Mathematical models are developed in order to analyze whether or not social factors, such as, for example, the “social fence” (J. B. Hestbeck, 1982, Oikos 39, 157–163) will stabilize population density: the dynamic interaction between social factors and (dynamic) trophic factors is analyzed. It is concluded that social factors such as the “social fence” tend to stabilize population density; hence, if density cycles (as, e.g., seen in many microtine rodents) are observed in nature, it seems reasonable to conclude that density cycles are driven by, for example, trophic interactions and not by social factors. It is suggested that the “social fence” may explain why so many populations including several microtine populations have fairly stable densities despite the ever-existing destabilizing trophic interactions. Contrary to what is implied by J. B. Hestbeck (1983, “A Mathematical Model of Population Regulation in Cyclic Mammals,” Lecture notes in biomathematics, Vol. 52, Springer-Verlag, Berlin/New York), the analysis presented in this paper demonstrates that seasonal environmental changes are not essential for the generation of regular density cycles. Seasonal changes may, however, be necessary for generating a microtine-like density cycle. Empirical information on microtine rodents relating to the “social fence hypothesis” is discussed.  相似文献

The “Microtitre” Fluctuation test recently introduced for the detection of direct mutagens has been adapted for the detection of indirect mutagens through the incorporation of an “S9-mix” metabolic system. It compares favourably with Greens' original method for the detection of a range of chemical mutagens.

The technique has been employed in the evaluation of mixed enzyme induction using phenobarbitone and β-naphthoflavone (benzoflavone). as a safe substitute for Aroclor-1254. The post-mitochondrial preparations from rats induced with the combined inducers had a similar “metabolic competence” to those derived from Aroclor induced animals. Such a combination would therefore provide a useful alternative to Aroclor-1254 for routine screening.

It was found that the level of “S9” present in the metabolic system greatly affected the quantitative mutagenic response. This varied considerably from chemical to chemical and underlined the need for such preliminary investigations in routine screening.  相似文献

There are many indications and much practical knowledge about the different tasks which various breeds of dogs are selected for. Correspondingly these different breeds are known to possess different physical and mental abilities. We hypothesized that commonly kept breeds will show differences in their problem solving ability in a detour task around a V-shaped fence, and also, that breed differences will affect their learning ability from a human demonstrator, who demonstrates a detour around the fence. Subjects were recruited in Hungarian pet dog schools. We compared the results of the 10 most common breeds in our sample when they were tested in the detour task without human demonstration. There was no significant difference between the latencies of detour, however, there was a trend that German Shepherd dogs were the quickest and Giant Schnauzers were the slowest in this test. For testing the social learning ability of dogs we formed three breed groups (“utility”, “shepherd” and “hunting”). There were no significant differences between these, all the breed groups learned equally well from the human demonstrator. However, we found that dogs belonging to the “shepherd” group looked back more frequently to their owner than the dogs in the “hunting” group. Further, we have found that the age of pet dogs did not affect their social learning ability in the detour task. Our results showed that the pet status of a dog has probably a stronger effect on its cognitive performance and human related behaviour than its age or breed. These results emphasize that socialization and common activities with the dog might overcome the possible breed differences, if we give the dogs common problem solving, or social learning tasks.  相似文献

Subtle contextual social cues and the explicit incentive structure of social dilemmas are two important, but fundamentally different classes of determinants of cooperative behavior. The former provides subjective social information regarding the likelihood of attaining mutual cooperation by shaping one's expectations of the cooperative behavior of the interacting party. The latter provides objective, ecological information about the strategic opportunities offered by the situation. In prior research, both classes have generally been studied in isolation, hampering insight into how social judgments and ecological opportunities interact in shaping cooperation. To fill in this gap we set up a repeated mixed-motive game in which we manipulate subtle social cues and the incentive structure of the game simultaneously. We develop the hypothesis that social information is less important in shaping mutual cooperation of two team members when the incentive structure is such that it contains natural synergies. In contrast, when the incentive structure offers no synergy, “rational contracting” is hampered and social cues are essential for mutual cooperation to develop. The evidence we present in this paper is consistent with this hypothesis.  相似文献

At present the division of the factors influencing staining into those supporting a chemical mechanism or those supporting what is known as “adsorption” mechanism is questioned because the latter term cannot be definitely defined from general usage. In this paper the nature of adsorption is discussed. Data indicating definitely a chemical mechanism are not directly considered; but in many cases often cited by other writers as necessitating a non-chemical mechanism, the validity of such mechanism is questioned.  相似文献

An analysis of eating habits in older retired subjects (“No Work group”) and younger subjects employed in full-time work (“Work group”) has been carried out. It used a questionnaire that assessed why individuals chose to eat or not to eat meals during the course of the day, and subjective responses to the meals. The questionnaire was answered every three hours over a “typical week” which, for the Work group, entailed working during the weekdays and resting at the weekend. For the “No Work” group, breakfast was the most frequently taken meal of the day whereas, for the “Work” group, this meal was often missed. Patterns of meal intake were not significantly different between the weekdays and weekend for the “No Work” group, but the “Work” group ate more hot food at the weekend. The reasons cited for eating/not eating a meal and for choosing the type of meal eaten were dominated by hunger/lack of hunger in both groups. In addition, whereas habits were also important for the “No Work” group, it was time availability or the lack of it that was of major importance to the Work group, though this was significantly less important at the weekend. Meals which required more time for preparation and cooking were appreciated significantly more (appetite before the meal, enjoyment during it, and satiety afterwards) than meals such as snacks and cold food, which could be prepared more quickly. Some implications of these results, with regard to regular meals acting as a social zeitgeber in older subjects and the additional constraints imposed upon night workers, are considered.  相似文献

Idealistic morphology as perhaps the most important historical manifestation of typology is very suitable for a historical analysis of Ernst Mayr's “Essentialism Story”, which postulates an antagonism between “typological thinking” and “population thinking”. We show that German-language idealistic-morphological theories consisted of two clearly distinguishable parts. The cornerstone of these theories was the concept of the type as an abstract pattern representing a certain class of phenomena and embodying the norm of this class. The primary objective of pure typology was to create a non-phylogenetic classification system for living organisms based on structurally explicable characters. Thus, typology, as a non-phylogenetic foundation of idealistic morphology, was conceptually neutral with respect to hypotheses of evolutionary mechanisms. Typology was often accompanied by concepts such as Lamarckism, orthogenesis, creationism, essentialism, etc. These peripheral (with respect to pure typology) concepts were autonomous constructions and did not represent a direct logical consequence of typology. In our view “population thinking”, as part of the Darwinian theory of evolutionary mechanism, could not be directly opposed to “typological thinking”. Rather, it was peripheral concepts such as essentialism or creationism that led to conflicts between the Modern Synthesis and idealistic morphology.  相似文献

Many colonies of the North American ant Crematogaster smithi contain a “third female caste” in addition to queens and workers. These “intermorphs” are morphological intermediate of queens and workers and have well-developed ovaries but lack a spermatheca for the storage of sperm. They are specialised for laying large numbers of unfertilised, viable eggs, most of which serve as food for larvae and adults, though a few may eventually develop into males. Based on the assumption that cuticular hydrocarbons (CHCs) in social insects honestly signal the reproductive status of an individual we investigated the CHC of mated mature queens, virgin queens, intermorphs and workers. We expected intermorphs to show chemical profiles intermediate between those of mated queens and non-reproductive workers. A discriminant analysis of the chemical profiles reliably separated queens, virgin queens, and workers, but failed to distinguish between queens and intermorphs even though workers were apparently capable of doing so.  相似文献

We propose to designate by the term “live memory” of the cell, the cytoplasmic memory. This phenomenon consists of non-genetic memory, but nevertheless includes transmission function, which may be “hereditary” via the ovum, from mother cell to daughter cell, or simply within the same cell from instant t to instant t + 1. To understand this notion of “live memory”, its role and interactions with DNA must be resituated; indeed, operational information belongs as much to the cell body and to its cytoplasmic regulatory protein components and other endogenous or exogenous ligands as it does to the DNA database. We will see in Section 2, using examples from recent experiments in biology, the principal roles of “live memory” in relation to the four aspects of cellular identity, memory of form, hereditary transmission and also working memory.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to examine the mechanisms of estrogen receptor (ER) processing and replenishment in the uterus of ovariectomized rats after estradiol and progesterone treatment. Uterine ER binding activity, ER protein and ER mRNA were measured by receptor binding exchange assay, Western blot and slot blot, respectively. The regulation of ER levels in rat uterus by estradiol and progesterone was very dramatic. Changes in ER protein were faithfully reflected by changes in binding activity. Estradiol caused receptor “processing” within 4 h of administration followed by recovery or “replenishment” of ER levels to the initial level by 20 h. The term “processing” has previously been used to describe the loss of ER binding activity in the early phase of estradiol-action, but it was never clear whether the ligand binding site was inactivated by processing or if the receptor molecule actually disappeared. This study shows that receptor “processing” constitutes disappearance of receptor protein and the later “replenishment” phase represents new ER protein rather than recycling of “processed” receptor. Progesterone-action, on the other hand, influenced only the “replenishment” phase by blocking recovery of ER protein. ER mRNA was suppressed by estradiol at 8 h, after the receptor was “processed” and “replenishment” already initiated. Progesterone, on the other hand, did not alter the steady state level of the message. Other mechanisms, such as regulation of translation rate of existing mRNA and changes in the rate of degradation of ER proteins are more likely involved in acute regulation of ER by these ovarian steroid hormones.  相似文献

Social exchange and reciprocity: confusion or a heuristic?   总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3  
We propose that a “social exchange heuristic” is as important as the cheater detection mechanism for attaining mutual cooperation in social exchange. The social exchange heuristic prompts people to perceive a mixed-motive situation, such as the Prisoner's Dilemma (PD), as an Assurance Game (AG) situation in which cooperation is a personally better choice than defection insofar as the partner is cooperating as well. We demonstrate the operation of the social exchange heuristic through a comparison of the ordinary one-shot, simultaneous PD with the one-shot, sequential PD. Participants in the current experiments, involving a total of 261 volunteers, committed a logical error in the direction of favoring mutual cooperation as the situation involved more serious consequences. This result strongly suggests the operation of a domain specific “bias” that encourages pursuit of mutual cooperation in social exchange.  相似文献

Herbivory and resource interact to influence plant regrowth following grazing, but few detailed investigations on grazing tolerance at population levels are available. We conducted two pot experiments along a simulated grazing gradient (0%, 25%, 50% and 75% of shoot removal) at three water or nutrient levels to determine the interaction of resource and herbivory on Leymus chinensis, a perennial, dominant species in the eastern Eurasian steppes. Interactions between water availability and clipping intensity on the relative height growth rate (RHGR) and bud number were significant. Significant interactions between nutrient and clipping on RHGR, total biomass and specific leaf area (SLA) were also found. Total biomass and bud number, showing a unimodal curve along the clipping gradient in resource-rich environments, were highest at light clipping level, suggesting that this species has the plastic compensatory responses from under- to overcompensation. Interactions between herbivory and water or nutrient were opposite to each other. The “cooperative” interactions between water and herbivory magnified the difference in grazing tolerance of L. chinensis between high and low water treatments. The “antagonistic” interactions between nutrient and herbivory, on the other hand, were reflected in the lower tolerance to heavy clipping in the high nutrient than low nutrient treatments. Results partly support the limiting resource model (LRM). A modified and simplified graphic model of the LRM was proposed based on our results. The new LRM clearly demonstrated that “cooperative” interactions between varying water levels and clipping intensities aggravate the detrimental impacts of herbivores on plant growth and reproduction, whereas “antagonistic” interactions between nutrient and grazing alleviate the negative effects of herbivores. Biomass compensation and density compensation were identified as main mechanisms of herbivory tolerance in this clonal species.  相似文献

The early development of sleep-wake and food-intake rhythms in human infants is reviewed. The development of a 24h day-night rhythm contains two observable developmental processes: the alterations in the periodic structure of behavior (decreased ultradian, increased circadian components) and the process of synchronization to external time (entrainment). The authors present the results of their studies involving 26 German children and compare them with previous investigations. In their research, it became evident that, during the first weeks of life, the time pattern of sleep-wake and food-intake behavior is characterized by different ultradian periodicities, ranging from 2h to 8h. In the course of further ontogenesis, the share of ultradian rhythms in the sleep-wake behavior decreases, while it remains dominant for food-intake behavior. The circadian component is established as early as the first weeks of life and increases in the months that follow. Besides, the authors' study supports the notion of broad interindividual variation in ultradian rhythms and in the development of a day-night rhythm. Examples of free-running rhythms of sleep-wake and food-intake behavior by various authors are strong indicators of the endogenous nature of the circadian rhythms in infants and show that the internal clock is already functioning at birth. It is still uncertain when the process of synchronization to external and social time cues begins and how differences in the maturation of perceptive organs affect the importance of time cues for the entrainment. Prepartally, the physiological maternal entrainment factors and mother-fetus interactions may be most important; during the first weeks of life, the social time cues gain importance, while light acts as a dominant “zeitgeber” at a later time only.  相似文献

A recent innovation in paleobotanical studies of the Cretaceous has been the use of bulk sediment disaggregation and sieving techniques. This approach has identified numerous Cretaceous floras that contain well-preserved plant fossil debris (“mesofloras”), and many of these have yielded abundant fossil angiosperm flowers, as well as angiosperm fruits, seeds and dispersed stamens. On the Atlantic Coastal Plain of eastern North America recent research has identified a new series of fossil floras of Campanian age from central Georgia. These form part of a rich sequence of mesofloras that range in age from early Aptian (or perhaps late Barremian) to Campanian. Detailed studies of fossil flowers from these floras have clarified the systematic relationships of Cretaceous angiosperms and identified source plants of several characteristic dispersed angiosperm pollen grains. Taxa referable to extant angiosperm families appear suddenly in the Albian and Cenomanian, and the number of extant angiosperm families that can be recognized increases rapidly through the Late Cretaceous. Based on the record of Cretaceous fossil flowers, “modernization” of angiosperm lineages occurred much earlier than had been inferred previously from studies of dispersed fossil pollen. Major extinct monophyletic “higher” taxa of Cretaceous angiosperms have not yet been recognized.  相似文献

In their monograph (1), Healy and Waterhouse quite thoughtfully distinguish between the altered shapes of circadian rhythms and their entrainment (synchronization). Although there is a great deal of evidence that various influences can alter the shape of circadian rhythms (“masking”), the literature on multiple time cues (zeitgebers) entraining different pacemakers is less convincing. In humans, evidence for nonphotic (social and activity-rest cycle) zeitgebers is restricted to human studies of anchor sleep (2), to data from Wever (3) and Czeisler (4) and to animal studies by Mrosovksy (5) and Turek (6). Until proven otherwise, it seems most likely that social cues primarily affect the sleep-wake cycle (activity-rest cycle), which- being loosely coupled to the endogenous circadian pacemaker-can be dissociated from it and the overt rhythms that are driven by it.  相似文献

Normal mitochondrial respiration is associated with a continuous production of superoxide and hydrogen peroxide, inevitably resulting in minor macromolecular damage. Damaged cellular components are not completely turned over by autophagy and other cellular repair systems, leading to a progressive age-related accumulation of biological “garbage” material, such as defective mitochondria, cytoplasmic protein aggregates and an intralysosomal undegradable material, lipofuscin. These changes primarily affect neurons, cardiac myocytes and other long-lived postmitotic cells that neither dilute this “garbage” by mitotic activity, nor are replaced by newly differentiated cells. Defective mitochondria are insufficient in ATP production and often generate increased amounts of reactive oxygen species, further enhancing oxidative stress. Lipofuscin-loaded lysosomes, in turn, poorly turn over mitochondria that gradually leads to the overload of long-lived postmitotic cells with “garbage” material, decreased adaptability and eventual cell death.  相似文献

Extraction of cells with 0.25 N NaCl changes the profile of DNA denaturation in situ. The portion of DNA denaturing at lower temperatures (“thermosensitive” fraction) shows increased sensitivity to heat following salt extraction while the “thermoresistant” DNA fraction is further stabilized. The results suggest that proteins extractable with 0.25 N NaCl while providing local counterions for DNA phosphates of the “thermosensitive” DNA fraction also decrease the strength of DNA-histone interactions within the “thermoresistant” fraction.  相似文献

Connexin43 (Cx43) is a membrane-spanning protein that forms channels that bridge the gap between adjacent cells and this allows for the intercellular exchange of information. Cx43 is regulated by phosphorylation and by interacting proteins. “Mode-1” interaction with 14-3-3 requires phosphorylation of Ser373 on Cx43 (Park et al. 2006). Akt phosphorylates and targets a number of proteins to interactions with 14-3-3. Here we demonstrate that Akt phosphorylates Cx43 on Ser373 and Ser369; antibodies recognizing Akt-phosphorylated sites or phospho-Ser “mode-1” 14-3-3-binding sites recognize a protein from EGF-treated cells that migrates as Cx43, and GST-14-3-3 binds to Cx43 phosphorylated endogenously in EGF-treated cells. Confocal microscopy supports the co-localization of Cx43 with Akt and with 14-3-3 at the outer edges of gap junctional plaques. These data suggest that Akt could target Cx43 to an interaction with 14-3-3 that may play a role in the forward trafficking of Cx43 multimers and/or their incorporation into existing gap junctional plaques.  相似文献

Decolorizers which are distinctly acidic or basic in their chemical nature give abnormally high decolorization in the Gram stain for bacteria. Acidic substances yield more regular results. Ideally an “inert” decolorizer should be used, but ordinarily such substances will not dissolve the dye or dye-mordant precipitate from the smear. The most practical substances seem to be those so very slightly acidic in character as to be practically inert, such as acetone or alcohol, or a mixture of such substances.  相似文献

Background - This paper is a concrete example of the problems raised by the need of constructing the time-qualified reference limits (chronodesms) for blood pressure (BP), in order to clinically estimate the hemodynamic parameter in its intrinsic nychtohemeral variability. Methods - Assuming that the noninvasive ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) is the eligible technique for this need, it must be realized that the BP chronodems may be of two types, depending on the sample being used for their calculation. The first type may be regarded as “ a priori ” because of the fact that they are derived by a sample of normotensive subjects who are unavoidably recruited via “ causal ” sphygmomanometric measurements and reclassified as normotensive by comparing their ABPM to the fixed reference limits (monodesms) given by WHO (monodiagnosis). Therefore, the “ a priori ” BP chonodesms are by principle derived by subjects who could not be correctly classified as normotensive, their ABPM being not tested versus the time-varying physiological limits. The second type may regarded as “ a posteriori ” in virtue of the fact that they may be constructed on a sample which contemplates the previous subjects who result to be true normotensive via the reassessment of their ABPM versus the “ a priori ” BP chronodesms (chronodiagnosis). The “ a posteriori ” chronodesms may be regarded as biometrically reliable, whether the sample for their construction is additionally constituted by those subjects of the local population who have been erroneously monodiagnosed as hypertensive, while they result to be true normotensive via the chronodiagnostic comparison of their ABPM versus the “ a priori ” BP chronodesms. Results - The biometric reliability of the “ a posteriori ” BP chronodems is demonstrated by the fact that their upper limits are statistically significantly less pronounced due to the fact that they are provided by a sample which has been depured by the falsely monodiagnosed normotensives. Conclusions - The “ a posteriori ” BP upper chronodesms are the time-qualified reference limits which should be used in clinical practice for the chronodiagnosis of hypertension.  相似文献
