Sediment fluxes were studied in the subtropical Lake Kinneret (Israel) in 2006, 2007, and 2008 from mid-June to October, when lake was chemically stratified and the green sulfur bacterium Chlorobium phaeobacteroides formed a dense population in the anoxic metalimnion. The rate of seston accumulation in traps was measured with sedimentation traps positioned along an offshore transect connecting the littoral zone and lake center. The sediment fluxes increased from the lake center towards the littoral, while the percentage of organic material (OM) decreased correspondingly. High fluxes of bacteriochlorophyll e (BChl e—a signature pigment of Chl. phaeobacteroides) and chlorophyll a (Chl a—a marker for eukaryotic algae and cyanobacteria) were detected in all locations. The relative contributions of Chl a and BChl e to the bulk of the accumulated OM were higher in traps positioned below the thermocline in the pelagic zone than in traps located near the shore line. The presence of BChl e in traps exposed to oxic conditions in the littoral, where Chl. phaeobacteroides does not develop, implies horizontal translocation of cells from the lake center towards its periphery. We assume that seiche-mediated movement of particles embedded in the metalimnetic waters is the most probable explanation for the existence of Chl. phaeobacteroides tracer in an oxic environment, but do not exclude the possibility of resuspension of settled particles as source for BChl e in littoral traps. The green sulfur bacteria are potentially important component of the sediment flux of photosynthesizing organisms in a thermally stratified lake and should be taken into account when carbon budget are constructed.  相似文献

How are microphytobenthic biofilms adapted to the high incident irradiances and temperatures, low inorganic nutrient concentrations and high desiccation stresses on intertidal flats present in tropical environments? This study investigated biofilms subject to different environmental conditions in a range of tropical sites in Suva lagoon, Fiji. PAM fluorescence was used to measure photophysiological responses to the light climate. Biofilm colloidal carbohydrate, extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and low molecular weight (MW) carbohydrate concentrations and diel carbohydrate production patterns were measured. Average biomass (Chl a) ranged from 15 to 36?mg?m?2, and was highest in seagrass bed sediments, but biomass was not correlated with water column or sediment porewater nutrient concentrations. Biofilm photophysiology differed significantly along a combined gradient of light and nutrient availability, with F v/F m, relative ETRmax and E k of biofilms highest in mangrove and intertidal main island sites and lowest in subtidal coral reef flats. Subtidal biofilms showed photoinhibition at irradiances > 1000?µmol?m?2. Significant correlations between Chl a and colloidal carbohydrate concentrations were present (except on intertidal sandflats), and tropical biofilms had higher ratios of colloidal carbohydrate and EPS to Chl a than temperate estuarine biofilms, probably due to a combination of high irradiance and low nutrient availability leading to the production of excess photoassimilates. The percentage of EPS present in the colloidal fraction was highest in coral sand biofilms (42%), which had the lowest nutrient concentrations, compared with other sites (25–32%). Intertidal biofilms predominantly consisted of large motile taxa and showed strong rhythms of vertical migration. During tidal emersion, high sediment temperatures (41?°C), irradiance (>2300?µmol?m?2?s?1) and salinity (49‰) stimulated downward migration. In silty sediments, migration resulted in a reduction in photosynthetic activity during the midday period but, in sands with high light penetration (to a depth of > 1700?µm), high production rates of EPS (18.2?µg carbo. µg Chl a?1 h?1) and low MW carbohydrate exudates (40.2?µg carbo. µg Chl a?1 h?1) occurred. Vertical migration, high E k and high rates of photoassimilate dumping are all adaptations to living in the tropical intertidal zone. Seagrass and reef flat biofilms consisted of a diverse non-migratory flora of motile and non-motile taxa that were not subject to such extreme temperature and irradiance conditions. Low values of photosynthetic parameters and high colloidal and EPS content indicated that these biofilms were nutrient-limited.  相似文献

1. Chlorophyll a (Chl a) distribution across a 0.36 km2 restored floodplain (Cosumnes River, California) was analysed throughout the winter and spring flood season from January to June 2005. In addition, high temporal‐resolution Chl a measurements were made in situ with field fluorometers in the floodplain and adjacent channel. 2. The primary objectives were to characterise suspended algal biomass distribution across the floodplain at various degrees of connection with the channel and to correlate Chl a concentration and distribution with physical and chemical gradients across the floodplain. 3. Our analysis indicates that periodic connection and disconnection of the floodplain with the channel is vital to the functioning of the floodplain as a source of concentrated suspended algal biomass for downstream aquatic ecosystems. 4. Peak Chl a levels on the floodplain occurred during disconnection, reaching levels as high as 25 μg L?1. Chl a distribution across the floodplain was controlled by residence time and local physical/biological conditions, the latter of which were primarily a function of water depth. 5. During connection, the primary pond on the floodplain exhibited low Chl a (mean = 3.4 μg L?1) and the shallow littoral zones had elevated concentrations (mean = 4.6 μg L?1); during disconnection, shallow zone Chl a increased (mean = 12.4 μg L?1), but the pond experienced the greatest algal growth (mean = 14.7 μg L?1). 6. Storm‐induced floodwaters entering the floodplain not only displaced antecedent floodplain waters, but also redistributed floodplain resources, creating complex mixing dynamics between parcels of water with distinct chemistries. Incomplete replacement of antecedent floodplain waters led to localised hypoxia in non‐flushed areas. 7. The degree of complexity revealed in this analysis makes clear the need for high‐resolution spatial and temporal studies such as this to begin to understand the functioning of dynamic and heterogeneous floodplain ecosystems.  相似文献

1. Previous studies of mixotrophy in the flagellate Poterioochromonas malhamensis (Chrysophyceae) were performed on strains that had been in culture for > 30 years. This study aims to compare mixotrophy in a cultured strain with one recently isolated from a mesotrophic lake (Lacawac) in Pennsylvania, U.S.A. 2. P. malhamensis from the lake exhibited a nutritional flexibility similar to that of the culture strain, growing phototrophically but inefficiently in comparison to other nutritional modes (growth rate (μ) = 0.015 h?1). Supplementing an inorganic salts medium with 1 mM glucose resulted in a doubling of μ to 0.035 h?1 and 0.033 h?1 in the light and the dark, respectively. Addition of an algal prey, Nannochloris, to the inorganic salts medium increased growth to rates similar to those observed with glucose. Maximum growth of the lake strain, 0.095 h?1, was achieved when bacteria was supplied as food. During growth on bacteria, cellular chlorophyll a (Chl a) decreased from 140 fg cell?1 to 10 fg cell?1 over 22 h when cultured either in the light or dark. In illuminated cultures, cell-specific Chl a concentration recovered to 185 fg cell?1 after bacteria became limiting. 3. In contrast to the cultured strain, however, the lake isolate exhibited an inverse relationship between light intensity and ingestion rate. Calculated grazing rates, based upon the ingestion of fluorescently labeled bacteria, were 3.2, 5.2 and 9.4 bacteria flagellate?1 h?1, for P. malhamensis incubated in high light, low light and darkness, respectively. Phagotrophy is thus influenced by a light regime in this predominately heterotrophic mixotroph.  相似文献

Periphyton (epilithon) gross primary production (GPP) was estimated using the DCMU-fluorescence method in the Yenisei River. In the unshaded littoral zone, chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) and GPP value varied from 0.83 to 973.74 mg m−2and 2–304,425 O2 m−2 day−1 (0.64–95 133 mg C m−2 day−1), respectively. Positive significant correlation (r = 0.8) between daily GPP and periphyton Chl a was found. Average ratio GPP:Chl a for periphyton was 36.36 mg C mg Chl a m−2 day−1. The obtained GPP values for the Yenisei River have a high significant correlation with values predicted by a conventional empirical model for stream periphyton. We concluded that the DCMU-fluorescence method can be successfully used for measuring of gross primary production of stream phytoperiphyton at least as another useful tool for such studies.  相似文献

Laminated sediment is deposited in the deep areas (> 30 m) of Lake Pääjärvi. In the diatom microstratigraphy a regular alteration of planktonic and littoral floras, which goes in pace with the visual structure, reflects the yearly cycle of sedimentation. Considerable variation in sedimentation was found to have occurred during the past two decades. A sequence, dated to the early 1960's, in which the organic content was exceptionally high, could be identified in the sediment at 6–14 cm depth even in shallower areas where laminations are not formed. This level was used as a marker horizon when determining the recent distribution of sediment by means of 19 cores taken from different parts of the lake. The average annual sediment accumulation in the profundal zone of the lake is 340 g m?2a?1 dry weight, of which 25 g m?2 a?1 (1100 kJ m?2 a?1) is organic carbon.  相似文献

The effect of light intensity (PAR) on the nitrogenase activity of Mastigocladus laminosus Cohn was studied by the acetylene reduction technique. Benthic mat from a thermal stream, Hot River, in Yellowstone National Park was used in both experimental and in situ incubations. This hot spring maintained a mean pH of 7.0, was essentially isothermal (ca. 50°C), and had virtually no upstream to downstream physicochemical gradients (P > 0.05). Two surveys of the stream showed that nitrogenase of the M. laminosus mat was significantly more active (P > 0.02) under low light intensities than under high intensities, 252 and 712 μE · m?2· s?1, respectively. Maximum activity of Hot River Mastigocladus (268 nmol C2H4· mg Chl a?1· h?1) occurred at 50% full midday light intensities; the rates at low light (mean = 247 nmol C2H4· mg Chl a?1· h?1) were significantly (P > 0.001) greater than those at high light (mean = 106). The results indicate that M. laminosus nitrogenase activity is low light adapted and suggest that the temporal pattern for nitrogen fixation might be significantly different from that of thermophilic Calothrix.  相似文献

The combined effects of light intensity and nitrogen (NO3?) on growth rate, pigment content, and biochemical composition of Gracilaria foliifera v. angustissima (Harvey) Taylor was investigated using outdoor continuous cultures. Growth of Gracilaria increased linearly with increasing light to 0.43 doublings d?1 at high light levels (383 ly d?1 of in situ light), suggesting that light may often limit growth of this plant in nature. Chlorophyll a and phycoerythrin contents were inversely proportional to light level and growth rate. However, pigment content did not affect the growth capacity of Gracilaria. There was no increase in growth or pigment content with increasing additions of nitrogen. The low nitrogen treatment was unenriched seawater that had higher NO3? levels than most coastal waters (influent = 8.61 μM; residual = 0.94 μM). When growing near its maximum rate under high light intensities, Gracilaria had a significantly (P < 0.001) lower phycoerythrin: chlorophyll a ratio (phyco: Chl a) than did Gracilaria growing more slowly under lower light (Phyco:Chl a of 2.8 ± 0.2 vs. 3.8 ± 0.3). Faster growing plants also had C:N ratios above 10, indicating N- limitation. In addition to harvesting light the phycobiliproteins of Gracilaria may store nitrogen. Growth rates of Gracilaria correlated negatively with ash (r =–0.85) and positively with the carbon: phycoerythrin ratio (r = 0.85), suggesting that these two indices can be used to estimate growth in the field.  相似文献

Ozone treatment affects pigment precursor metabolism in pine seedlings   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Five‐week‐old seedlings of Pinus halepensis Mill. and Pinus brutia Ten. were exposed to air polluted with ozone (O3) (250 nl l?1, 12 h day?1 for 4 days) or to ambient air containing ca 10–20 nl l?1 O3, in the light (180 μmol m?2 s?1 photosynthetic photon flux density [PPFD], 12 h day?1) and then fed for 24 h in the light (100 μmol m?2 s?1 PPFD) with various radioactive precursors of chlorophyll (Chl) and carotene biosynthesis: 5‐[4‐14C]‐aminolevulinic acid (14C‐ALA), l ‐[14C(U)]‐glutamic acid (14C‐Glu), or d ,l ‐[2‐14C]‐mevalonic acid (14C‐MVA). Pigments were then extracted from cotyledons and fully expanded needles. Chl a and carotene were separated by thin‐layer chromatography and high‐performance liquid chromatography and their specific activities were determined. 14C‐ALA and 14C‐Glu labels were incorporated into Chl a and carotene. Exposure to O3 did not inhibit incorporation of 14C‐ALA into Chl a molecules, but hydrolysis of Chl a showed that O3 inhibited phytol labelling of Chl a. Labelling of carotene was also inhibited by O3, but not when 14C‐MVA was used as the label. These data suggest that O3 treatment inhibits (directly or indirectly) the biosynthesis of isoprenoids from products of ALA and Glu metabolism in the plastid, but not from MVA in the cytosol. This inhibition was more prominent when 14C‐ALA was used as the label than when 14C‐Glu was the labelling precursor. A significant increase in pheophorbide a, a tetrapyrrole component of Chl a labelling, and a concomitant decrease in phytol labelling was observed following incubation of O3‐treated pine seedlings with 14C‐ALA and 14C‐Glu. Stronger inhibition of carotene biosynthesis and activation of Chl a tetrapyrrole labelling by 14C‐ALA (in comparison with 14C‐Glu) indicated that exposure to O3 inhibits the conversion of ALA to Glu as the first step in ALA catabolism. These results also suggested a more intensive Glu metabolism (in comparison with ALA) for carotene biosynthesis in the cytosol, as well as cooperation between two pathways of isopentenyl diphosphate biosynthesis.  相似文献

Vertical distribution of phytoplankton and the formation of deep chlorophyll maximum (DCM) in the metalimnion of a small stratified and partly meromictic temperate lake was studied in 1999 and 2000. During summer DCM usually occurred on the borderline of H2S and oxygen-containing waters. At the depths where the bacteriochlorophyll (Bchl) maxima were observed, the sulphide concentration was usually relatively low compared to the bottom layers, where its concentration reached as high as possible saturation level. In April 2000, DCM was formed at the depth of 3.5 m, and lowered thereafter slowly to 6.5 m by October. The concentration of Bchl d reached the highest values (over 1000 μg l−1) just before the water column was mixed up in autumn. In December and April Bchl d was detectable only near the bottom of the lake. The concentration of chlorophyll a yielded by the spectrophotometric phaeopigment corrected method and by HPLC (high pressure liquid chromatography), fit rather well in the upper layers. In deeper water layers chlorophyll a concentration (Chl a) measured by spectrophotometry was overestimated about 47 times if compared to HPLC values because of the high Bchl d in that layer. In most cases vertical profiles of primary production (PP) did not coincide with the vertical distribution of the pigment content; the maximum values of PP were found in the epilimnion. In some cases PP had notably high values also at the depth of DCM. In the upper layers Chl a usually did not exceeded 20 μg l−1 in spring and 10 μg l−1 in summer. The moderately high Chl a in the epilimnion in spring was significantly reduced after the formation of thermocline most probably because of the establishment of the nutrient limitation in epilimnion. Decreasing Chl a concentration in the epilimnion led to increased water transparency and better light conditions for photosynthetic bacteria in metalimnion.  相似文献

The benthic macroinvertebrate community (BMI) in a freshwater coastal dune lake without a surface outlet was investigated in May and October, 1986. Fifty-three invertebrate taxa were identified from Carter Lake, including three euryhaline crustacean species (Corophium spinicorne, Gnorimosphaeroma oregonensis lutea, and Acanthomysis awatchensis). Corophium spinicorne dominated the BMI communities of the littoral zones and sphaeriid clams dominated the deepwater community. The lake level dropped about 2.5 m between April and October. Based upon this decline, the lake bottom was divided into four major habitats: a sandy temporarily submerged littoral zone (A); a sandy submerged littoral zone (B); and mid-depth zone of mixed mud and sand and the macrophyte, Nitella (C); and a deep zone (D) with soft mud. The average density of BMI was highest in the littoral zones (A and B) in May and in zone B in October (zone A was dry). The lowest density occurred in zone D. In May, BMI biomass was highest in the littoral zones, but the biomass was highest in the mid-depth zone in October. The mid-depth zone in October. The mid-depth zone had the most diverse community. The two most abundant species in the temporarily submerged area, Corophium spinicorne and Juga plicifera, were found in greater numbers deeper in the lake after the water level dropped, suggesting migration by these species in response to changing water levels.  相似文献

Big Soda Lake is an alkaline, saline lake with a permanent chemocline at 34.5 m and a mixolimnion that undergoes seasonal changes in temperature structure. During the period of thermal stratification, from summer through fall, the epilimnion has low concentrations of dissolved inorganic nutrients (N, Si) and CH4, and low biomass of phytoplankton (chlorophyll a ca. 1 mgm -3). Dissolved oxygen disappears near the compensation depth for algal photosynthesis (ca. 20 m). Surface water is transparent so that light is present in the anoxic hypolimnion, and a dense plate of purple sulfur photosynthetic bacteria (Ectothiorhodospira vacuolata) is present just below 20 m (Bchl a ca. 200 mgm-3). Concentrations of N H4 +, Si, and CH4 are higher in the hypolimnion than in the epilimnion. As the mixolimnion becomes isothermal in winter, oxygen is mixed down to 28 m. Nutrients (NH4 +, Si) and CH4 are released from the hypolimnion and mix to the surface, and a diatom bloom develops in the upper 20 m (chlorophyll a > 40 mgm-3). The deeper mixing of oxygen and enhanced light attenuation by phytoplankton uncouple the anoxic zone and photic zone, and the plate of photosynthetic bacteria disappears (Bchl a ca.10mgm-3). Hence, seasonal changes in temperature distribution and mixing create conditions such that the primary producer community is alternately dominated by phytoplankton and photosynthetic bacteria: the phytoplankton may be nutrient-limited during periods of stratification and the photosynthetic bacteria are light-limited during periods of mixing.  相似文献

Cooking Lake (113°02′W, 53°26′N), a well-mixed, shallow (mean depth (1.59 m), eutrophic lake in Alberta, Canada, is characterized by eutrophic chlorococcalean and cyanophycean phytoplankton associations, and little change in standing crop with increasing depth. Standing crop and primary productivity are low during the winter but pronounced spring and summer maxima occur. Mean yearly areal standing crop (ΔB) and primary productivity (ΔA) were 212.4 mg m?2 chlorophyll a and 301.8 mg C h?1 m?2 respectively. Annual productivity was estimated at 1322 g C m?2. The mean increase in the extinction coefficient (?) per unit increase in standing crop (B) was 0.03 In units m?1. High non-algal light attenuation (?q) occurred avenging 41 which prevented the ratio B/? from attaining more than 65% of the theoretical maximum except once when algal self-shading occurred. Close correlations existed between B (mg m?3 chlorophyll a) and A max (mg h?1 m?3) ΔA and ΔB, ΔA and B, Amax, and Amax/?, and ΔA and Io′, (W m?2). The depth of the euphotic zone (Zeu) varied between 0.5 and 1 25 m; the average relationship between zeu and E was Zeu= 3.74/?, and the mean standing Crop found in the euphotic zone represented 55.2% of the theoretical maximum, The high ?q, values made the model of Tailing (1957) inapplicable to Cooking Lake. The Q10 value for the lake was 2.2. The maximum rate of photosynthesis per unit of population per h. Ømax, (mg C sag chlorophyll a?1 h?1) was more closely related to temperature than irradiance and ma depressed by pH values greater than 9.1. Growth of the phytoplankton was not nutrient limited: instead irradiance and temperature were more important. Indirect evidence that free CO2 limited photosynthetic rates, is provided by the Ømax: pH relationship.  相似文献

This study explores adaptive strategies of epiphytic bryophytes in the understorey by investigating the photosynthetic characteristics, pigment concentrations and nutrient stoichiometry, as well as other functional traits of three trunk-dwelling bryophytes in a subtropical montane cloud forest in SW China. The results showed that their light-saturated net photosynthetic rate (Anmax?L), light saturation point (Isat), light compensation point (Ic) and dark respiration rate (Rd) were ca 0.55, 106.72, 4.17 and 0.25?μmol?m?2?s?1, respectively. Furthermore, the samples demonstrated photosynthetic down-regulation under high irradiance. These photosynthetic characteristics can be explained by higher total chlorophyll concentrations, specific leaf area, chlorophyll per unit leaf N (Chl/N), lower ratio of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b (Chl a/b) and photosynthetic nitrogen-use efficiency. We suggest that the bryophytes adapted to the shaded understorey microhabitats through a series of correlations and trade-offs between functional traits.  相似文献

Relationships between growth, nitrogen and concentration of unique biont components were investigated for the tripartite lichens Nephroma arcticum (L.) Torss. and Peltigera aphthosa (L.) Willd. Nitrogen availability was manipulated during 4 summer months by removing cephalodia and their associated N2 fixation activity, or by weekly irrigation with NH4NO3. Chlorophyll and ribulose 1·5‐biphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco), and chitin and ergosterol were used as photobiont and mycobiont markers, respectively. Nitrogen concentrations were similar in older and newer parts of the same thallus, varying between 2 and 5 g m?2, with P. aphthosa having higher concentrations than N. arcticum. Both chlorophyll (Chl a) and chitin were linearly correlated with thallus N, but N. arcticum invested more in fungal biomass and had lower Chl a concentrations in comparison with P. aphthosa at equal thallus N. During the 4 months, control and N‐fertilized thalli of N. arcticum increased in area by 0·2 m2 m?2 and P. aphthosa by 0·4 m2 m?2. Thallus expansion was significantly inhibited in samples without cephalodia, but there was no effect on lichen weight gain. Mean relative growth rate (RGR; mg g?1 d?1) was 3·8 for N. arcticum and 8·4 for P. aphthosa, when time (d) reflected the lichen wet periods. RGR was 2–3 times lower when based on the whole time, i.e. when including dry periods. The efficiency (e) of converting incident irradiance into lichen biomass was positively and linearly correlated with thallus Chl a concentration to the same extent in both species. The slower growth rates of N. arcticum, in comparison with P. aphthosa, could then be explained by their lower nitrogen and Chl a concentrations and a subsequently lower light energy conversion efficiency. Functional and dynamic aspects of resource allocation patterns of the two lichens are discussed in relation to the above findings.  相似文献

1. Epilimnetic alkaline phosphatase activity (APA) was measured in longitudinal profiles of the canyon‐shaped, eutrophic Sau Reservoir (Catalonia, Spain) during the autumn, winter and spring periods of 1997–2000. 2. The spatial pattern of APA depended on lake circulation. During periods of stable stratification, when the ratio of mixed to euphotic depth (zmix/zeu < 1.7) was low and the Chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration high, APA was also comparatively high (0.5–3.4 μmol L?1 h?1) and located mostly in the >2‐μm size‐fraction. APA increased towards the dam at the same time as the concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) decreased. In periods of unstable stratification, deep mixing (zmix/zeu > 2.4) and low Chl a concentration, APA was low (<0.1 μmol L?1 h?1) and without longitudinal changes, consistent with a high and stable SRP concentration. 3. A high input of mostly dissolved (in the <0.2‐μm size‐fraction) phosphatases from the river Ter was found in 1997–98. At the river inflow, independently of season and despite a continuously high SRP concentration, APA was approximately 0.7 μmol L?1 h?1 and decreased towards the dam within the inflowing, canyon‐like part of the reservoir. 4. Analysis of saturation kinetics revealed the kinetic heterogeneity of APA. Low‐affinity APA was localised in the >2‐μm (algal) size‐fraction while, in the <2‐μm (picoplankton, mainly bacteria + dissolved) size‐fraction, high‐affinity APA, or a mixture of both, was found. The presence of two kinetic components, whose substrate affinities (i.e. in Michaelis constants, Km) differed, was confirmed statistically in 13 of 18 cases analysed. The range of KmH values of the high‐affinity component was 0.15–2.4 μmol L?1, KmL values of the low‐affinity component ranged from 18 to 275 μmol L?1.  相似文献

1. Pigment composition was measured in natural phytoplankton samples from Lake Kinneret, Israel. From March through June 1998, the dinoflagellate Peridinium gatunense Nygaard mostly contributed more than 95% of the algal biomass. Peak densities were found in April, close to the water surface, with >109 cells m?3, chlorophyll (Chl) a concentration of 380 mg m?3 and areal Chl‐a density of >1300 mg m?2. 2. Cellular concentrations of Chl‐a changed between 201 and 282 pg cell?1, but did not show a defined temporal fluctuation. 3. The mass ratio of Chl‐c to Chl‐a changed from March to June between 0.16 and 0.22, and the peridinin to Chl‐a ratio changed from 0.25 to 0.41. Neither ratio showed a clear pattern of seasonal change. Conversely, there was a progressive increase in diadinoxanthin and β‐carotene ratios to Chl‐a through the season, parallel to the increase in photon flux impinging upon the lake surface. The diadinoxanthin to Chl‐a ratio changed from 0.11 to 0.28 and the β‐carotene to Chl‐a ratio varied from 0.03 to 0.08 from March through June. 4. Diatoxanthin was not detected in natural samples. However, it was present in experiments with P. gatunense cultures, when concentration of diatoxanthin increased rapidly, concurrent with a decrease in diadinoxanthin and β‐carotene concentrations, while Chl‐c and peridinin ratios to Chl‐a were almost stable with photon flux increase. 5. The seasonal variation in cellular pigmentation of P. gatunense in Lake Kinneret suggests that accumulation of photoprotective pigments is essential for optimisation of photosynthetic activity of this large dinoflagellate.  相似文献

A silicon budget for an Alaskan arctic lake   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
The cycling of dissolved reactive silicate (DRS) and sedimentary biogenic SiO2 has been examined in ultraoligotrophic Toolik Lake, Alaska. Watershed output of DRS (∼ 7 mmol m − 2 yr −1) is similar to other arctic study sites, but a short water residence time results in the poor retention of DRS (∼17%) within the lake. Biogenic SiO2 concentrations in surficial sediments average 123 mg g−1 with the highest concentrations arising from the production of benthic diatoms in the littoral zone. Lake water DRS concentrations are highest prior to spring flow and photic zone concentrations exceed 23 μmol 1−1 at the time of greatest primary production. Wintertime increases in watercolumn DRS concentrations and spring and summer pore water DRS flux estimates indicate that internal cycling within the lake may supply an amount of DRS equivalent to that which biologically utilized.  相似文献

1. Temperature and many other physical and chemical factors affecting CO2 production in lake sediments vary significantly both seasonally and spatially. The effects of temperature and sediment properties on benthic CO2 production were studied in in situ and in vitro experiments in the boreal oligotrophic Lake Pääjärvi, southern Finland. 2. In in situ experiments, temperature of the water overlying the shallow littoral sediment varied seasonally between 0.5 and 15.7 °C, but in deep water (≥20 m) the range was only 1.1–6.6 °C. The same exponential model (r2 = 0.70) described the temperature dependence at 1.2, 10 and 20 m depths. At 2.5 and 5 m depths, however, the slopes of the two regression models (r2 = 0.94) were identical but the intercept values were different. Sediment properties (wet, dry, mineral and organic mass) varied seasonally and with depth, but they did not explain a significantly larger proportion of variation in the CO2 output rate than temperature. 3. In in vitro experiments, there was a clear and uniform exponential dependence of CO2 production on temperature, with a 2.7‐fold increase per 10 °C temperature rise. The temperature response (slope of regression) was always the same, but the basic value of CO2 production (intercept) varied, indicating that other factors also contributed to the benthic CO2 output rate. 4. The annual CO2 production of the sediment in Lake Pääjärvi averaged 62 g CO2 m?2, the shallow littoral at 0–3 m depth releasing 114 g CO2 m?2 and deep profundal (>15 m) 30 g CO2 m?2. On the whole lake basis, the shallow littoral at 0–3 m depth accounted for 53% and the sediment area in contact with the summer epilimnion (down to a depth c. 10 m) 75% of the estimated total annual CO2 output of the lake sediment, respectively. Of the annual production, 83% was released during the spring and summer. 5. Using the temperature‐CO2 production equations and climate change scenarios we estimated that climatic warming might increase littoral benthic CO2 production in summer by nearly 30% from the period 1961–90 to the period 2071–2100.  相似文献
