The effect of the trematode Microphallus turgidus on its second intermediate host, the grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, was tested. To do so, we measured the susceptibility of infected and uninfected shrimp to predation by the mummichog, Fundulus heteroclitus. Shrimp behavior was compared in the presence and absence of a fish predator, and the swimming stamina and backthrust escape responses of infected and uninfected shrimp were measured. Infected shrimp were more likely to be eaten by a predator than uninfected shrimp, had lower swimming stamina, and spent more time swimming and less time motionless in the presence of a predator. There was no difference between backthrust distances traveled in response to a stimulus by either infected or uninfected shrimp. Thus, M. turgidus may increase the predation of P. pugio in the wild, possibly by affecting the swimming stamina and predator avoidance responses of the shrimp.

The grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, is common in estuaries and marshes along the east coast of the USA and is frequently infected with metacercariae of the trematode, Microphallus turgidus. To test whether or not M. turgidus has an effect on intermediate host behaviour, the length of time spent swimming and walking over 1 min and 3 min intervals and prey (Artemia) capture rates of uninfected grass shrimp and those infected with 1-10, 11-20 or 21-30 metacercarial cysts were compared. Uninfected shrimps spent significantly more time swimming than infected shrimps during the first minute of observation. There were no differences between the control and infected groups in terms of swimming at 3 min, walking at 1 and 3 min, or in numbers of prey captured. These results indicate that M. turgidus may induce little or no change in grass shrimp locomotion nor in prey capture behaviour. This is in contrast to other parasites that modify intermediate host behaviour to enhance their transmission to definitive hosts. Furthermore, these data support earlier studies indicating that M. turgidus does not affect the growth and survival of P. pugio.

The estuarine shrimp Palaemonetes pugio and P. vulgaris co-occur across a broad range in salinity. Field surveys and laboratory lethality tests suggest that low salinity conditions favor P. pugio over P. vulgaris. This study compared energetic expenditures across a range in salinity (0.5-35 ppt) to test the hypothesis that P. pugio experiences lower maintenance-energy requirements than P. vulgaris in low-salinity habitats. Standard metabolic rate (SMR) was measured as the minimum oxygen consumption rate at 25 degrees C to estimate daily maintenance-energy expenditure. SMR was greatest at 0.5 and least at 10 ppt (irrespective of species), and greater for P. vulgaris than for P. pugio. At low salinity (1.5-3 ppt), SMR was lower for P. pugio than for P. vulgaris. Energy expenditure did not coincide with the pattern predicted based upon osmoregulatory costs alone; no reduction was observed near the reported hemolymph concentration for P. vulgaris, although a minimum was observed near the hemolymph isoionic concentration for P. pugio. A local minimum in SMR by P. pugio between 1.5 and 3 ppt contrasted with relatively high SMR of P. vulgaris across this range. It appears that low-salinity habitats are energetically more favorable for P. pugio than for P. vulgaris. The results suggest an adaptive mechanism allowing P. pugio to occupy environments that present its competitor, P. vulgaris, with greater energetic challenges. While long-term exposure to very low salinity may be detrimental to both species, energetic traits of P. pugio may confer it with greater success than P. vulgaris in habitats in which salinity periodically fluctuates to low values.

The grass shrimp, Palaemonetes pugio, is an important food source for many invertebrate and fish species, including several of commercial importance. The bopyrid Probopyrus pandalicola prevents reproduction in P. pugio by sexual sterilization. The purpose of our research was to determine bopyrid prevalence in grass shrimp over the course of a year. Shrimp were collected from 2 estuarine systems in South Carolina and 2 estuarine systems in Georgia and examined for parasite presence, sex, and gravidity. Site-specific monthly prevalence ranged from 0 to 6.3%. Country Club Creek had the maximum mean +/- SE prevalence of 3.1 +/- 0.3%, and Harbour Town had the minimum of 1.3 +/- 0.3%. Maximum prevalence was concurrent with peak gravidity for Moon River; thus, at this site the negative effect of this parasite on reproductive output may be greater. Reduced egg production may affect grass shrimp abundance and ultimately the recruitment success of its predators.

The influence of the nematode Gammarinema gammari on survival, mating success, and fecundity of its host Gammarus insensibilis (Amphipoda) was investigated. The prevalence and the mean intensity of G. gammari were significantly higher in males than in females. There was a positive and significant relationship between the mean number of G. gammari and male body size, suggesting that accumulation of this parasite had no significant effect on the survival of its host. Males that harbored the metacercariae of the trematode Microphallus papillorobustus had a lower number of nematodes than those that did not harbor the trematode. Fecundity was significantly reduced in infected females, and unpaired females tended to be more frequently infected by G. gammari than paired ones. However, we found no evidence for parasite-mediated reduction in male competitiveness because the mean number of G. gammari was not significantly different between paired and unpaired males.

The abundance of six species of trematodes: Aphanurus stossichi, Bacciger israelensis, Diphterostomum israelense, Plagioporus idoneus, Leprocreadium album and L. pegorchis, parasitic in the digestive tract of marine teleostei (Sparidae) collected near Jounieh (east Mediterranean), was analysed as a function of the host-size. In two parasite/host systems, infections were observed from the lowest size classes of the sample, with a clear tendency to an increase of abundance in older fish. In four others, parasites appear only above a rather high threshold class, young individuals never being infected. In the last three parasite/host systems, host invasion may occur early or late, but infection decreases above a well defined size class, old fishes rarely or never being infected. A given trematode species, when parasitizing several host species, shows similar abundance/host size relationships, e.g., P. idoneus in Diplodus vulgaris and Oblada melanura. When more than one species of trematode infects a single host species, curves can be markedly distinct; for instance, L. pegorchis was collected from Pagellus erythrinus below 15 cm. whereas D. israelense parasitized the same fish approximately above the same size. There is no evidence that such a replacement of one trematode by another in the course of host growth is a result of inter-specific competition.

The paper describes an investigation of parasite richness in relation to host life history and ecology using data from an extensive survey of helminth parasites (cestodes, trematodes and nematodes) in Soviet birds. Correlates of parasite richness (number of parasite species per host species) were sought among 13 life-history variables, 13 ecological variables and one non-biological variable (number of host individuals examined) across a sample of 158 species of host. A statistical method to control for the effects of phylogenetic association was adopted throughout. Parasite richness correlates positively with the number of hosts examined (sample size) in all three parasite groups. Positive correlations (after controlling for the effects of sample size) were also found between host body weight and parasite richness for trematodes and nematodes, but not for cestodes.
A number of ecological variables were associated with parasite richness. However, when the effects of sample size and body weight were controlled for, only a single significant correlation (an association between trematode richness and aquatic habitat) remained. Similarly, a number of significant correlates of parasite richness were found among the life-history variables examined. Though several of these were robust to the confounding effects of sample size, all could be explained by the co-variation between life-history traits and body weight among the host species under investigation.

Abstract. Macrobrachium ohione is a migratory (amphidromous) river shrimp (Decapoda, Caridea) that may be parasitized by the branchial parasite Probopyrus pandalicola (Isopoda, Bopyridae). The parasite disrupts gonadal maturation and spawning in female shrimps, resulting in the total loss of reproduction. Shrimps are usually infected by bopyrid parasites during the late zoeal or early postlarval stages; in this study, we investigated the apparent parasite infection of adult shrimps. We analyzed the relationships between parasite body size (total length) and host shrimp body size (carapace length) to test the hypothesis that parasite infection of adult shrimps occurs during the shrimps' reproductive migrations. The results presented here indicate that infection of adult shrimps is common in M. ohione in the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, Louisiana, USA. In the two upriver sites sampled, Butte La Rose (BLR) and River Bend (RB), parasite size was not associated with host body size. In these locations, many parasitized adult M. ohione were infected with immature P. pandalicola (40.3% in BLR and 51.2% in RB), indicating that the shrimps were adults at the time of infection. A possible explanation is that when female shrimps enter the estuary to hatch larvae, they molt and spawn another brood. The smaller male shrimps that accompany the females downstream are also assumed to molt and continue growth. The intermediate host of the parasite is an estuarine copepod, and thus the parasite cryptoniscus larva that infects the host shrimp is primarily estuarine as well. Newly molted shrimps have soft cuticles, which may facilitate their infection by parasite cryptonisci. Our conclusion is that most infections of adult shrimps occur during their migration into estuarine waters, the primary habitat of infective parasite larvae, and that host vulnerability is probably increased following host ecdysis.

We conducted the first comprehensive study on the spatiotemporal structure of trematode communities in the large-mouthed valve snail, Valvata macrostoma. A total of 1103 snails were examined monthly between May and October 2007 from Lake Konnevesi, Central Finland, from a shallow (1-2 m deep) and an offshore site (5-6 m deep), located ca. 50-70 m apart. Snails were infected by 10 trematode species. The species composition and prevalence were strikingly different between the sites with high species diversity in the shallow site (all 10 species; total prevalence of sporocysts/rediae 12.1%, metacercariae 55.4%) compared to the deeper site (3 species; prevalence 15.0% and 1.9%, respectively). This difference persisted throughout our study and is probably related to the spatial distribution of bird definitive hosts, whereas the seasonal parasite dynamics are likely to be affected by changes in the age-structure of the snail population. The probability of sporocyst infections increased with snail size, but no such trend was observed in redial or metacercarial infections which decreased with host size. Our results show that generally well-described spatiotemporal differences in trematode infection of molluscs can emerge in very narrow spatial and temporal scales, which emphasizes the importance of these factors in community studies.

Infections with metacercariae of Bucephaloides gracilescens in the four-bearded rockling Enchelyopus cimbrius were studied for a year in a Norwegian fjord. The prevalence was at all times high, but abundance showed a marked decline in spring to a low level during summer. A rise in abundance, variance-to-mean ratio and frequency of smaller metacercariae in early autumn (August-September) shows infection to have occurred mainly in autumn. There were no differences in level of infection between host sexes, but a highly significant positive correlation of parasite burden with host length. No influence on the condition factor of the host was revealed, the parasite cysts in the central nervous system are believed to have low pathogenicity. A detailed account of the distribution of metacercarial cysts is given. No support for infection being via the lateral line canals is revealed, cercarial penetration is believed to be through the general surface of the head and through the unpaired fins of the trunk and tail.

Histopathological, ultrastructural and immunohistochemical investigations were conducted on 26 specimens of powan Coregonus lavaretus (L.) from Loch Lomond (Scotland). The hearts of all 26 powan (15 females and 11 males) investigated harboured metacercariae of the digenean trematode Ichthyocotylurus erraticus (Rudolphi, 1809). The vast majority of metacercariae were located either singly or as an aggregation of white cysts on the surface of the bulbus arteriosus. The intensity of infection ranged from 2 to 200 larvae heart(-1), although the number of metacercariae found on male powan did not exceed 13. Histochemically, the parasite cyst wall gave a strong positive reaction with periodic acid schiff (PAS) and a faint positive signal with Azan-Mallory stain. All the metacercariae cysts were embedded in a granulomatous proliferation of heart epicardium tissue, forming a reactive fibroconnective capsule around the parasite. The capsule enclosing the parasite (produced by the host's reaction to the parasite) measured 13.57 to 90.20 microm (37.43 +/- 3.56) in thickness. Within the capsule wall, eosinophilic granular cells (EGCs), granulocytes, melanocytes and, in some instances, partially degenerated or vacuolated epithelioid cells were observed in close proximity to the cyst wall. Pigment-bearing macrophages were scattered throughout the granulomatous host-tissue reaction and as macrophage aggregates (MAs) within the capsules surrounding parasites. Immunohistochemical tests were applied to infected heart sections using 12 different antisera. Nerve fibres immunoreactive to bombesin, substance P (SP), and atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) antisera were observed in close proximity to the parasite larvae. The presence of a serotonin-like substance was also observed within host immune-cells surrounding trematode cysts. Large cells of the epicardium were found to be immunoreactive to met-enkephalin and vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) antisera but not immunoreactive to anti-protein gene-product 9.5 (PGP9.5) sera.

Patterns of parasite load and aggregation of the bird trematode Cardiocephaloides longicollis in its main intermediate host in the Mediterranean, the annular sea bream, Diplodus annularis, were studied in a large sample collected off Valencia (Spain) and are discussed within the context of the parasite induced host mortality hypothesis. The metacercariae were located within large composite cysts of host origin in the ventricles of the optic lobes of the cerebrum. A weak immunological response was detected in older fish, which was significantly associated with the total parasite load. Although the mean abundance of C. longicollis showed a tendency to increase with host size, the infection levels were generally homogeneous with a noticeable plateauing in the intermediate size classes. The distribution of the metacercariae was aggregated and agreed with the negative binomial distribution. There was a marked decline in parasite aggregation in the largest size-class, suggesting parasite-induced host mortality in the oldest fish possibly due to predation by large non-host fish predators. On the other hand, levelling off of abundance and decrease in heterogeneity of parasite distribution within the intermediate age cohort could indicate that these sizes are being rapidly and/or constantly removed from the host population due to by-catch fishing. The overall high infection levels and the continuous recruitment across age cohorts provides evidence that an enhanced parasite transmission is taking place in the Gulf of Valencia due to increased spatial overlap of the hosts involved in the life cycle. We suggest a human-induced facilitation of the digenean life cycle due to the fact that gulls in the area feed extensively on discards, thus indicating the possibility of an unforeseen effect of fishing practices in a marine littoral system.

Synopsis Prevalence and intensity of a clinostomatid in the fishPoecilia gilliii were measured in six dry season pools of a small intermittent Costa Rican stream, and the prevalence of two diplostomulid parasites (‚diplostomulum’ and ‚neascus’) were monitored in 14 residual pools of a second intermittent stream of the same drainage. There were significant among-pool differences in the prevalence of the three parasites. There was no evidence to suggest that clinostomatid or ‚diplostomulum’ prevalence was influenced by the position of pools within the downstream gradient; however, ‚neascus’ prevalence tended to decrease with distance downstream. Host length accounted for some of the variation in parasite prevalence among pools for both diplostomulids. Prevalence and intensity of a clinostomid in the body cavity varied with host gender and body size. There was a positive relationship between body size and clinostomatid parasitization in female hosts. Most males examined were less than 50 mm (total length). For fish less than 50 mm, males were more parasitized than females. Prevalence of the two diplostomulids was not related to the relative net periphyton production or the dissolved oxygen concentration of the pools. However, a positive correlation between the density ofP. gillii and ‚diplostomulum’ prevalence was found across the fourteen pools, and ‘neascus’ prevalence was positively related to pool area.

Distribution patterns, mean intensity and prevalence of Lernaeocera lusci (Copepoda, Pennellidae) in its 2 hosts Trisopterus luscus (Teleostei, Gadidae) and Merluccius merluccius (Teleostei, Merlucciidae) were examined, together with parasitic abundance and aggregation in relation to the size of the host. The mean parasite abundance and the variance to mean abundance ratio increased with host size, suggesting that the accumulation of this parasite had no noticeable impact on the structure of either host population. Merluccius merluccius being a newly colonized host in the Mediterranean, these results are discussed in relation to current ideas on the evolution of pathogenicity in heterospecific associations.

Body size reveals a plethora of life-history, ecological, and evolutionary information about a species. It plays a critical role in success or failure during competitive, reproductive, or predator–prey interactions. Typically, there is a negative relationship between body size and population density in natural populations and communities. I analysed this relationship within and among multiple populations of two prominent monogenean parasites (>90% prevalence) on Lepomis macrochirus in three lakes in New Jersey (USA), using multiple regression models. To elucidate the causes and benefits of this relationship, I also measured host body condition via a regression index, and reproductive output of the parasite community by measuring parasite eggs shed from the host. The relationship between body size and density of infrapopulations (parasites of a single species on a single host) was positive, and the strength of this relationship for both species depended on which lake they occupied, indicating the potential for Allee effects. This relationship persists at the infracommunity level, where there was a similar positive relationship between a community weighted mean body size and density. However, this relationship did not result in greater reproductive success as measured by infracommunity egg production per individual per 24 h or egg size. The cause of this relationship also remains elusive; it was not explained by host condition or age. The results suggest that there is either no reproductive advantage to this increase in body size or the advantage conferred was not related to these measured fitness components. These findings indicate that researchers should be cautious using body size as a proxy for fitness or reproduction, while also raising further questions about the nature of the relationship between parasites on a host and that between those parasites and the host.

Two whitish elongate cysts in the left pectoral fin of Trichomycterus sp. (Osteichthyes, Trichomycteridae) were packed with Dermocystidium sp. spores. The spores were spherical and had a large PAS positive central refractile body, the cytoplasm being restricted to a narrow peripheral layer containing the nucleus. The cysts were surrounded by a thin homogeneous wall of parasite origin, and there was no encapsulation of the cysts by host tissue.

Density, body mass and parasite species richness of terrestrial mammals
We investigated the relationships between helminth species richness and body mass and density of terrestrial mammals. Cross-species analysis and the phylogenetically independent contrast method produced different results. A non-phylogenetic approach (cross-species comparisons) led to the conclusion that parasite richness is linked to host body size. However, an analysis using phylogenetically independent contrasts showed no relationship between host body size and parasite richness. Conversely, a non-phylogenetic approach generated a negative relationship between parasite richness and host density, whereas the independent contrast method showed the opposite trend – that is, parasite richness is positively correlated with host density. From an evolutionary perspective, our results suggest that opportunities for parasite colonization depend more closely on how many hosts are available in a given area than on how large the hosts are. From an epidemiological point of view, our results confirm theoretical models which assume that host density is linked to the opportunity of a parasite to invade a population of hosts. Our findings also suggest that parasitism may be a cost associated with host density. Finally, we provide some support for the non-linear allometry between density and mammal body mass (Silva and Downing, 1995), and explain why host density and host body mass do not relate equally to parasite species richness.
