During ice-free periods, seston ranges from 10 to 600 and averages29.2 mg dry wt 1–1 in Lake Balaton, the largest shallowlake in Central Europe. Most (80–99%) of the seston consistsof 1–10 µm sized mineral particles. The abiosestoncauses permanent food limitation in the ingestion of the ediblephytoplankton (1–22 µm fraction) by Daphnia cucullataand D.galeata. The postembryonic development time of D.galeataincreases and its fecundity decreases with increasing abioseston.The fecundity and the mortality of D.galeata are balanced atan abioseston concentration of 20.0 mg dry wt 1–1.  相似文献

Evidence for extensive interspecific hybridization among speciesof the genus Daphnia has been accumulating on a global scale.Although there is evidence for limited gene flow between taxavia hybridization, many species still maintain discrete morphologicaland molecular characteristics. We studied temporal and spatialpatterns of sexual reproduction within the Daphnia galeata–hyalina–cucullatahybrid species complex in a lake (Plußsee), located innorthern Germany. Allozyme electrophoresis allowed us to trackseasonal changes in taxon composition as well as the quantificationof back-crosses. Sexually-reproducing animals (ephippial femalesand males) were mainly found in autumn. The simultaneous presenceof sexual morphs of D. galeata and D. galeata x hyalina withthe dominant D. hyalina taxa makes recent hybridization, aswell as back-crossing, plausible. Males and ephippial femalesof D. hyalina were not back-crossed as were the parthenogeneticfemales. The low number of sexual clones of the hybrid D. galeatax hyalina might reflect its reduced fertility, although thesefew clones were detected in high densities. Only hybrid-clonesthat had a back-cross genotype (towards D. hyalina) exhibitedephippial females and males. This indicates that male and ephippialfemale production within the Daphnia taxa is not random, whichmight increase the chance for the parental Daphnia species toremain distinct.  相似文献

Data on two co-existing Daphnia species, D.cucullata (G.O.Sars)and D.hyalina (Leydig), from three neighboring and interconnectedlakes in northern Poland, revealed an extremely confined rangeof population density fluctuations throughout summer in eachof the two species in each of the three lakes, with D.cucullatabeing an order of magnitude more abundant than D.hyalina (meanof 11.5 ind. l–1 for D.cucullata and 1.1 ind. l–1for D.hyalina with 95% confidence limits of ±2.5 and±0.5 ind. l–1, respectively), in spite of markedlychanging fecundity. There was no apparent phase of decline orincrease that could be related to the distinct phases of lowor high fecundity resulting from different food levels. Analysisof the gut contents of roach (Rutilus rutilus), the dominantplanktivore in the three lakes, revealed identical selectivityfor each of the two Daphnia species, suggesting that the lowerdensity of the D.hyalina population was compensated for by thegreater conspicuousness of individuals of this species. It isconcluded that the population density of these Daphnia speciesremains far below the carrying capacity of the habitat and doesnot depend on food levels. Food availability merely sets therate of population increase, while the actual population densityin the lakes studied reflects the species' vulnerability topredation by planktivorous fish.  相似文献

The effect of three different Scenedesmus food concentrations(0.04, 0.2 and 1 mg C l–1) on maternal investment wasstudied in two cladoceran species of similar size, Daphnia pulicariaand D.hyalina. It was observed that as food concentration decreased(between 1 and 0.2 mg C l–1), there was an increase insize, protein content, lipid content, carbon and mass of theegg, while, at the same time, the clutch size of the femalesbecame smaller. Such an increase in ‘per offspring investment’was reflected in an increase in body length, body carbon andbody mass of neonates as the food available for females decreased.However, in D.pulicaria this tendency was not maintained downat 0.04 mg C l–1 in which there was a decrease of theegg characteristics mentioned above. Although, there are notavailable all the egg and neonate parameters of D.hyalina at0.04 mg C l–1, the body length of the neonates was largerthan at 0.2 and 1 mg C l–1. These results show that, asfood diminishes, these two cladoceran species are able to respondby decreasing clutch size, but increasing the size of egg, therebyincreasing the probability of neonate survival. This tendencyis probably maintained until the food concentration is too lowand the females have to reduce the energy allocated for reproduction.  相似文献

In the stoichiometric study of phyto–zooplankton interactions,a controversy exists about how Daphnia species regulate theirfeeding rate when submitted to low-quality food (i.e. high dietarycarbon:phosphorus [C:P] ratio). In this study, we gathered dataover 3 years on in situ clearance rates of a Daphnia galeatapopulation, by conducting grazing experiments from April 1998to October 2000 in the Esch-sur-Sûre reservoir (Grand-Duchyof Luxembourg). Observed clearance rates (2.5–13.5 mLindividual–1 day–1, mean 7.0 mL individual–1day–1) were correlated with population and environmentalvariables. Feeding in predacious estuarine ciliates was investigated ina series of laboratory experiments using a new method of preylabeling which facilitates microscopic indentification of ingestedprey items. Ingestion rates of Mesodinium pulex, Euplotes vannusand E.woodruffi were estimated using the appearance, insidethe predator, of bacteriovorous ciliates (Metanophrys sp., Cyclidiumsp.and Pleuronema sp ) labeled with fluorescent microspheres. Preyremain motile and have presumably unaltered surface characteristics.Ingestion rates of log-growth phase predators increased withprey density. Mesodinium pulex ingested 0 15–0.32 cellsh–1 over a prey concentration of 60–2300 ml–1.Maximum ingestion rates of E. woodruffi and E. vannus were 4.5and 3.4 cells h–1 respectively, estimated at prey abundancesof 75 and 172 cells ml–1 respectively. Comparisons offeeding rates on prey of different sizes, and the effects ofstarvation, indicated that ingestion is likely limited by differentfactors in ‘raptorial’ (M pulex) and ‘filterfeeding’ (Euplotes spp.) predators.  相似文献

We previously showed that plasma membrane Ca2+-ATPase (PMCA) activity accounted for 25–30% of relaxation in bladder smooth muscle (8). Among the four PMCA isoforms only PMCA1 and PMCA4 are expressed in smooth muscle. To address the role of these isoforms, we measured cytosolic Ca2+ ([Ca2+]i) using fura-PE3 and simultaneously measured contractility in bladder smooth muscle from wild-type (WT), Pmca1+/–, Pmca4+/–, Pmca4–/–, and Pmca1+/–Pmca4–/– mice. There were no differences in basal [Ca2+]i values between bladder preparations. KCl (80 mM) elicited both larger forces (150–190%) and increases in [Ca2+]i (130–180%) in smooth muscle from Pmca1+/– and Pmca1+/–Pmca4–/– bladders than those in WT or Pmca4–/–. The responses to carbachol (CCh: 10 µM) were also greater in Pmca1+/– (120–150%) than in WT bladders. In contrast, the responses in Pmca4–/– and Pmca1+/–Pmca4–/– bladders to CCh were significantly smaller (40–50%) than WT. The rise in half-times of force and [Ca2+]i increases in response to KCl and CCh, and the concomitant half-times of their decrease upon washout of agonist were prolonged in Pmca4–/– (130–190%) and Pmca1+/–Pmca4–/– (120–250%) bladders, but not in Pmca1+/– bladders with respect to WT. Our evidence indicates distinct isoform functions with the PMCA1 isoform involved in overall Ca2+ clearance, while PMCA4 is essential for the [Ca2+]i increase and contractile response to the CCh receptor-mediated signal transduction pathway. Northern red oak (Quercus rubra L.) seedlings were grown for63 d in a complete nutrient solution (pH 3.8) containing oneof three concentrations of Al (0, 0.75 or 2-0 mol m–3)and either 10 or 250 mmol m–3 Ca. Of all solution variables,the In of (Al3+)/(Ca2+), the solution activities ratio, wasmost closely correlated with declines in shoot and root growth.Ln (Al3+)/(Ca2+) also most closely predicted leaf and root [Mg],[Al], and [Al]/[Ca]. These three variables in turn were closelyrelated to growth. Toxic levels of (Al3+) and (Al3+)/(Ca2+)in solution are compared to levels in forest soils. The contribution of HCO3to photosynthetic O2 evolutionin the seagrass Zostera muelleri Irmisch ex Aschers. increasedwith increasing salinity of the bathing seawater when the inorganiccarbon concentration was kept constant. K1/2 (seawater salts)for HCO3 -dependent photosynthesis was 66% of seawatersalinity. Both short- and long-term pretreatment at low salinitiesstimulated photosynthesis in full strength seawater. Twentyfour hours pre-incubation of seagrass plants in 3·0 molm–3 NaHCO3 resulted in increased photosynthesis at allsalinities, apparently due to stimulation of HCO3 use(K1/2 (seawater salts) = 26%). Vmax (HCO3) was not affectedby low salinity pretreatment. The kinetics of HCO3 stimulationby the major seawater cations was investigated. Ca2+ was themost effective cation with the highest Vmax (HCO3) andwith K1/2(Ca2+) = 14 mol m–3. Mg2+ was also very effectiveat less than 50 mol m–3 but higher concentrations wereinhibitory. This inhibition cannot be accounted for solely byprecipitation of MgCO3. Na+ and K+ were both capable of stimulatingHCO3 use. Stimulation was in two distinct parts. Up to500 mol m–3, both citrate and chloride salts gave similarresults (K1/2(Na+) 81 mol m–3, Vmax(HCO3) 0·26µmol O2 mg–1 chl min–1), but use of citratesalts above 500 mol m–2 caused a second stimulation ofHCO3 use (K1/2(Na+) 830 mol m–3, Vmax(HCO3)0·68 µmol O2 mg–1 chl min–1). Vmax(HCO3)for the second-phase Na+ or K+ stimulation was of the same orderas for Ca2+-stimulated HCO3 use. To further characterizesalt-dependent HCO3 use, the sensitivity of photosynthesisto Tris and TES buffers was investigated. The effects of Trisappear to be due to the action of Tris+ causing stimulationof HCO3 -dependent photosynthesis in the absence of salt,but inhibition of HCO3 use in saline media. TES has noeffect on photosynthesis. External carbonic anhydrase, althoughimplicated in salt-dependent HCO3 use in Z. muelleri,could not be detected in whole leaves. The abundance and biomass of the large heterotrophic dinoflagellateNoctiluca scintillans, together with the changes in its potentialprey items, were monitored in the Seto Inland Sea, Japan, duringsummer 1997 (17 July-11 August). Growth and grazing rates ofNscintillans fed natural plankton populations were also measuredeight and seven times, respectively, during the survey period.The abundance and biomass of N scintillans averaged over thewater column (19 m) were in the range 1–345 cells 1–1(temporalaverage = 93 cell1–1) and 0.1–49.6 µg C l–1(temporalaverage = 13.8 µg C l–1; three times higher thanthat of calanoid copepods during the same period). Noctilucascintillans populations followed the changes in phytoplankton:N.scintillans biomass was increasing during the period of diatomblooms and was at a plateau or decreasing during periods oflow chlorophyll a. The growth rates of N.scintillans (µ)were also consistent with the wax and wane of the N.scintillanspopulation: N.scintillans showed highest growth rates duringdiatom blooms. A simple relationship between µ and chlorophylla concentration was established, and the production of N.scintillanswas estimated using this relationship and the measured biomass.The estimated production averaged over the water column wasin the range >0.1–5.2 µg C l–1 day–1(temporalaverage = 1.4 µg C l–1 day–1; 64% of the productionof calanoid copepods during the same period). Diatom clearancerates by N.scintillans were in the range 0.10–0.35 mlcell–1 day–1, and the phytoplankton population clearanceby N.scintillans was >12% day–1. Thus, although thefeeding pressure of N.scintillans on phytoplankton standingstock was low, N.scintillans was an important member of themesozooplank-ton in terms of biomass and production in the SetoInland Sea during summer.  相似文献

Photosynthetic and photorespiratoryenzymes in widely divergent plant species with special referenceto the moss Ceratodon purpureus: Properties of ribulose bisphosphatecarboxylase/oxygenase, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and glycolateoxidase.—J. exp. Bot. 36: 1677–1684. Km(CO2) values and maximal velocities of ribulose bisphosphatecarboxylase/oxygenase (E.C. 4.1.1.39 [EC] ) were determined for sixplant species growing in the wild, consisting of a moss, a fernand four angiosperms. The maximum velocities of the RuBP carboxylasesvaried from 0.13 to 0.;62 µmol CO2 fixed min–1 mg–1soluble protein and the Km(CO2) values from 15 to 22 mmol m–3CO2. The highest Km(CO2) values found were for the moss, Ceratodonpurpureus, and the grass, Deschampsia flexuosa. These plantsalso had the highest ratios of the activities of RuBP carboxylaseto RuBP oxygenase. Glycolate oxidase (E.C. 1.1.3.1 [EC] ) activitieswere slightly lower in D.flexuosa, but not in C. purpureus,than for typical C3 species. Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase(E.C. 4.1.1.31 [EC] ) was not involved in the photosynthetic carboxylationby these two plants. However, another grass, Phragmites australis,was intermediate in PEP carboxylase activity between C3 andC4 plants The properties of RuBP carboxylase/oxygenase are discussedin relation to the activities of PEP carboxylase and glycolateoxidase and to the internal CO2 concentration. Trophic Dynamics and Niches of Salt Marsh Foraminifera   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Energetic considerations of the growth of three species of littoralbenthic foraminifera, Allogromia laticollaris, Rosalina leei,and Spiroloculina hyalina, have been made on laboratory-grownpopulations. Under optimum laboratory conditions A. laticollarishas the greatest intrinsic rate of increase (r = 2.533 org/day);S. hyalina (r = 1.472 org/day), and R. leei (r = 0.272 org/day)being less fecund. The respiration rates of the three specieswere similar (0.5–4.5 µ1/mg body wt/hr) within thetemperature range (15–35 C) tested. The species studiedare selective feeders. Only 4-5 of 28 species of algae testedwere consumed in significant quantities (40-150 x 108 g/foram/day).Although great numbers of bacteria were eaten, their biomasswas negligible when compared to the algae. The ecological growthefficiency (Ee) of the three species tested is highest in freshcultures (5-20%) and declines rapidly. Evidence suggests thatthe species studied are well adapted for the rapid changes inthe microbial community structure which take place throughoutthe summer, and that community stability and high rate of productivityare achieved through diversity.  相似文献

The Ca2+ affinity andpermeation of the epithelial Ca2+ channel (ECaC1) wereinvestigated after expression in Xenopus oocytes. ECaC1displayed anomalous mole-fraction effects. Extracellular Ca2+ and Mg2+ reversibly inhibited ECaC1 wholecell Li+ currents: IC50 = 2.2 ± 0.4 µM (n = 9) and 235 ± 35 µM (n = 10), respectively. These values compare well with theCa2+ affinity of the L-type voltage-gated Ca2+(CaV1.2) channel measured under the same conditions,suggesting that high-affinity Ca2+ binding is awell-conserved feature of epithelial and voltage-gated Ca2+channels. Neutralization of D550 and E535 in the pore region had nosignificant effect on Ca2+ and Mg2+ affinities.In contrast, neutralization of D542 significantly decreasedCa2+ affinity (IC50 = 1.1 ± 0.2 mM,n = 6) and Mg2+ affinity(IC50 > 25 ± 3 mM, n = 4).Despite a 1,000-fold decrease in Ca2+ affinity in D542N,Ca2+ permeation properties and theCa2+-to-Ba2+ conductance ratio remainedcomparable to values for wild-type ECaC1. Together, our observationssuggest that D542 plays a critical role in Ca2+ affinitybut not in Ca2+ permeation in ECaC1.

Biomass, net primary production and energy fixation in an agesequence of Himalayan alder (Alnus nepalensis D. Don) plantationswere estimated in the Kalimpong forest division of the easternHimalayas. Biomass in the plantations ranged from 106 t ha–1(7-year stand) to 606 t ha–1 (56-year stand) demonstratingthe potential of the alder for accumulating large biomass. Netprimary production and net energy fixation rates of the plantationswere reduced by nearly half in the 7-year stand (25 t ha–1year–1; 421 x 106 kJ ha–1 year–1) comparedwith the 56-year stand (13 t ha–1 year–1; 215 x106 kJ ha–1 year–1). Compartmental models of energystorage and flow rates were developed for the 7-year and 56-yearstands. The production efficiency, energy conversion efficiencyand energy efficiency in N2 fixation have inverse relationshipswith plantation age. These efficiencies, when treated with eachother, showed significant exponential functions. Alnus nepalensis D. Plants of Phaseolus vulgaris L. (cv. Stella) were grown in controlledconditions under three different irradiances of visible lightwith or without UV-B (280–320nm) radiation. The biologicallyeffective UV-B radiation (UV-BBE) was 6.17 kJ m–2 d–1,and simulated a c. 5% decrease in stratospheric ozone at 55.7?N,13.4?E. The photon flux densities of the photosyntheticallyactive radiation (PAR, 400–700 nm) were either 700 µmolm–2–1 (HL), 500, µmol m–2 s–1(ML) or 230 µmol m–2 s–1 PAR (LL). Under highlight (HL) conditions plus UV-B radiation, bean plants appearedmost resistant to the enhanced levels of UV-B radiation, andresponded only by increasing leaf thickness by c. 18%. A smallincrease in UV screening pigments was also observed. Both thelower irradiances (ML and LL) increased the sensitivity of theplants to UV-B radiation. Changes in leaf structure were alsoobserved. Photosystem II was inhibited under ML and LL togetherwith UV-B radiation, as determined by Chi fluorescence inductionand calculation of the fluorescence half-rise times. Leaf reflectivitymeasurements showed that the amount of PAR able to penetrateleaves of UV-B treated plants was reduced, and that a possiblecorrelation may exist between the reduced PAR levels, loss ofChi and lowered photosynthetic activity, especially for LL +UV-Bgrown plants, where surface reflection from leaves was highest.Changes in leaf chlorophyll content were mostly confined toplants grown under LL + UV-B, where a decrease of c. 20% wasfound. With regard to protective pigments (the carotenoids andUV screening pigments) plants subjected to different visiblelight conditions responded differently. Among the growth parametersmeasured, there was a substantial decrease in leaf area, particularlyunder LL + UV-B (c. 47% relative to controls), where leaf dryweight was also reduced by c. 25%. The ingestion of autotrophic and heterotrophic nanoplanktonby two estuarine copepods, Eurytenora affinis and Acarith bifilosa,was measured in various environmental conditions using the incubationmethod and epifluorescence microscopy. Egg production of thespecies was also deter mined in order to estimate their carbonrequirements. Assuming a gross efficiency of egg productionof 0.3, nanoplanktonic carbon ingested always met the carbonrequirements suggesting that, most of the time, other carbonsources could be unnecessaly. Nanoplankton ingestion by A.bifilosa(from 128 to 1693 cells ind.–1 h–1) was dominatedby autotrophic forms (60–97%) and was seriously affectedby high (>100 mg l–1 suspended particulate matter (SPM)concentrations. Nanoplankton ingestion by E.affinis (from 300to 1049 cells ind–1 h–1) was relatively stable incomparison, but this latter species seemed to switch its grazingpressure from autotrophic to heterotrophic forms when SPM concentrationsincreased. Thus, two copepod species, living in the same estuary,presented two different feeding behaviours, probably to maximizeenergy input per unit of energy expenditure. Such differencescould contribute to the spatial and seasonal segregation ofthese species which is usually observed.   相似文献

Decoated seeds of Clitoria ternatea L. germinated on Murashigeand Skoog (Physiologia Plantarum 1962, 15, 473–97) basalmedium (BM) and differentiated callus and bipolar embryoids(two-step method) in low frequency. Calluses developed on lateralroots [BM+KN(0.1 mg 1–1)], on roots and hypocotyls [BM+KN(0.5mg 1–1)], and on roots [BM+KN+IAA (0.5 mg 1–1 ofeach)]. On basal medium with KN (0.5 mg 1–1) and withKN+IAA (0.5 mg1–1 of each), multiple shoot buds and embryoids(one-step method) were differentiated directly on split hypocotylsand roots. In the former, shoot buds developed even on unsplithypocotyls. Rhizogenesis on isolated shoot buds occurred efficientlyin BM+indole butyric acid (IBA 0.1 mg 1–1) and BM+IAA(0.1 mg 1–1 and 0.5 mg 1–1). Profuse direct embryoidsand shoot buds developing on root systems are interesting morphogeneticphenomena rarely reported. Rotifers are a relatively well-studied component of lacustrinesystems but their role is only poorly understood in estuaries.Three species of the genus Synchaeta—S. baltica, S. triophthalmaand S.cecilia—dominate the cold-water assemblage of rotifersin Chesapeake Bay. Laboratory experiments were conducted todetermine the temperature dependence of egg development time(EDT) for each species; EDT varied over an approximate rangeof 90–9 h as temperature (T) varied from 2 to 22°C.The EDT/temperature relationships could be closely fitted bya simple polynomial equation of the form log(EDT) = a + b(logT) + c(log T)2 for each species. Natural populations of thesethree rotifers were sampled during a cruise in the Potomac River(7–11 March 1983). Estimates of specific reproductiverates (b) were calculated based on the previously defined EDT/temperaturerelationship and the observed ratio of eggs/rotifers for eachspecies. The two most abundant species, S.triophthalma and S.cecilia,showed a clear dependence of b on the observed chlorophyll aconcentrations. Maximum reproductive rates ({small tilde}0.015h–1) were attained only at relatively high phytoplanktondensities within a bloom of Heterocapsa triquetra where thechlorophyll a concentrations exceeded 10 µg l–1.Estimates of secondary production suggest that Synchaeta spp.may contribute to the trophic flow of carbon in this systemwith a significance at least similar to that of the planktoniccopepods.  相似文献

The response of phytoplankton to variations in the light regimewas studied during the VULCAN and ACDA cruises in the Antarctic.Unenriched batch cultures of 12–19 days' duration reachedchl concentrations of 10–50 µg–1 and exhibitedexponential growth rates, with the maximal rate being 0.41 doubl,day–1. Ice edge algae exhibited maximum growth rates atphoton flux densities (PFD) of 30–100 µE m–2S–1and the growth rate was reduced by about 30% at 500–1000µE m–2S–1 The chl/C ratio ranged between 0.004and 0.018, with the lowest ratios at PFDs above 500 µEm–2S–1 chl/C ratios were also below maximum at PFDsbelow 40–50 µE m–2S–1 The C:N:P ratioswere close to the Redfield ratios; the Si/C ratio averaged 0.16(atoms), and the ATP/C ratio averaged from 0.0024 to 0.0050in different culture senes. When thawed after having been frozenfor 10 days, shade-adapted cultures were in a much better conditionthan sun-adapted ones. P versus I data showed that the maximumassimilation number varied from 0.75 to 4.4 µg C (µgchl)–1h–1. It varied inversely with the chl/C ratio;therefore the maximum carbon turnover rate varied little betweensamples (0.024/0.035 h–1). Low biomass communities exhibitedrelatively high values for (the initial slope of P versus Icurves), low values for 1sat (160–330 µE m–2S–1),and they were susceptible to photoinhibition. In contrast, communitiesdominated by Odontella weissflogii exhibited low values for, a high value for Isat (560 µE m–2S–1 andthey tolerated high PFDs. With respect to intravarietal variability, the petals of 15rose (Rosa x hybrida) varieties, representative of the colourrange expressed by modern roses primarily pigmented with anthocyanins,were investigated from chemical and. colorimetric viewpoints.Depending on the variety, the observed colour variations werebased on a more or less complex mixture of cyanidin 3,5-diglucoside,pelargonidin 3,5-diglucoside, quercetin and kaempferol glycosides.The total anthocyanin content ranged from 4 to 109 mg g–1petal dry wt., while the total amount of flavonol glycosideswas never less than 8 mg g–1 and could reach 136 mg g–1petal dry wt. Between cultivars, the pH of the petal outer epidermisvaried from 3·6 to 5·4 units. Using a spectrocolorimeter,the petal colour of each variety was measured. In order to allowquantitative comparisons of colours, the reflectance curveswere further translated into indices calculated using the CIELabsystem. In the aggregate, there were good correlations betweenchemical parameters and colorimetric indices that are lightness(L*), chroma (C*) and hue angle (h). Both of these criteria(chemical and colorimetric) appeared sufficient to explain thevisual sense of the petal colour. Key words: Rose, colour, flavonoid, colorimetry, CIELab system  相似文献
