Lice-infected sea trout populations were monitored using fish traps in the Romsdalsfjord (Norway). The reliability and efficiency of this capture technique, which allows estimation of lice infestation rates without killing the fish, was evaluated through a mark–recapture study. A total of 2447 sea trout smolts were captured, tagged and released over a three-year period. There was a considerable variation in capture rates (range: 0.4–17.7 fish per day) and sea lice numbers (number of lice per fish: 2.8–30.3; number of lice per gram body weight: 0.02–0.69) among localities, sampling times and years. Recapture rates of tagged fish with traps, which were low (2% or 0.11 fish per day), showed that the risk for pseudoreplication was minor, in terms of counting lice on the same fish several times. Most of the tagged sea trout (90%) were recaptured within the first two months after release, and no significant variations in lice numbers were found between tagging and recapture. The lack of differences in lice levels between tagging and recapture during the first week after tagging indicated that the method most likely would not significantly underestimate the lice infestations due to loss of lice during handling. Therefore, our results confirm that the use of fish traps is a suitable method for estimation of lice numbers on wild salmonids.  相似文献

The population of adult cisco in the Bothnian Bay consists of a number of spawning populations. Each one of these returns to the same inshore area for spawning every autumn. In the summer these populations are mixed and occur mainly offshore. These are the main conclusions of an experiment in which cisco were marked with Carlin-type tags. The cisco were caught mainly in fyke nets both in the summer and in the autumn and released after tagging in the area where they had been caught. Fish tagged in the autumn and recaptured in the autumn one or more years later showed a strong affinity to the point of release, while fish from the same group recaptured in the summer had migrated far from the release site. The distribution of cisco that were tagged in the summer and caught in the autumn showed no correlation with the release site.  相似文献

A study was performed to test the hypothesis that Atlantic cod Gadus morhua captured within fjords do not migrate across the sill into outer fjord segments or coastal waters. An 18 month long telemetry experiment, corroborated by recapture patterns, showed that 40% of the tagged fish crossed the sill. The majority of the fish that crossed the sill, however, returned after short excursions of only a few days. Many fish remained stationary at or near the release location, and migrations up the fjord into brackish water appeared more frequent than migration out of the fjord. The stable isotope analyses showed significant differences between the inner and the outer fjord segments, and this was seen for both adults and juveniles. This suggests that the Atlantic cod in the two areas have different diets and probably utilize different foraging ranges. Thus, both the isotope studies and the telemetry experiment suggest limited cross-sill migration and rather high site fidelity. Marketing restrictions only apply to fish caught in the fjord proper, not the comparatively clean outer fjord system beyond the sill. Based on this study of migratory tendencies, it is concluded that contamination levels in Atlantic cod in both the Frierfjord proper and the outer fjords probably result from local exposure and appear little affected by inter-fjord migration.  相似文献

Long-term retention of surgically implanted radio transmitters in pikeperch   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Radio-tagged pikeperch Stizostedion lucioperca (55–74 cm L T) were recaptured in a reservoir by anglers 52–55 months after tagging. A total of four fish were recaptured during the summer of 2001. These recaptures are remarkable because of the long period between tagging and recapture and because only one (of 15 potential) tagged pikeperch had been caught in the long period since tagging.  相似文献

Information on fish movement and growth is primarily obtained through the marking and tracking of individuals with external tags, which are usually affixed to anesthetized individuals at the surface. However, the quantity and quality of data obtained by this method is often limited by small sample sizes owing to the time associated with the tagging process, high rates of tagging‐related mortality, and displacement of tagged individuals from the initial capture location. To address these issues, we describe a technique for applying external streamer and dart tags in situ, which uses SCUBA divers to capture and tag individual fish on the sea floor without the use of anesthetic. We demonstrate this method for Indo‐Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans/P. miles), species which are particularly vulnerable to barotrauma when transported to and handled at the surface. To test our method, we tagged 161 individuals inhabiting 26 coral reef locations in the Bahamas over a period of 3 years. Our method resulted in no instances of barotrauma, reduced handling and recovery time, and minimal post‐tagging release displacement compared with conventional ex situ tag application. Opportunistic resighting and recapture of tagged individuals reveals that lionfish exhibit highly variable site fidelity, movement patterns, and growth rates on invaded coral reef habitats. In total, 24% of lionfish were resighted between 29 and 188 days after tagging. Of these, 90% were located at the site of capture, while the remaining individuals were resighted between 200 m and 1.1 km from initial site of capture over 29 days later. In situ growth rates ranged between 0.1 and 0.6 mm/day. While individuals tagged with streamer tags posted slower growth rates with increasing size, as expected, there was no relationship between growth rate and fish size for individuals marked with dart tags, potentially because of large effects of tag presence on the activities of small bodied lionfish (i.e., <150 mm), where the tag was up to 7.6% of the lionfish's mass. Our study offers a novel in situ tagging technique that can be used to provide critical information on fish site fidelity, movement patterns, and growth in cases where ex situ tagging is not feasible.  相似文献

The restoration of the Atlantic sturgeon Acipenser oxyrinchus in Lithuania started in 2011. Two rivers (Neris and ?ventoji) were chosen for reintroduction in the Nemunas river basin based on historical data and ecological conditions. Since 2011, more than 116 thousand of sturgeon juveniles have been stocked in Lithuania. In order to achieve successful population restoration, it is vital to evaluate the efficiency of performed artificial stocking. Analysis of post‐stocking survival, migration patterns, predation pressure, fisheries‐related mortality and possible aggregation zones are all important to understand the main threats and prepare possible mitigation measures necessary for population establishment during the initial phase of restoration. Therefore, conventional and radio tagging studies were performed during the initial restoration phase in Lithuania. Atlantic sturgeon downstream migration was divergent in summer and appeared to have no significant associations with fish size, river quality or hydrophysical parameters, but in autumn migration speed and even survival in small rivers seemed to depend on flow velocity and water discharge. The distribution of recaptured tagged juveniles coincided with dominant currents in the Curonian Lagoon and Baltic Sea. Some tagged specimens migrated long distances, with two sturgeons from Lithuania being caught in Estonian and Finnish territorial waters at up to 800 km from their release site. Tag recapture analysis and mortality rate of tagged fish clearly indicate that annual fisheries‐related mortality exceeds the required threshold of 5% for population establishment. High survival in rivers indicates that the main threat for a successful sturgeon reintroduction program is commercial fishing in the Curonian Lagoon and Baltic Sea coastal zone.  相似文献

In a mark–recapture study in 2006, migrating European Anguilla anguilla silver eels were caught, tagged and released in the Baltic Sea and recaptures in commercial pound nets examined for possible effects on migration of infection with the swimbladder parasite Anguillicola crassus . The overall recapture rate was 36%. The prevalence of infection was lowest at the northernmost sampling site. There were no significant differences between infected and uninfected A. anguilla in condition indices, body fat content and estimated migration speeds. Parasite infection intensity levels were significantly negatively correlated with times and distances covered between release and recapture, but did not correlate with migration speed. It appears that more heavily infected A. anguilla were relatively more vulnerable to recapture in pound nets. It is hypothesized that parasite-induced damage to the swimbladder inhibited vertical migrations and infected A. anguilla tended to migrate in shallower coastal waters, relatively close to the shore.  相似文献

Spawning site fidelity has long been documented for anadromous salmonids, and more recently in estuarine and marine fish. The level of fidelity has implications for population dynamics, conservation, and management. This study extended a previous examination of spawning ground fidelity for common snook, Centropomus undecimalis. We used seines to sample 28 km of Gulf of Mexico beaches, spawning grounds for snook, during spawning season (May through September) from 2007 through 2010. Of 3,304 snook tagged, 171 unique fish were recaptured a total of 186 times and, of those, 166 fish (97.08%) (181 recaptures = 97.31%) were recaptured on the same island where they were tagged. One hundred seven of the recaptures occurred in the same year they were tagged, and 79 occurred one or more years after they were tagged, indicating fidelity was expressed within and across years. Distance between tag and recapture locations within and among years demonstrated fidelity at a spatial scale much smaller than barrier island (mean distance between tag and recapture =1.59 ± 0.12 km; island lengths 6.8, 8.9 and 12.4 km). Furthermore, mapping of capture locations revealed clumped distribution of snook on spawning grounds, further suggesting snook propensity for specific locations. Fish size had no effect on fidelity. We conclude that common snook show a high level of spawning site fidelity in southwest Florida, which may result in spawning group segregation, may influence the response of snook to disturbances, and may have implications for adult-to-nursery ontogenetic connections.  相似文献

A mark‐recapture study was conducted in 1997–2005 to investigate movements of stocked pacu, Piaractus mesopotamicus, in the Paraná River Basin of Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina. Fish raised in cages within the Itaipu Reservoir and in ponds were tagged externally (n = 2976) and released in the Itaipu Reservoir (53.2%) and bays of its major tributaries (46.8%). In total, 367 fish (12.3%) were recaptured. In all, 91% of the pacu moved away from the release site; upstream movements were more extensive than downstream movements. Pacu traveled upstream a maximum of 422 km (average of 41.3 km) at a maximum rate of 26.4 km day−1 (av. 0.8). Downstream movements were limited in terms of number of individuals and distance moved. Fish released during the wet season moved farther than those released during the dry season, and feeding rather than spawning might have been the compelling reason for movement. Although fish passed downstream through dams, none of the marked fish were detected to have moved upstream through the passage facilities. Pacu showed movement patterns not radically different from those of other neotropical migratory species, but their migratory movements may not be as extensive as those of other large migratory species in the basin.  相似文献

Gobius paganellus, Lipophrys pholis and Coryphoblennius galerita are wide‐spread intertidal fish that spend their earlier life stages in rock pools, and yet very little is known about their site fidelity behaviour. For these species, fidelity to rockpools may result in increased fitness costs in a predicted scenario of warmer sea water, due to the low thermal inertia of these water bodies. In this context, it is relevant to investigate these species' site fidelity. We made a mark‐recapture study to assess the mentioned species' movements within and between rockpools. We tagged a total of 530 individuals of the aforementioned species with the Visible Implant Elastomer and tracked their movement for a 7‐month period. We found that site fidelity and specific rockpools conditions are important factors in distribution of intertidal blennies and gobies. We also examined the relations between rockpool volume, depth and site fidelity. We found that G. paganellus tends to remain in its original marking pool, with an average recapture rate of 20.5%, but showed no evidence of inter‐pool movement. Rockpool depth, however, proved to be important in the blennies' movements. Our findings are among the first to prove that a mark‐recapture method can be successfully used to track intertidal fish movements. In particular, we showed that G. paganellus presents site fidelity in intertidal rockpools during its early ontogeny for a period of two to three months.  相似文献

The recapture rate of Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) after river ascent was examined by the trapping and tagging of ascending spawners in the lower reaches of the Simojoki River, which flows into the northern Baltic Sea. In 1997 and 1998, altogether 825 Carlin‐tagged salmon were released to continue their upstream migration. Of these, 800 could be sexed and categorized as reared (91%) or wild (9%) salmon. In 1997, most of the ascending salmon were multi‐sea‐winter (MSW) fish, whereas in 1998 almost all were one‐sea‐winter (1SW) male grilse due to the late trapping season. About 10% of all tagged fish were recaptured, two‐thirds of which were caught in the river before their descent to the sea. There was no difference in the recapture rate between salmon of wild (8.5%) or reared (9.5%) origin, or between females (11.6%) and males (9.3%). Generalized linear models for data from 1997 showed that the recapture rate increased with length and age of females, but that the opposite was true for males. River fishing did not seem to remove proportionally more early ascending salmon than fish that ascended later.  相似文献

0-group plaice were caught in Red Wharf Bay, Anglesey, North Wales, tagged with coloured liquid latex, and released in the bay or, after transplantation, at a position on a sandbank 3–5 km offshore. The pattern of movement shown by recaptures of plaice caught and released at the same position in the bay was one of extremely restricted movement of less than 0–5 km over several months, with only a slight interchange of fish between the sides of the bay and the centre. These restricted movements contrasted sharply with relatively long distances travelled by fish displaced to an unusual depth and position offshore and to a position at the other side of the bay 3 km away. In the first case a high proportion returned rapidly to the usual depth preference inshore and in the second a recapture pattern significantly different from that of control fish was demonstrated. Both results indicated a return to a preferred or familiar situation.  相似文献

The efficacy and sub‐lethal consequences of single and double tagging European catfish Silurus glanis with Petersen disc and passive integrated transponder (PIT) tags were examined in short (laboratory) and longer‐term (field) experiments. Tag retention in the laboratory was 100%, with normal behaviour (i.e. feeding) in all fish returning within 36 h. In the field, 65 of 120 tagged S. glanis were recaptured from five small study ponds, with 85% retaining their PIT tags, though recapture rates and tagging efficacy were highly variable amongst locations. This is consistent with literature for other fishes, suggesting that tagging efficiency is variable across species and largely context dependent (fish length, tagging location, habitat).  相似文献

The numbers of adult trout in Loch Leven were estimated in April each year 1968–71 by tagging fish caught by seine net, and estimating the proportion of the total stock tagged from examination of the angling catch during June-August. The vulnerability of tagged fish before June and after August was higher than that of untagged fish. Tag losses, estimated by double marking, were 2.15 % over a whole angling season. The reporting rate of tag recaptures varied within and between years from 0.43 to 0.71. Differential mortality of tagged and untagged fish was unimportant, except in two subsidiary experiments when fish were tagged in June and August, when handling losses reached 2.7%. With adjustment for these measured errors, the stock of trout beginning their third or more years in the loch in April, fell from 126 665 in 1968 to 52 337 in 1971.  相似文献

The periodicity of otolith growth increments (opaque and translucent zones) from adult red snapper (Lutjanus campechanus) was examined through a mark and recapture study (2005–2010), and laboratory holding of hatchery reared red snapper over a 2 year period (2002–2004). Wild red snapper (n = 295) were caught hook-and-line, marked with anchor tags, injected with oxytetracycline dihydrate (OTC), and released in the Gulf of Mexico 15–40 km south of Dauphin Island, Alabama. Marked fish were recaptured up to 2.8 years after release (n = 35) and sagittal otoliths were dissected, sectioned and examined under white and blue-violet light. The number of opaque growth zones past the OTC mark was compared to time at liberty for each fish and supported an annual periodicity of growth increment formation. Also, most (87%) of the hatchery reared fish showed two opaque zones that supported an annual increment formation rate. However, an unusual timing of opaque zone formation was shown for mark-recaptured fish. Based on known timing of OTC marking, otoliths from mark-recapture fish showed opaque zone formation from late summer (August) to early winter (December). This fall formation of opaque zones is in contrast to previous studies and its timing may relate to the end of spawning for this species.  相似文献

One of the major challenges for understanding the ecological impact of escaped farmed Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) is predicting their dispersal patterns after an escape event. Here, we quantify the behaviour of escaped farmed salmon using a simulated-escape experiment within a Norwegian fjord system. Thirty-seven individuals were tagged with acoustic transmitters and their spatial distribution, horizontal movements and diving behaviour was monitored throughout the fjord and accompanying rivers using 29 acoustic receivers. A rapid movement away from the release site occurred. There was no movement into the rivers feeding the fjord and there was no preference for residence at the fish farms: nearly a third of the individuals had a final detection in the outer part of the fjord and no detections occurred from approximately 2 months after release. As it is unlikely that all fish died or remained undetected within the study area it is reasonable to assume that a substantial proportion of the fish moved out of the fjord system. If a recapture program is not implemented immediately after an escape event, we recommend spreading potential recapture efforts over a relatively large area.  相似文献

The results of the application of Schnabel (Chapman modification), Schumacher & Eschmeyer, Fisher & Ford, and Jolly capture-recapture techniques on the Barbus barbus (L.) population in four areas of the middle Severn are compared. The survival of tagged fish varied in different areas and fish released in some time periods were less vulnerable to recapture than fish released from other samples. It is suggested that the shoaling behaviour of Barbus barbus resulted in non-random mixing of marked fish. The average population size of Barbus barbus greater than 18 cm in length in each of the four sections for the total period of investigation gave population densities ranging from 0.024/m2 to 0.202/m2.  相似文献

A total of 12 adult European sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax were tagged with pop‐off satellite archival tags (PSAT) in Irish coastal waters and in offshore waters in the north‐east Celtic Sea between 2015 and 2016. Archived data were successfully recovered from five of the 12 tags deployed, three from fish released in inshore Irish waters and two from fish released offshore in the eastern Celtic Sea. All three fish tagged in inshore waters were found to undertake migrations into the open ocean coinciding with the spawning period. These fish also exhibited fidelity to inshore sites post‐migration, returning to the same general location (within c. 73 km, which is roughly the predicted mean accuracy of the method) of their original release site. Although the number of tracks obtained here was limited, some degree of aggregation between inshore and offshore tagged fish in the eastern Celtic Sea was noted during the expected spawning period suggesting PSATs can provide new information on specific spawning locations of European sea bass.  相似文献

Somatic growth rate data for wild sea turtles can provide insight into life‐stage durations, time to maturation, and total lifespan. When appropriately validated, the technique of skeletochronology allows prior growth rates of sea turtles to be calculated with considerably less time and labor than required by mark‐–recapture studies. We applied skeletochronology to 10 dead, stranded green turtles Chelonia mydas that had previously been measured, tagged, and injected with OTC (oxytetracycline) during mark–recapture studies in Hawaii for validating skeletochronological analysis. We tested the validity of back‐calculating carapace lengths (CLs) from diameters of LAGs (lines of arrested growth), which mark the outer boundaries of individual skeletal growth increments. This validation was achieved by comparing CLs estimated from measurements of the LAG proposed to have been deposited closest to the time of tagging to actual CLs measured at the time of tagging. Measureable OTC‐mark diameters in five turtles also allowed us to investigate the time of year when LAGs are deposited. We found no significant difference between CLs measured at tagging and those estimated through skeletochronology, which supports calculation of somatic growth rates by taking the difference between CLs estimated from successive LAG diameters in humerus bones for this species. Back‐calculated CLs associated with the OTC mark and growth mark deposited closest to tagging indicated that annual LAGs are deposited in the spring. The results of this validation study increase confidence in utilization of skeletochronology to rapidly obtain accurate age and growth data for green turtles.  相似文献

To examine the potential linkage between sex-biased growth and dispersal in demersal fish, we studied the movement distance and growth of tag-recaptured sablefish (Anoplopoma fimbria). Tagging was conducted by teams from Japan and the United States. From 1980 to 1984, 58,918 sablefish were captured by Japanese vessels and tagged with anchor tags, and between 1980 and 2007, 3319 sablefish were recaptured in the Bering Sea and northeastern Pacific. Of these 3319 fish, we analyzed data on 659 individuals for which we have reliable data on recapture location, sex and fork length at the time of release and recapture, and elapsed time longer than 10?days. Annual growth increments (mean±S.D.) were 2.5?±?6.5?cm (males) and 3.5?±?8.6?cm (females), and the movement distances (assumed to be straight) were 712?±?800?km (males) and 877?±?920?km (females). Females grew larger and moved longer distances than males. We calculated the growth increment deviation that accounted for the effects of elapsed time, curvilinear growth, and initial fork length at release using a von Bertalanffy growth model. The growth increment deviation increased significantly with the distance moved over elapsed time. In addition, the relationship between distance moved over elapsed time and the growth deviation differed significantly between sexes; females grew faster than males at a given movement distance. We suggest that female-biased dispersal is a factor generating female-biased growth in sablefish.  相似文献
