Summary Four types of striated muscle fibers with distinctive ultrastructure were defined in the Atlantic hagfish (Myxine glutinosa, L.): white, intermediate, and red fibers of m. parietalis, and red fibers of m. craniovelaris.White fibers are thick, contain very few mitochondria and fat vacuoles, and possess distinct and separate myofibrils with thin Z-disks and distinct M-lines. Intermediate fibers are thinner, possess largely similar myofibrils that often are even better separated due to a higher content of fat vacuoles and especially mitochondria and glycogen granules. Red fibers of m. parietalis contain large amounts of mitochondria, fat vacuoles, and glycogen granules. Their myofibrils possess M-lines, and although branching more, the myofibrils of red fibers conform with a Fibrillenstruktur pattern like those of white and intermediate fibers. Red fibers of m. craniovelaris are very thin, possess many smaller fat vacuoles, and large amounts of mitochondria and glycogen granules. The myofibrils are significantly thinner than in m. parietalis fibers, run as quite independent well separated units, possess thicker Z-disks, and lack M-lines. Biology cannot accommodate all aspects of culture. Aspects of culture that a biological approach can take into account can be covered by the biological categories of phenotype and environment. There is no need to treat culture as a separate category. Attempts to elaborate biological explanations of cultural variation will meet with success only if biologists expand theories of development, and integrate them in evolutionary biology. The alternative — elaborating the idea of so-called cultural inheritance — makes little sense from a biological point of view.  相似文献

This report examines the extent to which dream recall involves the 3 R's (reading, writing, and arithmetic). Two separate studies were done. In the first study, two scorers rated, on a blind basis, a total of 456 written dream reports, available from five previous studies. There was perfect agreement between the two scorers. They agreed that there were no instances of reading, no instances of writing, and one instance of probable calculating in the 456 dreams. The second study was a questionnaire survey. Complete responses were obtained from 240 frequent dreamers (who reported remembering a mean of seven dreams per week). The study examined in two ways the frequency of the 3 R's in their recalled dreams. First, in answer to direct questions as to how frequently they dreamt about each activity, roughly 90% of the respondents reported that they never or hardly ever dreamt about each of four activities: reading, writing, typing, and calculating. In answers to other questions, this group reported spending a mean of six hours per day engaged in these activities. Second, responses as to the relative prominence of six activities (walking, writing, talking with friends, reading, sexual activity, typing) in dreaming versus waking produced two clear groupings of activities. Walking, talking with friends, and sexual activity were each rated almost as prominent in dreaming as in waking whereas the second group consisting of writing, reading, and typing were rated as far more prominent in waking than in dreaming. The two activity groups differed at p < .0001. Thus, the 3 R's appear to occur very infrequently in dreams. These findings are placed in a theoretical frame which suggests that dreaming (compared to waking) deals very little with serial activities characterized by input—rapid-processing—output in which the neural nets function in a feed-forward mode. Rather, dreaming may be characterized by relatively broad or loose connection making in which the nets function more in an autoassociative mode.  相似文献

Summary Phytophthora infestans has three kinds of somatic nuclei: an oval shaped nucleus (approx. 3.1×2.7 ) which stains diffusely except for a crescent shaped Feulgen positive cap which stains intensely; a granular nucleus whose contents are organized into a fairly constant number of stained bodies, and, a deeply staining condensed nucleus. The capped nucleus is thought to be metabolic or resting and the granular nucleus is thought to be dividing as it is most commonly found in hyphal tips. Attenuated forms of all three kinds of nuclei are found.Nuclear division is mitotic and intranuclear. Eight—ten chromosomes are seen at metaphase.Sporangia have a mean of 6.3 nuclei which is constant for age and strain of culture. Sporangia become multinucleate as a result of nuclear migration and not by division in the developing sporangium. Zoospores are usually uninucleate.The nuclear cap is persistent throughout nuclear division when it also divides. Summary The histochemical activities of succinic dehydrogenase (SDH), myofibrillar Adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) and alpha glycerophosphate dehydrogenase were studied in serial sections of rat vastus lateralis (red) (RVL), gastrocnemius and diaphragm muscles. Three main fibre-types were distinguished. The Type I fibres of RVL and gastrocnemius muscles fell into two distinct groups: one category-Type IA showed very low ATPase activity. The second category of Type IB fibres displayed moderate ATPase reaction. The Type IA fibres were divisible into two sub-groups when tested for SDH reaction. Type IA1 fibres possessed a homogenous distribution of diformazan·granules throughout the fibre: Type IA2 fibres displayed characteristic moth-eaten pattern of diformazan localization. The diaphragm muscle did not show either Type IB or Type IA2 varieties. The great majority of Type I fibres were sub-type IA1 in the three fast muscles studied. It is also demonstrated here that an inherent heterogeneity exists between Type I fibres of diaphragm and leg muscles in regard to -GPD localization. This histochemical data emphasizes the fact that subdivision of Type I striated muscle fibres of mammalian animals into two sub-types is only approximate and that a further subcategorization is possible.  相似文献

Growth and oxygen uptake of potato callus is faster in an oxygen-enriched atmosphere (70% oxygen, v/v; oxygen-callus) than in air (20% oxygen, v/v; air-callus). Especially the non-mitochondrial, so-called residual respiration is increased in oxygen-callus. The capacities of the mitochondrial respiratory pathways (cytochrome pathway, Vcyt and alternative pathway, Valt) are also higher in this callus. In both callus types only a small part of the alternative pathway capacity is used in uninhibited respiration. The lower oxygen uptake of air-callus at normal air oxygen pressures is partially due to diffusional impedance. Measurement of the respiratory parameters of air-callus in oxygen-saturated medium leads to higher values than measurement in air-saturated medium, although these values are still lower than those of oxygen-callus.ATP-production was calculated from the oxygen-uptake data and compared with the dry weight production of the callus to give values of 10.0 and 10.8 g dry weight produced.-mol ATP-1, for air-callus and oxygen-callus respectively. The properties of the -2-l-fucosyltransferases in submaxillary gland preparations from blood group ABH secrefors and non-secretors were compared. The level of activity in the non-secretor gland homogenates amounted to about 5% only of that found in the secretor gland preparations. The enzymes from the two sources differed in solubility properties, charge and affinities for donor and acceptor substrates. The enzyme from secretor glands showed a preference for acceptors with Type 1 [d-galactosyl(1–3)-N-acetyl-d-glucosamine] structures whereas the enzyme from non-secretor glands had a preference for Type 2 [d-galactosyl(1–4)-N-acetyl-d-glucosamine] structures.These results demonstrate that expression of the secretor gene (Se) is associated with a molecular form of the -2-l-fucosyltransferase that is different from the species present in the same tissue when theSe gene is not expressed.  相似文献

Summary The development of the compound eyes and nervous system of the penaeid shrimp,Penaeus duorarum, from the first nauplius to the first postlarva, has been studied. The first anlage of the compound eyes is a pair of optic discs on the front of the animal. These increase in size through cell-division until the second protozoea stage, where the eye-stalks appear with ommatidia and optic neuropiles developed. The original neuroectoderm of the optic discs is retained in the shape of a proliferation zone throughout the life of the animal. From the optic discs, develop the ommatidia, the lamina ganglionaris, and the medulla externa. The medullae interna and terminalis develop from cells coming from the brain anlage. From the second protozoea and onwards, the development is less rapid. The final shape of the adult eye is reached during the postlarval stages and includes the appearance of a few more pigments and a perfecting of several features. A scheme for the development of crustacean compound eyes is laid down. Further, the medulla externa of the Malacostraca and the single medulla of non-malacostracan crustaceans are homologized.The continuous growth of the nervous system is traced in the development of the neuropile. The appearance of glomeruli structures is reported, as are also, to some extent, neurosecretory organs. The development of the SPX-organ conforms to that of other decapods.For the sake of simplicity, the findings reported below in Results are grouped under two headings, namely the eye-stalk and the nervous system. Under the eye-stalk will be described both the structures coming from the optic discs comprising the ommatidia, the lamina ganglionaris, and the medulla externa, and the contributions from the nervous system comprising the medulla terminalis and medulla interna. Under the nervous system will be described the rest of the nervous system. The term anlage of the compound eyes is the same as the optic discs and denotes all contributions from this area in the early larva.  相似文献

Summary In this report we describe the time of appearance and ultrastructural features of enteroendocrine cells (EECs) in the human fetal small intestine (SB) between 9 and 22 weeks gestation. Thirteen distinctive EECs were identified in fetal SB. Two of these, not found in normal adult SB, appeared within the stratified epithelium of the proximal SB at 9–10 weeks. They were arbitrarily termed primitive and precursor cells. As in all fetal EECs, the pale cytoplasm of the primitive cell contains a distinctive population of secretory granules (SGs). Primitive cell SGs average 200–330 nm; some have dense cores with lucent halos while others are filled with a homogeneous dense or flocculent material. The SGs of the precursor cells are larger, averaging up to 1 m in diameter and their contents vary in electron density. A third group of cells not described in normal adult SB was arbitrarily termed transitional cells. These have two populations of SGs; one resembles the SGs of the precursor cells, and the other resembles the SGs of some of the specific adult type EECs. Transitional EC, S, I and G cells are seen. In addition, mature appearing EC, S, G, I, L, D, and D1 cells were identified by 12 weeks of gestation. Summary The aim of this study was to determine whether DNA variations could be detected in regenerated pea plants. Two different genotypes were analyzed by cytogenetic and molecular techniques: the Dolce Provenza cultivar and the 5075 experimental line. Dolce Provenza regenerated plants showed a reduction in DNA content, particularly at the level of unique sequences and ribosomal genes. Moreover, regeneration was associated with an increase in DNA methylation of both internal and external cytosines of the CCG sequence. On the other hand, the DNA content of the 5075 line remained stable after regeneration. DNA reduction was found only in 5075 plants regenerated from callus cultures maintained for long incubation periods (about a year). The DNA variations observed are discussed both in relation to the genotype source and the role of tissue-culture stress.  相似文献

In the present report, we used serological, cellular, and restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) to investigate the DR1 haplotype in the Israeli population. We describe an Israeli homozygous typing cell (HTC), HLA-DwLVA, which defines a new lymphocyte-activating determinant associated with Bw65, DR1 and distinct from Dwl. The parents of this donor, non-Ashkenazi Algerian Jews, are first cousins and share HLA-Cw8, Bw65, BfS, DR1, DQw1, DPw4. No specificity could be assigned to HLA-DwLVA using the 91 Ninth Workshop HTCs. Two families and forty unrelated DR1 individuals were studied with DwLVA and a panel of DR1/Dw1 HTCs. HLA-DwLVA showed segregation as a single determinant within families. This new specificity was present in 24 out of 40 (60%) unrelated DR1 individuals, indicating that in the Israeli population DwLVA is the main lymphocyte-defined determinant associated with the serologically defined DRI specificity, in contrast to non-Jewish Caucasoids where DR1 is significantly associated with Dw1. The vast majority of DwLVA-positive carriers were also Bw65 carriers, indicating that Bw65, DR1, DwLVA may represent a typical allele combination in the Israeli population. The RFLP analysis established the correlation of certain RFLPs with Dw1 and DwLVA. In addition, we describe a cluster of RFLPs that may correspond to a new Dw subtype associated with DR1, for which no serological and cellular reagents have been described so far.  相似文献

Dream interpretative efforts appear unconstrained by methodological standards. An examination of the re-interpretations of Freud's dream of Irma's Injection, the dream specimen of psychoanalysis, illustrates the undisciplined nature of dream interpretation. Reading in from presumed day residues or infantile experiences rather than out from the dream report per se lies at the heart of the problem. The failure to spell out inferences, to link inferences to the dream text, to explain and maintain the relationships in the dream report, and to offer a substitute text for the entire dream text all contribute to the inadequacies of dream interpreatation.  相似文献

Summary This study attempts to elucidate the mechanism through which lysosomal accumulation occurs with age in the epithelial cells of the thyroid gland and especially in the active follicles of the aging mouse thyroid. Thyroid morphology and function in old CBA (at least 24 months of age) male mice were compared with those in young (2 months of age) animals. The effects of different intake of iodine were tested and compared in both cohorts, each of which was divided into three groups: (i) low iodine group, (ii) moderate iodine group, and (iii) high iodine group. As expected, the present work confirmed the well-known accumulation with age of cold follicles coexisting with active follicles in the old mouse thyroid. Attention has been focused on the active follicles whose follicular cells contained in their cytoplasm a large number of pleomorphic dense bodies. The lysosomal nature of these bodies, referred to as secondary lysosomes, was confirmed by histochemistry; however, they displayed variability in acid phosphatase staining. In old animals, regardless of the type of iodine regimen, the ratio between relative follicular volume and relative colloid volume as determined by morphometry remained unchanged. Ultrastructurally, the relative volume occupied by secondary lysosomes in active follicles was always higher than in the young groups. Autoradiographic studies with 125I revealed that a large part of the radioactivity was located in secondary lysosomes of thyroid cells in active follicels of old mice when radioiodine was injected 3 weeks before death. Two different types of vacuoles were present in a non-negligible number of thyrocytes of the active follicles in aged cohorts. The first type was made up of grossly dilated rough endoplasmic cisternae, the second corresponded to intracytoplasmic microfollicular vacuoles. Both aspects have been described in conditions of chronic stimulation. It is concluded (1) that different intake of iodine for 6 weeks does not modulate the thyroid morphology in old mice; (2) that in the thyrocytes of the active follicles in old mice accumulation of secondary lysosomes occurs due to a slowdown of turnover; and (3) that the follicular cells of active follicles feature morphological aspects suggesting a hyperactive state compensating the lack of hormone production in the cold follicles.  相似文献

Feulgen and silver-stained karyotypes and meiosis of two triploid viviparous onion forms (Allium cepa var.viviparum), the Croatian Ljutika and the Indian Pran, were comparatively analyzed. The results of chromosome measurements show that Ljutika and Pran are karyologically not identical, although significant similarities were found in the morphology of their chromosomes. Five geographically distant clones of Ljutika showed good agreement in the number and gross morphology of the chromosomes and in the number and position of NORs and interphase nucleoli. Heterotrivalents were predominant in meiosis of Ljutika but a relatively high frequency of higher multivalents together with univalents and bivalents were also observed. The relationship between Ljutika and Pran and their possible origin are discussed.  相似文献

All models of self-motion from optical flow assume the instantaneous velocity field as input. We tested this assumption for human observers using random-dot displays that simulated translational and circular paths of movement by manipulating the lifetime and displacement of individual dots. For translational movement, observers were equally accurate in judging direction of heading from a velocity field with a two-frame dot life and a direction field in which the magnitudes of displacement were randomized while the radial pattern of directions was preserved, but at chance with a speed field in which the directions were randomized, preserving only magnitude. Accuracy declined with increasing noise in vector directions, but remained below 2.6° with a 90° noise envelope. Thus, the visual system uses the radial morphology of vector directions to determine translational heading and can tolerate large amounts of noise in this pattern. For circular movement, observers were equally accurate with a 2-frame velocity field, 3-frame acceleration displays, and 2-frame and 3-frame direction fields, consistent with the use of the pattern of vector directions to locate the center of rotation. The results indicate that successive independent velocity fields are sufficient for perception of translational and circular heading.  相似文献

Summary Up to now Antirrhinum was classified as a typical example for a uniparentalmaternal inheritance of the plastids. However, the findings reported here prove that also the male gametophyte of Antirrhinum may occasionally transmit plastids into the egg. This conclusion is based on genetic experiments involving a form of the plastom mutant prasinizans which is described as gelbgrüne prasinizans. In contrast to all other plastid mutations known in Antirrhinum majus this mutant originated in Sippe 50 is completely viable. In plants containing plastids of this mutant type only, the mutant character is manifested during early growth stages. Cotyledons and first foliage leaves which are initially white or white yellow, slowly turn green and become indistinguishable from normal Sippe 50. Reciprocal crosses of green Sippe 50 with gelbgrüne prasinizans gave few variegated descendants; the others were exclusively plants identical with the maternal parent as far as leaf colour is concerned (Table). The variegated individuals cannot be gene mutants since selfing and crossing experiments showed non-mendelian inheritance. Furthermore it could be ruled out that in the cross Sippe 50 x gelbgrüne prasinizans the three variegated descendants represent spontaneous new plastom mutants because the pale tissue in these plants turned green in the same way as the paternal parent. Because of the typical greening of this mutant and since plastid mutations could be ruled out we have to conclude that plastids were transmitted by the pollen parent into the egg. There these plastids multiplied together with the maternal plastids giving rise to the chimeras after sorting-out of the two plastid types. This interpretation is supported by the observation of mixed cells in tissues where the leaf variegation is finely mosaiced. The results were possible only because the plastids of the pollen parent can be unequivocally recognised.  相似文献

Paddy levees form networks of narrow linear habitats and play various roles in cultural landscapes. Traditional landscapes on the west side of Lake Biwa consist of paddy field terraces and both stone and soil levees that have been maintained by paddy field management using local resources. Paddy levees in this study site are principally classified into five different types. Our study points out how differences in paddy levee structure as well as in management practices influence the plant species. Seventeen paddy levee transects were split into four habitat types based on their species components by TWINSPAN. Spatial characteristics and physical structures of paddy levees depended on natural conditions and human activities. The species–area curves of each levee type showed a clear distinction: the soil, stone and abandoned curves were steep, while the concrete and consolidated ones were gentle. The vegetation on consolidated levees was utterly different from the vegetation on traditional levee types from the aspect of species richness and species components. Soil type levees contained various woody plant species and included more diverse and indigenous plant species than abandoned type levees.  相似文献

This study documents that ethnomedical beliefs and practices play an important role in primary care in a southern community. Thirty-three of 73 patients from a rural Appalachian area coming to a university primary care internal medicine practice presented 54 ethnomedical complaints such as high blood (24.1%), Weak 'n dizzy (22.2%), nerves (16.7%), sugar (5.6%) and fallin' out (3.7%). Thirty-three patients had both biomedical and ethnomedical complaints, 40 patients had biomedical complaints without ethnomedical complaints and no patients presented with ethnomedical complaints alone. Over two-thirds of all patients consulted non-medical personnel for their complaints, mostly family and friends, and 70 percent self-treated prior to clinic consultation. Patients presenting with ethnomedical complaints when compared with those presenting with biomedical complaints sought advice of non-physicians significantly more often (p < 0.02); no statistical difference, however, was found in their self-treatment practices. Ninety-two of 130 biomedical complaints were recorded by the patient's physician but none of the 54 ethnomedical complaints were formally recorded (p < 0.001). The high incidence of ethnomedical complaints in this population and the failure of physicians to recognize these complaints demand that primary care medicine residents be taught improved history-taking skills and the essentials of ethnomedical illnesses if they are to provide culturally-sensitive patient care. Zusammenfassung Kegel und Säulen der Schwanen-Eischale hinterlassen am Querschliff nach Entkalkung mit EDTA organisches (mucoproteides) Material als ein zusammenhängendes Gerüst, das sich mit Thionin metachromatisch färbt; ohne Demineralisierung oder wenigstens Anätzung bleibt Thionin an Schliffen und Bruchkanten der Schale wirkungslos. Das Lichtmikroskop zeigt an Schliffen nichts von dem organischen Material, es wurde während des Kristallwachstums fein zerteilt in Gitterlücken des Schalencalcits eingeschlossen. Es findet sich am stärksten angehäuft an den äueren und inneren Oberflächen der Kristall-individuen. In den Kegeln ist das Gerüst radial ausgebildet als die Loculi der Keile, und konzentrisch geschichtet, entsprechend den Lagen der Globularinklusionen, um deren jede herum Verdichtung der organischen Substanz statthat. In den inneren Säulen folgt das organische Gerüst dem Rhombenmuster; die äueren Säulen sind arm an organischer Substanz, hier verbleibt nach der Entkalkung eine dünne laterale Oberflächenschicht.
Summary The cones and columns of the swans egg shell leave behind after decalcification with EDTA an organic (mucoproteid) material in form of a continuous frame work stainable metachromatically with thionine. Without demineralisation or at least etching, thionine proves ineffectual in ground sections or breaking edges of the shell. In ground sections the light microscope demonstrates nothing of the organic material: it was inclosed during the crystal growth in submicroscopical lattice gaps of the calcite individuals. The organic material is chiefly accumulated in the outer and inner surfaces of the crystals. In the cones the organic frame work is developed radially as the loculi of the wedges and concentrically layered corresponding with the globular inclusions, concentrated in the circumference of each. In the inner columns the organic material follows to the rhomb pattern. The outer columns after decalcification only leave behind a thin lateral organic sheath.

Summary Segregation analysis was performed on 211 nuclear families belonging to 166 pedigrees of hereditary retinoblastoma found in a number of series which have been gathered from the literature. Bilaterally affected carriers appear homogeneous. The segregation ratio in their offspring is 0.49, and the proportion of bilateral cases among affected offspring is 0.87. Both unilaterally affected and unaffected carriers appear heterogeneous. The very low segregation ratio (0.08) in the offspring of unilateral carriers who are not detected through an affected child, suggests the possiblity of two types of carriers, high and low transmitters. The proportions of low transmitters was estimated as 0.14 among all familial unilateral carriers and as 0.45 among all detected unaffected carriers. Unilateral and unaffected high transmitters give a significantly lower segregation ratio than bilaterally affected carriers.On the one hand, the existence of these two different types of carriers provides arguments in support of the hypothesis of delayed mutation. On the other hand, the differences in penetrance among high transmitters, according to their phenotype, supports the hypothesis of host resistance. Under the two-mutation hypothesis, the possibility that the mutation rate is variable among individuals and partly genetically determined, is suggested.  相似文献
