The genus Lantana has many species complexes, and L. camara is one of the aggressive alien weedy species complexes; species delimitation in these complexes is a nightmare for taxonomists. We examined the diversity in the chemical composition of foliar essential oils among morphotypes of Lantana species complexes inhabiting the same ecological gradient, and its taxonomic and ecological significance. The yields of essential oils varied from 0.1 to 0.79% in foliar hydrodistillates of eleven morphotypes, and a total of 39 chemical constituents were detected by GC/MS. The quantitative and qualitative variability in the composition of essential oils among morphotypes was very high, and hence they represent chemotypes. The diversity observed in the composition of essential oils appears to be of genetic origin and thus of taxonomic value. The formation of distinct clusters and sub‐clusters at high distance cluster combine values also substantiates that the patterns of distribution of chemical constituents among morphotypes can be used in delimiting species and infraspecific taxa within the species complexes. The presence of β‐caryophyllene and other such compounds, which are known to prevent herbivory, in morphotypes of Lantana species complexes suggest that these compounds may provide selective advantage to Lantana over native species in the invasion of new and disturbed habitats.  相似文献

Morphological variability in gorgonians is frequent and commonly associated with habitat variability, often resulting in segregated morphotypes. Paramuricea macrospina is an endemic Mediterranean gorgonian species found on rocky bottoms between 40 and 160?m depth and has recently been reported as one of the most abundant species in continental shelf and shelf edge environments. Three different chromatic forms of P. macrospina were observed in the Menorca Channel: a yellow form and a light purple form occurring on maërl beds of the continental shelf, and a dark purple form occurring on rocky substrates of the shelf edge. The objective of the present work is to verify if these P. macrospina forms may represent distinct taxonomic units by analysing differences in colony morphology and sclerite size and shape of the three chromatic forms. No significant differences were found in colony shape, suggesting that environmental variability between the continental shelf and the shelf edge is not influential enough to significantly alter colony morphology. Significant differences in sclerite size and shape were found amongst all forms, suggesting that sclerites may be influenced by environmental conditions. However, the co-occurrence of the yellow and light purple forms side by side on the continental shelf may indicate a certain degree of genetic differentiation.  相似文献

A species complex in Spirogyra consists of the series of filament morphotypes of various ploidal levels arising from an original morphotype within a clonal culture or in nature. A clonal culture of filaments identified as Spirogyra maxima (Hassall) Kützing produced several morphotypes, i.e. filament types of distinctly different widths and ploidal levels. Banding patterns and satellites were visible on chromosomes stained at mitotic prophase and metaphase. The original culture of S. maxima contained filaments averaging 127 μ wide. Vegetative cells of the original culture contained six large chromosomes (>4 μ long), identifiable as three distinct pairs based on banding patterns and presence of satellites: (1) one pair of short chromosomes (ca. 5.0 μ); (2) one pair of long chromosomes (ca. 8.0 μm); and (3) a second pair of long chromosomes (ca. 9.0 μm) including a nucleolar organizing region and satellite. A larger morphotype averaging 175 μm in width contained 12 chromosomes, with two pairs of short chromosomes and four pairs of long chromosomes (satellites were usually indistinct). Aneuploid chromosome numbers ranging from 5 to 13 were observed in a few cells. Binucleate and trinucleate cells were also observed. A twobanded chromosome fragment was observed in a few cells with 6 chromosomes and a few cells with 12 chromosomes. The variety of morphotypes derived in this study could be identified as four different species of Spirogyra by conventional taxonomic criteria. The banding patterns and satellites on chromosomes suggest that three pairs of homologous chromosomes are present in filaments of the original clonal culture and that these filaments are themselves autopolyploid (diploid) descendants of ancestral form with a base chromosome number of x = 3.  相似文献

Advanced third-stage larvae of Gnathostoma sp. corresponding to 6 morphotypes, distinguished on the basis of the shape of the cephalic hooklets, were collected from the muscle tissue of 5 species of freshwater fish (i.e., Dormitator latifrons, Eleotris picta, Gobiomorus maculatus, Ariopsis guatemalensis, and Cichlasoma trimaculatum) in Tres Palos Lagoon, Guerrero, Mexico. Principal components analysis of 4 morphological characters cluster all samples in a single taxonomic group. A minimum amount of variation was observed among ITS2 sequences of 3 morphotypes and Gnathostoma binucleatum obtained from GenBank (0-0.84%). The observed variation among morphotypes 1, 2, and 3 is the result of intraspecific variability of G. binucleatum supported by morphology and DNA. Morphotypes 4, 5, and 6 belong to the same taxon on the basis of morphology of the hooklets only. For an accurate morphological diagnosis of the causative agent of gnathostomiasis, it is necessary to develop similar studies with other species of the genus.  相似文献

In the present study, taxonomic potential of opal phytoliths was examined in grasses from lower Gangetic delta, West Bengal, India. The study revealed that finer classification of phytoliths can increase the efficacy of opal silica as taxonomic proxy by minimizing the influences of multiplicity and redundancy. We isolated 187 phytolith sub‐morphotypes, categorized under 10 major groups, from 110 grass species belonging to 45 genera, 21 sub‐tribes, 13 tribes and 7 subfamilies. Cluster and correspondence analyses showed that all the significantly represented subfamilies can be clearly distinguished on the basis of either principal morphotypes or sub‐morphotypes. However, genus/species level discrimination may only be possible by deploying phytolith based identification key developed by utilizing detailed grass phytolith micro‐morphometry and frequency attributes. We conclude that grass phytolith characteristics provide useful and significant information for distinguishing grass taxa of deltaic West Bengal.  相似文献

Intraspecies variability is widespread in marine invertebrates. Size, colour, texture, general shape and secondary chemistry can differ quite drastically from one individual to another. Cystodytes dellechiajei (Polycitoridae) is a cosmopolitan colonial ascidian with several morphotypes, most of which differ in colour and spicular composition. New molecular tools enable us to assess the taxonomic status of these morphotypes. To determine whether variation observed in Mediterranean Cystodytes has a genetic basis, we sequenced 45 specimens from eight locations of the western Mediterranean and one from Mayotte (Indian Ocean), and obtained a 617 bp fragment of the mitochondrial gene COI. Fifteen different colour morphs were recorded and four kinds of spicules were found: disk-shaped, sphere-shaped, star-shaped and discoidal, thick spicules with a toothed margin. Zooid morphology was remarkably uniform in the whole sample set. Different tree construction methods (distance-based, parsimony-based, and maximum-likelihood-based) yielded consistent results, and recognized six major clades, which had no correspondence with spicule shape and were only partially consistent with colour morphs. Results are discussed in the light of previous knowledge of the chemistry of blue, green, brown and purple colour morphs. In spite of the different colour patterns and spicular variability we concluded, on the basis of chemical and genetic data, that the morphological traits analysed were not consistent enough to be used to differentiate between Cystodytes species. We point out the importance of genetics and chemistry in assessing the taxonomic status of species with variable morphology.  相似文献

Based on an analysis of variability, morphotypes are recognized for B. striata and B. jusupovi, and patterns in the changes of characters are established. The realization that coral reef ecosystem management must occur across multiple spatial scales and habitat types has led scientists and resource managers to seek variables that are easily measured over large areas and correlate well with reef resources. Here we investigate the utility of new technology in airborne laser surveying (NASA Experimental Advanced Airborne Research Lidar (EAARL)) in assessing topographical complexity (rugosity) to predict reef fish community structure on shallow (<10 m deep) patch reefs. Marine portions of Biscayne National Park, Florida, USA, were surveyed remotely using the EAARL, and reef fish populations were visually surveyed on 10 patch reefs at independent, randomly selected stations (n = 10–13 per reef). Rugosity at each station was assessed in situ by divers using the traditional chain-transect method (10-m scale), and remotely using the EAARL submarine topography data at multiple spatial scales (2, 5, and 10 m). The rugosity and biological datasets were analyzed together to elucidate the predictive power of EAARL rugosity in describing the variance in reef fish community variables and to assess the correlation between chain-transect and EAARL rugosity. EAARL rugosity was not well correlated with chain-transect rugosity, or with species richness of fishes (although statistically significant, the amount of variance explained by the model was very low). Variance in reef fish community attributes was better explained in reef-by-reef variability than by physical variables. However, once the reef-by-reef variability was taken into account in a two-way analysis of variance, the importance of rugosity could be seen on individual reefs. Fish species richness and abundance were statistically higher at high rugosity stations compared to medium and low rugosity stations, as predicted by prior ecological research. The EAARL shows promise as an important mapping tool for reef resource managers as they strive to inventory and protect coral reef resources.  相似文献

Hair morphology was exammed on developing seedlings and mature plants of ten species from five of seven series inPhysalis. The taxonomic importance of hair development and the distribution of hair types then was evaluated with respect to other comparative data. Two classes of hair types were observed, as found in earlier investigations ofSolanum andRhododendron. The first hair class comprises a sequence from unbranched hairs to dendroid-stelliform hairs. Hairs of this class show considerable variability among taxa in size, presence or absence of glandular tips, and presence and degree of branching, and so were useful in making taxonomic comparisons. The second hair class consists of short hairs, each tipped with a multicellular gland. This second hair class was not useful taxonomically because of its lack of variability in morphology and its often rare occurrence on a plant. The taxa studied exhibit distinctive trichome features which serve to distinguish series and, in some cases together with other data, provided new insight into previously enigmatic species relationships.  相似文献

Human head lice (Anoplura: Pediculidae: Pediculus) are pandemic, parasitizing countless school children worldwide due to the evolution of insecticide resistance, and human body (clothing) lice are responsible for the deaths of millions as a result of vectoring several deadly bacterial pathogens. Despite the obvious impact these lice have had on their human hosts, it is unclear whether head and body lice represent two morphological forms of a single species or two distinct species. To assess the taxonomic status of head and body lice, we provide a synthesis of publicly available molecular data in GenBank, and we compare phylogenetic and population genetic methods using the most diverse geographic and molecular sampling presently available. Our analyses find reticulated networks, gene flow, and a lack of reciprocal monophyly, all of which indicate that head and body lice do not represent genetically distinct evolutionary units. Based on these findings, as well as inconsistencies of morphological, behavioral, and ecological variability between head and body lice, we contend that no known species concept would recognize these louse morphotypes as separate species. We recommend recognizing head and body lice as morphotypes of a single species, Pediculus humanus, until compelling new data and analyses (preferably analyses of fast evolving nuclear markers in a coalescent framework) indicate otherwise.  相似文献

The control of triatomine insects is necessary because these insects are the principal vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi, the agent of Chagas disease. Nevertheless, some of these vectors, such as Triatoma protracta, have not been studied adequately and their importance and taxonomic status has not yet been defined in detail and must be reevaluated in view of the continuing taxonomic uncertainties associated with the species. To help clarify the taxonomic status of T. protracta, the eggs and genital plates of two morphotypes were analyzed. Qualitative and quantitative morphological differences were observed in two morphotypes, designated T. p. protracta and T. p. nahuatlae according to Ryckman (1962). The morphotype T. p. protracta exhibited large and wide eggs with pores forming large padded polygonal structures, whereas the eggs of the morphotype T. p. nahuatlae were small and smooth. The size of the 9(th) genital urosternite was longer and wider in females in contrast to males in both morphotypes. However, these size differences were relatively greater in T. p. protracta. The high morphological variation found between the morphotypes of T. protracta suggests that they should be separated. Accordingly, it is probable that this group should be re-classified.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of comprehensive analyses concerning the phenotypic variability of the primary thallus in five chosen Cladonia species in relation to habitat conditions. Morphology and anatomy, as well as the cortex ultrasculpture, of primary squamules were examined in individual specimens from sunny and shady populations of each species. The Mann-Whitney U test and Principal Component Analysis (PCA) revealed several clear correlations between the type of habitat and the organisation of squamules. Significant differences refer mainly to anatomical features, especially to epinecral layer frequency and cortex thickness. On the contrary, examination of the surface ultrasculpture of squamules under SEM did not show any important differences between populations. Regardless of the habitat factors, a full range of cortical surface rugosity in samples from both habitats was noticed, and a high variability often refers to a singular squamule. The results indicate that some features are largely modified by environmental factors and/or depend on the development stage of individual specimens, and examination of these relationships should be the first step towards the evaluation of the taxonomic usefulness of the considered features.  相似文献

The 15 species studied have chromosome numbers predominantly based onx=8, and intraspecific polyploidy is frequent. The numbersx=13 andx=18 in two species are hypothesized to represent dibasic alloploidy rather than aneuploidy. The group forms a hybrid complex, with 11 basic diploids thus far discovered and with much morphological variation observed among species at the hexaploid and higher polyploid levels. Both alloploidy and introgression probably contribute to this pattern of variability. The known diploids are assigned to eight species, with the suggestion that further taxonomic division may be warranted as the group becomes better known. Seven recognized species exist only as polyploids. Because of their reticulate relationships, the polyploid populations form an extensively intergading series of morphological types. It is cautioned that excessive taxonomic splitting, based on minor polyploid variants, might lead to an unwieldy and impractical classification for the group.  相似文献

Cylindrospermopsis raciborskii Woloszynska is a prominent constituent of a number of water bodies in northern Australia. In Solomon Dam, this species occurs as two distinct morphological forms, one with straight trichomes and one with coiled trichomes. Isolates of the two forms have been grown in pure culture and have been shown to maintain their respective characteristic form over successive generations. Both forms were similar with respect to cylindrospermopsin content expressed as a percentage of freeze-dried culture material, ranging from 0.14% to 0.20%, depending on the N source provided in the medium. A morphological comparison between natural populations of the two forms showed significant differences in vegetative, heterocyst, and akinete cell dimensions. These characteristics are the primary taxonomic criteria at the species level in this genus. In culture, the coiled form grew slightly faster than the straight form over the range of conditions investigated in this study. The coiled form was better suited to growth under low-light conditions. These clear and consistent morphological and physiological differences contrast with the 99.8% similarity between the two forms in their 16S rRNA gene nucleotide sequences. It is concluded that although taxonomic separation of the two forms at the species level might not be warranted, the two strains investigated are clearly distinct morphotypes, and it is recommended that they be so recorded in monitoring programs.  相似文献

We studied two Corbicula morphotypes in a syntopic population in the Rhine River in order to reveal their taxonomic, reproductive and phylogenetic relationship, using morphometrics, DAF‐fingerprinting, mitochondrial COI and nuclear ITS1 sequence variation. Morphometric analysis showed that two statistically distinguishable morphotypes with few intermediates were present.Mitochondrial sequence analysis detected two divergent clades. DAF‐fingerprinting revealed three highly distinctive multilocus genotypes. Two of the multilocus genotypes were significantly associated with different morphotypes and mitochondrial lineages. The third genotype B, however, was found in both morphotypes, intermediates and mitochondrial lineages. Conclusive evidence for hybridization came from RFLP analysis of the nuclear ITS1 locus. We interpret the hybrids as F1 hybrids between different evolutionary lineages. Integration of Corbicula sequences from all over the world into Maximum Parsimony analysis suggested a simultaneous radiation resulting in several evolutionary lineages whose species status remained doubtful. An unequivocal taxonomic assignment of the two evolutionary lineages in the Rhine population was therefore not possible.  相似文献

Multiple, sympatric morphotypes of rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax) are known in Lake Utopia, New Brunswick. The largest, ‘giant’ form is predominantly a piscivore, the smaller, ‘dwarf’ form are predominantly planktivores, and there is an intermediate body-sized form. The forms exhibit some genetic variability, but it is body size that best defines morphotypes, trophic status, and spawning behaviour. We compared egg size, spawning date, incubation time, size at hatching, and daily and annual growth to determine when divergence in body size occurs among morphotypes. Giant form larvae hatched earlier and grew faster during their first year. Dwarf and intermediate form larvae displayed inter-annual variability in degree of overlap and divergence in growth which occurred in their first growing season or at age 1+ or 2+. We conclude that earlier hatching, early growth trajectories, and later niche shifting are linked to the persistence of morphotypes, i.e., the process is controlled by the environment and sustained to some degree by spawning segregation.  相似文献
