Summary To examine if differences in egg predation rates could explain differences in bird community composition, egg predation was studied in two years on small islands in a South Swedish lake and on the nearby mainland using both natural and artificial nests. In plots with similar vegetation, the combined density of ground- and tree-nesting bird species did not differ between the islands and the mainland. Egg predation rates were similar on islands and the mainland for natural Turdus nests in two years, and for artificial Turdus and Phylloscopus nests. Unmarked and unvisited experimental nests suffered similar rate of egg predation as marked and visited nests. Egg predation rates were higher on natural nests when artificial nests were also put out, increasing the total nest density. Initial egg predation rates in artificial nests were also higher than later when nest density had decreased by 75%.The egg predators involved differed for artificial Phylloscopus nests between the islands and the mainland. Small mammals were apparently responsible for 29% of the predation on the mainland, but none on the islands. Artificial Turdus nests near crow nests suffered from a higher egg predation rate than nests further away from crow nests. Daily survival rates of Turdus nests increased from the laying to the incubation and further to the fledging state.Egg predation can not explain differences in bird community composition between islands and mainland in the present case. 相似文献

We investigated avian nest distribution and success in understoryforest, sun coffee plantations, and pasture in southern Costa Rica. Nestsearching occurred in plantations and forest in 1999 and 2000 and in pastures in2000. Nests were monitored until they failed or fledged young. Antbirds(Thamnophilidae) were the most common understory forest nesters and were notfound nesting in the plantations or pastures. Common nesting species in theplantations included Turdidae, Tyrannidae, Cardinalidae, and Thraupidae, many ofwhich are typical of forest edge/canopy or open, scrubby habitats. Two speciesassociated with forest interior, Henicorhina leucostictaand Buarremon brunneinucha, were found nesting in theplantations. Pastures supported similar types of nesting species as theplantations, with the exception of the forest-interior species. Daily mortalityrates (DMRs) for above-ground cup-nesting species in plantations and pastureswere similar to those for species nesting in forest at our site and a site inPanama. The results indicate that conversion from forest to pastures and suncoffee plantations diminishes nesting habitat for forest-interior species, whilenumerous forest edge/canopy species and open-country species are able to nest inthese agricultural land-cover types. As a group, species nesting in theplantations and pastures do not have unusually high nest mortality rates, although species-specific studies are lacking. Nesting species distributionsacross habitat types and DMRs at our study site may be influenced by the largeamount of forest in the landscape. 相似文献

Internal and external factors like forest management practices and atmospheric deposition may have large influences on the nutrient supply of forest soils. Examples are given for the effects of tree species, harvesting, site history, changes of species and specific soil conditions, nitrogen deposition, and forest growth dynamics. It is concluded from these examples that all of these factors may contribute to soil acidification in forest ecosystems under humid temperate climatic conditions. 相似文献

Nutrient supply commonly limits aboveground plant productivity in forests, but the effects of an altered nutrient supply on gross primary production (GPP) and patterns of carbon (C) allocation remain poorly characterized. Increased nutrient supply may lead to a higher aboveground net primary production (ANPP), but a lower total belowground carbon allocation (TBCA), with little change in either aboveground plant respiration (APR) or GPP. Alternatively, increases in nutrient supply may increase GPP, with the quantity of GPP allocated aboveground increasing more steeply than the quantity of GPP allocated belowground. To examine the effects of an elevated nutrient supply on the C allocation patterns in forests, we determined whole‐ecosystem C budgets in unfertilized plots of Eucalyptus saligna and in adjacent plots receiving regular additions of 65 kg N ha?1, 31 kg P ha?1, 46 kg K ha?1, and macro‐ and micronutrients. We measured the absolute flux of C allocated to the components of GPP (ANPP, TBCA and APR), as well as the fraction of GPP allocated to these components. Fertilization dramatically increased GPP. Averaged over 3 years, GPP in the fertilized plots was 34% higher than that in the unfertilized controls (3.95 vs. 2.95 kg C m?2 yr?1). Fertilization‐related increases in GPP were allocated entirely aboveground – ANPP was 85% higher and APR was 57% higher in the fertilized than in the control plots, while TBCA did not differ significantly between treatments. Carbon use efficiency (NPP/GPP) was slightly higher in the fertilized (0.53) compared with the control plots (0.51). Overall, fertilization increased ANPP and APR, and these increases were related to a greater GPP and an increase in the fraction of GPP allocated aboveground. 相似文献

Soil inorganic nitrogen supply and fine root mass in the top layers of mineral soil (0–5 and 5–10cm) were investigated at upper and lower sites of a cool temperate forest where Fagus crenata and Quercus crispula dominate. At both sites, soil inorganic nitrogen supply was greatest in the 0–5cm layer. The predominant forms of soil inorganic nitrogen supply were NH4+-N at the upper site and NO3–-N at the lower site. Fine roots were concentrated in the 0–5cm layer at the upper site, but not at the lower site. The form of supplied soil inorganic nitrogen supply can be important in determining the vertical distribution of fine roots. 相似文献

Aim To create a map of bird species richness (BSR) in East Asia and to examine the effect of area, isolation, primary productivity, topographic heterogeneity, and human population density on BSR. Location East Asia (from 70° E to 180° E longitude), including the eastern half of the Palaearctic Region, the entire Oriental Region, and the entire Wallacea Subregion. Methods The breeding ranges of 2406 terrestrial bird species were mapped and overlaid to create a species richness map. The BSR map was transformed into a 100 × 100 km quadrat system, and BSR was analysed in relation to land area, average normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), elevation range, and average population density. Results In general, BSR declined from the Tropics to the Arctic. In mainland East Asia, however, BSR was highest around the Tropic of Cancer, and fluctuated between 30° and 50° N. Islands had lower BSR than adjacent mainland areas. The NDVI was strongly positively correlated with BSR in mainland areas and on islands. For mainland areas, NDVI explained 65% of the BSR variation, and topographic heterogeneity explained an additional 6% in ordinary least‐squares regression. On islands, NDVI explained 66% of BSR variation, island area explained 13%, and distance to mainland accounted for 1%. Main conclusions In East Asia, we suggest that primary productivity is the key factor underpinning patterns of BSR. Primary productivity sets the upper limits of the capacity of habitats to support bird species. In isolated areas such as islands and peninsulas, however, BSR might not reach the richness limits set by primary productivity because the degree of isolation and area size also can affect species richness. Other factors, such as spatial heterogeneity, biotic interactions, and perturbations, may also affect species richness. However, their effects are secondary and are not as strong as primary productivity, isolation, and area size. 相似文献

Fat deposits of463 Red fox vixens shot during autumn-winter were monitored throughout a four-year cycle of vole abundance (1975-79) in south-central Sweden. The growth ofjuveniles during the same period was indexed by lower jaw length during winter. The reproduction of foxes in the study area was correlated with vole abundance. Fat deposits built up during autumn and were depleted during winter. Subadults had consistently smaller fat deposits than adults. There was no positive correlation between vole abundance and mean fat deposits in autumn or degree of depletion during winter. The mean amount of fat deposited during autumn was correlated with the frequency ofoccurrence offruit and berries in fox stomachs. The degree of depletion of fat deposits during winter was correlated with mean snow depth. It is hypothesized that the availability of fruit and berries (a major source of carbohydrates in the diet of foxes) determines the amount of fat reserves built up during autumn, whereas the energy requirement of moving in deep snow determines the degree of depletion during winter. Juvenile growth was correlated with vole abundance but growth later in life seemed to compensate for this variation. 相似文献

Three species of vulture (African White-backed, White-headed and Lappet-faced) breed in Swaziland, all of which are threatened within the country. Vulture nests were surveyed using a fix-winged aircraft in low-lying savannas of Swaziland. Nesting was observed in three land use categories: (1) unprotected government cattle ranches, (2) protected cattle ranches, and (3) conservation areas. A total of 248 nests was recorded, of which 240 belonged to the African White-backed Vulture. Nesting densities were highest in conservation areas, an order of magnitude lower on protected cattle ranches and negligible on government ranches. Nests of White-headed Vultures and Lappet-faced Vultures were exclusively located in conservation areas. Nesting densities of African White-backed Vultures in some conservation areas exceeded 260 nests/100 km2, which are the highest known densities of this species anywhere in Africa. Nests were almost exclusively located in riparian vegetation, but at Hlane National Park a large proportion of nests were placed in open woodland, possibly as a result of an influx of vultures from adjoining agricultural lands that have only been transformed in recent decades. Where elephants were present in conservation areas, vultures did not nest within their enclosures. The location and density of vulture nests may possibly be used as an indicator of pressure on biological resources in low-lying savannas of Swaziland. 相似文献

In the temperate zone, permanent-resident birds and mammalsthat do not hibernate must survive harsh winter conditions oflow ambient temperature, long nights, and reduced food levels. To understand the energy management strategy of food-hoardingbirds, it has been hypothesized that such birds respond to increasedstarvation risk by increasing the number of their hoards ratherthan by increasing their fat reserves and that they cache earlyin the day and retrieve their caches later to achieve fat reservesnecessary to survive the night We tested these hypotheses byobserving the responses in captivity of a caching bird, thetufted titmouse (Parus bicolor), to the combined influencesof reduced predictability of food and naturally occurring ambienttemperature and photoperiod. When the food supply was unpredictable, birds significantly increased both internal fat reserves atdusk and external food caches. Initially leaner birds tendedto increase their fat reserves to a greater extent and initiallyfatter birds tended to cache more food and to fly significantlyless. Half the birds also increased their dawn and mean dailybody mass. All birds tended to forage, gain body mass, and cachefood at significantly lower rates in the morning and at significantlyhigher rates in the evening. Cache retrieval showed the oppositetrend, with birds retrieving most of their caches in the morning. Our results do not support the hypothesis that caching birdsincrease caching rate but not body mass under an unpredictablefood regime. Instead fat reserves and food caches are both importantcomplementary sources of energy in food-hoarding birds. Energymanagement by wintering birds occurs in response to a numberof biotic and abiotic factors acting simultaneously; thus futuremodels must incorporate independent variables in addition tothe state of the food supply and time of day 相似文献

Diel activity and home range size in relation to food supply in a drift-feeding stream fish 总被引:3,自引:1,他引:3
Individuals within a species often compete for resources inboth space and time. In dominance hierarchies individuals withthe greatest competitive ability will occupy prime locationsduring optimal periods. We compared spatial and temporal useof habitat, aggression, and feeding success among giant kokopu(Galaxias argenteus) in dominance hierarchies under normal andreduced food supply. Under normal food supply conditions dominantfish were predominantly nocturnal and maintained large homeranges at night. Conversely, subdominant fish were diurnal andoccupied large home ranges by day but were generally not observedat night. When the food supply was limited, the utilizationof pools was determined by social rank. Dominant fish from eachpool increased diurnal activity, home range size, aggressiveness, and the capture of food items offered by day while simultaneouslyreducing the spatial and temporal activity and habitat use ofsubdominant fish. These results indicate that behavioral changesin large dominant fish influence and reduce the amount of resourcesavailable to subdominant fish.

It has been suggested that bottom–up and top–down forces interactively control food web dynamics. While top–down effects would increase with resource availability to plants, bottom–up effects would be stronger under low predator abundance. These predictions, however, have rarely been tested at contrasting sites while keeping the dominant plant species unchanged. Furthermore, few studies have factorially manipulated both types of forces in forest communities. For two years, we evaluated the effects of fertiliser (NPK) addition and bird exclusion on tree growth, leaf traits, insect abundance, and folivory rates in a dry/warm and a wet/cold Nothofagus pumilio forest in Patagonia, Argentina. Overall, we found no interaction between nutrient supply and bird predation, although the strength of bottom–up and top–down forces differed markedly between forest sites. Treatment effects were generally weak in the wet forest, where tree growth rates and insect herbivory were low relative to the dry forest. In the dry forest, fertilisation increased sapling growth, insect abundance and folivory, whereas bird exclusion increased leaf damage and reduced tree growth. In the wet forest, fertilisation enhanced leaf nutrient contents and folivore abundance but not sapling growth, while bird exclusion had little impact on insects or trees. These results imply that factors other than nutrients and birds were important in controlling tree growth and folivore activity in the wet forest. While treatment effect sizes varied widely among feeding guilds, in general, nutrient effects on folivores were stronger than predator effects. We conclude that, within the time‐frame of this study, tree growth and herbivory were additively affected by soil nutrients and predator presence, as bird exclusion effects did not change with elevated folivore activity on fertilised trees. We also show that both top–down and bottom–up cascades were weaker in a forest site characterised by slow‐growing juvenile trees subjected to low folivore pressure. 相似文献

The numbers of honeyeaters present at particular sites in the Jarrah forest varied significantly from month to month, with peak abundance occurring between May and September. Numbers also varied from site to site, depending upon the major plant species present. Honeyeater abundance was not limited by arthropod availability, but in many instances was closely correlated with the availability of nectar, particularly that produced by Dryandra sessilis. Large honeyeaters, such as Anthochaera chrysoptera and Phylidonyris novaehollandiae, were generally most abundant at times and sites of greatest nectar production. Small honeyeaters, such as Acanthorhynchus superciliosis, were never abundant but were present for most of the year. The production of nectar between October and December was such that more honeyeaters could have been supported than were actually present. Low numbers at these times can be explained in terms of reduced foraging efficiency that would have resulted from more widely dispersed flowers, and the possible availability of more rewarding nectar resources at other sites. 相似文献

Invasive species pose significant threats to biodiversity, especially on islands. They cause extinctions and population declines, yet little is known about their consequences on the emergent, metacommunity-level patterns of native species in island assemblages. We investigated differences in species–area relationships, nestedness, and occupancy of 9 species of native land birds between island assemblages with and without invasive Norway rats (Rattus norvegicus) in the Falkland Archipelago. We found that species–area curves, nestedness, and individual species’ occurrences differed between island assemblages with and without rats. Rat-free islands had, on average, 2.1 more land bird species than rat-infested islands of similar size. Passerine bird communities on islands with and without rats were significantly nested, but nestedness was significantly higher on rat-free islands than on rat-infested islands. The presence of rats was associated with differences in the incidence of many, but not all bird species. On rat free islands the occurrence of all species increased with island area. The occurrence of most, albeit not all, bird species was lower on islands with than on islands without rats. Two species of conservation concern, Troglodytes aedon cobbi and Cinclodes antarcticus, were abundant on rat-free islands, but absent or found at very low frequencies on islands with rats. The occurrence of three species was not associated with the presence of rats. The patterns presented here can be used to evaluate the consequences of ongoing rat eradications for passerine diversity, distribution, and abundance. 相似文献

Between 1986 and 1988 data on the nesting densities, productivity, and survival of breeding Whimbrel Numenius phaeopus were collected from 5 study sites in the Northern Isles of Shetland. Nesting densities on sites varied between 11 and 21 pairs per 100 ha. Few studies elsewhere have recorded such high densities of nesting Whimbrel as those on certain sites used in the present study. Each breeding pair produced an average of between 0.75 and 0.91 fledglings per year. Productivity varied considerably between different study sites however, primarily because of differences in the survival rate of chicks between hatching and fledging (ranging from 3% to 55% in one year). The annual survival rate of breeding adults was at least 89%. Considering adult survival in relation to overall productivity, it appears likely that the production of fledglings from study sites is in excess of that required to balance adult mortality. This result is consistent with the current increase of the Whimbrel population in Shetland. 相似文献

Capsule Wood Warblers did not match their reproduction to the caterpillar peak Aims To study the timing of Wood Warblers’ breeding and nestling diet in relation to caterpillar abundance under primeval conditions in the Bia?owie?a National Park, Poland. Methods Observations of food brought by parents. Inter‐year and seasonal changes in availability of folivorous caterpillars were assessed by direct counts and caterpillar frass collection. Results Maximum food requirements occurred two weeks after the peak of caterpillar abundance. The mismatch had no effect on nestlings’ development. Diet varied little across years and habitats, but varied strongly within a season. Following the decline of ‘green’ caterpillars, their proportion in the Wood Warbler diet strongly declined. Caterpillars were replaced by winged insects. Small nestlings received more spiders than older ones. Conclusion Timing of Wood Warbler breeding in Bia?owie?a National Park was constrained by the females’ arrival time. Birds did not match their reproduction to the caterpillar peak. ‘Green’ caterpillars were the preferred food for nestlings; birds responded to the caterpillar decrease by feeding smaller proportions of them and switching to alternative prey, namely winged insects. 相似文献
