheral innervation density and size of the cortical representational areas may be of importance in determining the magnitude of the masking effect.  相似文献

The sequential deployment of gaze to regions of interest is an integral part of human visual function. Owing to its central importance, decades of research have focused on predicting gaze locations, but there has been relatively little formal attempt to predict the temporal aspects of gaze deployment in natural multi-tasking situations. We approach this problem by decomposing complex visual behaviour into individual task modules that require independent sources of visual information for control, in order to model human gaze deployment on different task-relevant objects. We introduce a softmax barrier model for gaze selection that uses two key elements: a priority parameter that represents task importance per module, and noise estimates that allow modules to represent uncertainty about the state of task-relevant visual information. Comparisons with human gaze data gathered in a virtual driving environment show that the model closely approximates human performance.  相似文献

In this paper the visual masking effect is interpreted on the basis of the transient characteristic in two dimensional neuronal networks. The study investigates the suitability of the effect for use as a measurement method. In contrast to animal social learning (e.g. dogs learning from observing another dog), humans typically teach by attracting the attention of the learner. Also during the training of dogs, humans tend to attract their attention in a similar way. Here, we investigated dogs’ ability to learn both from a dog and a human demonstrator in a manipulative task, where the models demonstrated which part of a box to manipulate in order to get a food reward. We varied the communicative context both during the dog and during the human demonstration comparably: a second experimenter directed the attention of the subjects to the model (dog/human ostensive demonstration) or remained silent (dog/human non-ostensive demonstration). Moreover, we investigated whether the training level of the dogs (well-trained vs. untrained) affected how the dogs performed in the manipulative tasks after the different demonstrations.We found that better trained dogs showed significantly better problem solving abilities. They paid more attention to the human demonstration than to the dog model, whereas such a difference in attentiveness of the less trained dogs was not found. Despite slight differences in paying attention to the different demonstrators, the presence of human or the dog demonstrators exerted equally effectiveness on the test performance of the dogs. However, the effectiveness of the demonstrations was significantly reduced if ostensive cues were given during the demonstrations by a second experimenter. Analysis of attentiveness and activity of the observer dogs during the demonstrations indicates that the reason for this negative effect was a combination of distracted attention paid to the demonstration and a higher level of excitement in the ostensive than in the non-ostensive demonstrations.This study suggests that third party communication during demonstration attracts dogs’ attention to the communicator instead of paying close attention to the model. We suggest that precise timing and synchronization of attention-calling and demonstration is necessary to avoid this distracting effect.  相似文献
