The water relations, the photosynthetic capacity and the pigment content of leaves, i.e. chlorophylls, carotenes and xanthophylls, were analysed during the summer drought and recovery after autumn rainfalls in lavender ( Lavandula stoechas L.) plants grown in Mediterranean field conditions. Summer drought caused photoinhibition of photosynthesis and significant decreases in chlorophylls (by ca 75%), β -carotene (by ca 65%), and lutein and neoxanthin (by ca 50%), although their contents remained unaltered between predawn and midday, suggesting a progressive decrease in response to drought. In contrast, the levels of violaxanthin decreased from predawn to midday, giving rise to enhanced formation of zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin in high light. Zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin formation was not induced by water deficit. Although the levels of photosynthetic pigments were severely affected by water deficit, carotenoids decreased less than chlorophylls, which resulted in increased levels of carotenoids per unit of chlorophyll. We conclude that the enhanced formation of zeaxanthin in high light and the increased levels of carotenoids per unit of chlorophyll observed in water-stressed plants may help to avoid photoinhibitory damage to the photosynthetic apparatus.  相似文献

Morphological and functional characteristics of Plantago media L. leaves were compared for plants growing at different light regimes on limestone outcrops in Southern Timan (62°45′N, 55°49′E). The plants grown in open areas under exposure to full sunlight had small leaves with low pigment content and high specific leaf weight; these leaves exhibited high photosynthetic capacity and elevated water use efficiency at high irradiance. The maximum photochemical activity of photosystem II (F v/F m) in leaves of sun plants remained at the level of about 0.8 throughout the day. The photosynthetic apparatus of sun plants was resistant to excess photosynthetically active radiation, mostly due to non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (qN). This quenching was promoted by elevated deepoxiation of violaxanthin cycle pigments. Accumulation of zeaxanthin, a photoprotective pigment in sun plant leaves was observed already in the morning hours. The plant leaves grown in the shade of dense herbage were significantly larger than the sun leaves, with pigment content 1.5–2.0 times greater than in sun leaves; these leaves had low qN values and did not need extensive deepoxidation of violaxanthin cycle pigments. The data reveal the morphophysiological plasticity of plantain plants in relation to lighting regime. Environmental conditions can facilitate the formation of the ecotype with photosynthetic apparatus resistant to photoinhibition. Owing to this adjustment, hoary plantain plants are capable of surviving in ecotopes with high insolation.  相似文献

The epoxy‐xanthophylls antheraxanthin and violaxanthin are key precursors of light‐harvesting carotenoids and participate in the photoprotective xanthophyll cycle. Thus, the invention of zeaxanthin epoxidase (ZEP) catalyzing their formation from zeaxanthin has been a fundamental step in the evolution of photosynthetic eukaryotes. ZEP genes have only been found in Viridiplantae and chromalveolate algae with secondary plastids of red algal ancestry, suggesting that ZEP evolved in the Viridiplantae and spread to chromalveolates by lateral gene transfer. By searching publicly available sequence data from 11 red algae covering all currently recognized red algal classes we identified ZEP candidates in three species. Phylogenetic analyses showed that the red algal ZEP is most closely related to ZEP proteins from photosynthetic chromalveolates possessing secondary plastids of red algal origin. Its enzymatic activity was assessed by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analyses of red algal pigment extracts and by cloning and functional expression of the ZEP gene from Madagascaria erythrocladioides in leaves of the ZEP‐deficient aba2 mutant of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia. Unlike other ZEP enzymes examined so far, the red algal ZEP introduces only a single epoxy group into zeaxanthin, yielding antheraxanthin instead of violaxanthin. The results indicate that ZEP evolved before the split of Rhodophyta and Viridiplantae and that chromalveolates acquired ZEP from the red algal endosymbiont and not by lateral gene transfer. Moreover, the red algal ZEP enables engineering of transgenic plants incorporating antheraxanthin instead of violaxanthin in their photosynthetic machinery.  相似文献

In this work we characterize the changes induced by iron deficiency in the pigment composition of sugar beet (Beta vulgaris L.) leaves. When sugar beet plants were grown hydroponically under limited iron supply, neoxanthin and β-carotene decreased concomitantly with chlorophyll a, whereas lutein and the carotenoids within the xanthophyll cycle were less affected. Iron deficiency caused major increases in the lutein/chlorophyll a and xanthophyll cycle pigments/chlorophyll a molar ratios. Xanthophyll cycle carotenoids in Fe-deficient plants underwent epoxidations and de-epoxidations in response to ambient light conditions. In dark adapted Fe-deficient plants most of the xanthophyll cycle pigment pool was in the epoxidated form violaxanthin. We show, both by HPLC and by in vivo 505 nanometers absorbance changes, that in Fe deficient plants and in response to light, the de-epoxidated forms antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin were rapidly formed at the expense of violaxanthin. Several hours after returning to dark, the xanthophyll cycle was shifted again toward violaxanthin. The ratio of variable to maximum chlorophyll fluorescence from intact leaves was decreased by iron deficiency. However, in iron deficient leaves this ratio was little affected by light conditions which displace the xanthophyll cycle toward epoxidation or de-epoxidation. This suggests that the functioning of the xanthophyll cycle is not necessarily linked to protection against excess light input.  相似文献

Seasonal changes in pigment composition of sun and shade leavesof cork oak (Quercus suber) were studied under field conditionsin Portugal. Expanding leaves showed a high concentration ofxanthophyll cycle components, violaxanthin, antheraxanthin andzeaxanthin. The pool of violaxanthin plus antheraxanthin pluszeaxanthin (V+A+Z) varied greatly between the seasons, beinghigher at the end of summer and in winter when photosynthesiswas limited by water stress and cold, respectively. The sizeof V+A+Z pool was associated to synthesis of zeaxanthin in responseto an excess of light. In sun leaves, midday A+Z relative contentwas positively correlated with the V+A+Z pool, whereas in shadeleaves A+Z decreased with leaf ageing. In both leaf types A+Zwas positively correlated with the non-photochemical quenching(NPQ) of chlorophyll a fluorescence. However, in winter NPQdid not change significantly throughout the day, whereas the(A+Z)/(V+A+Z) increased following the typical daily trend observedin other seasons. Leaf Xanthophyll content and composition in sun and shade determined by HPLC   总被引:39,自引:0,他引:39
As a part of our investigations to test the hypothesis that zeaxanthin formed by reversible de-epoxidation of violaxanthin serves to dissipate any excessive and potentially harmful excitation energy we determined the influence of light climate on the size of the xanthophyll cycle pool (violaxanthin + antheraxanthin + zeaxanthin) in leaves of a number of species of higher plants. The maximum amount of zeaxanthin that can be formed by de-epoxidation of violaxanthin and antheraxanthin is determined by the pool size of the xanthophyll cycle. To quantitate the individual leaf carotenoids a rapid, sensitive and accurate HPLC method was developed using a non-endcapped Zorbax ODS column, giving baseline separation of lutein and zeaxanthin as well as of other carotenoids and Chl a and b.The size of the xanthophyll cycle pool, both on a basis of light-intercepting leaf area and of light-harvesting chlorophyll, was ca. four times greater in sun-grown leaves of a group of ten sun tolerant species than in shade-grown leaves in a group of nine shade tolerant species. In contrast there were no marked or consistent differences between the two groups in the content of the other major leaf xanthophylls, lutein and neoxanthin. Also, in each of four species examined the xanthophyll pool size increased with an increase in the amount of light available during leaf development whereas there was little change in the content of the other xanthophylls. However, the -carotene/-carotene ratio decreased and little or no -carotene was detected in sun-grown leaves. Among shade-grown leaves the -carotene/-carotene ratio was considerably higher in species deemed to be umbrophilic than in species deemed to be heliophilic. The percentage of the xanthophyll cycle pool present as violaxanthin (di-epoxy-zeaxanthin) at solar noon was 96–100% for shade-grown plants and 4–53% for sun-grown plants with zeaxanthin accounting for most of the balance. The percentage of zeaxanthin in leaves exposed to midday solar radiation was higher in those with low than in those with high photosynthetic capacity. The results are consistent with the hypothesis that the xanthophyll cycle is involved in the regulation of energy dissipation in the pigment bed, thereby preventing a buildup of excessive excitation energy at the reaction centers.Abbreviations A antheraxanthin - C -carotene - C -carotene - EPS epoxidation state (V+0.5A)/(V+A+Z) - L lutein - N neoxanthin - PFD photon flux density - V violaxanthin - Z zeaxanthin C.I.W.-D.P.B. Spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) plants were acclimated to 1° C or maintained at 18° C under the same light regime (260–300 mol photons·m–2·s–1). The cold acclimation led to several metabolic and biochemical changes that apparently include improved protection of the photosynthetic apparatus against active oxygen species. In particular, cold-acclimated leaves exhibited a considerably higher ascorbate content and significantly increased activities of superoxide dismutase, ascorbate peroxidase, and monodehydroascorbate reductase in the chloroplasts. The level of dehydroascorbate reductase did not alter. Catalase activity decreased. The photosynthetic pigment composition of cold-acclimated spinach was characterized by increased levels of the xanthophylls lutein + zeaxanthin and violaxanthin. The observed changes are discussed in terms of their possible relevance for plant resistance to photoinhibition at chilling temperatures.Abbreviations DHA dehydroascorbate - GSH reduced glutathione - MDA monodehydroascorbate - SOD superoxide dismutase The authors thank the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for financial support of this study.  相似文献

The influence of photosynthetic activity on the light-dependent adaptation of the pool size of the violaxanthin cycle pigments (violaxanthin + antheraxanthin + zeaxanthin) was studied in leaves of wild-type and transgenic potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) plants. The genetically manipulated plants expressed an antisense mRNA coding for the chloroplastic fructose-bisphosphatase. Chl fluorescence quenching analysis revealed that the transformed plants exhibited a greatly impaired electron transport capacity. Light-limited and light-saturated non-photochemical quenching was strongly enhanced in the mRNA antisense potato plants. After 7 d of adaptation at various high photosynthetic photon flux densities (PPFDs), the violaxanthin cycle pool size increased, with a progressive elevation in PPFD. The pool size was higher for transgenic potatoes than for wild-type plants at all PPFDs. This difference vanished when pool size was correlated with the PPFD in excess of photosynthesis, as indicated by the epoxidation state of the violaxanthin cycle. Contrasting results were obtained for tobacco; in this species, photosynthetic activity did not affect the pool size. We conclude that regulatory mechanisms exist in potato, by which photosynthetic activity can influence the violaxanthin cycle pool size. Furthermore, evidence is provided that this adaptation of the pool size may contribute to an improved photoprotection of the photosynthetic apparatus under high-light conditions. However, tobacco plants seem to regulate their pool size independently of photosynthetic activity.  相似文献

The xanthophyll cycle is a regulatory mechanism operating in the photosynthetic apparatus of plants. It consists of the conversion of the xanthophyll pigment violaxanthin to zeaxanthin, and vice versa, in response to light intensity. According to the current understanding, one of the modes of regulatory activity of the cycle is associated with the influence on a molecular organization of pigment-protein complexes. In the present work, we analyzed the effect of violaxanthin and zeaxanthin on the molecular organization of the LHCII complex, in the environment of membranes formed with chloroplast lipids. Nanoscale imaging based on atomic force microscopy (AFM) showed that the presence of exogenous xanthophylls promotes the formation of the protein supramolecular structures. Nanoscale infrared (IR) absorption analysis based on AFM-IR nanospectroscopy suggests that zeaxanthin promotes the formation of LHCII supramolecular structures by forming inter-molecular β-structures. Meanwhile, the molecules of violaxanthin act as “molecular spacers” preventing self-aggregation of the protein, potentially leading to uncontrolled dissipation of excitation energy in the complex. This latter mechanism was demonstrated with the application of fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy. The intensity-averaged chlorophyll a fluorescence lifetime determined in the LHCII samples without exogenous xanthophylls at the level of 0.72 ns was longer in the samples containing exogenous violaxanthin (2.14 ns), but shorter under the presence of zeaxanthin (0.49 ns) thus suggesting a role of this xanthophyll in promotion of the formation of structures characterized by effective excitation quenching. This mechanism can be considered as a representation of the overall photoprotective activity of the xanthophyll cycle.  相似文献

Two-year-old rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) plants were subjected to severe stress by exposure to prolonged drought during a Mediterranean summer. Severely stressed plants recovered completely after the autumn rainfalls although the relative water content remained below 35% for 3 months and the chlorophyll content of leaves was reduced by up to 85% during the drought. In severe stress: (i) α-tocopherol increased 9-fold per g dry weight and 20-fold per unit of chlorophyll; (ii) lutein and β-carotene contents decreased on a dry-weight basis, but an 80% increase in lutein and constant levels of β-carotene were observed on a chlorophyll basis; (iii) there were transient and sustained increases in the de-epoxidation state of the xanthophyll cycle; and (iv) the highly oxidised abietane diterpene isorosmanol increased 8-fold as a result of the oxidation of carnosic acid. With the autumn rainfalls, water status, α-tocopherol and violaxanthin recovered first and the levels of photosynthetic pigments and abietane diterpenes increased later. The photoprotection conferred by the xanthophyll cycle and the antioxidant function of tocopherols, lutein and diterpenes may help to avoid irreversible damage in severe drought, making possible the recovery of functional membranes after the autumn rainfalls. Besides, chlorophyll loss reduces the amount of photons absorbed by leaves, which enhances the photoprotective and antioxidant capacity of leaves per amount of photons absorbed, since the ratios of xanthophylls, α-tocopherol and abietane diterpenes to chlorophyll increase. Tadmor is a Syrian barley landrace that has adapted to semi-arid environments. Its leaves are pale green because of a 30% decrease in the chlorophyll and the carotenoid content of the chloroplasts (leading to a 7·5% decrease in light absorption) compared with barley genotypes that are not adapted to harsh Mediterranean climatic conditions (e.g. Plaisant). This difference in pigment content was attenuated during growth of the plants in strong light, but was strongly amplified when strong light was combined with a high growth temperature. The low pigment content of Tadmor leaves was not associated with significant changes in the pigment distribution between the photosystems or between the reaction centres of the photosystems and their associated chlorophyll antennae. No significant difference in the photosynthetic activity (O2 production per unit absorbed light) was observed between Tadmor and Plaisant. The conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin in strong light and its reversal in darkness were much faster and operated at a higher capacity in Tadmor leaves compared with Plaisant leaves, resulting in an increased photostability of photosystem II in the former leaves. The accelerated xanthophylls interconversion in the Syrian landrace was associated with, and possibly related to, an increased fluidity of the thylakoid membranes. The lipid peroxide level was lower in Tadmor compared with Plaisant. In contrast, no difference was found in the non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence between the two barley genotypes. The data indicate that the pale green Syrian landrace is equipped to survive excessive irradiance through a passive reduction of the light absorptance of its leaves, which mitigates the heating effects of strong light, and through the active protection of its photochemical apparatus by a rapid xanthophyll cycling.  相似文献

Mechanisms of adaptation of the photosynthetic apparatus at the level of pigment complex in a shade-tolerant bugle plant (Ajuga reptans L.) grown at full solar irradiation in an open plot were studied. In “sun” plants, the content of photosynthetic pigments decreased markedly as compared to “shade” plants grown under a forest canopy at 5–10% of the full solar irradiation. In leaves of sun plants, the portion of β-carotene and lutein in the carotenoid spectrum was higher than in shade plant leaves, antheraxanthin and zeaxanthin were present, and de-epoxidation of violaxanthin was by an order of magnitude higher in sun plant leaves reaching 40%. The data obtained indicate the role of the violaxanthin cycle in the protection of photosynthetic apparatus in a shade-tolerant plant against destruction under excessive irradiation.  相似文献

Moderately elevated temperatures induce a rapid increase in the heat and light resistance of photosystem II (PSII) in higher-plant leaves. This phenomenon was studied in intact potato leaves exposed to 35 °C for 2 h, using chlorophyll fluorometry, kinetic and difference spectrophotometry and photoacoustics. The 35 °C treatment was observed to cause energetic uncoupling between carotenoids and chlorophylls: (i) the steady-state chlorophyll fluorescence emission excited by a blue light beam (490 nm) was noticeably reduced as compared to fluorescence elicited by orange light (590 nm) and (ii) the quantum yield for photosynthetic oxygen evolution in blue light (400–500 nm) was preferentially reduced relative to the quantum yield measured in red light (590–710 nm). Analysis of the chlorophyll-fluorescence and light-absorption characteristics of the heated leaves showed numerous analogies with the fluorescence and absorption changes associated with the light-induced xanthophyll cycle activity, indicating that the carotenoid species involved in the heat-induced pigment uncoupling could be the xanthophyll violaxanthin. More precisely, the 35 °C treatment was observed to accelerate and amplify the non-photochemical quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence (in both moderate red light and strong white light) and to cause an increase in leaf absorbance in the blue-green spectral region near 520 nm, as do strong light treatments which induce the massive conversion of violaxanthin to zeaxanthin. Interestingly, short exposure of potato leaves to strong light also provoked a significant increase in the stability of PSII to heat stress. It was also observed that photosynthetic electron transport was considerably more inhibited by chilling temperatures in 35 °C-treated leaves than in untreated leaves. Further, pre-exposure of potato leaves to 35 °C markedly increased the amplitude and the rate of light-induced changes in leaf absorbance at 505 nm (indicative of xanthophyll cycle activity), suggesting the possibility that moderately elevated temperature increased the accessibility of violaxanthin to the membrane-located de-epoxidase. This was supported by the quantitative analysis of the xanthophyll-cycle pigments before and after the 35 °C treatment, showing light-independent accumulation of zeaxanthin during mild heat stress. Based on these results, we propose that the rapid adjustment of the heat resistance of PSII may involve a modification of the interaction between violaxanthin and the light-harvesting complexes of PSII. As a consequence, the thermoresistance of PSII could be enhanced either directly through a conformational change of PSII or indirectly via a carotenoid-dependent modulation of membrane lipid fluidity.Abbreviations and Symbols Fo and Fm initial and maximal level of chlorophyll fluorescence, respectively - Fv = Fm — Fo variable chlorophyll fluorescence - LHC(II) light-harvesting chlorophylla/b-protein complexes (of PSII) - photoacoustically measured quantum yield of photosynthetic oxygen evolution (in relative values) - P fluorimetrically measured quantum yield of PSII photochemistry in the light - PFD photon flux density - qE pH dependent quenching of chlorophyll fluorescence We thank Dr. J-L Montillet (CEA-Cadarache) for the use of his HPLC apparatus and Professor Y. We studied carotenoids composition and the activities of the xanthophylls pigments in evergreen conifers (Abies sibirica, Juniperus communis, Picea obovata) and dwarf-shrub (Vaccinium vitis-idaea), and in wintergreen herbaceous plants (Ajuga reptans, Pyrola rotundifolia) growing near Syktyvkar (61°67(/) N 50°77(/) E). The carotenoid pool consisted mainly of following xanthophylls: lutein (70%), neoxanthin (7-10%) and a xanthophylls cycle component - violaxanthin (3-15%). Zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin were found in conifer samples collected in December-March while in other species - during all year. A direct connection between xanthophyll pigment de-epoxidation level and light energy thermal dissipation was shown only for boreal conifer species. It is proposed that zeaxanthin plays a central role in the dissipation of excess excitation energy (nonphotochemical quenching) in the antenna of photosystem II (PSII). We conclude that the increase in the extent of de-epoxidation is beneficial for the retention of PSII activity for conifers in early spring and for herbs in summer.  相似文献

Leaves are the main photosynthetically active tissues in most plants. However, stems and fruits are also important for the overall carbon balance of the plant because of their contribution to fixation of the CO2 released by respiration. Photosynthesis could not be possible without a complete set of photoprotection mechanisms, which include the ubiquitous violaxanthin (V) cycle and the taxonomically restricted lutein epoxide (Lx) cycle. In this work, we characterise carotenoid stoichiometry in photosynthetic stems and fruits of avocado in comparison with that of leaves and specifically whether Lx is present in these tissues and also whether it is involved in a light‐driven cycle. Avocado was selected as model species to study whether both cycles were functional in non‐foliar photosynthetic structures (stems and fruits). An unusual pigment composition was observed in avocado fruit, with a high content of cis‐V and cis‐Lx, suggesting a different photosynthetic function. In stems, both xanthophylls de‐epoxidated upon illumination, but only V recovered in the dark, indicating the existence of a possible ‘truncated’ Lx cycle. Lx in fruits was de‐epoxidated only when its pool was higher than a threshold of 30 mmol mol?1 chlorophyll, indicating a high non‐photoconvertible pool of Lx. We conclude that, at least in stems, the dynamic regulation of photosynthetic activity could also depend on the Lx cycle.  相似文献

The changes in photosynthetic activity and composition of pigments induced by changes in temperature were examined in the third leaf of three chilling-tolerant and three chilling-sensitive genotypes of maize (Zea mays L.). The plants were grown under a controlled environment at a photon flux density of 550 mol m-2 s-1, a 12 h photoperiod and at a suboptimal temperature of 14/12 C (day/night) until the full expansion of the third leaf. After this treatment, the chilling-tolerant genotypes, when compared with the sensitive ones, displayed a higher photosynthetic activity, a higher content of chlorophyll (Chl) a+b, a higher Chl a/b ratio, a larger total carotenoid pool size as well as a different carotenoid composition. When temperature was subsequently increased to 24/22 C for 3 d the composition of the pigments changed, but the chilling-sensitive genotypes, while adjusting their lower Chl a/b ratio and their different carotenoid composition, were unable to adjust their lower content of chlorophyll, their smaller total carotenoid pool size or their lower photosynthetic performance. Moreover, while the chilling-tolerant genotypes converted the most part of zeaxanthin to violaxanthin in the xanthophyll cycle, the chilling-sensitive genotypes retained high amounts of zeaxanthin. The changes in pigment composition that occurred over the 3 d at 24/22 °C were largely conserved when the plants were returned to 14/12 °C, but photosynthetic activity decreased and zeaxanthin accumulated again. The results suggest that the capability of the chilling-tolerant genotypes, when compared with the sensitive ones, to retain high amounts of pigments and to form a competent photosynthetic apparatus at low temperature is the basis for their more vigorous growth in cool climates.  相似文献

We studied carotenoid composition and chlorophyll fluorescence in two-year-old needles from Siberian spruce (Picea obovata (L.) Karst.), Siberian fir (Abies sibirica L.), and common juniper (Juniperus communis L.). The highest values of maximum PSII photochemical activity (F v/F m) equaling 0.82–0.85 were observed in July–September. The decrease in F v/F m in December–March was more pronounced in juniper (down to 0.15) than in spruce and fir (0.45–0.50). In May, we observed a nearly complete recovery in maximum PSII photochemical activity in fir and spruce (0.72–0.77), while in juniper, the F v/F m value was notably lower (0.65–0.67). The amount of thermal dissipation of energy absorbed by PSII LHC did not exceed 30% in summer and equaled 60–90% in winter and early spring. The carotenoid pool consisted mainly of xanthophylls, among which lutein (70%), neoxanthin (7–10%), and a violaxanthin cycle (VXC) component — violaxanthin (3–15%) were constantly present. The accumulation of two other VXC pigments—zeaxanthin and antheraxanthin, was noted in December–March. In July, these xanthophylls were not identified. We discovered a direct connection between VXC pigment de-epoxidation level and light energy thermal dissipation in boreal conifer leaves. Such association reflects the non-species-specific character of the mechanism for quenching zeaxanthin-dependent nonphotochemical chlorophyll fluorescence in PSII LHC in winter and spring.

Adaptogenic effect of furostanol glycosides (FG) on biosynthesis of photosynthetic pigments in tomato plants (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) were studied under conditions of biotic stress caused by root-knot nematode (Meloidogyne incognita Kofoid et White). Treatment of plants with 5 x 10(-4) M FG was accompanied by an increase in the rate of biosynthesis of pigments (particularly, chlorophyll b and carotenoids), which was observed against the background of a decrease in the relative contribution of beta-carotene and an increase in the relative contribution of pigments of violaxanthin cycle (VXC) to the overall pool of carotenoids. It was suggested that FG stimulated phytoimmunity by shifting metabolism of carotenoids toward enhanced biosynthesis of VXC pigments. These pigments play a protective role and facilitate stabilization of photosynthetic apparatus, which is particularly important under stress conditions.  相似文献

Comparative study was performed to assess the content and proportions of photosynthetic pigments and the violaxanthin cycle (VXC) activity in winter-green and summer-green leaves of bugleweed (Ajuga reptans L.) plants grown in shaded (photosynthetically active radiation, PAR 150 μmol/(m2 s)) and sunny (PAR 1200 μmol/(m2 s)) habitats in the Botanic Garden of Jagiellonian University (Krakow, Poland). In overwintered and newly formed leaves of shade plants, the content of green and yellow pigments was two times higher than in leaves of sun plants. The shade plants were distinguished by accumulation of β-carotene, while lutein was predominant in leaves of sun plants. Under the action of strong light (2000 μmol/(m2s)), the level of violaxanthin deepoxidation in winter-green leaves of shade and sun plants increased five- to sixfold, whereas it changed insignificantly in summer-green leaves of shade plants. It is concluded that, in a shadetolerant species A. reptans, the photosynthetic apparatus of winter-green leaves in sun and shade plants and of summer-green leaves in sun plants is protected against excess insolation by high activity of VXC. The carotenoids of summer-green leaves in shade plants are supposed to function mainly as light-harvesting pigments.  相似文献
