The behavioral syndrome hypothesis suggests that individualanimals within a population behave differently due to specificbehavioral types, and these should be consistent across behaviorsor in different contexts. In contrast, for animals that livewithin an environment in which territory quality can changeover time, natural selection should have favored behavioralflexibility and modulation of the cost of defense in relationto territory quality. This would require assessment of the territoryfollowed by displays of appropriate types and intensities ofbehavior. We examined the territorial behavior of male beaugregorydamselfish (Stegastes leucostictus) by enhancing territory qualityusing artificial breeding sites and comparing their behaviorto males on lower quality natural sites. When male fish weredefending high-quality artificial territories, they had higherlevels of aggression toward male conspecifics and courtshiptoward females than when on low-quality natural territories. We also found that aggression and courtship behaviors were correlatedon natural sites but not on artificial sites. Behaviors werenot correlated within individuals when males switched from naturalto artificial territories or from artificial to natural territories. These results indicate that males assess their current territoriesand adjust behaviors accordingly and that courtship and aggressivebehaviors are not linked within a permanent behavioral syndrome.  相似文献

Competitor intrusions and mate-search tactics in a territorial marine fish   总被引:2,自引:1,他引:1
Recent theoretical studies have drawn attention to the importanceof understanding the costs females experience during mate choiceand mating and how females resolve the trade-offs presentedby such costs. In garibaldi damselfish (Hypsypops rubicundus)females defend permanent feeding and shelter territories andmust leave their territories to search for and spawn with nestingmales. Both mate searching and spawning occur in bouts, separatedby returns to the territory. I used focal female observationsto test predictions of the hypothesis that such behavior isa means of minimizing the amount of food lost to competitorsthat enter the female's territory while she is searching foror spawning with males. Consistent with this hypothesis, therewas a strong likelihood that the number of intruders enteringthe territory would increase linearly, and hence their totalimpact exponentially, with time away. In addition, the averageduration of searching bouts and the duration of a spawning boutwere significantly inversely related to a measure of territorialintruder pressure. Most intruders were heterospecific food competitors;incidence of intrusion by conspecifics was rare, and intrudingconspeciflcs did not contest the owner upon her return. In addition, the time females spent in their territories before beginninganother bout of searching was not positively related to theduration of the previous bout. Thus, there, is no support forthe alternative hypotheses that returning to the territory isa means of preventing takeover of the territory by conspedflcsor is the result of fatigue.  相似文献

Three groups of juvenile salmon were introduced sequentially into an artificial stream to investigate the effects of prior residence on behaviour and territory choice. Almost half of the first group obtained and defended distinct territories, the other half being constrained to an area approximately the size of one large territory. All of the fish in the subsequent groups, bar one, were also constrained to the same site. Since the fish were of similar size, prior residence alone seemed to influence which individuals obtained territories. However, within the first group, the fish that obtained territories were larger and more aggressive. The territorial fish did not appear to choose the most profitable territories, although they had the greatest opportunity to do so. Since juvenile salmon emerge from their gravel nests fairly synchronously, a time constraint on site sampling is hypothesised: there may be a risk in taking time to sample sites, since these same sites may become occupied with conspecifics. However, fish with territories fed at faster rates than non-territorial fish, possibly because of reduced competition for prey items. Consequently, fish from the first group (containing most of the territorial fish) grew faster than the other two groups. Moreover, most of the territory holders, but only one of the non-territorial fish, reached the threshold size that increases their probability of smolting the following year. This suggests that ability to obtain a defensible territory, primarily through prior residence, influences the age at which juvenile salmon can migrate to sea.  相似文献

Pikas (Ochotona princeps) defend individual territories on talus. We tested the short-term stability of pika territories and found that although animals may intrude on the territories of conspecifics at any time, they were much more likely to do so if the occupant was inactive. Pikas usually waited until occupants were unavailable to defend their territory before intruding, apparently to avoid detection and repulsion by the occupant. Intruder avoidance of active occupants was most pronounced among same-sex dyads and non-nearest neighbours. Instances of territory intrusion were most frequent among nearest neighbour heterosexual dyads. Most cases of intrusion appeared to be related to eventual relocation of territories, deterring settlement of unfamiliar conspecifics on nearby vacant territories, and/or increasing familiarity with nearest neighbours of the opposite sex.  相似文献

Home-range relocation occurs during natal and breeding dispersal, ontogenetic habitat shifts, and the maintenance of resource-or density-dependent patterns of distribution. Relocating animalsare expected to change their behavior to compensate for limitedfamiliarity with the new home range and with neighboring conspecifics;such changes may indicate some of the costs of relocation. Littleis known, however, about the magnitude and duration of the changesor about the types of behavior affected. We investigated theshort-term (2 day) behavioral changes associated with relocationin the highly territorial longfin damselfish, Stegastes diencaeus. We compared the behavior of newcomers settling into experimentallycreated vacancies in an established neighborhood with that ofthe original residents of the same territories. The greatestdifference was an increase in the rate of agonistic interactions.Newcomers also used smaller territories, moved more, and fedless. Neighboring damselfishes were less aggressive toward neighborsthat expanded into vacant territories than toward "strangers"that relocated from elsewhere. The behavior of newcomers approachedthat of original residents within 2 days but territory sizedid not. These observations suggest that relocating a territoryincreases energy expenditure and decreases energy intake. Suchcosts could explain the philopatry of reef fish when alternativelocations are of uncertain quality or are only slightly better.Nevertheless, they are unlikely to outweigh the long-term benefitsof obtaining a superior territory—especially for individualsfrom adjacent territories.  相似文献

We studied the effects of vegetation structure and nest density on territory size and aggression in the black-headed gull (Larus ridibundus). Vegetation structure influenced the types of aggressive behaviour, but not territory size. The proportion of overt aggression (attacks, fights) was highest in barren areas or those with short, sparse vegetation, and lowest in plots covered with dense, tall grass. We explain this by decreased visibility of conspecifics in habitats isolated by vegetation. In such areas, total aggression did not decrease, because the low proportion of attacks and fights was offset by an increase of more moderate (“upright”) displays. Only when nest density was high did the vegetation reduce the frequency of agonistic behaviour — but then it comprised almost exclusively attacks and fights. As expected, greater nest density was related to reduced territory size and an increased proportion of overt aggression. A high proportion of attacks and fights occurred in the plot with the lowest nest density, where at the same time there were also numerous first-year breeders. We conclude that, when analyzing the effects of habitat conditions on aggressive behaviour, it is important to consider the structure of behaviour, and not only the total frequency of all types of agonistic interactions.  相似文献

Determinants of territory size in the pomacentrid reef fish,Parma victoriae   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
Summary Factors governing the size of territories defended by the pomacentrid reef fish, Parma victoriae, were investigated, prompted by contradictory predictions in the literature concerning the effects of food supply and competitors. Observations were carried out over the non-breeding period (March–October) on a medium density population in which territories were partially contiguous. The territory size of adult fish varied between 3 and 26 m2, and was inversely correlated with local densities of conspecifics. The same range in territory size was found for both males and females, which did not differ in the time they spent on territory defence and foraging activities. No correlation existed between territory size and the abundance of algal food, body size, age or time spent on territory defence. Also, there was little variation in territory size over time, despite seasonal changes in the abundance of food algae.Experimental reduction of food supplies on isolated territories of males and females had no effect on territory size. In a higher density habitat an experiment was carried out in which population density and food abundance were simultaneously manipulated. This showed that territory size was primarily determined by intraspecific interactions, as territories exhibited considerable increases in size upon removal of neighbours. No changes in the size of defended areas resulted from either artificial increases or decreases of food levels. There were also no changes in the time spent on defence of territories, foraging time or feeding rates associated with food manipulations or territory expansion, which suggested that food was not a limited resource. This conflicted with current theories proposed to explain territory defence and expansion. It is hypothesized that intraspecific interactions constrain territory size well below the optimum in terms of the abundance of preferred food algal species.  相似文献

Red squirrels (Tamiasciurus hudsonicus) defend food-based territoriesyear round, and juveniles must acquire a territory before winterto survive. We experimentally removed territory owners duringthe time that juveniles were becoming independent to examinethe effect of local vacancies on dispersal patterns. Juvenilesattempted to take over removal territories most frequently. However, females with offspring still on the natal territoryactually took over twice as many territories as juveniles. Thesefemales did not appear to move because of low reproductive potentialor to increase territory quality. Instead, moving to a removalterritory allowed more of their offspring to remain on the natalterritory, which appeared to increase juvenile survival.  相似文献

Overlapping territories of a benthophagous morwong, Goniistius zonatus, were studied at two temperate water locations (Morode and Arakashi) in southern Japan. At both locations, total length (TL) of the fish inhabiting the study areas ranged from 12 cm to 34 cm, but fish 20–25 cm TL were not found in the Arakashi study area. At Morode, individuals maintained territories against conspecifics of similar size, and the territories broadly overlapped among three size classes (small < 20 cm medium <25 cm large). At Arakashi, large-sized fish chased individuals of both the same- and medium-sized individuals from their territories, resulting in territory overlap only between large and small size classes. The territories were apparently maintained for feeding, as the main activity of the fish within the territories was foraging and no reproductive behavior was observed at either location. All fish foraged on similar substrates in the daytime. At Morode, however, the diet composition differed among different size classes, whereas at Arakashi, fish of all sizes fed on quite similar foods. A comparison between the two populations indicates that the territory overlap among the three size classes at Morode may have resulted from food-resource partitioning.  相似文献

Black holes, mate retention, and the evolution of ungulate leks   总被引:4,自引:2,他引:2
In some ungulates living in unstable herds, females in estrusleave their usual groups and join males defending mating territories.During the 12-24 h before mating, females commonly move severaltimes between males. These movements are commonly caused byharems being disrupted by young males or by overenthusiasticcourtship by the territorial male. When females leave a territorythey typically move to its nearest neighbor. Under these circumstances, clusters of territories can retain estrous females until theymate and leave the lek. This paper develops a model to investigatethe benefits of defending clustered versus dispersed territoriesto males and the consequences of variation in the rate of femalemovement between territories (Pm) and the tendency for femalesto move from one territory to a neighboring territory (a). Wherefemales move between territories at least once every 24 h (Pm< 0.04) and usually move to neighboring territories (a <0.5), the mating success of males is inversely related to thedistance from their territory to its nearest neighbor, and malesdefending clustered territories have higher mating rates thanthose defending dispersed territories. This process may be importantin the initial evolution of ungulate leks, which may resembleblack holes, attracting and retaining estrous females untilthey mate and their estrus ceases. It provides one possibleexplanation of the evolution of ungulate leks that does notrely on female preferences for mating with particular phenotypiccategories of males.  相似文献

The mutualistic nature of cleaning symbioses has long remainedunconfirmed because of the difficulty in showing net benefitsfor clients. We have previously shown that cleaning gobies (Elacatinusspp.) within territories of Caribbean longfin damselfish (Stegastesdiencaeus) reduce the number of gnathiid isopod ectoparasiteson territory owners. We now investigate whether this benefitof being cleaned has reproductive consequences for male longfindamselfish. The mating success, rate of egg loss, and parentalaggression of 40 nest-guarding males were assessed during sixconsecutive monthly reproductive periods. Ten males had cleaningstations within their territory, 10 males were without cleaningstations, and 20 males initially with a cleaning station hadtheir cleaners removed half-way through the study. Ectoparasiteloads on our focal fish were very low; however, damselfish withcleaning stations still had significantly fewer ectoparasitesthan did fish without cleaning stations. There was, however,no significant difference in the number of eggs, clutches, orarea of clutches received, or in the number of eggs lost beforehatching between damselfish with and without cleaners. We alsofound no difference in parental male aggression between damselfishwith and without cleaners. We conclude that although ectoparasiteremoval appears to have no direct consequence for reproduction,at least for the levels of infestations observed on our studysite, it may still affect other aspects of damselfish fitnesssuch as survival.  相似文献

The social organization, spatial utilization and movement patterns of free-ranging desmans ( Galemys pyrenaicus G.) were studied by radiotracking individuals in the French Pyrenees. During the period of study, May to July, single adult male and female desmans formed a pair and defended their shared territory from neighbouring conspecifics by vigilance and scent-marking behaviour. Other adults did not form pair bonds and remained solitary. In such pairs, the territory of the adult male was always larger than, and completely enclosed, that of the paired female. Neighbouring pairs occupied contiguous territories of similar length. The territories of neighbouring males overlapped to a small extent, but the territory of one male and that of a neighbouring female were never seen to overlap. Juveniles were observed to utilize the territory of resident pairs, prior to their dispersal. Paired adults and juveniles exploited their ranges on a regular daily basis, whilst those of solitary adults, being larger than those of the former, were utilized on a 48–hour basis. Paired males appeared to invest more time in defending the borders of their shared territory than did females which, in contrast, spent most of their time within the centre of the territory. Despite some degree of territorial overlap between neighbouring conspecifics, their mutual avoidance, achieved through a system of temporal range utilization, resulted in few agonistic encounters.  相似文献

1.?Because habitats have profound effects on individual fitness, there is strong selection for improving the choice of breeding habitat. One possible mechanism is for individuals to use public information when prospecting future breeding sites; however, to our knowledge, no study has shown prospecting behaviour to be directly linked to subsequent choice of breeding site and future reproductive success. 2.?We collected long-term data on territory-specific prospecting behaviour and subsequent breeding in the short-lived northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe). Non-breeders established prospecting territories (<2 ha) that overlapped the breeding territories of conspecifics. We tested whether: (i) prospectors used social and environmental cues that predicted territory-specific breeding success in the following year, and (ii) the prospecting territory was tightly linked to the subsequent breeding territory of the prospector, and whether this link would be weakened by intraspecific competition with original territory owners if they also survived. 3.?As expected, prospectors were attracted to a combination of site-specific cues that predicted future breeding success, i.e. short ground vegetation, a successfully breeding focal pair and successful close neighbours. 4.?Prospecting behaviour was directly linked to the choice of the following year's breeding territory: 79% of surviving prospectors established a breeding territory at their prospecting site in the following year, with their breeding success being higher than other individuals of the same age. As predicted, fidelity to the prospected site was strongly dependent on whether the original territory owner of the same sex had died or moved. 5.?Our findings suggest that the use of multiple cues reduces the negative impact of stochasticity on the reliability of social cues at small spatial scales (e.g. territories) and hence increases the probability of breeding success in the next year. Also, the use of conspecific attraction (i.e. the preference for breeding aggregations) is selectively advantageous because individuals are more likely to find a vacancy in an aggregation as compared to a solitary site. By extension, we hypothesize that species life-history traits may influence the spatial scale of prospecting behaviour and habitat selection strategies.  相似文献

Synopsis The social and reproductive biology of the sand tilefish,Malacanthus plumieri (Malacanthidae), was studied at Glover's Reef, Belize, where this species occurs in colonies over sand-rubble flats. Individuals each occupy a home burrow refuge and a surrounding home range. Home range overlap among adjacent fish of the same sex is low, and individuals defend exclusive use of much of their home range against all conspecifics except mates (i.e., territoriality). Areas defended by males overlap the territories of up to 6 females; and male territory area is positively related to the number of female residents. Males maintain dominance over females within their territories by aggression, including intervention into some female disputes. Females spawn pelagically-dispersed eggs as frequently as every day. Each female spawns near her burrow, almost exclusively with the male whose defended area encompasses her territory (harem polygyny). Tilefish colonies therefore consist of a mosaic of female territories over which adjacent male territories are superimposed. Histological evidence and observation of behavioral sex change in one female revealed thatM. plumieri is capable of protogynous sex reversal. Females did not change sex in response to removal of one male. Occurrence of small transitional fish indicates that the onset of sex change is controlled by factors other than size-related social hierarchies within harems or colonies.  相似文献

Ayu fish form algae-feeding territories in a river during a non-breeding (growing) season. We build a cost-benefit theory to describe the breakdown and formation of territory. In the early stage of a growing season, all fish hold territories at low densities. Once all territory sites are occupied, excess fish become floaters. When fish density further increases, a phase transition occurs: all the territories suddenly break down and fish form a school. In contrast, when the fish density is decreased, territories are suddenly formed from the school. Both theory and experiments demonstrate that ayu should exhibit a historical effect: the breakdown and formation processes of territory are largely different. In particular, the theory in formation process predicts a specific fish behavior: an “attempted territory holder” that tries to have a small territory emerges just before the formation of territory.  相似文献

The territorial behaviour of a small rock-dwelling cichlid, Pseudotropheus aurora , was studied at Thumbi Island West at the southern end of Lake Malawi. P. aurora is one of several species that have been introduced to an already diverse fish community. Many of the endemic and introduced species are highly territorial. The coexistence of an introduced territorial species within a speciesrich community of other territorial species is examined. Territories from which P. aurora individuals were removed were invariably re-occupied by conspecifics. Similarly, when all territories of a certain area were emptied of all territory owners of any existing species, the former P. aurora territories were re-occupied by conspecifics.
The possible roles of site specificity, competitive exclusion and behaviourally transmitted traditions regarding territories are discussed.  相似文献

The hypothesis that resource monopolization and defense increaseas the spatial clumping of resources increases was tested usinggroups of three convict cichlids competing for 120 Daphnia magnaprey. Spatial clumping was manipulated by varying the distance(3, 20, or 40 cm) between three tubes through which the preyappeared. As predicted, monopolization of prey (percentage eatenby the dominant fish) and frequency of aggression (chases perminute) by dominant fish increased significantly as the distancebetween the tubes decreased. However, there was no evidenceof individual flexibility in the aggressiveness (percentageof conspecifics chased) of dominant fish across treatments.Differences among dominant fish in aggressiveness were positivelycorrelated with their ability to monopolize prey, but the strengthof the correlation decreased as the distance between the tubesincreased. Aggression appears to be a more effective mechanismof interference competition when resources are clumped thanwhen resources are dispersed.  相似文献

Individuals should defend sites when the expected benefits ofthe territory exceed the cost of defense. However, if territoryqulaity is unpredictable or difficult to assess, the expectedpattern of territorial behavior is less clear. In a Mediterraneanwrasse, Symphodus ocellatus, mating success is skewed with 2%of nesting males getting more than 20% of the spawning success.Yet, variation in mating success is not explained by any knownphysical characteristic of males or their territories. Instead, females prefer nests with a recent history of mating successbecause males are less likely to desert the offspring she leavesbehind. Thus, territory quality is transient and determinedby interactions between the sexes. I measured the frequencyof territorial takeovers and the uncertainty in mating successamong days at a nest. Observations indicated that S. ocellatusmales usurped their neighbor's successful nests when males wereunsuccessful and larger than their successful neighbor. Sitesthat achieved mating success had a significantly higher probability(0.84) of remaining sucessful between consecutive days thanunsuccessful territories had of becoming successful (0.30).Unsuccessful males obtained higher and more certain fitnessreturns if they usurped a successful neighbor's territory. Interactionswithin and between the sexes drive uncertainty in success, whichinfluences territorial behavior in this species.  相似文献

To lek or not to lek: mating strategies of male fallow deer   总被引:5,自引:1,他引:4
We studied the mating system of fallow deer (Dama dama) for6 years in central Italy. Males in this population could defendterritories that were either single, clumped in leks, or satelliteto leks. The most highly successful males in our study werein leks. When we considered all males, there were no significantdifferences in average copulatory success according to territorytype because many lek males did not achieve any copulations, which were seen in only a few lek territories. The variancein copulatory success, however, was much greater for leks thanelsewhere. Single territories were occupied for shorter timesduring the rut than lek territories. Fighting among males wasmore frequent in the lek, even when we excluded highly successfullek males from the analysis. Chases of nonterritorial malesand harem size were correlated with the number of copulationsachieved by individual males, but did not vary according toterritory type. Copulatory success of some individuals increasedwith age, but there were no age differences among males holdingdifferent types of territories. Satellite males switched tolek territoriality in the course of one rut, but switches fromsingle territory to lek territory were rare. We suggest thatmales in single territories are inferior competitors that selecta low-risk, lowbenefit strategy, whereas those in lek territorieswhere no copulations were seen may be attempting to establishthemselves on the lek to increase their copulatory success infuture years.  相似文献

Computer simulations using a geographical information system were developed to investigate the relationships between the habitat composition of red grouse territories and the alignment of territory boundaries in relation to vegetation patterns. Field data were from a fifteen year study on Kerloch Moor, north-east Scotland, between 1963 and 1977.
In order to determine whether observed territories were arranged randomly with respect to a number of habitat characteristics, they were compared with many simulated sets of possible territory arrangements by translation of the territory boundaries to a number of different positions relative to the vegetation mosaic. A suite of summary statistics was calculated for the simulated configurations, against which the observed configurations were tested.
There was little evidence for territorial resource competition by red grouse. The positions of territories were not strongly influenced by their composition in terms of vegetation types or heather edge. Neither was there any obvious preference for territory boundaries to lie within particular vegetation types. However, there was clear evidence that physical features of the habitat (fences, walls, tracks, etc.) had a strong influence on the position of territory boundaries.
Temporal and spatial habitat heterogeneity led to a number of technical and analytical problems, and the implications of these are discussed.  相似文献
