The qualitative influence of patchy stomatal conductance distributions on the values of photosynthesis (A) and intercellular CO2 concentration (ci) as determined by gas-exchange measurements were investigated using computer modelling. Gas-exchange measurements were simulated for different conductance distributions by modelling photosynthesis explicitly for each patch, summing these rates, and inferring ci from a diffusion equation. Qualitative relationships are presented between conductance distribution features and the difference between assimilation rates measured for patchy and homogeneous leaves at the same ci (Ap and Ah, respectively). These data show that, although most conductance distributions have little effect on the value of A measured for a given ci, some distribution features (which we have termed ‘bimodality’, ‘position’, ‘skewness’ and ‘range’) play a key role in controlling the magnitude of these effects. Distributions that are more nearly bimodal, span regions of lower conductance, are right-skewed, or have broader conductance ranges are associated with larger effects on the A(ci) relationship. To clarify our mathematical analysis and illustrate some of the trends it predicts, we present conductance distributions and gas-exchange data from leaves of Malus dolgo var. Spring Snow Dial were treated with ABA. The results are discussed in the light of recent controversy over the effect of patchy stomatal conductance on gas-exchange data.  相似文献

Images of chlorophyll fluorescence were used to demonstrate patchy stomatal closure at low humidities in leaves of well-watered Xanthium strumarium plants. The pattern and extent of patchy stomatal closure were shown to be different for the two surfaces of amphistomatous leaves by taking images of leaves with CO2 available to only one leaf was exposed to low humidity, patchiness was more extensive on that surface. Gas-exchange experiments were also conducted to determine the apparent photosynthetic capacity of the mesophyll (photosynthesis rate at constant ci when it was supplied with CO2 through both surfaces or through each surface alone. These experiments showed declines in the apparent photosynthetic capacity of the mesophyll at low humidities that were consistent with patchy stomatal closure on one or both surfaces. The results suggest that patchy stomatal closure can be a factor in the steady-state reponses of stomata to humidity. In amphistomatous leaves this is further complicated by the fact that patches on one epidermis may not coincide with those of the other surface.  相似文献

Abstract Two-year-old seedlings of Picea rubens, growing in open-top chambers in Scotland were treated twice weekly from July 1987 to December 1987, with mist containing ammonium sulphate and nitric acid at a pH of either 2.5 or 5.0. The response of photosynthesis and stomatal conductance to light flux density and carbon dioxide concentration were measured in March 1989. Leaf chlorophyll a and b contents were also measured. Acid mist (pH 2.5) resulted in several significant changes. First, both the rate of light saturated photosynthesis (Amax) and CO2- saturated rate of photosynthesis (J) were substantially increased, when expressed per unit leaf area. Second, the apparent quantum yield and chlorophylls a and b content increased. Third, as a consequence of the greater chlorophyll content of the leaves treated with acid mist, the rate of Amax, and J, expressed per unit chlorophyll, was substantially reduced in pH 2.5 treated branches. Stomatal conductance was enhanced at all but the highest light flux densities, and was independent of the CO2 concentration, remaining high for all values of CO2 concentration used. These results show that acid mist caused a number of responses in the gas exchange and photosynthetic properties of red spruce.  相似文献

A spatially explicit model of patchy stomatal responses to humidity   总被引:8,自引:3,他引:5
Stomata of leaves can exhibit either temporally stable, spatially homogeneous behaviour or complex spatial and temporal dynamics, depending on environmental and physiological conditions. To test the ability of accepted physiological mechanisms to describe these patterns, we developed a simple, spatially explicit model of stomatal responses to humidity that incorporated hydraulic interactions among stomata. Model results showed qualitative agreement with experimental evidence for a number of phenomena: (1) at high humidities, whole-leaf steady-state conductance is a monotonic function of humidity; (2) the initial stomatal response following a perturbation in humidity is in the direction opposite to the final response, and (3) spatial dynamics include patch formation and self-organization similar to that observed in actual leaves. These comparisons do not eliminate other explanations, but do suggest that novel mechanisms need not be invoked to explain the diversity of spatial and temporal patterns of stomatal behaviour in leaves.  相似文献

A hydromechanical and biochemical model of stomatal conductance   总被引:16,自引:1,他引:16
A mathematical model of stomatal conductance is presented. It is based on whole‐plant and epidermal hydromechanics, and on two hypotheses: (1) the osmotic gradient across guard cell membranes is proportional to the concentration of ATP in the guard cells; and (2) the osmotic gradient that can be sustained per unit of ATP is proportional to the turgor pressure of adjacent epidermal cells. In the present study, guard cell [ATP] is calculated using a previously published model that is based on a widely used biochemical model of C3 mesophyll photosynthesis. The conductance model for Vicia faba L. is parameterized and tested As with most other stomatal models, the present model correctly predicts the stomatal responses to variations in transpiration rate, irradiance and intercellular CO2. Unlike most other models, however, this model can predict the transient stomatal opening often observed before conductance declines in response to decreases in humidity, soil water potential, or xylem conductance. The model also explicitly accommodates the mechanical advantage of the epidermis and correctly predicts that stomata are relatively insensitive to the ambient partial pressure of oxygen, as a result of the assumed dependence on ATP concentration.  相似文献

Fluorescence and thermal imaging were used to examine the dynamics of stomatal patches for a single surface of Xanthium strumarium L. leaves following a decrease in ambient humidity. Patches were not observed in all experiments, and in many experiments the patches were short-lived. In some experiments, however, patches persisted for many hours and showed complex temporal and spatial patterns. Rapidly sampled fluorescence images showed that the measurable variations of these patches were sufficiently slow to be captured by fluorescence images taken at 3-min intervals using a saturating flash of light. Stomatal patchiness with saturating flashes of light was not demonstrably different from that without saturating flashes of light, suggesting that the regular flashes of light did not directly cause the phenomenon. Comparison of simultaneous fluorescence and thermal images showed that the fluorescence patterns were largely the result of stomatal conductance patterns, and both thermal and fluorescence images showed patches of stomatal conductance that propagated coherently across the leaf surface. These nondispersing patches often crossed a given region of the leaf repeatedly at regular intervals, resulting in oscillations in stomatal conductance for that region. The existence of these coherently propagating structures has implications for the mechanisms that cause patchy stomatal behaviour as well as for the physiological ramifications of this phenomenon.  相似文献

Stomatal conductance (gs) and mesophyll conductance (gm) represent major constraints to photosynthetic rate (A), and these traits are expected to coordinate with leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf) across species, under both steady‐state and dynamic conditions. However, empirical information about their coordination is scarce. In this study, Kleaf, gas exchange, stomatal kinetics, and leaf anatomy in 10 species including ferns, gymnosperms, and angiosperms were investigated to elucidate the correlation of H2O and CO2 diffusion inside leaves under varying light conditions. Gas exchange, Kleaf, and anatomical traits varied widely across species. Under light‐saturated conditions, the A, gs, gm, and Kleaf were strongly correlated across species. However, the response patterns of A, gs, gm, and Kleaf to varying light intensities were highly species dependent. Moreover, stomatal opening upon light exposure of dark‐adapted leaves in the studied ferns and gymnosperms was generally faster than in the angiosperms; however, stomatal closing in light‐adapted leaves after darkening was faster in angiosperms. The present results show that there is a large variability in the coordination of leaf hydraulic and gas exchange parameters across terrestrial plant species, as well as in their responses to changing light.  相似文献

A coupled model of stomatal conductance, photosynthesis and transpiration   总被引:17,自引:1,他引:17
A model that couples stomatal conductance, photosynthesis, leaf energy balance and transport of water through the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum is presented. Stomatal conductance in the model depends on light, temperature and intercellular CO2 concentration via photosynthesis and on leaf water potential, which in turn is a function of soil water potential, the rate of water flow through the soil and plant, and on xylem hydraulic resistance. Water transport from soil to roots is simulated through solution of Richards’ equation. The model captures the observed hysteresis in diurnal variations in stomatal conductance, assimilation rate and transpiration for plant canopies. Hysteresis arises because atmospheric demand for water from the leaves typically peaks in mid‐afternoon and because of uneven distribution of soil matric potentials with distance from the roots. Potentials at the root surfaces are lower than in the bulk soil, and once soil water supply starts to limit transpiration, root potentials are substantially less negative in the morning than in the afternoon. This leads to higher stomatal conductances, CO2 assimilation and transpiration in the morning compared to later in the day. Stomatal conductance is sensitive to soil and plant hydraulic properties and to root length density only after approximately 10 d of soil drying, when supply of water by the soil to the roots becomes limiting. High atmospheric demand causes transpiration rates, LE, to decline at a slightly higher soil water content, θs, than at low atmospheric demand, but all curves of LE versus θs fall on the same line when soil water supply limits transpiration. Stomatal conductance cannot be modelled in isolation, but must be fully coupled with models of photosynthesis/respiration and the transport of water from soil, through roots, stems and leaves to the atmosphere.  相似文献

Abstract. A model of photosynthesis (PGEN) is presented. The model assumes that optimal use is made of the leaf nitrogen available for partitioning between the carboxylase and thylakoid components. This results in predictions of Rubisco and chlorophyll concentrations very similar to those measured elsewhere. A function is incorporated which represents the detrimental effects of negative leaf water potentials on the Calvin cycle, producing a quantitative and mechanistic trade-off between CO2 entering, and H2O leaving, the leaf. Thus, an optimal stomatal conductance and associated internal partial pressure of CO2 exists for any given set of environmental conditions. The model calculates this optimal state for the leaf, which is its output. The model was subjected to changes in the following parameters: soil water potential, irradiance, ambient CO2 partial pressure, leaf temperature, leaf-to-air vapour pressure deficit, wind speed, atmospheric pressure, leaf nitrogen content, root dry weight and leaf width. These perturbations resulted in changes in predicted optimal conductance which were very similar to what has been observed. In general, as the capacity of the leaf to fix CO2 increased, so did the predicted optimal conductance, with the internal partial pressure of CO2 being maintained close to 22Pa.  相似文献

Use of infrared analyzers to measure water vapor concentrations in photosynthesis systems is becoming common. It is known that sensitivity of infrared carbon dioxide and water vapor analyzers is affected by the oxygen concentration in the background gas, particularly for absolute analyzers, but the potential for large errors in estimates of stomatal conductance due to effects of oxygen concentration on the sensitivity of infrared water vapor analyzers is not widely recognized. This work tested three types of infrared water vapor analyzers for changes in sensitivity of infrared water vapor analyzers depending on the oxygen content of the background gas. It was found that changing from either 0 or 2% to 21% oxygen in nitrogen decreased the sensitivity to water vapor for all three types of infrared water vapor analyzers by about 4%. The change in sensitivity was linear with oxygen mole fraction. The resulting error in calculated stomatal conductance would depend strongly on the leaf to air vapor pressure difference and leaf temperature, and also on whether leaf temperature was directly measured or calculated from energy balance. Examples of measurements of gas exchange on soybean leaves under glasshouse conditions indicated that changing from 21% to 2% oxygen produced an artifactual apparent increase in stomatal conductance which averaged about 30%. Similar errors occurred for `conductances' of wet filter paper. Such errors could affect inferences about the carbon dioxide dependence of the sensitivity of photosynthesis to oxygen. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The stomata are a key channel of the water cycle in ecosystems, and are constrained by both physiological and environmental elements. The aim of this study was to parameterize stomatal conductance by extending a previous empirical model and a revised Ball-Berry model. METHODS: Light and CO(2) responses of stomatal conductance and photosynthesis of winter wheat in the North China Plain were investigated under ambient and free-air CO(2) enrichment conditions. The photosynthetic photon flux density and CO(2) concentration ranged from 0 to 2000 micro mol m(-2) s(-1) and from 0 to 1400 micro mol mol(-1), respectively. The model was validated with data from a light, temperature and CO(2) response experiment. RESULTS: By using previously published hyperbolic equations of photosynthetic responses to light and CO(2), the number of parameters in the model was reduced. These response curves were observed diurnally with large variations of temperature and vapour pressure deficit. The model interpreted stomatal response under wide variations in environmental factors. CONCLUSIONS: Most of the model parameters, such as initial photon efficiency and maximum photosynthetic rate (P(max)), have physiological meanings. The model can be expanded to include influences of other physiological elements, such as leaf ageing and nutrient conditions, especially leaf nitrogen content.  相似文献

Element content and expression of genes of interest on single cell types, such as stomata, provide valuable insights into their specific physiology, improving our understanding of leaf gas exchange regulation. We investigated how far differences in stomatal conductance (gs) can be ascribed to changes in guard cells functioning in amphistomateous leaves. gs was measured during the day on both leaf sides, on well-watered and drought-stressed trees (two Populus euramericana Moench and two Populus nigra L. genotypes). In parallel, guard cells were dissected for element content and gene expressions analyses. Both were strongly arranged according to genotype, and drought had the lowest impact overall. Normalizing the data by genotype highlighted a structure on the basis of leaf sides and time of day both for element content and gene expression. Guard cells magnesium, phosphorus, and chlorine were the most abundant on the abaxial side in the morning, where gs was at the highest. In contrast, genes encoding H+-ATPase and aquaporins were usually more abundant in the afternoon, whereas genes encoding Ca2+-vacuolar antiporters, K+ channels, and ABA-related genes were in general more abundant on the adaxial side. Our work highlights the unique physiology of each leaf side and their analogous rhythmicity through the day.  相似文献

In order to separate the net effect of growth at elevated [CO2] on stomatal conductance (gs) into direct and acclimatory responses, mid‐day values of gs were measured for plants grown in field plots in open‐topped chambers at the current ambient [CO2], which averaged 350 μmol mol?1 in the daytime, and at ambient + 350 μmol mol?1[CO2] for winter wheat, winter barley, potato and sorghum. The acclimatory response was determined by comparing gs measured at 700 μmol mol?1[CO2] for plants grown at the two [CO2]. The direct effect of increasing [CO2] from 350 to 700 μmol mol?1 was determined for plants grown at the lower concentration. Photosynthetic rates were measured concurrently with gs. For all species, growth at the higher [CO2] significantly reduced gs measured at 700 μmol mol?1[CO2]. The reduction in gs caused by growth at the higher [CO2] was larger for all species on days with low leaf to air water vapour pressure difference for a given temperature, which coincided with highest conductances and also the smallest direct effects of increased [CO2] on conductance. For barley, there was no other evidence for stomatal acclimation, despite consistent down‐regulation of photosynthetic rate in plants grown at the higher [CO2]. In wheat and potato, in addition to the vapour pressure difference interaction, the magnitude of stomatal acclimation varied directly in proportion to the magnitude of down‐regulation of photosynthetic rate through the season. In sorghum, gs consistently exhibited acclimation, but there was no down‐regulation of photosynthetic rate. In none of the species except barley was the direct effect the larger component of the net reduction in gs when averaged over measurement dates. The net effect of growth at elevated [CO2] on mid‐day gs resulted from unique combinations of direct and acclimatory responses in the various species.  相似文献

Knowledge of responses of photosynthesis, respiration, and stomatal conductance to cumulative ozone uptake (COU) is still scarce, and this is particularly the case for adult trees. The effect of ozone (O(3)) exposure on trees was examined with 60-year-old beech trees (FAGUS SYLVATICA) at a forest site of southern Germany. Trees were exposed to the ambient O(3) regime (1 x O(3)) or an experimentally elevated twice-ambient O(3) regime (2 x O(3)). The elevated 2 x O (3) regime was provided by means of a free-air O(3) canopy exposure system. The hypotheses were tested that (1) gas exchange is negatively affected by O(3) and (2) the effects of O(3) are dose-dependent and thus the sizes of differences between treatments are positively related to COU. Gas exchange (light-saturated CO(2) uptake rate A(max), stomatal conductance g (s), maximum rate of carboxylation Vc (max), ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate turnover limited rate of photosynthesis J (max), CO(2) compensation point CP, apparent quantum yield of net CO(2) uptake AQ, carboxylation efficiency CE, day- and nighttime respiration) and chlorophyll fluorescence (electron transfer rate, ETR) were measured IN SITU on attached sun and shade leaves. Measurements were made periodically throughout the growing seasons of 2003 (an exceptionally dry year) and 2004 (a year with average rainfall). In 2004 Vc(max), J(max), and CE were lower in trees receiving 2 x O(3) compared with the ambient O(3) regime (1 x O(3)). Treatment differences in Vc (max), J (max), CE were rather small in 2004 (i.e., parameter levels were lower by 10 - 30 % in 2 x O(3) than 1 x O(3)) and not significant in 2003. In 2004 COU was positively correlated with the difference between treatments in A (max), g (s), and ETR (i.e., consistent with the dose-dependence of O(3)'s deleterious effects). However, in 2003, differences in A(max), g (s), and ETR between the two O(3) regimes were smaller at the end of the dry summer 2003 (i.e., when COU was greatest). The relationship of COU with effects on gas exchange can apparently be complex and, in fact, varied between years and within the growing season. In addition, high doses of O(3) did not always have significant effects on leaf gas exchange. In view of the key findings, both hypotheses were to be rejected.  相似文献

Blue light induced stomatal opening has been studied by applying a short pulse (~5 to 60 s) of blue light to a background of saturating photosynthetic red photons, but little is known about steady-state stomatal responses. Here we report stomatal responses to blue light at high and low CO2 concentrations. Steady-state stomatal conductance (gs) of C3 plants increased asymptotically with increasing blue light to a maximum at 20% blue (120 μmol m−2 s−1). This response was consistent from 200 to 800 μmol mol−1 atmospheric CO2 (Ca). In contrast, blue light induced only a transient stomatal opening (~5 min) in C4 species above a Ca of 400 μmol mol−1. Steady-state gs of C4 plants generally decreased with increasing blue intensity. The net photosynthetic rate of all species decreased above 20% blue because blue photons have lower quantum yield (moles carbon fixed per mole photons absorbed) than red photons. Our findings indicate that photosynthesis, rather than a blue light signal, plays a dominant role in stomatal regulation in C4 species. Additionally, we found that blue light affected only stomata on the illuminated side of the leaf. Contrary to widely held belief, the blue light-induced stomatal opening minimally enhanced photosynthesis and consistently decreased water use efficiency.  相似文献

Studies with the variable J method have reported that mesophyll conductance (gm) rapidly decreases with increasing intercellular CO2 partial pressures (Ci) or decreasing irradiance. Similar responses have been suggested with the online isotope discrimination method, although with less consistency. Here we show that even when the true gm is constant, the variable J method can produce an artefactual dependence of gm on Ci or irradiance similar to those reported in previous studies for any of the following factors: day respiration and chloroplastic CO2 photocompensation point are estimated with Laisk method; Ci or electron transport rate is positively biased; net photosynthetic rate is negatively biased; insufficient NADPH is assumed while insufficient ATP limits RuBP regeneration. The isotopic method produces similar artefacts if fractionation of carboxylation or Ci is positively biased or Δ13 negatively biased. A non‐zero chloroplastic resistance to CO2 movement results in a qualitatively different dependence of gm on Ci or irradiance and this dependence is only sensitive at low Ci. We thus cannot rule out the possibility that previously reported dependence of gm on Ci or irradiance is a methodological artefact. Recommendations are made to take advantage of sensitivities of the variable J and isotopic methods for estimating gm.  相似文献
