In order to test the anti-interference hypothesis for adaptive significance of reciprocal herkogamy, patterns of illegitimate pollination and effects of self-pollen on the legitimate pollination and fertility were investigated in a naturally pollinated experimental population of distylous Persicaria japonica. Pollen deposition was compared among the emasculation treatments, i.e., emasculation of a single flower from individual inflorescences, emasculation of all the flowers of individual inflorescences, and no emasculation control. In both morphs, considerable illegitimate pollination was found to occur in all the treatments, and there was no significant difference in incompatible pollen load among the treatments. Therefore, it is suggested that herkogamy of P. japonica can sufficiently reduce both intraflower and intra-inflorescence self-pollinations, but not interinflorescence geitonogamous and-or interclonal illegitimate pollination. Measurements of pollen load after the repetitive pollen addition showed that space on the stigma surface may not limit the legitimate pollination under natural pollination conditions. Seed sets after legitimate pollination following prior self-pollination did not differ from the controls without self-pollination. Therefore, there is little possibility that incompatible pollen load interferes with either pollination or fertilization by compatible pollen, suggesting that anti-interference is unimportant for adaptive significance of reciprocal herkogamy at least in P. japonica. 相似文献

Within-population spatial variation in pollinator visitation rates, pollen limitation on seed set, and flower longevity in an alpine species 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Pollen limitation through insufficient pollen deposition on stigmas caused by too infrequent pollinator visitation may influence the reproductive outcome of plants. In this study we investigated how pollinator visitation rate, the degree of pollen limitation, and flower longevity varied spatially among three sites at different altitudes within a population of the dwarf shrub Dryas octopetala L. in alpine southern Norway. Significant pollen limitation on seed set only occurred at the mid-elevation site, while seed set at the other sites appeared to be mainly resource limited, thus indicating a spatial variation in pollen limitation. There was no association between the spatial variation in the extent of pollen limitation and pollinator visitation rate to flowers. However, pollinator visitation rates were related to flower longevity of Dryas; sites with low visitation rates had long-lived flowers and vice versa. Thus, our results suggest within-population spatial co-variation between pollinator visitation rates, pollen limitation, and a developmental response to these factors, flower longevity. 相似文献

Summary We conducted a controlled crossing experiment to examine the effects of maternal and paternal parentage, the size of the pollen load, and prior fruit production on the proportion of flowers that set fruit, seed number per fruit and seed weight in a natural population of Campanula americana. Effects due to the maternal parent were large for all measures of fruit and seed production, while the paternal parent had a significant effect only upon mean seed weight. As the number of prior fruits on the maternal plant increased the probability that a flower would produce a mature fruit, the number of seeds per fruit, and total seed weight per fruit all decreased. We found no effect of the size of the pollen loads used in this study on fruit or seed production. These results are consistent with those of other studies that suggest in natural plant populations maternal effects, especially environmental maternal effects, can have an overwhelming effect on fruit and seed production and on seed characteristics. 相似文献

Sorus formation on median and marginal parts of Laminaria japoncia Areschoug was investigated by cultivating sporophytes from December 1996 to September 1997 in Southern Hokkaido, Japan. Simultaneously, discs (ca. 3 cm in diameter) that were cut off monthly from median and marginal parts of the cultivated sporophytes were incubated in our laboratory. All the cultivated sporophytes formed sori on the median parts from January to August, while all the median and marginal discs formed sori at 10 under 46 μmol photon m-2s-1 (12L:12D) in enriched medium. There was no difference in sorus area between median and marginal discs. These results indicated that the marginal parts are able to produce sori, although the greater part of them are actually washed away before forming sori in the sea. The marginal part is probably in a state of `resource limitation' on the reproduction because the resource outflowed from this part to the basal part for the growth of sporophytes. Photosynthetic and respiratory activities and gross production in relation to temperature conditions were investigated in
the population of an evergreen herb,Pyrola japonica, growing on the floor of a deciduous forest in the warm temperate region of central Japan.
Analysis of the temperature-photosynthesis relationship ofP. japonica leaves during the growing season indicated distinct seasonal changes in the temperature optimum for photosynthesis. This
population was found to be acclimatable to ambient air temperatures exceeding 15C, but this acclimation became less pronounced
under thermal conditions below 15 C. This plant possessed narrow photosynthetic optima in the warm season but wide optima
in the cold season. The shape of the temperature-respiration curve did not vary significantly with the months except for April.
The Q10 for respiration between 10 C and 20 C was calculated to be 1.93–2.65. Annual dry matter loss associated with respiration
was estimated to amount to 159.1 g d.w.m−2 based on the measurements of the seasonal changes in the respiratory activity of each organ. Gross production of this population
was estimated to be 219.3 g d.w.m−2 year−1 as the sum total of the net production (60.2 g d.w.m−2year−1) and the respiration. Monthly gross production was high in the early growing season, and low and stable in winter. 相似文献

We studied the influence of avian seed dispersal on the structuring of genetic diversity in a population of a tropical tree, Ocotea tenera (Lauraceae). The seeds of O. tenera are principally dispersed by four, relatively specialized, fruit-eating bird species (emerald toucanets, keel-billed toucans, resplendent quetzals, and three-wattled bellbirds). We found high genetic diversity within the overall population and significant, nonrandom structuring of that diversity among subpopulations. Subpopulations contained members of several sibling groups, and most saplings within subpopulations were shown not to be the progeny of adult trees within the same subpopulation. Our data indicate that O. tenera subpopulations are founded with several seeds from few maternal families, and that this mode of establishment is an important determinant of population genetic architecture. 相似文献

Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of a habitat's spatial structure on population variability in two species of freshwater snails (Physa acuta and Austropeplea ollula). To alter the spatial structure of the habitat, vinyl chloride plates were hung in experimental tanks, providing three types of spatial structure: Complex structure, Simple structure and Control (no structure). In Experiment 1, the average number of individuals in a tank did not differ among the three types of structure 2 months after the introduction of the snails, but the variability of the number of individuals in the Complex structure tanks was lowest, whereas the variability in the Control tanks was highest. In Experiment 2, in addition to the spatial structure of the habitat, three types of species interaction were designed as experimental treatments: only P. acuta was introduced into the tanks (P. acuta tanks), only A. ollula was introduced into the tanks (A. ollulatanks) and both P. acuta and A. ollula were introduced into the tanks (two-species tanks). For the P. acuta tanks, the variability of the number of P. acuta individuals in the Complex structure tanks was lowest, and the variability in the Control tanks was highest when the effect of the number of individuals in a tank was subtracted. For the A. ollula tanks and the two-species tanks, there were no significant differences in the variability of the population size among the different treatments of spatial structure. The spatial distribution of P. acuta was more uniform than the distribution of A. ollula on the plates of complex structure. Our results indicate that the spatial structure of the habitat influences the variability of population size (the variance of the number of individuals in different populations during the earlier period after the introduction of the snails), but the effects depend on the spatial behavior of individuals and the interaction with other species. 相似文献

I attempted to characterize spatial units of local dynamics and dispersal in banner-tailed kangaroo rats (Dipodomys spectabilis), to determine if spatial structure influenced population dynamics in the way predicted by current metapopulation models. D. spectabilis exhibited a hierarchical spatial structure. Local populations that appeared as discrete entities on a scale of kilometers were subdivided into clusters of mounds on a scale of meters. This structure, however, cannot be characyerized in terms of the discrete habitat patches envisioned by the metapopulation models. Occupied areas were statistically distinguishable from the surrounding matrix, but this difference was only quantitative. There were no discrete boundaries between occupied areas and the matrix. Habitat within occupied areas was heterogeneous, and occupied areas in different locations were statistically distinguishable from each other. High heterogeneity within occupied areas, and high contrast among them, make it difficult to define what is a suitable habitat patch for D. spectabilis. On a smaller spatial scale, there was significant aggregation of resident mounds within occupied areas. These aggregations, however, do not correspond to discrete habitat patches. Rather, they appear to result from an interaction between fine-scale habitat heterogeneity and limited dispersal due to natal philopatry and low adult vagility. These complications make it difficult to identify habitat patches independent of the species' distribution. For species like D. spectabilis that are patchily distributed but do not occupy discrete habitat patches, a patch occupancy approach does not seem appropriate for describing spatial structure. Hierarchical spatial structure underscores the need for a framework that incorporates multiple scales of spatial structure, rather than one that pre-imposes a single spatial scale as being important for population dynamics. A framework that (i) considers patchiness as a combination of both habitat heterogeneity, and life-history and behavioral characteristics, and (ii) incorporates hierarchical spatial structure, appears to be the most suitable for conceptualizing spatial dynamics of behaviorally complex vertebrates such as D. spectabilis. 相似文献

The life history and matter economy were studied on an evergreen herb,Pyrola japonica Klenze, population growing on the floor of a deciduous forest in a warm temperate region, central Japan. Seasonal changes
in standing crop, bulk density and reserve substance of each organ and in leaf area were investigated over a year. Monthly
and annual net production of the population were estimated based on the growth in dry weight and the seasonal dynamics of
reserve substance. Seasonal peak value of the monthly net production was 16.7 g d.w.m−2 in May. The annual net production was estimated to be 60.2 g d.w.m−2.
Two phases were recognized in the annual pattern of development and matter economy of this plant. Phase I, from April to June,
was characterized by the development of aboveground vegetative organs and the consumption of reserve substance rrom old organs.
Phase II, from July to March, was characterized by the development of reproductive and underground organs, and the accumulation
of reserve substance. Phase II was further divided into two sub-phases according to the behavior of the reserve substance
and the rate of net production. The production process of the population was compared with those of other evergreen herbs

TheNeomysis integer population of a shallow Frisian freshwater lake, situated in the north of the Netherlands, was studied from May until October 1980. The results were compared with observations on populations in other Frisian lakes, and with the results reported by other authors on brackish-water and marine populations of this species.Three generations were observed: one overwintering generation and two summer generations. Reproduction stopped completely during winter. During 1980 population densities ofN. integer were relatively low in all Frisian lakes. In Slotermeer the maximum population density was only 6 individuals m–2, production amounted to 10 mg dry wt m–2 yr–1. The annual P/B ratio was 4.0. The diet ofN. integer consisted, in terms of biomass, of more than 95% detritus and animal food, the latter mainly consisting ofBosmina and cyclopoid copepods. Feeding intensity reached a maximum at sunset. It was still high during first part of the night and was low in the morning just after sunrise. 相似文献

Ferrissia wautieri, a freshwater limpet, is a widely distributed species in The Netherlands. In a pond near Nijmegen samples were taken twice a month over the year to study the population size and structure of this species in relation to the water temperature. Only ancyloids were found. Production of juveniles is temperature-dependent; peak numbers occurred in July and August. Just-hatched juveniles (shell length 0.6–1.0 mm) occurred over a lengthy period in the year, but were absent in March and April. During these months the collected numbers of specimens were very low. Summary The effects of time of the day and frequency of application and of purity of artificially deposited pollen loads on fruiting and seed set were studied in Rhinanthus angustifolius (diurnally visited by bumblebees) and Viscaria vulgaris (diurnally visited by bumblebees, nocturnally by sphingid moths).Time of the day did not influence pollination success in either species. Increase of pollination frequency increased fruiting and seed set in Rhinanthus but had no affect on Viscaria. Five successive artificial pollinations were needed to achieve seed set equal to that observed naturally in Rhinanthus while a single artificial pollination was sufficient in Viscaria. Mixing Lupinus and Viscaria pollen did not reduce fruiting and seed set in Viscaria. The results are discussed in relation to observed seed sets in early and late flowers, and small and large patches of Viscaria vulgaris and among Rhinanthus flowers in populations of different densities. 相似文献

The regeneration process ofCryptomeria japonica forests was studied from surveys of age and initial growth of the coniferous stumps in plots of 2.66 ha in total on Yakushima Island, south Japan. The conifers germinated during particular regeneration periods each of which was shorter than 100 years. The periods repeated themselves several times in each plot, and conifers of each period formed patches. Both tree cutting and natural gap formation of the canopies initiated the regenerations. The saplings that were thought to have germinated before the initiation of the regeneration grew slowly. After the initiation, the saplings that germinated earlier grew more quickly. For the three codominant conifers:Cryptomeria japonica, Tsuga sieboldii, andAbies firma, the shade tolerance was inversely correlated with maximum age. Even the most shade-tolerantA. firma was a gap-dependent species in regeneration periods, and there were no species differences in the colonizing times during the regeneration period. Shade-intolerant long-lived species and shade-tolerant short-lived species coexisted as climax species, not as alternate species in the sere of succession. 相似文献

In previous investigations, natural layering of Japanese stone pine (Pinus pumila) was suggested by the occurrence of adventitious roots. However, there is no genetic evidence so far that this species actually
produces offspring by natural layering. We, therefore, investigated clonal structure and spatial genetic structure within
a 38×18 m plot on Mt. Aino-dake, using allozyme, random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD), and inter-simple sequence repeat
(ISSR) analyses. We found 24 genets, with stems found to be genetically identical in multiple tests, which extended later-ally
against the direction of the slope, indicating that there were clonal structures originating from elongation of ramified stems
and subsequent natural layering. The results suggest, however, that less than one third of the 200 stems analyzed from this
site were clonaly propagated. We also analyzed spatial genetic structure by spatial autocorrelation. Many of the spatial autocorrelation
coefficients were significantly positive in short distance classes. We concluded that the species has genetic structures which

The herbaceous vine Aristolochia contorta (Aristolochiaceae) is a rare plant with a fragmented area in East Asia. Confocal laser-scanning microscopy and stereomicroscopy were employed to examine the seed and embryo structure. This is the first research on embryo anatomy in Aristolochia. Shape and structure of this embryo may be phylogenetically significant. The seed structure of A. contorta is similar to that of other Aristolochia species. Considerable variation is found for productivity traits; the average seed set is rather low (26.7%). The studied seed and embryo traits of A. contorta are found to be variable, but may be potentially informative at the genus and species level. The restricted productivity and reduced population size threaten the continued survival of A. contorta and, perhaps, the butterfly that depends on it. 相似文献

Summary
In vitro-grown apical meristems of wasabi (Wasabia japonica Matsumura) were successfully cryopreserved by vitrification. Excised apical meristems precultured on solidified M S medium containing 0.3M sucrose at 20°C for 1 day were loaded with a mixture of 2M glycerol and 0.4M sucrose for 20 min at 25°C. Cryoprotected meristems were then sufficiently dehydrated with a highly concentrated vitrification solution (designated PVS2) for 10 min at 25°C prior to a plunge into liquid nitrogen. After rapid warming, the meristems were expelled into 2 ml of 1.2M sucrose for 20 min and then plated on solidified culture medium. Successfully vitrified and warmed meristems remained green after plating, resumed growth within 3 days, and directly developed shoots within two weeks. The average rate of normal shoot formation amounted to about 80 to 90% in the cryopreserved meristems. This method was successfully applied to three other cultivars of wasabi. This vitrification procedure promises to become a routine method for cryopreserving meristems of wasabi.Abbreviations BA
