Two clones of Hevea brasiliensis (RRII 105 and PB 235) were grown for one year in two distinct agroclimatic locations (warmer and colder, W and C) in peninsular India. We simultaneously measured gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence on fully mature intact leaves at different photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs) and ambient CO2 concentrations (C a) and at constant ambient O2 concentration (21 %). Net photosynthetic rate (P N), apparent quantum yield for CO2 assimilation (Φc), in vivo carboxylation efficiency (CE), and photosystem 2 quantum yield (ΦPS2) were low in plants grown in C climate and these reductions were more predominant in RRII 105 than in PB 235 which was also reflected in their growth. We estimated in these clones the partitioning of photosynthetic electrons between CO2 reduction (JA) and processes other than CO2 reduction (J*) at low and high PPFDs and C a. At high C a (700 µmol mol−1) most of the photosynthetic electrons were used for CO2 assimilation and negligible amount went for other processes when PPFD was low (200–300 µmol m−2 s−1) both in the C and W climates. But at high PPFD (900-1 100 µmol m−2 s−1), J* was appreciably high even at a high C a. Hence at normal ambient C a and high irradiance, electrons can be generated in the photosynthetic apparatus far in excess of what can be safely utilised for photosynthetic CO2 reduction. However, at high C a there was increased diversion of electrons to photosynthetic CO2 reduction which resulted in improved photosynthetic parameters even in plants grown in C climate.  相似文献

Winter wheat plants were grown in open top chambers either at 365 µmol mol–1 (AC) or at 700 µmol mol–1 (EC) air CO2 concentrations. The photosynthetic response of flag leaves at the beginning of flowering and on four vertical leaf levels at the beginning of grain filling were measured. Net photosynthetic rates (P N) were higher at both developmental phases in plants grown at EC coupled with larger leaf area and photosynthetic pigment contents. The widely accepted Farquhar net photosynthesis model was parameterised and tested using several observed data. After parameterisation the test results corresponded satisfactorily with observed values under several environmental conditions.  相似文献

The biodegradability of aerial material from a C4 plant, sorghum grown under ambient (345 µmol mol–1) and elevated (700 µmol mol–1) atmospheric CO2 concentrations were compared by measuring soil respiratory activity. Initial daily respiratory activity (measured over 10 h per day) increased four fold from 110 to 440 cm3 CO2 100g dry weight soil–1 in soils amended with sorghum grown under either elevated or ambient CO2. Although soil respiratory activity decreased over the following 30 days, respiration remained significantly higher (t-test;p>0.05) in soils amended with sorghum grown under elevated CO2 concentrations. Analysis of the plant material revealed no significant differences in C:N ratios between sorghum grown under elevated or ambient CO2. The reason for the differences in soil respiratory activity have yet to be elucidated. However if this trend is repeated in natural ecosystems, this may have important implications for C and N cycling.  相似文献

The adaptation of barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Akcent) plants to low (LI, 50 µmol m–2 s–1) and high (HI, 1000 µmol m–2 s–1) growth irradiances was studied using the simultaneous measurements of the photosynthetic oxygen evolution and chlorophyll a (Chl a) fluorescence at room temperature. If measured under ambient CO2 concentration, neither increase of the oxygen evolution rate (P) nor enhancement of non-radiative dissipation of the absorbed excitation energy within photosystem 2 (PS2) (determined as non-photochemical quenching of Chl a fluorescence, NPQ) were observed for HI plants compared with LI plants. Nevertheless, the HI plants exhibited a significantly higher proportion of QA in oxidised state (estimated from photochemical quenching of Chl a fluorescence, qP), by 49–102 % at irradiances above 200 µmol m–2 s–1 and an about 1.5 fold increase of irradiance-saturated PS2 electron transport rate (ETR) as compared to LI plants. At high CO2 concentration the degree of P stimulation was approximately three times higher for HI than for LI plants, and the irradiance-saturated P values at irradiances of 2 440 and 2 900 µmol m–2 s–1 were by 130 and 150 % higher for HI plants than for LI plants. We suggest that non-assimilatory electron transport dominates in the adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus of barley grown at high irradiances under ambient CO2 rather than an increased NPQ or an enhancement of irradiance-saturated photosynthesis.  相似文献

Leaves developed at high irradiance (I) often have higher photosynthetic capacity than those developed at low I, while leaves developed at elevated CO2 concentration [CO2] often have reduced photosynthetic capacity compared with leaves developed at lower [CO2]. Because both high I and elevated [CO2] stimulate photosynthesis of developing leaves, their contrasting effects on photosynthetic capacity at maturity suggest that the extra photosynthate may be utilized differently depending on whether I or [CO2] stimulates photosynthesis. These experiments were designed to test whether relationships between photosynthetic income and the net accumulation of soluble protein in developing leaves, or relationships between soluble protein and photosynthetic capacity at full expansion differed depending on whether I or [CO2] was varied during leaf development. Soybean plants were grown initially with a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of 950 µmol m–2 s–1 and 350 µmol [CO2] mol–1, then exposed to [CO2] ranging from 135 to 1400 µmol mol–1 for the last 3 d of expansion of third trifoliolate leaves. These results were compared with experiments in which I was varied at a constant [CO2] of 350 µmol mol–1 over the same developmental period. Increases in area and dry mass over the 3 d were determined along with daily photosynthesis and respiration. Photosynthetic CO2 exchange characteristics and soluble protein content of leaves were determined at the end of the treatment periods. The increase in leaflet mass was about 28 % of the dry mass income from photosynthesis minus respiration, regardless of whether [CO2] or I was varied, except that very low I or [CO2] increased this percentage. Leaflet soluble protein per unit of area at full expansion had the same positive linear relationship to photosynthetic income whether [CO2] or I was varied. For variation in I, photosynthetic capacity varied directly with soluble protein per unit area. This was not the case for variation in [CO2]. Increasing [CO2] reduced photosynthetic capacity per unit of soluble protein by up to a factor of 2.5, and photosynthetic capacity exhibited an optimum with respect to growth [CO2]. Thus CO2 did not alter the relationship between photosynthetic income and the utilization of photosynthate in the net accumulation of soluble protein, but did alter the relationship between soluble protein content and photosynthetic characteristics in this species.  相似文献

Gas exchange and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence were measured on young mature leaves of rose plants (Rosa hybrida cvs. First Red and Twingo) grown in two near-to-tight greenhouses, one under control ambient CO2 concentration, AC (355 µmol mol–1) and one under CO2 enrichment, EC (700 µmol mol–1), during four flushes from late June to early November. Supply of water and mineral elements was non-limiting while temperature was allowed to rise freely during daytime. Leaf diffusive conductance was not significantly reduced at EC but net photosynthetic rate increased by more than 100 %. Although the concentration of total non-structural saccharides was substantially higher in the leaves from the greenhouse with EC, PS2 (quantum efficiency of radiation use) around noon was not significantly reduced at EC indicating that there was no down-regulation of electron transport. Moreover, CO2 enrichment did not cause any increase in the risk of photo-damage, as estimated by the 1 – qP parameter. Non-photochemical quenching was even higher in the greenhouse with EC during the two summer flushes, when temperature and photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) were the highest. Hence rose photosynthesis benefits strongly from high concentrations of atmospheric CO2 at both high and moderate temperatures and PPFD.  相似文献

Two year old sweet chestnut seedlings (Castanea sativa Mill) were grown in pots at ambient (350 µmol·mol–1) and double (700 µmol·mol–1) atmospheric CO2 concentration in constantly ventilated greenhouses during entire growing seasons. CO2 enrichment caused either no significant change or a decrease in shoot response, depending on yearly weather conditions. Similarly, leaf area was either reduced or unchanged under elevated CO2. However, when grown under controlled conditions in a growth chamber, leaf area was enlarged with elevated CO2.The CO2 exchanges of whole plants were measured during the growing season. In elevated CO2, net photosynthetic rate was maximum in May and then decreased, reaching the level of the control at the end of the season. End of night dark respiration of enriched plants was significantly lower than that of control plants; this difference decreased with time and became negligible in the fall. The original CO2 level acted instantaneously on the respiration rate: a double concentration in CO2 decreased the respiration of control plants and a reduced concentration enhanced the respiration of enriched plants. The carbon balance of a chestnut seedling may then be modified in elevated CO2 by increased carbon inputs and decreased carbon outputs.  相似文献

The rates of respiration in light and darkness, C i/C a and carbon isotope fractionation were investigated in glycine decarboxylase-deficient plants of barley, potato and Arabidopsis thaliana grown in climate chambers with controlled light intensity, temperature, humidity, irradiation and different CO2 concentrations (360, 700 and 1400 µl l–1) and compared to the wild-type plants. All photorespiration-impaired plants exhibited higher C i/C a and corresponding lower apparent water-use efficiencies, which were more expressed under high irradiance and elevated temperature. The mutants were depleted in 13C as compared to the wild-type plants, with a difference of up to 6 following growth in 360 µl l–1 CO2. We determined the carbon isotope content at different CO2 concentrations to calculate the contribution of both C i/C a and photorespiration for 13C/12C fractionation. The direct effect of photorespiration was in the range of 0.7–1.0, from which we calculated the value of fractionation at the site of glycine decarboxylation as being 10–13, which is in agreement with the previously reported carbon isotope discrimination exerted by the glycine decarboxylase. Respiratory rates, particularly in the light, were increased in the glycine decarboxylase mutants. The necessity of the maintenance of a high CO2 concentration near the site of carboxylation in chloroplasts in plants deficient in photorespiratory enzymes, requires an increased opening of the stomata with a corresponding decrease in water-use efficiency. It is concluded that photorespiration participates in the regulation of C i/C a and contributes to carbon isotope fractionation, both via effects on stomata and via discrimination of 13C in the glycine decarboxylase reaction. This revised version was published online in October 2005 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

To determine the photosynthetic characteristics of C3 plants and their sensitivity to CO2 at different altitudes on the Tibetan Plateau, hulless barley (Hordeum vulgare L. ssp. vulgare) was grown at altitudes of 4,333 m and 3,688 m. Using gas-exchange measurements, photosynthetic parameters were simulated, including the maximum net photosynthesis (P max) and the apparent quantum efficiency (α). Plants growing at higher altitude had higher net photosynthetic rates (P N), photosynthesis parameters (P max and α) and sensitivities to CO2 enhancement than plants growing at lower altitude on the Tibetan Plateau. The enhancements of P N, P max, and α for plants growing at higher altitude, corresponding with 10 μmol(CO2) mol−1 increments, were approximately 0.20∼0.45%, 0.05∼0.20% and 0.12∼0.36% greater, respectively, than for plants growing at lower altitude, respectively, where CO2 levels rose from 10 to 170 μmol(CO2) mol−1. Therefore, on the Tibetan Plateau, the changes in the photosynthetic capacities and the photosynthetic sensitivities to CO2 observed in the C3 plants grown above 3,688 m are likely to increase with altitude despite the decreasing CO2 partial pressure.  相似文献

Short-term responses of four carrot (Daucus carota) cultivars: Cascade, Caro Choice (CC), Oranza, and Red Core Chantenay (RCC) to CO2 concentrations (C a) were studied in a controlled environment. Leaf net photosynthetic rate (P N), intercellular CO2 (C i), stomatal conductance (g s), and transpiration rate (E) were measured at C a from 50 to 1 050 mol mol–1. The cultivars responded similarly to C a and did not differ in all the variables measured. The P N increased with C a until saturation at 650 mol mol–1 (C i= 350–400 mol mol–1), thereafter P N increased slightly. On average, increasing C a from 350 to 650 and from 350 to 1 050 mol mol–1 increased P N by 43 and 52 %, respectively. The P N vs. C i curves were fitted to a non-rectangular hyperbola model. The cultivars did not differ in the parameters estimated from the model. Carboxylation efficiencies ranged from 68 to 91 mol m–2 s–1 and maximum P N were 15.50, 13.52, 13.31, and 14.96 mol m–2 s–1 for Cascade, CC, Oranza, and RCC, respectively. Dark respiration rate varied from 2.80 mol m–2 s–1 for Oranza to 3.96 mol m–2 s–1 for Cascade and the CO2 compensation concentration was between 42 and 46 mol mol–1. The g s and E increased to a peak at C a= 350 mol mol–1 and then decreased by 17 and 15 %, respectively when C a was increased to 650 mol mol–1. An increase from 350 to 1 050 mol mol–1 reduced g s and E by 53 and 47 %, respectively. Changes in g s and P N maintained the C i:C a ratio. The water use efficiency increased linearly with C a due to increases in P N in addition to the decline in E at high C a. Hence CO2 enrichment increases P N and decreases g s, and can improve carrot productivity and water conservation.  相似文献

The rooting of shoots of micropropagated Rosa hybrida cv. Madame Delbard was conducted on MS medium with 30 kg m–3 sucrose or on hydroponic medium (containing less mineral salts), under higher photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) (100 in comparison with 45 µmol m–2 s–1) and flushed by ambient air [AC, 340 µmol(CO2) mol–1] or by CO2-enriched air (EC, 2 500 µmol mol–1) and lower relative humidity (80–90 % vs. 96–99 %). This cultivation led to plantlets with longer roots and adventitious root formation. Net photosynthetic rate and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (RuBPCO) activities, RuBPCO/phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase activities ratio, and starch accumulation increased under these conditions. After 14 d, plantlets had functional stomata and could be acclimated on open benches without gradual decrease in relative humidity. The percentage of survival was higher when the rooting took place in EC than in AC. However, the advantage acquired during rooting phase by plantlets cultured in liquid medium was not maintained after 4 weeks of acclimatisation.  相似文献

Continually rising atmospheric CO2 concentrations and possible climatic change may cause significant changes in plant communities. This study was undertaken to investigate gas exchange in two important grass species of the short-grass steppe, Pascopyrum smithii (western wheat-grass), C3, and Bouteloua gracilis (blue grama), C4, grown at different CO2 concentrations and temperatures. Intact soil cores containing each species were extracted from grasslands in north-eastern Colorado, USA, placed in growth chambers, and grown at combinations of two CO2 concentrations (350 and 700 μmol mol−1) and two temperature regimes (field average and elevated by 4°C). Leaf gas exchange was measured during the second, third and fourth growth seasons. All plants exhibited higher leaf CO2 assimilation rates (A) with increasing measurement CO2 concentration, with greater responses being observed in the cool-season C3 species P. smithii. Changes in the shape of intercellular CO2 response curves of A for both species indicated photosynthetic acclimation to the different growth environments. The photosynthetic capacity of P. smithii leaves tended to be reduced in plants grown at high CO2 concentrations, although A for plants grown and measured at 700μmol mol−1 CO2 was 41% greater than that in plants grown and measured at 350 μmol mol−1 CO2. Low leaf N concentration may have contributed to photosynthetic acclimation to CO2. A severe reduction in photosynthetic capacity was exhibited in P. smithii plants grown long-term at elevated temperatures. As a result, the potential response of photosynthesis to CO2 enrichment was reduced in P. smithii plants grown long-term at the higher temperature.  相似文献

The effect of ectomycorrhizal Pisolithus tinctorius (Pt) infection was studied on the growth and photosynthetic characteristics of Pinus densiflora seedlings grown at ambient (360 µmol mol−1, AC) and elevated (720 µmol mol−1, EC) CO2 concentrations. After 18 weeks, Pt inoculation had led to significantly increased dry mass and stem diameter of P. densiflora at both CO2 concentrations, relative to non-inoculated seedlings. Moreover, EC significantly increased the ectomycorrhizal development. The phosphate content in needles inoculated with Pt was about three times higher than without inoculation at both CO2 concentrations. The PAR saturated net photosynthetic rates (P sat) of P. densiflora inoculated with Pt were clearly higher than for control seedlings at both CO2 concentrations, and the maximum net photosynthetic rate (P N) at saturated CO2 concentration (P max) was higher than in controls. Moreover, the carboxylation efficiency (CE) and RuBP regeneration rate of the P N/C i curve for P. densiflora inoculated with Pt were significantly higher than for non-inoculated seedlings at both CO2 concentrations, especially at EC. The water use efficiency (WUE) of seedlings inoculated with Pt grown at EC was significantly raised. Allocation of photosynthates to roots was greater in Pt inoculated pine seedlings, because of the enhanced activity of ectomycorrhiza associated with seedlings at EC. Moreover, P N of non-inoculated seedlings grown for 18 weeks at EC tended to be down regulated; in contrast, Pt inoculated seedlings showed no down-regulation at EC. The activity of ectomycorrhiza may therefore be enhanced physiological function related to water and phosphate absorption in P. densiflora seedlings at EC.This study was partly sponsored by the Ministry of Education, Sport, Culture, Science and Technology of Japan (RR2002, Basic Research B and Sprout study).  相似文献

Plants of Solanum curtilobum (from high altitude) and Solanum tuberosum (from low altitude) were grown in open-top chambers in a greenhouse at either ambient (AC, 360 µmol mol–1) or ca. twice ambient (EC, 720 µmol mol–1) CO2 concentrations for 30 d. CO2 treatments started at the reproductive stage of the plants. There were similar patterns in the physiological response to CO2 enrichment in the two species. Stomatal conductance was reduced by 59 % in S. tuberosum and by 55 % in S. curtilobum, but such a reduction did not limit the net photosynthetic rate (P N), which was increased by approximately 56 % in S. curtilobum and 53 % in S. tuberosum. The transpiration rate was reduced by 16 % in both potato species while instantaneous transpiration efficiency increased by 80 % in S. tuberosum and 90 % in S. curtilobum. Plants grown under EC showed 36 and 66 % increment in total dry biomass, whereas yields (dry mass of tubers) were increased by 40 and 85 % in S. tuberosum and S. curtilobum, respectively. EC promoted productivity by increasing P N. Thus S. tuberosum, cultivated around the world at low altitudes, and S. curtilobum, endemic of the highland Andes, respond positively to EC during the tuberisation stage.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to characterise growth and photosynthetic capacity in plants adapted to long-term contrasting atmospheric CO2 concentrations (C a). Seeds of Agrostis canina L. ssp. monteluccii were collected from a natural CO2 transect in central-western Italy and plants grown in controlled environment chambers at both ambient and elevated CO2 (350 and 700 μmol mol−1) in nutrient-rich soil. Seasonal mean C a at the source of the plant material ranged from 610 to 451 μmol CO2 mol−1, derived from C4 leaf stable carbon isotope discrimination (δ13C). Under chamber conditions, CO2 enrichment stimulated the growth of all populations. However, plants originating from elevated C a exhibited higher initial relative growth rates (RGRs) irrespective of chamber CO2 concentrations and a positive relationship was found between RGR and C a at the seed source. Seed weight was positively correlated with C a, but differences in seed weight were found to explain no more than 34% of the variation in RGRs at elevated CO2. Longer-term experiments (over 98 days) on two populations originating from the extremes of the transect (451 and 610 μmol CO2 mol−1) indicated that differences in growth between populations were maintained when plants were grown at both 350 and 700 μmol CO2 mol−1. Analysis of leaf material revealed an increase in the cell wall fraction (CWF) in plants grown at elevated CO2, with plants originating from high C a exhibiting constitutively lower levels but a variable response in terms of the degree of lignification. In vivo gas exchange measurements revealed no significant differences in light and CO2 saturated rates of photosynthesis and carboxylation efficiency between populations or with CO2 treatment. Moreover, SDS-PAGE/ LISA quantification of leaf ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) showed no difference in Rubisco content between populations or CO2 treatments. These findings suggest that long-term adaptation to growth at elevated CO2 may be associated with a potential for increased growth, but this does not appear to be linked with differences in the intrinsic capacity for photosynthesis. This work aimed to evaluate if gas exchange and PSII photochemical activity in maize are affected by different irradiance levels during short-term exposure to elevated CO2. For this purpose gas exchange and chlorophyll a fluorescence were measured on maize plants grown at ambient CO2 concentration (control CO2) and exposed for 4 h to short-term treatments at 800 μmol(CO2) mol−1 (high CO2) at a photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) of either 1,000 μmol m−2 s−1 (control light) or 1,900 μmol m−2 s−1 (high light). At control light, high-CO2 leaves showed a significant decrease of net photosynthetic rate (P N) and a rise in the ratio of intercellular to ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a) and water-use efficiency (WUE) compared to control CO2 leaves. No difference between CO2 concentrations for PSII effective photochemistry (ΦPSII), photochemical quenching (qp) and nonphotochemical quenching (NPQ) was detected. Under high light, high-CO2 leaves did not differ in P N, C i/C a, ΦPSII and NPQ, but showed an increase of WUE. These results suggest that at control light photosynthetic apparatus is negatively affected by high CO2 concentration in terms of carbon gain by limitations in photosynthetic dark reaction rather than in photochemistry. At high light, the elevated CO2 concentration did not promote an increase of photosynthesis and photochemistry but only an improvement of water balance due to increased WUE.  相似文献

Three winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, representatives of those widely cultivated in Beijing over the past six decades, were grown in the same environmental conditions. Net photosynthetic rate (P N) per unit leaf area and instantaneous water use efficiency (WUE) of flag leaves increased with elevated CO2 concentration. With an increase in CO2 concentration from 360 to 720 µmol mol–1, P N and WUE of Jingdong 8 (released in 1990s and having the highest yield) increased by 173 and 81 %, while those of Nongda 139 (released in 1970s) increased by 88 and 66 %, and Yanda 1817 (released in 1945, with lowest yield) by 76 and 65 %. Jingdong 8 had the highest P N and WUE values under high CO2 concentration, but Yanda 1817 showed the lowest P N. Stomatal conductance (g s) of Nongda 139 and Yanda 1817 declined with increasing CO2 concentration, but g s of Jingdong 8 firstly went down and then up as the CO2 concentration further increased. Intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) of Jingdong 8 and Nongda 139 increased when CO2 concentration elevated, while that of Yanda 139 increased at the first stage and then declined. Jingdong 8 had the lowest C i of the three wheat cultivars, and Yanda 1817 had the highest C i value under lower CO2 concentrations. However, Jingdong 8 had the highest P N and lowest C i at the highest CO2 concentration which indicates that its photosynthetic potential may be high.  相似文献

Midday measurements of single leaf gas exchange rates of upper canopy leaves of soybeans grown in the field at 350 (AC) and 700 (EC) µmol(CO2) mol–1 in open topped chambers sometimes indicated up to 50 % higher net photosynthetic rates (P N) measured at EC in plants grown at AC compared to EC. On other days mean P N were nearly identical in the two growth [CO2] treatments. There was no seasonal pattern to the variable photosynthetic responses of soybean to growth [CO2]. Even on days with significantly lower P N in the plants grown at EC, there was no reduction in ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase, chlorophyll, or soluble protein contents per unit of leaf area. Over three years, gas exchange evidence of acclimation occurred on days when either soil was dry or the water vapor pressure deficit was high (n = 12 d) and did not occur on days after rain or on days with low water vapor pressure deficit (n = 9 d). On days when photosynthetic acclimation was evident, midday leaf water potentials were consistently 0.2 to 0.3 MPa lower for the plants grown at EC than at AC. This suggested that greater susceptibility to water stress in plants grown at EC cause the apparent photosynthetic acclimation. In other experiments, plants were grown in well-watered pots in field chambers and removed to the laboratory early in the morning for gas exchange measurements. In these experiments, the amount of photosynthetic acclimation evident in the gas exchange measurements increased with the maximum water vapor pressure deficit on the day prior to the measurements, indicating a lag in the recovery of photosynthesis from water stress. The apparent increase in susceptibility to water stress in soybean plants grown at EC is opposite to that observed in some other species, where photosynthetic acclimation was evident under wet but not dry conditions, and may be related to the observation that hydraulic conductance is reduced in soybeans when grown at EC. The day-to-day variation in photosynthetic acclimation observed here may account for some of the conflicting results in the literature concerning the existence of acclimation to EC in field-grown plants.  相似文献

A controlled growth chamber experiment was conducted to investigate the short-term water use and photosynthetic responses of 30-d-old carrot seedlings to the combined effects of CO2 concentration (50–1 050 μmol mol−1) and moisture deficits (−5, −30, −55, and −70 kPa). The photosynthetic response data was fitted to a non-rectangular hyperbola model. The estimated parameters were compared for effects of moisture deficit and elevated CO2 concentration (EC). The carboxylation efficiency (α) increased in response to mild moisture stress (−30 kPa) under EC when compared to the unstressed control. However, moderate (−55 kPa) and extreme (−70 kPa) moisture deficits reduced α under EC. Maximum net photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) did not differ between mild water deficit and unstressed controls under EC. Moderate and extreme moisture deficits reduced P Nmax by nearly 85 % compared to controls. Dark respiration rate (R D) showed no consistent response to moisture deficit. The CO2 compensation concentration (Γ) was 324 μmol mol−1 for −75 kPa and ranged 63–93 μmol mol−1 for other moisture regimes. Interaction between moisture deficit and EC was noticed for P N, ratio of intercellular and ambient CO2 concentration (C i/C a), stomatal conductance (g s ), and transpiration rate (E). P N was maximum and C i/C a was minimum at −30 kPa moisture deficit and at C a of 350 μmol mol−1. The g s and E showed an inverse relationship at all moisture deficit regimes and EC. Water use efficiency (WUE) increased with moisture deficit up to −55 kPa and declined thereafter. EC showed a positive influence towards sustaining P N and increasing WUE only under mild moisture stress, and no beneficial effects of EC were noticed at moderate or extreme moisture deficits.  相似文献

The long-term impact of elevated concentration of CO2 on assimilation activity of sun-exposed (E) versus shaded (S) foliage was investigated in a Norway spruce stand [Picea abies (L.) Karst, age 14 years] after three years of cultivation in two domes with adjustable windows (DAW). One DAW was supplied with ambient air [AC, ca. 350 µmol(CO2) mol–1) and the second with elevated CO2 concentration [EC = AC plus 350 µmol(CO2) mol–1]. The pronounced vertical profile of the photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) led to the typical differentiation of the photosynthetic apparatus between the shaded and sun needles. Namely, photon-saturated values of maximal net photosynthetic rate (P Nmax) and apparent quantum yield () were significantly higher/lower for E-needles as compared with the S-ones. The prolonged exposure to EC was responsible for the apparent assimilatory activity stimulation observed mainly in deeply shaded needles. The degree of this stimulation decreases in the order: S-needles dense part > S-needles sparse part > E-needles dense part > E-needles sparse part. In exposed needles some signals on a manifestation of the acclimation depression of the photosynthetic activity were found. The long-term effect of EC was responsible for the decrease of nitrogen content of needles and for its smoother gradient between E- and S-needles. The obtained results indicate that the E- and S-foliage respond differently to the long-term impact of EC.  相似文献
