Flies evaluate movement within their visual field in order to control the course of flight and to elicit landing manoeuvres. Although the motor output of the two types of responses is quite different, both systems can be compared with respect to the underlying movement detection systems. For a quantitative comparison, both responses were measured during tethered flight under identical conditions. The stimulus was a sinusoidal periodic pattern of vertical stripes presented bilaterally in the fronto-lateral eye region of the fly. To release the landing response, the pattern was moved on either side from front to back. The latency of the response depends on the stimulus conditions and was measured by means of an infrared light-beam that was interrupted whenever the fly lifted its forelegs to assume a preprogrammed landing posture (Borst and Bahde 1986). As an optomotor stimulus the pattern moved on one side from front to back and on the other side in the opposite direction. The induced turning tendency was measured by a torque meter (Götz 1964). The response values which will be compared are the inverse latencies of the landing response and the amplitude of the yaw torque.
  1. Optomotor course-control is more sensitive to pattern movement at small spatial wavelengths (10° and 20°) than the landing response (Fig. 1a and b). This suggests that elementary movement detectors (EMDs, Buchner 1976) with large detection base (the distance between interacting visual elements) contribute more strongly to the landing than to the optomotor system.
  2. The optimum contrast frequencies of the different responses obtained at a comparatively high pattern contrast of about 0.6 was found to be between 1 and 10 Hz for the optomotor response, and around 20 Hz for the landing response (Fig. 2a and b). This discrepancy can be explained by the fact that the optomotor response was tested under stationary conditions (several seconds of stimulation) while for the landing response transient response characteristics of the movement detectors have to be taken into account (landing occurs under these conditions within less than 100 ms after onset of the movement stimulus). To test the landing system under more stationary conditions, the pattern contrast had to be reduced to low values. This led to latencies of several seconds. Then the optimum of the landing response is around 4 Hz. This is in the optimum range of the optomotor course-control response. The result suggests the same filter time constants for the movement detectors of both systems.
  3. The dependence of both responses on the position and the size of the pattern was examined. The landing response has its optimum sensitivity more ventrally than the optomotor response (Fig. 3a and b). Both response amplitudes increase with the size of the pattern in a similar progression (Fig. 3c and d).
In first approximation, the present results are compatible with the assumption of a common set of movement detectors for both the optomotor course-control and the landing system. Movement detectors with different sampling bases and at different positions in the visual field seem to contribute with different gain to both responses. Accordingly, the control systems underlying both behaviors are likely to be independent already at the level of spatial integration of the detector output.  相似文献

In tethered flying locusts, optomotor thrust responses induced by translatory pattern motion within the lateral visual fields were studied under closed-loop conditions. By modulating thrust in a compensatory manner, locusts counteracted a bias motion superposed on the thrust-related motion. This way, pattern speed was kept at 0° s–1, indicating the set point of the respective optomotor control circuit. Though the quality of bias compensation varied greatly, it was largely independent from pattern characteristics. It might indicate that the gain of behavior not only is controlled by an automatic mechanism but also is affected by spontaneous modulations. Compensation of bias motion was critically dependent on the relation between self- and bias-generated motion: Locusts did not take control over pattern motion if self- and bias-generated motion differed greatly. Instead, locusts adopted a constant, supposingly preferred, thrust value. Therefore, flight speed is assumed to be controlled by two systems: the optomotor and a preferred thrust system. In free flight, an equalization of the flight speed of locusts within a swarm might result from similar behavior. In combination with a presumed coordination of the locusts' course direction, this may explain the continued cohesion of swarms in the field.  相似文献

PurposeTo assess the suitability of retinal images held in the UK Biobank - the largest retinal data repository in a prospective population-based cohort - for computer assisted vascular morphometry, generating measures that are commonly investigated as candidate biomarkers of systemic disease.MethodsNon-mydriatic fundus images from both eyes of 2,690 participants - people with a self-reported history of myocardial infarction (n=1,345) and a matched control group (n=1,345) - were analysed using VAMPIRE software. These images were drawn from those of 68,554 UK Biobank participants who underwent retinal imaging at recruitment. Four operators were trained in the use of the software to measure retinal vascular tortuosity and bifurcation geometry.ResultsTotal operator time was approximately 360 hours (4 minutes per image). 2,252 (84%) of participants had at least one image of sufficient quality for the software to process, i.e. there was sufficient detection of retinal vessels in the image by the software to attempt the measurement of the target parameters. 1,604 (60%) of participants had an image of at least one eye that was adequately analysed by the software, i.e. the measurement protocol was successfully completed. Increasing age was associated with a reduced proportion of images that could be processed (p=0.0004) and analysed (p<0.0001). Cases exhibited more acute arteriolar branching angles (p=0.02) as well as lower arteriolar and venular tortuosity (p<0.0001).ConclusionsA proportion of the retinal images in UK Biobank are of insufficient quality for automated analysis. However, the large size of the UK Biobank means that tens of thousands of images are available and suitable for computational analysis. Parametric information measured from the retinas of participants with suspected cardiovascular disease was significantly different to that measured from a matched control group.  相似文献

Summary Feedback mechanisms exist in all the periferal sense organs including the eye, which acts as a highly efficient position control servo system. Histological studies so far have not revealed the precise circuitry of the eye movement control system but some information about it can be obtained by a study of the sources of feedback. Existing theories have considered three types of feedback originating in the oculomotor tract, in the proprioceptive fibres of the extrinsic eye muscles and from retinal image displacement. In the present experiments an optical arrangement has been used to vary or eliminate the amount of information available from retinal image motion, and the response of the eye to simple harmonic displacement of a target has been recorded. The response curves of gain (eyeball movement divided by target motion) against frequency indicate that the system is lion linear when the image falls in the retinal region which is insensitive to position. Outside this area, retinal image position is used as negative feedback but the information from the oculomotor tract must be regenerative. There is also evidence for feedback proportional to the first derivative of eyeball position and this function is ascribed to the proprioceptive signals; this form of feedback appears to saturate for large amplitude movements, thus avoiding heavy damping of the flick movements.A schematic eye movement control system having the same characteristics as the eye is proposed. The transfer function of this system indicates that it should be unstable if the sign of the retinal image feedback loop is reversed. Experiments with this form of feedback show that steady fixation is impossible and the eye performs a pendular nystagmus.  相似文献

Most birds show a characteristic head movement that consists of head stabilization and quick displacement. In this movement, which is analogous to saccadic eye movement in mammals, head stabilization plays an important role in stabilizing the retinal image. This head movement, called “head bobbing”, is particularly pronounced during walking. Previous studies focusing on anatomical and behavioral features have pointed out that visual information is also important for diving birds, indicating its significance in the head movements of diving birds. In the present study, the kinematic and behavioral features of head bobbing in diving little grebes were described by motion analysis to identify the head movement in diving birds. The results showed that head-bobbing stroke (HBS) consisted of a thrust phase and a hold phase as is typical for head bobbing during walking birds. This suggests that HBS is related to visual stabilization under water. In HBS, grebes tended to dive with longer stroke length and smaller stroke frequency than in non-bobbing stroke. This suggests that the behavior, which is related to vision, affects the kinematic stroke parameters. This clarification of underwater head movement will help in our understanding not only of vision, but also of the kinematic strategy of diving birds.  相似文献

The Eph family of receptor tyrosine kinases and their membrane-bound ligands, the ephrins, have been implicated in regulating cell adhesion and migration during development by mediating cell-to-cell signaling events. The transmembrane ephrinB1 protein is a bidirectional signaling molecule that signals through its cytoplasmic domain to promote cellular movements into the eye field, whereas activation of the fibroblast growth factor receptor (FGFR) represses these movements and retinal fate. In Xenopus embryos, ephrinB1 plays a role in retinal progenitor cell movement into the eye field through an interaction with the scaffold protein Dishevelled (Dsh). However, the mechanism by which the FGFR may regulate this cell movement is unknown. Here, we present evidence that FGFR-induced repression of retinal fate is dependent upon phosphorylation within the intracellular domain of ephrinB1. We demonstrate that phosphorylation of tyrosines 324 and 325 disrupts the ephrinB1/Dsh interaction, thus modulating retinal progenitor movement that is dependent on the planar cell polarity pathway. These results provide mechanistic insight into how fibroblast growth factor signaling modulates ephrinB1 control of retinal progenitor movement within the eye field.  相似文献

Retinal structure and concentration of retinoids involved in phototransduction changed during early development of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss , correlating with improvements in visual function. A test chamber was used to evaluate the presence of optokinetic or optomotor responses and to assess the functionality of the integrated cellular, physiological and biochemical components of the visual system. The results indicated that in rainbow trout optomotor responses start at 10 days post‐hatch, and demonstrated for the first time that increases in acuity, sensitivity to low light as well as in motion detection abilities occur from this stage until exogenous feeding starts. The structure of retinal cells such as cone ellipsoids increased in length as photopic visual acuity improved, and rod densities increased concurrently with improvements in scotopic thresholds (2·2 log10 units). An increase in the concentrations of the chromophore all‐trans‐retinal correlated with improvements of all behavioural measures of visual function during the same developmental phase.  相似文献

Tethered flying desert locusts, Schistocerca gregaria, generate yaw-torque in response to rotation of a radial grating located beneath them. By screening parts of the pattern, rotation of the unscreened grating turned out to induce a compensatory steering (by pattern motion within transversally oriented 90° wide sectors) as well as an upwind/downwind turning response (by pattern motion within the anterior ventral 90° wide sector). The strength and polarity of responses upon the unscreened grating results from a linear superposition of these two response components. The results are discussed with regard to a functional specialization of eye regions.In a typical experiment, 3 consecutive flight-phases, assumed to mirror start, long-range flight, and landing of a free-flying locust, were distinguished. They may result from a time dependent variation of the polarity and relative strength of upwind/downwind turning and compensatory steering responses. Starting and landing phases were under strong optomotor control and were dominated by the high-gain compensatory steering. In contrast, the phase of long-range flight was under weak optomotor control resulting from a low gain in both of the two response components. The biological significance of this variable strength of optomotor control on free flight orientation of swarming locusts is discussed.  相似文献

Optical coherence tomography (OCT) has revolutionises the diagnosis of retinal disease based on the detection of microscopic rather than subcellular changes in retinal anatomy. However, currently the technique is limited to the detection of microscopic rather than subcellular changes in retinal anatomy. However, coherence based imaging is extremely sensitive to both changes in optical contrast and cellular events at the micrometer scale, and can generate subtle changes in the spectral content of the OCT image. Here we test the hypothesis that OCT image speckle (image texture) contains information regarding otherwise unresolvable features such as organelle changes arising in the early stages of neuronal degeneration. Using ultrahigh resolution (UHR) OCT imaging at 800 nm (spectral width 140 nm) we developed a robust method of OCT image analyses, based on spatial wavelet and texture-based parameterisation of the image speckle pattern. For the first time we show that this approach allows the non-invasive detection and quantification of early apoptotic changes in neurons within 30 min of neuronal trauma sufficient to result in apoptosis. We show a positive correlation between immunofluorescent labelling of mitochondria (a potential source of changes in cellular optical contrast) with changes in the texture of the OCT images of cultured neurons. Moreover, similar changes in optical contrast were also seen in the retinal ganglion cell- inner plexiform layer in retinal explants following optic nerve transection. The optical clarity of the explants was maintained throughout in the absence of histologically detectable change. Our data suggest that UHR OCT can be used for the non-invasive quantitative assessment of neuronal health, with a particular application to the assessment of early retinal disease.  相似文献

Summary Neck muscles of Calliphora erythrocephala, situated in the anterior prothorax, are innervated on each side by 8 motor neurons arising in the brain (cervical nerve neurons, CN1–8) and at least 13 motor neurons arising in the prothoracic ganglion (anterior dorsal and frontal nerve neurons, ADN1,2 and FN1-11). Three prominent motor neurons (CN6 and FN1,2) are described in detail with special emphasis on their relationships with giant visual interneurons from the lobula plate, haltere interneurons, and primary afferents from the prosternal organs and halteres. These sensory organs detect head movement and body yaw, respectively. Neuronal relationships indicate that head movement is under multimodal sensory control that includes giant motion-sensitive neurons previously supposed to mediate the optomotor response in flying flies. The described pathways provide anatomical substrates for the control of optokinetic and yaw-incurred head movements that behavioural studies have shown must exist.  相似文献

The stability of visual perception despite eye movements suggests the existence in the visual system of neurons able to recognize whether the movement of a retinal image is due to the actual movement of an object or is self-induced by the ocular movement. We found neurons of this type in several areas of the monkey visual cortex and named them "real-motion" cells. Extracellular recordings were carried out from single neurons of the cortical prestriate area V3A of two awake macaque monkeys. Eighty-seven neurons were studied by comparing their responses during stimulus movement across the stationary receptive field, and receptive-field movement across the stationary stimulus. This visual stimulation was presented against a uniform visual background, in darkness or against a textured background. Neurons which were not real-motion in light (45/87) maintained their behaviour in darkness, while about 40% of real-motion cells lost this behaviour in darkness. Both real-motion and non real-motion cells maintained the same behaviour when tested against a uniform or textured visual background but often, texture increased the difference in the response that real-motion cells showed between stimulus and eye movement. These data suggest that the eye-movement signal which reaches real-motion cells and is responsible for their behaviour may be either retinal or extraretinal in nature. This double innervation is in good agreement with perceptual phenomena related to the detection of movement in the visual field.  相似文献

Optomotor control of course and altitude in the fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, requires dense networks of elementary movement detectors (EMD's) which cover most if not all of the visual field. The predominant types of EMD's in these networks represent interactions between neighbouring visual elements along the three main directions of the hexagonal array in the compound eye. — Course control in the walking fly is achieved mainly by pairs of equivalent EMD's which occupy 2 o'clock and 4 o'clock positions with respect to the right eye (Buchner, 1976). Comparison of the turning response and the torque response in the present account confirms the particular properties of this network, and proves the presumed bidirectional sensitivity of its EMD's for the course control responses of legs and wings in the corresponding modes of locomotion. — Altitude control during flight is achieved by a less homogeneous network of EMD's which modifies lift and thrust simultaneously by the appropriate control of the wing beat amplitudes. The predominant types of EMD's in the lateral eye regions occupy 12 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions with respect to the right eye (Buchner et al., 1978). The present evaluation of the optomotor responses of thrust and wing beat confirms the preferred orientation of these EMD's and discloses a pecularity of their internal structure. The movement detectors of this network lack the bidirectional sensitivity of the EMD's in the course control system. At least the fronto-lateral network of the altitude control system seems to consist mainly of pairs of equivalent unidirectional EMD's. The detectors in 12 o'clock position increase wing beat in response to movement of the visual surroundings from inferior to superior. The opposite effect is produced by the detectors in 2 o'clock position which respond to movement from anterior-superior to posterior-inferior. These properties qualify unidirectional EMD's as the functional units of the optomotor control system in the fruitfly. Pairs of unidirectional antagonists would be sufficient to establish the bidirectional sensitivity found in the movement detectors of the course control system.  相似文献

Summary The optomotor system of Drosophila is investigated in a flight simulator in which the fly's yaw torque controls the angular velocity of the panorama (striped drum, negative feedback). Flies in the flight simulator maintain a stable orientation even in a homogeneously textured panorama without landmarks. During straight flight, torque is not zero. It consists of small pulses mostly alternating in polarity. The course is controlled by the duration (and possibly amplitude) of the pulses. The system operates under reafference control. By comparing the pulses with the visual input the system continuously measures and adjusts the efficacy of the torque output. The comparison, however, is not between angular velocity and yaw torque but, instead, between visual acceleration and pretorque, the first time derivative of torque. For comparison, the system first computes a cross-correlation. If the correlation coefficient is above a certain threshold the system calculates the external gain and adjusts its internal gain so as to keep the total gain constant. With the correlation coefficient below threshold, however, the system keeps the internal gain low despite the infinitely small external gain. We propose that for a reafferent optomotor system the coupling coefficient and the correlation coefficient of pretorque and visual acceleration are more relevant than the distinction between exafference and reafference.Abbreviation EMD elementary movement detector  相似文献

Phymateus purpurascens Karsch has been studied in the wild and in captivity in Uganda. Its habits, colouration, behaviour and life cycle are described.
All individuals are attracted towards each other by visual stimuli, and a moving individual is more attractive than a stationary one. This behaviour is unchanged by several instars in isolation. The aggregated larvae tend to move in synchronous bursts. and it is suggested that this is due to retinal image stabilization by an optomotor reflex.
In an open field all instars are attracted towards isolated vertical objects in the visual field. This, together with the interindividual visual responses described, produces columns of moving insects. No olfactory communication could be demonstrated.
Adults and larvae behave similarly in experimental situations; this contrasts with the observed dispersion in the wild with increasing age. It is suggested that dispersion results from loss of visual contact, caused by (a) loss of the conspicuous larval colouration, (b) chance isolation, and (c) increased mobility of fledged adults. The possible biological function of the gregariou habit is discussed, and the significance of the various colour patterns of the life history as inter-and intraspecific signals.  相似文献

The directional selectivity of retinal ganglion cell responses represents a primitive pattern recognition that operates within a retinal neural circuit. The cellular origin and mechanism of directional selectivity were investigated by selectively eliminating retinal starburst amacrine cells, using immunotoxin-mediated cell targeting techniques. Starburst cell ablation in the adult retina abolished not only directional selectivity of ganglion cell responses but also an optokinetic eye reflex derived by stimulus movement. Starburst cells therefore serve as the key element that discriminates the direction of stimulus movement through integrative synaptic transmission and play a pivotal role in information processing that stabilizes image motion.  相似文献

An optoelectronic device able to change the gain of the retinal feedback path from its natural value (?1) to any other value in the range ?5, +5 is presented. The employement of an image-converter tube with coupled magnetic deflection circuit allows a large variety of targets to be used. Any type of artificial movements, moreover, can be imposed to the target itself. The device can be driven by any eye movement detector able to transduce the horizontal and vertical components of the eye rotation in the form of electrical signals. Experiments were performed to investigate the effects of varying the gain of the retinal feedback loop on the eye behaviour. Evidence was found for the existence of a range of values of such gain where the eye goes into spontaneous smooth sinusoidal-like oscillations. This phenomenon was examined with the control theory methods in terms of stability of the pursuit system. A correlation between the spontaneous oscillations and the well known learning capability of the visual system was found.  相似文献

(1) The fluid properties of air and water enable animals to orientate to flow and this behaviour in water is termed rheotaxis. Fish, however, have a wide range of responses to currents, extending beyond simple orientation, and the term rheotropism is therefore used as a ‘portmanteau’ word to describe all such reactions. (2) Fish detect currents directly by flow over the body surface or indirectly by other stimuli. Indirect responses are more common and occur in response to visual, tactile and inertial stimuli resulting from displacement of the fish by the current. Reactions to displacement of visual images are called optomotor reactions. The lateral line is not involved except in the detection of small localized jets of water. It has not been demonstrated that any fish can detect the current by electrical stimuli, although it is theoretically possible for some to do so. (3) In the basic form of rhotaxis the fish heads upstream and maintains station by stemming the current. Current detection thresholds fall within the range 0.4 to 10 cm/s for tactile stimuli but may be as low as 0.03 cm/s for visual stimuli. (4) Visual responses have been studied by simulating displacement by the current in optomotor apparatus. Fish respond to a rotating black-and-white-striped background by compensatory movements of the head and eyes - optokinetic nystagmus - or by the optomotor reaction, in which the fish swims with the background. (5) Fish show an orthokinesis in optomotor apparatus, their mean swimming speed increasing with the speed of rotation of the background. The precise form of the relationship varies between species and there is also considerable individual variation in performance. Fish accelerate and decelerate relative to the background, fixating on a particular stripe for short periods. (6) Factors limiting the appearance of the optomotor response are contrast, illuminance, acuity, critical flicker fusion frequency and spectral sensitivity. (7) Fish tolerate retinal image movements equivalent to those received when they are carried forwards by the current but not to those received when they are carried backwards. There are ganglion cells in the optic tectum which are sensitive to the direction of movement of targets across the visual field. In the goldfish there are significantly more units sensitive to movements in the temporo-nasal than in the opposite direction. (8) There are close parallels between the behaviour of fish in schools and in an optomotor apparatus. The optomotor response is apparently innate, occurring in newly hatched fry. (9) Physical and chemical factors can modify rheotaxis. Temperature and olfactory stimuli affect both the sign of the taxis and the kinetic component of the behaviour. (10) Thyroid hormones which are involved in the control of migration have been shown to affect the kinetic component of rheotaxis. (11) Fish show a number of hydrodynamic adaptations to life in currents. Morphological modifications are greatest in fish from torrential streams, which show extreme dorsoventral flattening and have specialized adhesive organs. Other fish select areas of low velocity or decrease their buoyancy with increasing current speed. (12) Rheotropic behaviour plays an important role in the distribution of fish within stream systems, in the maintenance of territory and station and in feeding behaviour. Territory, station and spawning sites in salmonids are all selected in relation to water velocity. (13) Water currents are thought to provide either a transport system or directional clues for fish on migration. The fish either does not respond to the current and is carried passively downstream, or it makes an orientated movement, swimming up- or downstream. (14) Eggs and larvae are known to drift passively downstream from their spawning grounds and some adult fish may also drift passively. In the sea both adult and juvenile fish use a form of modulated drift associated with vertical migration. Fish move up into midwater either by direct tidal selection or in relation to the diel cycle of illuminance. In fresh water the downstream migrations of salmonid fry, and smolts under some conditions, occur by modulated drift. (15) There is no evidence that fish migrating in the sea orientate to the current, but in fresh water the upstream migrations of diadromous fish are clearly orientated movements. (16) Water velocity is a major factor for salmonids migrating upstream. For fry it limits the occurrence of upstream migrations and for adults it can also prevent upstream movement. But migrations are often initiated by freshets, and changing water velocity is thought to be the most important factor associated with a freshet. (17) Both environmental and genetic factors affect the direction of migration in relation to the current. In some sockeye salmon fry direction is determined by temperature, but in others the overall direction of movement is genetically determined and environmental factors only modify the behaviour. (18) Rheotropic behaviour has a number of important practical applications in the capture of fish and in guiding them past dams and power stations. (19) The optomotor response plays a basic role in the capture of roundfish by trawls under conditions when the fish can see the gear. Many fish are caught because they become fatigued after a prolonged period of swimming at the same speed as the trawl. (20) Most success in guiding fish away from hazardous areas and bypassing them round dams has been achieved with mechanical barriers which depend on rheotropic reactions of the fish. (21) Louvre screens are very successful in deflecting juvenile salmonids migrating downstream past small dams but are impracticable at large dams. Instead, the turbine intakes are commonly sited at a considerable depth and fish are bypassed by mechanical screens either at the surface of the forebay or into the gatewells immediately upstream of the turbine intakes. (22) With upstream migrants the basic problem is to attract fish to the lower end of the fishways. An adequate ‘attraction velocity’ is an important feature of fishways, which must be sited so that the fish avoid the high velocity discharges from spillways and turbines.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The horizontal motion-detecting system controlling optomotor head-turning behaviour in honeybees, Apis mellifera , was found to be partitioned into two separate subsystems. Each subsystem is direction-specific such that visual stimulation in the preferred direction elicited a high level of responses that correcly followed the movement, whereas stimulation in the non-preferred direction resulted in response levels comparable to or lower than those for blinded controls. The results indicate that medial eye regions are specialized for the detection of posterior-to-anterior movements and lateral regions are specialized for detecting anterior-to-posterior motion. A model suggesting possible neural correlates for this functional subdivision of the optomotor response is proposed.  相似文献

Retinal hemodynamics can be quantified from videoangiographic image sequences by digital image processing. Intensity changes of dye dilution curves provide dynamics parameters of the local retinal blood flow. The measuring points of dye dilution curves have to be fixed on identical image contents in each image of a complete image sequence. To obtain measurements for every pixel on the retinal surface a motion-compensated image sequence is required. A new method adapted to the compensation of eye motion and movement artifacts in Scanning Laser Ophthalmoscopy in long image sequences (300-500 images) is presented in this paper. To inhibit error propagation of time sequential motion estimation, the eye movement is divided into two dynamic movements components. The method presented permits compensation for eye motion in retinal fluorescein angiographic sequences. Owing to the short calculation times, this algorithm can be used in clinical routine.  相似文献
