The eggplant lace bug, Gargaphia solani, was used to investigate the proximate factors regulating maternal care and a noncaring, condition dependent strategy called egg dumping. We hypothesize that the act of delaying oviposition while searching for a dumping opportunity suppresses oogenesis and triggers guarding behavior. We examined several predictions of this hypothesis by measuring: (1) whether females do delay oviposition in the absence of dumping stimuli, (2) whether females in transition between egg dumping and egg guarding are capable of expressing either reproductive option, (3) the effect of nymphal interactions and antennal ablation on the duration of maternal care, and (4) oogenesis in guarding and dumping females. We found that females without a dumping opportunity wait, on average, 30 h longer to oviposit than females exposed to a dump mass. Females that had initiated their own egg mass could resume eggdumping if they had laid less than half of their eggs but were unlikely to abandon their eggs when most had been laid. Maternal care in G. solani can be prolonged if interactions with nymphs are artificially prolonged. Females require antennae to maintain maternalcare. Presumably antennae transduce cues from eggs and nymphs. Dissections of dumping and guarding females 72 h after their first oviposition demonstrated that dumpers continue to produce primary oocytes after a dumping event but guarders terminate oogenesis whilecaring for their first brood. We interpret all of these results within the context of the hypothesis that juvenile hormone titers regulate the expression of both egg dumping and egg guarding.  相似文献

Egg dumping, or abandonment of eggs and young to the care of other conspecifics, frees individuals from costs of maternal care while potentially imposing energetic and ecological costs on egg recipients. It is not clear, however, that egg dumping necessarily represents selfish manipulation of egg recipients, and in some ecological contexts, recipients may benefit from enlarged broods. Thus, egg dumping may either be mutually beneficial for dumpers and recipients or entail costs for dumpers that are compensated by other means, such as improving reproduction of genetically related egg recipients. Here I use field experiments to test the relative importance of manipulation (i.e., "parasitism"), mutualism, and kin selection in the evolution of egg dumping in the tingid lace bug Gargaphia solani. In support of mutualism and kin selection, I found that reproduction of egg recipient G. solani benefits from brood enlargement, most likely because eggs and gregarious nymphs find safety in greater numbers. But contrary to both parasitism and mutualism, egg dumper reproduction was not improved by offspring abandonment. Indeed, dumpers laid smaller clutches than recipients, and dumpers did not convert a survival advantage into greater future reproduction. Genetic analyses of a natural G. solani population revealed, however, that dumpers are related to their egg recipients. Moreover, Hamilton's rule showed that egg-dumping G. solani earn sufficient indirect genetic benefits for kin selection to favor the behavior. Thus, egg dumping in some species may be kin-selected cooperation rather than parasitism or mutualism.  相似文献

Abstract. The involvement of the endocrine system in courtship, mating, maternal behaviour and the gonadotrophic cycle was studied in the earwig, Euborellia annulipes, after application of JH III and, alternatively, precocene II. Topical application of 35 or 122 μg of JH III to newly eclosed females advanced the onset of courtship behaviour from 6.6 ± 1.3 days in acetone-treated controls to 1.4 ± 2.8 and 0.5 ± 2.5 days, respectively. Application of 6 μg of JH III had no effect on the onset of courtship behaviour. Applications of Juvenile Hormone had no significant effect on the age at first mating nor on the duration of mating, though the trend is towards advanced onset. The age at first oviposition was advanced by hormone treatment; clutch size and the proportion of offspring hatching was reduced by hormone treatment. The interclutch interval, size and proportion hatching of the second clutch were not affected by hormone treatment. Topical application of 50 μg of JH III to females on the day of oviposition shortened the total duration of maternal care from 15.4 ± 0.5 to 5.3 ± 1.7 days; whereas in acetone-treated and precocene II-treated groups maternal care lasted 16.1 ± 1.9 and 13.8 ± 1.6 days, respectively. The duration of maternal care was positively correlated with number of offspring hatching and fledging. In a corollary experiment, topical application of JH III significantly enhanced the onset of the second gonadotrophic cycle as assessed by basal follicle length; application of 20 μg of precocene II, either singly or in repeated doses, did not delay growth of basal follicles. Finally, repeated application of as much as 80 μg of precocene II had no effect on basal follicle length, nor on ovary wet weights. These results are consistent with the hypothesis that intermediate to high titres of JH are associated with oocyte growth, mating, and the cessation of maternal care; low titres of JH appear to be associated with the period of maternal behaviour and slow ovarian follicle development.  相似文献

Abstract. The anti-Juvenile Hormone agent precocene II was used to investigate the relationship of corpora allata activity to subsocial behaviour in a burrower bug Sehirus cinctus Palisot (Heteroptera: Cydnidae). Egg-brooding females treated with a range of dosages of precocene II exhibited reliably depressed maternal defensive behaviour when treated with at least 70 μg of precocene II, but attraction to eggs was only depressed at higher dosages. This effect was not due to precocene II toxicity, as demonstrated by the prevention of depression effects through simultaneous treatments of precocene II and the Juvenile Hormone analogue methoprene. Methoprene, however, failed to reinstate maternal responsiveness in maternally depressed females that had been previously treated with precocene II. This study provides the first clear evidence that insect parental behaviour can be modified by treatment with anti-Juvenile Hormone agents, and suggests that the role of the corpora allata in governing care in S. cinctus is different from that of other maternal insects, such as earwigs.  相似文献

The characteristics of vitellogenin (Vg) and the relationship between Vg production and egg production in the tobacco budworm, Heliothis virescens, were studied. The relationship between Vg production and juvenile hormone (JH) and the impact of mating on Vg and egg production were also investigated. Vg appears in the hemolymph of H. virescens about 6 h after moth eclosion. Vg may be separated into two apoproteins (ApoVg-I and ApoVg-II) by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). The molecular weights were calculated to be 156,065 ± 800 for ApoVg-I and 39,887 ± 323 for ApoVg-II. SDS-PAGE analysis revealed that the female hemolymph Vg polypeptides appear to be identical to those from eggs but are absent in male hemolymph. Vg concentration was significantly higher in mated females than in virgin females of the same age at 48 h after emergence. Rates of egg production increased as Vg production increased; rates of egg production in mated females were significantly higher than those of virgin females at 48, 72, 96, and 120 h postemergence. Vg production is dependent on JH, because hemolymph from decapitated females lacked Vg while that of decapitated females treated with synthetic JH had Vg at levels comparable to similarly aged, normal H. virescens females. Hemolymph JH titers in mated females were significantly higher compared with those in virgin females at all sampling periods. The high JH level in mated females may explain the high Vg and egg production in mated H. virescens. Arch. Insect Biochem. Physiol. 34:287–300, 1997. © 1997 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Fenoxycarb (FC) effects were studied on juvenile hormone (JH) titers and JH‐esterase activities in the silkworm, B. Mori. In the literature, FC was observed to induce high JH titers but also to act without corpora allata (CA). These contradictory results did not permit us to conclude whether FC was a potent JH mimic or it was acting through the enhancement of JH titers in the hemolymph. Analysis of hemolymph JH‐esterase activities during the last larval instar reveals that FC was not a JH‐esterase inhibitor. Considering JHs, only JH II was detected in the European hybrid 200×300. Furthermore, JH titer was exactly identical in control and FC‐treated larvae, i.e., it dropped during the first 2 days of the last larval instar and became undetectable after day 2. This result is important since it contradicts the generally admitted concept that FC was acting by increasing the titer of JH. On the contrary, it was found that, despite its non‐terpenoid chemical structure, FC might be a JH mimic. In addition, FC suspected contamination of mulberry leaves was analyzed from a physiological viewpoint. We observed that "contaminated" mulberry leaves‐fed larvae became permanent larvae through the inhibition of their prothoracic glands (PG) activity and without any modification of their JH titers, i.e., exactly as for FC‐treated larvae. This last point adds information concerning the suspected implication of FC in the induction of the non‐spinning syndrome. Arch. Insect Biochem. Parents can influence the phenotypes of their offspring via a number of mechanisms. In harvester ants, whether female progeny develop into workers or daughter queens is strongly influenced by the age and temperature conditions experienced by their mother, which is associated with variation in maternal ecdysteroid deposition in fertilized eggs. In many insects, juvenile hormone (JH) is antagonistic to ecdysteroid release, suggesting that seasonal and age-based variation in maternal JH titers may explain maternal effects on offspring size and reproductive caste. To test this hypothesis, we artificially increased maternal JH titers with methoprene, a JH analog, in laboratory colonies of two Pogonomyrmex populations exhibiting genetic caste determination. Increasing maternal JH resulted in a 50% increase in worker body size, as well as a sharp reduction in total number of progeny reared, but did not alter the genotype of progeny reared to adulthood. The intergenerational effect of JH manipulation was not mediated by a reduction in ecdysteroid deposition into eggs; instead, changes in egg size, trophic egg availability or brood/worker ratio may have altered the nutritional environment of developing larvae. Egg ecdysteroid content was significantly negatively correlated with natural variation in worker body size, however, suggesting that there are multiple independent routes by which queens can modify offspring phenotypes.  相似文献

Juvenile hormones (JH) I, II, and III were monitored in hemolymph of virgin and mated females of various ages in Heliothis virescens. JH I was the predominant homologue followed by JH II, but JH II was present at a higher level in young virgin females. JH III was detectable only at a low level. In virgin females, hemolymph JH titers were low at emergence (2.2ng/ml-total amount of JH I and JH II), but increased thereafter and reached a maximum at 24h of age (53.5ng/ml). At 30h and 36h of age, JH titers dropped to a low level, but increased again in older virgin females. After mating, JH titers increased significantly. JH titers at 0h after uncoupling (137.4ng/ml) were nearly 3 times as high as those in 24-h-old virgin females. Within 6h after uncoupling, JH titers decreased slightly, but titers increased with age of mated females and reached a level of 320.2ng/ml hemolymph at 72h after uncoupling. The titer of JH I and JH II was correlated highly with total number of eggs produced (r(2)=0.70, P<0.001). Mating stimulated JH production, resulting in an increase in egg production.  相似文献

Egg dumping, or abandoning eggs and young to the care of other conspecifics, results in an extreme form of alloparental care. It is unclear, however, if egg dumpers discriminate among kin and nonkin egg recipients. In the lace bug Gargaphia solani (Heteroptera: Tingidae), some females with eggs (guards) also accept and defend eggs of conspecifics. Other females (egg dumpers) abandon their offspring after oviposition, leaving a single guard as the caregiver. We asked if egg dumpers preferentially dump their eggs among unguarded eggs of kin or nonkin. When given a choice between dumping among eggs of full siblings and eggs of nonsiblings, most eggs (67%) were dumped with full siblings' eggs. Furthermore, egg dumpers were just as likely to oviposit among eggs of kin with whom they had interacted on a shared host plant during juvenile development as they were to oviposit with kin reared on different host plants. Thus, egg dumpers discriminate kin by using cues associated with eggs, and such cues are not likely to be acquired through interaction on a common host plant environment. Newly-ecdysed last instar larvae ofH. zea grouped into 100-, 200-, 300-, or 400-mg categories were fed diet containing precocene II or given precocene II topically on the abdomen. The time for larvae to reach a maximal weight, time to pupation, growth rate, and the amount of precocene II excreted were calculated. Younger larvae of lower weights, which were fed or topically treated with precocene II required more time to reach their maximal weight, had a lower maximal weight, a lower growth rate, and required more time to pupate than control larvae. Older larvae represented by the largest weight category were less sensitive to precocene II, had a shorter delay in reaching maximal weight, and a shorter delay in the time to pupation than control larvae; larvae in the largest weight category that were fed precocene II also had smaller decreases in the growth rate. Growth rate declines for larvae given topical doses of precocene II, however, were largest for the oldest larvae. All larvae given a single topical dose excreted precocene II for several days and were most efficient at eliminating smaller doses; larger, older larvae excreted more precocene II than smaller, younger larvae. Age-dependent responses to precocene II indicate that growth and metabolic processes, as well as xenobiotic metabolism, change in last instar larvae.  相似文献

Analysis of extracts of hemolymph obtained from sexually mature alate females of Solenopsis invicta from monogyne colonies resulted in identification of juvenile hormone III (JH III). The average amount of JH III was 0.32±0.04 pmol/μmolof hemolymph. Topical application of 0.038 pmol of JH III was sufficient to stimulate alates to shed their wings in the presence of the queen. The time in which alates were induced to dealate decreased linearly with increasing concentrations of JH III from 0.038 to 3.8 pmol. However, higher JH III concentrations deviated from linearity and did not reach dealation times comparable with those that occur after mating flights. Thus, it appears that the mechanism of dealation that occurs when female alates are out of the influence of their queen is different from the one associated with mating flights. Application of 0.42 μmol of precocene II inhibited dealation of alates in queenless colonies. However, this inhibition was reversed after applying 38 pmol JH III to precocene-treated alates. The sizes of corpora allata (CA) from sexuals treated with JH III did not differ from those of controls. However, the sizes of CA were reduced in alates treated with precocene II. The results indicated that JH was important to dealation.  相似文献

Summary

Juvenile hormone (JH) and α-naphthyl acetate (α-NA) esterase activity was measured on a daily basis during embryogenesis of the house cricket, Acheta domesticus. In eggs dissected from the lateral oviducts and embryos through blastokinesis, there were elevated levels of nonspecific JH esterase activity. The JH esterase activity could not be resolved from the α-NA esterase activity by gel filtration chromatography and the metabolism of both substrates was inhibited equally by 0,0-diisopropyl phosphorofluoridate (DFP). From blastokinesis through egg hatch, the JH esterase activity was maintained at relatively low levels and was resolved from the α-NA esterase activity by gel filtration. The α-NA esterase activity was inhibited by DFP while the JH esterase activity was relatively unaffected. Low JH titers in eggs must be maintained through blastokinesis for normal development. Elevated JH esterase activity in eggs during this period appears to have a functional role in the metabolism of maternal JH in the egg.  相似文献

Injections of octopamine, dopamine, and the octopaminergic agonists, clonidine and naphazoline, into the thoracic hemocoel enhanced female insemination in sugar-fed (sexually unreceptive)Phormia regina. Topical applications of the juvenile hormone (JH) analogue, methoprene, also enhanced female insemination in sugar-fed (sexually unreceptive)P. regina. Since JH plays a role in receptivity in protein-fed females, it was originally hypothesized that one agonist, clonidine, enhanced female insemination by acting on the corpus allatum (CA) to increase JH biosynthesis. Two or three doses of the antiallatal agent, precocene II, prior to administration of clonidine, did not inhibit clonidine-enhanced female insemination. Removal of the corpus allatum also did not have a significant effect on clonidine-enhanced female insemination. Measurement of juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis/release in corpora allata, which were removed at 1, 3, 5, and 7 h postinjection, revealed that clonidine does not affect JH biosynthesis/release. Our study reveals a possible role for the biogenic amines in female insemination in insects. We suggest that the octopaminergic agonist, clonidine, acts downstream from the corpus allatum on the regulatory mechanisms involved in female insemination.  相似文献

Female Aedes aegypti that were fed blood and immediately abdominally ligated did not deposit yolk. Injection of 20-hydroxyecdysone (1.5–5.0 ng) or topical application of juvenile hormone (JH) analogue methoprene (25 pg) did not induce vitellogenesis in these abdomens. When blood-gorged ligated abdomens were treated with both hormones, however, vitellogenesis was stimulated in 60% of treated animals. Rocket immunoelectrophoresis indicated that vitellin concentration per follicle in treated animals was similar to that in intact controls. When ligated abdomens were first treated with methoprene and immediately injected with a crude head extract of egg development neurosecretory hormone, vitellogenin synthesis was induced at a rate similar to that in blood-fed controls. Methoprene at this concentration (25 pg), did not cause an increase in whole-body ecdysteroid titers. Larger amounts of methoprene (1.65 ng) were needed to stimulate egg development and ecdysteroid production. Implantation of ecdysone-secreting ovaries into ligated abdomens did not stimulate vitellogenesis in the recipients. However, in recipients that were first treated with methoprene (25 pg), implantation of ecdysone-secreting ovaries resulted in normal egg development. These experiments indicate that the appearance of JH precedes 20-hydroxyecdysone in stimulating vitellogenesis following blood feeding in Ae. aegypti.  相似文献

Summary Ultrastructural studies on corpora allata (CA) from different stages during the first gonadotropic cycle of the cockroach Blattella germanica have shown well defined changes which have a correspondence with oocyte length, CA volume and juvenile hormone (JH) biosynthesis. The most significant variations concern the mitochondria and the endoplasmic reticulum. Topically applied precocene II (P II) at a dose of 200 g induced a transient arrest of CA function, although cytotoxic effects were occasionally observed. When CA were maintained in vitro with 10-3 M of P II, a relationship between the time of treatment (3, 6 or 9 h) and the intensity of the effects was apparent. The 9-h treatment led to an irreversible inhibition of JH production which parallels the severe damages observed in the CA (membrane lysis, nuclear pyknosis, vacuolization). Equivalent studies performed with the chroman derivative 3,4-dihydroprecocene II (DHP II) showed that it is less active than P II. Only treatments as severe as 12 h of incubation with a 10-3 M concentration elicited cytotoxic effects which could be due to radical species involved in the in situ oxidative bioactivation of DHP II. Thus, this compound could be regarded as a new type of pro-allatocidin.  相似文献

Knowledge of the selective pressures favouring parental care can inform our understanding of the evolutionary origins and transitions of sociality in insects. Here, we report upon investigations designed to estimate the costs and benefits of parental care in the egg‐guarding hibiscus harlequin bug Tectocoris diophthalmus (Heteroptera: Scutelleridae). We found that the presence of a guarding female had no effect on hatching success under benign laboratory conditions. In the wild, however, guarding decreased the likelihood of total clutch failure, and produced a fourfold greater egg‐hatching rate relative to unguarded clutches. Females guarded against generalist invertebrate egg predators, including conspecific nymphs, but were ineffective against hymenopteran egg parasitoids. Females continued to feed during the guarding period and exhibited no signs of weight loss or increased mortality due to this behaviour. We did not observe the production of subsequent clutches in any experimental females; therefore, the lifetime fecundity costs of providing parental care in T. diophthalmus remain indeterminate. Overall, maternal egg guarding appears to function as a relatively low cost–low benefit strategy that increases hatching success by protecting against predation – but not parasitism.  相似文献

In diet choice tests, newly-ecdysed fifth instar Heliothis zea larvae randomly chose diet containing 4 mM precocene II or diet without precocene II but initially preferred to feed on diet without precocene II. After two days, however, they were found more frequently on diet containing precocene II. Nevertheless, larval growth and development were inhibited when forced to eat diet containing precocene II. Removal of the maxillae, the site of the primary gustatory receptors, did not prevent the growth inhibition caused by larval consumption of diet with precocene II. Topical treatments with precocene II also caused larval growth inhibition, and daily treatments were more detrimental to the larvae than a large single dose. Addition of methylenedioxyprecocene (6,7-methylenedioxy-2,2-dimethylchromene) to the diet did not reverse the observed larval growth inhibition and this compound was itself significantly toxic. These results indicate that larval growth and development are disrupted after precocene II ingestion, but not because of preingestive discrimination by olfaction and gustation.  相似文献

An effective constant dose (55 μg) of precocene II (PII) was topically tested against the last three instars of Spodoptera littoralis (Boisd.) larvae. Application of PII induced morphogenetic abnormalities typical of juvenile hormone (JH) excess. The resultant imperfect insects included larval‐pupal mosaic and partial or severe cases of untanned pupae. The sixth‐instar larvae were more sensitive to PII administration than the two preceding instars. However, sensitivity of the last larval instar to PII varied with the timing of dose application relative to the developmental status of the larvae. Whereas the newly ecdysed (0‐day old) larvae were more sensitive, the older larvae of the same sixth‐instar showed sharp decrease in their sensitivity to PII with a concomitant increase of their age. Application of a single dose (5 μg) of JH I to PII pre‐treated larvae significantly (P < 0.001) reduced the production of imperfect insects where many PH‐treated larvae developed successfully to apparent normal pupae. Although a single dose of PII was more effective on S. littoralis larvae than repeated daily doses, the effectiveness of JHI‐therapy to PH pre‐treated larvae by repeated doses was less effective in producing perfect insects than JH‐therapy to PII pre‐treated larvae by single doses. The reversal of any of these by applied JHI is quite interesting but the mechanisms remain to be unraveled.  相似文献

The anti-allatin substance, 7-ethoxy-precocene II (= “precocene III”) was topically applied to eggs of Locusta migratoria migratorioides with fully grown embryos in stage XX (about 64 ± 4% of the whole period of egg development). A day after precocene application the eggs were washed for 10–15 s in acetone and then transferred to clean containers for removing precocene residues and for preventing contamination at hatching. The treatment induced prothetelic morphogenetic disturbances which became overt in the subsequent hoppers; the effect was dose dependent and the ED50 (= effective anti-allatin dose 50%) was low, 20.5 μg precocene III per g fresh egg weight (= 0.37 μg per egg). Quite similar results were obtained following application of precocene III to eggs with embryos in stage XXI (73 ± 4% of the egg development). These findings and direct examination of histological sections of the embryonic corpora allata demonstrated that precocene chemically allatectomizes late Locusta embryos. The lethal effect of precocene III was dependent on the washing. When the eggs were washed in acetone a day after application, mortality did not occur in a dose-dependent way; even the highest dose applied, 256 μg precocene III per egg (= 14405 μg per g fresh weight), was less than the LD50 (lethal dose 50%). In contrast, without washing mortality was dose dependent, but it occurred later, at or after hatching; the LD50 was 1334.9 μg per g (= 22.7 μg/egg). The results show that the late embryos are highly susceptible to the anti-allatin effect of the precocene, but are extremely insusceptible to its lethal effect; toward hatching, however, susceptibility to the lethal effect becomes marked. With doses between 45–14405 μg precocene III per g fresh egg weight, the anti-allatin effect became overt by a quite-uniform belated morphogenetic response. All hoppers which hatched from precocenetreated eggs were morphogenetically normal in the 1st instar and in the beginning of the 2nd instar, but the duration of the 2nd instar was almost doubled and at the end of this instar over 96% of the locusts died in the moult, being unable to shed the exuvia. Artificial removal of the apolyzed old cuticle revealed 3rd instar prothetelic adultiforms. These results and some data in the literature indicate that allatectomy of the embryo does not result in prothetelic morphogenetic disturbances in the 1st and early 2nd instar larvae and may impose the question what is the role of the juvenile hormone in late embryos and early larvae.  相似文献

Semelparity is prevalent in arthropod species that exhibit maternal care. Previous hypotheses postulated that long‐term maternal care constrains future reproduction in females, leading to the evolution of semelparity. Nevertheless, females may occasionally lose all or part of their offspring because of predation or other causes. Where females lose the first egg mass for any reason, the potential for females to produce an additional egg mass could be adaptive. This potential may be found widely among semelparous arthropods as a conditional strategy. We tested this hypothesis using the crab spider Lysiteles coronatus whose females guard their egg mass against predators. L. coronatus females did not consume food during the 40‐d guarding period; this resulted in a 30.2% loss in their weight. When the females were separated from their eggs immediately after oviposition and were provided with food, they resumed feeding and their ovaries redeveloped. Dissection of guarding females indicated that their ovaries developed temporarily during egg guarding and that the developed ovaries were subsequently reabsorbed. These results suggest that the females maintain the potential to produce a second egg mass in case of egg loss, but that this potential declines towards the end of the guarding period. Field observations showed that a small fraction of the females oviposited in late July, when most females had completed egg guarding. The size of the late broods was similar to the oocyte numbers that we found in the females fed in the laboratory. This result suggests that a few females produced a second egg mass after they had lost the first one. Thus, we suggest that facultative second oviposition in L. coronatus females has evolved as an adaptation to egg loss, and that the development of ovaries during the guarding period is intrinsically programmed for compensatory oviposition.  相似文献
