The observation that LINE-1 transposable elements are enriched on the X in comparison to the autosomes led to the hypothesis that LINE-1s play a role in X chromosome inactivation. If this hypothesis is correct, loss of LINE-1 activity would be expected to result in species extinction or in an alternate pathway of dosage compensation. One such alternative pathway would be to evolve a karyotype that does not require dosage compensation between the sexes. Two of the three extant species of the Ryukyu spiny rat Tokudaia have such a karyotype; both males and females are XO. We asked whether this karyotype arose due to loss of LINE-1 activity and thus the loss of a putative component in the X inactivation pathway. Although XO Tokudaia has no need for dosage compensation, LINE-1s have been recently active in Tokudaia osimensis and show higher density on the lone X than on the autosomes.  相似文献

Diplothrix legata and Tokudaia osimensis are rodent species endemic to the Ryukyu Islands (Okinawa area) of the southern part of Japan. To place them within a phylogenetic framework of Asian rodent species, we examined the molecular relationships among these species and Apodemus, Micromys, Mus, and Rattus, using an analysis of mitochondrial cytochrome b gene (1140 bp) and nuclear IRBP gene (782 bp) sequences. The results indicate that the four main murine genera and Tokudaia diverged at similar evolutionary times, namely at the time of the radiation of Murinae, 14 to 40 million years ago, depending on different concepts for the divergence times of Rattus and Mus. In contrast, Diplothrix separated from the Rattus group more recently. Our results indicate that D. legata and the Rattus group diverged at 20-30% of the divergence time of Rattus and Mus under the assumption of the molecular clock, suggesting that D. legata established its lineage at least by the beginning of the Pleistocene era. It is thus evident that the Okinawa area preserves rare indigenous species with various levels of genetic endemicity.  相似文献

A part of mouse Zfy-2 sequence was synthesized and used to screen a genomic library of the spinous country-rat (Tokudaia osimensis spp., 2n = 45). An isolated clone had the C-terminal region of Zfy, which consisted of 1190 bp, encoded 336 amino acid residues, and harbored 11 out of 13 zinc finger motifs. With this as a probe, a bovine testis cDNA library was screened. Two ZFX clones were isolated and their sequences combined. The short sequence, lacking part of the 5′ upstream region, was amplified by PCR or RT-PCR, cloned, and sequenced. A full-length ZFX was constructed by combining these three sequences. The bovine ZFX consisted of 5328 bp and encoded 800 amino acid residues, which contained 13 zinc finger motifs. ZFX was used as a probe for fluorescence in situ hybridization and was mapped to Xq34, different from its previously reported site at Xq21-q231. A SINE (short interspersed nuclear element) sequence consisting of 188 bp was found close to the end of the 3′-untranslated region of ZFX. The SINE sequence hybridized to all bovine chromosomes. ZFY is highly homologous with ZFX and, as a result, ZFY could be mapped simultaneously. ZFY was mapped to the distal region of the short arm of the Y Chromosome (Chr) (Yp13), contradicting the previously reported position Yq1. Ovine and caprine ZFY were also mapped with bovine ZFX. Both were mapped to the distal region of the short arm of the Y Chr (Yp12-p13). Ovine ZFX was mapped to a region close to the centromere of the X Chr (Xq13). Ryukyu spiny rats (genus Tokudaia), which are endemic to the central part of the Nansei Shoto archipelago in Japan, have unique karyotypes with odd numbers of chromosomes and no cytologically recognizable Y chromosome. The chromosome numbers of Tokudaia osimensis from Amamioshima and of Tokudaia sp. from Tokunoshima are 2n = 25 and 2n = 45, respectively, with a putative single X chromosome. The mouse X probe hybridized to the unpaired X chromosome, except for the distal part of the short arm in a female specimen of T. osimensis and in one male and one female of Tokudaia sp. Fluorescence in situ hybridization with the Tspy (testis-specific protein, Y-encoded) gene from both male and female cells of Tokudaia sp. by PCR localized Tspy to the distal part of the long arm of the X chromosome. Another Y-related gene, Zfy, from Tokudaia sp. was also localized to the same region in both species. Although the Sry gene is absent in this species, the present results suggest that the Y-chromosome segment carrying functional Y-linked genes, such as Tspy and Zfy, is translocated onto the distal part of the long arm of the X chromosome.  相似文献

Species interactions, such as interspecific competition, determine population dynamics and community structure. In a park of Amami Oshima Island, Japan, two field cricket species Teleogryllus occipitalis (Audinet‐Serville) (Gryllidae) and Loxoblemmus equestris Saussure (Gryllidae) are dominant species. We examined the interference competition at the nymph and adult stages in the two crickets under controlled laboratory conditions. Survival and emergence rates of T. occipitalis were not affected by the density of L. equestris, whereas survival and emergence rates of L. equestris decreased as the density of T. occipitalis increased. These results showed that T. occipitalis was competitively superior over L. equestris in species interactions. We discuss inconsistency between the results and coexistence of these two species under field conditions.  相似文献

Eimeria takydromi n. sp., a coccidian infecting the gall-bladder epithelium and bile-ducts, was found to parasitise three Takydromus species: T. tachydromoides of Honshu, Japan; T. smaragdinus of Amami Oshima, Ryukyu Islands, Japan; and T. sexlineatus of Thailand. Although differences were found in the mean oöcyst and sporocyst indices among the different hosts, the considerable overlap in morphometric characters demonstrated conspecificity. Eimeria takydromi is an addition to the symbiotic complex associated with Takydromus spp. in eastern and southeastern Asia that includes Plasmodium sasai, Trypanosoma takydromi, Schellackia sp. and Lizard Erythrocytic Virus. These host-symbiote associations may have persisted since a lacertid ancestral to the modern species of Takydromus dispersed throughout the region from the late Pliocene.  相似文献

The life history of three populations ofProtohermes grandis and two populations ofProtohermes immaculatus (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) was compared. In general, the larvae lived in stream riffles for 2 years and the adults appeared in summer. Adult body size differed between these closely related species and also between the populations ofP. grandis. Dwarfism occurred inP. immaculatus, a species that is endemic to the small, isolated island, Amami Island. The population ofP. grandis on Yaku Island, located between Amami Island and the mainland Kyushu, had an intermediate body size between that ofP. immaculatus and the mainland population ofP. grandis. Despite being an insular population,P. grandis on Tsushima Island had a similar body size to mainlandP. grandis. In these populations with large adults, some larvae lived in the streams for 3 years. The size distribution of benthic animals, which are the prey available toProtohermes larvae, differed between the streams studied. The density of large prey was lowest on Amami Island, intermediate on Yaku Island, and highest on the mainland and Tsushima Island. Different size distributions of available prey may be caused by the differences of benthic fauna; most of Ecdyonuridae and Ephemerellidae (large mayflies) and Perlidae (large stoneflies) were not found on Amami and Yaku Islands. Thus, there is a tendency to dwarfism in the populations ofProtobermes inhabiting streams where the density of large prey is low.  相似文献

The architectonics of spines and hair was studied in Neacomys spinosus, Tokudaia osimensis, Arvicanthis somalicus, Leopoldamys sabanus, L. edwardsi, Maxomys moi, M. surifer, Niviventer fulvescens, N. confucianus, N. cremoriventer, Acomys cahirinus, A. somalica, Hystrix indica, H. cristata, Atherurus macrourus, Erethizon dorsatum, Proechimys steerei, and Lonchotrix emiliae. The presence of a dorsal longitudinal furrow covered by a modified cuticle is a common structural feature of spines in all studied species except E. dorsatum, H. indica, and H. cristata. The frontal surface of the mosaic (scales located side by side) and terrace cuticle (steps between scales) varies in different species from smooth to rib-folded. A terminology has been proposed to describe the main structures of spine and hair. The adaptive significance of the spine architectonics in rodents is discussed.  相似文献

A line of transgenic mouse T604 transmitted a transgene to progeny together with a set of chromosomes with a reciprocal translocation. The transgene was integrated at a single site in the translocated chromosomes, as revealed by fluorescence in situ hybridization. The transgenic hemizygous males, also heterozygous for the translocation of chromosomes, showed apparently normal spermatogenesis, while the males homozygous for the transgene as well as for the translocated chromosomes showed a defect in spermatogenesis. Considering that the genetic rearrangement by either insertion of the transgene or the chromosome translocation in the T604 mouse line might have caused a recessive mutation in a gene indispensable for spermatogenesis, we have mapped the transgene integration site and the translocation breakpoints in mouse chromosomes. Linkage analysis with SSLP markers showed that the loci for the transgene and the translocation breakpoints were closely located to D5Mit24 on Chromosome (Chr) 5, and to a region between D19Mit19 and D19Jpk2 on Chr 19. Mea2 gene, mapped only 2 cM from D5Mit24 and known to show male-specific enhanced expression in the testis, was analyzed as a candidate for the gene disrupted in T604 transgenic mice. Southern blot analysis revealed that Mea2 gene was indeed disrupted in T604 mice, and Northern blot analysis of the testis RNA showed that the expression of Mea2 was annihilated in the testis of T604 transgenic homozygotes. In species with highly structured population, such as Trichogramma spp., mating occurs mostly at emergence on the patch and early emerging males have an advantage, as they are present when the first females emerge. However, early emergence of male could also enable males to mature sexually before the emergence of females or enhance their capacity to induce higher receptivity in females. We measured time of emergence of male and female Trichogramma evanescens Westwood (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) from hosts that were parasitized within a 30 min period. We also measured the effect of male age on their capacity to mate, and the ability of inseminated females to produce daughters. To verify if early emerging males induced higher receptivity in females, we observed the females mate choice between males of different ages. Our results indicated that the mean time of emergence between males and females was 29 min for individuals that develop in 9 days and 10 min for individuals that develop in 10 days. The protandry observed in this species could be the result of either a faster development of males or a male first strategy by the ovipositing female. In T. evanescens, protandry does not permit males to mature sexually nor to induce higher receptivity in females. The main advantage of protandry for males thus appears to be early access to females as they emerge.  相似文献

To determine the level of inter-population variation in wing form and the induction of reproductive diapause as affected by photoperiod, females of five populations of arrhenotokous Thrips nigropilosus Uzel were reared under four different photoperiodic conditions at 18°C. The experimental populations originated from Nakijin-son, Motobu-cho, and Uruma-shi in Okinawa Island, Amami-shi in Amami-Oshima Island, and Wakayama-shi on Honshu Island. In all five populations, only macropterae were observed when the photoperiod was 13 h light/11 h dark. Brachypterae were observed as the light period was reduced to 11.5 or 12 h in the Wakayama population, and to 10 or 11.5 h in the Nakijin, Motobu, and Uruma populations. Brachypterous females were observed in the Amami population only when the light period was 10 h. With the same photoperiod, only brachypterae were observed in the Wakayama and Uruma populations. Short-day conditions also induced reproductive diapause in the Wakayama population but not in the Amami and Okinawa Island populations. Under 10 h light/14 h dark, almost all hybrids obtained from crossing Wakayama with Amami populations entered reproductive diapause. Some populations in Okinawa Island may have been originated in northern localities.  相似文献

Sexual size dimorphism can result in reduced competition if it leads males and females to use different foraging techniques or consume different prey items. Among woodpeckers, differences between males and females in bill length are common and may explain foraging differences in this family of birds. Northern Flickers (Colaptes auratus) are ground‐foraging woodpeckers that specialize on ants. However, the overall contribution of ants to their diet and the proportions of particular ant genera in their diet are not well known. To understand the relationship between bill morphology and the consumption of prey items, we compared the bill length and bill width of male and female flickers. We then collected and analyzed fecal samples from breeding flickers (N = 40 males, 33 females) at a study site in central British Columbia, Canada. Bills of male flickers were significantly longer (4%) and wider (5%) than those of females. Of 11 prey types identified, ants made up over 99% of their diet, and the abundance and composition of ant taxa in the diet did not differ between the sexes. We found significant year and time of season effects, with the abundance of Tapinoma sessile and Lasius spp. increasing from May to the end of June and differing between years. This difference in diet composition between years may have been due to changes in the abundance or accessibility of certain ant taxa related to differences in vegetation structure or weather. Nine ant taxa were consumed by flickers and the four most common were T. sessile, Lasius spp.,Myrmica spp., and the Formica fusca species group. The degree of dimorphism in bill size of male and female Northern Flickers in our study was smaller than reported for several species of arboreal‐foraging woodpeckers, suggesting that bill size of ground‐foraging woodpeckers may not be strongly linked to niche separation at the level of prey selection.  相似文献

To investigate whether or not oviposition on substrates other than host plants (e.g., non‐host plants, abiotic materials) would affect the evolution of egg size in phytophagous insects, we studied the winter cherry bug, Acanthocoris sordidus (Thunberg) (Heteroptera: Coreidae), as a model organism for its interpopulation variation in oviposition preference. The rate of oviposition off host plants is much higher in the Amami Island population than in either the Kyoto or Kochi populations. We compared egg size and number among the three local populations from Kyoto, Kochi, and Amami Island. In addition, to evaluate the adaptive significance of larger eggs for offspring in terms of searching for host plants, we examined the relationship between egg size and first‐instar body size. We also searched for a relationship between egg size and starvation tolerance in the second instars because first instars can develop to second instars without food intake, and thus the substantial host‐searching stage is the second instar, when females lay their eggs off host plants. Females from the Amami population produced fewer larger eggs than females from either the Kyoto or Kochi population. Regardless of the local population, the body size of first instars that emerged from larger eggs was larger, and the second instars originating from larger eggs had a higher starvation tolerance. The larger body size and higher starvation tolerance should enable nymphs to disperse further, which may enhance the probability of successfully reaching host plants. These results suggest that egg size in A. sordidus may be determined in relation to its oviposition habits to maximize reproductive success, resulting in interpopulation variation in egg size.  相似文献

By means of somatic cell hybrids segregating rat chromosomes, we determined the chromosome localization of three rat genes of the Jun family: Jumb (Chr 19), Jun (=c-Jun) (Chr 5) and Jund (Chr 16). The Jun gene was also localized to the 5q31–33 region by fluorescence in situ hybridization. These rat gene assignments reveal two new homologies with mouse and human chromosomes, and provide a new example of synteny conserved in the human and a rodent species (the mouse), but split between the two rodent species.  相似文献

The seasonal change in size of Laurencia brongniartii was observed for the year 2002 at Banshobana Park, Satsuma Peninsula and Tsuchihama Beach, Amami Oshima, both in Kagoshima Prefecture, Japan. Additionally, the vertical distribution of this species was also studied at Tsuchihama Beach (second site), where the largest populations were found. Maximum lengths were observed in October ‐ November with a size of 100 ± 6 mm at Banshobana Park and 111 ± 5 mm at Tsuchihama Beach. Line‐transects conducted at Tsuchihama Beach, were analyzed to determine the vertical distribution of L. brongniartii due to depth and the slope of the substrate. Alga was found growing in areas restricted to low levels of light.  相似文献

Fluorescence-labeled DNA probes constructed from three whole house mouse (Mus domesticus) chromosomes were hybridized to metaphase spreads from deer mouse (Peromyscus maniculatus) to identify homologies between the species. Mus Chr 7 probe hybridized strongly to the ad-centromeric two-thirds of Peromyscus Chr 1q. Most of Mus 3 probe hybridized principally to two disjunct segments of Peromyscus Chr 3. Mus Chr 9 probe hybridized entirely to the whole Peromyscus Chr 7. Three Peromyscus linkage groups were assigned to chromosomes, based on linkage homology with Mus. The data also are useful in interpretation of chromosomal evolutionary history in myomorphic rodents. Received: 1 December 1998 / Accepted: 17 February 1999  相似文献

The inheritance of adiposity and related traits has been investigated in the obese, diabetes-prone KK/HlLt (KK) and the lean, normoglycemic C57BL/6J (B6) mouse strains, their F1 hybrids, and a large intercross generation. Adiposity index (AI) was defined as the sum of four fat depot weights divided by body weight. Both male and female KK mice were obese, but AI values averaged twofold higher in females than in males. In contrast, B6 females were slightly more lean than males. A genome-wide search revealed several qualitative trait loci (QTLs) affecting AI. The proximal region of Chromosome (Chr) 9 has a large effect on AI, with a much stronger effect in females (lod = 6.3) than in males (lod = 2.7). The data for females fit a model in which a dominant allele from KK increases AI by 30%, with the lod score peak falling between markers D9Mit66 and D9Mit328. This QTL has large effects on inguinal and mesenteric fat pad weights, with smaller effects on gonadal and retroperitoneal fat pads. The region of Chr 9 containing this QTL has extensive homology to human Chr 11q. An X-linked QTL affecting AI was evident in males (lod = 3.77), but not females (lod = 0.7). Exclusion of mesenteric fat from male AI resulted in an increased lod score (lod = 5.0) at 8 cM distal to DXMit166. A suggestive AI QTL (lod = 4.2), differentially affecting males, was localized to Chr 18 near the glucocorticoid receptor locus. A region of Chr 7 had a strong effect on body weight (lod = 6.9), a significant effect on inguinal fat% (lod = 4.4), and a suggestive effect on AI in females (lod = 4.1). Plasma leptin levels were associated with genotypes on Chr 9 (lod = 5.9) and Chr 7 (lod = 4.2). A region of Chr 1 had a suggestive effect on fasted blood glucose (lod = 3.6).
