Purpose

To assess whether macular Bruch´s membrane gets lengthened in axial myopia.

Methods

Using the enhanced depth imaging mode of spectral-domain optical coherence tomography and examining a subgroup of participants of the population-based cross-sectional Beijing Eye Study, we measured the length of Bruch´s membrane (“MacBMLength”) from the fovea to the temporal edge of parapapillary gamma zone, and the distance between the fovea and the temporal optic disc border. Parapapillary gamma zone was defined as the parapapillary region without Bruch´s membrane. We additionally measured ocular biometric parameters and assessed non-ophthalmologic variables.

Results

Measurements of MacBMLength were performed on 322 individuals. MacBMLength (mean: 3.99±0.33 mm; range: 3.17–4.93 mm) was not significantly associated with any systemic parameter or ocular biometric parameter. Gamma zone width (mean: 0.18±0.30mm; range: 0.00–2.61mm) was associated (multivariate analysis; correlation coefficient r:0.80) with longer axial length (P<0.001; standardized correlation coefficient beta: 0.60; non-standardized correlation coefficient B:0.11; 95%CI: 0.09,0.14) and with longer fovea-optic disc border distance (P<0.001; beta:0.28; B:0.19; 95%CI:0.14,0.25), but not with MacBMLength (P = 0.42). Fovea-temporal disc border distance (mean: 4.16±0.44mm; range: 3.17–5.86mm) was associated (overall correlation coefficient: 0.68) with longer axial length (P<0.001; beta: 0.36; B: 0.10; 95%CI: 0.06, 0.13), after adjusting for flatter anterior chamber depth (P = 0.003; beta:-0.14; B:-0.14; 95%CI: -0.23,-0.05) and wider parapapillary gamma zone (P<0.001; beta:0.42; B:0.62; 95%CI:0.44,0.81).

Conclusions

In contrast to parapapillary gamma zone width and fovea-disc border distance, MacBMLength was not significantly associated with axial length. Axial elongation associated increase in fovea-disc distance may predominantly occur through development or elongation of parapapillary gamma zone, while macular Bruch´s membrane may mostly be independent of axial elongation.  相似文献

Summary UsingSchönwetter's data base regression equations are derived expressing egg length and egg breadth as a function of egg mass for Passerines (n=3929) and non-Passerines (n=3217). For both groups these show a variation around the mean which is twice as large for length as for breadth. The average elongation (length/breadth) ist presented for 27 orders ranging from 1.61 in Apterygiformes and Gaviiformes to 1.21 in Strigiformes as well as examples of a few families where elongation increases or decreases as egg mass becomes larger. Egg mass can be estimated from the relationship where egg mass=k(LB2). Mean values, SD, and range of k for both groups are given, but for any particular species are best derived from the dimensions of L, B, and egg mass inSchönwetter's tables.

Length-weight relationships (W = aLb) were estimated for 5 fish species, the pearl stingray Fontitrygon margaritella (Compagno & Roberts, 1984), the West African spadefish Chaetodipterus lippei (Steindachner, 1895), the East Atlantic African spadefish Ephippus goreensis (Cuvier, 1831), the law croaker Pseudotolithus senegallus (Cuvier, 1830) and the Guinean sole Dagetichthys cadenati (Chabanaud, 1948). Fishes were collected during several scientific fishing surveys using purse seine (length 250 m, height 20 m, 14 mm mesh size) and beach seine (180 m length, 9 m height and 25 mm mesh net) conducted from April 1990 to October 2012 in the Sine Saloum estuary, Senegal. They were weighed to the nearest g and measured to the nearest mm (disc width for Fontitrygon margaritella and total length for the 4 other species). The values of parameter b in the LWR equations varied from 3.048 (Chaetodipterus lippei) to 3.274 (Dagetichthys cadenati) and the coefficient of determination (r²) varied between 0.969 (Fontitrygon margaritella) and 0.998 (Chaetodipterus lippei). In addition, new maximum lengths are proposed for Fontitrygon margaritella, Chaetodipterus lippei and Dagetichthys cadenati.  相似文献

The effects of cilium length on the dynamics of cilia motion were investigated by high-speed video microscopy of uniciliated mutants of the swimming alga, Chlamydomonas reinhardtii. Cells with short cilia were obtained by deciliating cells via pH shock and allowing cilia to reassemble for limited times. The frequency of cilia beating was estimated from the motion of the cell body and of the cilium. Key features of the ciliary waveform were quantified from polynomial curves fitted to the cilium in each image frame. Most notably, periodic beating did not emerge until the cilium reached a critical length between 2 and 4 μm. Surprisingly, in cells that exhibited periodic beating, the frequency of beating was similar for all lengths with only a slight decrease in frequency as length increased from 4 μm to the normal length of 10–12 μm. The waveform average curvature (rad/μm) was also conserved as the cilium grew. The mechanical metrics of ciliary propulsion (force, torque, and power) all increased in proportion to length. The mechanical efficiency of beating appeared to be maximal at the normal wild-type length of 10–12 μm. These quantitative features of ciliary behavior illuminate the biophysics of cilia motion and, in future studies, may help distinguish competing hypotheses of the underlying mechanism of oscillation.  相似文献

Stretch induced activation and release induced deactivation of single glycerol-extracted insect flight muscle fibres were investigated. The results are interpreted to indicate that the muscle length controls the number of acting cross bridges, whereas their attachment-detachment kinetics in mainly determined by the state of strain of the cross bridges. It is concluded that the net detachment rate of the cross bridges is enhanced if the muscle is released thereby “unloading” the cross bridges. This behaviour of the unloaded cross bridge is a basic postulation of most of the molecular muscle contraction models.
  1. The delayed tension rise induced by stretches of different amplitudes could be restored to the level before the stretch by a release to the initial length.
  2. The delayed tension decrease induced by a release of moderate (up to δL=1.5% L i)amplitude is quantitatively restored within the delayed increase induced by the restretch to the initial length.
  3. Stiffness, which decreased during the delayed tension drop after release, is restored during a delayed stiffness increase effected by a restretch to the initial length.
  4. The rate and the extent of the stiffness drop after release increased with increasing amplitude of the release and with increasing temperature.
  5. After the deactivation, i.e., after tension and stiffness achieved a new steady level after the release, the attached cross bridges are already in the same state of strain as they were before the release. This finding is interpreted to indicate that within the deactivation phase all cross bridges attached prior the release are replaced by cross bridges attached after the release.
  6. The rate of tension and stiffness decay after release does not depend on the absolute muscle length but on the amplitude of the release which induced the deactivation.

The length–weight relationships (LWRs) for six species were estimated. Fish were captured in the mangroves of Qinzhou Harbour, China, but also some specimens were purchased from fishermen. The sampling was undertaken monthly between May 2011 and April 2012 using seines (mesh size 5–10 mm; height 4 m; length 400 m) and traps (mesh size 8.5 mm; 35 cm2 × 10 m for one unit) at seven sampling sites. Standard length was measured (precision 0.1 cm) and weight determined (precision 0.01 g) after preservation in formaldehyde (10%). Besides the equation parameters a (intercept) and b (slope) we determined also the 95% confidence limits for both parameters as well as the coefficient of correlation.  相似文献

The length–weight relationships (LWRs) of four fish species were determined from Vembanad-Kole Wetland, Kerala, India between June 2015 and May 2016. Fish samples were collected monthly from various fishing gears such as gill nets (50 m long and 1.5 m height, mesh sizes 30–100 mm, soaking time 8 hr) and seine nets (mesh sizes 8–16 mm). Values of the parameter b ranged from 2.896 to 3.165 and such values are within the expected range. This study reports the new maximum total length for Channa pseudomarulius and Hyporhamphus xanthopterus.  相似文献

Length–weight relationships (LWRs) were estimated for seven fish species from Guijiang River in Guangxi region, China. Fish samples were collected by electrofishing (CWB-2000P, China; 12 V import, 250 V export) and gill nets (length 12 m, height 0.8 m, mesh 10 mm) in January, April, July and October, 2015. The electrofishing was conducted about 2 km long within 2 hr, and ten gill nets were settled over night at each sampling site. All fish were identified and measured in the field immediately. All values for the allometric coefficient (b) of the length–weight equations were within the expected range (2.50–3.50). All values for the coefficient of determination (r2) were above .95 and thus the estimates can be considered reliable.  相似文献

We demonstrate a substantial evidence that the word length can be an essential lexical structural feature for word evolution in written Chinese. The data used in this study are diachronic Chinese short narrative texts with a time span of over 2000-years. We show that the increase of word length is an essential regularity in word evolution. On the one hand, word frequency is found to depend on word length, and their relation is in line with the Power law function y = ax-b. On the other hand, our deeper analyses show that the increase of word length results in the simplification in characters for balance in written Chinese. Moreover, the correspondence between written and spoken Chinese is discussed. We conclude that the disyllabic trend may account for the increase of word length, and its impacts can be explained in "the principle of least effort".  相似文献

The aim of the study was to trace the consequences of insufficient sleep, in terms of chronic sleep reduction rather than acute sleep deprivation, on fatigue, mood, cognitive performance self‐estimations, and daytime sleepiness in different age‐social groups. The age group of the subjects reflects their social situation and their working time organization: adolescents (n=191) obeyed the strict school schedules with starting times often before 08:00 h; university students (n=115) had more flexible timetables; young employees (n=126) were engaged in regular morning schedules or irregular daytime hours or day and night shifts. A questionnaire study determined the declared need of sleep, self‐reported sleep length, chronic fatigue (using a scale comprised of eight fatigue symptoms and four mood and three cognitive items), and daytime sleepiness (Epworth Sleepiness Scale). The declared need for sleep decreased in subsequent age groups from 9 h 23 min in school children to 8 h 22 min in university students and to 7 h 37 min in young employees. Consequently, the discrepancy between preferred and real sleep length (sleep deficit) was the largest in adolescents: 106 min. Females showed a greater need of sleep than males (p=.025) and significantly more fatigue, mood, and cognitive problems; they also exhibited higher level of daytime sleepiness (p<.000). The sleep index (reported sleep length related to requirements) correlated significantly with all health issues in women (p<.000), while only with fatigue symptoms in men (p=.013). Actual sleep length was unrelated to mood and fatigue issues; the declared individual need of sleep and sleep index showed significant associations, especially in the group of adolescents. The most frequent complaints of adolescents included tiredness on awakening (46%), nervousness, and general weakness; university students reported excessive drowsiness (50%), tension, and nervousness; employees suffered mostly from negative moods, such as tension (49%), nervousness, and irritability. The findings of the study indicate that chronic sleep loss seems to affect females more severely than males. The associations of fatigue and mood with sleep need and sleep index were more pronounced in younger subjects. Surprisingly, fatigue symptoms in school children and university students were as frequent as in hard‐working adults. Because the problem of insufficient sleep is already present in youngsters, their work time organization needs more attention.  相似文献

Abstract

The fluorescence, flow linear dichroism and electron microscopy (EM) have shown the trivaline ability to interact in solution with certain molecules of trinucleotides. This interaction results in formation of extended structures up to several. thousand angstroms in length. Such structures were observed for trivaline complexes with homopurine, homopyrimidine or random sequences of deoxyribo- and ribonucleotides, independently of the presence or absence of the terminal 5′-phosphate residue. A model of such a structural organization is proposed. An elementary structural unit consists of a trivaline β-dimer and adsorbed trinucleotide. So, “dimeric” complex is formed. Two such “dimeric” complexes combine with each other by means of peptide-peptide contacts (as with β-sandwich). So, “tetrameric” complex is formed It has a dyad axis. Two such structural units combine with each other by means of Hoogsteen's hydrogen bonds. So, “octamreic” complex is formed. It has three mutually perpendicular dyad axes. The “octameric” complexes appear to be able to combine with each other by means of stacking interactions, and to form the regular organized aggregates consisting of many dozens of elementary units. So, “stacking” structure is formed. The “octameric” complex is the symmetry translational unit of such a stucture. The spatial position of the bases in all these structures is additionally fixed by the nucleo-peptide interactions. These aggregates have the appearance of extended structures on electron micrographs.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo assess associations between the aqueous humour concentration of interleukin IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and IL-12p, tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and axial length in eyes with cataract.MethodsThe hospital-based investigation included patients who underwent cataract surgery between March 2014 and April 2014. Using aqueous humour collected at the start of cataract surgery, the interleukins IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 and IL-12p, TNF-α and VEGF were examined using a cytometric bead array. Axial length was determined by partial coherence laser interferometry (IOL Master).ResultsThe study included 33 patients with cataract (33 eyes) with a mean age of 69.2±10.8 years (range:50–87 years) and a mean axial length of 24.7±1.9 mm (range:22.6–31.5 mm). Lower aqueous concentration of VEGF was significantly associated with longer axial length (VEGF concentration (pg/mL) = -5.12 x Axial Length (mm) + 163; correlation coefficient r = -0.41; P<0.001) and more myopic refractive error (VEGF concentration (pg/mL) = 1.27xspherical equivalent (diopters)+44.8; r = 0.383; P = 0.002). The aqueous concentrations of all other substances were not significantly (all P>0.10) associated with axial length or refractive error.ConclusionsHigher intravitreal concentrations of VEGF were measured in eyes with a longer axial length, while the intraocular concentrations of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-12p and TNF-α were not correlated with axial length. The lower concentration of VEGF in axially elongated eyes may be one of the reasons for the lower prevalence of age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy in myopic eyes.  相似文献

The present study estimated length–weight relationships (LWRs) for six indigenous fish species (Barilius gatensis, Salmostoma acinaces, S. boopis, Puntius amphibius, Hemibagrus punctatus and Ambassis miops) based on specimens collected from River Cauvery (including estuary) during July 2017–January 2020. The sampling surveys were carried out in three distinct sampling seasons, viz., the pre-monsoon (March–May), the monsoon (July–October) and the post-monsoon (November–February). Majority of the fish specimens dealt in the study were collected from multi-meshed monofilament gill nets (mesh sizes 18, 30, 45, 60, 90, 110, 120 and 150 mm) operated by local fishers. For those sites situated in the protected areas, sampling was carried out by cast nets with prior permission from the local administration and the collected fishes were released back into river after length–weight measurements. The length measurements were noted as total length (TL) measured to the nearest 0.1 cm by using a digital Vernier caliper. A digital balance was used for weight measurements with an accuracy of 0.01 g. The study recorded a new maximum length of 48 cm for H. punctatus. The LWR data generated from the present study are significant for proper assessment of the stock status and their management, if collected together with other essential biological and physical parameters.  相似文献

Given finite resources, intense investment in one life history trait is expected to reduce investment in others. Although telomere length appears to be strongly tied to age in many taxa, telomere maintenance requires energy. We therefore hypothesize that telomere maintenance may trade off against other life history characters. We used natural variation in laboratory populations of Atlantic silversides (Menidia menidia) to study the relationship between growth, fecundity, life expectancy, and relative telomere length. In keeping with several other studies on fishes, we found no clear dependence of telomere length on age. However, we did find that more fecund fish tended to have both reduced life expectancy and shorter telomeres. This result is consistent with the hypothesis that there is a trade-off between telomere maintenance and reproductive output.  相似文献

Bkm sequences, originally isolated from snake satellite DNA, are a component of eukaryote genomes with a preferential location on sex chromosomes. In the Ephestia genome, owing to the presence of only a few Bkm-positive BamHI restriction fragments and to extensive restriction fragment length polymorphisms between and within inbred strains, a genetic crossbreeding analysis was feasible. No sex linkage of Bkm was detected. Instead—depending on the strain—two or three autosomal Bkm DNA loci were identified. All three loci were located on different chromosomes. Fragment length and transmission of fragments was stable in some crosses. In others, changes in fragment length or loss of the Bkm component were observed, probably depending on the source strain of the fragment. The anomalous genetic behaviour is best accounted for by the assumption that Bkm sequences are included in mobile genetic elements.  相似文献

Comment on: Dolezelova P, et al. Cell Cycle 2012; 11:953–62Mechanisms controlling the p53 regulatory network remain the focus of numerous investigations in hopes of identifying more robust cancer therapies. Both Mdm2 and MdmX are found overexpressed in tumors with wild-type p53 and represent a key molecular device modulating p53 function. Thus, examining the interplay between these three proteins becomes highly relevant in the search for new pharmacological interventions in oncology.Mdm2 is a RING-type E3 ubiquitin ligase capable of forming homo-oligomers and hetero-oligomerization with MdmX via the extreme C termini of their RING domains. Since its discovery 15 years ago, MdmX has been assigned many roles in the regulation of p53, either on its own or in concert with Mdm2. While clearly an essential negative regulator or p53 in development, its lack of intrinsic ubiquitin ligase activity has made the mechanism of p53 regulation more elusive than in the case of Mdm2. The capacity of MdmX to stimulate Mdm2-mediated p53 ubiquitination was first reported in 2003.1 Subsequent biochemical comparisons of the activity of Mdm2–MdmX complexes showed that not only does the presence of MdmX in the complex alter the substrate specificity of the holo-enzyme, it also allows for poly-ubiquitin chain formation on p53 (modification required for nuclear exclusion and degradation of p53).2-4In vitro observations describing the importance of the MdmX RING domain in regulation of p53 turnover have now gained in vivo experimental support from the two knock-in animal models.5,6 Consistent with the notion that MdmX is an essential component of p53 polyubiquitination/proteasomal degradation pathway, mice expressing either a point mutant in the MdmX RING domain or a RING domain deletion mutant succumbed to a p53-dependent embryonic lethality. These data implicate the RING domain of MdmX as the sole region of importance in the ability of MdmX to regulate p53 and, by extension, the Mdm2-MdmX complex (and not the Mdm2 homodimer), as the principle negative regulator of p53 activity during development.The growing body of evidence describing the presence of MdmX in the complex as crucial for target selectivity as well as the processivity of the holoezyme somewhat flies in the face of the existing structural data. Two published structures of the Mdm2 homodimer and Mdm2/MdmX heterodimer indicate virtually no difference in the complexes.7,8 In the absence of structural differences, how then are such significant differences in function accomplished? A hypothesis unifying structural and functional data is brought forth by a very intriguing study from the Uldrijan group, which systematically looks at the differences between complex formation and activity of Mdm2 and MdmX.9 Phylogenetic analysis showed that the last cystein of the RING domain is followed by exactly 13 amino acids in all Mdm orthologs of vertebrate origin. Based on this, the authors hypothesized that not only the sequence of the C-terminal tails, but also their exact length are of central importance to the function of the complexes. Subsequent investigation of the ability of Mdm2 and MdmX proteins, which have been extended at the C terminus by 5, 14 or 18 amino acids, was designed to test the importance of the length of the C-terminal extensions. To the researchers surprise, when examined based on their ability to hetero-oligomerize and ubiquitinate p53, Mdm2 proteins behaved differently depending on whether the oligomeric partner was Mdm2 or MdmX. Dolezelova et al. present unexpected experimental evidence for the heterocomplex being structurally and functionally distinct from the Mdm2 homodimer, while providing a mechanism for the observed in vivo functional differences between the complexes. Although the work casts slight doubt on the complete accuracy of the existing structures, it nicely aligns with the above-mentioned results, showing the singular importance of the MdmX RING domain in the activity of the holoenzyme. In light of these results, additional structural studies that will take in to account reported differences between the complexes will undoubtedly be informative and contribute to our understanding of the biochemistry of RING-type ubiquitin ligases and the mechanisms regulating p53 in cells.  相似文献

The length–weight relationships (LWRs) for seven fish species belonging to five families in the Yangtze River Estuary and its adjacent waters are presented. Cynoglossus gracilis, Cynoglossus macrolepidotus, Ctenotrypauchen chinensis, Collichthys niveatus, Ophichthus apicalis and Erisphex potti were collected monthly in 2009 using trammel nets (the size of smaller mesh net was 1.5 m × 15 m × 4 panels with mesh sizes of 2.5, 3.4, 4.3 and 5.8 cm; the size of larger-mesh net was 2.4 m × 30 m × 4 panels with mesh sizes of 5.0, 6.0, 7.0 and 8.0 cm; soaking overnight). Lophiogobius ocellicauda were collected December in 2020 using shrimp trawl nets (mesh size 2.0 cm). The precision of measurement for the fish specimens is 0.1 cm total length and 0.1 g total weight. The estimated ranges of the parameters a and b for the seven fish species were from 0.0001 to 0.0289 and 2.718 to 3.541, respectively. Two new maximum total length were recorded for Ctenotrypauchen chinensis and Ophichthus apicalis.  相似文献

Competitive interactions between mature male fallow deer were investigated to determine whether antler length, body weight, age or dominance rank were related to the number of fights between individuals. Four different hypotheses were tested; the first predicted that body weight and antler length indicate individual quality and, therefore, as the difference between competitors in body weight and antler length increases, there should be a corresponding decrease in fight rate. The second and third hypotheses predicted that, as difference in dominance rank increased there would be a decrease in fight rate between males either, as a risk reduction measure or because of inhibitory control by dominant males. A fourth hypothesis predicted that, where dominance rank does not mediate fight rate, that similarity between contestants based on age might be important. If this is the case, then as the difference in age between competitors increased there should be a decrease in fight rate. Our results show that when dominance rank is controlled for, there was no relation between body weight, antler length or age with fight rate. There was a negative relation between dominance rank difference and fight rate, a result that supports both the risk reduction and inhibitory hypotheses. There was an increasing tendency to fight with closely ranked males as cohorts reached peak reproductive age; males aged 5 yr fought with other 5‐yr‐old males based on rank difference and males aged 6 yr fought with other males aged six and across all age groups based on rank difference. This trend was not observed in 4 or 7‐yr‐old males. Our results suggest that males in prime breeding condition limit potential costs of fighting (such as time and energy) by only interacting with other males of similar rank.  相似文献

This paper deals with the numerical cladistic taxonomy. A method for constructing evolutionary tree (method of maximal same step length) is proposed in the applications and practice of cladistic taxonomy. Its algorithm runs as follows: 1) According to the order of evolution, characters are coded with nonnegative integers, producing the original data matrix. 2) Calculate the same step coefficients Sij (i≠j) by the formula (3) and form the coefficient matrix. 3. Find the maximal value Spq of the same step coefficients in the coefficient matrix. 4) According to the maximal same step length Spq, the most recent common ancestor CTU, of CTUp and CTUq can be determinated by (2). 5) draw the cladistic edges of cladogram representing the evolutionary relationship from OTUT to OTUp and OTUq. If the number of CTUs in the data matrix≤2, go to (2), otherwise stop. An example of 6 species from the family Campanulaceae is given for illustration (See Table 1). In general case, the evolutionary length of the cladogram obtained by this method is shorter than that by monothetic and other methods. Its algorithm is easily performed and is especially suitable for computerizing.相似文献
