Host-parasite interactions of the intestinal trematode Echinostoma caproni were studied in ICR laboratory mice. All of 40 mice, each fed 25 metacercarial cysts of Echinostoma caproni, were infected 1-20 wk postinfection (PI) with a mean of 17.2 worms/host. At 24 and 29 wk PI only 2 of 6 mice (33%) were infected, with a mean of 4.2 worms/host. Mean body area of worms increased rapidly to about 5 mm2 by week 2, increased less rapidly to 8.8 mm2 by week 12, plateaued until week 24, and then declined. Mean dry weight of worms increased rapidly to about 0.5 mg by week 2, less rapidly to 1.4 mg by week 12, and then plateaued until week 24 PI. From 1 to 8 wk PI most worms localized in the jejunum and ileum; later most worms were in the jejunum and duodenum. Considerable differences were seen in the growth and distribution of E. caproni in the ICR mouse compared with previous studies on this echinostome species in the NMRI mouse.  相似文献

Abstract. Life-history attributes and the reproductive biology of Enchytraeus coronatus (Oligochaeta, Enchytraeidae) were studied in agar cultures, as a basis for using this species in toxicity tests and other experimental studies. The use of agar allows daily examination of the behavior, reproduction, and mortality of the worms. At 20°C, E. coronatus had a generation time of 21–22 days and an embryonic period of 7–10 days. Hatch rate was high (>80%) and worms became sexually mature 8–10 days after hatching. Cocoon production and number of eggs per cocoon were positively correlated. Mortality in the first stages of the life cycle (embryonic period and first week after hatching) was about 38%. Three different periods of cocoon production were distinguished: a period characterized by a regular increase in the number of cocoons produced (weeks 4–9), a period of production at a constant high rate of ∼5 cocoons per week (weeks 10–20), and a period of decline in production rate (weeks 21–32), down to a mean value of 1.6 cocoons per adult in the last week. This study showed that synchronized agar cultures of cohorts can provide adults for long-term experimental tests, with the age for optimum reproduction being 8–20 weeks.  相似文献

Earthworms, Eisenia fetida, were exposed to soils spiked with As(III) and As(V), to understand the response of earthworms to As in terms of both toxicity and accumulation using toxicokinetics, and to explain As metabolism and bioavailability. As(III) showed higher toxicity than As(V), in all toxicity endpoints of burrowing time, survival, growth, and cocoon production. Bioconcentration occurred at both As(III) and As(V) treatments during 28-d exposure. Worms did not show the elimination of As for consecutive 28 d of exposure to clean soils. Biotransformation of As was characterized using HPLC-ICP-MS and XANES, showing the reduction of As in worms regardless of the As species to which worms were exposed. Metabolism of As in worms that formed As-thiol complex is thought to limit the excretion of As, and thus induce bioconcentration in worms. Uptake rates by one-compartment model indicated that pore water was the bioaccessible pool of As, and directly controlled the uptake of As by worms. The study suggests that higher uptake rate and bioaccumulation of As(III) than of As(V) are among the factors that make As(III) more toxic than As(V).  相似文献

The present study is intended to observe the chronologic changes of experimental sparganosis by histopathological observation and detection of circulating anti-sparganum IgG antibody using ELISA. Each of 25 mice was infected with five spargana, and they were examined after 1, 2, 4, 10 weeks or 6 months from infection. The followings are summarized results. 1. The plerocercoids were detected in the subcutaneous tissue of the trunk, neck or axilla, but a few often extended into the skeletal muscle. The recovery rates were 72% at the first week, 80% at the second week, 95% at the fourth week, 92% at the tenth week and 100% at the sixth month. The larvae grew slowly in both length and weight until 6 months. 2. Histopathologically, most of the larvae were observed alive in the soft tissue or skeletal muscle. Numerous eosinophils, neutrophils, lymphocytes and plasma cells were infiltrated focally around the worms by the second week, but they surrounded the worms to form a layer of inflammatory reaction after 4 weeks of infection. Also histiocytes and fibroblasts began to appear around the inflammatory cells at 4 weeks. After 10 weeks, the worms encircled by a thin fibrous layer were found. After 6 months, the worms were surrounded by either fibrous tissue or active inflammatory cells. The inflammation looked more severe in the tracks left by the worms, rather than around the worms. 3. The level of anti-sparganum IgG antibody in the serum showed an increase by the fourth week, and a rapid and continuous increase was observed thereafter by the tenth week after infection.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The stomachs and proximal duodena of 160 cougars (Puma concolor) and 17 bobcats (Lynx rufus), obtained throughout Oregon during 7 yr, were examined for Cylicospirura spp. and associated lesions. Prevalence in cougars was 73%, with a range in intensity of 1-562 worms. The mean diameter of nodules was 1.2 cm (SD=0.5), and many extended through the submucosa to the muscularis. About 83% of cougars had nodules; most nodules contained worms, but 14% of the smaller nodules (<0.2 cm) contained porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) quills. A mean of 12.4 worms/nodule (SD=34.1) was observed, with a maximum of 340 worms/nodule. Prevalence in bobcats was 53%, with an intensity of 1-25 worms. About 65% of bobcats had nodules, which were slightly smaller than those in cougars but appeared to involve similar layers of gastrointestinal tissue. One to 25 Cylicospirura sp. were found in all but two small nodules in bobcats. Cougars killed for livestock damage or safety concerns had a significantly higher median worm intensity than did those that died of other causes. Also, the median worm intensity of older cougars was higher than that of younger lions. There were more males than females killed for livestock damage or safety concerns. The cylicospirurid from cougars was Cylicospirura subaequalis, and that of bobcats was Cylicospirura felineus. These two similar species were separated morphologically by differences in tooth and sex organ morphology. They were also differentiated by DNA sequence analysis of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit 1 gene (cox1). Worm sequences from cougars differed from those from bobcats by 11%, whereas essentially no difference was found among worms from the same host. Phylogenetic analysis showed that within the order Spirurida, both cylicospirurids were most closely related to Spirocerca lupi, based on this gene sequence.  相似文献

The competitive interactions between susceptible and resistant Tubifex tubifex (Oligochaeta: Tubificidae) exposed to Myxobolus cerebralis (Myxozoa: Myxobolidae) infections were investigated in two laboratory trials. Competition was assessed by the total parasite production over the course of the trials in mixed and pure cultures of M. cerebralis exposed worms, and by the genetic analyses of worms from the control and experimental groups at the beginning and end of the experiments. Mixed cultures of resistant and susceptible worms showed a 70% reduction in production of parasites released when compared with pure cultures of susceptible worms. In studies with laboratory and field-collected oligochaetes the mixed cultures at the end of the cohabitation experiments were dominated by resistant Tubifex from lineage V (HB strain) this strain of Tubifex has a competitive advantage over worms from other lineages. The results of this study suggest that certain species of Tubifex may be dead-end hosts to M. cerebralis by absorbing or inactivating the parasite and may also show greater survival compared to susceptible oligochaetes in certain whirling disease enzootic habitats.  相似文献

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) of paragonimiasis iloktsuenensis rat sera was performed using crude antigens of Paragonimus iloktsuenensis (PIA), P. westermani (PWA) and Clonorchis sinensis (CSA). Three crude antigens (PIA, PWA, CSA) were prepared to saline homogenated supernatants of whole adult worms. Infected rat sera were obtained biweekly from the albino rats fed 50-80 metacercariae of P. iloktsuenensis through gastric catheter. Experimental groups were divided into 4 groups: GI (controls), GII, GIII and GIV according to 1-7 worms as GII, 10-19 worms as GIII and 22-40 worms as GIV, respectively. In ELISA, the mean OD values of each group for the homologous antigen (PIA) were increased significantly compared to the control sera at the 4th week of infection. With the progress of duration of infection, the mean OD values of infected sera of GII & GIV continuously increased up to the 12th week (last week), but in GIII the mean OD value increased until the 10th week. No significance was noted among the infection dose groups (GII, GIII and GIV), after the 6th week of infection. Also, the OD values of all infected rats did not show any proportional relationships to the number of worms recovered. In brief, the antibody productivity of individual rats were strongly different. The rat sera infected with P. iloktsuenensis cross-reacted with those infected with P. westermani or C. sinensis, as identified by OD values.  相似文献

Dirofilaria scapiceps was found between the synovial sheath and tendons, i.e., within the tendon sheath, in the ankle region of eastern cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus) and snowshoe hares (Lepus americanus). In cottontail rabbits, tendons and sheaths appeared normal and all worms were adults. Only one (4%) of 24 infected rabbits contained dead worms. All female worms were gravid in rabbits killed in late winter or early spring. Microfilaremias in rabbits were high (approximately 30-100 microfilariae/60 microliter blood) and of long duration (at least 8-28 mo), and rabbits were considered normal hosts of D. scapiceps. In some snowshoe hares, tendons and sheaths also appeared normal; however, in other hares a chronic proliferative tenosynovitis, characterized by fibrinous exudate, hyperplasia and hypertrophy of the intima and inflammatory cell (predominantly lymphocytes and plasma cells) infiltration of the intimal and fibrous layers of the synovial sheath led to encapsulation of worms. Dead subadult, dead adult, and live adult worms were found in the ankles of hares; 86 (46%) of 186 infected hares contained some or only dead worms. Fibrosis commonly occurred around dead worms. Dead subadults were also found in subcutaneous connective tissues over the trunk of the body. Degenerate embryos and amorphous material were observed in uteri of some female worms in hares killed in late winter or early spring. Few (1-5 microfilariae/60 microliter blood) or no microfilariae were observed in the peripheral blood of hares and microfilaremias were of short duration (less than 8 mo). Microfilariae in hares are probably trapped and destroyed in the chronic inflammatory lesions in the tendon sheaths since normal, degenerate, and calcified microfilariae were observed in the capsules around adult worms. Some microfilariae might also be destroyed in lymph nodes. Although D. scapiceps can be maintained within snowshoe hare populations, hares are considered abnormal hosts of D. scapiceps. Dirofilaria scapiceps may have spread from cottontail rabbits to snowshoe hares relatively recently.  相似文献

Site-finding of 14-day-old Echinostoma revolutum from the domestic chick was studied by inoculating single worms into various sites on the chorioallantoic membrane (CAM) of 13-day-old chick embryos. Regardless of the site of inoculation, single worms were attracted significantly to the area of the CAM above the embryo. More worms were found in this site at 24 than at 1 hr postinoculation. Worm-pairing was studied in chick embryos by inoculating 2 worms in separate windows, 2 cm apart. Worm-pairing, i.e., worms in contact or within 5 mm of each other, was very evident at 24 hr. The percentage of paired worms on the CAM above the embryo was considerably less than single worms.  相似文献

The present work provides the first evidence of polychaete worms as passive vectors of white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) in the transmission of white spot disease to Penaeus monodon broodstocks. The study was based on live polychaete worms, Marphysa spp., obtained from worm suppliers/worm fishers as well as samples collected from 8 stations on the northern coast of Tamilnadu (India). Tiger shrimp Penaeus monodon broodstock with undeveloped ovaries were experimentally infected with WSSV by feeding with polychaete worms exposed to WSSV. Fifty percent of polychaete worms obtained from worm suppliers were found to be WSSV positive by 2-step PCR, indicating high prevalence of WSSV in the live polychaetes used as broodstock feed by hatcheries in this area. Of 8 stations surveyed, 5 had WSSV positive worms with prevalence ranging from 16.7 to 75%. Polychaetes collected from areas near shrimp farms showed a higher level of contamination. Laboratory challenge experiments confirmed the field observations, and > 60% of worms exposed to WSSV inoculum were proved to be WSSV positive after a 7 d exposure. It was also confirmed that P. monodon broodstock could be infected with WSSV by feeding on WSSV contaminated polychaete worms. Though the present study indicates only a low level infectivity in wild polychaetes, laboratory experiments clearly indicated the possibility of WSSV transfer from the live feed to shrimp broodstock, suggesting that polychaete worms could play a role in the epizootiology of WSSV.  相似文献

Significant amounts of radioactivity were associated with Hymenolepis diminuta following incubation in 3H-trypsin. Autoradiography of worms incubated in 3H-trypsin for 30 min demonstrated that all radioactivity was associated with the worm's surface (tegument). The amount of 3H-trypsin adsorbed by the worms was not sufficient to account for the inactivation of this enzyme in the presence of intact worms. Unlabeled trypsin and poly-L-glutamate (but not poly-L-lysine) inhibited adsorption of 3H-trypsin, but were without effect on trypsin inactivation by H. diminuta. Therefore, trypsin was adsorbed by intact H. diminuta, but the process of adsorption apparently did not play any role in inactivation of the enzyme.  相似文献

The blood flukes of mammals (Digenea: Schistosomatidae) are among trematodes unique whose adult worms have separated sexes which are dissimilar in appearance. The developmental features, growth and organogenesis of Schistosoma mansoni were studied in Swiss Webster mice by a digital system for image analysis and confocal microscopy. Data so far obtained showed two phases with significative morphological changes at 3-4 weeks post-infection, and a gradual similar development onwards in the reproductive system and tegument. Our male-dependent phase demonstrated that mating occurs before sexual maturing. At week three, the majority of male worms (59%) had formed the gynaecophoric canal although testicular lobes and tegumental tubercles were absent. By this time, 33% females had an incipient ovary (without cellular differentiation). At week four, 77.2% males presented testicular lobes with few germinative cells while 26% had developing tegumental tubercles. The immature ovary was observed in 69% females. Suckers followed different pattern of growth between male and females. The size of oral and ventral suckers from six-week-old male worms grew abruptly (3.0 fold) more than that of three-week-old. In female worms, maximum growth was attained at week four, reducing in size thereafter. From sixth week onwards, all specimens showed the fully developed reproductive system. Probably, these features are morphological traits which schistosome has experienced from hermaphrodite to dioecy.  相似文献

Of 8, day-old mallard ducklings, each fed 50 encysted metacercariae of Echinostoma trivolvis, 4 (50%) were infected 15-31 days postinfection (PI) with a total of 10 (2.5%) worms. The worms were attached loosely to the mucosa of the lower ileum and rectum-cloaca, and some were ovigerous by day 15 PI. Ducklings, 4-14 days old when fed encysted metacercariae, became infected with E. trivolvis adults, but ducks 150 days old were refractory to infection. Compared to our previous studies on experimental infections of echinostomes, mallard ducklings were less susceptible than golden hamsters to E. trivolvis.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown that a gonad-inhibiting hormone (GIH) secreted by the cerebral ganglia controls reproduction in nemertean worms. In order to determine whether the cerebral hormone also controls regenerative growth, as it does in other marine worms such as Nereis diversicolor (Polychaeta), we compared gonadogenesis with enterogenesis in regenerating Lineus lacteus under the influence of, and withdrawn from the influence of, GIH. Experimental evidence is presented for a high specificity and a striking efficiency of GIH on sexual development. Over 3 months, regenerating decerebrate worms differentiated mature gonads whereas regenerating worms with cerebral ganglia remained sexually undifferentiated. On the other hand, regenerative enterogenesis occurred equally well in worms with or without a brain. We also tried to delineate the influence of temperature and light on neuroendocrine activity of regenerating L. lacteus. In L. lacteus we compared sexual development in regenerating worms and normal worms co-exposed over one year, (i) either to light or dark, and (ii) either to a winter temperature (12 °C) or a summer temperature (20 °C). When continually exposed to a winter temperature, both normal and regenerating worms differentiated mature gonads from 8th to 12th month regardless of the light-dark alternative. On the other hand, worms exposed to a summer temperature reached sexual maturity at the end of year only when they were also continually exposed to dark. Summer temperature plus light permanently inhibited the sexual development, i.e. resulted in continuous release of GIH.  相似文献

Twenty-nine (64%) of 44 ICR mice fed a single metacercarial cyst of Echinostoma caproni and all of 23 mice each fed five cysts were infected with ovigerous worms at necropsy 2-4 weeks post-infection. Each host fed five cysts had two to five worms at necropsy, and all worms were either paired or clustered. Distribution of worms in the small intestine was similar in single- and five-worm infections and all worms were located 17-20 cm anterior to the ileo-cecal valve. Both single and multiple worms produced eggs with fully-developed miracidia. The number of eggs per uterus in 2-week-old multiple worms was almost twice that of single worms. The body area of 3- and 4-week-old multiple worms was significantly greater than that of single worms of the same age.  相似文献

Eleven trials, involving 440 rats bred from 3 laboratory strains and worms from 4 isolates of Moniliformis moniliformis, were carried out with each rat receiving an oral dose of 15 cystacanths. The results showed that the infectivity of the cystacanths was not affected by their age (range 55-194 days) or by their density per cockroach during development (16.1-88.6 cystacanths per cockroach). The numbers of worms per rat recovered at 35 days postinfection (p.i.) were shown to be related to rat strain, with highly inbred strains (PVG and F344) being more supportive of numbers of worms than an outbred Wistar strain. There was no evidence to suggest that the sex of the rats had any influence on the numbers of worms recovered at 35 days p.i. Evidence was obtained to suggest that smaller (younger) rats are likely to support more worms on average than larger (older) rats. There was no evidence of any relationship between worm weight and numbers of worms present per rat on day 35 p.i. Generally, rat strain had little effect on the dry weight (growth) of male M. moniliformis, in contrast to observations made for female worms. The greatest range of worm weights was observed from the recent isolate of the worm (1982) as compared with the well established isolate (1956) and the rats that supported most worms differed from those that harbored the largest worms. Rat sex was not observed to be associated with worm weight. The frequency distributions of numbers of M. moniliformis per rat were not described readily by the negative binomial distribution.  相似文献

Jirds were given a chemoprophylactic inoculation of flubendazole (FMBZ) and then five injections of infective larvae of Brugia pahangi whilst still protected by the FMBZ. When the drug was thought to be non-effective the jirds (and controls) were given a challenge infection of B. pahangi larvae. By comparison with control jirds the treated-infected-challenged jirds had 40% fewer adult worms. The control treated-challenged jirds contained mostly sterile female worms showing that they were still partially protected by FMBZ but worms numbers were not significantly reduced as compared with untreated controls.  相似文献

The distribution among size and reproductive classes of the digenean Lankatrematoides gardneri was recorded from the pancreatic ducts of 41 dugongs from the Gulf of Papua, Papua New Guinea. Infrapopulation sizes ranged from 5 to 921 worms and showed no correlation with host age, sex, or month of capture. Immature worms tended to be concentrated in intermediate size classes, the largest immatures being no more numerous than matures. The mean proportion of mature worms in the 29 infrapopulations containing them was small (9.8%). Mature worms were significantly greater in mass than the largest immatures. There is evidence of an interaction between the presence or absence of mature worms and the distribution of immatures among classes.  相似文献

In two experiments, conducted at 6° and 16 °C, 43Nereis virens were exposed to14C-labelled γ-HCH (lindane) at a concentration of 1 μg/l, which was maintained by intermittent monitoring and redosing. A closed system with individuals living in glass tubes was used. At equilibrium and during the subsequent phase of elimination, both γ-HCH and metabolites were determined in individual worms as well as in the water and faeces throughout the entire experiment. The bioconcentration factors of γ-HCH were 480 and 440 at 6° and 16 °C, respectively; those based on total radioactivity were 500 and 410. These factors were in the upper range of those known for other aquatic animals. The elimination may be described by an exponential function. The initial 50% decrease of γ-HCH and γ-HCH+metabolites in the worms occurred at both temperatures in 2 and 3 days, respectively. The percentage of γ-HCH metabolites in worms increased considerably during the elimination period. At least four metabolites were detected in worms and water. If pollutants are evaluated by accumulation and elimination kinetics, metabolization has to be taken into account.  相似文献

Abstract. The polychaete Dipolydora commensalis is an obligate symbiont of hermit crabs and produces a burrow along the columella of the gastropod shells they inhabit. Adults of D. commensalis have short palps that they use to feed on particles dropped or brought in by the respiratory currents of hosts. To determine whether hermit crabs influence palp length, specimens of D. commensalis were isolated in glass capillary tubes and the growth of palps was measured over a 3‐week period. Palp length was also measured in worms isolated in gastropod shells with or without hermit crabs for 2 weeks. In addition, to determine whether adults of D. commensalis have regeneration capabilities like those of free‐living relatives, worms were cut at the fifth or 15th setiger and then monitored for 35 d. Worms extracted from shells and placed into capillary tubes had initial palp lengths of 1.0±0.4 mm (n=17); after isolation, palps were 40% longer (1.4±0.4 mm, n=17). Worms in gastropod shells with hermit crabs had an average palp length of 0.9±0.4 mm (n=31), whereas worms in shells without hermit crabs had palps that were 33% longer (1.2±0.5 mm, n=40). Adults of D. commensalis are capable of regeneration; 35 d after ablation at setigers 5 or 15, the average number of anterior setigers regenerated was 5 (n=15) and 9±1.3 (n=13), respectively. The average number of posterior setigers regenerated from the 15 setiger anterior fragments was 11±6 (n=10). The findings suggest that the palps (and sometimes anterior ends) of the worms are exposed during feeding and are cut during movement of the hermit crab. In the laboratory worms can live for >4 years, considerably longer than the functional life span of most gastropod shells inhabited by hermit crabs.  相似文献
