Data on growth of 276 young Barn Owls were analysed with respect to the effects of year and month of hatching, hatch order and brood order. Growth characteristics considered were weight; lengths of culmen, tarsus, central tail feathers and quill of third outermost primary; standard wing length; and wing span. For weight the growth constant K was 0151 and time t 10- t 90 was 32-2 days. Least-squares analyses showed that gain in weight and culmen and tarsus length were affected by month of hatching with young hatched in the middle part of the breeding season showing the most rapid growth. Hatch order affected gain in weight. Differences in growth rates of all these characters were not, however, reflected in differences in weight or length at fledging except for the effects of brood on weight with second broods fledging at significantly lighter weights than first ones. Predictive equations for character against age are provided for all linear measurements. All characters examined attained apparent asymptotes before fledging except tail and standard wing length.

The range of morphometric variation among two inshore seabirds, the Kerguelen cormorant Phalacrocorax atriceps verrucosus and the gentoo penguin Pygoscelis papua was investigated on the Kerguelen and Crozet archipelagos. Four measurements (weight, culmen, flipper and body length for gentoos; weight, culmen, wing and tarsus length for cormorants) were compared in the same seven localities on Kerguelen. In addition, culmen and wing length were compared in four localities on Crozet for gentoo penguins. The two species exhibited similar trends in variation within Kerguelen although the range of variation was greater in cormorants. Compared to the largest cormorants and gentoo of Kerguelen, the smallest stocks were 60 and 36% of the weights, respectively. There is little evidence elsewhere of similar broad morphometric variability in seabirds on a microgeographical scale. The variation observed did not follow a regular cline and appeared to be less related to physical factors (sea temperatures) than to the local biological factors during the breeding season.

Measurements of five morphological components (mass, skull length, culmen, flattened wing and tarsus) and blood samples were taken from 154 fledged wild Lesser Flamingos Phoenicopterus minor captured during 2001 and 2002 at Lake Bogoria, Kenya (0°11'–20'N, 036°06'E). The sample included adults (>3 years old), immature birds (2–3 years old) and first-year juvenile birds of both sexes. The sex of each bird was determined by PCR amplification of the CHD-Z and CHD-W genes, using DNA extracted from blood samples. Within each gender, there were significant differences in mass and tarsus length amongst the three age groups, indicating that the skeletal size and mass of Lesser Flamingos continue to increase between fledging and attainment of adult plumage at three to four years of age. The different morphological components increased in size at different rates, although the same components appeared to increase at similar rates in both males and females. Skull and culmen lengths had reached adult size in juvenile birds, while juvenile wing length, tarsus length and mass were approximately 95%, 85% and 75% of adult size, respectively. The adaptive significance of these findings is discussed.

Data on growth of nestling Hamerkops Scopus umbretto were analysed with respect to year and season of hatching and to hatch sequence. Quantitative growth characters included weight, culmen, tarsus, tail, third outermost primary quill, standard wing-length and wing span. The growth constant K of weight was 0.179 and time t10-t90 was 21.8 days. Least-squares analyses showed differences in weight gain, culmenlength and tarsus-length related to year and month but not to sequence of hatching. Predictive equations for character against age are provided for all linear measurements. Characters which attained apparent asymptotes before fledging were weight and culmen and tarsus-length whilst other characters varied between 80 and 90% of reported adult size. Qualitative indications of growth discussed are crest development, colouration and the disappearance of the egg-tooth. The rainy and post-rains seasons appear to offer the Hamerkop the best chances of successful breeding and maximum growth rates.

A significant decrease in the body size of Audouin's Gulls Larus audouinii breeding at the Chafarinas Islands is reported. The decrease in linear measurements in the current breeding population ranged from 2.5% to 5.6% in males and from 0.61% to 4.4% in females. This was detected when assessing the reliability of a sex-discriminating function derived for the same colony 13 years earlier. When applied to the current population, this function failed to predict the sex of a large proportion of males (44%). The relative decrease in mean size was significantly greater in males than in females for culmen, nalospi and tarsus lengths, while for bill depth at culmen, wing length and body mass the relative decrease was similar in both sexes. Since the extent of differences depended on sex, these differences cannot be attributed to a systematic between-observer bias. Mean body size reduction might be either the result of a greater proportion of small breeding birds in the current population, because of increased availability of nesting sites (competition relaxation hypothesis), or an outcome of environmental factors affecting growth parameters (environmental constraint hypothesis). According to the first hypothesis, the changes observed would be associated with higher variability values. Conversely, if the second is true, the degree of variability should be similar. Since there are no significant differences in the degree of variability shown in the two data sets, our results support the second hypothesis. The environmental constraint acting via growth parameters is probably related to the increase in the number of Audouin's Gull breeding pairs while food availability was depleted. Our data suggest that changes in the duration of the growth period, rather than in the growth rates themselves, are involved in the body size differences found.

The sex of 59 adult Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus L.) was determined by laparoscopic exam of the gonads. Concomitant body weight (kg) and linear measurements (mm) of the culmen (bill), tarsus, middle toe, and wing were taken and compared for males vs. females. Although an overlap between sexes existed in all measurements, males on average were larger than females. Student's t-test indicated significant sexual differences for all five measurements. Thus, weights and linear measurements—especially tarsus, middle toe, and wing length—appear to be a useful parameter in determining an individual's sex in lieu of laparoscopic, feather pulp, blood chromosome, or fecal steroid analysis.

Gender was determined by laparoscopic visualization of the gonads for 38 adult American flamingos (Phoenicopterus ruber ruber L.) and 36 adult Chilean flamingos (P. chilensis L.). Concomitant body weight (kg) and linear measurements (mm) of the culmen (bill), tarsus (tarsometatarsus), middle toe, and wing were taken. Statistical comparisons of body weight and linear measurements for male vs. female were made for each species. Also, the same-sex statistical comparisons were made between these two species, and between each of these two species and with data for greater flamingos (P. r. roseas L.) from a previous publication. As previously published for greater flamingos, an overlap between sexes existed in all measurements with males on average larger than females for both American and Chilean flamingos. However, Students' t-test indicated a significant sexual difference for all measurements between males and females of each species except for culmen length in Chilean flamingos. Students' t-test also indicated a significant difference when species were compared (Chilean vs. greater, and American vs. Chilean) and subspecies (American vs. greater) were compared for most of the 5 measurements. Thus, despite limitations imposed by between-sex overlap, weights and linear measurements, especially tarsus, middle toe, and wing length, appear to be useful in determining an individual's gender when species or subspecies identification is considered.

Phenotypic sexual dimorphism seems to be rare in the Ramphastidae family, except in Pteroglossus viridis and in the genus Selenidera. Many breeders of wild birds believe that specimens of Ramphastos toco can be sexed using bill characteristics. In this study, various discriminant phenotypic variables were analyzed in birds which were sexed cytogenetically. Fifty-one specimens of R. toco and 20 R. dicolorus were studied. The statistically significant parameters which served to distinguish the sex in these species were the length of the culmen and tomium, length of the lower corneous beak and the cloaca. Using these parameters, captive bird breeders can determine sex of R. toco specimens by phenotypic analysis and form breeding couples more quickly.

Summary

Hockey, P. A. R. 1981. Morphometries and sexing of the African Black Oystercatcher. Ostrich 52: 244–247.

109 African Black Oystercatchers Haematopus moquini were caught, measured and sexed by cloacal examination during the 1979/1980 breeding season. Six standard taxonomic variables were measured. Females were larger than males in all dimensions considered. The most dimorphic characters were mass and exposed culmen length. The data were subjected to stepwise discriminant analysis and a linear function was derived which allowed birds of unknown sex to be sexed. The function is D = ?0,391x1 ?0,016 x2 +0,218 x3 +0,714 x4 +15,946 where x1 = exposed culmen length (mm), x2 = body mass (g), x3 = length of tarsometatarsus (mm) and x4 = culmen depth at the gonys. Values of D from the above equation less than zero indicate a female while those greater than zero indicate a male. The greater the divergence of D from zero, the higher the probability of correctly sexing an unknown individual: once D> ± 1,2, p>0,99.

Aspects of the breeding biology of the whitc-chinned petrel Procellaria aequinoctialis were studied at South Georgia. Laying, hatching and fledging dates, together with egg and adult measurements, rate of weight loss of eggs and incubating adults and data on the duration of incubation shifts were recorded. Chick growth in weight, tarsus length, culmen length and wing length from hatching to fledging was followed in detail and breeding success and causes of mortality documented. Comparisons are made with other populations of the species, other members of the genus Procellaria and other Procellariiformes. Despite being the largest burrow-nesting petrel in the world, P. aequinoctialis conforms well to the overall relationships between body weight and breeding parameters for Procellariiformes in general.

We investigated patterns of variation of feather and bill ornaments of Crested Auklets Aethia cristatella , a monogamous seabird, based on 963 individuals measured in the years 1990 to 1998. Three prominent ornaments were displayed: a forehead crest, composed of 11–31 curved feathers averaging about 40 mm in length, bilaterally symmetrical white auricular plumes on the sides of the head behind the eyes, averaging about 30 mm in length, and brightly coloured semi-circular rictal plates at the corners of the bill. As in other putative sexually selected traits, auklet ornaments were more variable across individuals than non-ornamental traits. Crest length and auricular plume length were positively correlated within individuals but not across years. Among the traits measured there was evidence for slight sexual dimorphism for the auricular plume and rictal plate ornaments and for culmen length and tarsus (males were slightly larger than females) but not for the crest ornament. Breeding adult females and males had greater crest and plume ornament expression than non-breeding adults. Paradoxically, females' crests and rictal plates were more variable than males' crests and rictal plates. Based on independent samples, the expression of feather ornaments and rictal plate varied among years between 1990 and 1998. Crested Auklet ornaments did not vary in concert with the ornaments of Whiskered Aethia pygmaea and Least Auklets Aethia pusilla during this period. Crested Auklet subadults had smaller ornaments than adults. Based on adults remeasured after an interval of one to seven years, the size of individuals' feather ornaments increased with age. We found no relationship between auricular plume length and asymmetry. Male auricular plumes and female crests were weakly correlated with body condition.

Recent studies suggest that parental resource allocation may be the most important factor explaining differences in reproductive output among parents. That said at least two different hypotheses of balance between parental foraging effort and resource allocation have been proposed. First, parents with high foraging effort have high reproductive success. Second, parents with higher allocation of resources to offspring have high reproductive success. We tested the second hypothesis using chinstrap penguins (Pygoscelis antarctica) as a model. We evaluated nutritional condition of the parents using blood urea, uric acid, creatine kinase, and cholesterol levels. We evaluated reproductive success according to total mass of the brood and asymmetries inside the brood. We measured the degree of asymmetry using weight and culmen length. Generalized linear models were used to examine relationships between adult plasma urea levels with year, nest position, and degree of asymmetry in chicks. Our results demonstrate that lighter broods were more asymmetric and associated with lower values of adult plasma urea, uric acid, and creatine kinase. We interpret these findings as evidence that the birds allocate fewer resources to their chicks than adults with more symmetric broods are.

We describe the development of a method to predict percent body fat of killed birds from the percent fat in the most distal wing tissue, which is often left uneaten by aerial predators. When combined with a measure of body structural size, such as tarsus, culmen or keel length, percent wing fat can be used to predict fresh body mass at the time of death. These techniques may prove useful in field studies of mass-dependent predation risk.

Pregnant WKA/Hok rats were exposed to 100 R or 200 R X-irradiation on one of gestation days 16 through 21. Offspring were killed at 60 days of age and the cerebellum was examined. The cerebellum of animals exposed to 200 R was slightly reduced in weight but not in width. The observed reduction in the dorsoventral length of the cerebellum was more evident when the X-irradiation was early in gestation. The anteroposterior length of the hemispheres increased following exposure to X-ray on days 16 through 19, and that of the vermis and paravermis decreased following treatment on days 17 through 21. Therefore, the anterior portions of hemispheres were situated anterior to the culmen in every 200 R group. Somewhat anteroposteriorly and horizontally directed lobules, as opposed to the normal transverse arrangement, were seen in the cerebellum of rats treated on day 16 or 17. Lobule contortion and fragmentation and an increased number of sublobules were striking in cases treated later. Histologically, ectopic Purkinje cells in the granule cell layer and white matter appeared following X-irradiation on day 20 or 21, but they were not found following earlier treatment. In the cerebellum of animals exposed to 100 R the reduction in size was mild and the folial abnormalities were rare, but the number of sublobules decreased.

For most seabirds, reproductive performance improves with age; in albatrosses this is thought not to be so (experience being acquired before starting breeding) but only one study (of chick growth in a single season at one site) has specifically addressed this. We compared the provisioning performance and growth rates of chicks of Wandering Albatrosses Diomedea exulans breeding for the first (IN), second and third (LE) and fourth or more times (EE) on Bird Island, South Georgia in the austral winters of 1996 and 1997. Eggs from EE adults were significantly heavier than the other two categories and these chicks had a greater mass and longer wings up to 160 days of age and longer culmen and tarsus up to 115 days old. However chicks from all categories fledged at the same average mass, size and age. No significant differences between categories in feeding frequency or meal size were detected but experienced adults made shorter long foraging trips and spent more time at the nest than less experienced birds. Adults that remained at the nest gave chicks smaller meals than those that left immediately after feeding the chick. Although provision of smaller but more frequent meals by experienced adults promotes more rapid chick growth, the resulting differences do not persist into the late chick-rearing period. Our results were very similar to those from Iles Crozet in the Indian Ocean, supporting the hypothesis that when Wandering Albatrosses start to breed they are fully competent foragers but that it takes a while, during early chick-rearing, for birds breeding for the first time to adapt to the additional demands of provisioning a chick.

1. The Purkinje (P)-cells of the cerebellar vermis, which exert a prominent influence on posture as well as on the gain of vestibulospinal (VS) reflexes, are under the control not only of the classic mossy fibers and climbing fibers which liberate excitatory amino acids as neurotransmitter, but also of cholinergic afferents. The role of these afferents was investigated in precollicular decerebrate cats by using the method of local microinjection of cholinergic agents into appropriate areas of the cerebellar cortex. 2. Unilateral injection into the vermal cortex of the culmen of the non-selective cholinergic agonist carbachol (0.25 microliters at 0.5 micrograms/microliters saline) produced a postural asymmetry, characterized by a slight decrease of the extensor tonus in the ipsilateral forelimb and an increased tonus in the contralateral forelimb. Moreover, the gain of the EMG responses of the ipsilateral and the contralateral triceps brachii to animal tilt increased significantly, while no significant changes in the phase angle of the responses were observed. These effects started 5-10 min after the injection and persisted for at least 2 hours before disappearing. Similar but smaller effects were obtained after injection of eserine, an inhibitor of acetylcholinesterase. Thus, the effects could be produced by increasing the naturally present amount of acetylcholine (ACh). 3. The changes in posture and gain of the VS reflexes described above utilized in part at least muscarinic receptors, since effects similar to those induced by carbachol injection were also obtained after unilateral microinjection into the vermal cortex of the culmen of the muscarinic agonist bethanechol (0.25 microliters at 0.1 micrograms/microliters). On the other hand opposite effects, characterized by an increased postural activity in the ipsilateral forelimb associated with a decreased activity in the contralateral forelimb, as well as by a reduced gain of the EMG responses of the triceps brachii of both sides to animal tilt were observed in other experiments after local microinjection of the muscarinic antagonist scopolamine (0.25 microliter at 4-8 micrograms/microliters saline). Evidence for muscarinic supersensitivity was obtained following repetitive injections of scopolamine into the cerebellar vermis. 4. The area which upon injection of the cholinergic agents modified the postural activity as well as the gain of the VS reflexes was located within the third and/or the fourth folium rostral to the fissura prima (culmen), at the laterality of 1.4-1.8 mm with respect to the midline.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

Duffy, D. C. 1987. Ecological implications of intercolony size-Variation in Jackass Penguins. Ostrich 58: 54–57.

The culmen length of courting adult male Jackass Penguins Spheniscus demersus varied between colonies, with the largest culmens in southern Namibia and east of Cape Point, South Africa. Taxonomic distance, a single measure combining several morphological characters, was significantly and positively correlated with geographic distance between colonies.

Population changes between 1956 and 1978 were not significantly correlated with male mandible or flipper length, suggesting that adult size cannot be used as an index of population changes at individual colonies. Possible dispersal may complicate attempts to use changes at individual colonies as indices of changes in fish stocks of surrounding waters.
