Determining appropriate feeding regimes has important welfare implications for captive primates. This study examined the preference of food bowl heights in 6 pairs of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus) housed in a 2-tier cage system. Given that marmosets are arboreal and spend most of their time in the upper half of their cages, we predicted that the marmosets would prefer a food bowl positioned at the top of the cage over one positioned at the bottom. We further predicted that this would be more apparent for the marmosets housed in lower tier than upper tier cages. Given a choice regarding where to feed, marmosets did prefer the top bowl to the bottom bowl; however, when only 1 food bowl was presented, its position had no significant effect on the marmosets' feeding behavior. In addition, contrary to the prediction, there were few differences in the marmosets' feeding behavior in the upper and lower tier cages. Feeding the marmosets in a bowl at the bottom of their cage did not result in greater cage use. On the basis of this study, we recommend positioning captive marmosets' food bowls high in the cage.  相似文献

In humans, the pleasantness of odors is a major contributor to social relationships and food intake. Smells evoke attraction and repulsion responses, reflecting the hedonic value of the odorant. While olfactory preferences are known to be strongly modulated by experience and learning, it has been recently suggested that, in humans, the pleasantness of odors may be partly explained by the physicochemical properties of the odorant molecules themselves. If odor hedonic value is indeed predetermined by odorant structure, then it could be hypothesized that other species will show similar odor preferences to humans. Combining behavioral and psychophysical approaches, we here show that odorants rated as pleasant by humans were also those which, behaviorally, mice investigated longer and human subjects sniffed longer, thereby revealing for the first time a component of olfactory hedonic perception conserved across species. Consistent with this, we further show that odor pleasantness rating in humans and investigation time in mice were both correlated with the physicochemical properties of the molecules, suggesting that olfactory preferences are indeed partly engraved in the physicochemical structure of the odorant. That odor preferences are shared between mammal species and are guided by physicochemical features of odorant stimuli strengthens the view that odor preference is partially predetermined. These findings open up new perspectives for the study of the neural mechanisms of hedonic perception.  相似文献

A bland diet with the odor of meat or air blown through it waspresented to Beagle dogs in daily two choice preference tests.At first, there was a 70% preference for the food that smelledlike meat but, by the third week, the preference had fallento 52%. These results indicated that, although dogs initiallyprefer food that smells like meat, odor must be paired withsome other property of meat, probably taste, for the preferencesto be sustained. Intact dogs significantly preferred lamb overhorsemeat 67±4%, pork over lamb 89±3%, pork overhorsemeat 89±3%, beef over lamb 84±2%, and beefover horsemeat 89±2% in two choice preference tests.Dogs made anosmic by intranasal infusion of zinc sulfate hadpreferences significantly less than those of intact dogs anddid not show a significant preference for one meat over anotherwith the exception of pork, which was preferred to lamb (61±4%).Anosmic dogs showed preferences similar to those of intact dogsfor a sucrose containing over a nonsucrose diet and for a horsemeatcontaining diet over a non-meat diet. These results indicatethat olfaction is important in canine food preferences whichinvolve discrimination between meats, but not for sweet versusnon-sweet and meat versus non-meat preferences.  相似文献

Objective: Using self‐refilling soup bowls, this study examined whether visual cues related to portion size can influence intake volume without altering either estimated intake or satiation. Research Methods and Procedures: Fifty‐four participants (BMI, 17.3 to 36.0 kg/m2; 18 to 46 years of age) were recruited to participate in a study involving soup. The experiment was a between‐subject design with two visibility levels: 1) an accurate visual cue of a food portion (normal bowl) vs. 2) a biased visual cue (self‐refilling bowl). The soup apparatus was housed in a modified restaurant‐style table in which two of four bowls slowly and imperceptibly refilled as their contents were consumed. Outcomes included intake volume, intake estimation, consumption monitoring, and satiety. Results: Participants who were unknowingly eating from self‐refilling bowls ate more soup [14.7 ± 8.4 vs. 8.5 ± 6.1 oz; F(1,52) = 8.99; p < 0.01] than those eating from normal soup bowls. However, despite consuming 73% more, they did not believe they had consumed more, nor did they perceive themselves as more sated than those eating from normal bowls. This was unaffected by BMI. Discussion: These findings are consistent with the notion that the amount of food on a plate or bowl increases intake because it influences consumption norms and expectations and it lessens one's reliance on self‐monitoring. It seems that people use their eyes to count calories and not their stomachs. The importance of having salient, accurate visual cues can play an important role in the prevention of unintentional overeating.  相似文献

The role of the avian hippocampal formation in a one-trial food association task was investigated across various retention intervals. Control pigeons, lesioned controls, and pigeons with hippocampal formation lesions were allowed to find food hidden in one of four uniquely decorated bowls in a specific location in a room. After retention intervals of 10 min, 1 h, 7 h, and 24 h, pigeons were placed back in the room with the same bowl in the same location (unmanipulated trials) or with the previously rewarding bowl in a new location and a different bowl in the previously rewarding location (test trials). Although all groups chose the correct bowl during unmanipulated trials, hippocampal formation lesioned birds' choices to the bowl in the correct location decreased compared to the combined controls during the test trials. The results suggest that hippocampal formation lesions do not impair long-term memory of a goal after one experience but significantly decrease the use of spatial information to return to that goal. The present study aimed at analyzing the odor properties of a group of physiological human metabolites of the odorant 1,8‐cineole: 2,3‐dehydro‐, α2,3‐epoxy‐, α/β2‐hydroxy‐, α3‐hydroxy‐, 4‐hydroxy‐, 7‐hydroxy‐, 9‐hydroxy‐, 2‐oxo‐, and 3‐oxo‐1,8‐cineole. These metabolites constitute a group of structurally closely related molecules, which differ mainly in nature and position of O‐containing functional groups. They thus offer the possibility to correlate odor properties with molecular structure, i.e., to establish structure? odor relationships of compounds that are biologically generated from a potent odorant as parent substance. Generally, the metabolites preserved the eucalyptus‐like odor quality of 1,8‐cineole but showed additional odor notes such as sweet, citrus‐like, plastic‐like, earthy, musty, and faecal, which made them distinguishable. The individual enantiomers of chiral molecules also exhibited different odors. With the exception of 2,3‐dehydro‐1,8‐cineole, all metabolites showed a highly decreased odor threshold in comparison to 1,8‐cineole. The determination of odor qualities and odor thresholds was accomplished by gas chromatography/olfactometry (GC/O) on achiral and chiral GC capillaries. The results were correlated with common theories on structure? odor relationships.  相似文献

In various situations animals prefer to work for food even when free food is available. Several hypotheses have been put forward to explain this phenomenon, most of them either suggesting that a learned behaviour may be self-reinforcing or that the animal has to perform a certain species specific behaviour. Mongolian gerbils (Meriones unguiculatus) were used in the present study. Half of them were given access to a cage with one bowl with sunflower seeds, and another bowl with sand and 30 seeds, 20 min/d for 5 d. The amount of seeds eaten from each bowl and the time spent digging in the bowls, on the floor, and in the corners was recorded. The animals were then put in the same cage with one bowl with seeds but the other bowl now contained only sand (20 min/d for 5 d). For the other group the treatment was reversed. Almost all digging took place in the 30 seed bowl, and most seeds eaten were taken from this bowl. When this bowl contained only sand the amount of digging went down drastically for that bowl. Nor was there any compensatory digging on the floor or in the corners of the cage. The present results indicate that the self-reinforcing hypothesis and the obligatory species specific response hypothesis are not enough to explain the contra-freeloading phenomenon. A possible alternative hypothesis, that the behaviour is a way of exploring and reducing uncertainty is discussed.  相似文献

Human neonates were exposed to an artificial odorant for 22h within the first two days after birth. When tested on days16–18 postpartum, these infants displayed preferentialorientation to the exposure odor when paired with a novel odorant.The effects of early mere exposure on the stimulus propertiesof odors can therefore endure over a two-week interval, indicatingthat infants retain a memory trace of the exposure odor throughoutthat time period.  相似文献

In adult rats, repeated exposure to an odorant, in absence of any experimentally delivered reinforcement, leads to a drastic decrease in mitral/tufted (M/T) cell responsiveness, not only for the familiar odor but also for other novel odors. In the present study, using two different and complementary in situ hybridization methods, we analyzed the effect of familiarization with an odorant on c‐fos and arg 3.1 mRNA expression levels, and we examined the odor specificity of this effect. Odor exposure induces a specific increase in c‐fos and arg 3.1 expression in some particular olfactory bulb quadrants. Previous familiarization with the test odor results in a decreased expression of both IEGs in these quadrants, leading to the alteration of the odor‐specific pattern of c‐fos and arg 3.1 expression. In contrast, this odor‐specific pattern is not affected when different odors are used for familiarization and test. Similarly, an odor‐specific familiarization effect leading to a reduced c‐fos and arg 3.1 expression was also detected in the cingulate cortex and in the anterior piriform cortex. These results support our hypothesis that the decrease in M/T cell responsiveness following a preceding familiarization with an odorant may be related to a particular form of synaptic plasticity involving changes at the genomic level, and reveals further insight in olfactory information processing and the cellular mechanisms underlying familiarization in the olfactory system. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Early experiences are of potential importance in shaping long-term behavior. This study examined the relative influence of prenatal and/or early postnatal experience of chemosensory stimuli on subsequent olfactory and dietary preferences of cats as newborns, at 9-10 weeks, and at 6 months. Cats were exposed to vanillin or 4-ethylguaiacol via their mother's diet either prenatally, postnatally, perinatally (prenatal and postnatal), or experienced no exposure to the stimuli (control). Newborns were given a two-choice olfactory test between the familiar "odor" and no odor; 9-10 week olds were tested for their preference between two food treats, one flavored with the familiar stimulus and the other unflavored; at 6 months, cats were given a choice of two bowls of food, one flavored with the familiar stimulus and the other unflavored. At all ages, cats preferred the familiar, and avoided the unfamiliar, stimulus. Perinatal exposure exerted the strongest influence on preference. Prenatal exposure influenced preference at all ages and postnatal exposure exerted a stronger effect as the cat aged. We conclude that long-term chemosensory and dietary preferences of cats are influenced by prenatal and early (nursing) postnatal experience, supporting a natural and biologically relevant mechanism for the safe transmission of diet from mother to young.  相似文献

The microvasculariaztion of the lateral line organs (LLOs) of the adult pipid frog, Xenopus laevis was studied by scanning electron microscopy of vascular corrosion casts (VCCs) and correlative light microscopy of paraplast embedded tissues sections. Scanning electron micrographs of VCCs revealed that each neuromast within the LLO rests on a distinct bowl‐like capillary network (vascular bowl). One to three vascular bowls were supplied by an ascending arteriole and drained by a descending venule towards the skin deep dermal vascular network. Blood flow regulation mechanisms in form of intimal cushions were present at the origin of ascending arterioles supplying LLOs, microvenous valves were present at the confluence of deep dermal venules and veins. This together with sprouting and nonsprouting angiogenesis (intussusceptive microvascular growth) found in vascular bowls demonstrate that in adult Xenopus the capillary bed of LLO's still can be adjusted to changing energetic needs. In the traditional sense, food ingestion consists of prehending, masticating, swallowing, and digesting plant matter. It is also possible to ingest plants without eating them. Volatile compounds are inhaled directly into the lungs and transported from the lungs into the bloodstream. Volatiles in high concentrations could presumably produce toxicosis, without an herbivore ever ingesting a plant in the customary sense. Volatile compounds may be aposematic, serving to warn potential predators of toxins in plants. We conducted three experiments to explore the roles of odor, taste, and toxicity in the food preferences of lambs. The first experiment determined if brief exposure to a novel odor followed by lithium chloride (LiCl)‐induced toxicosis caused lambs to avoid a familiar food that contained the odor. Lambs that sniffed coconut‐flavored barley and then received LiCl subsequently ate less coconut‐flavored barley than lambs that did not receive LiCl. The second experiment determined if lambs were deterred from eating a familiar food by the odor of Astragalus bisulcatus. A. bisulcatus is a malodorous (to humans) sulfur‐containing herb considered unpalatable and toxic. Neither odor nor intraruminal infusions of A. bisulcatus deterred lambs from feeding. The third experiment also determined how the degree of familiarity with the odor of A. bisulcatus, along with toxicosis, influenced preference of lambs for food with or without the odor of A. bisulcatus. Lambs with 8 d exposure to the odor but not given LiCl ate similar amounts of food, with and without the odor of A. bisulcatus, whereas lambs given LiCl showed a mild aversion to food with the odor during testing. Lambs with 1 d exposure to the odor but no LiCl ate similar amounts of food, with and without the odor, whereas lambs given LiCl showed a strong but transient aversion to food with the odor. Collectively, these findings show that lambs responded strongly to novel odors, but their response was transient and depended on the postingestive consequences of toxins and nutrients associated with odor inhalation. Thus, we submit that odor alone, in the absence of toxicosis or nociception, is not a deterrent to herbivores that continually sample foods and adjust intake based on the postingestive effects of toxins and nutrients. It also is unlikely that non‐toxic plants can mimic the odors of toxic plants to avoid herbivory (Batesian mimicry), unless the odors are indistinguishable by herbivores, again because herbivores constantly sample foods.  相似文献

A set of infant features (large forehead, large and low‐lying eyes, and bulging cheeks), were described in classical ethology as social releasers, simple stimuli that evoke a stereotyped response, in this case nurturing. We assessed the attractiveness of such features in the faces of dogs or cats (adults and young) or teddy bears or human infants, and also related these preferences to the degree of attachment to a pet. Overall, faces with the infant features were rated as more attractive than those without. Human infant faces were no more attractive than those of kittens or puppies. Pet faces were rated as more attractive by pet owners than non‐pet owners, regardless of whether the faces had infant features. A preference was also found for infant features in teddy bear faces. Women showed higher ratings than men for pets with infant features, but not for human infants or pets without infant features. Parents found human infants’ faces more attractive than did non‐parents, but there were no differences for other faces with infant features. Preferences were to some extent specific to the participant’s preferred pet species. Owners who were more strongly attached to their pets showed stronger preferences for photographs with infant features. The findings are discussed in terms of the concept of social releaser, and its part in the development of attachment to a pet species.  相似文献

Twenty-two experienced panelists rated odor intensity of aqueous solutions of citral, octen-1-ol-3, and hexanal. The panel assessed unmixed components and mixtures (9 binary and 4 ternary). In sensory sessions dedicated to mixtures (n = 6), evaluation was focused on one target odor, presented at a fixed concentration. All components had lower odor intensity on mixed presentations. In many cases, information obtained from simpler systems was not extended to complex mixtures. In a mixture, the competition between odorant molecules on qualitative aspects (dominance/suppression) imbalanced components contribution, anticipated from the quantitative distribution. Hexanal appeared to be the potentially weaker odorant in paired combinations, whereas octen-1-ol-3 had a lower relative impact on ternary systems. Suppression of the odor of octen-1-ol-3 and a concomitant increase in the odor of hexanal was common to all ternary mixtures. Reciprocal inhibition of octen-1-ol-3 and citral odors through perceptual interactions was suspected. Mutual suppression is suspected to have eased the perception of hexanal intensity.  相似文献

For most olfactometers described in the literature, adjusting olfactory stimulation intensity involves modifying the dilution of the odorant in a neutral solution (water, mineral, oil, etc.), the dilution of the odorant air in neutral airflow, or the surface of the odorant in contact with airflow. But, for most of these above-mentioned devices, manual intervention is necessary for adjusting concentration. We present in this article a method of controlling odorant concentration via a computer which can be implemented on even the most dynamic olfactometers. We used Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), a technique commonly used in electronic or electrical engineering, and we have applied it to odor delivery. PWM, when applied to odor delivery, comprises an alternative presentation of odorant air and clean air at a high frequency. The cycle period (odor presentation and rest) is 200 ms. In order to modify odorant concentration, the ratio between the odorant period and clean air presentation during a cycle is modified. This ratio is named duty cycle. Gas chromatography measurements show that this method offers a range of mixing factors from 33% to 100% (continuous presentation of odor). Proof of principle is provided via a psychophysical experiment. Three odors (isoamyl acetate, butanol and pyridine) were presented to twenty subjects. Each odor was delivered three times with five values of duty cycles. After each stimulation, the subjects were asked to estimate the intensity of the stimulus on a 10 point scale, ranging from 0 (undetectable) to 9 (very strong). Results show a main effect of the duty cycles on the intensity ratings for all tested odors.  相似文献

Only little is known about whether single volatile compounds are as efficient in eliciting behavioral responses in animals as the whole complex mixture of a behaviorally relevant odor. Recent studies analysing the composition of volatiles in mammalian blood, an important prey-associated odor stimulus for predators, found the odorant trans-4,5-epoxy-(E)-2-decenal to evoke a typical “metallic, blood-like” odor quality in humans. We therefore assessed the behavior of captive Asian wild dogs (Cuon alpinus), African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus), South American bush dogs (Speothos venaticus), and Siberian tigers (Panthera tigris altaica) when presented with wooden logs that were impregnated either with mammalian blood or with the blood odor component trans-4,5-epoxy-(E)-2-decenal, and compared it to their behavior towards a fruity odor (iso-pentyl acetate) and a near-odorless solvent (diethyl phthalate) as control. We found that all four species displayed significantly more interactions with the odorized wooden logs such as sniffing, licking, biting, pawing, and toying, when they were impregnated with the two prey-associated odors compared to the two non-prey-associated odors. Most importantly, no significant differences were found in the number of interactions with the wooden logs impregnated with mammalian blood and the blood odor component in any of the four species. Only one of the four species, the South American bush dogs, displayed a significant decrease in the number of interactions with the odorized logs across the five sessions performed per odor stimulus. Taken together, the results demonstrate that a single blood odor component can be as efficient in eliciting behavioral responses in large carnivores as the odor of real blood, suggesting that trans-4,5-epoxy-(E)-2-decenal may be perceived by predators as a “character impact compound” of mammalian blood odor. Further, the results suggest that odorized wooden logs are a suitable manner of environmental enrichment for captive carnivores.  相似文献
