The feeding habits of the Chinese minnow, Rhynchocypris oxycephalus (Sauvage & Dabry de Thiersant, 1874), were investigated in the Laohegou River, a tributary of the upper Yangtze River, China. A total of 412 specimens were collected by electrofishing in four seasons of 2012, 7 days per season. Diet composition was analyzed according to season, size classes and sex. The Chinese minnow is a generalist omnivorous species, whose diet consists of aquatic insects and plants. Besides algae, Hemiptera, Ephemerida, Trichoptera, Odonata, Diptera were the most dominat food items. The Shannon‐Wiener index on diet items showed no significant differences between major food items (p > .05) or between seasons, size classes and sexes. In contrast, fullness index and dietary breadth analysis both indicated significant diet changes between seasons. Consequently, this study provides information on feeding habits of R. oxycephalus, which may be useful in cultivation trials.  相似文献

Wolbachia is a genus of intracellular bacteria typically found within the reproductive systems of insects that manipulates those systems of their hosts. While current estimates of Wolbachia incidence suggest that it infects approximately half of all arthropod species, these estimates are based almost entirely on terrestrial insects. No systematic survey of Wolbachia in aquatic insects has been performed. To estimate Wolbachia incidence among aquatic insect species, we combined field‐collected samples from the Missouri River (251 samples from 58 species) with a global database from previously published surveys. The final database contained 5,598 samples of 2,687 total species (228 aquatic and 2,459 terrestrial). We estimate that 52% (95% CrIs: 44%–60%) of aquatic insect species carry Wolbachia, compared to 60% (58%–63%) of terrestrial insects. Among aquatic insects, infected orders included Odonata, Coleoptera, Trichoptera, Ephemeroptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, and Plecoptera. Incidence was highest within aquatic Diptera and Hemiptera (69%), Odonata (50%), and Coleoptera (53%), and was lowest within Ephemeroptera (13%). These results indicate that Wolbachia is common among aquatic insects, but incidence varies widely across orders and is especially uncertain in those orders with low sample sizes such as Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera.  相似文献

Abstract.
  • 1 A priori, there are no obvious reasons why patterns should exist in the frequency of density dependence across insect orders. However, orders may reflect related factors which influence population regulation (e.g. life-history patterns and ecology) and are difficult to quantify. The frequency of occurrence of density dependence is compared in 171 time series (of ten or more generations) from Lepidoptera, Hemiptera, Diptera, Odonata, Hymenoptera and Coleoptera. A posteriori attempts are made to identify the cause of observed patterns.
  • 2 Buhner's (1975) test found non-delayed density dependence more frequently in Odonata than Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera, which in turn showed non-delayed density dependence more frequently than Diptera, Hemiptera and Coleoptera. Similarly, detection was greater for Odonata than other orders using Dennis & Taper's (1993) test for density dependence and Crowley's (1992) test for attraction. Varley & Gradwell's (1960) test found density dependence less frequently in Hemiptera than other orders. These differences were independent of time series length, temporal trends and numbers of generations per year.
  • 3 The reasons for observed patterns in detection of density dependence (and attraction) in insect orders are not clear; however, plausible explanations are differences in: (i) intrinsic growth rate, which is correlated with body size (although evidence to support this hypothesis is weak); (ii) the sampling method used; or (iii) whether individuals come from a single population or many populations.
  • 4 Using Turchin's (1990) test, delayed (lag 2) density dependence was detected most frequently in Hymenoptera, which often show delayed diapause or are parasitoids.

The relationship of total body length to formalin dry weight for individuals of Thermo-cyclops hyalinus and Mesocyclops leuckarti, from the tropical Lake George, Uganda, is given and shows that previous estimates of individual biomass and, therefore, of zooplankton standing crop and production based on them, were too high. The annual mean standing crop of total Crustacea, in 1969–70 was 828 mg (dw) m?2 and for T. hyalinus, the dominant species, 559 mg (dw) m?2 Biomass tended to be higher in the mid-lake area than inshore. The annual mean production of T. hyalinus is now estimated to be 44 mg (dw) m?2 day.  相似文献

Synopsis Pristis microdon, P. zijsron, P. clavata and Anoxypristis cuspidata are distributed throughout the Queensland section of the Gulf of Carpentaria, Australia. In a survey of the four species, Anoxypristis cuspidata was the most abundant and was recorded in both the inshore and offshore set net fisheries. The size distribution and catch locations of A. cuspidata suggest that the inshore area to a depth of 10 m may be the preferred habitat for juveniles of this species, while adults primarily occur offshore. Pristis microdon, P. zijsron and P. clavata were recorded only in the inshore fishery with catches dominated by immature animals. Pristis microdon was caught in the inshore fishery late in the monsoonal wet season (February to April) and inhabited both freshwater and estuarine environments. Pristis zijsron occurred only on the sand and mud flats outside river mouths whilst P. clavata inhabited both the sand and mud flats and upstream estuarine habitats. Observations on reproductive staging and the capture of neonate specimens suggest that in all four pristids, pupping occurred through the wet season until the beginning of the dry season in May. A seasonal set net closure for the barramundi, Lates calcarifer and shark fisheries, which has been in place since 1980 in Queensland Gulf waters, therefore offers a measure of protection to breeding female sawfish and their offspring.  相似文献

Conservation plantings of native wildflowers were established adjacent to highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) fields to test the hypothesis that provision of resources for natural enemies increases their abundance in adjacent crop fields without increasing the abundance of pest insects. For two growing seasons, natural enemies and herbivorous insects were sampled in fields with flowering borders and in control fields where growers maintained standard mown grass perimeters. Insects were categorized according to their trophic level and their potential pest status, and their abundance was compared between years and between treatments. Syrphid flies (Diptera: Syrphidae) were significantly more abundant in fields with conservation strips, as were plant bugs (Hemiptera: Miridae), thrips (Thysanoptera: Thripidae), and hoppers (Hemiptera: Auchenorrhyncha). Aphids (Hemiptera: Aphididae), thrips, fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae), and pirate bugs (Hemiptera: Anthocoridae) decreased significantly in abundance from 2007 to 2008. Beneficial insect abundance in crop fields increased in the latter half of the season in both years and this increase was more pronounced in fields adjacent to conservation plantings. We discuss the implications of these findings for pest management and conservation of biodiversity in farmland.  相似文献

One-year old hatchery-produced chinook salmon were released into landlocked Lake Purrumbete, Victoria, in 1976 and specimens were recaptured at three-monthly intervals during the next two years. Examination of their stomach contents revealed that fish, particularly Galaxias maculatus , formed the bulk of the food of the salmon. Other items eaten included Amphipoda, Cladocera, Ostracoda and Decapoda (Crustacea), Odonata, Coleoptera, Diptera, Trichoptera and Hemiptera (Insecta) and Gastropoda (Mollusca). At the end of their first three months in the lake the salmon had increased 85% in length and over 670% in weight. After two years in the lake, their length was 582 mm and their weight was 2.73 kg. Growth rate was lowest in spring when the relative amount of fish in the stomach contents was at its lowest and there was a greater diversity of food types in the dict.  相似文献

Bunyamwera virus (BUNV) (Bunyaviridae, genus Orthobunyavirus, serogroup Bunyamwera) is considered an emerging pathogen for humans and animals in American countries. The CbaAr‐426 strain of BUNV was recovered from mosquitoes Ochlerotatus albifasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) collected in Córdoba province (Argentina), where serological studies detected high seroprevalences in humans and animals. Molecular detection of Orthobunyavirus was performed in mosquitoes collected in Córdoba province. Seventeen mosquito pools of Oc. albifasciatus, Ochlerotatus scapularis and Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae) showed positive results; four of these positive pools, all of Oc. scapularis, were sequenced. All amplicons grouped with BUNV in the Bunyamwera serogroup. The findings highlight the circulation of BUNV in Córdoba province and represent the first report of BUNV‐infected Oc. scapularis mosquitoes in Argentina.  相似文献

The benthic macroinvertebrate riffle-pool communities of two east Texas streams were sampled monthly for a period of one year. In contrast to previous studies in primarily upland areas, pools in Alazan Creek and Bernaldo Bayou contained significantly higher densities and biomass, as well as a significantly higher diversity and number of taxa. The majority of taxa collected could be characterized as pool adapted organisms, with the Diptera, Ephemeroptera, Coleoptera, and Odonata having greater numbers in pools. Perlesta, Baetis, and Cheumatopsyche were the only genera to have significant numbers in riffles at both sampling sites. A greater number of taxa were restricted to pools at both sampling locations, and although an unstable, sandy substrate was a factor in limiting colonization of riffles, riffles were not as productive as pools even in the presence of suitable substrate conditions. A cluster analysis based on similarity indices indicated that like habitats between streams were more similar to each other, than were adjacent riffle-pool complexes within streams.  相似文献

The insectivorous bug Zelus leucogrammus (Perty, 1834) (Hemiptera, Reduviidae) was found to harbor several species of trypanosomatids of the genera Leptomonas, Crithidia, Herpetomonas and Blastocrithidia. However, laboratory bred nymphs given sterile food were infected only by Blastocrithidia, the other flagellates appearing in their intestinal tract when they were fed on other insects. The Blastocrithidia was thought to belong to a single species and to be a parasite proper of Z. leucogrammus (and possibly other Hemiptera), producing luxuriant infections in the intestinal tract of the bugs captured in nature and spreading easily among isolated populations through cannibalism and ingestion of cysts; it was also abundant in the genital tract of gravid females but transovarian transmission was not proved. This Blastocrithidia experimentally infected Triatoma infestans and is very close to B. triatomae Cerisola, del Prado, Rohwedder and Bozzini, 1971. The other trypanosomatids, never numerous in naturally infected Z. leucogrammus, are acquired by the bug from many different insects, chiefly Diptera, on which it was seen to feed. Herpetomonas muscarum and C. luciliae, the common trypanosomatids among several muscoid Diptera, were isolated both from flies and from the bugs fed on them.  相似文献

A restoration project is considered a success when the initial target is met, but many targets are plausible. We evaluated the success of a restoration project in its 11th year since treatment in a southwestern ponderosa pine–bunchgrass community and the appropriateness of several targets. We measured the responses of (1) total standing crop; (2) standing crop of five functional groups (C3 and C4 graminoids, leguminous forbs, and nonleguminous perennial and annual forbs); (3) graminoid community composition; and (4) standing crop of five common graminoid species (Festuca arizonica, Muhlenbergia montana, Elymus elymoides, Carex geophila, and Poa fendleriana). Targets were quantified in remnant grass patches, which provided the standards for these targets, and were assessed in three other forest patch types (pre‐settlement tree patches, post‐settlement tree patches, and patches where all post‐settlement trees were removed). Patches where all post‐settlement trees were removed reached target levels for total standing crop, C3 and C4 graminoid standing crop, graminoid community composition, and M. montana, E. elymoides, and C. geophila standing crops. Standing crop of legumes and of F. arizonica did not increase over time in any patch type. Targets were not met in pre‐settlement patches or in patches where some post‐settlement trees were left standing, suggesting that it is unrealistic to expect equal responses across all patch types. If increasing herbaceous standing crop is a major goal, practitioners should create gaps within the pine forest canopy.  相似文献

The spread of invasive pests is an important topic in pest control and early detection is crucial for containment of invasive aliens. In this study the results of recent surveys on alien insects of ornamental urban plants in Portugal are reported. Overall, 13 alien species associated with allochthonous ornamental plants were recorded. Seven of these pests are new to the Portuguese fauna: Tinocallis kahawaluokalani (Kirkaldy); Illinoia liriodendri (Monell); Appendiseta robiniae (Gillette) (Hemiptera: Aphididae); Acizzia jamatonica (Kuwayama) (Hemiptera: Psyllidae); Dasineura gleditchiae (Osten Sacken); Obolodiplosis robiniae (Haldeman) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae); and Phytoliriomyza jacarandae Steyskal & Spencer (Diptera: Agromyzidae). Additional distribution data are also provided for other recently introduced alien pests in Portugal: Myzocallis (Lineomyzocallis) walshii (Monell) (Hemiptera: Aphididae); Platycorypha nigrivirga Burckhardt; Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera: Psyllidae); Calophya schini Tuthill (Hemiptera: Calophyidae); Corythucha ciliata (Say) (Hemiptera: Tingidae); and Lantanophaga pusillidactylus (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Pterophoridae). Three species in particular (Illinoia liriodendri, Obolodiplosis robiniae and Phytoliriomyza jacarandae) were not previously found in the Iberian Peninsula. Details on current distribution, host plants and biological remarks are given for each species. Possible origin areas, pathways and impacts are also discussed.  相似文献

This study presents the results of a landscape‐scale survey for insect floral visitors in the Skukuza Ranger District, Kruger National Park, South Africa. Floral visitors were sampled from flowering trees and shrubs along linear transects spanning the entire district. Six plant species were sampled in the late dry season (Acacia grandicornuta Gerstner, A. nigrescens Oliver, Cassia abbreviata Oliver, Combretum hereroense Schinz, Combretum zeyheri Sonder, Euclea divonorum Hiern), and eleven plant species were sampled during the rainy season (Acacia exuvialis Verdcourt, A. grandicornuta Gerstner, A. nilotica (L.) Willdenow, A. tortilis (Forsskal) Hayne, Dichrostachys cinerea Miquel, Flueggea virosa (Roxburgh) Baillon, Grewia bicolor Jussieu, G. flava De Candolle, G. flavescens Jussieu, G. monticola Sonder, and Peltophorum africanum Sonder). Coleoptera, Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera comprised the majority of floral visitors, while species of Blattodea, Diptera, Hemiptera and Neuroptera also occurred on flowers. Known or likely pollinators include bees (Hymenoptera: Apidae, Halictidae and Megachilidae) and scarab beetles (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae). These plant species appear to have generalist pollination systems, with the exception of species of Grewia L., which appear to be pollinated primarily by bees. A provisional plant–pollinator food web is presented for the eleven species of trees and shrubs which flower during the rainy season.  相似文献

I measured competitive responses of experimentally-established populations of the perennial grass, Andropogon gerardi, across a complex gradient of standing crop and species composition in the successional grasslands of southwest Michigan. The goal was to assess whether long-term (three year) population-level responses of Andropogon to competition matched the inferences made from a previous phytometer study that examined transplant responses to competition across this same gradient over a single growing season.Replicate experimental populations of Andropogon were established at seven grassland sites by sowing seed into 0.5×0.5 m plots that had been denuded of all vegetation. During the first year of the study, all Andropogon populations were maintained as monocultures by hand weeding. At the end of the first growing season, half of the monocultures were selected for continued weeding and half were left open to invasion by competitors for three years. Invasion of the unweeded populations by neighboring plants varied strongly among sites and was positively correlated with standing crop. Increased susceptibility to invasion and competition resulted in the extinction of the unweeded Andropogon populations at the two most productive sites, supporting the hypothesis that Andropogon is restricted by competition to low productivity sites in these grasslands. The finding that the intensity of competition was positively correlated with standing crop is consistent with the previous transplant study, suggesting that short-term experimental assays of competition on the growth of individual transplants may have predictive value for longer-term outcomes of competition at the population level.  相似文献

Abstract In Brazil, a severe dry season lasting for approximately 5 months and frequent fires make life difficult for cerrado insects. In certain aspects, the cerrado can be considered to be an understudied ecosystem; even basic information such as knowledge about the annual peak in abundance of different insect orders is unknown. Insect abundance patterns have only been investigated for a few groups in the cerrado region. Thus, our study concerns the temporal distribution of insect abundance in the savanna‐like vegetation of the central Brazilian cerrado (sensu stricto) in Distrito Federal. The region has a well‐defined, long dry season between May and September. The insects were sampled by window, malaise tent and pitfall traps within 1 year. We used a multiple linear regression to analyse the relationship between abundance of insects of each order and climate variables. A total of 50 127 individuals from 15 orders was collected. The orders were Coleoptera (26%), Hymenoptera (23%), Diptera (20.5%), Isoptera (20%), Homoptera (4%), Lepidoptera (4%), Orthoptera (1.5%) and Hemiptera (1%). The abundance of Diptera, Homoptera, Lepidoptera and Orthoptera was randomly distributed over time, Isoptera peaked in the first half of the wet season, Coleoptera and Hemiptera in the second half of the wet season and Hymenoptera in each season. A significant correlation was found only between Coleoptera and delayed climatic variables. There were no obvious trends that might help explain the abundance patterns observed. The study provides baseline information about phenological patterns of insect abundance and permits evaluation of this group as a resource for various food chains and different trophic levels.  相似文献

Feeding in the platypus (Ornithorhynchus anatinus) was investigated by identifying material found in the cheek pouches of animals trapped in nets in a study area on the upper Shoalhaven River, N.S.W. Benthic samples were taken in the rapids and pools of the river and the relative abundance of food items available was related to the food found in the platypus cheek pouches. The main food organisms found were insect larvae, notably Trichoptera, Diptera, Coleoptera, Ephemeroptera and Odonata. Subsidiary food items found included freshwater shrimp (Paratya australiensis), bivalve mollusks (Sphaerium sp.) and one anuran. The main food items were generally taken in direct proportion to their numerical abundance in the river. Comparisons are made with the food selected by the brown trout (Salmotrutta) from the area. Estimates are made of the weights of invertebrate food necessary to maintain a platypus in various seasonal conditions.  相似文献

The distribution and production of larval chironomids in Tjeukemeer, a shallow, moderately large and wind exposed lake, were estimated between 1969 and 1972. The following seven species together contributed more than 95% of all the individuals collected: Chironomus anthracinus, Chironomus plumosus, Cladotanytarsus mancus, Glyptotendipes pallens, Polypedilum nubeculosum, Polypedilum scalaenum and Stictochironomus histrio. Density and biomass distribution depended generally on the substrate type and its stability. The standing crop biomass was highest in the reed-beds and in a narrow 100 m wide inshore zone and low in the large offshore zone. Wind induced wave action, causing substrate instability, is likely to be the main factor responsible for these low standing crops. The mean annual larval production in the lake was: 1969, 1.8; 1970, 0.4; 1971, 1.7 and 1972, 3.7 g dry wt m–2.  相似文献

The macroinvertebrate communities of four flood control reservoirs in eastern Nebraska, differing in age and degree of eutrophy were investigated from Ekman grab samples. Generally, the longer a reservoir had been influenced by eutrophication the larger the standing crop in it. Chironomids, ceratopogonids, fingernail clams, and Hexagenia were important at various stages of eutrophication with Chironomus predominating in the most eutrophic reservoirs. Tubifex decreased with eutrophication as did Sphaerium simili while Sphaerium declive maintained its abundance and sometimes increased.The chironomids Chironomus, Coelotanypus, and Procladius, fingernail clams, and Tubifex were early colonizers in the newest reservoir and developed a total standing crop as large the first summer as in subsequent ones. However, its composition became more diverse with time. In one reservoir sampled year-round, the standing crop was largest in late fall or early winter and smallest during summer. The most accurate information on macro-invertebrate standing crops in lakes and reservoirs comes from data collected on a year-round basis.  相似文献

Environmental characteristics and macroinvertebrate assemblages of Lake Nokoué (Benin) were investigated from September 2014 to July 2016. Seasonal and hydroclimatic changes, as well as anthropogenic activities were the overriding factors affecting environmental variables investigated. Analysis of macroinvertebrate community structure with several indices revealed a community structure changing across seasons and differing between the sites. Mollusca, Crustacea and Polychaeta were most abundant in the dry seasons, especially at sites close to the ocean, whereas Oligochaeta and Insecta (Diptera, Heteroptera, Coleoptera, Odonata and Ephemeroptera) were abundant in the wet seasons, especially during flood periods (short wet season) at the sites receiving fresh water and on roots of macrophytes. A redundancy analysis placed habitat suitability (temperature and macrophytes) and trophic status variables (NO2?, NO3?, conductivity and pH) as structuring drivers for macroinvertebrate assemblages. The current study demonstrates that spatial heterogeneity of macroinvertebrates of Lake Nokoue is related to the dynamics created by input of fresh water (wet seasons) or salt water (dry seasons), as well as spatial heterogeneity of anthropogenic activities (nutrients). It offers insights into the macroinvertebrate dynamics linked to the limnology of a West African lagoon, which could contribute to a better understanding of management and conservation measures.  相似文献

Invertebrates at 20 sites on 19 Campbell Island streams were sampled over the Austral summer of 1996/97. Twelve of the 16 benthic invertebrate taxa known from the island were collected. The most abundant group was the Crustacea, which included an isopod (Notidotea lacustris) and two amphipods, one belonging to the family Eusiridae and one to the suborder Gammaridea. Five species of Diptera were found (three chironomids; Orthocladiinae sp., Chironominae sp. and Maoridiamesa insularis, as well as an empidid and a simuliid Austrosimulium campbellense). One trichopteran, the hydroptilid caddis Oxyethira albiceps and two plecopteran species Rungaperla campbelli and R. longicauda and unidentified Oligochaetes were also collected. In general, Campbell Island streams are stable, deeply incised, have unusually high salinity from wind-blown sea spray and a unique benthic invertebrate fauna. With the exception of high altitude streams with large boulders which had invertebrate communities dominated by Crustacea and the endemic stonefly of the genus Rungaperla, none of the measured environmental variables or geographic location could explain the distinctive communities found. The species-poor stream fauna and the absence of many invertebrate families commonly found on mainland New Zealand appears to be related to the extreme isolation and geological history of the island.  相似文献
