Periodicity in Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. smolt migration   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Behavioural and physiological mechanisms postulated for the control of downstream migration of Atlantic salmon smolts are reviewed briefly, and some new evidence is presented for their refusal to undergo sustained swimming. Although these mechanisms imply passive displacement as the primary means of emigration, it is likely that active components must also exist as the rates of travel of smolts through loch systems are only slightly slower than those recorded for river systems. The timing of these movements within 24 h periods is reviewed and it is shown that the predominantly nocturnal emigration pattern is evident on occasions in alevin, fry and parr stages also. Thus at migration the diel periodicity probably represents a seasonal locomotor rhythm which, under changed behavioural and physiological circumstances, results in downstream displacement.  相似文献

Around 30% of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts successfully survived passage through Loch Meig, a reservoir in the north of Scotland, en route to the sea. However, this survival rate was in turn dependent on the timing of migration, with the earliest migrants in the spring having the best chance of survival. This could have implication for fisheries management, since the estimation of smolt downstream survival may be influenced by which time period of the smolt run is analysed.  相似文献

The anadromous life cycle of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar involves long migrations to novel environments and challenging physiological transformations when moving between salt-free and salt-rich waters. In this article, (1) environmental factors affecting the migration behaviour and survival of smolts and post-smolts during the river, estuarine and early marine phases, (2) how behavioural patterns are linked to survival and (3) how anthropogenic factors affect migration and survival are synthesized and reviewed based on published literature. The timing of the smolt migration is important in determining marine survival. The timing varies among rivers, most likely as a consequence of local adaptations, to ensure sea entry during optimal periods. Smolts and post-smolts swim actively and fast during migration, but in areas with strong currents, their own movements may be overridden by current-induced transport. Progression rates during the early marine migration vary between 0.4 and 3.0 body lengths s(-1) relative to the ground. Reported mortality is 0.3-7.0% (median 2.3) km(-1) during downriver migration, 0.6-36% (median 6.0) km(-1) in estuaries and 0.3-3.4% (median 1.4) km(-1) in coastal areas. Estuaries and river mouths are the sites of the highest mortalities, with predation being a common cause. The mortality rates varied more among studies in estuaries than in rivers and marine areas, which probably reflects the huge variation among estuaries in their characteristics. Behaviour and survival during migration may also be affected by pollution, fish farming, sea lice Lepeophtheirus salmonis, hydropower development and other anthropogenic activities that may be directly lethal, delay migration or have indirect effects by inhibiting migration. Total mortality reported during early marine migration (up to 5-230 km from the river mouths) in the studies available to date varies between 8 and 71%. Hence, the early marine migration is a life stage with high mortalities, due to both natural and human influences. Factors affecting mortality during the smolt and post-smolt stages contribute to determine the abundance of spawner returns. With many S. salar populations in decline, increased mortality at these stages may considerably contribute to limit S. salar production, and the consequences of human-induced mortality at this stage may be severe. Development of management actions to increase survival and fitness at the smolt and post-smolt stages is crucial to re-establish or conserve wild populations.  相似文献

The possibility of using intense sound as an acoustic barrier for downstream migrating smolt of the Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) was studied by observing, the reactions of smolt to 10 and 150 Hz sounds in a small river. At the observation site the river branched into a main course and a minor channel, the latter rejoining the main stream after 30 m. The sound sources were positioned at the lower end of the channel. The number of smolt re-entering the mam stream at the lower end of the channel was recorded during alternating periods with and without sound. Intense 150 Hz sound had no observable effects on the smolt, even at intensities 114 dB above the hearing threshold at this frequency. At intensities above 1.0. 10−2ms−2 the 10 Hz sound was an effective deterrent for the smolt, which turned and left the channel at the upstream branching point.  相似文献

Radio tagged wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar(n = 30) and sea trout Salmo trutta(n = 19) were simultaneously released from a sea pen outside the mouth of the River Lærdalselva and their migration to spawning areas was recorded. The distance from the river mouth to a position held at spawning ranged from 2 to 24 km and did not differ between the species (mean ± s .d . 15·9 ± 4·3 and 14·9 ± 5·2 km for Atlantic salmon and sea trout, respectively). The duration of the migration phase, however, was significantly shorter for Atlantic salmon than for sea trout (8–12 days, respectively). All Atlantic salmon migrated straight to an area near the spawning ground, whereas 50% of the sea trout had a stepwise progression with one or more periods with erratic movements before reaching the spawning area. After the migration phase, a distinct search phase with repeated movements up‐ and downstream at or close to the position held at spawning was identified for the majority of the fishes (75%, both species). This search phase was significantly shorter for Atlantic salmon than for sea trout (mean 13–31 days, respectively). Mean ± s .d . length of the river stretch used during the search phase was larger for sea trout (3·3 ± 2·5 km) than for Atlantic salmon (1·2 ± 0·9 km). A distinct holding phase, with no movements until spawning, was also observed in the majority of the Atlantic salmon (80%, mean duration 22 days) and sea trout (65%, mean duration 12 days). For both species, a weak, non‐significant trend was observed in the relationship between time spent on the migration phase, and time spent on the search (r2 = 0·43) and holding phase (r2 = 0·24). There was a highly significant decrease, however, in the duration of the holding phase with an increase in the time spent on the search phase (r2 = 0·67).  相似文献

Using tagged and recaptured Atlantic salmon Salmo salar (n = 106) the present analysis shows that the most commonly applied linear back-calculation method for estimating past length, the Dahl-Lea method, resulted in overestimation of the length of large smolts and underestimation of small smolts. A correction equation (y = 0.53x + 6.23) for estimating true smolt length (y) from lengths back-calculated from adult scale measures (x) to account for these systematic discrepancies is proposed.  相似文献

Expression of somatolactin (SL) mRNA was quantified during smoltification at 2 week intervals during January and February and weekly during March, April and May 2004 in a line-bred ranching stock of Atlantic salmon Salmo salar . Gene expression of SL (and a splice variant termed SL180) was lower in fish sampled in the later weeks of smoltification than in those at the beginning, a pattern opposite to that of gill Na+ K+-ATPase activity.  相似文献

Total brain mass and the volumes of five specific brain regions in diploid and triploid Atlantic salmon Salmo salar pre‐smolts were measured using digital images. There were no significant differences (P > 0·05) in total brain mass when corrected for fork length, or the volumes of the optic tecta or hypothalamus when corrected for brain mass, between diploids and triploids. There was a significant effect (P < 0·01) of ploidy on the volume of the olfactory bulb, with it being 9·0% larger in diploids compared with triploids. The cerebellum and telencephalon, however, were significantly larger, 17 and 8% respectively, in triploids compared with diploids. Sex had no significant effect (P > 0·05) on total brain mass or the volumes of any measured brain region. As the olfactory bulbs, cerebellum and telencephalon are implicated in a number of functions, including foraging ability, aggression and spatial cognition, these results may explain some of the behavioural differences previously reported between diploids and triploids.  相似文献

A microsatellite linkage map for Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar)   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
A linkage map of the Atlantic salmon is described here consisting of 15 linkage groups containing 50 microsatellite loci with a 14 additional unlinked markers (including three allozymes). The map shows the largest sex-specific recombination rate differences so far found in any vertebrate species (3.92:1 female:male). Homologies with previous linkage mapping studies of Atlantic salmon and rainbow trout are described. An in silico search of the Genbank database carried out using the microsatellites used in the mapping process identified significant matches between the flanking regions of the microsatellite SS11 and the calcium-binding mitochondrial carrier protein, 'Aralar1'.  相似文献

What little is known about the seaward migration of Salmo salar smolt migration through standing waters indicates that it is both slow and results in high mortality rates, compared with riverine migration. This may be partly because smolts in lakes need to swim more actively and require more complex directional cues than they do in rivers. In this telemetry study of smolt migration through Loch Lomond, S. salar smolts made repeated movements in directions away from the outflowing river, which considerably increased migration time.  相似文献

A lymphosarcoma that appeared to be of thymic origin and of lymphoblastic type was found in a 3.5-yr-old Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar). The fish was from a population of 60 broodfish maintained at a research fish laboratory. A large tumor mass was found under the left operculum. Small tumor nodules were found on the swim bladder and in the abdominal adipose tissue. The location of this neoplasm differed from those of previously described tumors in this fish species.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon Salmo salar L. parr and pre-smolts from 2 Norwegian hatcheries showed reduced weight gain, abnormal behaviour and signs of circulatory disturbances. Necropsy revealed conspicuous fat deposits around the heart to be the most consistent finding. Furthermore, the ventricle/atrium ratio was altered, with the size of the ventricle significantly smaller than normal in affected fish. Histology showed poor development or absence of the outer, compact myocardium, large numbers of fat cells and melanomacrophages in the epicardium, fibrosis, and inflammation of the compactum/spongiosum interphase. Nuclei of the inner spongious myocardium showed signs of compensatory hypertrophy. The cause(s) of this malformation is(are) unknown, but a high prevalence of other malformations in fish from the same population indicates high temperature during incubation of the eggs as a possible aetiology.  相似文献

Migration behaviour and estuarine mortality of cultivated Atlantic salmon Salmo salar smolts in a 16 km long estuary were studied using two methods: (1) acoustic telemetry and (2) group tagging in combination with trap nets. Progression rates of surviving individuals through the estuary were relatively slow using both methods [0·38 LT (total length) s?1 v. 0·25 LT s?1]. In 2012, the progression rate was slow from the river to the estuary (0·55 LT s?1) and the first part of the estuary (0·31 LT s?1), but increased thereafter (1·45–2·21 LT s?1). In 2013, the progression rate was fast from the river to the estuary (4·31 LT s?1) but was slower thereafter (0·18–0·91 LT s?1). Survival to the fjord was higher in 2012 (47%) compared to 2013 (6%). Fast moving individuals were more likely to migrate successfully through the estuary compared to slower moving individuals. Adult recapture of coded‐wire‐tagged S. salar was generally low (0·00–0·04%). Mortality hot spots were related to topographically distinct areas such as the river outlet (in 2012) or the sill separating the estuary and the fjord (in 2013). At the sill, an aggregation of cod Gadus morhua predating on cultivated smolts was identified. The results indicate that slow progression rates through the estuary decreases the likelihood of smolts being detected outside the estuary. The highly stochastic and site‐specific mortality patterns observed in this study highlight the complexity in extrapolating mortality patterns of single release groups to the entire smolt run of wild S. salar.  相似文献

Seasonal, diel and tidal rhythmic activity of hatchery-reared Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ) smolts migrating through a large estuary was studied by ultrasonic tracking of 46 individuals during two seasons. Prior to 10 May each year most smolts were inactive and remained near shore in shallow water. After 10 May nearly all smolts moved away from the release point into swift water and made rapid seaward progress. Initiation of migration each year occurred when river and hatchery water temperatures rose above 9°C. Migration in the estuary was largely passive drift, and as a result there were distinct tidal rhythms of ground ('swimming') speed and net seaward travel. There were no diel rhythms in ground speed or net seaward travel; smolts drifted seaward on the tides during both day and night. Smolts may be slightly deeper during day than night.  相似文献

This paper describes and evaluates a 50 mHz radio telemetry system for studying river movements of adult Atlantic salmon ( Salmo salar ). In fresh water for most applications radio telemetry is preferable to ultrasonic telemetry, because the receiving element (antenna) can be above water, and radio signals are scarcely affected by turbulent, weedy or ice-covered water. Within the range of 10–200 mHz higher frequencies are preferred, since the efficient antenna size is inversely proportional to frequency, and attenuation of signals is independent of frequency. Transmitters were cylindrical (6.5–9.6 cm long * 1.9 cm diam) with a 0.5 wavelength antenna trailing from one end. Each emitted pulsed signals on one of 20 crystal-controlled channels between 49.100 and 49.385 mHz. Transmitters were placed in the stomachs of salmon and the antenna trailed out the last gill slit. Receivers were portable 20-channel manual or automatic scan models, and antennas were 48 cm diam capacitor tuned loops. Some salmon regurgitated transmitters. Two salmon were recaptured and showed no ill effects from carrying transmitters for 32 and 42 days. Pulse rate had little effect on known transmitter life under natural conditions. Known tag life was variable, but averaged 70 days for transmitters with 1000 mah batteries. The range of transmission of transmitters to a receiving system in an airplane at 410 m altitude was about 10 km, and to a boat about 1 km. Range to a land vehicle was variable depending on obstructions. From the airplane transmitters can be located within a radius of about 50 m.  相似文献

Summary The gonadotropin-producing cells (GTH-cells) in the Atlantic salmon were studied light and electron microscopically before, during and after spawning, and after injections of luteinizing hormone-releasing hormone (LH-RH). The double immunofluorescent technique was applied using rabbit anti-carp GTH as the first antibody. Numerous immunofluorescent cells were observed throughout the pars distalis, but very few in the pars intermedia. These cells are basophilic and PAS-positive, and ultrastructurally classified as globular gonadotropes. Only one gonadotropic cell type could be identified; its size, morphology and fine structure vary considerably. In the same specimen the GTH-cells can be predominantly globular or vesicular in appearance, depending on the reproductive phase of the fish. At spawning and after LH-RH injection, many GTH-cells reach a vacuolar stage; the content of the vacuoles is not immunofluorescent. Another cell type, which resembles GTH-cells in semithin sections, did not show gonadotropic properties; its nature and functional significance are unknown. In addition, the present study revealed an increase in the synthetic and exocytotic activity of prolactin cells after LH-RH injections. It is suggested that LH-RH mediates this effect via LH and eventually via estradiol. The authors are indebted to Dr. N. Johansson and superintendent N. Electrophoretic variation of Atlantic salmon NADP-isocitrate dehydrogenase in liver extracts of material from Ireland is interpreted in terms of two loci, IDH-A and IDH-B , coding for cytoplasmically-located isozymes. The IDH-A locus is polymorphic with qIDH-A 1=0.18 and qIDH-A 2=0.82. This polymorphism is of potential value for investigating the population genetics of the two races of Atlantic salmon in Ireland. An additional, monomorphic band which appears in heart extracts may be a mitochondrial enzyme coded by a third locus.  相似文献

The major histocompatibility complex (Mhc) regions of mice, rats, and humans all contain a pair of related genes, TAP1 and TAP2, which encode members of a large superfamily of proteins of similar structure and function. A functional TAP1/TAP2 heterodimer is probably required for efficient presentation of antigens to CD8+ T cells. This heterodimer resides in the membrane of the endoplasmic reticulum, and transports peptides from the cytoplasm into the endoplasmic reticulum lumen for binding to Mhc class I molecules. The TAP transporter demonstrates specificity for both peptide sequence and length, and in rats, allelic variation in the sequence of the transporter molecules results in differential ability to transport particular peptides. Here we report two expressed Sasa-TAP2 loci, both of which are polymorphic, as well as an expressed Sasa-TAP1 locus from Atlantic salmon. The Sasa-TAP2A locus has a genomic organization similar to the human TAP2 equivalent. Received: 23 December 1996 / Revised: 26 February 1997  相似文献

The anadromous salmon life cycle includes two migratory events, downstream smolt migration and adult homing migration, during which they must navigate with high precision. During homing migration, olfactory cues are used for navigation in coastal and freshwater areas, and studies have suggested that the parr – smolt transformation has a sensitive period for imprinting. Accordingly, we hypothesized that there would be significant changes in gene expression in the olfactory epithelium specifically related to smoltification and sampled olfactory rosettes from hatchery‐reared upper growth modal juvenile Atlantic salmon at 3‐week intervals from January to June, using lower growth modal nonsmolting siblings as controls. A suite of olfactory receptors and receptor‐specific proteins involved in functional aspects of olfaction and peripheral odor memorization was analyzed by qPCR. Gene expression in juveniles was compared with mature adult salmon of the same genetic strain caught in the river Gudenaa. All mRNAs displayed significant variation over time in both modal groups. Furthermore, five receptor genes (olfc13.1, olfc15.1, sorb, ora2, and asor1) and four olfactory‐specific genes (soig, ependymin, gst, and omp2) were differentially regulated between modal groups, suggesting altered olfactory function during smoltification. Several genes were differentially regulated in mature salmon compared with juveniles, suggesting that homing and odor recollection involve a different set of genes than during imprinting. Thyroid hormone receptors thrα and thrβ mRNAs were elevated during smolting, suggesting increased sensitivity to thyroid hormones. Treatment of presmolts with triiodothyronine in vivo and ex vivo had, however, only subtle effects on the investigated olfactory targets, questioning the hypothesis that thyroid hormones directly regulate gene expression in the olfactory epithelium.  相似文献

In Atlantic salmon, Salmo salar, the mineral rate of vertebrae in a given fish varies according to the position of the vertebra along the rachidian axis. Indeed, the mean rate goes from 49% in the anterior vertebrae and raises to 51% in post-truncal vertebrae. Although no significant difference in the mineral rate was noticed between males and females either in the lower river basin or after spawning, the mineral rate of vertebral bone decreased significantly (1-2%) during spawning migration. Vertebrae, like scales, are an important reservoir of calcium from which fasting salmon draws the minerals and organic materials necessary for the substantial remodeling of cranial bones in males and for sexual maturation. We hypothesize that mineral decrease in vertebrae may be the result of a halastasic demineralization of the vertebral tissues.  相似文献
