Circular or elliptical structures described as the genus Aptychopsis Barrande 1872 (and mostly referred to the Crustacea) represent the opercula of a specialized group of orthoceratids. Their morphology bears a considerable resemblance to the structure of the lower jaws (aptychi) of some Mesozoic ammonoids, particularly of the genus Physodoceras . Because of its size and structure, however, Aptychopsis cannot have functioned as a jaw apparatus. Observation of an operculumin siru supports this assumption as regards its functional and systematic position. The classification of the genus Aptychopsis as given by Jones and Woodward (1872–1893) is purely typological and hardly applicable in palaeobiology. Continuous gradations exist between the various morphological types. The lack of systematically distinctive features explains the unsuitability of Aptychopsis for biostratigraphical use. Aptychopsids occur in the Silurian of Central Bohemia between the Spirograprus turriculatus Zone and the Neodiversograptus nilssoni Zone, inclusive, with maximum frequency in the uppermost Wenlockian.

Three articulated valves of the genus Aptychopsis are interpreted as the operculum of a nautiloid. The valves are joined by an organic film which covers the entire dorsal valve. This genus has not been previously reported from North America.     

Confirmation of death.

A working party set up to study the problems surrounding the confirmation of death investigated current practice by means of a questionnaire sent to a random sample of accident and emergency departments in district general hospitals. Of the 38 replying, 24 said that bodies were examined in the ambulance, four in the accident and emergency department, and 10 in both. Answers to the other questions also suggest that the present procedures are in general unsatisfactory, and some dissatisfaction was expressed by departments. The individuals and organisations consulted were unanimous that confirmation of death should not be carried out in the ambulance. A change of practice would, however, create practical problems. The working party recommends therefore that the standard practice should be for all bodies to be properly examined by a doctor in the accident and emergency department, and that funds should be made available for any building alterations and increase in staff made necessary by such changes.     

Confirmation of the nomenclatural status ofMalassezia pachydermatis

Malassezia strains from dogs and rhinoceros all proved identical using mole % G + C and nDNA/DNA reassociation experiments. The use of the nameMalassezia pachydermatis, originally described for a strain isolated from a rhinoceros, is thus justified for non lipid-dependent strains of other sources.     

Confirmation of structure of the flavonol glucoside tambuletin

The structure of tambuletin, present in seeds of Xanthoxylum species has been confirmed as the 8-glucoside of gossypetin 7,4′-dimethyl ether.     

Confirmation of the identity of Orthotrichum arcangelianum Massari

Abstract

Literature dealing with the use of bryophytes for water quality assessment is briefly reviewed. Reasons for selection of the two bryophyte species, Eurhynchium riparioides and Fontinalis antipyretica, used in transplantation experiments, are discussed.

Results are presented showing that the breakdown of the two bryophyte species, exposed at six stations in the river Ebbw Fawr in the winters of 1970 and 1973, reflects improvements in water quality both downstream of the main source of pollution as a result of dilution and precipitation of pollutants, and over a period of 4 years as a result of improved effluent treatments.

Modifications of the technique to deal with various types of pollution are discussed.     

Confirmation of the linkage HL-A/PGM3.

In a series of 42 families with 101 children the linkage between HL-A and PGM3 could be confirmed (most likely recombination fraction for male equals 0.15).     

Confirmation of primitive chromosome structure in the hexaploid wheats

Summary Hybrids between Triticum aestivum cv Chinese Spring (CS) and T. dicoccoides of chromosome type E_1a showed only a few or no trivalents at meiosis, but both trivalents and quadrivalents were shown by hybrids with six other types. Since there is strong evidence that the E_1a type has the primitive chromosome structure of T. dicoccoides, Chinese Spring can be said to have the primitive chromosome structure of the hexaploid wheats in regard to reciprocal translocation.Contribution no. 51 from the Plant Germ-plasm Institute, Faculty of Agriculture, Kyoto University, Kyoto, Japan     

Confirmation of the sex difference in continuing subperiosteal apposition

A major sex difference in the rate of continuing bone expansion was confirmed for 5660 adult subjects of European ancestry. The five-decade gain in metacarpal midshaft area amounted to 8.4% in 3455 females and 2.8% in 2205 males. There was no systematic age effect on the length of the second metacarpal. Accordingly, both bone expansion and the marked sex difference in its magnitude may be attributed to sex-specific aspects of ageing much like the sex difference in endosteal surface loss.     

Rapid Fermentation Confirmation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae

A rapid sugar fermentation procedure has been developed for the confirmation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae from either primary isolation media or purification media. A lightly buffered salt solution with pH indicator and sugars was heavily inoculated with presumptively positive growth. Proper fermentation patterns are obtained in 1 to 4 h with no interference from inhibited contaminants or variation in results due to differing growth requirements of gonococcal strains.     

Opinion Dynamics with Confirmation Bias

Background

Confirmation bias is the tendency to acquire or evaluate new information in a way that is consistent with one''s preexisting beliefs. It is omnipresent in psychology, economics, and even scientific practices. Prior theoretical research of this phenomenon has mainly focused on its economic implications possibly missing its potential connections with broader notions of cognitive science.

Methodology/Principal Findings

We formulate a (non-Bayesian) model for revising subjective probabilistic opinion of a confirmationally-biased agent in the light of a persuasive opinion. The revision rule ensures that the agent does not react to persuasion that is either far from his current opinion or coincides with it. We demonstrate that the model accounts for the basic phenomenology of the social judgment theory, and allows to study various phenomena such as cognitive dissonance and boomerang effect. The model also displays the order of presentation effect–when consecutively exposed to two opinions, the preference is given to the last opinion (recency) or the first opinion (primacy) –and relates recency to confirmation bias. Finally, we study the model in the case of repeated persuasion and analyze its convergence properties.

Conclusions

The standard Bayesian approach to probabilistic opinion revision is inadequate for describing the observed phenomenology of persuasion process. The simple non-Bayesian model proposed here does agree with this phenomenology and is capable of reproducing a spectrum of effects observed in psychology: primacy-recency phenomenon, boomerang effect and cognitive dissonance. We point out several limitations of the model that should motivate its future development.

Confirmation and explaining how possible

Confirmation in evolutionary biology depends on what biologists take to be the genuine rivals. Investigating what constrains the scope of biological possibility provides part of the story: explaining how possible helps determine what counts as a genuine rival and thus informs confirmation. To clarify the criteria for genuine rivalry I distinguish between global and local constraints on biological possibility, and offer an account of how-possibly explanation. To sharpen the connection between confirmation and explaining how possible I discuss the view that formal inquiry can provide a kind of confirmation-theoretic support for evolutionary models, and offer an example of how-possibly explanation interacting with testing practice.
