In order to reveal the influence of clothing skin pressure on digestion of food through the gastrointestinal tract, we examined the absorption of dietary carbohydrate and orocecal transit time of a test meal by means of a breath hydrogen test on 7 healthy young women. In this experiment, we collected breath samples from the participants wearing loose-fitting experimental garment on the second day of the experiment and from the same participants but wearing an additional tight-fitting girdle on the following day for 16 hours and 9 hours, respectively. Skin pressure applied by a girdle on participant's waist, abdomen and hip region was 15.5 +/- 0.4 mmHg (mean +/- SE), 11.0 +/- 0.2 mmHg, and 13.6 +/- 0.6 mmHg, respectively, and the values were 2-3 times larger than those of the experimental garment. The hydrogen concentration vs. time curve showed that breath hydrogen levels at its peaks (15:00, 15:30, 16:00, 16:30, and 17:00 hr) on the third day of the experiment were significantly higher than those of the corresponding time on the second day (p < 0.05 at 17:00 and 15:00, p < 0.01 at 15:00, 16:00 and 16:30). Consequently, significantly pronounced breath hydrogen excretion was observed under the "pressure" clothing condition (p < 0.01). On the other hand, the transit time of the test meal for the subjects wearing a girdle did not differ significantly from that for the subjects wearing the garment of less pressure (270 +/- 18 minutes and 263 +/- 21 minutes, respectively). These results indicate that the clothing skin pressure has an inhibitory effect on the absorption of dietary carbohydrate in the small intestine, but no effect on the orocecal transit time of a meal.  相似文献

The experiment investigated the effects of skin pressure by clothing on whole gut transit time and amount of feces. Comparisons of transit time and amount of feces were taken between 6 young female adults with and without a girdle. The skin pressure applied by a girdle (mean +/- SD) on participant's waist, abdomen and hip region was 16.6 +/- 7.80 mmHg, 17.1 +/- 4.5 mmHg and 12.6 +/- 5.0 mmHg, respectively. The difference of skin pressure with and without a girdle was about 10 mmHg. During each experimental period of 4 days with and without a girdle, the whole gut transit time and amount of feces were measured. The whole gut transit time of each day was determined as the time between the oral intake of each day's markers and their first appearance in the stool. The whole gut transit times of the markers taken on the first day were significantly prolonged (p < 0.05) and those of the markers taken on the second day tended to be prolonged for participant using a girdle (p < 0.1). The whole gut transit time of the markers taken on the third day could not be compared because they were not excreted into the stool. The cumulative increases of feces on the third day and the fourth day were significantly reduced with a girdle (p < 0.05). These results indicate that the skin pressure by clothing has an effect on whole gut transit time and the amount of feces.  相似文献

Effect of positive airway pressure on capillary transit time in rabbit lung   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We used fluorescence videomicroscopy to measure the passage of fluorescent dye through the subpleural microcirculation of the lung. With the rabbit in the left lateral decubitus position, the subpleural microcirculation was viewed either through a transparent parietal pleural window located in the superior part of the chest or directly with the chest open. There was no physical contact with the chest or lung. The rabbit was anesthetized, paralyzed, and mechanically ventilated with 100% O2. The dye was injected into the right ventricle during a 2-min apneic period to eliminate lung movement due to ventilation. The video signal of the passage of the dye was analyzed frame by frame by use of digital image processing to compensate for cardiogenic oscillations of the lung surface. Gray scale levels of an arteriole and adjacent venule were measured every 1/30 s. Capillary transit time was determined from the difference between the concentration-weighted mean time values of the arteriolar and venular dye dilution curves. We studied the effect of airway pressure (0-20 cmH2O) on transit time. Cardiac output was measured at different airway pressures by the thermal dilution technique. Capillary transit time averaged 0.60 s at functional residual capacity. Right ventricular-to-arteriolar transit time was four times as large as the capillary transit time. An increase in airway pressure from 0-5 to 20 cmH2O resulted in a fourfold increase in both capillary and arterial transit times and a threefold decrease in cardiac output.  相似文献

The present experiment investigated the effects of skin pressure by foundation garments (girdle and brassiere) on the circadian rhythms of core temperature and salivary melatonin. Ten healthy females (18-23 years) maintained regular sleep-wake cycles for a week prior to participation in the experiment. The experiments were performed from June to August 1999 using a bioclimatic chamber controlled at 26.5 degrees C +/- 0.2 degrees C and 62% +/- 3% RH. Ambient light intensity was controlled at 500 lux from 07:30 to 17:30, 100 lux from 17:30 to 19:30, 20 lux from 19:30 to 23:30; there was total darkness from 23:30 to 07:30. The experiment lasted for 58h over three nights. The participants arose at 07:30 on the first full day and retired at 23:30, adhering to a set schedule for 24h, but without wearing foundation garments. For the final 24h of the second full day, the subjects wore foundation garments. Rectal and leg skin temperatures were measured continuously throughout the experiment. Saliva and urine were collected every 4h for the analysis of melatonin and catecholamines, respectively. Skin pressure applied by the foundation garments was in the range 11-17 gf/cm2 at the regions of the abdomen, hip, chest, and back. The main results were as follows: (1) Rectal temperatures were significantly higher throughout the day and night when wearing foundation garments. (2) The nocturnal level of salivary melatonin measured at 03:30 was 115.2 +/- 40.4 pg/mL (mean +/- SEM, N = 10) without and 51.3 +/- 18.4 pg/mL (mean +/- SEM, N = 10) with foundation garments. (3) Mean urinary noradrenaline excretion was significantly lower throughout the day and night when wearing foundation garments (p < .05), but mean urinary adrenaline excretion was not different. The results suggest that skin pressure by clothing could markedly suppress the nocturnal elevation of salivary melatonin, resulting in an increase of rectal temperature.  相似文献

Using a hygrometric capsule method developed by the authors, water vapor pressure was measured at each layer of clothing as well as at the skin surface on a human subject under actual wearing conditions. The pattern of vapor pressure gradient from the skin surface through clothing to the external air was examined in relation to the ambient vapor pressure and ths sort of textiles worn. The following findings were obtained. 1) Water vapor pressure gradient was greater between coat and external air than that between coat and underwear. The gradient became steeper again between underwear and the skin. 2) Under given clothing conditions, vapor pressure at each layer of clothing as well as at the skin varied according to the ambient humidity. However, the pattern of vapor pressure gradient from the skin through clothing to the external air was not greatly influenced by the external humidity. 3) The pattern of vapor pressure gradient from the skin through clothing to the external air was not greatly influenced by the external humidity. 3) The pattern of vapor pressure gradient through the clothing as a whole differed according to the kinds of textiles used for coat and underwear.  相似文献

The influence of clothing on skin temperature distributions of the torso was investigated during and after cold exposure. Volunteers were cooled for one hour at 5 degrees C while wearing clothing designed to have insulation which was intended to be relatively uniformly distributed. Three different thicknesses of clothing were used. Following thermistor measurements of skin temperatures during the cold exposures, clothing was quickly removed from the upper parts of the body to enable thermographic investigations of the temperature distributions of the front of the bare torso. The evolution of temperature distributions were then studied at different ambient temperatures (5 degrees C and 20 degrees C) as a function of the thickness of the insulation which had previously been worn. The patterns of the temperature distributions, and the range and standard deviation of torso temperatures were all found to be relatively constant in spite of the different thicknesses of clothing worn or in the time-variant mean torso temperatures which resulted. The front torso sites normally used for the determination of mean skin temperatures were found to be on portions of the torso which were cooler than the surrounding regions. It was concluded that a site midway between the umbilicus and a nipple yields a more accurate estimate of mean torso temperature in the conditions of the present study.  相似文献

Pulse transit time (PTT) is a proven, simple to measure, marker of blood pressure (BP) that could potentially permit continuous, noninvasive, and cuff-less BP monitoring (after an initial calibration). However, pulse arrival time (PAT), which is equal to the sum of PTT and the pre-ejection period, is gaining popularity for BP tracking, because it is even simpler to measure. The aim of this study was to evaluate the hypothesis that PAT is an adequate surrogate for PTT as a marker of BP. PAT and PTT were estimated through the aorta using high-fidelity invasive arterial waveforms obtained from six dogs during wide BP changes induced by multiple interventions. These time delays and their reciprocals were evaluated in terms of their ability to predict diastolic, mean, and systolic BP (DBP, MBP, and SBP) per animal. The root mean squared error (RMSE) between the BP parameter predicted via the time delay and the measured BP parameter was specifically used as the evaluation metric. Taking the reciprocals of the time delays tended to reduce the RMSE values. The DBP, MBP, and SBP RMSE values for 1/PAT were 9.8 ± 5.2, 10.4 ± 5.6, and 11.9 ± 6.1 mmHg, whereas the corresponding values for 1/PTT were 5.3 ± 1.2, 4.8 ± 1.0, and 7.5 ± 2.2 mmHg (P < 0.05). Thus tracking BP via PAT was not only markedly worse than via PTT but also unable to meet the FDA BP error limits. In contrast to previous studies, our results quantitatively indicate that PAT is not an adequate surrogate for PTT in terms of detecting challenging BP changes.  相似文献

The study investigated how the pressure exerted on the skin by clothing worn while working in the daytime affected the urinary excretion of adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol, heart rate, and also melatonin secretion at night. Nine young women (experiment I) and seven young women (experiment II) participated. Participants wore either a 100% cotton jacket (tight clothes, TC) or a 100% cotton T-shirt (loose clothes, LC). Loose-fitting, 100% cotton tank tops and panties were worn as underwear in both the TC and the LC groups. The main results can be summarized as follows: (1) urinary excretion of adrenaline, noradrenaline and cortisol was facilitated, and the amounts of urinary excretion were significantly higher when TC were worn. Heart rate was significantly higher in the TC group; (2) nocturnal urinary melatonin excretion was significantly greater in the TC group. These results are discussed in terms of an enhancement of diurnal sympathetic nervous system activity caused by pressure on the skin produced by tight clothing.  相似文献

Duodenum electrical stimulation (DES) has been shown to delay gastric emptying and reduce food intake in dogs. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of DES on gastric emptying, small bowel transit and food intake in pigs, a large animal model of obesity. The study consisted of three experiments (gastric emptying, small bowel transit, and food intake) in pigs implanted with internal duodenal electrodes for DES and one or two duodenal cannulas for gastric emptying and small bowel transit. We found that (i) gastric emptying was dose-dependently delayed by DES of different stimulation parameters; (ii) small bowel transit was significantly accelerated with continuous DES in proximal intestine but not with intermittent DES; (iii) DES significantly reduced body weight gain with 100% duty cycle (DC), but not with DES with 40% DC. A marginal difference was noted in food intake among 100% DC session, 40% DC session, and control session. DES with long pulses energy-dependently inhibits gastric emptying in pigs. DES with appropriate parameters accelerates proximal small bowel transit in pigs. DES reduces body weight gain in obese pigs, and this therapeutic effect on obesity is mediated by inhibiting gastric emptying and food intake, and may also possibly by accelerating intestinal transit. DES may have a potential application to treat patients with obesity.  相似文献

Pulse transit time (PTT) is the duration in which a pulse wave travels between two arterial sites within the same cardiac cycle. The aim of our study is to use PTT to examine propofol's effects on the vascular system. Methods. We collected data from 50 healthy women, between 28 and 51 years old, who underwent gynaecological surgery under general anaesthesia. The general anaesthesia was induced with propofol injection (2 mg/kg). PTT measurements were obtained from the R-wave of electrocardiogram and the pulse wave of photoplethysmograph. Two PTT values were obtained; one before (the control) and the other after propofol injection. The results were analysed by Student's t-test. Results. After propofol injection, the PTT was prolonged. The change in the PTT value from that of baseline was significant statistically (P < 0.05, by Student's t-test). The PTT change over time correlated with the degree of vasodilatation over time. Monitoring of PTT not only revealed the magnitude of vascular changes but also demonstrated the onset of vascular dilation, its peak and duration. We conclude that PTT is a useful guide in monitoring the drug kinetics of propofol.  相似文献

We examined the effect of post-prandial body posture on orocecal transit time and absorption of milk lactose using the breath hydrogen test. In this experiment, subjects ingested a cup of commercially available milk to which we had added a small amount of lactosucrose (an indigestible trisaccharide), and then they lay on their backs or sat on a chair for the first 4 hr (from 08:00 to 12:00). After four hours lying or sitting, they remained sedentary on a sofa for the second six hr (from 12:00 to 18:00). Participants' end alveolar breath samples were collected every 15 min from 08:00 to 12:30, then every 30 min from 13:00 to 18:00. The experiment was conducted on two consecutive days using a randomized, crossover study design. Examination showed that the orocecal transit time of the oligosaccharides (lactosucrose and milk lactose) under the post-prandial supine condition was significantly longer than that under the sitting condition. In addition, the amount of breath hydrogen excretion under the supine condition was significantly lower than under the sitting condition, indicating that the unabsorbed milk lactose moved into cecum under the supine condition is smaller than that under the sitting condition. These findings provide evidence that postprandial supine posture works more beneficially to digest and absorb milk lactose when compared to the sitting posture.  相似文献

1. The acyl-CoA:cholesterol acyltransferase (ACAT) activity and lipid composition of intestinal microsomal membrane were investigated 6 weeks after both 50 and 75% distal small bowel resection (DSBR). 2. No changes in both microsomal ACAT activity and cholesteryl ester levels were found, while microsomal non-esterified cholesterol content was increased after the surgical operation. 3. The total phospholipid content of the microsomes did not change as a result of DSBR. 4. The microsomal phospholipid fatty acid composition showed a significant increase in saturated fatty acids together with no changes in both total monounsaturated and total polyunsaturated fatty acids after resection. 5. An increase in the levels of linoleic acid accompanied by a decrease in arachidonic acid was found in remnant intestine of resected rats.  相似文献
