The effects of chronic treatment (30 days) with the 5-HT1A receptor partial agonist buspirone (0.05, 1 and 10 mg/kg i.p.) on the behaviour of C57BL/6J female mice exposed to long-lasting psychoemotional influence were studied. The influence involved forced living of each female with an aggressive male separated with a perforated transparent partition in the same cage and daily female's presence during 10-min intermale confrontations behind a partition caused by introducing of another male to the aggressive male. Chronic buspirone injection (in all used doses) did not affect the behaviour of females estimated in the "partitions" and "open field" tests at the end of the drug treatment. The anxiolytic effect of buspirone only at the dose of 1 mg/kg on the female's plus-maze behaviour was revealed. In the Porsolt, test buspirone in the dose of 1 mg/kg caused a slight increase in the duration of immobility indicating a slight pro-depressive effect. Thus, chronic buspirone treatment of females exposed to the long-lasting psychoemotional impact has a different effect on their behaviour depending on the dose and test conditions.  相似文献

Differences in the type of behaviour in capable ("maze-bright") and incapable ("maze-dull") Tryon rats have been demonstrated in the situation with pain-irritated partner by the method of "emotional resonance". Most "bright" rats belonged to the type not avoiding the signals of another pain-irritated rat, they revealed a persistent ecologically defensive reaction of preferring a small closed space. The type of anxiety behaviour prevailed in the group of "dull" rats. In the open field test "bright" rats were characterized by low locomotor activity and high level of defecation and "dull" rats by high activity and low defecation. Increased levels of superoxide dismutase activity and high content of thiobarbituric acid-reactive material were observed in brains of dull rats. The interrelations between behavioural and molecular levels of defensive response to stress is discussed.  相似文献

Method of major components, a variety of factor analysis, was used for evaluation of rats behaviour motivational structure in the open field test. 40 outbred rats of Wistar line (20 males and females) were examined in which 22 behaviour characteristics were studied. It was shown that a greater part (60%) of rats individual behaviour variability in the open field test was determined by the action of three major components (factors), which were defined as "investigation", "fear" and "shifted activity". Factor structure was studied of main characteristics of behaviour, recorded in the open field test. The use of factor analysis allowed to carry out animals classification on the basis of their disposition in coordinates of the obtained major components.  相似文献

During a six-day period the energetics of the suspension feeding larvae of the mosquito Culex torrentium were studied. An experimental assessment of ingestion, growth and respiration were made at near to field conditions. Assimilation and egestion were calculated and an energy budget for an average larva during the experimental period was established. Gut retention time was measured by marking the gut content with charcoal. Organic carbon in the gut contents, of larvae feeding on natural food, and in the tissues (i.e. to establish growth from 2nd and 4th instar) were measured by an elemental analyser. Oxygen consumption was measured as a decrease in volume of a closed system where the respired carbon dioxide was absorbed by KOH. Only 1.6% of ingested organic carbon was assimilated. The ratio between respiration and growth was 13.8. The high value of the ratio is suggested to occur because of the very active behaviour of the larvae. The results are discussed in relation to the energetics of other aquatic primary consumers (Simuliidae and Trichoptera).  相似文献

Mating behaviour between a dwarf male and its hermaphrodite partner was observed for the first time in cirripedes using the androdioecious barnacle Scalpellum scalpellum. Mating between hermaphrodites was also observed. The dwarf males are located on the rim of the mantle cavity of the hermaphrodite partner. When mating, the male extends the penis, which is four times longer than its body. The penis first assumes a straight stance where it is waved around in a searching mode. Upon touching the cirri of the hermaphrodite, the penis and the cirri engage in prolonged contact during which hermaphrodite feeding is suspended. Thereafter the penis assumes a U-bend to reach into the brood chamber, where after the mantle valves are closed tightly around the penis. The nearly transparent penis is a tube of very thin cuticle, equipped with pairs of side branches but not containing any visible tissue. The penis enables the minute male, situated outside the brood chamber, to securely deposit sperm into its partner. Adjacently situated hermaphrodites interact socially in between feeding sessions by reorienting themselves on the peduncle to touch each other with their cirri. This can be followed by precopulatory behaviour, where one or both individuals extend the penis to touch their partner, leading again to actual copulation where the penis of one individual is inserted into the other. We discuss the results in the context of the diverse reproductive strategies found in cirripede barnacles.  相似文献

Rats behaviour in the "open field" changed in 2 hrs after a single episode of hypoglycaemia was abolished with glucose whereas no changes occurred in their stereotyped behaviour and intraspecies interaction. In 24 hrs quantitative parameters of the "open field" behaviour normalised although the behaviour still had an altered structure. At the same time, amphetamine-induced stereotyped behaviour's indices became reduced. These and other findings suggest some deeper behavioural changes in rats during their recovery from repeated hypoglycaemic episodes and absence of synchronisation of the insulin effects.  相似文献

Modification of rats behaviour in an "hopen field" test was investigated, induced by an acoustic stimulus, previously subjected to conditioning in a shuttle chamber in experiments with possibility and impossibility of avoidance from electrical shock. It has been established that presentation of a stimulus having the meaning of a danger signal, in a new situation, significantly suppresses investigating behaviour of rats, whereas the stimulus which had not been subjected to conditioning exerts no marked effect on behaviour. The greatest suppression was observed in rats with "learned helplessness". This fact suggests that the degree of suppression of the behaviour in an open field in response to a danger signal, depends on the animal's previous experience in reacting to this signal.  相似文献

Abstract:  The predatory effect of female adults of Coccinella septempunctata L. (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on aphid Macrosiphum euphorbiae (Thomas) was examined under laboratory conditions, in controlled environmental chambers. This study took place on single rose leaves in transparent small plastic cages at varying proportions of predator/number of aphids. Coccinella septempunctata proved to be an effective predator for the biological control of M. euphorbiae under controlled conditions in closed environments. It is proposed to use starved adult females of C. septempunctata in biological control programmes in greenhouses, as a specialized predator of M. euphorbiae in proportions near 1 : 35 predator/aphids. The percentage of aphids that may escape was correlated to the hunger satiation of the predator and the total number of aphids, and the theoretical models describing the predator's behaviour under controlled conditions were defined.  相似文献

The horse chestnut leaf miner (HCLM) Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic (Lepidoptera, Gracillariidae) is a novel but significant pest in Europe. Current control measures are either inefficient or environmentally harmful. Tits (Parus spp.) open the mines and prey on HCLM, but the biocontrol efficiency of this behaviour has not yet been quantified. We installed bird nesting-boxes in a biennial field study on four sites close to Brunswick (Germany). On the same sites, we counted HCLM pupae, larvae, opened and closed mines, and parasitised larvae and pupae in leaves collected from horse chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum L., Hippocastanaceae) trees with and without bird exclusion. In both years, the HCLM number and the proportion of closed mines were higher in bird exclusion trees, particularly on sites with high abundance of tits. Hence, we suggest including the facilitation of birds, particularly tits, in future HCLM biocontrol strategies.  相似文献

We investigated the interaction between individual experience and social learning in domestic dogs,Canis familiaris . We conducted two experiments using detour tests, where an object or food was placed behind a transparent, V-shaped wire-mesh fence, such that the dogs could get the reward by going around the fence. In some groups, two open doors were offered as an alternative, easier way to reach the reward. In experiment 1 we opened the doors only in trial 1, then closed them for trials 2 and 3. In experiment 2 other dogs were first taught to detour the fence with closed doors after they had observed a detouring human demonstrator, then we opened the doors for three subsequent trials. In experiment 1 all dogs reached the reward by going through the doors in trial 1, but their detouring performance was poor after the doors had been closed, if they had to solve the task on their own. However, dogs in the experimental group that were allowed to watch a detouring human demonstrator after the doors had been closed showed improved detouring ability compared with those that did not receive a demonstration of detouring. In experiment 2 the dogs tended to keep on detouring along the fence even if the doors had been opened, giving up a chance to get behind the fence by a shorter route. These results show that dogs can use information gained by observing a human demonstrator to overcome their own mistakenly preferred solution in a problem situation. In a reversed situation social learning can also contribute to a preference for a less adaptive behaviour. However, only repeated individual and social experience leads to a durable manifestation of maladaptive behaviour. Background

Limited research exists exploring the influence of personality on adherence behaviour. Since non-adherence is a major obstacle in treating prevalent chronic diseases the aim was to determine whether personality traits are related to reported adherence to medication in individuals with chronic disease.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Individuals with chronic disease (n = 749) were identified in a random population sample of 5000 inhabitants aged 30–70 in two municipalities in West Sweden. Data on five personality traits, Neuroticism, Extraversion, Openness to experiences, Agreeableness, and Conscientiousness, and medication adherence behaviour was collected by questionnaires. Statistical analyses resulted in a negative relationship between Neuroticism and medication adherence (P<0.001), while both Agreeableness (P<0.001) and Conscientiousness (P<0.001) were positively related to adherence. At high levels of Conscientiousness, low adherence was related to higher scores in Neuroticism. At high levels of Agreeableness, low adherence was related to low scores in Conscientiousness and high scores in Openness to experiences.

Conclusions

This study demonstrated that multiple personality traits are of significant importance for adherence behaviour in individuals with chronic disease. The findings suggest that several personality traits may interact in influencing adherence behaviour. Personality traits could putatively be used to focus efforts to educate and support patients with high risk of low medical adherence.  相似文献

Objectives

In the current study, we aimed to investigate the impact of childhood trauma on suicidal behaviour phenotypes in a group of patients with diagnosed affective disorder (unipolar or bipolar affective disorder).

Patients and Methods

Patients with and without a history of childhood abuse, measured by Childhood Trauma Questionnaire (CTQ), were assessed to explore risks for suicidal behaviour (including suicide attempt, self-harm and non-suicidal self-injury). The tested sample consisted of 258 patients (111 males and 147 females, in-patients and out-patients at the Department of Psychiatry and Psychotherapy, Medical University of Vienna and University Hospital Tulln, Lower Austria). Psychiatric diagnoses were derived from the SCAN (Schedules for Clinical Assessment in Neuropsychiatry) interview. In addition, patients were administered the Lifetime Parasuicidal Count (LPC), Suicidal Behaviour Questionnaire (SBQ-R), and Viennese Suicide Risk Assessment Scale (VISURIAS) questionnaires.

Results

In contrast to male suicide attempters, female suicide attempters showed both significantly higher total CTQ scores (p<0.001), and higher CTQ subscores (emotional, physical and sexual abuse, as well as emotional and physical neglect) in comparison to the non-suicidal control group. Besides, females with a history of self-harming behaviour (including suicidal intention) and Non-Suicidal-Self Injury (NSSI) had significantly higher CTQ total scores (p<0.001) than the control group.

Conclusion

These findings suggest gender differences in suicidal behaviour after being exposed to childhood trauma.  相似文献

The aggressive behaviour of hybrids between an epigeous and a cave-dwelling form of the toothcarp Poecilia sphenops was investigated in order to test whether a genetically determined reduction of aggressive behaviour exists in the cave population. The scores for five different elements of this behaviour as well as for the duration of fights support this hypothesis and suggest that aggressive behaviour in Poecilia spbenops is controlled by a closely linked polygenic system. On the basis of laboratory and field investigations, to aggressive behaviour is attributed the function of giving large ♂♂ a reproductive advantage within the framework of a body-size dependent rank order. Small ♀♀ appear to counteract this onesided selective advantage through a special strategy of sexual behaviour.  相似文献

We investigated whether individual great tits, Parus major, vary consistently in their exploratory behaviour in a novel environment and measured the repeatability and heritability of this trait. Wild birds were caught in their natural habitat, tested in the laboratory in an open field test on the following morning, then released at the capture site. We measured individual consistency of exploratory behaviour for recaptured individuals (repeatability) and estimated the heritability with parent-offspring regressions and sibling analyses. Measures of exploratory behaviour of individuals at repeated captures were consistent in both sexes and study areas (repeatabilities ranged from 0.27 to 0.48). Exploration scores did not differ between the sexes, and were unrelated to age, condition at fledging or condition during measurement. Heritability estimates were 0.22-0.41 (parent-offspring regressions) and 0.37-0.40 (sibling analyses). We conclude that (1) consistent individual variation in open field behaviour exists in individuals from the wild, and (2) this behavioural variation is heritable. This is one of the first studies showing heritable variation in a behavioural trait in animals from the wild, and poses the question of how this variation is maintained under natural conditions. Egg yolk oil was formed from a hen’s egg without using the traditional charring method and organic solvents. By treating a spray-dried egg yolk suspension with a commercial crude enzyme preparation having protease and lipase activities, the lipids (egg yolk oil) could be easily separated, and a transparent solution of soluble polypeptides was obtained. When the enzyme preparation (4 mg) was added to a 5% spray-dried egg yolk (100 mg) suspension, the reaction mixture became transparent, and the egg yolk oil floated to the surface of the reaction mixture within 3 h. In the case of a 10% spray-dried egg yolk suspension, a transparent solution and egg yolk oil could be successfully obtained within 4 to 5 h by using a larger reaction vessel and a 0.2M lactate buffer. About 87% of the total polypeptides in the initial reaction mixture was recovered from the transparent solution, while about 83% of the total phospholipids was recovered from the floating egg yolk oil.  相似文献

Aggregation of suspended yeast cells in a small-scale ultrasonic standing wave field has been monitored and quantified. The aggregation effect is based on the acoustic radiation force, which concentrates the cells in clumps. The ultrasonic chamber employed (1.9 MHz, one wavelength pathlength) had a sonication volume of 60 l. The aggregation process was observed from above the transducer through a transparent glass reflector. A distinct, reproducible, pattern of clumps formed rapidly in the sound field. The sound pressure was estimated experimentally to be of the order of 1 MPa. Microscopic observations of the formation of a single clump were recorded onto a PC. The time dependent movement patterns and travelling velocities of the cells during the aggregation process were extracted by particle image velocimetry analysis. A time dependent change was seen in the particle motion pattern during approach to its completion of clump formation after 45 s. Streaming eddies were set-up during the first couple of seconds. The scale of the eddies was consistent with Rayleigh micro-streaming theory. An increase in the travelling velocity of the cells was observed after 30 s from initially about 400 m s–1 to about 1 mm s–1. The influence of a number of mechanisms on particle behaviour (e.g. micro-streaming, particle interactions and convective flow) is considered. The experimental set-up introduced here is a powerful tool for aggregation studies in ultrasonic standing waves and lays the foundation for future quantitative experiments on the individual contributions of the different mechanisms.  相似文献

Background

Research investigating cognition and behaviour in Sotos syndrome has been sporadic and to date, there is no published overview of study findings.

Method

A systematic review of all published literature (1964–2015) presenting empirical data on cognition and behaviour in Sotos syndrome. Thirty four journal articles met inclusion criteria. Within this literature, data relating to cognition and/or behaviour in 247 individuals with a diagnosis of Sotos syndrome were reported. Ten papers reported group data on cognition and/or behaviour. The remaining papers employed a case study design.

Results

Intelligence quotient (IQ) scores were reported in twenty five studies. Intellectual disability (IQ < 70) or borderline intellectual functioning (IQ 70–84) was present in the vast majority of individuals with Sotos syndrome. Seven studies reported performance on subscales of intelligence tests. Data from these studies indicate that verbal IQ scores are consistently higher than performance IQ scores. Fourteen papers provided data on behavioural features of individuals with Sotos syndrome. Key themes that emerged in the behavioural literature were overlap with ASD, ADHD, anxiety and high prevalence of aggression/tantrums.

Conclusion

Although a range of studies have provided insight into cognition and behaviour in Sotos syndrome, specific profiles have not yet been fully specified. Recommendations for future research are provided.  相似文献

The curriculum of our medical school has a hybrid structure including both traditional training (lectures) and problem-based learning (PBL) applications. The purpose of this study was to determine the learning styles of our medical students and investigate the relation of learning styles with each of satisfaction with different instruction methods and academic achievement in them. This study was carried out with the participation of 170 first-year medical students (the participation rate was 91.4%). The researchers prepared sociodemographic and satisfaction questionnaires to determine the characteristics of the participants and their satisfaction levels with traditional training and PBL. The Kolb learning styles inventory was used to explore the learning styles of the study group. The participants completed all forms at the end of the first year of medical education. Indicators of academic achievement were scores of five theoretical block exams and five PBL exams performed throughout the academic year of 2008-2009. The majority of the participants took part in the "diverging" (n = 84, 47.7%) and "assimilating" (n = 73, 41.5%) groups. Numbers of students in the "converging" and "accommodating" groups were 11 (6.3%) and 8 (4.5%), respectively. In all learning style groups, PBL satisfaction scores were significantly higher than those of traditional training. Exam scores for "PBL and traditional training" did not differ among the four learning styles. In logistic regression analysis, learning style (assimilating) predicted student satisfaction with traditional training and success in theoretical block exams. Nothing predicted PBL satisfaction and success. This is the first study conducted among medical students evaluating the relation of learning style with student satisfaction and academic achievement. More research with larger groups is needed to generalize our results. Some learning styles may relate to satisfaction with and achievement in some instruction methods.  相似文献

We propose a new method, based on machine learning techniques, for the analysis of a combination of continuous data from dataloggers and a sampling of contemporaneous behaviour observations. This data combination provides an opportunity for biologists to study behaviour at a previously unknown level of detail and accuracy; however, continuously recorded data are of little use unless the resulting large volumes of raw data can be reliably translated into actual behaviour. We address this problem by applying a Support Vector Machine and a Hidden-Markov Model that allows us to classify an animal''s behaviour using a small set of field observations to calibrate continuously recorded activity data. Such classified data can be applied quantitatively to the behaviour of animals over extended periods and at times during which observation is difficult or impossible. We demonstrate the usefulness of the method by applying it to data from six cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) in the Okavango Delta, Botswana. Cumulative activity data scores were recorded every five minutes by accelerometers embedded in GPS radio-collars for around one year on average. Direct behaviour sampling of each of the six cheetah were collected in the field for comparatively short periods. Using this approach we are able to classify each five minute activity score into a set of three key behaviour (feeding, mobile and stationary), creating a continuous behavioural sequence for the entire period for which the collars were deployed. Evaluation of our classifier with cross-validation shows the accuracy to be , but that the accuracy for individual classes is reduced with decreasing sample size of direct observations. We demonstrate how these processed data can be used to study behaviour identifying seasonal and gender differences in daily activity and feeding times. Results given here are unlike any that could be obtained using traditional approaches in both accuracy and detail.  相似文献

箱式法是广泛运用于内陆水体CO2和CH4通量监测的重要方法,但各研究中使用的箱体特征存在差异,箱体设计缺少统一标准,从而会影响观测结果。为明确箱体透光性、箱体内外气压差以及箱体内气体混合状态对水-气界面CO2和CH4通量观测的影响,本研究基于多通道闭路式动态箱观测系统,分别对比明箱和暗箱、箱体是否配备气压平衡阀及风扇对养殖塘水-气界面CO2和CH4通量观测的影响。结果表明: 夏季白天观测期间,与可观测CO2实际通量的明箱相比,当CO2呈现排放状态时,暗箱高估了90%的CO2通量;当CO2呈现吸收状态时,暗箱低估了50%的CO2通量。暗箱测得的CH4扩散通量比明箱低40%。箱体内气压是否与外界气压保持平衡对CO2和CH4通量影响均不显著。无风扇的箱体观测的CO2通量代表性较差,在本研究中较有风扇的箱体高20%。无风扇的箱体难以区分不同途径排放的CH4通量。在运用箱式法观测水-气界面CO2、CH4通量时,应使用透明箱体,并在其中安装风扇辅助气体混合。  相似文献
