The relationship between thermal and reproductive biology is complex and poorly understood. We measured selected body temperatures (T(sel)) for the viviparous gecko Hoplodactylus maculatus. T(sel) was compared among pregnant females, nonpregnant females, and males from two sites: a cool site with biennially reproducing geckos and a warm site with annually reproducing geckos. T(sel) was measured at five times of day during three seasons and compared with microhabitat temperature (T(top)) and field body temperature (T(b)). T(sel) varied with time of day in all comparisons, and the effect of reproductive condition on T(sel) differed between sites and seasons. At both sites, when T(sel) differed between reproductive conditions, pregnant females had higher T(sel) than nonpregnant females and males. Stage of pregnancy affected the degree of elevation of T(sel). Measurements of microhabitat temperature and field T(b) showed that, even in the warmest season, geckos rarely had the opportunity to achieve T(sel) at the cool site but were able to do so at the warm site. The elevation of T(sel) with pregnancy is extreme in this species (up to 8 degrees C), which suggests that an increase in T(b) is critical to successful reproduction. Interactions between the effects of time of day, season, and reproductive condition on T(sel) must be considered in the assessment of thermoregulation in reptiles.  相似文献

On islands across the Pacific the invasion of the gecko Hemidactylusfrenatus has caused a decline in the abundance of a resident gecko, Lepidodactyluslugubris. In a previous study we demonstrated that the prevalence of the cestode Cylindrotaenia sp. is higher in the resident gecko on islands where it is sympatric with the invader than on islands where it occurs alone. In the present study we experimentally test whether the presence of the invading gecko causes an increase in parasites, particularly Cylindrotaenia sp., in the resident. In addition, we test whether the effect of the invader on parasite prevalence in the resident is mediated through an increase in corticosterone in the resident. Corticosterone is the primary glucocorticoid, or “stress” hormone in lizards, and chronic elevation in corticosterone may suppress some types of immune responses. After experimental manipulations of interspecific interactions (single vs. mixed species treatments) and intraspecific densities (high vs. low), we detected no difference in parasite prevalence or circulating corticosterone among the experimental treatments in either L. lugubris or H. frenatus. Circulating levels of corticosterone were higher in geckos␣sampled at night than geckos sampled during the day, indicating a circadian cycle in corticosterone levels in these nocturnal animals. Circulating levels of corticosterone were higher in experimental geckos than in geckos that had not been used in the experiment, and, in some groups, higher in geckos infected with cestodes than in uninfected geckos. Circulating levels of corticosterone did not differ between non-experimental H. frenatus and L. lugubris, but when geckos used in the experiment were compared, circulating levels of corticosterone were significantly higher in H.␣frenatus than in L. lugubris. Differences in both stable and labile state variables are known to affect the emergence and maintenance of consistent interindividual behavioral variation (animal personality or behavioral syndrome), especially when experienced early in life. Variation in environmental conditions experienced by gestating mothers (viz. nongenetic maternal effects) is known to have significant impact on offspring condition and behavior; yet, their effect on behavioral consistency is not clear. Here, by applying an orthogonal experimental design, we aimed to study whether increased vitamin D3 content in maternal diet during gestation (vitamin‐supplemented vs. vitamin control treatments) combined with corticosterone treatment (corticosterone‐treated vs. corticosterone control treatments) applied on freshly hatched juveniles had an effect on individual state and behavioral consistency of juvenile Carpetan rock lizards (Iberolacerta cyreni). We tested the effect of our treatments on (a) climbing speed and the following levels of behavioral variation, (b) strength of animal personality (behavioral repeatability), (c) behavioral type (individual mean behavior), and (d) behavioral predictability (within‐individual behavioral variation unrelated to environmental change). We found higher locomotor performance of juveniles from the vitamin‐supplemented group (42.4% increase), irrespective of corticosterone treatment. While activity personality was present in all treatments, shelter use personality was present only in the vitamin‐supplemented × corticosterone‐treated treatment and risk‐taking personality was present in corticosterone control treatments. Contrary to our expectations, behavioral type was not affected by our treatments, indicating that individual quality can affect behavioral strategies without affecting group‐level mean behavior. Behavioral predictability decreased in individuals with low climbing speed, which could be interpreted as a form of antipredator strategy. Our results clearly demonstrate that maternal diet and corticosterone treatment have the potential to induce or hamper between‐individual variation in different components of boldness, often in interactions.  相似文献

Corticosterone has received considerable attention as the principal hormonal mediator of allostasis or physiological stress in wild animals. More recently, it has also been implicated in the regulation of parental care in breeding birds, particularly with respect to individual variation in foraging behavior and provisioning effort. There is also evidence that prolactin can work either inversely or additively with corticosterone to achieve this. Here we test the hypothesis that endogenous corticosterone plays a key physiological role in the control of foraging behavior and parental care, using a combination of exogenous corticosterone treatment, time-depth telemetry, and physiological sampling of female macaroni penguins (Eudyptes chrysolophus) during the brood-guard period of chick rearing, while simultaneously monitoring patterns of prolactin secretion. Plasma corticosterone levels were significantly higher in females given exogenous implants relative to those receiving sham implants. Increased corticosterone levels were associated with significantly higher levels of foraging and diving activity and greater mass gain in implanted females. Elevated plasma corticosterone was also associated with an apparent fitness benefit in the form of increased chick mass. Plasma prolactin levels did not correlate with corticosterone levels at any time, nor was prolactin correlated with any measure of foraging behavior or parental care. Our results provide support for the corticosterone-adaptation hypothesis, which predicts that higher corticosterone levels support increased foraging activity and parental effort.  相似文献

The breeding season is very brief for arctic-breeding passerines, and any interruptions of parental care by aggressive interactions over territory may reduce reproductive success. We tested both the "testosterone insensitivity" and "corticosterone insensitivity" hypotheses in the arctic-breeding Gambel's white-crowned sparrow, Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii. Additionally, we tested whether simulated territorial intrusions (STIs), known to stimulate increases in luteinizing hormone (LH) and testosterone (T) in mid-latitude breeding Z. l. pugetensis, would also be effective in either the early or late phases of the brief breeding season of Z. l. gambelii. Plasma levels of T and LH were high early in the breeding season and declined as egg laying began. Exposure of free-living males to 10 min of STI significantly increased LH but not T secretion. Nonetheless, the pituitary-gonadal axis is sensitive as jugular injection of gonadotrophin-releasing hormone increased plasma T at 10 min relative to saline-challenged controls. T implants failed to increase territorial aggression following STI during incubation. These data are consistent with the T insensitivity hypothesis and contrast sharply with the response of the southerly breeding subspecies, Z. l. pugetensis, in which the territorial response to T administration is retained throughout its relatively long breeding season. However, corticosterone implants during the incubation period decreased territorial aggression during STI. This responsiveness to corticosterone is not consistent with the corticosterone insensitivity hypothesis of stress modulation. Z. l. gambelii retain sensitivity to corticosterone levels that may occur naturally in response to environmental perturbations resulting in suppression of territorial behavior.  相似文献

Abstract

High mortality and abnormal growth patterns commonly found in captive juvenile tuatara were hypothesised to be due in part to the effects of long‐term chronic stress of captivity. This study compared plasma concentrations of the reptilian adrenal steroid, corticosterone, in wild juvenile tuatara on Stephens Island, Cook Strait, and in captive juveniles of Stephens Island origin, held in New Zealand institutions, in February and August 1992. Seasonal variation in plasma concentration of corticosterone in wild juveniles in four seasons of the year was also examined. This is the first study of seasonal cycles in plasma corticosterone in a wild juvenile reptile. Plasma corticosterone concentrations were significantly higher in captive juvenile females (4.21 ± 0.27 ng/ml; mean ± SE) compared with wild juvenile females (2.44 ± 0.42 ng/ml) in February (P < 0.05), but not in August, and there was no difference in concentration between captive and wild juvenile males in either month. There was significant seasonal variation in plasma corticosterone in wild juvenile females (P < 0.05). However, there was no seasonal variation observed in wild juvenile males, and the magnitude of the variation in plasma corticosterone was low in both sexes (1.28 ± 0 ng/ml ‐4.65 ±3.41 ng/ml). Although mean plasma corticosterone was higher in captive juvenile females compared with wild juvenile females in February 1992, the value in captive females was within the range of mean plasma corticosterone concentrations observed in the seasonal study, and may be therefore due to asynchronicity of seasonal cycles, rather than stress. Further research is required; however, lack of correlation between plasma corticosterone concentrations and either growth rate or density indicate that captive juvenile tuatara in New Zealand are not suffering from pronounced chronic stress.  相似文献

We used the frog‐eyed sand gecko (Teratoscincus scincus) as a model system to evaluate the locomotor costs of tail loss, and to examine whether tailless geckos use alternative anti‐predator behavior to compensate for the costs of tail loss. Of the 16 field‐captured geckos, eight were used as experimental animals and the remaining ones as controls. Locomotor performance, activity level and anti‐predator behavior were measured for experimental geckos before and after the tail‐removing treatment. Control geckos never undergoing the tail‐removing manipulation were measured to serve as controls for the measurements taken at the same time for experimental geckos. Experimental geckos did not differ from controls in activity level before they underwent the tail‐removing manipulation, but became less active thereafter. The mean locomotor stamina of tailless geckos was reduced by about 30% of the mean value for tailed ones. However, as the maximum stamina predicted from the laboratory trials is seldom required in nature, we expect that the costs associated with the reduced locomotor stamina may be relatively minor in T. scincus. All other examined locomotor (overall speed, maximal speed and stride length) and behavioral (distance to refuge, approach distance and flight distance) traits were not affected by the tail‐removing manipulation. Overall, our results suggest that tail autotomy plays no important role in influencing locomotor performance and anti‐predator behavior in lizards where the tail has no direct role in locomotion but is used to direct predatory strikes away from the torso.  相似文献

Push-pull cannulae were implanted toward the tuberal region of the hypothalamus in ten intact New Zealand male rabbits. In the first experiment, rabbits were perfused at different times after castration: 5-10 days (n = 10), 22-31 days (n = 9) and 50-64 days (n = 8). The release, mean amplitude and mean frequency of luteinizing-hormone-releasing hormone (LHRH) signals from 37 perfusions in ten animals were analysed in intact rabbits and at different times after castration. No significant changes in release of LHRH and in amplitude were observed, but the frequency was significantly higher 22-31 days after castration than in intact rabbits (intact: 0.86 +/- 0.12; castrated: 1.20 +/- 0.13 pulses h-1, P < 0.035; n = 9). In Expt 2, testosterone and placebo Silastic capsules were implanted in the castrated rabbits. Perfusions were performed in the following four periods, defined by season and time after testosterone and placebo implants: (i) spring; before implants, (ii) late spring; 0-2 weeks after implants, (iii) summer solstice; 2-4 weeks after implants and (iv) summer; 4-6 weeks after implants. Castrated rabbits were perfused during spring; castrated rabbits with testosterone capsule implants were perfused during late spring, around summer solstice and in summer and castrated rabbits with placebo implants were perfused during periods (iii) and (iv). Castrated animals with placebo implants showed no significant changes in mean LHRH release and amplitude, although the frequency was significantly higher around the summer solstice period than in castrated rabbits perfused in the spring. In castrated rabbits with testosterone implants LHRH release was significantly higher in late spring than around the summer solstice and in the summer. In addition, the concentrations of LHRH in late spring were significantly higher than those of intact and castrated animals. In contrast, mean LHRH amplitude and frequency did not change. Mean amount of LHRH released and amplitude in castrated rabbits with testosterone implants were significantly lower around the summer solstice than in late spring or summer and compared with intact animals around summer solstice and in castrated rabbits in early spring. These data demonstrate that there were no significant changes in the mean amplitude and release of LHRH after castration from 5 and up to 64 days in rabbits with hypothalamic push-pull cannulae, in contrast to the well established dramatic effect of castration on gonadotrophin concentrations. Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors may influence human physiology, health, and performance by also modulating endocrine pathways. We evaluated the effects of a 2-day tadalafil administration on adenohypophyseal and adrenal hormone adaptation to exercise in humans. Fourteen healthy males were included in a double-blind crossover trial. Each volunteer randomly received two tablets of placebo or tadalafil (20 mg/day with a 36-h interval) before a maximal exercise was performed. After a 2-wk washout, the volunteers were crossed over. Blood samples were collected at -30 and -15 min and immediately before exercise, immediately after, and during recovery (+15, +30, +60, and +90 min) for adrenocorticotropin (ACTH), β-endorphin, growth hormone (GH), prolactin, cortisol (C), corticosterone, dehydroepiandrosterone-sulfate (DHEAS), and cortisol binding globulin (CBG) assays. C-to-CBG (free cortisol index, FCI) and DHEAS-to-C ratios were calculated. Exercise intensity, perceived exertion rate, O? consumption, and CO? and blood lactate concentration were evaluated. ACTH, GH, C, corticosterone, and CBG absolute concentrations and/or areas under the curve (AUC) increased after exercise after both placebo and tadalafil. Exercise increased DHEAS only after placebo. Compared with placebo, tadalafil administration reduced the ACTH, C, corticosterone, and FCI responses to exercise and was associated with higher β-endorphin AUC and DHEAS-to-C ratio during recovery, without influencing cardiorespiratory and performance parameters. Tadalafil reduced the activation of the hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis during exercise by probably influencing the brain's nitric oxide- and cGMP-mediated pathways. Further studies are necessary to confirm our results and to identify the involved mechanisms, possible health risks, and potential clinical uses.  相似文献

Steroid hormones have similar functions across vertebrates, but circulating concentrations can vary dramatically among species. We examined the hypothesis that variation in titres of corticosterone (Cort) and testosterone (T) is related to life-history traits of avian species. We predicted that Cort would reach higher levels under stress in species with higher annual adult survival rates since Cort is thought to promote physiological and behavioural responses that reduce risk to the individual. Conversely, we predicted that peak T during the breeding season would be higher in short-lived species with high mating effort as this hormone is known to promote male fecundity traits. We quantified circulating hormone concentrations and key life-history traits (annual adult survival rate, breeding season length, body mass) in males of free-living bird species during the breeding season at a temperate site (northern USA) and a tropical site (central Panama). We analysed our original data by themselves, and also combined with published data on passerine birds to enhance sample size. In both approaches, variation in baseline Cort (Cort0) among species was inversely related to breeding season length and body mass. Stress-induced corticosterone (MaxCort) also varied inversely with body mass and, as predicted, also varied positively with annual adult survival rates. Furthermore, species from drier and colder environments exhibited lower MaxCort than mesic and tropical species; T was lowest in species from tropical environments. These findings suggest that Cort0, MaxCort and T modulate key vertebrate life-history responses to the environment, with Cort0 supporting energetically demanding processes, MaxCort promoting survival and T being related to mating success.  相似文献

A 122-day trial was conducted with grazing beef heifers (N=120; 14 to 17 months of age) to determine the effects of a silastic Norgestomet prototype implant on heifer weight gain and on the suppression of ovarian luteal activity. The retention rate of the Norgestomet implants and of silastic placebo implants, which were either left untreated, or were topically treated with oxytetracycline, was determined. Medication of the placebo implants with oxytetracycline increased (P < 0.01) implant retention rate at both Day 56 and Day 122. Heifers with Norgestomet implants had higher body weight gains during the last 66 days (P < 0.05), and during the entire 122-day trial (P < 0.07) than heifers with placebo implants. Serum progesterone concentrations on Day 111 or Day 112 indicated a decrease (P < 0.01) in percentage of heifers with ovarian luteal activity on the Norgestomet treatment compared with heifers receiving placebos (23.8% vs 87.7%, respectively). The Norgestomet implant has the potential for suppressing ovarian luteal activity while improving weight gain in beef heifers.  相似文献

Many geckos use adhesive toe pads on the bottom of their digits to attach to surfaces with remarkable strength. Although gecko adhesion has been studied for hundreds of years, gaps exist in our understanding at the whole-animal level. It remains unclear whether the strength and maintenance of adhesion are determined by the animal or are passively intrinsic to the system. Here we show, for the first time, that strong adhesion is produced passively at the whole-animal level. Experiments on both live and recently euthanized tokay geckos (Gekko gecko) revealed that death does not affect the dynamic adhesive force or motion of a gecko foot when pulled along a vertical surface. Using a novel device that applied repeatable and steady-increasing pulling forces to the foot in shear, we found that the adhesive force was similarly high and variable when the animal was alive (mean ± s.d. = 5.4 ± 1.7 N) and within 30 min after death (5.4 ± 2.1 N). However, kinematic analyses showed that live geckos are able to control the degree of toe pad engagement and can rapidly stop strong adhesion by hyperextending the toes. This study offers the first assessment of whole-animal adhesive force under extremely controlled conditions. Our findings reveal that dead geckos maintain the ability to adhere with the same force as living animals, disproving that strong adhesion requires active control.  相似文献

Numerous physiological and molecular changes accompany dietary restriction (DR), which has been a major impediment to elucidating the causal basis underlying DR's many health benefits. Two major metabolic responses to DR that potentially underlie many of these changes are the body temperature (T(b)) and body weight (BW) responses. These responses also represent an especially difficult challenge to uncouple during DR. We demonstrate in this study, using two recombinant inbred (RI) panels of mice (the LXS and LSXSS) that naturally occurring genetic variation serves as a powerful tool for modulating T(b) and BW independently during DR. The correlation coefficient between the two responses was essentially zero, with R = -0.04 in the LXS and -0.03 in the LSXSS, the latter averaged across replicate cohorts. This study is also the first to report that there is highly significant (P = 10(-10)) strain variation in the T(b) response to DR in the LXS (51 strains tested), with strain means ranging from 2 to 4 degrees C below normal. The results suggest that the strain variation in the T(b) response to DR is largely due to differences in the rate of heat loss rather than heat production (i.e., metabolic rate). This variation can thus be used to assess the long-term effects of lower T(b) independent of BW or metabolic rate, as well as independent of food intake and motor activity as previously shown. These results also suggest that murine genetic variation may be useful for uncoupling many more responses to DR.  相似文献

The gecko Oedura marmorata was studied in two different climatic zones: the arid zone of central Australia and in the wet-dry tropics of northern Australia. Doubly labelled water was used to measure field metabolic rate (FMR) and water flux rates of animals in the field during the temperate seasons of spring, summer and winter, and during the tropical wet and dry seasons. FMRs were highest in the tropical wet season and lowest in the temperate winter. The geckos in central Australia expended less energy than predicted for a similarly sized iguanid lizard, but geckos from the tropics expended about the same amount of energy as predicted for an iguanid. Water flux rates of geckos from the arid zone were extremely low in all seasons compared to other reptiles, and although water flux was higher in tropical geckos, the rates were low compared to other tropical reptiles. The standard metabolic rates (SMRs) of geckos were similar between the two regions and among the seasons. Geckos selected higher body temperatures (T bs) in a laboratory thermal gradient in the summer (33.5°C) and wet (33.8°C) seasons compared to the winter (31.7°C) and dry (31.4°C) seasons. The mean T bs selected in the laboratory thermal gradient by geckos from the two regions were not different at a given time of year. The energy expended during each season was partitioned into components of resting metabolism, T b and activity. Most of the energy expended by geckos from central Australia could be attributed to the effects of temperature on resting lizards in all three seasons, but the energy expended by tropical geckos includes a substantial component due to activity during both seasons. This study revealed variability in patterns of ecological energetics between populations of closely related geckos, differences which cannot be entirely attributed to seasonal or temperature effects. We tested for hormonal and behavioral differences between Carolina chickadees (Poecile carolinensis) taken from a disturbed (recently logged) forest, an undisturbed forest, or a residential site. We measured fecal corticosterone and body mass levels in the field, and fecal corticosterone, body mass, and caching behavior in an aviary experiment. In the field, birds from the disturbed forest exhibited significantly higher fecal corticosterone levels than birds from either the undisturbed forest or from the residential site. Birds from the disturbed forest also exhibited lower body mass than those from the undisturbed forest but higher body mass than those from the residential site. Our aviary results suggest that these physiological differences between field sites are the result of short-term responses to ecological factors: neither body mass nor fecal corticosterone levels varied between birds captured at different sites. Aviary sample sizes were sufficient to detect seasonal variation in fecal corticosterone (lowest in summer), body mass (highest in spring), and rate of gain in body mass (highest in winter). Under "closed-economy" aviary conditions (all food available from a feeder in the aviary), there were no site differences in the percent of seeds taken from the feeder that were cached. However, under "open-economy" conditions (food occasionally available ad libitum), significantly fewer seeds were cached by birds from the disturbed forest compared to the undisturbed or residential sites. On average, there was only a two-fold difference in population levels of fecal corticosterone. This difference is about the same as an increase in fecal corticosterone induced by a 2-h increase in food deprivation and cannot be considered to be an acute stress response to disturbance.  相似文献

In the polymorphic white-throated sparrow (Zonotrichia albicollis), tan-striped males provision nestlings at higher rates than do white-striped males. In a previous study, we found that tan-striped males had lower baseline corticosterone levels than white-striped males during the nestling stage. To determine if this variation in corticosterone influences morph-specific differences in nestling provisioning behavior, we used intraperitoneal osmotic pumps to increase baseline corticosterone levels in tan-striped males (TS CORT) and administer RU486, a glucocorticoid receptor antagonist, in white-striped males (WS RU486). These manipulations essentially reversed morph-specific nestling provisioning behavior in males. TS CORT males fed nestlings at lower rates than TS controls (vehicle-only implant), and at similar rates to WS controls (vehicle-only implant), while WS RU486 males fed nestlings at higher rates than WS controls, and at similar rates to TS controls. These results demonstrate that (1) increases in baseline corticosterone (i.e., below concentrations associated with the adrenocortical response to stress) can directly or indirectly inhibit nestling provisioning behavior, and (2) corticosterone influences morph-specific variation in parental behavior in male white-throated sparrows. This study contributes to the growing evidence that modulating baseline CORT mediates parental care and self-maintenance activities in birds, and thus may serve as a mechanism for balancing current reproductive success with survival.  相似文献

Stress hormones, such as corticosterone, play a crucial role in orchestrating physiological reaction patterns shaping adapted responses to stressful environments. Concepts aiming at predicting individual and population responses to environmental stress typically consider that stress hormones and their effects on metabolic rate provide appropriate proxies for the energy budget. However, uncoupling between the biochemical processes of respiration, ATP production, and free-radical production in mitochondria may play a fundamental role in the stress response and associated life histories. In this study, we aim at dissecting sub-cellular mechanisms that link these three processes by investigating both whole-organism metabolism, liver mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation processes (O2 consumption and ATP production) and ROS emission in Zootoca vivipara individuals exposed 21 days to corticosterone relative to a placebo. Corticosterone enhancement had no effect on mitochondrial activity and efficiency. In parallel, the corticosterone treatment increased liver mass and mitochondrial protein content suggesting a higher liver ATP production. We also found a negative correlation between mitochondrial ROS emission and plasma corticosterone level. These results provide a proximal explanation for enhanced survival after chronic exposure to corticosterone in this species. Importantly, none of these modifications affected resting whole-body metabolic rate. Oxygen consumption, ATP, and ROS emission were thus independently affected in responses to corticosterone increase suggesting that concepts and models aiming at linking environmental stress and individual responses may misestimate energy allocation possibilities.  相似文献

These results demonstrate that (1) increases in baseline corticosterone (i.e., below concentrations associated with the adrenocortical response to stress) can directly or indirectly inhibit nestling provisioning behavior, and (2) corticosterone influences morph-specific variation in parental behavior in male white-throated sparrows. This study contributes to the growing evidence that modulating baseline CORT mediates parental care and self-maintenance activities in birds, and thus may serve as a mechanism for balancing current reproductive success with survival.  相似文献

Although individual variation is a key requirement for natural selection, little is known about the magnitude and patterns of individual variation in endocrine systems or the functional significance of that variation. Here we describe (1) the extent and repeatability of inter-individual variation in adrenocortical responses and (2) its relationship to sex-specific phenotypic quality, such as song duration and frequency and timing of egg laying. We measured adrenocortical responses to a standardized stressor in zebra finches (Taeniopygia guttata) at two life history stages: approximately day 16 (nestlings) and 3 months of age (sexually mature adults). Subsequently, we assessed phenotypic (reproductive) quality of all individuals as adults. Marked inter-individual variation in the adrenocortical response was seen in both sexes and ages, e.g., stress-induced corticosterone ranged from 2.2 to 62.5 ng/mL in nestlings and 5.0-64.0 ng/mL in adults. We found sex differences in (a) inter-individual variation in the adrenocortical response, (b) repeatability, and (c) relationships between corticosterone levels and phenotypic quality. In males, variation in nestling corticosterone was weakly but positively correlated with brood size and negatively correlated with nestling mass (though this relationship was dependent on one individual). There was no significant correlation of adrenocortical responses between two stages in males and adult phenotypic quality was significantly correlated only with adult corticosterone levels. In contrast, in females there was no relationship between nestling corticosterone and brood size or mass but adrenocortical response was repeatable between two stages (r2=0.413). To assess whether alterations in the normal pattern of testosterone (T) secretion might be beneficial or detrimental, we studied a breeding population of dark-eyed juncos in which we elevated T experimentally and measured its effect on potential correlates of fitness. We treated both free-living and captive males with implants that were either empty (C-males, controls) or packed with T (T-males, experimentals). Timing of implant varied and was designed to mimic natural peak breeding levels except that peaks were either prolonged or premature. We bled the birds at recapture and analyzed their plasma, and that of their female mates, for T and corticosterone (B). We also measured body mass and fat score in free-living T- and C-males. In the field, T-implants elevated T and kept it elevated for at least a month. Experimental males also had higher B than controls. In captives, the effect of the implants on plasma T was detectable within 24 hr. B in captive T-males was again higher than in captive C-males. In females, neither T nor B differed between mates of T- and C-males. T-males implanted in early spring lost more mass between implant and recapture in late spring than did controls and also had lower fat scores when recaptured. When implants were inserted in summer, treatment did not influence mass. Elevated T in early spring apparently hastened the transition from the winter to the breeding mode of fat storage. We suggest that prolonged elevation of testosterone might be selected against because of the association between T and B. Premature elevation of T might be costly because of the resultant loss of mass and fat reserves, which could lead to mortality when spring snowstorms prevent access to food.  相似文献
