The effects of acoustic and visual stimuli and their synergistic effects on heart rate variability including gender differences were investigated. Of particular interest was the influence of visual stimulus on heart rate variability during listening to simple sounds of different characters. Twelve male and 12 female university students were selected as subjects. The subjects listened at rest to 7 different figures of sound at loudness levels averaging 60 dB. Beat-to-beat R-R intervals were continuously recorded under the closed-eye condition (CEC) and the open-eye condition (OEC) prior to, during, and immediately after the exposure to acoustic stimuli. Low frequency (LF) power was defined over 0.04-0.15 Hz and high frequency (HF) power over 0.15-0.40 Hz. Cardiac autonomic function was estimated by plotting LF/HF in standard measure against HF in standard measure and by plotting LF/HF (%) against HF (%), accompanied by a demarcated central area. Values of LF/HF tended to be smaller under CEC than under OEC. Values of HF while listening to a 110 Hz sine wave under CEC were significantly greater than values for 880 Hz and 3520 Hz sine waves, or for 110 Hz or 880 Hz sawtooth waves, under OEC. Under CEC, values of HF for 7 figures of sound were greater in females than in males. The value of HF of sine wave for 110 Hz under CEC and OEC was significantly greater than that for white noise under the OEC. The results suggest that the cardiac parasympathetic nervous activity during auditory excitation increases with elimination of visual stimuli and tends to be greater in females than in males.  相似文献

Four strains of the homofermentative, obligately anaerobic thermophile Clostridium thermoaceticum were compared in pH-controlled batch fermentation for their tolerance to acetic acid, efficiency of converting glucose to acetic acid and cell mass, and growth rate. At pH 6 (and pH 7) and initial acetic acid concentrations of less than 10 g/liter, the four strains had mass doubling times of 5 to 7 h and conversion efficiencies to acetic acid and cell mass of about 90% (70 to 110%) and 10%, respectively. At pH 6 and initial acetic acid concentrations of greater than 10 g/liter, only two of the strains grew, the mass doubling time increased to 18 h, and the conversion efficiencies to acetic acid and cell mass remained unchanged. Both of these strains had been selected for their ability to grow in the presence of acetate at neutral pH. The highest acetic acid concentrations reached were about 15 and 20 g/liter at pH 6 and 7, respectively. C. thermoaceticum is apparently more sensitive to free acetic acid than to either acetate ion or pH. It was also shown that, at pH 6 and 7, the redox potential must be at least as low as −300 and −360 mV, respectively, for growth to occur.  相似文献

Background

Visual perception is usually stable and accurate. However, when the two eyes are simultaneously presented with conflicting stimuli, perception falls into a sequence of spontaneous alternations, switching between one stimulus and the other every few seconds. Known as binocular rivalry, this visual illusion decouples subjective experience from physical stimulation and provides a unique opportunity to study the neural correlates of consciousness. The temporal properties of this alternating perception have been intensively investigated for decades, yet the relationship between two fundamental properties - the sequence of percepts and the duration of each percept - remains largely unexplored.

Methodology/Principal Findings

Here we examine the relationship between the percept sequence and the percept duration by quantifying their sensitivity to the strength imbalance between two monocular stimuli. We found that the percept sequence is far more susceptible to the stimulus imbalance than does the percept duration. The percept sequence always begins with the stronger stimulus, even when the stimulus imbalance is too weak to cause a significant bias in the percept duration. Therefore, introducing a small stimulus imbalance affects the percept sequence, whereas increasing the imbalance affects the percept duration, but not vice versa. To investigate why the percept sequence is so vulnerable to the stimulus imbalance, we further measured the interval between the stimulus onset and the first percept, during which subjects experienced the fusion of two monocular stimuli. We found that this interval is dramatically shortened with increased stimulus imbalance.

Conclusions/Significance

Our study shows that in binocular rivalry, the strength imblanace between monocular stimuli has a much greater impact on the percept sequence than on the percept duration, and increasing this imbalance can accelerate the process responsible for the percept sequence.  相似文献

Spectral analysis of skin blood flow has demonstrated low-frequency (LF, 0.03-0.15 Hz) and high-frequency (HF, 0.15-0.40 Hz) oscillations, similar to oscillations in R-R interval, systolic pressure, and muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA). It is not known whether the oscillatory profile of skin blood flow is secondary to oscillations in arterial pressure or to oscillations in skin sympathetic nerve activity (SSNA). MSNA and SSNA differ markedly with regard to control mechanisms and morphology. MSNA contains vasoconstrictor fibers directed to muscle vasculature, closely regulated by baroreceptors. SSNA contains both vasomotor and sudomotor fibers, differentially responding to arousals and thermal stimuli. Nevertheless, MSNA and SSNA share certain common characteristics. We tested the hypothesis that LF and HF oscillatory components are evident in SSNA, similar to the oscillatory components present in MSNA. We studied 18 healthy normal subjects and obtained sequential measurements of MSNA and SSNA from the peroneal nerve during supine rest. Measurements were also obtained of the electrocardiogram, beat-by-beat blood pressure (Finapres), and respiration. Spectral analysis showed LF and HF oscillations in MSNA, coherent with similar oscillations in both R-R interval and systolic pressure. The HF oscillation of MSNA was coherent with respiration. Similarly, LF and HF spectral components were evident in SSNA variability, coherent with corresponding variability components of R-R interval and systolic pressure. HF oscillations of SSNA were coherent with respiration. Thus our data suggest that these oscillations may be fundamental characteristics shared by MSNA and SSNA, possibly reflecting common central mechanisms regulating sympathetic outflows subserving different regions and functions.  相似文献

Taste receptor cells (TRCs)respond to acid stimulation, initiating perception of sour taste.Paradoxically, the pH of weak acidic stimuli correlates poorly with theperception of their sourness. A fundamental issue surrounding sourtaste reception is the identity of the sour stimulus. We tested thehypothesis that acids induce sour taste perception by penetratingplasma membranes as H+ ions or as undissociated moleculesand decreasing the intracellular pH (pHi) of TRCs. Our datasuggest that taste nerve responses to weak acids (acetic acid andCO2) are independent of stimulus pH but strongly correlatewith the intracellular acidification of polarized TRCs. Taste nerveresponses to CO2 were voltage sensitive and were blockedwith MK-417, a specific blocker of carbonic anhydrase. Strong acids(HCl) decrease pHi in a subset of TRCs that contain apathway for H+ entry. Both the apical membrane and theparacellular shunt pathway restrict H+ entry such that alarge decrease in apical pH is translated into a relatively smallchange in TRC pHi within the physiological range. Weconclude that a decrease in TRC pHi is the proximate stimulus in rat sour taste transduction.

We propose a simple moving-average (MA) model that uses the low-frequency (LF) component of the peroneal muscle sympathetic nerve spike rate (LF(spike rate)) and the high-frequency (HF) component of respiration (HF(Resp)) to describe the LF neurovascular fluctuations and the HF mechanical oscillations in systolic blood pressure (SBP), respectively. This method was validated by data from eight healthy subjects (23-47 yr old, 6 male, 2 female) during a graded tilt (15 degrees increments every 5 min to a 60 degrees angle). The LF component of SBP (LF(SBP)) had a strong baroreflex-mediated feedback correlation with LF(spike rate) (r = -0.69 +/- 0.05) and also a strong feedforward relation to LF(spike rate) [r = 0.58 +/- 0.03 with LF(SBP) delay (tau) = 5.625 +/- 0.15 s]. The HF components of spike rate (HF(spike rate)) and SBP (HF(SBP)) were not significantly correlated. Conversely, HF(Resp) and HF(SBP) were highly correlated (r = -0.79 +/- 0.04), whereas LF(Resp) and LF(SBP) were significantly less correlated (r = 0.45 +/- 0.08). The mean correlation coefficients between the measured and model-predicted LF(SBP) (r = 0.74 +/- 0.03) in the supine position did not change significantly during tilt. The mean correlation between the measured and model-predicted HF(SBP) was 0.89 +/- 0.02 in the supine position. R(2) values for the regression analysis of the model-predicted and measured LF and HF powers indicate that 78 and 91% of the variability in power can be explained by the linear relation of LF(spike rate) to LF(SBP) and HF(Resp) to HF(SBP). We report a simple two-component model using neural sympathetic and mechanical respiratory inputs that can explain the majority of blood pressure fluctuation at rest and during orthostatic stress in healthy subjects.  相似文献

Effect of flow on O2 consumption during progressive hypoxemia   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Rabbit hindlimb preparations perfused with blood from donor rabbits were used to determine whether O2 consumption (VO2) during hypoxemia is limited by total O2 transport (TO2) or by capillary O2 driving pressure, as reflected by the venous PO2 (PVO2). The preparations were randomized into two groups: low flow (LF) and high flow (HF), perfused at 18 and 32 ml.min-1.kg of preparation wt-1, respectively. After a 1-h base-line period with arterial PO2 (PaO2) greater than 100 Torr, both groups were exposed to progressive decrements in PaO2 to less than 10 Torr. Sequential sets of arterial and venous blood gases were obtained, and VO2, TO2, and O2 extraction ratio (ERO2) were calculated. A plot of PVO2 vs. TO2 showed higher levels of PVO2 (P less than 0.05) in LF than HF, when compared at similar levels of TO2. Therefore the experimental protocol allowed the comparison of the separate effects of TO2 or PVO2 on VO2. Plotting VO2 as a function of TO2 revealed two distinct curves (P less than 0.05), with LF having a greater VO2 than HF at a given TO2. Conversely, a plot of VO2 as a function of PVO2 did not show a difference between the groups. The ERO2 of LF was greater than HF when compared at similar levels of TO2 (P less than 0.05). We conclude from these data that during progressive hypoxemia VO2 appears to be primarily limited by factors that determine capillary O2 diffusion. This conclusion supports the Kroghian theory of capillary O2 exchange.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: In Japan, consumption of Natto, a fermented bean dish, is recommended because of its high quality protein, digestibility in the gut and its preventive effect on blood clot formation due to high vitamin K content. However, consumption of Natto in Kansai and the Chugoku area (the western part of Honshu) is less than that in the other areas of Japan probably because of a "food related cultural inhibition". In this study, we determined which characteristic of Natto (appearance, odor or taste) most affect subjects' perception of sensory attributes by observation of brain hemodynamics in relation to subjects' preference for Natto. FINDINGS: In this experiment, we defined each subject's changes in brain hemodynamics as (+) or () corresponding to an increase or a decrease in total hemoglobin concentration after stimuli compared to that before stimuli. As a result, there was no relation between preference for Natto and change in brain hemodynamics by the stimuli of "looking at" or "smelling", while there was a significant relationship between preference and stimulus of "ingestion"; (+) : ()=21:15 in the subjects of the "favorite" group and (+): ()=30:7 in the subjects of the "nonfavorite" group (P=0.034). CONCLUSION: This result indicated that characteristic "taste" of Natto most affects preference for Natto.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of isoflurane on unstimulated and pilocarpine-stimulated parotid saliva secretion. Ten male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing 350-400 g were randomized into two groups, and the saliva flow rate and lag phase were measured at two doses of isoflurane in a crossover study design. Increasing the isoflurane concentration from 1% to 2% was associated with a 19% decrease in saliva secretion rate, and the lag to saliva secretion was increased by 155%. To clarify whether the effect of isoflurane (1.5%) on the parotid flow varied with stimulus intensity, we measured the parotid flow induced by seven different doses of pilocarpine on sham-irradiated rats and rats irradiated with single doses of 15 Gy. A maximal pilocarpine response was obtained with 1.5 mg/kg in both irradiated and sham-irradiated rats; however, the parotid flow of the irradiated rats was 50% slower than that of the sham-irradiated rats. In conclusion, 1.5% isoflurane was found to be a good compromise between proper anesthesia and isoflurane-induced inhibition of saliva secretion. Pilocarpine induces saliva secretion in a dose-dependent matter, with supra-maximal stimulation achieved using 1.5 mg/kg.  相似文献

Previous reports suggest that inflammatory bowel diseases may be accompanied by abnormalities in the neural autonomic profile. We tested the hypotheses that 1) an exaggerated sympathetic activity characterizes active ulcerative colitis (UC) and 2) a reduction of sympathetic activity by clonidine would be associated with clinical changes of UC. In 23 patients with UC and 20 controls, muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA), ECG, blood pressure, and respiration were continuously recorded, and plasma catecholamine was evaluated both at rest and during a 75 degrees head-up tilt. Autonomic profile was assessed by MSNA, norepinephrine, epinephrine, spectral markers of low-frequency (LF) cardiac sympathetic (LF(RR); normalized units) and high-frequency (HF) parasympathetic (HF(RR); normalized units) modulation and sympathetic vasomotor control (LF systolic arterial pressure; LF(SAP)), obtained by spectrum analysis of the R-R interval and systolic pressure variability. Among UC patients, 16 agreed to be randomly assigned to 8-wk transdermal clonidine (15 mg/wk, 9 subjects), or placebo (7 patients). An autonomic profile, Disease Activity Index (DAI), and endoscopic pattern were compared before and after clonidine/placebo. At rest, MSNA, heart rate (HR), LF(RR), LF/HF, and LF(SAP) were higher and HF(RR) was lower in patients than in controls. Tilt decreased HF(RR) and increased MSNA and LF(RR) less in patients than in controls. Clonidine decreased HR, MSNA, epinephrine, LF(RR), and increased HF(RR), whereas placebo had no effects. Changes of the autonomic profile after clonidine were associated with reduction of DAI score. An overall increase of sympathetic activity characterized active UC. Normalization of the autonomic profile by clonidine was accompanied by an improvement of the disease.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine the changes in autonomic control of the heart associated with classical appetitive conditioning in rats. We trained rats to learn that a movement into a test chamber was followed by delivery of reward (contextual conditioning) and performed power spectral analysis of heart rate variability from electrocardiograms recorded using the telemetry system. We investigated the sympathovagal balance of autonomic regulation of the heart in response to not only the conditioned stimulus (the movement into the test chamber), but also the unconditioned stimulus (reward), and compared the results of these two kinds of emotional states; it might be considered that "the reward-expecting state" is evoked by the conditioned stimulus and "the reward-receiving state" is evoked by the unconditioned stimulus in rats. The reward-expecting state resulted in a significant increase in both low frequency (LF) power and high frequency (HF) power with no change in heart rate (HR) and LF/HF ratio, indicating that both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity increased with no change in sympathovagal balance. The reward-receiving state resulted in a significant increase in HR and a significant decrease in LF power, HF power, and LF/HF ratio, indicating that both sympathetic and parasympathetic activity decreased with predominance in the parasympathetic activity. These results suggest that the method performed in our present study might be useful for distinguishing between two different emotional states evoked by classical appetitive conditioning in rats.  相似文献

The ability of human subjects to discriminate direction of tactile stimulus motion on the dorsum of the hand was determined (1) in the absence and (2) in the presence of a moving stimulus delivered to a second skin site on the ipsilateral or contralateral forelimb. When the two skin sites were simultaneously contacted by stimuli moving in the same direction, directional sensitivity was typically below that predicted for a hypothetical subject who could independently process the information provided at each of the two skin sites. Even when the stimulus delivered to a second site was deliberately ignored, it could still alter a subject's perception of stimulus direction on the dorsal hand. Moreover, its influence was greatest whenever it moved in a direction opposite to that of the attended stimulus. Whenever the two moving stimuli were delivered nonsimultaneously to two skin sites, directional sensitivity rarely matched the levels predicted for a hypothetical subject who could independently process the information provided at each site. This, in part, resulted from the subjects' utilization of "long-range" cues provided by the temporal order of stimulation. Subjects frequently failed to distinguish these cues from the sensation of stimulus direction provided at each skin site.  相似文献

Physical fitness has salutary psychological and physical effects in older adults by promoting neuroplasticity and adaptation to stress. In aging, however, the effects of fitness on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis are mixed. We investigated the association between cardiorespiratory fitness and HPA activity in healthy elderly men (n = 22, mean age 68 y; smokers, obese subjects, those taking drugs or reporting recent stressful events were excluded), by measuring in saliva: i) daily pattern of cortisol secretion (6 samples: 30’ post-awakening, and at 12.00, 15.00, 18.00, 21.00, 24.00 h); and ii) the cortisol response to a mental challenge. Cardiorespiratory fitness (VO2max) was estimated using the Rockport Walking Test and the participants were assigned to high-fit (HF, ≥60°, n = 10) and low-fit (LF, ≤35°, n = 12) groups according to age-specific percentiles of VO2max distribution in the general population. At all daytimes, basal cortisol levels were lower in the HF than the LF group, most notably in the evening and midnight samples, with a significant main effect of physical fitness for cortisol levels overall; the area-under-the-curve for total daily cortisol output was significantly smaller in the HF group. Among the subjects who responded to mental stress (baseline-to-peak increment >1.5 nmol/L; n = 13, 5 LF, 8 HF), the amplitude of cortisol response and the steepness of recovery decline displayed an increasing trend in the HF subjects, although between-group differences failed to reach the threshold for significance. In conclusion, cardiorespiratory fitness in healthy aging men is negatively correlated with daily cortisol output and contributes to buffering the HPA dysregulation that occurs with advancing age, thus possibly playing a beneficial role in contrasting age-related cognitive and physical decline.  相似文献

Summary Development of adipose tissue in five depots was investigated in mice selected for high or low 12-week epididymal fat pad weight as a percentage of body weight (HF and LF lines), or high or low 12-week hind carcass weight as a percentage of body weight (HL and LL lines). An unselected control line (RC) was maintained. Hind carcass (HC) and fat pads from subcutaneous hindlimb, subcutaneous forelimb, gonads, kidneys and mesentery were dissected and weighed at 4, 6, 9, 12 or 15 weeks of age. Generally, body weight (BW), daily gain (DG), feed intake (FI), feed efficiency (FE) and feed intake/metabolic body weight (FC) were higher (P0.05) in HF than in LF, and in LL than in HL. HF had more fat (as a percentage of BW) than LF in all depots (P-0.01), and asymmetry (P0.01) was detected for gonadal fat. LL consistently had a higher (P0.01) fat percentage than HL, and asymmetry (P0.01) was observed for perirenal fat. At age of selection, ranking of fat depot weights as a percentage of total fat depot weight was not changed by selection; however, gonadal fat accounted for more of the total fat in HF and LL compared with RC, while the opposite was found in LF and HL. HC percentage was higher (P0.01) in HL than LL, and higher (P0.01) in LF than HF. Growth rate of each fat depot relative to BW was not affected by selection. These results demonstrated that selection for proportion of fat in one depot or for HC percentage changed fat percentage in other depots. However, the rate of fat deposition in each depot relative to body weight gain was not altered.  相似文献

To test the hypothesis that fetal lambs are able to maintain oxygen delivery to myocardial, brain and adrenal tissues during reduction in uterine blood flow to 25% of control, we performed experiments on five ewes and their fetuses. A snare occluder was placed around the maternal common hypogastric artery and catheters were placed for measurement of blood pressures, flows, blood gas tensions, pH and oxygen content. After a five day recovery period, control measurements were made. The snare occluder was then closed until the artery was fully occluded. The arterial occlusion caused uteroplacental blood flow to fall to 32 +/- 4% and maternal placental blood flow to fall to 25 +/- 3% of control values. This level of asphyxia was maintained for 19 +/- 3 minutes, when maternal and fetal blood flows were measured again. In response to occlusion, fetal ascending aortic PO2 fell from 21 +/- 2 (SEM) to 13 +/- 2 mmHg (P less than or equal to 0.01), oxygen content from 4.3 +/- 0.3 to 1.4 +/- 0.2 mM (P less than or equal to 0.01) and pH from 7.37 +/- 0.01 to 7.21 +/- 0.05 (P less than or equal to 0.01). PCO2 rose from 48 +/- 1 to 62 +/- 3 mmHg (P less than or equal to 0.01). Fetal arterial blood pressure increased from 51 +/- 3 to 61 +/- 3 mmHg (P less than or equal to 0.001) and heart rate decreased from 172 +/- 10 to 104 +/- 4 beats.min-1 (P less than or equal to 0.01). Emotive faces elicit neural responses even when they are not consciously perceived. We used faces hybridized from spatial frequency-filtered individual stimuli to study processing of facial emotion. Employing event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), we show enhanced fusiform cortex responses to hybrid faces containing fearful expressions when such emotional cues are present in the low-spatial frequency (LSF) range. Critically, this effect is independent of whether subjects use LSF or high-spatial frequency (HSF) information to make gender judgments on the hybridized faces. The magnitude of this fusiform enhancement predicts behavioral slowing in response times when participants report HSF information of the hybrid stimulus in the presence of fear in the unreported LSF components. Thus, emotional modulation of a face-responsive region of fusiform is driven by the low-frequency components of the stimulus, an effect independent of subjects' reported perception but evident in an incidental measure of behavioral performance.  相似文献

Clostridium formicoaceticum homofermentatively converts lactate to acetate at 37 degrees C and pH 6.6-9.6. However, this fermentation is strongly inhibited by acetic acid at acidic pH. The specific growth rate of this organism decreased from a maximum at pH 7.6 to zero at pH 6.6. This inhibition effect was found to be attributed to both H(+) and undissociated acetic acid. At pH values below 7.6, the H(+) inhibited the fermentation following non-competitive inhibition kinetics. The acetic acid inhibition was found to be stronger at a lower medium pH. At pH 6.45-6.8, cell growth was found to be primarily limited by a maximum undissociated acetic acid concentration of 0.358 g/L (6mM). This indicates that the undissociated acid, not the dissociated acid, is the major acid inhibitor. At pH 7.6 or higher, this organism could tolerate acetate concentrations of higher than 0.8M, but salt (Na(+)) became a strong inhibitor at concentrations of higher than 0.4M. Acetic acid inhibition also can be represented by noncompetitive inhibition kinetics. A mathematical model for this homoacetic fermentation was also developed. This model can be used to simulate batch fermentation at any pH between 6.9 and 7.6.  相似文献

Growth of two pathogenic and one environmental serotype of Yersinia enterocolitica under acidic conditions and at 4 and 25°C was investigated. At both temperatures the maximum growth inhibitory pH depended on the acidulant used and was in the order acetic > lactic > citric > sulphuric. At the lower temperature the maximum growth inhibitory pH was 0.3-0.5 pH units higher than at 25°C. No difference was observed between the behaviour of pathogenic and environmental serotypes in this respect. Measurement of growth at a number of sub-optimal temperatures and pH values showed that the variation of growth rate with temperature could be represented by a square root plot. The effect of different pH values could be incorporated into the model by replacing the regression coefficient b by its relationship with pH. Values of maximum growth inhibitory pH derived from the model were in good agreement with experimental values with the exception of acetic acid.  相似文献

The study investigated the heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) before, during, and after stretching exercises performed by subjects with low flexibility levels. Ten men (age: 23 ± 2 years; weight: 82 ± 13 kg; height: 177 ± 5 cm; sit-and-reach: 23 ± 4 cm) had the HR and HRV assessed during 30 minutes at rest, during 3 stretching exercises for the trunk and hamstrings (3 sets of 30 seconds at maximum range of motion), and after 30 minutes postexercise. The HRV was analyzed in the time ('SD of normal NN intervals' [SDNN], 'root mean of the squared sum of successive differences' [RMSSD], 'number of pairs of adjacent RR intervals differing by >50 milliseconds divided by the total of all RR intervals' [PNN50]) and frequency domains ('low-frequency component' [LF], 'high-frequency component' [HF], LF/HF ratio). The HR and SDNN increased during exercise (p < 0.03) and decreased in the postexercise period (p = 0.02). The RMSSD decreased during stretching (p = 0.03) and increased along recovery (p = 0.03). At the end of recovery, HR was lower (p = 0.01), SDNN was higher (p = 0.02), and PNN50 was similar (p = 0.42) to pre-exercise values. The LF increased (p = 0.02) and HF decreased (p = 0.01) while stretching, but after recovery, their values were similar to pre-exercise (p = 0.09 and p = 0.3, respectively). The LF/HF ratio increased during exercise (p = 0.02) and declined during recovery (p = 0.02), albeit remaining higher than at rest (p = 0.03). In conclusion, the parasympathetic activity rapidly increased after stretching, whereas the sympathetic activity increased during exercise and had a slower postexercise reduction. Stretching sessions including multiple exercises and sets acutely changed the sympathovagal balance in subjects with low flexibility, especially enhancing the postexercise vagal modulation.  相似文献
