The onset of sexual behaviour in three age classes of male guppy Poecilia reticulata occurred in synchrony with the appearance of body colouration and anal fin differentiation but not with sperm production. Recent experimental work on guppies (Poecilia reticulata) hasexamined the strength of genetic and cultural (copying) factorsin determining female mate choice. Using females from a populationwith a heritable preference for the amount of orange body colorpossessed by males, prior work discovered that a threshold differencein orange color among males existed below which females wouldchoose a less orange male if they observed another female choosethat male, but above which they consistently preferred the moreorange of the males, regardless of whether they viewed anotherfemale prefer the less orange male. I tested whether this thresholdcan be shifted by increasing the amount of mate-copying informationavailable to a female. I demonstrate that when a female hasthe opportunity to see two different model females independentlyprefer the less orange of two males or a single female neara drab male for a longer period of time (twice as long as inprior work), the observer female prefers this drab male evenwhen males dramatically differ in orange coloration. 相似文献

Male guppies Poecilia reticulata court almost continuously and often indulge in sneaky mating attempts. Female guppies, on the other hand, devote much of their time to foraging. This paper demonstrates that both sexes reduce their feeding rate in mixed-sex groups relative to single sex ones and suggests that the decrease is less pronounced for females than for males. Thus males make feeding and mating decisions that are dependent on hunger while female foraging behaviour is constrained by sexual harassment. The observed sex differences in behaviour are a consequence of asymmetrical mating costs in males and females. 相似文献

The intensity of sexual selection is influenced by environmental conditions because these conditions influence signal propagation and the risks of the signal being exploited by predators and parasites. We explore the possibility that spatial or temporal heterogeneity in environmental signalling conditions (in this case light spectrum) may induce fluctuating sexual selection on male behaviour and ornamentation in guppies. We used shade cloth and filters to experimentally manipulate light spectrum, mimicking conditions found naturally: early morning/late afternoon light (SC treatment), midday forest shade (F89 filter treatment) and midday woodland shade (F55 filter treatment). Females were more responsive to male courtship and males were less likely to attempt sneak copulations under F55 light than the other two treatments. By contrast, male display rate was not influenced by treatment. Females tended to prefer the same males under SC and F55 light, but attractiveness in these treatments was unrelated to attractiveness under F89 light. There were similarities among treatments in the traits that females preferred: females preferred males with larger areas of orange in all three treatments. There were, however, also some differences, including preference for larger males under F89 light and for smaller males under the other treatments. Overall, the influence of ambient light spectrum on the relative importance of mate choice and male sneak copulation may have important implications for the mode and strength of sexual selection in different environments. The findings on attractiveness and preference functions, however, suggest that light spectrum only weakly affects the direction of sexual selection by female choice. 相似文献

The evolution of group-living has been at the heart of behavioral ecology, since the inception of this discipline in the mid 1960's. Here, we provide the first evidence for a direct fitness benefit accrued when an individual is paired with a conspecific that has recently interacted with a predator. Male guppies have a significantly higher probability of surviving encounters with a predator when paired with a partner that has survived a recent encounter with a predator versus a predator-naive partner (χ2 = 7.43, df = 1, P = 0.006). Furthermore, guppies prefer to associate with conspecifics that have recently encountered predators over inexperienced partners (one-tailed binomial test, P = 0.026). Increased survival as a function of interactions with partners that have survived an encounter with a predator, coupled with a preference for such partners, adds a new and important component to the benefits of living in social groups. 相似文献

Social cues,however, such as the mate choice of conspecifics, may also playan important role in such decisions. Previous work has shownthat female guppies of similar age copy each other's choiceof mates. Here we examine the effect of relative age on matechoice copying in the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, and examinewhether younger individuals are more likely to copy the matechoice of older conspecifics than vice versa. Ultraviolet (UV) vision is well documented for many speciesof vertebrates. UV cues are known to be used in foraging, navigationand in mate choice. We conducted a series of behavioral experimentsto investigate the role of UV perception in mate choice inboth female and male guppies (Poecilia reticulata). In ourexperiments the visual appearance of potential mates was manipulatedusing either UV transmitting (UV+) or UV blocking (UV-) filters.Female guppies significantly preferred UV+ males. Male guppiestended to prefer UV- females, but their preferences were marginallynonsignificant. Further experiments investigating the roleof luminance, indicate that UV wavelengths are probably beingused for color discrimination rather than for detecting differencesin brightness. These experiments raise the possibility thatUV is used in mate assessment in different ways by male andfemale guppies. This may reflect the different strategies thatthe two sexes have in order to maximize reproductive success.To our knowledge, these are the first data showing that UVis used by any fish species in mate selection. 相似文献

This study examined the effect of experience on the patternof mate choice in female guppies. Females from some naturalpopulations are known to discriminate among males on the basisof the relative area of orange in the color pattern. We exposedmaturing female guppies to groups of males that differed inphenotvpic distribution of orange coloration (high orange, loworange, and mixed) and tested their subsequent mating preferences.Females that had been exposed to high-orange or low-orange malegroups showed no discrimination in choice tests, but femalesexposed to mixed male groups favored high-orange males overlow-orange males. These results demonstrate that mating preferencesof females can be modified depending on prior experience. Femalesmay be able to adjust their pattern of mate choice dependingon the degree to which choice cues permit effective discriminationamong males. This potential for short-term modification of matechoice patterns could affect the evolutionary outcome of sexualselection 相似文献

Twelve polymorphic microsatellite DNA loci were isolated from genomic guppy DNA. We assessed the level of genetic diversity for these loci using individuals from five native Trinidadian populations. All the loci were polymorphic although there were considerable differences among loci and populations in allele frequencies. Within populations, the number of alleles ranged from 1 to 22 and observed heterozygosities ranged from 0.000 to 0.990. The objective of this experiment was to determine if differentwater velocities during ontogeny affect male physical condition,male signal intensity, and female mating preferences in theguppy (Poecilia reticulata). Guppies were raised in aquariain either high or low water velocities and fed in excess. Analysisof 72 males from four replicates indicated that high velocitymales had longer mean displays and spent more total time displayingthan low velocity males. These males also had significantlyfaster swimming speeds, wider caudal peduncles, and were moreattractive to females than low velocity males. There were nodifferences in display rates, body widths, standard lengths,or copulation attempts between high and low velocity males.These results indicate that water velocity conditions duringontogeny act as a proximal factor that influences the displaybehavior of guppies. Water velocity caused an indirect increasein the power of the male display to produce a female sexualresponse. The morpho-metric measurements suggest that the proximalmechanism behind the increased display intensity was the increasedmuscle development of males raised in high water velocities,which resulted in longer prolonged swimming speeds and moreintense displays. Thirty‐nine polymorphic microsatellite DNA markers were isolated from the guppy (Poecilia reticulata) genomic library. All of the loci showed moderate allelic variation ranging from two to seven alleles, with observed heterozygosities from 0.000 to 0.938. Although Trinidadian populations of the guppy, Poecilia reticulata, show considerable adaptive genetic differentiation, they have been assumed to show little or no reproductive isolation. We tested this assumption by crossing Caroni (Tacarigua River) and Oropuche (Oropuche R.) drainage populations from Trinidad's Northern Range, and by examining multiple aspects of reproductive compatibility in the F1, F2 and BC1 generations. In open-aquarium experiments, F1 males performed fewer numbers of mating behaviours relative to parental population controls. This is the first documentation of hybrid behavioural sterility within a species, and it suggests that such sterility may feasibly be involved in causing speciation. The crosses also uncovered hybrid breakdown for embryo viability, brood size and sperm counts. In contrast, no reductions in female fertility were detected, indicating that guppies obey Haldane's rule for sterility. Intrinsic isolation currently presents a much stronger obstacle to gene flow than behavioural isolation, and our results indicate that Trinidadian populations constitute a useful model for investigating incipient speciation. 相似文献

Populations of the guppy, Poecilia reficulata , in N. Trinidad exhibit marked population differentiation in allozyme frequencies. Here we investigate six further populations electrophoretically at 25 enzyme-coding loci to examine patterns in geographical structuring, genotypic distributions and genetic diversity. With one exception, possibly related to an experimental introduction, populations divided broadly (dendrogram of Nei's mean genetic identity, Ī) in accordance with proposed ancestral colonization. Most populations were in Hardy Weinberg equilibrium, though some significant deficits in heterozygotes were detected. Incorporating information from published data, markedly hjgher levels of genetic diversity (mean observed heterozygosity, o ) were recorded in lowland [o = 0.0382 ± k0406 ( s.e .), n = 9] compared with upstream populations [o = 0.0112 ± 00034 (S.E.), n = 9]. Fifty‐one microsatellite DNA markers of guppy (Poecilia reticulata) were developed. All of the markers detected moderate allelic variation. The number of alleles for each locus ranged from two to 10. Observed and expected heterozygosities varied from 0.10 to 0.63 and from 0.23 to 0.77, respectively. Three additional fish species of family Poeciliidae were used for the cross‐species amplification of these markers. A preliminary study was conducted to investigate the effects of the extracts of 112 medicinal plant species, collected from the southern part of Thailand, on Aedes aegypti. Studies on larvicidal properties of plant extracts against the fourth instar larvae revealed that extracts of 14 species showed evidence of larvicidal activity. Eight out of the 14 plant species showed 100% mosquito larvae mortality. The LC50 values were less than 100μg/mL (4.1μg/ mL-89.4μg/mL). Six plant species were comparatively more effective against the fourth instar larvae at very low concentrations. These extracts demonstrated no or very low toxicity to guppy fish (Poecilia reticulata), which was selected to represent most common non-target organism found in habitats ofAe. aegypti, at concentrations active to mosquito larvae. Three medicinal plants with promising larvicidal activity, having LC50 and LC50 values being 4.1 and 16.4 μg/mL for Mammea siamensis, 20.2 and 34.7 μg/mL forAnethum graveolens and 67.4 and 110.3μg/mL forAnnona muricata, respectively, were used to study the impact of the extracts on the life cycle ofAe. aegypti. These plants affected pupal and adult mortality and also affected the reproductive potential of surviving adults by reducing the number of eggs laid and the percentage of egg hatchability. When each larval stage was treated with successive extracts at the LC50 value, the first instar larvae were found to be very susceptible to A. muricata and the second instar larvae were found to be susceptible to A. graveolens, while the third and fourth instar larvae were found to be susceptible to M. siamensis. These extracts delayed larval development and inhibited adult emergence and had no adverse effects on P. reticulata at LC50 and LC50 values, except for the M. siamensis extract at its LC50 value. 相似文献
