Summary Effect of pretreatment of root of maize seedlings with gibberellic acid, maleic hydrazide and urea was investigated. Gibberellic acid at 1 ppm stimulated the growth of fungi, bacteria, and actinomycetes in the rhizosphere region of maize seedlings while at 5 ppm concentration population of bacteria and actinomycetes were suppressed. Maleic hydrazide treatment stimulated all the three groups at 5 ppm concentration but at 1 ppm there was increase in population of only fungi and actinomycetes. Urea stimulated the growth of fungi, bacteria, and actinomycetes. The order of predominance of different groups also changed with treatments. It was fungi > bacteria > actinomycetes in case of gibberellic acid at 1 ppm and 5 ppm and maleic hydrazide at 1 ppm; and bacteria > fungi > actinomycetes in case of maleic hydrazide at 5 ppm, urea at 0.1M and in control.  相似文献

A study was performed on the effect of various concentrations of IAA, 2,3,6-triiodobenzoic acid, and maleic hydrazide, supplied to Richter’s nutrient solution, on growth of pea plants in water cultures. After a 18-day cultivation growth was evaluated and in the plants gathered the content of total N, P, K, and Ca was estimated. Growth of experimental plants (as evaluated from fresh and dry weight) was affected by all three regulators in dependence on the concentration used. It was stimulated by lower concentrations and inhibited by higher, the production of both fresh and dry weight of the root system being stimulated by all IAA concentrations used. The ratio of root dry weight to that of the entire plant was markedly increased after application of IAA and 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid, whereas when applying maleic hydrazide it was only slightly increased in comparison with control. Stimulation or inhibition of growth induced by IAA treatment was accompanied by an accordingly increased or decreased accumulation of N, P, K, and Ca. Thus their utilization did not change in comparison with control. On the other hand, both inhibitory and stimulatory effects of 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid and maleic hydrazide on growth were associated with a relatively lower accumulation of the elements in question, resulting in an increased utilization. The distribution index of N, P, K, and Ca decreased with increasing concentrations of IAA, 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid and maleic hydrazide. Only the highest 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid and maleic hydrazide concentrations used brought about a more marked increase in the distribution index of potassium, simultaneously with a marked decrease in the distribution index of calcium.  相似文献

Summary The toxicity of zinc to a population of Hormidium rivulare isolated from an acid mine drainage was shown to be least at the optimum pH range for the growth of the alga, pH 3.5–4.0; toxicity increases markedly at higher pH values. Calcium clearly antagonizes the toxicity of zinc. Populations of H. rivulare isolated from higher pH values and which are resistant to zinc, are also especially resistant to low pH values, although they are unlikely ever to encounter such values naturally. Nevertheless raised levels of calcium bring about only a slight improvement of growth at very low pH values in the absence of zinc, so the mechanisms of pH and zinc tolerance are not the same. Although the acid stream population grows in the field in an environment with rather similar levels of zinc and copper, copper is less toxic than zinc at pH 3.5, but much more toxic than zinc at pH 6.0.  相似文献

Previously topped American sycamore (Platanus occidentalis L.), cottonwood (Populus deltoides Bartr. ex Marsh), water oak (Quercus nigra L.), and bigleaf maple (Acer macrophyllum Pursh) trees were injected with aqueous solutions of maleic hydrazide or dikegulac-sodium in April-June, 1979 at various locations around the United States. Measurements made later in the autumn showed that dikegulac-sodium reduced sprout regrowth in all four species, whereas maleic hydrazide was only effective in controlling regrowth of American sycamore and cottonwood. The effects of dikegulac persisted through the second growing season. Significant variability was observed among treated trees and must be reduced in order to achieve consistent growth responses from an application of growth retardants.This paper reports the results of research only. Tobacco plants (Nicotiana tabacum cv. Burley 21) were cultured in the greenhouse to the 18-leaf stage. The apical meristem was removed and subsequent axillary bud growth was removed by hand (controls) or axillary bud development was inhibited by application of maleic hydrazide. Compared with the controls, maleic hydrazide treated plants had a decreased stem diameter and stem weight, but an increased leaf weight and leaf weight/area. Plant height and leaf area were the same for both treatments. Maleic hydrazide inhibited translocation of 14C from a single leaf exposed to 14CO2. Respiration was greater than in the controls three days after application of maleic hydrazide, but 9 and 14 days after application there were no differences in respiration between the two treatments. Maleic hydrazide did not affect photosynthetic activity.  相似文献

The susceptibility of Botrytis cinerea to copper sulphate in liquid media increased when the volume, and therefore the depth, of the medium in culture bottles exceeded certain values; when the volume was 40 ml. the maximum concentration allowing growth was 300 p.p.m.
By growing mycelium in media containing progressively higher concentrations of copper sulphate a strain was produced which grew at a concentration of 750 p.p.m.
In high concentrations of copper sulphate growth always started at the edge of the liquid, and inocula grew only if they were placed in this position.
In germination tests spores from the resistant strain were more resistant to copper sulphate than were spores of the parent strain.
The resistance of mycelium, and to a lesser extent of spores, was retained after growth of the resistant strain for six months in fungicide-free media.
Spore and mycelial inocula grew in much higher concentrations of copper sulphate when nutrient media were solidified with agar.
The strain resistant in liquid media was no more resistant than the parent strain on agar media.
The resistance of the fungus was not increased after growth for long periods on agar containing high concentrations of copper sulphate. The resistance of the strain resistant in liquid media was not lost after growth on agar media for 3 months.
Attempts to produce strains more resistant than the parent to mercuric chloride were unsuccessful.
The results obtained with phenyl-mercuric acetate were essentially similar to those obtained with copper sulphate, but relatively much more resistant strains were produced.  相似文献

Brassinosteroids are of universal occurrence in plants. They have been reported to affect plant growth and development through a spectrum of physiological responses. Recently they are reported to confer resistance in plants against a number of biotic and abiotic stresses. In the present study, a brassinosteroid was isolated from Aegle marmelos Correa. (Rutaceae) which was characterized to be 24-epibrassinolide (EBL) using various spectroscopic techniques (TLC and ESI-MS analysis). It was evaluated for the antigenotoxicity against maleic hydrazide (MH) induced genotoxicity in Allium cepa chromosomal aberration assay. It was shown that the percentage of chromosomal aberrations induced by maleic hydrazide (0.01%) declined significantly with 24-epibrassinolide treatment. EBL (10−7 M) proved to be the most effective concentration with 91.8% inhibition. This is the first report on the isolation of 24-epibrassinolide from Aegle marmelos and its antigenotoxic effects against MH employing Allium cepa chromosomal aberration assay.  相似文献

The ability of the freshwater alga, Chlorella kessleri, to maintain a carbon concentrating mechanism when grown at acid pH was investigated. The alga grows over the pH range 4.0–9.0 and was found to take up bicarbonate and CO2 actively when grown at pH 6.0. However, when grown at acid pH (below 5.5), it does not have active CO2 uptake. The acidotolerant species maintained an internal pH of 6.1–7.5 over the external pH range 4.5–7.5, thus the pH difference between the cell interior and the external medium was large enough to allow for the diffusive uptake of CO2 at acid external pH. Mass spectrometric monitoring of O2 and CO2 fluxes by suspensions of C. kessleri, grown at acid pH, and maintained at pH 7.5 showed that the rates of O2 evolution did not exceed those of CO2 uptake. The final CO2 compensation concentrations of 14.0–17.7 µM reached by photosynthetic cells were above the CO2 equilibrium concentration in the external medium, indicating a lack of active CO2 uptake at acid pH. Chlorella kessleri accumulated CO2 with internal concentrations that were 9.9, 18.7 and 22.7‐fold that of the external medium for cells grown, respectively, at pH 4.5, 5.0 and 5.5. The ability of C. kessleri cells to accumulate high intracellular concentrations of inorganic carbon at acid pH would provide a sufficiently high concentration of CO2 at the active site of Rubisco thus allowing the alga to maintain growth rates similar to those at alkaline pH.  相似文献

Head hair concentrations of zinc, copper, manganese, and iron from a total of 418 subjects (154 male and 264 female) aged between 6 mo and 20 yr were measured mainly with flameless atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Only zinc analysis of a part of the female samples (n=140) were analyzed with inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. The two analytical methods showed close agreement. The mean concentration of copper and manganese were significantly higher in male subjects than in female subjects. The trace element concentrations in hair varied with the subject’s age. Zinc concentration in hair decreased from 6 mo to 14 yr in the male subjects and decreased from 6 mo to 12 yr in the female subjects. Then, the concentrations increased gradually to 20 yr in the both sexes. Age-dependent variations of copper and manganese concentrations in hair showed similar trends to those of zinc. The results of this study suggest that a higher concentration in the diet of these trace elements may be required for growing children, especially in the period of adolescence.  相似文献

Concentrations of Fe, Pb, Cu, Zn and Cd were determined during one season in the red alga Gracilaria verrucosa, sediment and seawater from the Thermaikos Gulf, Greece. This region has been subject to change due to increases in industrial and domestic activities. The relative abundance of metals in G. verrucosa and seawater decreased in the order: Fe>Zn>Pb>Cu>Cd and in the sediment: Pb>Fe>Zn>Cu>Cd. Cadmium concentration in the alga correlated positively with that in seawater. There was positive correlation between Fe concentrations in the alga and those of the Zn and Cu. The concentrations of metals in the alga showed no significant differences between the stations. Lead, Zn and Cu concentrations in the alga were slightly higher at Biamyl, whereas Cd was higher at Perea and Fe at Nea Krini. Seasonal variation of metal concentrations in the alga was significant for Cd and Fe. Copper and Fe increased from winter to summer, whereas Cd was the opposite. Zinc concentrations were minimum and Pb concentrations were maximum during spring. These variations are discussed in relation to tissue age, life cycle, ambient concentrations of metals and other environmental conditions. Cd and Pb concentrations inG. verrucosa in the Thermaikos Gulf were higher and those of Cu and Zn were lower than in other species of the genus. Flocculation of three freshwater algae, Spirulina,Oscillatoria and Chlorella, and onebrackish alga, Synechocystis, using chitosan was studiedinthe pH range 4 to 9, and chlorophyll-a concentrations inthe range 80 to 800 mg m–3, which produces aturbidity of 10 to 100 nephelometric turbidity units (NTU) in water. Chitosanreduced the algal content effectively by flocculation and settling. Theflocculation efficiency is very sensitive to pH, and reached a maximum at pH7.0for the freshwater species, but lower for the marine species. The optimalchitosan concentration that is required to effect maximum flocculation dependedon the concentration of alga. Flocculation and settling were faster whenconcentrations of chitosan higher than optimal are used. The settled algalcellsare intact and live, but will not be redispersed by mechanical agitation. Thede-algated water may be reused to produce fresh cultures of algae.  相似文献

The concentration of cyclic adenosine 3',5'-monophosphate (c-AMP) in Escherichia coli growing on different sources of carbon was studied. Cultures utilizing a source of carbon that supported growth relatively poorly had consistently higher concentrations of c-AMP than did cultures utilizing sugars that supported rapid growth. This relationship was also observed in strains defective in c-AMP phosphodiesterase and simultaneously resistant to catabolite repression; in such strains the c-AMP concentration was slightly higher for several sources of carbon tested. Cultures continued to synthesize c-AMP and secreted it into the medium, under conditions that brought about an inhibition of the intracellular accumulation of the cyclic nucleotide. Transient repression of the synthesis of beta-galactosidase was not associated with an abrupt decrease in the cellular concentration of c-AMP.  相似文献

It was found that ryegrass seed treatment by maleic hydrazide leads to deep and different transformation of basic structural components of leaf anatomy. The results of this transformation depend on leaf development stage and increase with growth of leaf number. The prolongation of treatment is more efficient than increasing of drug concentration and may suppress the development of leaves and their vascular system. The connection between leaf anatomy transformation after maleic hydrazide treatment and genome function was discussed.  相似文献

Tissue cultures of Nicotiana tabacum, Nicotiana suaveolens and Nicotiana suaveolens × Nicotiana langsdorffii were cultured in the presence of the growth inhibitors maleic hydrazide and 6-azauracil as well as 6-azauridine. Inhibition of growth was complete at 10−4 molar concentrations in all 3 genotypes of cells. The inhibition due to 6-azauracil could be completely relieved with uridine and partially relieved with uracil. The effect with maleic hydrazide was irreversible, a fact which indicates a different mechanism or level of inhibition. This study supports the concept that derivatives of 6-azauracil inhibit the synthesis of uridine derivatives required for ribose nucleic acid synthesis and growth.  相似文献

The effect of deleterious concentrations of ionic Cu on the growth of Chlorella pyrenoidosa has been studied. An earlier paper showed a distinct effect of the same concentrations on the photosynthesis of the alga. Several substances, e.g. Fe and citric acid counteract the effect of Cu. In media ordinarily used for growing unicellular algae the influence of Cu is relatively slight due to the extraordinarily large concentrations. of Fe. At a concentration of 6 μg/I Fe – near to that in nature –even one μg/I Cu significantly decreases the growth during the first 24 hours. Cu is adsorbed to the negative charges on micelles of Fe(OH)3 created in the alkaline medium. Citric acid is readily assimilated by Chlorella and thus counteracts the influence of Cu for only relatively short period. Cell concentration is of decisive importance for the deleterious influence of Cu on growth. The effect of a certain Cu concentration stops at a certain concentration of of the algae regardless of whether the experiment is started at this cell concentration or this concentration is attained during the experiment. This is due to the binding of Cu by the organic matter of cell walls and slime envelopes. H+ ions compete with Cu both when combining with the organic matter in the cell walls and when occupying the active sites of the cell membranes. The latter explains the fact that the influence of Cu is only slight at pH 5 compared with that at pH 8. At a Cu-concentration where no growth of algae can take place, the algae are by no means killed. After being transferred to an ordinary medium the algae start to grow again. The influence of Cu depends on the division stage of the algae. If the initial steps of cell division have taken place, the cell continues to divide.  相似文献

Acide phosphatase activity in relation to ccc, maleic hydrazide and colchicine — The acid phosphatase at pH 5 were determined on homogenates of roots and seedlings obtained from barley seeds germinated in a solution of CCC, maleic hydrazide, colchicine and water.

The acid phosphatase is strongly stimulated from colchicine, CCC and maleic hydrazide, but the minimum time of treatment to obtain the above activation is different.

It is discussed if the obtained results can be put in relation to the ATP level required for mitosis and to the auxin's properties to intervene on the phosphor's transfer.  相似文献

The optimum concentration of the plant hormone, indole-3-butyric acid (IBA), was determined for the stimulation of Coelomomyces psorophorae resistant sporangia (RS) germination. The effects of continuous incubation of RS in 19 hormones and related substances were assessed. IBA strongly enhanced germination; whereas, maleic acid hydrazide and β-(-2-furyl)acrylic acid inhibited germination.  相似文献

Summary The alga Phormidium mucicola was found quite sensitive to antibiotics. Several strains resistant to streptomycin and penicillin were isolated following single and several contacts of antibiotics respectively. The resistant character remained stable during subcultures in drug-free medium. However, to isolate a fully stable and resistant strain of a concentration of penicillin two additional exposures to the same dose were required, unless otherwise, resistance was gradually lost during subcultures in penicillin-free media. This observation has been attributed to the heterogeneous nature of the resistant clones. Neither streptomycin nor penicillin resistant strains revealed cross-resistance to ultraviolet (u.v.) or to themselves.  相似文献
