The degree of oligophagy in Locusta migratoria (L.)   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
  • 1 Locusta migratoria in the field feeds mainly on grasses, including cultivated species, but there are numerous reports of feeding on other monocotyledons. Feeding on dicotyledons is reported, but in many cases non-grasses are only accepted in the absence of grasses. Previous laboratory work also indicates that grasses comprise the main food, though other plants are eaten.
  • 2 Field observations on nymphal bands in Australia show that the insects select grasses within the habitat; dicotyledons are generally rejected.
  • 3 The feeding response to 209 species of plants from fifty-six families was tested. The grasses and some Cyperaceae and Juncaceae were generally fully eaten. Some other monocotyledons, such as palms, were also accepted though only small amounts were eaten; orchids and lilies were rejected. Very few dicotyledons were eaten. The dicotyledons which were eaten after 5h without food were rejected after only 1 h; the grasses were readily accepted after the shorter interval
  • 4 The degree of oligophagy depends on the choice of food available and the time for which the insect has been deprived of food and water. Grass is normally eaten if available; in its absence, insects which have been without food for some hours will feed on a wide range of plants, but the amounts eaten are usually small.

Toxicants may cause insects to avoid a bait, and yet bait efficacy is dependent upon insects ingesting it in adequate quantities. Amounts ingested are, in turn, determined by meal frequency, meal durations and ingestion rate within meals, but to date no report has been made of these variables for domestic cockroaches. We report an experiment in which sixth instar German cockroach, Blattella germanica, nymphs were initially able to self-select their protein and carbohydrate intake independently, then daily at the start of the scotophase some insects had their choice of foods replaced by a single treatment food, which varied through the presence or absence of protein, carbohydrate, and insecticide. Insect behaviour was recorded for the following 5 h, and the data were subsequently subjected to bout analysis in order to identify discrete meals. The age of insects in days on first exposure to a treatment food (`age') and the amount of food eaten in the observation period were both recorded and included in the analysis. Amounts eaten were affected by insect age and food nutrient content, but not by the presence of insecticide. Toxicant effects were, however, seen on average meal duration and meal frequency, in interactions with age and food nutrient effects. These results suggest ways in which direct observations of behaviours may lead to improved bait design.  相似文献

This report describes observations on the ontogeny of food choice in mountain gorillas (Gorilla gorilla beringei), made during a 17-month field study of mountain gorilla feeding ecology in the Parc National des Volcans, Rwanda. Data are presented on the feeding behavior of two infants observed from birth to the age of 8 months and on older infants and juveniles. This information is compared with data on the composition and diversity of the diets of young adults and adults in the same social group. Initial feeding by infants is usually synchronized with the mother's behavior: infants ingest the same food, or a different part of the same plant species, currently being eaten by the mother or just eaten by her. This suggests that observational learning is largely responsible for the transmission of food preferences. Most feeding by young infants, whether or not synchronized with the mother's, is on those foods eaten most frequently by adults. Infants also independently sample potential foods, some of which are apparently not consumed by adults. The frequency of sampling declines with age, although even adults occasionally ingest foods not observed to be eaten by other adults. By the age of 3 years, young mountain gorillas have developed the basic dietary patterns of adults, in terms of the number of foods eaten, the proportions in which specific foods are consumed, and diet diversity and equitability. There is a strong possibility that chemical cues influence food choice, but their role remains unclear.  相似文献

The habitat and plant feeding of 64 well-habituated, individually identified adult male and female yellow baboons was studied for 5 years at Mikumi National Park, Tanzania. Variation across the years showed that a study of only one or two years would have been incomplete and misleading. The list of baboon food species obtained from Mikumi is considerably larger and more diverse than any previously reported. One to six plant parts were eaten from each of more than 180 species. The 25 most common tree genera all contained species used for food. Of the 50 most common grass, shrub and herb genera, 93% included plant foods. Using months in which a species was eaten during at least one year of the study, 21 staple species were eaten during a mean of 8.86 months and 7 were eaten in all 12 months. Although many foods were from commonly available plant species, 15 such species were only rarely eaten. The number of parts of a species eaten per month and an estimate of the amounts eaten per month both varied with temperature and rainfall, being lowest near the end of the cool, dry season. There were substantial differences from year to year in the timing and amount of food production of many species; nevertheless, the same broad feeding pattern was repeated in each of the 5 years of the study. Despite yearly variation in food availability, 14 or more staples and other common foods were eaten in any given month. If crops of many of these foods were to fail, a large number of less commonly eaten species could be substituted. Baboons are eclectic feeders that appear to be optimizing their diet by selective feeding from among a wide array of available foods in an ever-changing floristic environment.  相似文献

We review 69 studies of the diet of Badgers Meles meles L. in the former Soviet Union, using information from 58 Russian-language papers. Animal foods occurred more frequently in the diet than vegetal foods and constituted, on average, 62% of all intake by volume. The most important individual food categories were insects (30% by volume) and small mammals (20% by volume), which appear to be staple foods of Badgers over virtually the whole of the former Soviet Union. Earthworms were mentioned in only a few reports and never exceeded 5% of the diet by volume. Other animal foods included birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, molluscs and carrion. Fruits were seasonally important in some areas while roots, tubers, bulbs, cereals and nuts were also eaten; but in general, the Soviet literature lacks detailed information about vegetal foods. Many authors comment on seasonal variation in the diet and there was statistically significant seasonal variation in the frequency with which small mammals, reptiles, insects and vegetal foods were eaten. No largescale geographical trends were apparent in the composition of the diet, but foods which were of minor importance overall, such as reptiles, amphibians and molluscs, were sometimes eaten with high frequency in particular localities. The results support the view that Badgers are opportunistic, generalist foragers, with a preference for animal foods when these are available.  相似文献

Capsule Seeds of plants from lower salt marsh communities are preferred, with insects less important.

Methods Droppings of Shorelarks Eremophila alpestris, Snow Buntings Plectrophenax nivalis and Twites Carduelis flavirostris sampled in the German Wadden Sea were analysed and compared with food abundance to assess preferences.

Results Shorelarks prefer seeds of Salicornia sp., Suaeda maritima, Atriplex sp., Halimione portulacoides and unidentified small grass seeds. Insects are eaten mainly in periods of seed shortage, but are consumed in smaller amounts during the winter. The food composition of Snow Buntings is very similar, but additionally Triglochin maritimum is commonly eaten. Twites are specialized on seeds of Salicornia sp. and Suaeda maritima and rarely ingest other seeds and insects. All seeds consumed were of plants from lower salt marsh communities. Many halophyte seeds, and especially those that birds feed on, are rich in energy. Large seeds and those which need a long handling time are avoided.

Conclusion Changes in the lower salt marshes of the Wadden Sea by embankments and intensified grazing might have been responsible for the rapid population decline from the 1960s to 1980s.  相似文献

Summary The natural diet of a population of Cepaea nemoralis living in a sand dune system in southwest England was investigated by field observations and examination of crop and faeces contents. The food consisted of dead material from the commoner plants on the site. Very little green matter was eaten and there was little evidence for seasonal variation in the diet.Consumption and egestion rates were measured gravimetrically on natural foods (dead leaves of Taraxacum officinale and Ononis repens) and artificial foods. Consumption rates were temperature dependent over the measured range of 5–20°C and also varied with the food substrate, an artificial food (rat food pellets) being consumed at the highest rate. High variability in the results can probably be linked to the live weight and activity cycles of the snails.Assimilation was estimated as the difference between consumption and egestion, since a trial of the ash-ratio method proved unsuitable with this animal. Assimilation efficiency did not vary with temperature over the range studied, but was dependent on food substrate, the two artificial foods (rat food pellets and lettuce leaves) being assimilated more efficiently (71–73%) than natural foods (30–44%).Faeces produced from the digestive gland could be distinguished and were measured separately. The amount produced was very small compared to the gut faeces, but increased significantly when a relatively indigestible food was used.  相似文献

Common types of plant defense mechanisms are thought to affect the host ranges of polyphagous herbivorous insects, yet few studies have examined the relationship between host plant suitability for polyphagous insects and defense against them. We investigated the suitability of the 19 plant species growing in the habitat of the polyphagous grasshopper, Parapodisma subastris, to determine the relationship between the physical characteristics of leaves and the growth and survival of grasshopper nymphs. We examined leaf toughness, trichome density, and length. Nymph survival was greater on plants with characteristics ranging from soft leaves and dense trichomes to tough leaves and few trichomes than on plants with soft leaves and few trichomes. The exception was Rorippa indica, a plant with soft leaves and few trichomes that uses biotic defense, on which nymph survival was maximal. Higher-quality plants that share common physical characteristics over families may favor polyphagy by grasshoppers that possess ability to overcome the physical defense easily with their robust mandibles. An erratum to this article can be found at  相似文献

We compared day-journey length and daily diets of solitary male gorillas in lowland versus highland habitats. Solitary males in tropical forests of Zaire tend to travel longer distances, to visit more types of vegetation, and to consume more kinds of food than a solitary male mountain gorilla in the Virunga Volcanoes did. The number of feeding sites per day is larger and the mean distance between feeding sites is far longer for the former than the latter. These observations may reflect differences in food breadth and availability between highland and lowland habitats. The herbaceous plants that are eaten by mountain gorillas are densely and evenly distributed in the higher montane forest of the Virungas, where gorillas need not cover long distances to search for food. In contrast, herbaceous plants are scarce in primary and ancient secondary forests of lowland habitats, where gorillas travel long distances and eat various fruits and insects. The patchy and unpredictable distribution of foods may extend the distances over which gorillas search for food in the lowland habitat. However, solitary males showed a prominent reduction in day-journey length and changed their choices of food during the nonfruiting season (the long rainy and dry seasons) in the lowland habitats. This strategy may have developed during the Pleistocene and may have enabled them to enlarge their ranges to the higher montane forests, where fruits are sparse throughout the year.  相似文献

Phytochemical or nutrient analyses of primate diets have revealed clues to their food selection in a single species. On the other hand, few interspecific comparisons of phytochemical or nutrient composition of primate diets have been made, although diets are considered to differ in phytochemical or nutrient content from primate species to species, since different species have different body weights and different morphological and physiological characteristics. I compared the nutrient content of diet between patas monkeys (Erythrocebus patas) and tantalus monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops tantalus) living sympatrically in Cameroon. Patas subsisted on a smaller number of food items, most of which were also tantalus food items. Then, I compared the protein–fiber ratio and the available energy content of the food items eaten by patas (patas foods) with those items eaten only by tantalus (tantalus foods). Both variables were higher in patas than tantalus foods, although there was no significant difference in available energy of plant foods. Next, when I performed discriminant analysis for patas foods and tantalus foods, employing the above two variables, a discriminant function with positive coefficients for both variables was obtained. The mean discriminant-function score of patas foods was higher than that of tantalus foods. Despite being somewhat larger in weight, patas selectively fed on a smaller number of foods of higher quality than did tantalus. I discuss why the results are inconsistent with a well known body weight–diet relationship (Jarman–Bell principle). Energy-efficient locomotion enables patas to exploit not only small dispersed food items of high quality but also areas where high-quality foods are distributed in clumps. Predators and parasitoids may contribute to controlling the population sizes of phytophagous insects, and this has been shown to benefit plants. Phytophagous insects may also be killed by other herbivores (intraguild predation), usually larger-sized vertebrates that ingest insects accidentally while feeding on common food sources. We studied the intraguild predation on acorn weevils by ungulates and assessed the consequences for weevil populations. Infested acorns are prematurely abscised and the weevil larvae finish their development inside the acorns after being dropped. Our results show that weevil larvae were killed by ungulates eating the infested acorns on the ground. Ungulates did not discriminate between infested and sound acorns, and the probability of a larva being incidentally eaten was inversely related to acorn availability. Thus, predation risk was enhanced by the premature drop of infested acorns when acorn availability on the ground was low. Predation rates on infested acorns were much higher where ungulates were present, and acorn infestation rates were significantly lower. However, ungulates did not provide the oaks any net benefit, since the reduction of infestation rates was not enough to compensate for the large amounts of sound acorns eaten by ungulates. Seed predation is usually studied as a progressive loss of seeds by pre- and post-dispersal predators, but the interactions between them are usually not considered. We show that intraguild predation on insects by large ungulates had an effect on the structure of the foraging guild, as the proportion of acorns predated by insects decreased; however, replicating the same experimental design in different ecological scenarios would increase the strength of these results. In conclusion, the present study shows the importance of considering the multi-trophic interactions between seed predators in order to have a complete picture of granivory.  相似文献

Ontogenetic shifts from insect consumption by juveniles to plant consumption by adults are rare in the herbivorous lizard family Iguanidae. My investigations on diet and digestive tract anatomy of the iguanid lizard Ctenosaura pectinata show that this species has an ontogenetic diet shift. Insects were rare in adult diets but constituted 86.5% (by volume) of the food eaten by the smallest juveniles. All age classes ate some plant parts from a range of plant types, but flowers and leaves of legumes were a primarily food source. Non-adult lizards had the widest food niche breadths. Arthropods in the diet of juveniles and immatures covaried seasonally with the decline of arthropod abundance. Several hypotheses could explain this ontogenetic plasticity in diet. I rejected hypotheses that gut structure constrained juveniles to an arthropod diet and that insect consumption was purely an artifact of plant consumption because (1) size-adjusted gut morphology and capacity was similar among age classes, and (2) no food plants sampled had an excessive density of arthropods. I supported an alternative hypothesis that juveniles can eat plants but do not because insects provide a more nutritious diet. This conclusion was based on the observation that the juvenile hindgut is similar to that of herbivorous adults, and the propensity for juveniles to consume primarily, but not exclusively, insects when they were most abundant. The hindgut represents the site of fermentative plant fiber breakdown in many herbivorous lizards. Insect foods can compensate for size-related nutritional needs (energy and protein) and digestive limitations in juveniles. Opportunistic feeding to maintain a broad diet might help juvenile and immature lizards through high-predation-risk growth periods by reducing searching costs, increasing nutritional and energetic gains due to associative effects, and increasing new food exposure. ABSTRACT The influence of simultaneously varying the levels in artificial diets of protein, digestible carbohydrate (14% or 28%) and tannic acid (absent or 10%) on the feeding behaviour of the oligophagous Locusta migratoria (L.) and the polyphagous Schistocerca gregaria (Forskal) (Acrididae) was investigated. Total consumption and detailed feeding behaviour were recorded over a 12 h period in choice and no-choice experiments. In addition, amounts eaten by Schistocerca of the 14% protein, 14% carbohydrate diet with and without tannic acid were measured at regular intervals throughout the fifth stadium, and insect growth over this period was recorded. There were no interactive effects of nutrient levels and tannic acid, despite the fact that both species compensated for dilution of dietary protein by increasing consumption. Only male Locusta compensated for dilution of dietary carbohydrates, and this compensation was much less marked than for protein. Tannic acid did influence feeding as a main effect, however. It caused an increase in amounts eaten by Schistocerca in both choice and no-choice experiments. This increased consumption was due to an increase in the number of meals taken. A shorter latency period before and a longer duration of the first meal by naive insects suggested a phagostimulatory rather than a post-ingestive effect of tannic acid. The stimulatory effect was only apparent for the first 24 h of continuous exposure, but this temporary enhancement none the less resulted in the insects being heavier at adult ecdysis. Stadium duration was also somewhat reduced. In a no-choice situation, no effect of tannic acid on the feeding behaviour of Locusta was observed. When given a choice, however, this species took significantly more meals on the tannic acid-free diet, these being of similar average size to meals taken on the tannic acid diet. Significantly more insects took their first meals on the tannic acid-free diet in the choice test, indicating a deterrent effect of tannic acid in Locusta.  相似文献

1. The diet of wild boar Sus scrofa in Western Europe is reviewed, paying particular attention to the consumption of agricultural crops and the implications of this from the point of view of crop damage. Data were taken mainly from 11 studies that provide quantitative information about the consumption of different food types, but we also list all the foods reported as being eaten by wild boar in a total of 21 studies. 2. Vegetable foods occurred more frequently in the diet than animal foods, and also constituted the bulk of the food ingested. Overall, there were four major vegetable food categories: mast, roots, green plant matter and agricultural crops. Depending on the study area, wild boar always consumed at least one energy‐rich plant food such as acorns, beechnuts, chestnuts, pine seeds, olives, cereal grains or other crops. The number and types of agricultural crops consumed varied between study areas but crops represent an important component of wild boar diet throughout its Western European range. Among animal foods, insects, earthworms, birds and mammals were eaten most consistently but the diet also included amphibians, reptiles, gastropods and myriapods. 3. Seasonal, interannual and regional differences in the diet, together with its striking overall breadth, indicate that wild boar are opportunistic omnivores whose diet, in any particular instance, is largely determined by the relative availability of different food types. Dependence on energy‐rich plant material as a major component of the diet, coupled with large body size and a propensity to trample crops as well as consume them, means that wild boar cause significant agricultural damage.  相似文献

The food preferences of a population of opossums in 4.4 ha of lowland broadleaf/podocarp forest were studied for 4 years by faecal analysis. A survey and phenological records were made of the vegetation to compare foods eaten with foods available. Metrosideros robusta and Weinmannia racemosa contributed 60% to the leaf diet, and were being defoliated and killed by opossums. Metrosideros fulgens and Ripogonum scandens, both lianes, together contributed 15 % to the leaf diet but were eaten seasonally. About 10 other species contributed small amounts. Flowers, flower buds, fruit, seeds, bark, and petiole made up about 35 % of the total diet. Compared with their status in the same area 30 years ago, Fuchsia excorticata, Alectryon excelsus, Pseudopanax arboreum, Myrsine salicina, and Coriaria arborea are now rare or localised and of much less consequence in the diet.  相似文献

Focal-animal feeding data obtained from 64 adult baboons during a 3-year period were used together with equivalent data from 46 infants to evaluate hypotheses predicting selection for a birth peak and to study the baboon’s eclectic/selective feeding adaptation, with emphasis on differential feeding by sex, developmental trends, and seasonal use of food classes (fruit, leaf, flower, grass, etc.). The findings suggest that feeding conditions are better in the wet season than in the dry season. Despite large sexual dimorphism, estimates of total amounts eaten were virtually identical for males and females. Infants used all of the same plant-food classes as adults, but proportional differences occurred for some food classes in amounts eaten. Foods eaten proportionately less by infants were probably harder for them to obtain and process or were chosen through inexperience or for exploration. There was considerable between-year variation in amounts of food classes eaten, but the within-year standard deviations were similar, as were also the mean amounts eaten per year. An eclectic/selective feeding adaptation has the advantage of permitting long-run acquisition of adequate nutrition within a context of high feeding variation from season to season and year to year. Mixed results were obtained from hypotheses about selection for a birth peak. Although a peak occurred in the early dry season, this was not the optimal time of birth for survival. Survival was highest for individuals born in the late wet season, when the availability and probably the quality of food for lactating mothers were greatest.  相似文献

Foods eaten by gorillas (Gorilla beringei) in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (BINP), Uganda, were analyzed for their nutrient content. The goal of the study was to assess the amounts of fiber, protein, and sugars in the foods eaten by the Bwindi gorillas, and to determine whether condensed tannins and cyanide are present in these foods. A total of 127 food plant parts representing 84 plant species eaten by two groups of Bwindi gorillas were collected, processed, and analyzed for their chemical contents. The Bwindi gorilla ate foods that contain 2-28% crude protein (CP), 21-88% neutral detergent fiber (NDF), 14-60% acid detergent fiber (ADF), 2-42% acid detergent lignin (ADL), and 相似文献

To understand the ways in which condensed tannins (CT) affect primate diet selection and nutritional status, correct measurements are essential. In the majority of studies of the CT contents of primate foods, a tannin source such as "quebracho" is used to standardize CT assays, but the CT in quebracho tannin may not be similar to those in the plants of interest. We investigated how the choice of standard to calibrate CT assays affects the estimation of CT in the diets of mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei). We purified the CT from gorilla foods and compared the actual amounts of CT in the foods with estimates produced by using the quebracho tannin. When quebracho was used, the estimates of CT contents of gorilla foods were, on average, 3.6 times the actual content of CT so that the amounts in frequently eaten gorilla foods were substantially overestimated. The overestimation for a given plant could not be predicted reliably and the ranking of plants by tannin content differed according to the standard used. Our results demonstrate that accurate measurements of CT necessitate the use of tannins purified from the plant species of interest. A reevaluation of primatology studies using interspecific comparisons of tannin content will provide new insights into primate food selection and nutritional ecology.  相似文献

Host prefeeding and acceptance behavior of herbivorous insects may strongly differ depending upon the plant species and previous experience. We examined prefeeding behaviors and acceptance of host and non-host plants by the beetle Phaedon cochleariae in populations with different rearing histories using a camera. Suitable host plants evoked short test biting followed by long feeding durations indicating that these first contacts provide sufficient information to stimulate feeding. In contrast, plants of intermediate quality caused prolonged test biting but feeding duration was rather low. When offered unsuitable plants, beetles showed only rare leaf contacts and test biting, demonstrating that test biting behavior is a useful measure of plant suitability. Rearing history had a minor influence on host plant exploitation behavior.  相似文献
