Background and Aims

Field studies have demonstrated that aluminum (Al) toxicity is low in no-till systems during cropping seasons that have adequate and well-distributed rainfall. This study evaluated the performance of corn (Zea mays L.) and soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) on an acid loamy soil under a long-term no-till system, in response to surface liming and as affected by genotypic tolerance to Al and water stress.

Methods

A field trial examined the effect of surface application of lime (0, 4, 8, and 12 Mg ha?1) on no-till corn and soybean nutrition and yield. Trials were also carried out in undisturbed soil columns taken from the unlimed and limed plots. Two hybrids/cultivars of corn and soybean, one sensitive and the other moderately sensitive to Al were grown at two soil moisture levels with and without water stress (50 % and 80 % water filled pore space).

Results

Alleviating soil acidity by liming improved nutrition and increased grain yields of corn and soybean. The benefits of liming on root length density, nutrient uptake and shoot biomass production of corn and soybean were more pronounced in Al-sensitive genotypes under water stress.

Conclusions

The results suggest that plants exposed to drought stress under no-till systems are more affected by Al toxicity.  相似文献

Background and aims

Knowledge about the effects of water and fertilizer on soil CO2 efflux (SCE) and Q 10 is essential for understanding carbon (C) cycles and for evaluating future global C balance. A two-year field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of water, fertilizer, and temperature on SCE in semiarid grassland in northern China.

Methods

SCE, as well as environmental factors was measured in two grasslands, one with bunge needlegrass (BNE, Stipa bungeana) and one with purple alfalfa (ALF, Medicago sativa), with four treatments: CK (unwatered and unfertilized); W (50 mm water addition yr?1); F (50 kg phosphorus (P) fertilizer ha?1 yr?1 for ALF, 100 kg nitrogen (N)?+?50 kg P fertilizer ha?1 yr?1 for BNE); and W + F.

Results

During the 11-month experimental period from July 2010 to October 2011, the addition of water consistently stimulated mean SCE in BNE and ALF, and the positive effects were relatively stronger during dry seasons. P fertilization consistently enhanced SCE in ALF, and the positive effect was strongly dependent on the availability of soil water. The effects of N plus P fertilization on SCE in BNE varied seasonally from significant increases to small reductions to no response. Water addition increased the Q 10 of SCE in ALF by 11 % but had no effect in BNE. Fertilization, however, reduced the Q 10 of SCE by 21 % and 13 % for BNE and ALF, respectively. Models that rely only on Q 10 underestimated the emissions of soil CO2 by 8–15 % at the study site, which was mediated by species and treatment.

Conclusions

Responses of SCE and its temperature sensitivity to water and fertilizer may vary with species and depend on the period of measurement. Models of SCE need to incorporate the availability of ecosystemic water and nutrients, as well as species, and incorporate different environmental factors when determining the impact of water, nutrients, and species on SCE.  相似文献

Background and aims

Salt is known to accumulate in the root-zone of Na+ excluding glycophytes under saline conditions. We examined the effect of soil salinity on Na+ and Cl? depletion or accumulation in the root-zone of the halophyte (Atriplex nummularia Lindl).

Methods

A pot experiment was conducted in soil to examine Na+ and Cl? concentrations adjacent to roots at four initial NaCl treatments (20, 50, 200 or 400 mM NaCl in the soil solution). Plant water use was manipulated by leaving plants with all leaves intact, removing approximately 50 % of leaves, or removing all leaves. Daily evapotranspiration was replaced by watering undrained pots to weight with deionised water. After 35-38 days, samples were taken of the bulk soil and of soil loosely- and closely-adhering to the roots.

Results

In plants with leaves intact grown with 200 and 400 mM NaCl, average Na+ and Cl? concentrations in the closely adhering soil were about twice the concentrations of the bulk soil. Ion accumulation increased with final leaf area and with cumulative transpiration over the duration of the trial. By contrast, in plants grown with the lowest salinity treatment (20 mM NaCl), Na+ and Cl? concentrations decreased in the closely adhering soil with increasing leaf area and increasing cumulative water use.

Conclusions

Our data show that Na+ and Cl? are depleted from the root-zone of A. nummularia at low salinity but accumulate in the root-zone at moderate to high salinity, and that the ions are drawn towards the plant in the transpiration stream.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the short-term effects of maize (Zea mays)-fallow rotation, residue management, and soil water on carbon mineralization in a tropical cropping system in Ghana. After 15 months of the trial, maize–legume rotation treatments had significantly (P?C 0 (μg CO2–C g?1) than maize–elephant grass (Pennisetum purpureum) rotations. The C 0 for maize–grass rotation treatments was significantly related to the biomass input (r?=?0.95; P?=?0.05), but that for the maize–legume rotation was not. The soil carbon mineralization rate constant, k (per day), was also significantly related to the rotation treatments (P?k values for maize–grass and maize–legume rotation treatments were 0.025 and 0.036 day?1 respectively. The initial carbon mineralization rate, m 0 (μg CO2–C g?1 day ?1), was significantly (P?θ. The m 0 ranged from 3.88 to 18.67 and from 2.30 to 15.35 μg CO2–C g?1 day?1 for maize–legume and maize–grass rotation treatments, respectively, when the soil water varied from 28% to 95% field capacity (FC). A simple soil water content (θ)-based factor, f w, formulated as: \(f_{\text{w}} = \left[ {\frac{{\theta - \theta _{\text{d}} }}{{\theta _{{\text{FC}}} - \theta _{\text{d}} }}} \right]\), where θ d and θ FC were the air-dry and field capacity soil water content, respectively, adequately described the variation of the m 0 with respect to soil water (R 2?=?0.91; RMSE?=?1.6). Such a simple relationship could be useful for SOC modeling under variable soil water conditions.  相似文献

Background and aims

The potential use of a metal-tolerant sunflower mutant line for both biomonitoring and phytoremediating a Cu-contaminated soil series was investigated.

Methods

The soil series (21–1,170 mg Cu kg?1) was sampled in field plots at control and wood preservation sites. Sunflowers were cultivated 1 month in potted soils under controlled conditions.

Results

pH and dissolved organic matter influenced Cu concentration in the soil pore water. Leaf chlorophyll content and root growth decreased as Cu exposure rose. Their EC10 values corresponded to 104 and 118 μg Cu L?1 in the soil pore water, 138 and 155 mg Cu kg?1 for total soil Cu, and 16–18 mg Cu kg?1 DW shoot. Biomass of plant organs as well as leaf area, length and asymmetry were well correlated with Cu exposure, contrary to the maximum stem height and leaf water content.

Conclusions

Physiological parameters were more sensitive to soil Cu exposure than the morphological ones. Bioconcentration and translocation factors and distribution of mineral masses for Cu highlighted this mutant as a secondary Cu accumulator. Free Cu2+ concentration in soil pore water best predicted Cu phytoavailability. The usefulness of this sunflower mutant line for biomonitoring and Cu phytoextraction was discussed.  相似文献

This experiment was arranged to investigate the ability of hydrotime model (θH) for estimating soybean seed germination (cv. ‘JK’) under different accelerated aging periods (AAP, 0, 24, 48, and 72 h) at each of the following water potentials (ψ, 0, ??0.12, ??0.24, and ??0.36 MPa). Results indicated that both germination percentage (GP) and germination rate (GR) significantly influenced by ψ, AAP, and their interactions (P?<?0.01). GP and GR decreased by 62.6 and 47.3% with longer AAP from 0 to 72 h and by 90.7 and 81.5% with lower ψ from zero to ??0.36 MPa as compared to the control, respectively. Therefore, the effect of ψ on GP and GR was more than AAP. The θH value was constant (~?6.71 MPa h?1) till 50.6 h AAP and then linearly declined with the rate of 0.1545 MPa h?1 per hour increase in AAP until 72 h (~?50% lower than its initial value). The ψb(50) value was ? 0.343 MPa in the control and then increased (became more positive) by ~?70% until 72 h AAP (? 0.104 MPa). In general, GP and GR of soybean declined with the increasing ψb(50) which can be due to cell membrane damage and reduce the activity of enzymes and organelles during AAP. Based on our findings, the θH model could describe well these relationships and their parameters can nicely be used for simulating soybean seed germination under this condition.  相似文献

Aim

To test for the presence of an impediment to water flow at the soil-root interface.

Methods

Wheat plants were grown in repacked and undisturbed field soil. Their transpiration rate, E, was varied in several steps from low to high and then back to low again, while the hydrostatic pressure in the leaf xylem, ψ xylem, was measured non-destructively and continuously. These measurements were compared to a mathematical model that calculated ψ xylem by assuming that the hydraulic resistance across the plant was constant and that the radial flow of water to unit length of a typical plant root generated gradients in pressure in the soil water.

Results

For the repacked soil, the radial flow model could not match the experiment during the falling phase of E, unless it was assumed that either an additional, constant, interfacial resistance between the soil and the roots had developed when E was large and ψ xylem was rapidly falling, or that the resistance within the plant had changed. For the undisturbed field soil, the radial flow model did not agree with the experiment. Plausible agreement was achieved when plant water uptake was accounted for using a distributed sink model in HYDRUS-1D, with E integrated across the rootzone. This approach was based on the measured large variation in the vertical distribution of roots.

Conclusions

There was no strong evidence of large drawdowns of soil water in the rhizosphere, even when ψ xylem was falling rapidly when E was large and the soil was moderately dry. Thus, there seems to have been an additional impediment to water flow from soil to plant, either within the plant, or at the interface between the two.  相似文献

Background and aims

As low initial uptake and essentially zero later uptake limit efficacy of N fertilization for temperate conifers, we investigated factors limiting long-term tree uptake of residual 15?N-labeled fertilizer.

Methods

We used a pot bioassay to assess availability of 15?N from soil sampled 10 years after fertilization of a Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (Mirb.) Franco) stand with 15?N-urea (200 kg N ha?1). Douglas-fir seedlings were grown for 2 years in organic (designated LFH) and mineral soil (0–10 cm) layers reconstructed from control and fertilized plots; residual fertilizer N amounted to 10 % of LHF and 5 % of MIN N.

Results

Percentage recovery of residual 15?N in seedlings was not affected by the original season of fertilization (spring vs. fall), but differed by the source of 15?N excess. LFH was a better source of residual 15?N; 12.4 % of residual LFH 15?N was taken up by seedlings and 7.6 % transferred to soil, whereas mineral soil yielded only 8.3 % of residual 15?N to seedling uptake and 2.4 % to LFH. Extractable inorganic N was 2–3 orders of magnitude higher in fallow pots.

Conclusions

Ten-year residual fertilizer 15?N was clearly cycling between LFH and mineral soil and available to seedlings, indicating that other factors such as denitrification, leaching, and asynchrony of soil N mineralization and tree uptake limit long-term residual N fertilizer uptake in the field.  相似文献

Background and aims

Plant physiological traits and their relation to soil N availability was investigated as regulators of the distribution of understory shrub species along a slope in a Japanese cedar (Cryptomeria japonica) plantation in central Japan.

Methods

At the study site, previous studies demonstrated that both net and gross soil nitrification rates are high on the lower slope and there are dramatic declines in different sections of the slope gradient. We examined the distributions of understory plant species and their nitrate (NO 3 ? -N) use traits, and compared the results with the soil traits.

Results

Our results show that boundaries between different dominant understory species correspond to boundaries between different soil types. Leucosceptrum stellipilum occurs on soil with high net and gross nitrification rates. Hydrangea hirta is dominant on soil with high net and low gross nitrification rates. Pieris japonica occurs on soil with very low net and gross nitrification rates. Dominant understory species have species-specific physiological traits in their use of NO 3 ? -N. Pieris japonica lacks the capacity to use NO 3 ? -N as a N source, but other species do use NO 3 ? -N. Lindera triloba, whose distribution is unrelated to soil NO 3 ? -N availability, changes the extent to which it uses NO 3 ? -N in response to soil NO 3 ? -N availability.

Conclusions

Our results indicate that differences in the physiological capabilities and adaptabilities of plant species in using NO 3 ? -N as a N source regulate their distribution ranges. The identity of the major form of available soil N is therefore an environmental factor that influences plant distributions.  相似文献

Key message

Analysis of sap flux density during drought suggests that the large sapwood and rooting volumes of larger trees provide a buffer against drying soil.

Abstract

The southern conifer Agathis australis is amongst the largest and longest-lived trees in the world. We measured sap flux densities (F d) in kauri trees with a DBH range of 20–176 cm to explore differences in responses of trees of different sizes to seasonal conditions and summer drought. F d was consistently higher in larger trees than smaller trees. Peak F d was 20 and 8 g m?2 s?1 for trees of diameters of 176 and 20 cm, respectively, during the wet summer. Multiple regression analysis revealed photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) and vapour pressure deficit (D) were the main drivers of F d. During drought, larger trees were more responsive to D whilst smaller trees were more responsive to soil drying. Our largest tree had a sapwood area of 3,600 cm2. Preliminary analysis suggests stem water storage provides a buffer against drying soil in larger trees. Furthermore, F d of smaller trees had higher R 2 values for soil moisture at 30 and 60 cm depth than soil moisture at 10 cm depth (R 2 = 0.68–0.97 and 0.55–0.67, respectively) suggesting that deeper soil moisture is more important for these trees. Larger trees did not show a relationship between F d and soil moisture, suggesting they were accessing soil water deeper than 60 cm. These results suggest that larger trees may be better prepared for increasing frequency and intensity of summer droughts due to deeper roots and/or larger stem water storage capacity.

Background and aims

Two inland dunes in the Netherlands receiving low (24) and high (41 kg N ha?1 yr?1) nitrogen (N) deposition were compared for N dynamics and microbial activity to investigate the potential effect of N on succession rate of the vegetation and loss of pioneer habitats.

Methods

Primary succession stages were sampled, including bare sand, and vegetation dominated by Polytrichum piliferum, Campylopus introflexus, lichens and grasses respectively, representing a series of vegetation types in undisturbed drift sand sites with succession starting on bare sand containing virtually no organic matter. Microbial characteristics and potential N mineralization were analysed in a laboratory experiment.

Results

Organic matter accumulated during succession, resulting in a lower pH and in higher microbial biomass (bacteria and fungi), respiration and net N mineralization. The increase in respiration and N mineralization was largely due to the development of an ectorganic layer in the middle stages of succession. The observed effects of N deposition were (1) decrease of microbial biomass, (2) higher net N mineralization per m2, (3) higher levels of free nitrogen in the soil, and (4) a higher microbial N:P ratio.

Conclusions

Elevated N deposition leads to higher N availability which may cause accelerated succession.  相似文献

The chemistry of seepage water was studied before and after small scale clear-cutting and femel cutting (removing 20% of the trees) between 1999 and 2002 at the H?glwald site in southern Bavaria. The interventions were performed in February 2000 on mature, N-saturated Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst.) stands with high NO 3 concentrations before felling. Seepage water was collected with suction cups at 40 cm soil depth in the following treatments: (I) a mature stand (control), (II) a femel-cut, and (III) a clear-cut. In the femel cut subvariants were created with suction cups (plots) at varying distances from pre-selected spruce, which were later removed. The femel treatment was replanted with beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) saplings. On the clear-cut, subvariants of planted beech (close to the stem, interstem area), planted spruce (interstem), or natural spruce regeneration were investigated. Clear-cutting caused high NO 3 peaks (average values up to 2750 μM) during 2000 and 2001 in all planted tree subvariants during times of comparatively low water fluxes. In contrast to peak concentrations, flux weighted yearly average concentrations showed different trends. In 2000, flux weighted yearly average NO 3 concentrations were significantly elevated, but only on the subvariants of the interstem area, which covered in the clear-cut plot ca. 62% of the area. However, the subvariant close to the stem (31% of clear-cut area), or the natural spruce regeneration subvariant (6% of clear-cut area) exhibited no significant felling effect. With respect to the whole treatment area, this resulted in no significant felling effect as compared with the control. In the next year (2001), flux weighted yearly average NO 3 concentrations were not significantly affected by clear-cutting, while the concentrations were even reduced for all of the clear-cut subvariants in 2002. On the subvariant natural spruce regeneration, NO 3 concentrations remained below the European limit of drinking water (806 μM) during almost the whole investigation period. Selective cutting resulted in slightly reduced NO 3 concentrations in 2000 and 2001 on the femel treatment. However, no significant effect could be detected for any subvariant in the femel-cut, even not for the subvariant with suction cups closest to the felled spruce. In contrast to many other investigations, clear-cutting did not increase the NO 3 problem on the treatment to a relevant extend. Quite contrary, a decline in NO 3 concentrations to values below the EU level for drinking water and levels below the control and femel treatment just 2 years after cutting were observed. Al3+ concentrations showed nearly the same trend as NO 3 , while Ca2+, Mg2+, and K+ concentrations were affected to a lesser degree. Only in 2002 was Ca2+ significantly lower on the clear-cut as compared to the femel treatment, but not compared to the control. Mg2+ increased in 2000 on the clear-cut subvariants in the interstem area, but decreased in the years 2001 and 2002. Changes could be observed for K+ only periodically on some subvariants, but not for the whole treatment area. Concentrations of SO 4 2− , Na+, and Cl were reduced after clear-cutting and remained nearly unchanged after femel cutting.  相似文献

Water stress is a primary limitation on plant growth. In previous studies, it has been found that ammonium enhances the tolerance of rice plants to water stress, but how water is related to nitrogen form and water stress remains unknown. To study the effects of nitrogen form (NH 4 + , NO 3 ? , and a mixture of NH 4 + and NO 3 ? ) on the growth and water absorption of rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings, a hydroponic experiment with water stress, simulated by the addition of polyethylene glycol (PEG, 10% w/v, MW 6000), was conducted in a greenhouse. The results showed that, compared with non-water stress, under water stress, the fresh weight of rice seedlings increased by 14% with NH 4 + nutrition, whereas it had decreased by about 20% with either NO 3 ? or mixed nitrogen nutrition. No significant difference was found in the transpiration rate of excised shoots or in xylem exudation of excised roots in NH 4 + supply between the two water situations, whereas xylem flow decreased by 57% and 24% under water stress in NO 3 ? and mixed nutrition, and root hydraulic conductivity decreased by 29% and 54% in plants in NH 4 + and NO 3 ? nutrition conditions, respectively. Although water absorption ability decreased in both NH 4 + and NO 3 ? nutrition, aquaporin activity was higher in NH 4 + than in NO 3 ? nutrition, regardless of water stress. We conclude that NH 4 + nutrition can improve water handling in rice seedlings and subsequently enhance their resistance to drought.  相似文献

Aim

This study aimed at predicting how sub-alpine coniferous ecosystems respond to global changes in the Eastern Tibetan Plateau by understanding soil microbial communities and activities, as well as variation in the quality and quantity of soil organic matter.

Methods

An experiment was conducted to examine soil microbial communities and their related soil processes in rhizospheric soil of two coniferous species that were exposed to two levels of temperature (unwarmed and infrared heater warming) and two levels of nitrogen (unfertilized and 25 g N m?2 a?1) from April 2007.

Results

Four-year night warming alone slightly affected the phospholipid fatty acid contents of the microbial community. However, the combination of nitrogen addition and soil warming significantly affected soil microbial composition while reducing the biomass of major microbial groups and the activities of most enzymes, especially in Abies faxoniana plots. The combination of warming and nitrogen addition increased soil labile C and N pools in Picea asperata plots and was beneficial for soil recalcitrant C, as well as for labile and total C and N pools in A. faxoniana plots.

Conclusion

Results indicated that future warming will slightly affect soil microbial communities and their related soil processes. However, warming combined with high nitrogen deposition will significantly constrain soil microbial biomass and enzyme activities, consequently increasing soil C and N pools in sub-alpine coniferous forests of this region.  相似文献

Aims

Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris Mill.) is being restored across the U.S. South for a multitude of ecological and economic reasons, but our understanding of longleaf pine’s response to soil physical conditions is poor. On the contrary, our understanding of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) root and shoot growth response to soil conditions is well established.

Methods

We performed a comparative greenhouse study which modeled root length density, total seedling biomass, and the ratio of aboveground:belowground mass as functions of volumetric water content, bulk density and soil fertility (fertilized or not).

Results

Root length density was about 35 % greater in longleaf pine seedlings compared to loblolly pine seedlings, and was reasonably well modeled (R 2?=?0.54) for longleaf pine by bulk density (linear), volumetric water content (quadratic), soil fertility, and the interactions of bulk density, volumetric water content, species, and soil fertility. The aboveground:belowground mass ratio (ABR) increased at both extremes of water content.

Conclusions

This research indicates that young longleaf pine seedling root systems respond more negatively to extremes of soil physical conditions than loblolly pine, and compacted or dry loamy soils should be ameliorated in addition to normal competition control, especially on soils degraded by past management.  相似文献

Aims and Background

Many plants preferentially grow roots into P-enriched soil patches, but little is known about how the presence of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) affects this response.

Methods

Lotus japonicus (L.) was grown in a low-P soil with (a) no additional P, (b) homogeneous P (28 mg pot?1), (c) low heterogeneous P (9.3 mg pot?1), and (d) high heterogeneous P (28 mg pot?1). Each P treatment was combined with one of three mycorrhiza treatments: no mycorrhizae, Glomus intraradices, indigenous AMF. Real-time PCR was used to assess the abundance of G. intraradices and the indigeneous AMF G. mosseae and G. claroideum.

Results

Mycorrhization and P fertilization strongly increased plant growth. Homogeneous P supply enhanced growth in both mycorrhizal treatments, while heterogeneous P fertilization increased biomass production only in treatments with indigenous AMF inoculation. Preferential root allocation into P-enriched soil was significant only in absence of AMF. The abundance of AMF species was similar in P-enriched and unfertilized soil patches.

Conclusion

Mycorrhization may completely override preferential root growth responses of plants to P- patchiness in soil. The advantage of this effect for the plants is to give roots more freedom to forage for other resources in demand for growth and to adapt to variable soil conditions.  相似文献

Key Message

The critical level for SO 2 susceptibility of Populus × canescens is approximately 1.2 μL L ?1 SO 2 . Both sulfite oxidation and sulfite reduction and assimilation contribute to SO 2 detoxification.

Abstract

In the present study, uptake, susceptibility and metabolism of SO2 were analyzed in the deciduous tree species poplar (Populus × canescens). A particular focus was on the significance of sulfite oxidase (SO) for sulfite detoxification, as SO has been characterized as a safety valve for SO2 detoxification in herbaceous plants. For this purpose, poplar plants were exposed to different levels of SO2 (0.65, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2 μL L?1) and were characterized by visible injuries and at the physiological level. Gas exchange parameters (stomatal conductance for water vapor, CO2 assimilation, SO2 uptake) of the shoots were compared with metabolite levels (sulfate, thiols) and enzyme activities [SO, adenosine 5′-phosphosulfate reductase (APR)] in expanding leaves (80–90 % expanded). The critical dosage of SO2 that confers injury to the leaves was 1.2 μL L?1 SO2. The observed increase in sulfur containing compounds (sulfate and thiols) in the expanding leaves strongly correlated with total SO2 uptake of the plant shoot, whereas SO2 uptake rate was strongly correlated with stomatal conductance for water vapor. Furthermore, exposure to high concentration of SO2 revealed channeling of sulfite through assimilatory sulfate reduction that contributes in addition to SO-mediated sulfite oxidation to sulfite detoxification in expanding leaves of this woody plant species.  相似文献

Aims

Nitrogen deposition affect fine-root dynamics, a key factor in forest carbon and nutrient dynamics. This study aimed to elucidate the effects of increased soil inorganic nitrogen (N) levels on the fine-root dynamics of Cryptomeria japonica, which is tolerant to excess N load.

Methods

An ammonium nitrate solution (28 kg ha?1 month?1) was applied for 3 years to plots (1 m?×?2 m) in a C. japonica plantation. The elongation and disappearance of the fine roots were examined using the minirhizotron technique.

Results

The N fertilization increased soil inorganic N content and lowered the soil pH. Fine-root elongation rates increased with fertilization, whereas patterns of their seasonal changes were not affected. The ratio of cumulative disappearance to cumulative elongation of fine roots was lower in the N-fertilized plots than in the control plots. The mean diameter of the fine roots was not affected by N fertilization.

Conclusions

Our results suggest that C. japonica can respond to increased levels of soil inorganic N by increasing both the production and residence time of the fine roots. However, the effects of the changing soil N content are less evident for the phenology and morphology of the fine roots in C. japonica.  相似文献

Aims

Soil respiration in forest plantations can be greatly affected by management practices such as irrigation. In northwest China, soil water is usually a limiting factor for the development of forest plantations. This study aims to examine the effects of irrigation intensity on soil respiration from three poplar clone plantations in this arid area.

Methods

The experiment included three poplar clones subjected to three irrigation intensities (without, low and high). Soil respiration was measured using a Li-6400-09 chamber during the growing season in 2007.

Results

Mean soil respiration rates were 2.92, 4.74 and 3.49 μmol m?2 s?1 for control, low and high irrigation treatments, respectively. Soil respiration decreased once soil water content was below a lower (14.8 %) or above an upper (26.2 %) threshold. When soil water content ranged from 14.8 % to 26.2 %, soil respiration increased and correlated with soil temperature. Fine root also played a role in the significant differences in soil CO2 efflux among the three treatments. Furthermore, the three poplar hybrid clones responded differently to irrigation regarding fine root production and soil CO2 efflux.

Conclusions

Irrigation intensity had a strong impact on soil respiration of the three poplar clone plantations, which was mainly because fine root biomass and microbial activities were greatly influenced by soil water conditions. Our results suggest that irrigation management is a main factor controlling soil carbon dynamics in forest plantation in arid regions.  相似文献

Background and aims

Future climate scenarios for the Mediterranean imply increasing precipitation variability. This study presents a large-scale water manipulation experiment simulating changes in precipitation variability, aiming at a better understanding of the effects of rainfall patterns on soil C and N cycling and understorey productivity in a Mediterranean oak woodland.

Methods

We used rain-out shelters to achieve (1) a normal dry period (7 days), and (2) a dry period increased three-fold (21 days), without altering total annual precipitation inputs.

Results

The temporal patterns of soil respiration (R s) and soil inorganic N were not affected by treatment. However, water infiltration and N leaching increased with large infrequent watering events. R s and soil NH4 +-N correlated with soil temperature, with soil NO3 ?-N being influenced by leaching.

Conclusions

The lack of significant treatment effects on either R s or soil inorganic N can be explained by (1) minor differences in plant productivity between the treatments, suggesting equal plant N demand, and (2) the absence of moisture dependence of R s and soil NH4 +-N. Increased N leaching with large infrequent precipitation events may have longer-term consequences for ecosystem functioning. Our results contribute to an improved understanding of possible climate change effects on key ecosystem processes in Mediterranean ecosystems.  相似文献
