This study determined the effects of endurance or resistance exercise training on maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) and the cardiovascular responses to exercise of 70- to 79-yr-old men and women. Healthy untrained subjects were randomly assigned to a control group (n = 12) or to an endurance (n = 16) or resistance training group (n = 19). Training consisted of three sessions per week for 26 wk. Resistance training consisted of one set of 8-12 repetitions on 10 Nautilus machines. Endurance training consisted of 40 min at 50-70% VO2max and at 75-85% VO2max for the first and last 13 wk of training, respectively. The endurance training group increased its VO2max by 16% during the first 13 wk of training and by a total of 22% after 26 wk of training; this group also increased its maximal O2 pulse, systolic blood pressure, and ventilation, and decreased its heart rate and perceived exertion during submaximal exercise. The resistance training group did not elicit significant changes in VO2max or in other maximal or submaximal cardiovascular responses despite eliciting 9 and 18% increases in lower and upper body strength, respectively. Thus healthy men and women in their 70s can respond to prolonged endurance exercise training with adaptations similar to those of younger individuals. Resistance training in older individuals has no effect on cardiovascular responses to submaximal or maximal treadmill exercise.  相似文献

Maximal and submaximal metabolic and cardiovascular measures and work capacity were studied in control (n = 7) and experimental (n = 9) subjects (S's) during arm work prior to and following 10 wk of interval arm training. These measures were oxygen uptake (VO2), minute ventilation (VE), heart rate (HR), respiratory exchange ratio (R), cardiac output (Q), stroke volume (SV), and arteriovenous oxygen difference ((a--v)O2 diff). In addition, maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) was measured in both groups during treadmill running. Experimental S's showed significant increases (P less than 0.01) in peak VO2 (438 ml.min-1), max VE (17.7 l.min-1), max (a--v)O2 diff (20.8 ml.l-1), and work time (9.2 min) during arm ergometry, while maximum values of Q, SV, HR, and R remained unchanged. In addition, submaximal heart rates were significantly lower during arm ergometry after training. VO2max during treadmill running remained essentially unchanged. No changes in metabolic and physiological measures were noted for the controls after the 10-wk training period. The results support the concept of training specificity for VO2max, and indicate that the improvement in peak VO2 in arm ergometry reflects enhanced oxygen utilization due to an expanded (a--v)O2 diff.  相似文献

Ten foxhounds were studied during maximal and submaximal exercise on a motor-driven treadmill before and after 8-12 wk of training. Training consisted of working at 80% of maximal heart rate 1 h/day, 5 days/wk. Maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) increased 28% from 113.7 +/- 5.5 to 146.1 +/- 5.4 ml O2 X min-1 X kg-1, pre- to posttraining. This increase in VO2max was due primarily to a 27% increase in maximal cardiac output, since maximal arteriovenous O2 difference increased only 4% above pretraining values. Mean arterial pressure during maximal exercise did not change from pre- to posttraining, with the result that calculated systemic vascular resistance (SVR) decreased 20%. There were no training-induced changes in O2 consumption, cardiac output, arteriovenous O2 difference, mean arterial pressure, or SVR at any level of submaximal exercise. However, if post- and pretraining values are compared, heart rate was lower and stroke volume was greater at any level of submaximal exercise. Venous lactate concentrations during a given level of submaximal exercise were significantly lower during posttraining compared with pretraining, but venous lactate concentrations during maximal exercise did not change as a result of exercise training. These results indicate that a program of endurance training will produce a significant increase in VO2max in the foxhound. This increase in VO2max is similar to that reported previously for humans and rats but is derived primarily from central (stroke volume) changes rather than a combination of central and peripheral (O2 extraction) changes.  相似文献

Endurance training of older men: responses to submaximal exercise.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
The purpose of this study was to quantify the exercise response of older subjects on a time-to-fatigue (TTF) submaximal performance test before and after a training program. Eight older men (67.4 +/- 4.8 yr) performed two maximal treadmill tests to determine maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) and ventilation threshold (TVE) and a constant-load submaximal exercise treadmill test that required an oxygen uptake (VO2) between TVE and VO2max. The submaximal test, performed at the same absolute work rate before and after the training program, was performed to volitional fatigue to measure endurance time. The men trained under supervision at an individualized pace representing approximately 70% of VO2max (80% maximum heart rate) for 1 h, four times per week for 9 wk. Significant increases were demonstrated for VO2max (ml.kg-1.min-1; 10.6%); maximal ventilation (VE, l/min; 11.6%), and TVE (l/min; 9.8%). Weight decreased 2.1%. Performance time on the TTF test increased by 180% (7.3 +/- 3.0 to 20.4 +/- 13.5 min). The similar end points for VO2, VE, and heart rate during the TTF and maximal treadmill tests established that the TTF test was stopped because of physiological limitations. The increase in performance time among the subjects was significantly correlated with improvements in VO2max and TVE, with the submaximal work rate representing a VO2 above TVE by 88% of the difference between TVE and VO2max pretraining and 73% of this difference on posttraining values.  相似文献

Seventeen women (mean age 31 yr) participated in a training program divided into an initial 9-wk period and a subsequent 52-wk period, during which time 6 continued to exercise and the remainder detrained. Improvements in VO2max were significant (+34%) during the initial 9 wk and small (+5%) for the final 52 wk. Four women who stopped training showed a decrease in VO2max (-10%) during the last phase. During the initial 9 wk, central adaptation was important, with SV showing an increase of 28% at 80% VO2max. Peripheral adaptation (a-v O2 difference) was unchanged. Subjects who trained an additional 52 wk showed a slight drop in SV at submaximal work loads from the initial increase following the first 9 wk. When compared with the initial test the change at 9 wk in peripheral adaptation was a small and nonsignificant rise, followed by a significant increase at 61 wk. Women who are very unfit initially (predicted VO2max of 28 ml/kg-min), apparently adapt to the initial training with a central change followed by a much stronger peripheral adaptation during a longer training program.  相似文献

Powercranks use a specially designed clutch to promote independent pedal work by each leg during cycling. We examined the effects of 6 wk of training on cyclists using Powercranks (n=6) or normal cranks (n=6) on maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max) and anaerobic threshold (AT) during a graded exercise test (GXT), and heart rate (HR), oxygen consumption (VO2), respiratory exchange ration (RER), and gross efficiency (GE) during a 1-hour submaximal ride at a constant load. Subjects trained at 70% of VO2max for 1 h.d(-1), 3 d.wk(-1), for 6 weeks. The GXT and 1-hour submaximal ride were performed using normal cranks pretraining and posttraining. The 1-hour submaximal ride was performed at an intensity equal to approximately 69% of pretraining VO2max with VO2, RER, GE, and HR determined at 15-minute intervals during the ride. No differences were observed between or within groups for VO2max or AT during the GXT. The Powercranks group had significantly higher GE values than the normal cranks group (23.6 +/- 1.3% versus 21.3 +/- 1.7%, and 23.9 +/- 1.4% versus 21.0 +/- 1.9% at 45 and 60 min, respectively), and significantly lower HR at 30, 45, and 60 minutes and VO2 at 45 and 60 minutes during the 1-hour submaximal ride posttraining. It appears that 6 weeks of training with Powercranks induced physiological adaptations that reduced energy expenditure during a 1-hour submaximal ride.  相似文献

To determine the effect of posture on maximal O2 uptake (VO2 max) and other cardiorespiratory adaptations to exercise training, 16 male subjects were trained using high-intensity interval and prolonged continuous cycling in either the supine or upright posture 40 min/day 4 days/wk for 8 wk and 7 male subjects served as non-training controls. VO2 max measured during upright cycling and supine cycling, respectively, increased significantly (P less than 0.05) by 16.1 +/- 3.4 and 22.9 +/- 3.4% in the supine training group (STG) and by 14.6 +/- 2.0 and 6.0 +/- 2.0% in the upright training group (UTG). The increase in VO2 max measured during supine cycling was significantly greater (P less than 0.05) in the STG than in the UTG. The increase in VO2 max in the UTG was significantly greater (P less than 0.05) when measured during upright exercise than during supine exercise. However, there was no significant difference in posture-specific VO2 max adaptations in the STG. A postural specificity was also evident in other maximal cardiorespiratory variables (ventilation, CO2 production, and respiratory exchange ratio). In the UTG, maximal heart rate decreased significantly (P less than 0.05) only during supine cycling; there was no significant difference in maximal heart rate after training in the STG. We conclude that posture affects maximal cardiorespiratory adaptations to cycle training. Additionally, supine training is more effective than upright training in increasing maximal cardiorespiratory responses measured during supine exercise, and the effects of supine training generalize to the upright posture to a greater extent than the effects of upright training generalize to the supine posture.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

It has been suggested that genetic variation in the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene is associated with physical performance. We studied the association between the ACE insertion (I)/deletion (D) polymorphism and several fitness phenotypes measured before and after 20 wk of a standardized endurance training program in sedentary Caucasian (n = 476) and black (n = 248) subjects. Phenotypes measured were oxygen uptake (VO(2)), work rate, heart rate, minute ventilation, tidal volume, and blood lactate levels during maximal and submaximal [50 W and at 60 and 80% of maximal VO(2) (VO(2 max))] exercise and stroke volume and cardiac output during submaximal exercise (50 W and at 60% VO(2 max)). The ACE ID polymorphism was typed with the three-primer PCR method. Out of 216 association tests performed on 54 phenotypes in 4 groups of participants, only 11 showed significant (P values from 0.042 to 0. 0001) associations with the ACE ID polymorphism. In contrast to previous claims, in Caucasian offspring, the DD homozygotes showed a 14-38% greater increase with training in VO(2 max), VO(2) at 80% of VO(2 max), and all work rate phenotypes and a 36% greater decrease in heart rate at 50 W than did the II homozygotes. No associations were evident in Caucasian parents or black parents or offspring. Thus these data do not support the hypothesis that the ACE ID polymorphism plays a major role in cardiorespiratory endurance.  相似文献

Maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) and left ventricular function decrease with age. Endurance exercise training of sufficient intensity, frequency, and duration increases VO2max in the elderly. The mechanisms underlying the increased VO2max in the elderly are enhanced O2 extraction of trained muscle during maximal exercise leading to a wider arteriovenous O2 difference, and higher cardiac output in the trained state. However, increased cardiac output during true maximal exercise has not been documented in elderly subjects. Endurance exercise training results in a lower heart rate and rate pressure product during submaximal exercise at a given intensity. However, no improvement in left ventricular function has been reported in the elderly after exercise training. Highly trained master athletes exhibit proportional increases in the left ventricular end-diastolic dimension and wall thickness suggestive of volume-overload hypertrophy compared with age-matched sedentary controls. The magnitude of left ventricular enlargement is similar to that in young athletes. The failure of exercise training to alter the age-related deterioration of left ventricular function in the elderly may reflect an insufficient training stimulus rather than the inability of the heart to adapt to training in elderly subjects.  相似文献

The purposes of the present study were to characterize the histochemical and enzymatic profiles of various hindlimb skeletal muscles, as well as to determine maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) and respiratory exchange ratios (R) during steady-state exercise in the obese Zucker rat. The changes that occurred in these parameters in response to a 6-wk training program were then assessed. Obese rats were randomly assigned to a sedentary or training group. Lean littermates served as a second control. Training consisted of treadmill running at 18 m/min up an 8% grade, 1.5 h/day, 5 day/wk for 6 wk. During week 6, VO2max and R during a steady-state run (74% max) were determined. After 2 days of inactivity, hindlimb muscles were excised, stained for fiber type and capillaries, and assayed for hexokinase, citrate synthase, cytochrome oxidase, and beta-hydroxyacetyl-CoA dehydrogenase. The obese sedentary rats demonstrated greater oxidative enzyme activities per gram of muscle tissue than their lean littermates, greater R values during submaximal exercise of the same relative intensity, and greater absolute VO2max values. Training resulted in a 20-56% increase in oxidative enzymes, a 10% increase in VO2max, and an increase in capillary density in the soleus and plantaris. There was no alteration in R values during exercise at 74% VO2max or in fiber type composition in response to exercise training. Results suggest that the muscle of the obese Zucker rat manifests a greater oxidative capacity than the muscle of its lean littermates. The apparent inability of the obese rat to increase its use of fat during submaximal exercise of the same relative intensity in response to training remains to be elucidated.  相似文献

Before the start and after 4, 8, and 12 wk of a treadmill training program male rats were randomly selected and tested for running performance, maximum O2 consumption (VO2 max), running economy (VO2 submax), and skeletal muscle oxidative capacity (QO2). Data were compared with values from untrained weight-matched control rats. Maximum running time to exhaustion increased significantly (P less than 0.01) by 4 wk and again at 12 wk (P less than 0.01). Submaximal running endurance increased by 120 (4 wk), 320 (8 wk), and 372% (12 wk) (P less than 0.01). VO2 max was increased only at 12 wk (86.0 +/- 2.7 vs. 75.5 +/- 1.9 ml O2.kg-1.min-1); VO2 submax was decreased at 4 and 8 wk but not at 12 wk. Soleus QO2 was unchanged after 4 wk of training and increased by 50% at 8 wk and by 77% at 12 wk. This study is the first to show a dissociation in both the time course and the magnitude of longitudinal changes in VO2 max, VO2 submax, QO2, and maximal and submaximal running performance. We conclude that factors other than those measured explain the improvement in running performance that resulted from endurance training in these rats.  相似文献

The hemodynamic response to maximal exercise was determined in rats that were subjected to high-intensity sprint training (HIST) and rats that served as sedentary controls. Training consisted of five 1-min bouts of treadmill running at work loads (15% grade, 97 m/min) in excess of the animals' maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) interspersed with 90 s of rest. Training was performed 6 days/wk for 6 wk. After the training regimen, all rats were acutely instrumented with catheters in the right carotid artery and right ventricle. O2 uptakes, hemodynamic parameters, arterial and mixed venous O2 concentrations, blood gases, and acid-base status were determined at rest and during submaximal and maximal exercise. Results demonstrated that VO2max of HIST rats was significantly greater than that found for sedentary control rats. This increase in VO2max was due to an increase in maximal cardiac output (Qmax), since maximal arteriovenous O2 difference was similar between trained and sedentary rats. The increase in Qmax was due to an increase in maximal stroke volume (SVmax), because maximal heart rate in trained rats was similar to that in sedentary control rats. Citrate synthase and phosphofructokinase activities measured in the white gastrocnemius, plantaris, and soleus muscles of trained and sedentary rats were similar. These results suggest that the increase in VO2max produced with HIST in rats is strongly linked to an increase in central cardiac function as indicated by an increase in Qmax and SVmax.  相似文献

Stroke volume (SV) increases above the resting level during exercise and then declines at higher intensities of exercise in sedentary subjects. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an attenuation of the decline in SV at higher exercise intensities contributes to the increase in maximal cardiac output (Qmax) that occurs in response to endurance training. We studied six men and six women, 25 +/- 1 (SE) yr old, before and after 12 wk of endurance training (3 days/wk running for 40 min, 3 days/wk interval training). Cardiac output was measured at rest and during exercise at 50 and 100% of maximal O2 uptake (Vo2max) by the C2H2-rebreathing method. VO2max was increased by 19% (from 2.7 +/- 0.2 to 3.2 +/- 0.3 l/min, P less than 0.001) in response to the training program. Qmax was increased by 12% (from 18.1 +/- 1 to 20.2 +/- 1 l/min, P less than 0.01), SV at maximal exercise was increased by 16% (from 97 +/- 6 to 113 +/- 8 ml/beat, P less than 0.001) and maximal heart rate was decreased by 3% (from 185 +/- 2 to 180 +/- 2 beats/min, P less than 0.01) after training. The calculated arteriovenous O2 content difference at maximal exercise was increased by 7% (14.4 +/- 0.4 to 15.4 +/- 0.4 ml O2/100 ml blood) after training. Before training, SV at VO2max was 9% lower than during exercise at 50% VO2max (P less than 0.05). In contrast, after training, the decline in SV between 50 and 100% VO2max was only 2% (P = NS). Furthermore, SV was significantly higher (P less than 0.01) at 50% VO2max after training than it was before. Left ventricular hypertrophy was evident, as determined by two-dimensional echocardiography at the completion of training. The results indicate that in young healthy subjects the training-induced increase in Qmax is due in part to attenuation of the decrease in SV as exercise intensity is increased.  相似文献

Eighteen male volunteers (aged 20-23 years), not involved in any sporting activities, were submitted to 13 weeks of training consisting of 30 min exercise [at 50%-75% maximal oxygen intake (VO2max)] on a cycle ergometer, performed 3 times a week. Every 4 weeks cardiac function was evaluated by measuring the systolic time intervals at rest and during submaximal cycle exercise. Stroke volume (SV), heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP) responses to submaximal exercise, VO2max and anaerobic threshold (AT) were also determined. Significant increases in VO2max, increases in AT and SV at the submaximal exercise intensities, as well as decreases in HR and BP were found after 4 weeks of training. Resting systolic time intervals were not affected by training, but during the submaximal cycle exercise the values of the pre-ejection period (PEP) and isovolumic contraction time (ICT) corresponding to HR of 100 beats.min-1 were significantly lowered after 13 weeks of training, whereas PEP, ICT and total electromechanical systole corresponding to HR of 130 beats.min-1 were significantly shortened by the 4th week. The ratios of PEP:LVET (left ventricular ejection time) and ICT:LVET during submaximal exercise were significantly lowered by training starting from the 8th week. These changes might be interpreted as evidence of the training-induced enhancement of the "contractility reserve", i.e. the ability to increase heart muscle contractility with increasing exercise intensity.  相似文献

In order to determine the effect of short-term training on central adaptations, gas exchange and cardiac function were measured during a prolonged submaximal exercise challenge prior to and following 10-12 consecutive days of exercise. In addition, vascular volumes and selected haematological properties were also examined. The subjects, healthy males between the ages of 19 and 30 years of age, cycled for 2 h per day at approximately 59% of pre-training peak oxygen consumption (VO2) i.e., maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). Following the training, VO2max (l.min-1) increased (P less than 0.05) by 4.3% (3.94, 0.11 vs 4.11, 0.11; mean, SE) whereas maximal exercise ventilation (VE,max) and maximal heart rate (fc,max) were unchanged. During submaximal exercise, VO2 was unaltered by the training whereas carbon dioxide production (VE) and respiratory exchange ratio were all reduced (P less than 0.05). The altered activity pattern failed to elicit adaptations in either submaximal exercise cardiac output or arteriovenous O2 difference. fc was reduced (P less than 0.05). Plasma volume (PV) as measured by 125I human serum albumin increased by 365 ml or 11.8%, while red cell volume (RCV) as measured by 51chromium-labelled red blood cells (RBC) was unaltered. The increase in PV was accompanied by reductions (P less than 0.05) in haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration (g.100 ml-1), and RBCs (10(6) mm-3). Collectively these changes suggest only minimal adaptations in maximal oxygen transport during the early period of prolonged exercise training. We measured maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) during stationary cycling in 40 pregnant women [aged 29.2 +/- 3.9 (SD) yr, gestational age 25.9 +/- 3.3 wk]. Data from 30 of these women were used to develop an equation to predict the percent VO2max from submaximal heart rates. This equation and the submaximal VO2 were used to predict VO2max in the remaining 10 women. The accuracy of VO2max values estimated by this procedure was compared with values predicted by two popular methods: the Astrand nomogram and the VO2 vs. heart rate (VO2-HR) curve. VO2max values estimated by the derived equation method in the 10 validation subjects were only 3.7 +/- 12.2% higher than actual values (P greater than 0.05). The Astrand method overestimated VO2max by 9.0 +/- 19.4% (P greater than 0.05), whereas the VO2-HR curve method underestimated VO2max by only 1.6 +/- 10.3% in the same 10 subjects (P greater than 0.05). Both the Astrand and the VO2-HR curve methods correlated well with the actual values when all 40 subjects were considered (r = 0.77 and 0.85, respectively), but the VO2-HR curve method had a lower SE of prediction than the Astrand method (8.7 vs. 10.4%). In a comparison group of 10 nonpregnant sedentary women (29.9 +/- 4.5 yr), an equation relating %VO2max to HR nearly identical to that obtained in the pregnant women was found, suggesting that pregnancy does not alter this relationship. We conclude that extrapolating the VO2-HR curve to an estimated maximal HR is the most accurate method of predicting VO2max in pregnant women.  相似文献

The hemodynamic response to maximal exercise was determined in sedentary and trained rats with a chronic myocardial infarction (MI) produced by coronary artery ligation and in rats that underwent sham operations (SHAM). Infarct size in the MI groups of rats comprised 28-29% of the total left ventricle and resulted in both metabolic and hemodynamic changes that suggested that these animals had moderate compensated heart failure. The training regimen used in the present study produced significant increases in maximal O2 uptake (VO2max) when expressed in absolute terms (ml/min) or when normalized for body weight (ml.min-1.kg-1) and consisted of treadmill running at work loads that were equivalent to 70-80% of the animal's VO2max for a period of 60 min/day, 5 days/wk over an 8- to 10-wk interval. This training paradigm produced two major cardiocirculatory adaptations in the MI rat that had not been elicited previously when using a training paradigm of a lower intensity. First, the decrement in the maximal heart rate response to exercise (known as "chronotropic incompetence") found in the sedentary MI rat was completely reversed by endurance training. Second, the downregulation of cardiac myosin isozyme composition from the fast ATPase V1 isoform toward the slower ATPase (V2 and V3) isoforms in the MI rat was partially reversed by endurance training. This study was conducted to obtain additional information about the adaptations after 12 wk of high-fat diet (HFD) per se or HFD combined with endurance training in the rat using a two [diet: carbohydrate (CHO) or HFD] by two (training: sedentary or trained) by two (condition at death: rested or exercised) factorial design. Adaptation to prolonged HFD increases maximal O2 uptake (VO2max; 13%, P less than 0.05) and submaximal running endurance (+64%, P less than 0.05). This enhancement in exercise capacity could be attributed to 1) an increase in skeletal muscle aerobic enzyme activities (3-hydroxyacyl-CoA dehydrogenase and citrate synthase in soleus and red quadriceps) or 2) a decrease in liver glycogen breakdown in response to 1 h exercise at 80% VO2max. When training is superimposed to HFD, the most prominent finding provided by this study is that the diet-induced effects are cumulative with the well-known training effect on VO2max, exercise endurance, oxidative capacity of red muscle, and metabolic responses to exercise, with a further reduction in liver glycogen breakdown.  相似文献

To examine whether forearm vascular adaptations could occur after upright-leg exercise training, the reactive hyperemic blood flow after 10 min of forearm circulatory arrest (RHBF10) was studied. RHBF10 was examined in seven subjects before, at 2 wk, and after the completion of 4 wk of bicycle ergometer training. Maximal O2 consumption (VO2max) for leg ergometer work increased 13% (P less than 0.05) over 4 wk. Over that period of time RHBF10 in the forearm increased 50% (P less than 0.05), with a reciprocal drop in minimum vascular resistance. Resting heart rate decreased 15% (P less than 0.05) during the same period. Changes in RHBF10 and VO2max were noted after 2 wk of training. Mean arterial pressure did not change. We conclude that vascular adaptations can occur in the forearm muscle beds, even though the training regimen is designed to condition the lower extremities.  相似文献

Twenty-seven sedentary college women trained on a treadmill 3 times weekly over a 9-wk experimental period. Subjects exercised at a heart rate (HR) of either 50 or 65% of the HR reserve added to the resting HR with the duration of each session limited to the time required to elicit 1,000 beats above the resting value. Treadmill speed was adjusted automatically to maintain the prescribed exercise heart rate (EHR) within +/- 5 beats-min(-1). A comparison of the pretraining and posttraining results revealed that both training intensities caused significant increases in VO2max (1-min(-1) and ml-kg(-1)-min(-1)), V at VO2max, and O2 pulse at VO2max, and a significant decrease in VEO2 at VO2max. There was no alteration in EHR at VO2max for either intensity. For every dependent variable in which training effects were noted, the absolute gain made by the subjects training at the 65% intensity was greater than for those exercising at 50%. In no instance, however, was the difference between groups statistically significant. It was concluded that training at an EHR of either 50 or 65% of the HR reserve plus resting HR is sufficient to elicit a training response.  相似文献
