Matching marine reserve design to reserve objectives 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Recent interest in using marine reserves for marine resource management and conservation has largely been driven by the hope that reserves might counteract declines in fish populations and protect the biodiversity of the seas. However, the creation of reserves has led to dissension from some interested groups, such as fishermen, who fear that reserves will do more harm than good. These perceived differences in the effect of marine reserves on various stakeholder interests has led to a contentious debate over their merit. We argue here that recent findings in marine ecology suggest that this debate is largely unnecessary, and that a single general design of a network of reserves of moderate size and variable spacing can meet the needs and goals of most stakeholders interested in marine resources. Given the high fecundity of most marine organisms and recent evidence for limited distance of larval dispersal, it is likely that reserves can both maintain their own biodiversity and service nearby non-reserve areas. In particular, spillover of larger organisms and dispersal of larvae to areas outside reserves can lead to reserves sustaining or even increasing local fisheries. Ultimately, the success of any reserve network requires attention to the uncertainty and variability in dispersal patterns of marine organisms, clear statements of goals by all stakeholder groups and proper evaluation of reserve performance. 相似文献

Brassica napus 《Plant Physiology and Biochemistry》1999,37(12):939
In western Canada, oilseed rape (Brassica napus L. var. oleifera cv. Westar) is seeded during the early months of spring, when ambient temperatures are well below the optimum. This can result in poor seedling emergence. The objectives of the present study were to determine which developmental stages are sensitive to low temperature and whether the effects are thermal or developmental in nature. Seed was germinated at 22, 10 and 6 °C. Fresh weight changes and seedling growth were assessed on the basis of equal accumulated heat units, and the mobilization of storage reserves was assessed by employing antibodies against isocitrate lyase (ICL; EC 4.1.3.1), oleosin and cruciferin. Additionally, de novo protein synthesis was determined by quantifying the incorporation of methionine via in vivo labelling. Low temperature resulted in poor germination and early seedling growth with phase II of germination being most sensitive. At 10 °C, there was a temporal delay in germination that did not affect the overall success of germination. This was a thermal effect as seed at the lower temperatures required the equivalent of 16–24 degree days before germination occurred. Also, seedling growth at 10 °C was lower in comparison to seedlings grown at 22 °C. Seed at 6 °C displayed slow and incomplete germination and poor seedling growth as a result of both thermal and developmental effects. 相似文献

Habitat loss and connectivity of reserve networks in probability approaches to reserve design 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Mar Cabeza 《Ecology letters》2003,6(7):665-672
Quantitative methods for the design of reserve networks often select over‐dispersed reserves, and consequently a number of species extinctions can be expected in such reserves, especially if unprotected surrounding habitat is lost. A novel approach that deals with this problem is presented by considering factors such as habitat quality and spatial configuration of reserves during the selection process. Species‐specific effects of habitat loss and fragmentation, together with habitat composition, are taken into account when computing species probabilities of local occurrence. Sites are then chosen to represent all species with a given target probability. The method is applied to a dataset of butterflies and moths from the Creuddyn Peninsula, North Wales, UK, which includes species with various responses to habitat quality and configuration. The results show that the resulting level of reserve clustering will depend on the number of species for which the spatial configuration plays an important role (at the scale under consideration), and on the pattern and amount of habitat loss that is expected to follow around the reserves. The method represents a step towards taking better into account species persistence when selecting reserve networks in a changing world. 相似文献

Low genetic diversity in a marine nature reserve: re-evaluating diversity criteria in reserve design
Little consideration has been given to the genetic composition of populations associated with marine reserves, as reserve designation is generally to protect specific species, communities or habitats. Nevertheless, it is important to conserve genetic diversity since it provides the raw material for the maintenance of species diversity over longer, evolutionary time-scales and may also confer the basis for adaptation to environmental change. Many current marine reserves are small in size and isolated to some degree (e.g. sea loughs and offshore islands). While such features enable easier management, they may have important implications for the genetic structure of protected populations, the ability of populations to recover from local catastrophes and the potential for marine reserves to act as sources of propagules for surrounding areas. Here, we present a case study demonstrating genetic differentiation, isolation, inbreeding and reduced genetic diversity in populations of the dogwhelk Nucella lapillus in Lough Hyne Marine Nature Reserve (an isolated sea lough in southern Ireland), compared with populations on the local adjacent open coast and populations in England, Wales and France. Our study demonstrates that this sea lough is isolated from open coast populations, and highlights that there may be long-term genetic consequences of selecting reserves on the basis of isolation and ease of protection. 相似文献

The ability of reserves to replenish fish stocks is relatively well documented, but the evidence of their ability to induce
positive effects on benthic communities remains inconclusive. Here, we test whether 10 years of reserve designation have translated
into positive effects on coral communities in Glover’s Reef, Belize. Surveys of 87 patch reefs inside and outside the reserve
revealed no clear indication of reserve implementation benefitting coral cover, coral colony size, or abundance of juvenile
corals. Furthermore, massive broadcasting coral species exhibited greater losses over time than their smaller-sized counterparts
across all sites, suggesting that local management actions have not alleviated the regional trend of high mortality for these
species. We detected no difference in herbivorous fish abundances or macroalgal cover between reserve and fished sites, providing
a potential explanation for the lack of cascading positive effects on the coral community. We conclude that patterns of regional
coral decline are evident at Glover’s Reef, including a shift in dominance from broadcasting species to brooding species and
declines in mean colony size. Our findings suggest that regional stressors are overwhelming local management efforts and that
additional strategies are required to improve local coral condition. 相似文献

Recent studies have identified sex differences in heart function that may affect the risk of developing heart failure. We hypothesized that there are fundamental differences in calcium (Ca) regulation in cardiac myocytes of males and premenopausal females. Isometric force transients (n = 45) were measured at various stimulation frequencies to define the force frequency responses (FFR) (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 Hz) during either changes in bath Ca ([Ca]o) (1.0, 1.75, 3.5, and 7.0 mM) or length-tension (20, 40, 60, 80, and 100% L(max)) in right ventricle trabeculae from normal male (MT) and premenopausal female (FT) cats. Force-Ca measurements were also obtained in chemically skinned trabeculae. Under basal conditions (0.5 Hz, 1.75 mM Ca, 80% L(max)) both MT and FT achieved similar developed forces (DF) (MT 11 +/- 1, FT = 10 +/- 1 mN/mm2). At low rates and lengths, there is no sex difference. At higher preloads and rates, there is a separation in DF in MT and FT. At basal [Ca]o both MT and FT exhibited positive FFR (2.0 Hz, 1.75 mM Ca: MT 38 +/- 3, FT 21 +/- 4 mN/mm2); however, at higher [Ca]o, MT achieved greater DF (2.0 Hz, 7.0 mM Ca: MT 40 +/- 3 and FT = 24 +/- 4 mN/mm2). We detected no sex difference in myofilament Ca sensitivity at a sarcomere length of 2.1 mum. However, rapid cooling contractures indicated greater sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR) Ca load in MT at higher frequencies. Despite virtually identical contractile performance under basal conditions, significant sex differences emerge under conditions of increased physiological stress. Given the lack of sex differences in myofilament Ca sensitivity, these studies suggest fundamental sex differences in cellular Ca regulation to achieve contractile reserve, with myocardium from males exhibiting higher SR Ca load. 相似文献

We develop a probabilistic approach to optimum reserve design based on the species-area relationship. Specifically, we focus on the distribution of areas among a set of reserves maximizing biodiversity. We begin by presenting analytic solutions for the neutral case in which all species have the same colonization probability. The optimum size distribution is determined by the local-to-regional species richness ratio k. There is a critical k(t) ratio defined by the number of reserves raised to the scaling exponent of the species-area relationship. Below k(t), a uniform area distribution across reserves maximizes biodiversity. Beyond k(t), biodiversity is maximized by allocating a certain area to one reserve and uniformly allocating the remaining area to the other reserves. We proceed by numerically exploring the robustness of our analytic results when departing from the neutral assumption of identical colonization probabilities across species. 相似文献

Marine reserve effects on fishery profit 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Some studies suggest that fishery yields can be higher with reserves than under conventional management. However, the economic performance of fisheries depends on economic profit, not fish yield. The predictions of higher yields with reserves rely on intensive fishing pressures between reserves; the exorbitant costs of harvesting low-density populations erode profits. We incorporated this effect into a bioeconomic model to evaluate the economic performance of reserve-based management. Our results indicate that reserves can still benefit fisheries, even those targeting species that are expensive to harvest. However, in contrast to studies focused on yield, only a moderate proportion of the coast in reserves (with moderate harvest pressures outside reserves) is required to maximize profit. Furthermore, reserve area and harvest intensity can be traded off with little impact on profits, allowing for management flexibility while still providing higher profit than attainable under conventional management. 相似文献
