To test if the high nutrient inputs of agroeosystems select for specialized agroecotypes or for phenotypic plasticity, Ontario populations of the northwardly migrating annual weed Solanum ptycanthum from ruderal (beach) and agricultural habitats were compared over a nutrient gradient. Temporal variation of total available nitrogen was determined in both types of habitats. As gene flow via seed contamination of tomato transplants from S. United States was detected, variation in response to nutrient (N) levels was also compared between agrestal populations from the northern (Ontario) and southern (Georgia) ends of the species range. Five families from six populations (two northern agrestal, two northern ruderal and two southern agrestal) were grown in the greenhouse at low, medium and high nutrient levels, and plant growth and traits associated with reproductive success measured. All populations displayed significant levels of plasticity in the majority of vegetative and reproductive traits. There were no detectable differences over the levels of nutrients tested between individuals sampled from northern agrestal and ruderal populations, even though variation in available nitrogen is greater in agroecosystems. Southern agrestal populations were genetically differentiated from the northern populations, and exhibited almost twice the overall plasticity of northern populations, measured by the Mahalanobis distance. Canonical discriminant analysis showed complete overlap in the northern populations over all nutrient levels, suggesting that colonization of new habitats is via a general-purpose genotype, rather than by selection for specialized agroeotypes. 相似文献

Steroid sex hormones have an organizational role in gender-specific brain development. Aromatase (cytochrome P450AR), converting testosterone (T) to estradiol-17β (E2) is a key enzyme in brain development and the regulation of aromatase determines the availability of E2 effective for neural differentiation. Gender differences in brain development and behaviour are likely to be influenced by E2 acting during sensitive periods. This differentiating action has been demonstrated in rodent and avian species, but also probably occurs in primates including humans. In rodents, E2 is formed in various hypothalamic areas of the brain during fetal and postnatal development. The question considered here is whether hypothalamic aromatase activity is gender-specific during sensitive phases of behavioural and brain development, and when these sensitive phases occur. In vitro preoptic and limbic aromatase activity has been measured in two strains of wild mice, genetically selected for behavioural aggression based on attack latency, and in the BALB/c mouse. Short attack latency males show a different developmental pattern of aromatase activity in hypothalamus and amygdala to long attack latency males. Using primary brain cell cultures of the BALB/c mouse, sex differences in hypothalamic aromatase activity during both early embryonic and later perinatal development can be demonstrated, with higher E2 formation in males. The sex dimorphisms are brain region specific, since no differences between male and female are detectable in cultured cortical cells. Immunoreactive staining with a polyclonal aromatase antibody identifies a neuronal rather than an astroglial localization of the enzyme. T increases fetal brain aromatase activity and numbers of aromatase-immunoreactive hypothalamic neuronal cell bodies. T appears to influence the growth of hypothalamic neurons containing aromatase. Differentiation of sexually dimorphic brain mechanisms may involve maturation of a gender-specific network of estrogen-forming neurons which are steroid-sensitive in early development. 相似文献

Germination ecology of Parthenium hysterophorus, recently introduced to Ethiopia, was studied in a series of experiments. Viability of the seeds was greater than 50% after 26 months of burial in the soil indicating the potential build‐up of a substantial persistent soil seed bank. A short period of dry storage was sufficient to overcome a light requirement for germination in a minor fraction of the seeds. Likewise, seeds exhumed from burial showed an increase in germination ability in darkness over time, with a weak tendency for seasonal cyclicity in dormancy level at one of two sites. Germination occurred at the mean minimum (10°C) and maximum (25°C) temperatures of the collection sites, as well as over a wide range of fluctuating (12/2°C‐35/25°C) temperatures in light. No germination of P. hysterophorus seeds occurred at osmotic potentials < ‐0.52 MPa (at 27°C), the species being less tolerant to moisture stress than sorghum grains. Most seedlings emerged from shallowly buried (< 0.5 cm) seeds and none from more than 5 cm depth. Naturally dispersed seeds required about 60 days, at a hot lowland site, to start emergence despite the presence of adequate rainfall, and higher number of seedlings emerged in undisturbed plots than in hand hoed plots. These experiments and field observations suggest that there are no obvious climatic conditions that may limit the germination of Parthenium hysterophorus in Ethiopia, but a high moisture requirement of the seeds for germination could be the major factor limiting germination during the dry season. 相似文献

The effect of various pre-treatments and their interaction with temperature on cumulative percentage and the rate of germination were evaluated for Digitaria nuda. Stored and fresh seeds were pre-treated with either 0.02 M KNO3, soaked in water for 24 h (priming), sterilized with 0.5% NaOCl or heat treated at 60 °C. Seeds were germinated at constant temperatures of 25 and 30 °C and fluctuating temperature regimes of 25/10 and 30/15 °C. The effect of pre-chilling on germination of stored and fresh seed was evaluated at 30/15 °C, and seed emergence in two soil types at different burial depths (0, 0.5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 cm) was also determined. The pre-treatment of stored seed with KNO3 resulted in the highest germination percentage (100%), whereas the pre-treatment of fresh seed with water for 24 h gave the best germination (99%), at constant temperatures of 25 and 30 °C. Pre-chilling of seed increased germination by more than 30%. Emergence from clay loam soil was greater compared with the emergence from sandy loam soil. Total seedling emergence decreased exponentially with increasing burial depths with only 5% of seed germinating from a burial depth of 6 cm. Results from this study showed that germination requirements are species specific and knowledge of factors influencing germination and emergence of grass weed seed can assist in predicting flushes in emergence allowing producers to implement control practices more effectively. 相似文献

A total of 56 vaquitas (Phocoena sinus) were examined to evaluate their sexual dimorphism and isometric and/or allometric growth in 35 external characteristics. Absolute and relative (to total length) measurements and growth rates were compared between sexually immature and mature females and males. T‐tests and analysis of variance (ANOVA) and covariance (ANCOVA) were used to evaluate sexual dimorphism. Sexual dimorphism in the vaquita was detected in the total length, head region (from blowhole to tip of upper jaw), anterior section of the body (from dorsal fin to tip of upper jaw), dorsal fin and the genital and anal regions. Fluke width is relatively larger in mature males than immature males, but in females this relative metric does not change during their development. In addition, males present a higher dorsal fin. These somatic changes are probably related to the swimming capacity (speed, agility, maneuvering) during the breeding season and/or foraging activities. A linear model of growth was used to determine possible proportional changes with respect to total body length through the development of 33 external characteristics. Males and females of almost all organisms exhibit sexual differences in body size, a phenomenon called sexual size dimorphism (SSD). How the sexes evolve to be different sizes, despite sharing the same genes that control growth and development, and hence a common genetic architecture, has remained elusive. Here, we show that the genetic architecture (heritabilities and genetic correlations) of the physiological mechanism that regulates size during the last stage of larval development of a moth, differs between the sexes, and thus probably facilitates, rather than hinders, the evolution of SSD. We further show that the endocrine system plays a critical role in generating SSD. Our results demonstrate that knowledge of the genetic architecture underlying the physiological process during development that ultimately produces SSD in adults can elucidate how males and females of organisms evolve to be of different sizes. 相似文献

We investigated aspects of self-reported health history–the number and duration of respiratory and stomach or intestinal infections and the number of uses of antibiotics over the last 3 years–in relation to measured facial masculinity, developmental instability [facial asymmetry and body fluctuating asymmetry (FA)] and facial attractiveness in a sample of 203 men and 203 women. As predicted from the hypothesis that the degree of facial masculinity is an honest signal of individual quality, men's facial masculinity correlated negatively and women's positively with respiratory disease number and duration. Stomach illness, however, was not associated significantly with facial masculinity and antibiotic use correlated significantly (negatively) only with men's facial masculinity. For both facial asymmetry and body FA, significant, positive associations were seen with the number of respiratory infections. In addition, facial asymmetry was associated positively with the number of days infected and marginally, in the same direction, with antibiotic use. Facial attractiveness showed no significant relationships with any of our health-history measures. This study provides some evidence that facial masculinity in both sexes may signal disease resistance and that developmental stability covaries positively with disease resistance. The validity of our health measures is discussed. 相似文献

Social evolution in honey bees has produced strong queen-worker dimorphism for plastic traits that depend on larval nutrition. The honey bee developmental programme includes both larval components that determine plastic growth responses to larval nutrition and nurse components that regulate larval nutrition. We studied how these two components contribute to variation in worker and queen body size and ovary size for two pairs of honey bee lineages that show similar differences in worker body-ovary size allometry but have diverged over different evolutionary timescales. Our results indicate that the lineages have diverged for both nurse and larval developmental components, that rapid changes in worker body-ovary size allometry may disrupt queen development and that queen-worker dimorphism arises mainly from discrete nurse-provided nutritional environments, not from a developmental switch that converts variable nutritional environments into discrete phenotypes. Both larval and nurse components have likely contributed to the evolution of queen-worker dimorphism. 相似文献

Sexual dimorphism in size (sexual size dimorphism; SSD) is nearlyubiquitous, but the relative importance of genetic versus environmentalcontrol of SSD is not known for most species. We investigatedproximate determinants of SSD in several species of squamatereptiles, including three species of Sceloporus lizards andthe diamond-backed rattlesnake (Crotalus atrox). In naturalpopulations of these species, SSD is caused by sexual differencesin age-specific growth. Males and females, however, may oftenshare similar potentials for growth: growth is strongly responsiveto the availability of food, and sexual differences in growthcan be greatly suppressed or completely absent under commonenvironmental conditions in the laboratory. Sexually divergentgrowth is expressed in natural environments because of inherentecological differences between males and females and becauseof potential epigenetic effects of sex-specific growth regulators.In field-active Sceloporus, sexual differences in growth rateare associated with sexual divergence in plasma testosterone.Experiments confirm that testosterone inhibits growth in speciesin which females are larger (for example, S. undulatus and S.virgatus) and stimulates growth in those in which males arelarger (for example, S. jarrovii). Interestingly, however, sexualdivergence in plasma testosterone is not accompanied by divergencein growth in S. jarrovii or in male-larger C. atrox in the laboratory.Furthermore, experimental effects of castration and testosteronereplacement on growth are not evident in captive S. jarrovii,possibly because growth effects of testosterone are supersededby an abundant, high-quality diet. In female-larger S. undulatus,growth may be traded-off against testosterone-induced reproductivecosts of activity. In male-larger species, costs of reproductionin terms of growth are suggested by supplemental feeding ofreproductive female C. atrox in their natural environment andby experimental manipulation of reproductive cost in femaleS. jarrovii. Growth costs of reproduction, however, do not contributesubstantially to the development of SSD in male-larger S. jarrovii.We conclude that the energetic costs of testosterone-induced,male reproductive behavior may contribute substantially to thedevelopment of SSD in some female-larger species. However, despitestrong evidence that reproductive investment exacts a substantialcost in growth, we do not support the reproductive cost hypothesisas a general explanation of SSD in male-larger species. 相似文献

Desert annual Suaeda acuminata produces two morphologically distinct types of seeds on the same plant. The main aims of our study were to compare germination characteristics of the dimorphic seeds, ascertain their dormancy types and give the hormonal explanation. The two seed types of S. acuminata absorbed water at different rates with brown seeds imbibing water faster. Germination percentages of brown seeds were significantly higher than those of black seeds in all temperature and light regimes tested. Eight weeks of cold stratification did not break dormancy of black seeds, whereas exogenous GA3 promoted germination. Excised embryos of untreated black seeds produced normal seedlings. Contents of ZR, GA3 and ABA of brown seeds were significantly higher than that of black seeds; while contents of IAA of black seeds were significantly higher than that of brown seeds. Brown seeds of S. acuminata are non-dormant, whereas black seeds have intermediate physiological dormancy (PD). Interaction among ZR, ABA and GA3 may play an important role in dormancy status of both seed types. This is the first report of non-dormancy and intermediate PD in a heteromorphic species. 相似文献

Abstract 1. The literature on ladybirds indicates that males are consistently smaller than females but take the same length of time to complete their development. Rearing Adalia bipunctata at 20 and 25 °C confirmed that protandry cannot account for sexual size dimorphism in this species, nor can a difference in egg size.

Developmental preformation can constrain growth responses of shoots to current conditions, but there is potential for flexibility in development preceding formation of the preformed organs. Mayapple (Podophyllum peltatum) is strongly heteroblastic, producing rhizome scales, bud scales, and either a single vegetative foliage leaf or two foliage leaves on a sexual shoot. To understand how and when preformation constrains growth responses, we compare (1) how leaf homologs of the renewal shoot differ in development, (2) whether there are differences in shoot development that occur in advance of morphological determination of shoot type, and (3) whether there are points of developmental flexibility in renewal shoot growth prior to preformation of the foliage and floral organs. We use scanning electron microscopy and histology to show that the three vegetative leaves (both types of scale leaves and the vegetative foliage leaf) are similar in the initial establishment of an encircling and overarching leaf base. Differences among them are found in the timing of differentiation of the leaf base and in the relative timing and degree of growth of the lamina and petiole. In contrast, foliage leaves on sexual shoots show less expression of the leaf base and precocious growth of the lamina and petiole. Prior to shoot type determination, there are no morphological differences in the sequence or position of leaf homologs that predict final shoot type. In this colony, leaves at positions 12 and 13, on average, appear to be identical in development until they are between 700 and 800 μm in length, when it becomes possible to distinguish leaves that will become vegetative foliage leaves from additional bud scale leaves on vegetative or sexual shoots. We suggest that late developmental determination of leaves at positions 12 and 13 reflects ontogenetic sensitivity to a transition to flowering. Thus, in mayapple, heteroblasty appears to facilitate developmental flexibility prior to the point where shoot growth becomes constrained by preformation of determined aerial structures. 相似文献

Little is known about positive interactions among members of herbaceous plant communities initiating secondary succession (i.e., ruderal communities). Here, we explored the possibility that Euphorbia schickendantzii (Euphorbia), a latex-containing herb, facilitates other ruderals by protecting them from herbivores in recently plowed and overgrazed sites in central Argentina. To test this hypothesis, we compared plant number, height, reproductive output, and herbivore damage for four species when associated with Euphorbia versus in adjacent open zones without Euphorbia. Additionally, we classified species in the community according to their palatability, and compared community composition, richness, and diversity between Euphorbia and open zones. Dominant (66 % relative abundance) and highly palatable species exhibited increased plant number, size, and fecundity, and decreased herbivory when associated with Euphorbia relative to non-Euphorbia zones. In contrast, a physically and chemically well-defended species showed greater number of individuals in the open and no differences in herbivory between sampling zones. In detrended correspondence analysis, ordination scores of most palatable species were closer to Euphorbia, while those of most unpalatable species were closer to the open. Community composition differed between areas, with six species (25 % of the community) occurring exclusively with Euphorbia and three other species occurring only in open zones. Additionally, richness and diversity were greater in communities associated with Euphorbia than in those associated with non-Euphorbia zones. These results support our hypothesis, highlight the importance of facilitation in altering community-level responses, and indicate that positive interactions can play a more significant role in organizing terrestrial ruderal communities than previously recognized. 相似文献

Sexual size dimorphism (SSD), a difference in body size between sexes, is common in many taxa. In insects, females are larger than males in >70% of all taxa in most orders. The fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster is one prominent model organism to investigate SSD since its clear and representative female-biased SSD and its growth regulation are well studied. Elucidating the number and nature of genetic elements that can potentially influence SSD would be helpful in understanding the evolutionary potential of SSD. Here, we investigated the SSD pattern caused by artificially introduced genetic variation in D. melanogaster, and examined whether variation in SSD was mediated by the sex-specific modification of developmental time. To map the genomic regions that had effects on sexual wing size and/or developmental time differences (SDtD), we reanalyzed previously published genome-wide deficiency mapping data to evaluate the effects of 376 isogenic deficiencies covering a total of ~67% of the genomic regions of the second and third chromosomes of D. melanogaster. We found genetic variation in SSD and SDtD generated by genomic deficiencies, and a negative genetic correlation between size and development time. We also found SSD and SDtD allometries that are not qualitatively congruent, which however overall at best only partly help in explaining the patterns found. We identified several genomic deficiencies with the tendency to either exaggerate or suppress SSD, in agreement with quantitative genetic null expectations of many loci with small effects. Assessing the relative contributions to seed set for each of a plant species’ floral visitors provides an indication of the
relative influence of these visitors on the plant’s reproductive success. This study examined pollinator activity and seed
set in a population of Heterotheca
subaxillaris, a species that exhibits a floret dimorphism (heads bearing disk and ray florets), and that is visited by both generalist
foragers and specialist bees. Visits by nine bee genera and one genus of skipper were recorded in the study population. During
the period of study, these insects varied in their relative abundance, in their foraging activity on a head, and in their
pollination effectiveness. The pattern of pollination effectiveness shown by the different pollinators was similar for both
floret types, although seed set was higher overall for ray florets. Pollinator importance, calculated as the product of pollination
effectiveness and relative abundance, was dictated by a pollinator’s relative abundance. The single specialist bee species
observed in the study population proved to have neither higher pollination effectiveness nor higher pollinator abundance than
other pollinators. This would suggest that H. subaxillaris is not under strong selective pressure to co-specialize with its specialist visitor.
