In Gonarezhou National Park, southeast Zimbabwe Rhodesia, White-headed vultures laid their egg in a nest of Lappet-faced vultures in June 1978. Lappet-faced vultures then incubated the egg and reared the nestling successfully to fledging. The chick's feathers however had "fault bars", and during seven days of observation it received less than one visit per day by its foster parents. In the same area in 1973 a White-headed vulture was found incubating its egg in a Lappet-faced vulture style nest. The sizes of these eggs (811 times 650 mm and 79–9 times 65–8 mm) and their estimated dates of laying (24 June 1973 and 21 June 1978) were almost identical, suggesting that the same pair of White-headed vultures was involved. 相似文献

Lappet-faced Vultures Torgos tracheliotus utilizing a 2200-km2, fenced, protected area in western Saudi Arabia were studied over 4 years. Numbers fluctuated seasonally from minima of c. 30 individuals in the spring to maxima of 160 birds in the autumn. All birds foraged predominantly on domestic livestock carrion outside the Reserve. In each year, up to 17 pairs attempted to breed, with 81% of pairs laying eggs, typically in large Maerua crassifolia trees. In all, 81% of the eggs hatched and 85% of nestlings fledged. Most eggs were laid in December, when mean daily air temperatures were lowest, and young usually fledged c. 180 days later. Overall, 56% of nesting attempts fledged young. Juvenile mortality over the first 3 months after fledging was at least 17%. The numbers and proportion of breeders appeared to be stable, but it is not known whether the establishment of the Reserve concentrated the nesting and roosting of vultures in the area or has attracted birds from elsewhere. Breeding success was higher than in most well-studied African populations and probably those nesting elsewhere in Arabia. Four pairs reared 52% of the fledglings observed in the Reserve over 4 years. The Saudi Arabian Lappet-faced Vultures probably belong to the subspecies negevensis and, because of the extinction of this subspecies in the wild in Israel, the well-being of the Saudi Arabian population is critical to the subspecies' conservation. 相似文献

Ostrich breeding behaviour in the Serengeti ecosystem, Tanzania was investigated for differences in laying dates between low altitude western area (WA) and high altitude eastern area (EA) populations. Ostriches in WA laid eggs significantly earlier than in EA. The differences could be attributed to topography and rainfall pattern. Reliable rains in lower altitudes ensure availability of food that in turn influences the whole process of the reproductive cycle. Clutches were contributed by several females with a nest having up to 38 eggs. We also compared the frequency of observation of predators, ostriches, nests, 'singletons' (single eggs laid randomly) and broods between the two areas. There was no significant difference between WA and EA in 1) ostrich/nest ratio, indicating similar breeding densities; 2) ostrich/predator and predator/nest ratios, indicating that predation pressure was equally high; 3) nest/singleton and predator/singleton ratios, indicating that loss of nests did not vary between areas. However, there were significantly more predators, nests and ostriches compared to broods in EA than in WA, indicating a significantly lower reproductive success in EA. Using metapopulation terminology, ostriches in EA could be regarded as a 'sink' population and those in WA as a 'source' population, but investigations over longer time-periods are needed to further resolve if this is the case. 相似文献

Monthly changes in abundance of Thomson's gazelles at 142 locations on the Serengeti Plains are presented over a 3½ year period. Numbers of gazelles on the eastern plains were strongly correlated with rainfall, whereas numbers in the central and western plains appeared to be related to other variables. Movements of female cheetahs and non-resident male cheetahs corresponded closely to the movements of Thomson's gazelles but those of resident male cheetahs remained relatively independent of the gazelle migration. 相似文献

The kori bustard (Ardeotis kori struthiunculus) is indigenous to grasslands and lightly wooded savannahs of southern and eastern Africa. The species is categorized as near threatened in its entire range due to anthropogenic factors and low reproductive rates. The aim of this study was to analyse the impact of grass colour, grass height, season and location on the density/occurrence of this bird species in the Serengeti grass plains, Tanzania. Data were collected from January 2014 to June 2015 using transect counts in four seasons: (i) short dry, (ii) long rain, (iii) long dry and (iv) short rain seasons, respectively. The mean density of kori bustard in the grass plains was 0.25 ± 1.01 per 0.2 km2 with near‐significant differences among the study sites. The occurrence of kori bustard was high in the medium height (11–30 cm) during the long rain and short dry seasons. The kori bustard density is relatively low, and the distribution varies with grass height and season. We suggest that conservation efforts should be directed at preventing its local extinction by protecting the habitat from excessive human activities, such as livestock grazing and illegal offtake. 相似文献

The primary structures of the hemoglobin components Hb A and Hb D of White-Headed Vulture (Trigonoceps occipitalis) are presented. The globin chains were separated on CM-Cellulose in 8M urea buffer, the components by FPLC in phosphate buffers. The amino-acid sequences were established by automatic Edman degradation of the globin chains and of the tryptic peptides in liquid phase and gas-phase sequenators. The sequences differ from those of European Black Vulture by only one mutation in the alpha A-chains (alpha 137). The alpha D-chains and the beta-chains are identical. This means that for the first time identical minor components in birds have been found. An updated list of identical globin chains is presented. Hb D exhibited a higher oxygen affinity than Hb A. At pH 7.5 and 38 degrees C P50 values of 0.80 and 0.64 kPa (6.0 and 4.8 mm Hg), respectively. Both hemoglobins showed similar Bohr factors displayed a pronounced sensitivity to inositol hexakis(phosphate), which increased P50 values of Hbs A and D to 4.0 and 3.6 kPa (30 and 26 mm Hg), respectively. The molecular and physiological significance of the findings is discussed with special reference to oxygen transport by hemoglobin at high altitude. 相似文献

Abstract. Species abundance data from 32 representative stands are used to evaluate the vegetation in the heavily grazed Serengeti short grasslands. The abundant species are: Kyllinga nervosa, Sporobolus ioclados, S. kentro-phyllus and Eustachys paspaloides, all occurring in elevated areas, and Hypoestes forskalei, which is found in the drainage areas. Numerical classification and fuzzy set ordination revealed four main grassland communities associated with a topographic gradient. The communities are considered distinct since their niches, as computed in the community and environmental fuzzy system space are not overlapping. Leaching, erosion and animal disturbance effects correlated with the topographic gradient are found to determine species composition and overall community structure in the grasslands. 相似文献

In Serengeti fire is used as a management tool to improve the forage quality for large herbivores. However, little is known of the effects of fire on grazing resources particularly sward structure, its influence on herbivore forage patch selection and utilization to the relative amount of phytomass consumed in burnt and nonburnt patches. From September 2003 to July 2004, consumption of phytomass by large herbivores was assessed with eight samplings in six grassland sites in the Western Corridor in Serengeti National Park. Each site had burnt and nonburnt plots. Movable cages were used to exclude grazing between samplings and plant material harvests were used to assess phytomass and sward structure changes in time. Nonburnt grasslands had consistently larger phytomass at all sampling events whereas the ratio for live leaf/total phytomass was higher in burnt grassland at early postfire stages, but declined later in the season. Moreover, periodic consumption of both total phytomass and different phytomass components shifted between burnt and nonburnt grasslands, but there were also large site-specific responses. The shift appears to be related to the balance between the amount of phytomass available and the quality of the forage in terms of the ratio between live and total phytomass. The study highlights the significance of maintaining mosaics of burnt and nonburnt areas with an adequate provision of forage amount and quality all year round. 相似文献

Thirty nine years of rainfall data from 232 sites, 5 years of river discharge data from 3 rivers, 4 years of animal migration data and 4 years of water quality data at 60 sites were explored to quantify the role of water in the Serengeti ecosystem. Seasonal variations in rainfall are largely predictable; interannual fluctuations are huge and not predictable solely from the Southern Oscillation Index. The wildebeest and zebras start their annual migration at the end of the wet season well before surface water runs out, however these waters are very saline (salinity 5–17 psu). The timing of the migration appears predictable from a salinity model. Salinity is also important for the vegetation because high salinity coincides with the transition between wooded savanna and grassland. This transition has moved markedly southward in the last 30 years, this change may be due to decadal changes in annual rainfall. Most rivers are commonly ponded, with ponds having a flushing rate of 1 month in the wet season and zero flushing in the dry season. These ponds form the only source of water for wildlife for several months a year. The water quality varies spatially and temporally. pH values vary between 5.9 and 10 and are correlated with salinity. Surface waters are heavily eutrophicated from animal dung. As a result, the dissolved oxygen concentration near the surface fluctuates widely between 1 and 200% of saturation. Direct solar heating is restricted to the top few cm because of low visibility. A strong thermal stratification in temperature (2 °C/m) results and inhibits aeration. Bottom waters can be anoxic and are aerated only when hippopotamus stir the water. Poor water quality may affect wildlife health and production. 相似文献

Patterns of revegetation on natural and human-caused disturbances in grasslands and savannas of the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, were investigated by recording species compositions on all disturbances, in the undisturbed vegetation, and in unique microhabitats in 51 sites along a north-to-south transect through the park. The 487 resulting samples were ordinated by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and classified by two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN). Natural disturbances were, in most cases, ordinated near or classified together with the climax sample from the same site but human-caused disturbances were classified separately. Human disturbances from all regions of the park were classified together in one group, while natural disturbances were divided into communities associated with different rainfall regimes. Natural disturbances were revegetated by species growing in the surrounding undisturbed communities while human-caused disturbances were revegetated by a set of ruderal species not found in the undisturbed communities nor in natural disturbances.Plant nomenclature follows Clayton a.o. The high biodiversity of small mammal species in the Serengeti ecosystem provides this ecosystem with important conservation value. However, whether the extensive development of roads has negative impacts on the small mammal population has not been tested. Small mammal population diversity and abundance were examined in this study using live trapping at sites close to (experimental) and away (control) from the main gravel road during the short rainy seasons in November and December 2011 and 2012. A total of 138 individuals from three orders representing six families and fourteen species were collected over 4,860 trap nights. There were no significant differences in the species richness, diversity or abundance of small mammals between the control and experimental sites (p > 0.05), suggesting that the current gravel road does not have a significant impact on the small mammal population. These findings were ascribed to the availability of favourable habitats at both distances as a result of little road usage due to poor conditions. Should the road be improved, the control of anthropogenic activities in the area should be given high priority. Continuous monitoring of the small mammal populations in the area is recommended. 相似文献

Small-scale community gradients and patterns in four grassland communities in the Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, were analyzed by detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) and percentage distance ordination (PD). The main goals of the study were (1) to describe the vegetation patterns in the communities, (2) to identify the potential underlying causes of the patterns, and (3) to rank the communities by their relative levels of patchiness. Species cover in a small number (16–32) of discontinuous plots was estimated and soils were collected. DCA successfully identified community gradients and phases of discrete mosaics, and PD identified the relative heterogeneity of the sites. Results suggested that the two most arid sites were composed of weakly or strongly differentiated vegetational mosaics and the two most mesic sites were essentially homogeneous. Termite modification of water infiltration properties of the soils and clonal growth of dominant species were identified as two factors possibly causing the mosaic vegetation patterns. 相似文献

Lions (Panthera leo) and cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) from the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater Conservation Area, Tanzania were examined for the presence of blood protozoans. Twenty-eight percent of the lions were infected with Trypanosoma sp. and the prevalence of trypanosome infection varied significantly between adjacent habitats. All of the animals were infected with Hepatozoon sp. and a Theileria sp.-like piroplasm that was morphologically indistinguishable from Theileria felis. 相似文献

The forb communities of kopjes (rock outcrops) in the Simba, Maasai and Loliondo areas of the Serengeti National Park were examined to determine differences in species composition from surrounding grassland communities, and among sites within kopje and grassland communities. Species diversity measures and multivariate ordination techniques were used to examine the community similarity and species turnover between sites. All measures of forb species diversity were higher on the kopje sites with the exception of one grassland site, and the community composition significantly differed between these two habitat types, with more species and families exclusive to the kopje habitat. Species turnover was very high in grassland habitats, with two of the three areas (Simba and Loliondo) exhibiting a complete change in species composition. Kopjes, on the other hand, had remarkably similar forb communities, suggesting that the populations of the species present on these rock outcrops form patch structures. The distinct flora and higher diversity of kopje forbs raise interesting questions regarding distribution, dispersal and patch dynamics. 相似文献
