Using three mating-treatment groups–pairing with a male for life, pairing with a male from adult emergence to first oviposition, and no pairing (virgin)–of Dysdercus cardinalis females in a laboratory study, the following results were obtained. Most of the virgin females did not lay eggs; those that did oviposited for the first time at a considerably older age than females in the other two groups. In a lifetime, females pairing with a male for life and those pairing with a male up to first oviposition produced essentially the same number of eggs, and this was more than 3.5 times the number of eggs laid by a virgin female. Virgin females produced an average of 1.3 clutches in a lifetime, compared with about 4.5 clutches produced by females in the other two groups. Reproductive span was significantly shorter, and fecundity per day of reproductive span significantly greater, for females pairing with males for life than for those pairing with a male up to first oviposition. Age at death was significantly different amongst females in different mating-treatment groups. Virgin females had the longest life, followed by females pairing with a male up to first oviposition and females pairing with a male for life, in that order. There was a positive correlation between lifetime gross reproduction and age at death for females pairing with a male for life. There was no relationship between these two characters for females pairing with a male up to first oviposition. Both females pairing with a male for life and those pairing with a male to first oviposition exhibited a significant inverse relationship between fecundity per day and age at death. The results obtained indicate that (1) mating is a prerequisite for normal gonadal activity in Dysdercus cardinalis , and (2) repetitive mating increases the rate of reproduction. This would reduce the mean age of parenthood which is inversely related to the intrinsic rate of increase. 相似文献

The absence of phytosterol dealkylation in the cotton stainer bug, Dysdercus fasciatus, has been established and the major ecdysteroid in the fifth-stage larvae identified. The demonstration that the free and esterified sterols in D fasciatus consisted of 95–96% sitosterol and 4–5% campesterol, a similar composition to the cottonseed diet, together with the lack of conversion of [14C]sitosterol into cholesterol, establishes that phytosterol dealkylation does not occur in this insect species. The ecdysteroid titer determined by radioimmunoassay in the fifth instar of D fasciatus shows a distinct peak at day 6, the instar lasting for 7 days. Makisterone A was purified by HPLC from insects at a time of high ecdysteroid titer and identified as a major component by both fast atom bombardment and electron impact mass spectrometry. Gas-liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (selected ion monitoring) confirmed the occurrence of makisterone A and revealed the presence of two unidentified compounds. One of these occurs in a similar amount to makisterone A and may be 26-hydroxymakisterone A, whereas only a minute amount of the other compound, which may be 20-deoxymakisterone A, was present; further identification of the latter compounds is necessary. C27 ecdysteroids (eg, ecdysone and 20-hydroxyecdysone) and C29 ecdysteroids (eg, podecdysone A) were undetectable. The specificity of the enzymes of ecdysteroid biosynthesis is discussed. 相似文献

Investigations were carried out to determine the role of juvenile hormone (JH) and 20-hydroxy ecdysone in the synthesis and uptake of vitellogenins, which were earlier identified, purified and characterised, in Dysdercus koenigii. The concentration(s) of vitellogenin(s) in fat body, haemolymph and that of vitellin(s) in ovary were significantly lower after chemical allatectomy at eclosion. In addition, at 70 h after emergence, chemical allatectomy reduced ovarian vitellin concentration, but vitellogenin levels remained normal in the fat body and haemolymph. The haemolymph vitellogenins were not incorporated into oocytes in such insects. Administration of JH-III at 20 h after allatectomy restored vitellogenin levels in the fat body and haemolymph, but the ovary failed to incorporate the available vitellogenins from haemolymph in such insects. However, when JH-III was administered twice, one at 20 h and then at 70 h after allatectomy, vitellogenin concentrations in fat body and haemolymph and also vitellin concentrations in ovary approached control levels. It is suggested that JH has two separate roles, one in vitellogenin synthesis and the other in uptake. 20-hydroxy ecdysone had no apparent role in either vitellogenin synthesis or uptake in D. koenigii. 相似文献

The difference between the cytological appearance of the midgut epithelium in starved specimens of Dysdercus fasciatus Sign. and fully fed specimens of this insect is described. Cytological changes, apparently identical to those which in the past have been described as evidence of enzyme secretion, are shown to be a response to starvation. The production of cytoplasmic extrusions in the epithelium is directly related to the presence or absence of food in a particular gut region. The characteristics of Dysdercus α-glucosidase extracts are discussed and the results of quantitative estimates of this enzyme's activity are given. These estimates demonstrated the lack of any direct relationship between the level of this enzyme and the cytological appearance of the epithelium. The significance of these findings is discussed. 相似文献

Summary By use of osmium ferricyanide (OsFeCN) staining the fate of cytoplasmic membranes was followed during spermiogenesis in the cotton seed bug (Dysdercus intermedius). During early spermiogenesis interzonal lamellae of endoplasmic reticulum become aggregated as a stack of membranes traversing the entire cell body from the nucleus to the cytoplasmic bridge connecting neighbouring spermatids. Cisternae of endoplasmic reticulum ensheath the acroblast from which vesicles of different sizes are pinched off into the cytoplasm. The oxalate method was used to show that acroblast and associated vesicles are calcium-sequestering sites in spermatids. Membrane profiles with dense calcium oxalate precipitate derived from the acroblast form an uninterrupted membranous sheath at the apical side of the nucleus where the proacrosome will be attached. With further development of the spermatids, the vesicles derived from the acroblast also participate in forming a calciumsequestering sheath enveloping the axoneme and the mitochondrial nebenkern derivatives. 相似文献

Hormonal Control of Egg Dumping and Guarding in the Lace Bug, Gargaphia solani (Hemiptera: Tingidae)
This study examines the effect of juvenile hormone (JH) or a similarly acting juvenoid on the expression of maternal egg guarding and its life history alternative, egg dumping, in the lace bug, Gargaphia solani Heidemann. JH manipulations were indirect: methoprene, a synthetic JH analog, and precocene II, an allatocidal phytochemical commonly used to reduce JH synthesis, were applied exogenously to test the hypothesis that high JH titers promote egg production and egg dumping behavior, while low titers terminate egg production and initiate maternal care. As predicted, egg dumpers treated with precocene II ignored dumping opportunities and became egg guarders. Similarly, egg guarders that were treated with methoprene became gravid within 2 days and abandoned their eggs to become egg dumpers. These manipulations suggest that hormones can trigger the expression of both egg dumping and egg guarding in G. solani even when environmental conditions are inappropriate. 相似文献

Lace bugs of the genus Gargaphia specialize on taxonomically and ecologically diverse host plants. To examine the impact of predation pressure and host phenology on Gargaphia subsocial and reproductive behavior, we compared G. tiliae, a woodland species restricted to riparian trees in the genus Tilia, and G. solani, a specialist on Solanum in early successional habitats. Both lace bug species exhibit maternal care of eggs and nymphs. Predator densities associated with Solanum were higher than those associated with Tilia and were correlated with higher levels of maternal aggression exhibited by G. solani. In both habitats, artificial exclusion of predators significantly increased nymphal survivorship over maternally guarded broods. Both species reduced the costs associated with maternal care by ovipositing into the egg masses of conspecifics. Gargaphia solani and G. tiliae differed most strikingly in voltinism and thus the potential for iteroparity. Leaf age determined the reproductive future of G. tiliae nymphs independent of photoperiod or temperature. Feeding on plants with young foliage was sufficient to trigger oviposition. Constraints imposed by host plants on life-history patterns and maternal options are discussed. 相似文献

Mean egg cluster size of Luehdorfia puziloi yessoensis varied among habitats. The mean egg cluster size tended to be large when abundance of the larval food leaves expressed as the fresh weight of leaves per unit area at a given habitat was high. Since this variation was observed among closely located study plots (butterflies can easily move between study plots), the egg cluster size variation among habitats is likely to be a result of flexible response by females to varying food abundance for larvae. 相似文献

To place associations among body size, age at maturity, age, and reproductive traits of a long-lived organism in the context of current life history models based on the concept of norms of reaction, we examined data from a mark-recapture study of Blanding's turtles (Emydoidea blandingi) in southeastern Michigan during 24 of the years between 1953 and 1988. Females matured between 14 and 20 years of age. Both the smallest and largest adult females in the population were reproducing for the first time in their lives. This result suggests that a combination of differences in juvenile growth rates and ages at maturity, and not indeterminate growth, are the primary cause of variation in body size among adults. Body size variation among individuals was not related to age at sexual maturity. Females that had slower growth rates as juveniles matured later at similar mean body size compared to those with more rapid growth that matured at an earlier age. As a result, a linear model of age at sexual maturity with growth rates of primiparous females between hatching and maturity was significant and negative (R2 = 0.76). Frequency of reproduction of the largest and smallest females was not significantly different. Clutch size did not vary significantly with age among either primiparous or multiparous females. Clutch sizes of primiparous females and multiparous females were not significantly different. However, older females (>55 years minimum age) reproduced more frequently than did younger females (minimum age <36 y). 相似文献

Hard, highly calcified eggshells evolved several independent times during the history of amniotes. Because of phylogenetic conservatism of this trait, lineages in which closely related taxa differ in eggshell structure are rare. Four gekkotan families (Carphodactylidae, Diplodactylidae, Eublepharidae and Pygopodidae) have eggs with soft shells, while their close relatives (Gekkonidae) lay eggs with hard shells. Geckos thus offer a rare opportunity to compare the impact of the emergence of a hard eggshell on the economy of egg architecture. Because a sphere has the smallest surface area of all three‐dimensional solids of a given volume, spherical eggs in geckos with hard eggshells reduce calcium investment and should therefore be advantageous. Here, we document that hard‐shelled gekkonid eggs are indeed more spherical than those of the other gecko lineages. However, within gekkonids, small species lay more elongated eggs than larger species. We speculate that miniature gekkonid females, which lay larger eggs relative to body size compared with large gekkonids, produce elongate eggs in order to pass the egg through a limited pelvic opening. 相似文献

We studied the interpecific competition between 2 species of predatory aquatic bugs, Diplonychus japonicus and D. major by conducting a field experiment. We set up 3 types of experimental plots in the paddy fields where D. major predominated. The two plots contained single species of either D. japonicus or D. major, respectively, and one plot had both species in equal number. We compared the development and the reproductive performance between plots in each species. In D. japonicus, the number of eggs and early instar nymphs were significantly smaller in the plots containing both species than in the monospecific plots. However, the numbers of late instar nymphs and newly emerged adults were not significantly different between plots. The proportions of starved nymphs in both plots were larger than those in the D. japonicus's natural habitats. The final densities of adults in both plots were lower than those in the natural habitats. These results suggest that lower density of D. japonicus in these paddy fields is due to the lack of available food for nymphs rather than the effects of interspecific competition with D. major. In D. major, significant differences were not found in the number of eggs, each instar nymphs and adults. These results suggest that the effects of interspecific competition did not affect the reproductive performance of D. major. 相似文献

Clutch size, egg size, larval size and duration of larval period were estimated for samples of Bombina bombina and B. variegata from several populations. Bombina variegata lays fewer eggs per batch (mean 17.4) than B. bombina (mean 32.5). The volume of B. variegata eggs is 2.4 times greater and the dry weight 2.3 times greater than that of B. bombina. As a consequence, the volume of B. variegata hatchlings and their dry weight are respectively 1.9 times and 2.5 times greater than that of B. bombina. Analysis of variance showed that variation of egg size in B. variegata is significantly greater than in B. bombina. When reared under laboratory conditions freshly metamorphosed individuals of both species showed no difference in body size or weight. Although growth rates are equal, tadpoles of B. variegata reached metamorphosis 14 days earlier than B. bombina tadpoles because of differences in size of hatchlings. Differences in reproductive parameters found for the two European Bombina species can be interpreted as adaptations to contrasting environments in which they breed. 相似文献

In a coevolutionary arms race between an interspecific broodparasite and its host species, both are expected to evolveadaptations and counteradaptations. We studied egg discriminationin the Australian warbler (Acrocephalus australis). This speciesis currently not significantly parasitized by the seven speciesof cuckoo for which it is a suitable host. However, experimentalbrood parasitism in the warbler revealed a fine tuned egg discriminationresponse towards non-mimetic and conspecific eggs, the firstsuch evidence in an Australian passerine: (1) non-mimetic eggswere significantly more often rejected than conspecific eggs;(2) only non-mimetic dummy eggs were rejected selectively, whereas rejection of conspecific eggs entailed a rejectioncost; (3) replacement of a host's egg with a conspecific eggduring egg laying resulted in a significantly higher rejectionrate than after the day of clutch completion; (4) by contrast, rejection rate after addition of a conspecific egg was independentof nest stage; (5) conspecific eggs introduced into a clutchduring the egg laying period led to a significantly highernest desertion rate and a lower egg ejection rate than afterthe day of clutch completion; and (6) addition of a conspecificegg led to egg ejection while egg replacement with a conspecificegg led to nest desertion. The fact that this species respondsdifferentially toward different modes of artificial parasitismsuggests that its egg discrimination has evolved to minimizethe costs of rejection and parasitism. The ability to rejecthighly mimetic conspecific eggs may explain the current paucityof brood parasitism in this species. The significance of thisfor brood parasite-host coevolution is discussed. 相似文献

ABSTRACT. 1. Current models of insect oviposition predict that clutch size in parasitoids should correlate with host size, with a continuum from solitary species at one end to large gregarious broods at the other. This prediction is tested for the genus Apanteles (sensu lato).
2. The distribution of brood sizes in Apanteles is bimodal, with peaks at one (solitary species) and at about twenty (gregarious species).
3. Brood size of gregarious species correlates with host size, but when a measure of the total volume of a parasitoid brood is plotted against host size, solitary species do not lie on the same regression slope as gregarious species.
4. There is a relative shortage of gregarious species on small hosts, and a relative excess of solitary species on large hosts. Solitary species on large hosts do not fully consume the host resource.
5. The possible role of evolutionary constraints to adaptive progeny allocation in Apanteles is discussed. 相似文献
