We treated Norway spruce (Picea abies) stems with methyl jasmonate (MeJA) to determine possible quantitative and qualitative effects of induced tree defenses on pheromone emission by the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. We measured the amounts of 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol and (S)-cis-verbenol, the two main components of the beetle's aggregation pheromone, released from beetle entrance holes, along with phloem terpene content and beetle performance in MeJA-treated and untreated Norway spruce logs. As expected, phloem terpene levels were higher and beetle tunnel length was shorter (an indication of poor performance) in MeJA-treated logs relative to untreated logs. Parallel to the higher phloem terpene content and poorer beetle performance, beetles in MeJA-treated logs released significantly less 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol and (S)-cis-verbenol, and the ratio between the two pheromone components was significantly altered. These results suggest that host resistance elicited by MeJA application reduces pheromone emission by I. typographus and alters the critical ratio between the two main pheromone components needed to elicit aggregation. The results also provide a mechanistic explanation for the reduced performance and attractivity observed in earlier studies when bark beetles colonize trees with elicited host defenses, and extend our understanding of the ecological functions of conifer resistance against bark beetles.  相似文献

Isolations of microorganisms were made from the sapwood of Norway spruce ( Picea abies ) (L.) Karst. infested by the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus L. The most important group of fungi isolated, the species of Ophiostomataceae, is treated. Ten species were isolated, of which Ophiostoma polonicum Siem. appears to be the most active invader of the sapwood. Three new species are described, Ophiostoma ainoae sp. nov., O. flexuosum sp. nov. and O. cucullatum sp. nov. and three new combinations are proposed, O. davidsonii (Olchow. & Reid.) comb. nov., O. europhioides (Wright & Cain) comb. nov. and O. sagmatospora (Wright & Cain) comb. nov.  相似文献

Abstract:  Semiochemical interactions between the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus , its predators Medetera setiventris , Thanasimus formicarius and Thanasimus femoralis , and the host Norway spruce, Picea abies , were studied in the field. The chemicals S - cis -verbenol, 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol, ipsdienol, (+)- α -pinene, (−)- α -pinene, (±)- α -pinene, limonene, camphor and their naturally occuring mixtures were used as trap baits in a multiple-choice design that allowed for comparison of their attractivity for the focal species. Medetera was attracted to both the prey aggregation pheromone and its multifunctional component, ipsdienol. On the contrary, both Thanasimus species responded predominantly to ipsdienol and less to the prey aggregation pheromone. In the case of I. typographus , the attractivity of aggregation pheromone seems to be increased by the addition of a mixture of monoterpenic tree volatiles, and by addition of ipsdienol. Bark beetles and predators showed species-specific responses to volatile mixtures representing different stages of tree decay and different stages of bark beetle colony establishment. These responses correlates with the optimal foraging habitat of each species. None of the predator species responded to 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol, a substantial component of I. typographus pheromonal bouquet, thus it is hypothesized that only substances of monoterpenic origin attract predators.  相似文献

The spruce bark beetle Ips typographus is one of the major insect pests of mature Norway spruce forests. In this study, a model describing the temperature-dependent thresholds for swarming activity and temperature requirement for development from egg to adult was driven by transient regional climate scenario data for Sweden, covering the period of 1961–2100 for three future climate change scenarios (SRES A2, A1B and B2). During the 20th century, the weather supported the production of one bark beetle generation per year, except in the north-western mountainous parts of Sweden where the climate conditions were too harsh. A warmer climate may sustain a viable population also in the mountainous part; however, the distributional range of I. typographus may be restricted by the migration speed of Norway spruce. Modelling suggests that an earlier timing of spring swarming and fulfilled development of the first generation will significantly increase the frequency of summer swarming. Model calculations suggest that the spruce bark beetle will be able to initiate a second generation in South Sweden during 50% of the years around the mid century. By the end of the century, when temperatures during the bark beetle activity period are projected to have increased by 2.4–3.8 °C, a second generation will be initiated in South Sweden in 63–81% of the years. The corresponding figures are 16–33% for Mid Sweden, and 1–6% for North Sweden. During the next decades, one to two generations per year are predicted in response to temperature, and the northern distribution limit for the second generation will vary. Our study addresses questions applicable to sustainable forest management, suggesting that adequate countermeasures require monitoring of regional differences in timing of swarming and development of I. typographus , and planning of control operations during summer periods with large populations of bark beetles.  相似文献

The ascomycete fungus Metschnikowia typographi sp.nov. is described. It infects the spruce bark beetles Ips typographus L. and Ips amitinus Eichl. Masses of vegetative cells and navicular asci (I. typographus 13-17 x 2 microns; I. amitinus 17-22 x 2 microns) were found in cells of the midgut epithelium and in the body cavity of infected beetles. Each ascus contains two needle-shaped ascospores flattened in the central part, 0.5-1.5 x 0.3 x 13-15 microns and pointed at both ends. The parasitic species of Metschnikowia, M. bicuspidata, M. artemiae, M. unicuspidata, M. wickerhami and M. typographi are discussed as a special group of the genus characterized by morphological characters.  相似文献

In a recent study, we reported a previously undescribed behavior in which a bark beetle exuded oral secretions containing bacteria that have antifungal properties, and hence defend their galleries against pervasive antagonistic Hyphomycete fungi. Actinobacteria, a group known for their antibiotic properties, were the most effective against fungi that invade the spruce beetle galleries. In the present study, we describe the isolation and identification of microorganisms from oral secretions of three bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae): the spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis Kirby, the mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins, and the pine engraver, Ips pini Say. Bacteria isolated from these three species span the major bacterial classes α-, β-, and γ-Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria, except for D. ponderosae , which yielded no α-proteobacteria or Bacteroidetes isolates. Spruce beetles and pine engraver beetles had similar numbers of α-proteobacteria isolates, but pine engravers yielded twice as many Bacteroidetes isolates as spruce beetles. In contrast, mountain pine beetles yielded more isolates in the β- and γ-proteobacteria than spruce beetles and pine engravers. The highest percentage of Actinobacteria was obtained from spruce beetles, followed by pine engravers and mountain pine beetles. All of the fungal isolates obtained from the three beetle species were Ascomycetes. The greatest fungal diversity was obtained in spruce beetles, which had nine species, followed by pine engravers with five, and mountain pine beetles with one.  相似文献

Abstract:  Tomicus piniperda and Hylurgops palliatus colonize susceptible host trees by responding to host-specific odour signals as well as by avoiding volatiles emanating from non-host conifers. In the field, the pine shoot beetle, T. piniperda , responded in high numbers to natural odour sources provided by their host tree, Pinus sylvestris , while the non-host conifers Larix decidua , Picea abies , or Pseudotsuga menziesii were significantly less attractive. In contrast, the spruce bark beetle, Hylurgops palliatus , preferentially responded to its main host, P. abies . Furthermore, T. piniperda attacks on P. sylvestris bolts decreased in presence of bark and wood particles from the non-host P. abies , whereas particles from P. menziesii appeared not to affect T. piniperda attacks. Apparently, tree-specific volatiles act at close range as specific signals that lead to the successful discrimination and colonization of the respective host tree species.  相似文献

Secondary attraction to aggregation pheromones plays a central role in the host colonization behavior of the European spruce bark beetle Ips typographus. However, it is largely unknown how the beetles pioneering an attack locate suitable host trees, and eventually accept or reject them. To find possible biomarkers for host choice by I. typographus, we analyzed the chemistry of 58 Norway spruce (Picea abies) trees that were subsequently either (1) successfully attacked and killed, (2) unsuccessfully attacked, or (3) left unattacked. The trees were sampled before the main beetle flight in a natural Norway spruce-dominated forest. No pheromones were used to attract beetles to the experimental trees. To test the trees' defense potential, each tree was treated in a local area with the defense hormone methyl jasmonate (MeJ), and treated and untreated bark were analyzed for 66 different compounds, including terpenes, phenolics and alkaloids. The chemistry of MeJ-treated bark correlated strongly with the success of I. typographus attack, revealing major chemical differences between killed trees and unsuccessfully attacked trees. Surviving trees produced significantly higher amounts of most of the 39 analyzed mono-, sesqui-, and diterpenes and of 4 of 20 phenolics. Alkaloids showed no clear pattern. Differences in untreated bark were less pronounced, where only 1,8-cineole and (-)-limonene were significantly higher in unsuccessfully attacked trees. Our results show that the potential of individual P. abies trees for inducing defense compounds upon I. typographus attack may partly determine tree resistance to this bark beetle by inhibiting its mass attack.  相似文献

The behavior of 118 spruce bark beetles, Ips typographus,was observed on trees under colonization. Most individuals were followed from when they landed until they entered or left the tree. Both males and females spent most time inspecting crevices and searching for a place to start boring or for a hole to enter. These behaviors accounted for 87 and 70% of all behavioral acts recorded for males and females, respectively. Females entered galleries with males only after a period of pushing at the gallery entrance. Males spent on average 3 min and females 4 min on the bark before entering or leaving the tree. Thirty-three percent of the beetles eventually entered the tree, 31% flew away, 35% dropped from the host, and one beetle was eaten by a predator. The results are discussed in relation to the question of mate choice in bark beetles and to studies on attack dynamics of spruce bark beetle populations.  相似文献

Abstract:   The development of the natural enemy complex, its within-tree distribution and the resulting mortalities imposed on bark beetles were investigated during two consecutive years (1994, 1995) at the peak of an Ips typographus infestation. For this reason bolts from infested spruce trees were incubated until the inhabiting insects had emerged. Some 17 000 antagonists were identified and found to belong to 16 predatory and 14 parasitic insect species. Among the predators the Dolichopodidae (Dip.) were most abundant, while among the parasitoids the Pteromalidae (Hym.) ranked first. Parasitoids preferred the upper tree parts, while predators were more abundant in the lower parts. Total bark beetle mortality was assessed based on the literature data on the per capita consumption of the antagonistic larvae. In the first year, the most destructive group were the dolichopodid flies, killing three to seven times more bark beetle larvae than the second ranking Lonchaeidae (Dip.) and the Pteromalidae. In the second year, the pteromalid parasitoids killed 2.5 times more larvae than the dolichopodids. Total bark beetle survival was assessed to decrease from 46 to 18% in the course of the 2 years.  相似文献

Our research used a combination of passive traps, funnel traps with lures, baited trees, and surveys of long-term thinning plots to assess the impacts of different levels of stand basal area (BA) on bark beetle tree attack and on trap captures of Ips spp., Dendroctonus spp., and their predators. The study occurred at two sites in ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws., forests, from 2004 to 2007 during low bark beetle populations. Residual stand BA ranged from 9.0 to 37.0 m2/ha. More predators and bark beetles were collected in passive traps in stands of lower BA than in stands of higher BA; however, significance varied by species and site, and total number of beetles collected was low. Height of the clear panel passive traps affected trap catches for some species at some sites and years. When pheromone lures were used with funnel traps [Ips pini (Say) lure: lanierone, +03/-97 ipsdienol], we found no significant difference in trap catches among basal area treatments for bark beetles and their predators. Similarly, when trees were baited (Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte lure: myrcene, exo-brevicomin and frontalin), we found no significant difference for days to first bark beetle attack. Surveys of long-term thinning treatments found evidence of bark beetle attacks only in unthinned plots (approximately 37 m2/ha basal area). We discuss our results in terms of management implications for bark beetle trapping and control.  相似文献

The applicability of qualitative analysis and modelling is discussed with reference to the population dynamics of the spruce bark beetle Ips typographus . On the basis of a set of assumptions and postulates, the structure of the population dynamical interactions is discussed. Dynamic analysis suggest that the Scandinavian spruce bark beetle population is a stable system which may be triggered into "boom and bust" dynamics. We suggest that qualitative analysis should proceed, explicitly, through four steps: (1) An explicit statement of the biological assumptions and postulates. (2) A structural analysis, wherein the critical interaction network of the system is defined. (3) An equilibrium analysis, wherein the potential equilibrium points of the key organism (e.g., the pest species) are deduced. (4) A dynamic analysis, wherein the multispecies equilibrium points are found and their sensitivity to pertuberation analyzed. This formal approach should expose many and varied population systems to the interpretive and explanatory powers of qualitative analysis.  相似文献

Abstract:  Tree-killing ability of Pityogenes chalcographus was experimentally investigated by baiting living spruce Picea abies with synthetic aggregation pheromone, thereby exposing them to beetle attack. Reproductive success was estimated by rearing beetles from stem sections taken from killed trees. The presence of Ips typographus on several killed trees allowed a comparison of reproductive success in the presence and absence of this species. Furthermore, the possibility that breeding material colonized by P. chalcographus may induce subsequent attacks by I. typographus on nearby trees was also studied. The tree killing ability of P. chalcographus was low as only 8% of the baited trees, attacked by P. chalcographus alone, were killed. Tree death was strongly related to the presence of I. typographus , which is in line with the association with aggressive wood-living fungi in this species. The reproductive success was low, with on average less than one daughter beetle produced per mother beetle. The success was significantly higher in trees also inhabited by I. typographus . Tree-parts colonized by P. chalcographus induced almost no attacks by I. typographus on nearby trees.  相似文献

High-value trees, such as those located in residential, recreational, or administrative sites, are particularly susceptible to bark beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) attack as a result of increased amounts of stress associated with drought, soil compaction, mechanical injury, or vandalism. Tree losses in these unique environments generally have a substantial impact. The value of these individual trees, cost of removal, and loss of esthetics may justify protection until the main thrust of a bark beetle infestation subsides. This situation emphasizes the need for ensuring that effective insecticides are available for individual tree protection. In this study, we assess the efficacy of bifenthrin (Onyx) and carbaryl (Sevin SL) for protecting: ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex. Laws., from western pine beetle, Dendroctonus brevicomis LeConte, in California; mountain pine beetle, Dendroctonus ponderosae Hopkins in South Dakota; and Ips spp. in Arizona; lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta Dougl. ex Loud., from D. ponderosae in Montana; pinyon, Pinus edulis Engelm. in Colorado and Pinus monophylla Torr. and Frem. in Nevada from pinyon ips, Ips confusus (LeConte); and Engelmann spruce, Picea engelmannii Parry ex. Engelm. from spruce beetle, Dendroctonus rufipennis (Kirby) in Utah. Few trees were attacked by Ips spp. in Arizona and that study was discontinued. Sevin SL (2.0%) was effective for protecting P. ponderosa, P. contorta, and P. monophylla for two field seasons. Estimates of efficacy could not be made during the second field season in P. edulis and P. engelmannii due to insufficient mortality in untreated, baited control trees. Two field seasons of efficacy was demonstrated in P. ponderosa/D. brevicomis and P. monophylla for 0.06% Onyx. We conclude that Onyx is an effective individual tree protection tool, but repeated annual applications may be required in some systems if multiyear control is desired.  相似文献

Invasive populations of small spruce bark beetle Ips amitinus were first registered in 2019 in the southeast of Western Siberia. In natural stands of Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour), several hundred hectares of outbreak foci of the alien bark beetle were identified. In 2020, a local focus of the bark beetle was found in the conifer collection in the arboretum “Kedr” of the Institute of Monitoring Climatic and Ecological Systems SB RAS, 30 km from Tomsk. The bark beetle caused the main damage to the collection of pines. I. amitinus colonized both host plants Scotch pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) and mountain pine (Pinus mugo Turra), which were previously known to it in the native range in Europe, and the local Siberian species Siberian pine (Pinus sibirica Du Tour), Siberian spruce (Picea obovata Ledeb.) and introduced Far Eastern Korean pine (Pinus koraiensis Sieb. et Zucc.). Demographic characteristics of I. amitinus studied on damaged trees indicate its high reproduction potential in Siberia. The bark beetle outbreak focus was suppressed; however, this plantation requires further annual monitoring of pest abundance and distribution, both to preserve the scientific dendroecological field station and to study the implementation of sential plant conception in relation to the invasion of I. amitinus.  相似文献

松墨天牛Monochamus alternatus Hope是传播松材线虫病的主要媒介,引诱剂是抑制松墨天牛种群数量的无公害调控有效方式之一。本研究通过在中国浙江富阳的林间试验测定了6种小蠹类引诱剂与1种天牛引诱剂不同组合联用对松墨天牛成虫以及其他蛀干害虫的诱捕效果。结果表明: 横坑切梢小蠹Tomicus minor引诱剂3-carene-10-ol、云杉八齿小蠹Ips typographus引诱剂2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol、欧洲榆小蠹Scolytus multistriatus引诱剂4-methyl-3-heptanol和纵坑切梢小蠹T. piniperda引诱剂verbenol分别与松墨天牛引诱剂联用后,对松墨天牛的引诱效果无显著性差异(P<0.05)。西部松大小蠹Dendroctonus brevicomis 引诱剂exo-brevicomin或黄杉大小蠹D. pseudotsugae引诱剂1-methylcyclohex-2-en-l-ol与松墨天牛引诱剂联用后对松墨天牛的诱捕效果有减弱的趋势。另外,与单独使用中国天牛引诱剂相比,小蠹类引诱剂与其联用后在诱捕其他蛀干害虫的种类和个体数量上均有所减少。  相似文献

The Red-belted Bracket (Fomitopsis pinicola) is one of the major decomposers of coniferous wood in Europe and can reach high densities after outbreaks of bark beetles. However, factors of dead wood type and decay stage, which determine the growth of reproductive biomass, i.e. basidiomes, remain unclear. In 2013, we surveyed 1280 dead wood objects and vital trees in spruce stands killed by the bark beetle Ips typographus in 2012, 2002, 1992 and in undisturbed stands for the presence, number, mean basidiome size and total volume of basidiomes. Living basidiomes were equally abundant on dead wood 1, 11, and 21 y after bark beetle outbreak, but were lacking on living trees. Our results indicate that F. pinicola is an effective early colonizer of the huge resource pulse of dead wood caused by the outbreak of bark beetles and basidiomes can persist for 21 y.  相似文献

The achievement of the Scandinavian campaign is seen in the swift development and unorthodox transfer of an innovative trapping technique into the management of pest populations of the spruce engraver Ips typographus without the use of pesticides. The pheromone traps proved to be far more efficient in the prevention of engraver reproduction and the reduction of beetle numbers than the cumbersome trap trees they replaced. The wholesale application of pheromone traps as an integrated part of engraver pest management is justified alone by the empirically proven benefits that result from a "surveillance with the intent to control", although appraisal of the actual impact of trapping on the population density remains scientifically ambiguous for the lack of reliable methodology. Furthermore, the campaign opens a new era in bark beetle management by stipulating for the commercial availability of pheromones and traps as well as for research on basic and applied aspects. As the years to come may show, behaviour chemistry is likely to bear more promises to engraver management than just trapping techniques.  相似文献
