Serum corticosterone was previously studied in numerous elasmobranch fishes (sharks, skates and rays), but the role of this steroid, widespread throughout many taxa, has yet to be defined. The goal of this study was to test whether corticosterone varied in response to acute and chronic capture stress, and across the reproductive cycle in the bonnethead shark, Sphyrna tiburo, and Atlantic stingray, Dasyatis sabina. Serum corticosterone in S. tiburo increased following capture and again 24 h post-capture, possibly caused by interference with 1α-hydroxycorticosterone, the primary stress hormone in elasmobranchs. Higher serum concentrations in males compared to females were observed in both species. Variations in corticosterone also occurred during the reproductive cycle in both species. Consistent with other taxa, elevations in male bonnethead sharks and stingrays coincided with peak testicular development and mating. Elevations in female bonnethead sharks occurred from the time of mating through sperm storage into early gestation. In contrast, corticosterone levels in female stingrays were low during their protracted mating season, but elevated through late gestation and parturition. These results indicate that corticosterone has a limited role, if any, in acute and chronic stress associated with capture in S. tiburo, but likely has physiological functions associated with its glucocorticoid properties across the reproductive cycle of both species. 相似文献

Corticosterone concentrations were measured in captive house sparrows (Passer domesticus) and found to vary both daily and with different photoperiods. Basal corticosterone was highest during the dark hours of the daily cycle and lowest during the light hours. This trend remained constant when the birds were held on short-day and long-day light cycles, and while the birds were undergoing a prebasic molt. At all times, corticosterone concentrations significantly increased in response to the stress of handling and restraint. Stress-induced corticosterone concentrations, however, only reflected a daily rhythm when the birds were held on short-days. Furthermore, even though mean basal corticosterone concentrations were equivalent over the short-day, long-day, and molt, total corticosterone output in response to stress was lower in molting birds, especially at night. Therefore, these data indicate that captive house sparrows modulate corticosterone in daily cycles that change in response to photoperiod. 相似文献

We compared the activity and responsiveness of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis of an urban (Phoenix, Arizona) and desert population of a male songbird species (Curve-billed Thrasher, Toxostoma curvirostre), by measuring plasma corticosterone in response to acute administration of corticotropin-releasing factor, arginine vasotocin, or adrenocorticotropin hormone. Urban adult male thrashers showed greater responsiveness than desert birds to an injection of arginine vasotocin or adrenocorticotropin hormone, suggesting a population difference in pituitary and adrenal gland sensitivity. Plasma corticosterone in response to corticotropin-releasing factor injection did, however, not differ between populations. The differential corticosterone response to arginine vasotocin and corticotropin-releasing factor may reflect effects of chronic stress or habituation, which are known to favor arginine vasotocin over corticotropin-releasing factor sensitivity. Efficacy of HPA negative feedback by glucocorticoids was determined by measuring plasma corticosterone in response to acute administration of the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone. This administration decreased plasma corticosterone similarly in urban and desert thrashers, suggesting that the negative feedback of glucocorticoids on the HPA axis in the two populations was equally effective. The higher sensitivity of urban than desert thrashers to adrenocorticotropin hormone and arginine vasotocin may result from up-regulation of the HPA axis in urban birds. Glucocorticoids have a wide array of actions in vertebrates. Daily fluctuations in basal levels of glucocorticoids are thought to regulate homeostatic mechanisms. In contrast, elevated levels secreted in response to stress stimulate changes in physiology and behavior. These changes are thought to aid an animal in avoiding chronic stress or death. Twenty-four-hour rhythms in basal and stress-induced glucocorticoids have been detected in laboratory mammals, but studies in wild, seasonal vertebrates are rare. Identification of plasticity in hormone secretion in wild vertebrates is critical to understanding the effects of hormones on physiology and behavior, and therefore the success of an animal in its natural environment. In the present study, we characterized diel patterns of basal and stress-induced corticosterone (the avian glucocorticoid) under two photoperiods in Gambel's white-crowned sparrow (Zonotrichia leucophrys gambelii). In contrast to previous findings in the white-crowned sparrow, we demonstrated a robust rhythm in basal corticosterone secretion, in which corticosterone reaches peak levels at the end of the inactive period, and has returned to trough levels just after the active period has begun. We also demonstrated a diel rhythm in secretion of corticosterone in response to a stressor, showing the greatest response at the beginning of the active period. Patterns of CORT secretion were similar under both photoperiods. These patterns show interesting similarities and differences to classical mammalian rhythms. 相似文献

Turkey embryos grown in shell-less culture (EO) display normal development to day 14 of incubation, after which growth rate is reduced and mortality increases, compared to age-matched in ovo (IO) embryos (Richards 1982. Long term shell-less culture of turkey embryos. Poultry Sci. 61, 2089-2096). 2. In this study serum corticosterone concentrations were monitored in normally incubated embryos and embryos maintained in shell-less culture. 3. On days 14 and 16 of incubation, corticosterone levels were greater (P less than 0.05) in EO than IO embryos, whereas during the later stages corticosterone increased dramatically in the shelled embryos, and remained relatively constant in the EO embryos. 4. EO embryos do not exhibit a pattern of adrenal hormonal secretion that would indicated a stressful condition. 5. The absence of a normal increase in corticosterone in shell-less embryos may contribute to the abnormal embryological development in the later stages of incubation. 相似文献

1. Plasma corticosterone concentrations were determined in the foetal rat during the gestational period from day 18·5 to term and in postnatal rats over the first few hours after delivery. 2. The plasma corticosterone concentrations in foetal rats are as high as six times maternal values at day 19 of gestation and are approximately equal to maternal values from day 20 to term. 3. In postnatal rats the plasma corticosterone concentrations rise 3·5-fold on average within 5hr. of delivery. 4. A double-antibody heterologous radioimmunoassay (RIA) was developed to measure plasma LH values in hedgehogs. This RIA system used anti-rat LH serum and rabbit LH (AFP-559B) for radioiodination and as standard. The accuracy of the method was evaluated and indicated the ability to detect various relative concentrations of LH in plasma. The minimum detectable dose was 0.2 ng/ml. The intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation were 4.2 and 7.9% respectively. Biological tests, e.g. effect of castration, effect of castration + testosterone implant and GnRH administration, confirmed that this method was suitable to determine subsequent changes in pituitary gonadotrophic activity in the hedgehog. LH concentrations were determined in blood samples obtained during 1 year: (a) each month, at 4-h intervals during 24 h, from different groups of unanaesthetized animals fitted with a catheter and (b) twice a month, under a light anaesthesia, from the same group of 6 animals. During the year: (1) the range of LH change was narrow (minimum values congruent to 0.25 ng/ml and maximum values congruent to 2.00 ng/ml); (2) the 24-h LH patterns did not exhibit any daily rhythm; (3) a clear annual rhythm was observed with the highest values from February to April and the lowest values in October and November. LH decreased rapidly at the end of summer and increased progressively from December to February, during hibernation. In these experiments, it was not possible to determine the characteristics of LH release patterns in the hedgehog but individual profiles indicated clearly the episodic secretion of LH, particularly during the highest pituitary activity period. Recently, we described the complete nucleotide sequence of gamma-preprotachykinin (gamma-PPT) mRNA and the deduced amino acid sequence of the precursor on the basis of molecular cloning and sequence analysis of cDNA from goldfish brain. In the present study, gamma-PPT gene expression in the brain of goldfish was examined using quantitative Northern blot analysis. The results showed that the gamma-PPT gene is highly but differentially expressed in the olfactory bulbs, hypothalamus, and posterior brain regions. There are sexual dimorphism and seasonal variations in gamma-PPT gene expression. In addition, the postprandial changes in gamma-PPT gene expression in the olfactory bulbs and hypothalamus suggest that tachykinin peptides are involved in regulation of feeding behavior in goldfish. 相似文献

Plasma ACTH and corticosterone (B) concentration, ACTH content in the anterior pituitary gland and B content in the adrenals were measured in intact, gonadectomised and testosterone or estradiol replaced rats. Plasma ACTH and B levels and adrenal B content were higher in female than male rats. Neither orchiectomy nor testosterone replacement had an effect on plasma ACTH and B concentration. Orchiectomy did not affect adrenal B content and decreased pituitary ACTH while testosterone significantly lowered ACTH and B content in studied glands. On the other hand ovariectomy did not change pituitary ACTH and adrenal B content and notably lowered concentrations of these hormones in the blood. Estradiol replacement resulted in an increase in plasma ACTH and B concentrations, an effect accompanied by a marked drop in pituitary ACTH and an increase in adrenal B. These findings indicate the distinct sex differences in basal plasma ACTH and B concentrations with higher values in female rats, an effect dependent on the stimulatory action of estradiol on pituitary-adrenocortical axis. 相似文献

Many studies, but not all, suggest that immigrant health worsens with duration of residence in the United States. Cohort effects may explain the inconsistent findings; not only are cohort effects confounded with duration, but the timing of entry into the United States may also create qualitatively different migration experiences. The present study tests for duration and cohort patterns among Asian immigrants to the United States across six year-of-entry cohorts (pre-1980, 1981–85, 1986–90, 1991–95, 1996–2000, 2001–05). Data come from the Asian American sample (n = 44,002) of the 1994–2009 waves of the National Health Interview Survey. The data show cohort differences for self-rated health, such that more recent cohorts showed improved baseline health compared to older cohorts. After accounting for cohorts, there was no significant change in self-rated health by duration of residence. Older cohorts actually showed improving self-rated health with longer duration. Obesity showed the opposite pattern; there were no differences across cohorts, but duration in the United States correlated with higher obesity. These results imply that immigrant health is not simply an issue of duration and adaptation; instead, they underscore the utility of considering cohorts as broader contexts of migration. Collectively, the results encourage future research that more carefully examines the etiological mechanisms that drive immigrant health. 相似文献

Groups of sexually-naive male NFR/N mice were maintained at sea level or exposed to simulated altitudes of 18 000 ft (5486 m) or 22 000 ft (6705 m) for 1, 3, 7, 14 or 28 days. Plasma LH concentrations were slightly but not significantly depressed after 1 day of hypoxia. Plasma FSH values were reduced (P < 0.05) after 1, 7, 14 and 28 days of exposure to 22 000 ft when compared to the values in the other groups. Prolactin concentrations fluctuated considerably, but were not uniformly affected by high altitude exposure. Exposure to 18 000 ft resulted in an elevation of plasma corticosterone concentration (P < 0.05) for 3 days, which was followed by a decline to control group values, whereas at 22 000 ft corticosterone levels remained elevated. These findings indicate that plasma LH values are transiently reduced during the initial 24 h of exposure to high altitude and that plasma FSH concentrations are depressed in a sustained manner during severe hypoxia. 相似文献

Because some recent studies of hamster adrenocortical function have depended on older studies that may have been inadequate or misinterpreted, the present study re-examined plasma corticosterone and cortisol concentrations in hamsters under several conditions to determine which plasma glucocorticoid predominated in this animal. Sensitive radioimmunoassays were used to measure separately the two glucocorticoids in the basal condition, after adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) treatment, after acute stress, and after chronic stress. In the basal condition, corticosterone concentrations were 3-4 times higher than those of cortisol. After stimulation, this difference disappeared, but rarely were any hamster's cortisol levels higher than their corticosterone levels. Both ACTH and acute stress elevated plasma corticosterone and cortisol concentrations, but only plasma cortisol concentrations were elevated following chronic stress. The dissociation between cortisol and corticosterone concentrations after chronic stress suggests that the two glucocorticoid hormones in the hamster may be regulated independently. The data also indicate that both corticosterone and cortisol should be measured when assessing adrenocortical function in the hamster. 相似文献
