Hemoprotozoa of freshwater turtles in Queensland 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
Blood smears from 27 turtles (15 Emydura signata, nine Elseya latisternum, and three Chelodina longicollis) from southeastern Queensland (Australia) were examined for infections by hemoprotozoan parasites between January and June 1999. Infections were found in 26 (96%) of the turtles. Twenty five (93%) were infected with the adeleorin coccidian Haemogregarina clelandi, eight (30%) with the hemosporidian Haemoproteus chelodinae, 11 (41%) with the kinetoplastid flagellate Trypanosoma chelodinae, and eight (30%) with a novel Trypanosoma sp. Despite the high prevalence and intensity of infections, there was no evidence of clinical disease in any of the turtles. 相似文献

Inferring biotic interactions from the examination of patterns of species occurrences has been a central tenet in community ecology, and it has recently gained interest in the context of single-species distribution modelling. However, understanding of how spatial extent and grain size affect such inferences remains elusive. For example, would inferences of biotic interactions from broad-scale patterns of coexistence provide a surrogate for patterns at finer spatial scales? In this paper we examine how the spatial and environmental association between two closely related species of freshwater turtles in the Iberian Peninsula is affected by the geographical extent and resolution of the analysis. Species coexistence was compared across spatial scales using five datasets at varying spatial extents and resolutions. Both similarities in the two species’ use of space and in their responses to environmental variables were explored by means of regression analyses. We show that a positive association between the two species measured at broader scales can switch to a negative association at finer scales. We demonstrate that without examination of the effects of spatial scale when investigating biotic interactions using co-occurrence patterns observed at coarse resolutions, conclusions can be deeply misleading. 相似文献

The turtles are an evolutionary ancient group of tetrapod vertebrates, and their present-day distribution and diversity reflects
the long and complex history of the taxon. Today, about 250 of the total of 320 species recognized are freshwater turtles;
most of these inhabit tropical and subtropical zones. Diversity hotspots occur in Southeast North America, regarding Emydidae,
and in the Indo-Malayan region, mostly Geoemydidae and Trionychidae. Chelidae are predominantly Neotropical and Australasian,
while Pelomedusidae are African. The majority of genus- and species-level taxa are regional or even local endemics. A majority
of freshwater turtles are threatened in varying degrees, mostly by habitat modification and collection.

Although evidence that reptiles exhibit indeterminate growth remains equivocal and based on inadequate data, the assumption that they do is still widely accepted as a general trait of reptiles. We examined patterns of variation in adult growth using long-term mark-recapture data on 13 populations of 9 species representing 3 families of freshwater turtles located in South Carolina, Michigan, and Arizona in the USA and in Ontario, Canada. Across 13 study populations, growth rates of all adults and only those that grew averaged 1.5 and 1.9 mm/yr respectively. Sources of variation in growth rates included species, population, sex, age, and latitude. Most adults of both sexes with recapture intervals greater than 10 years grew, but across all populations an average of 19 % of individuals did not grow (some with recapture intervals up to 30 years). For known-age adults of three species, the highest growth rates occurred during the 10 years following sexual maturity, and the proportions of non-growing individuals increased with age. Growth rates of adults were on average 92 % lower than those of juveniles. Based on linear relationships of clutch size and body size of females at average juvenile and adult growth rates it would take 0.7 (0.2–1.2) years and 8.6 (min–max = 2.3–18.5) years, respectively, to grow enough to increase clutch size by one egg. The majority of within population variation in adult body size in 3 species appeared to be a combination of differences in ages at maturity and juvenile and early adult growth, rather than indeterminate growth. The results from our study populations indicate that increases in body size (and associated reproductive output) that results from indeterminate growth are not substantial enough to represent a major factor in the evolution of life histories in general or the evolution of longevity and aging specifically. 相似文献

Background
Claudins are tight junction proteins that are involved in tight junction formation and function. Previous studies have shown that claudin-7 is frequently upregulated in epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) along with claudin-3 and claudin-4. Here, we investigate in detail the expression patterns of claudin-7, as well as its possible functions in EOC.Methodology/Principal Findings
A total of 95 ovarian tissue samples (7 normal ovarian tissues, 65 serous carcinomas, 11 clear cell carcinomas, 8 endometrioid carcinomas and 4 mucinous carcinomas) were studied for claudin-7 expression. In real-time RT-PCR analysis, the gene for claudin-7, CLDN7, was found to be upregulated in all the tumor tissue samples studied. Similarly, immunohistochemical analysis and western blotting showed that claudin-7 protein was significantly overexpressed in the vast majority of EOCs. Small interfering RNA-mediated knockdown of claudin-7 in ovarian cancer cells led to significant changes in gene expression as measured by microarrays and validated by RT-PCR and immunoblotting. Analyses of the genes differentially expressed revealed that the genes altered in response to claudin-7 knockdown were associated with pathways implicated in various molecular and cellular functions such as cell cycle, cellular growth and proliferation, cell death, development, and cell movement. Through functional experiments in vitro, we found that both migration and invasion were altered in cells where CLDN7 had been knocked down or overexpressed. Interestingly, claudin-7 expression was associated with a net increase in invasion, but also with a decrease in migration.Conclusion/Significance
Our work shows that claudin-7 is significantly upregulated in EOC and that it may be functionally involved in ovarian carcinoma invasion. CLDN7 may therefore represent potential marker for ovarian cancer detection and a target for therapy. 相似文献13.
There has long been interest in the influence of predators on prey populations, although most predator–prey studies have focused
on prey species that are targets of directed predator searching. Conversely, few have addressed depredation that occurs after
incidental encounters with predators. We tested two predictions stemming from the hypothesis that nest predation on two sympatric
freshwater turtle species whose nests are differentially prone to opportunistic detection—painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) and snapping turtles (Chelydra serpentina)—is incidental: (1) predation rates should be density independent, and (2) individual predators should not alter their foraging
behavior after encountering nests. After monitoring nest survival and predator behavior following nest depredation over 2
years, we confirmed that predation by raccoons (Procyon lotor), the primary nest predators in our study area, matched both predictions. Furthermore, cryptic C. picta nests were victimized with lower frequency than more detectable C. serpentina nests, and nests of both species were more vulnerable in human-modified areas where opportunistic nest discovery is facilitated.
Despite apparently being incidental, predation on nests of both species was intensive (57% for painted turtles, 84% for snapping
turtles), and most depredations occurred within 1 day of nest establishment. By implication, predation need not be directed
to affect prey demography, and factors influencing prey crypsis are drivers of the impact of incidental predation on prey.
Our results also imply that efforts to conserve imperiled turtle populations in human-modified landscapes should include restoration
of undisturbed conditions that are less likely to expose nests to incidental predators. 相似文献

Assertions that the ``conventional' rate of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) evolution is reduced in poikilotherms in general and
turtles in particular were tested for side-necked turtles (Pleurodira: Chelidae). Homologous data sets of mitochondrial 12S
rRNA gene sequences were used to compare the average divergence between the Australian and South American species for two
Gondwanan groups: the chelid turtles and the marsupials. The mean nucleotide divergences between continental groups for both
the turtles and the marsupials are remarkably similar. These data suggest that the rate of evolution of mitochondrial 12S
rRNA gene is not substantially slower in turtles than in the homeothermic marsupials.

DNA-based identification of species for phylogenetic analysis as well as forensic identification is widely being carried out with the help of polymerase chain reaction (PCR). In this study, a successful effort has been made to identify 5 species of Indian freshwater turtles, including 3 hard-shell turtles (Geoemydidae), i.e. Kachuga dhongoka, K. kachuga and Geoclemys hamiltoni, and 2 species of soft-shell turtles (Trionychidae), i.e. Aspideretes gangeticus and Lissemys punctata punctata, by using a well-optimized PCR-RFLP method. The analysis of nucleotide sequence variations in the PCR-amplified mitochondrial cyt-b genes (encoding cytochrome b) from the 5 species revealed its usefulness in the taxonomic differentiation of these species. On the basis of cyt-b sequence data and the PCR-RFLP pattern, a phylogeny was developed to resolve the genetic relationships between these species, living in the same habitat type. In comparison, the PCR-RFLP of mitochondrial 16S rDNA genes appeared less decisive in analysing phylogenetic relationships or even in species differentiation. Further, the molecular method (PCR-RFLP) developed here is simple, rapid, reliable and reproducible; hence it can be routinely applied for species identification, essential for conservation and management of endangered chelonian species. 相似文献

A total of 222 specimens from 55 populations of short-necked chelid turtle was collected from drainages in Australia and Papua New Guinea. Two populations were initially considered to belong to different diagnosable taxa if all individuals in one population could be distinguished from all individuals in the other by fixed allozyme differences. When two populations or diagnosable taxa shared allozymes at all presumptive loci, their profiles were combined into a single diagnosable taxon. Comparisons between populations and emerging diagnosable taxa were repeated until no further changes were possible. The species Elseya dentata comprised five clearly diagnosable taxa, differing by between 4 and 19 fixed allozyme differences. The currently recognized El. latisternum and El. novaeguineae were each a single diagnosable taxon, and there were three diagnosable taxa, including a sibling pair, that could not be assigned to a currendy described Elseya species. In contrast, all forms of Emydura were very closely related, with no two taxa differing by more than three fixed allozyme differences. There were three diagnosable taxa in the north (Em. victoriae, Em. subglobosa and one new form), though support for them was marginal. In the south, Em. macquarii, Em. krefflii and Em. signata formed only a single diagnosable taxon, even sharing rare alleles. If the phylogenetic species concept is adopted, there is support for recognition of 16 species of short-necked turtle in Australia, including Pseudemydura umbrina. Currendy only 10 are described. Our data also provide evidence of reproductive isolation in some cases (sympatric or parapatric), and comparative evidence (sensu Mayr) in others, than the traditional biological species concept applies also to these diagnosable taxa. 相似文献
