Summary Mice were sampled from a line selected for increased postweaning weight gain from three to six weeks and from a randombred control line originating from the same base population. Body weights were recorded at each of 14 ages from day 5 to day 98. The Richards and logistic growth functions were fitted to the growth trajectories of each individual mouse by a generalized non-linear least squares procedure. Estimated growth parameters (asymptotic weight, rate, shape of curve, age and weight at inflection, mean absolute growth rate and mean relative growth rate) were computed for each individual. The effects of line, litter within line, sex and line × sex interactions on these estimated parameters were then studied. Both the Richards and logistic functions fitted the data equally well and the plotted trajectories coincided over most of the growth curve. There was excellent agreement between the estimates of asymptotic weight and both age and weight at inflection based on the different functions. However, both functions apparently underestimated the asymptotic weight.Analyses of the line differences showed that selection for postweaning gain increased the mean absolute growth rate over the entire curve but had no effect on the relative growth rate or the shape of the growth curve. Full-sib analyses suggested the presence of considerable genetic variation and some high genetic correlations among the estimated growth parameters.Paper number 2942 of the Journal Series of the North Carolina State University Agricultural Experiment Station, Raleigh, North Carolina. In the present study, Biomphalaria snails collected from five Egyptian governorates (Giza, Fayoum, Kafr El-Sheikh, Ismailia and Damietta), as well as reference control Biomphalaria alexandrina snails from the Schistosome Biological Supply Center (SBSC) (Theodor Bilharz Research Institute, Egypt), were subjected to species-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays to identify the collected species. All of the collected snails were found to be B. alexandrina and there was no evidence of the presence of Biomphalaria glabrata. Randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD)-PCR assays showed different fingerprints with varying numbers of bands for the first generation (F?) of B. alexandrina snail populations (SBSC, Giza, Fayoum, Kafr El-Sheikh, Ismailia and Damietta). The primer OPA-1 produced the highest level of polymorphism and amplified the greatest number of specific bands. The estimated similarity coefficients among the B. alexandrina populations based on the RAPD-PCR profiles ranged from 0.56 (between SBSC and Ismailia snails) to 0.72 (between Ismailia and Kafr El-Sheikh snails). Experimental infection of the F? of progeny from the collected snails with Schistosoma mansoni (SBSC strain) showed variable susceptibility rates ranging from 15% in the Fayoum snail group to 50.3% in SBSC snails. A negative correlation was observed between the infection rates in the different snail groups and the distances separating their corresponding governorates from the parasite source. The infection rates of the snail groups and their similarity coefficients with SBSC B. alexandrina snails were positively correlated. The variations in the rates of infection of different B. alexandrina groups with S. mansoni, as well as the differences in the similarity coefficients among these snails, are dependent not only on the geographical distribution of the snails and the parasite, but also on the genetic variability of the snails. Introduction of this variability into endemic areas may reduce the ability of the parasite to infect local hosts and consequently reduce schistosomiasis epidemiology.  相似文献

In Biomphalaria glabrata snails already harboring Echinostoma lindoense, attempts at reinfection with the same trematode species failed when the interval between exposures was 6 days or more. With 2 days between exposures, the experimental snails were as susceptible to reinfection as the control snails. Between these limits, the reinfection failure rate increased with the exposure interval. Failure to reinfect the snails was probably due to cannibalism, young sporocysts from the second infection being swallowed by predatory rediae from the first infection. Development of sporocysts in successfully reinfected snails was normal.  相似文献

A laboratory rearing system in semi-controlled conditions is proposed to facilitate the behavioural rhythms of the edible snail (Helix aspersa) and to produce a high growth rate with low variability. The growth data were used to construct a model for weight estimation based on age. The animals' live weights showed low variability (<17%) and normal distribution. The best model for estimating weight from age is the logistic model, with a high corelation coefficient (>90%), and a high level of significance for the coefficient (P < 0.0001).  相似文献

Abstract. The hypothesis that infecting trematodes influence the spatial distribution of the estuarine snail Ilyanassa obsoleta was tested. This work was conducted in the Savages Ditch habitat, Rehoboth Bay, DE, USA, which has an essentially flat, sandy-mud bottom bordered by saltmarsh shorelines and many infected snails. In 1996, two groups of snails were individually marked and released from one location after being screened for trematode infections. One group, transplanted from sites where snails tended not to be infected, consisted of snails that tested as uninfected. The other group consisted of snails native to Savages Ditch. Species of trematode carried by each snail was recorded. Marked snails were found and their positions were recorded until 2001. Snails were in five infection categories: (1) not infected, and infected with (2) Himasthla quissetensis , or (3) Lepocreadium setiferoides or (4) Zoogonus rubellus , or (5) with both H. quissetensis and Z. rubellus . The results show that the spatial distributions of snails depended on whether or not they were infected and, if infected, on which trematode species they carried. To complete life cycles, these parasites must accomplish transmission from the first (the snail) to the second intermediate hosts by short-lived, swimming cercariae. These data do not allow resolution of why snails distributed as they did, but sighting distributions of infected snails can be related to distributions of second hosts and it is proposed that parasites engender host snail distributions that improve chances of transmission.  相似文献

Summary Freshwater snails and anuran tadpoles have been suggested to have their highest population densities in ponds of intermediate size where abiotic disturbance (e.g. desiccation) is low and large predators absent. Both snails and tadpoles feed on periphytic algae and, thus, there should be a large potential for competitive interactions to occur between these two distantly related taxa. In a field experiment we examined the relative strength of competition between two closely related snail species, Lymnaea stagnalis and L. peregra, and between L. stagnalis and tadpoles of the common frog, Rana temporaria. Snail growth and egg production and tadpole size at and time to metamorphosis were determined. Effects on the common food source, periphyton, were monitored with the aid of artificial substrates. Periphyton dry weight was dramatically reduced in the presence of snails and/or tadpoles. There were no competitive effects on growth or egg production of the two snail species when they were coexisting. Mortality of L. peregra was high (95%) after reproduction, but independent of treatment. Growth of L. stagnalis was reduced only at the highest tadpole densities, whereas egg production was reduced both by intraspecific competition and by competition with tadpoles. Differences in egg production were retained after tadpole metamorphosis. Tadpole larval period increased, weight of metamorphosing frogs decreased and growth rate was reduced as a function of increasing tadpole density. However, contrary to expectation, snails had a positive effect on tadpole larval period, weight and growth rate. Further, in experimental containers without snails there was a dense growth of the filamentous green alga Cladophora sp. We suggest that the facilitative effects of snails on tadpoles are due to an indirect mutualistic mechanism, involving competition between food sources of different quality (microalgae and Cladophora sp.) and tadpoles being competitively dominant over snails for the preferred food source (microalgae). In the presence of tadpoles snails will be forced to feed on low-quality Cladophora, increasing nutrient turnover rates, which results in enhanced productivity of microalgae, increasing tadpole food resources. Thus, tadpoles have a negative effect on snails through resource depression, while snails facilitate tadpole growth through an indirect enhancement of food availability.  相似文献

The geological rise of the Central American Isthmus separated the Pacific and the Atlantic oceans about 3 Ma, creating a formidable barrier to dispersal for marine species. However, similar to Simpson's proposal that terrestrial species can 'win sweepstakes routes'-whereby highly improbable dispersal events result in colonization across geographical barriers-marine species may also breach land barriers given enough time. To test this hypothesis, we asked whether intertidal marine snails have crossed Central America to successfully establish in new ocean basins. We used a mitochondrial DNA genetic comparison of sister snails (Cerithideopsis spp.) separated by the rise of the Isthmus. Genetic variation in these snails revealed evidence of at least two successful dispersal events between the Pacific and the Atlantic after the final closure of the Isthmus. A combination of ancestral area analyses and molecular dating techniques indicated that dispersal from the Pacific to the Atlantic occurred about 750 000 years ago and that dispersal in the opposite direction occurred about 72 000 years ago. The geographical distribution of haplotypes and published field evidence further suggest that migratory shorebirds transported the snails across Central America at the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in southern Mexico. Migratory birds could disperse other intertidal invertebrates this way, suggesting the Central American Isthmus may not be as impassable for marine species as previously assumed.  相似文献

This paper addresses the problem of estimating an age-at-death distribution or paleodemographic profile from osteological data. It is demonstrated that the classical two-stage procedure whereby one first constructs estimates of age-at-death of individual skeletons and then uses these age estimates to obtain a paleodemographic profile is not a correct approach. This is a consequence of Bayes' theorem. Instead, we demonstrate a valid approach that proceeds from the opposite starting point: given skeletal age-at-death, one first estimates the probability of assigning the skeleton into a specific osteological age-indicator stage. We show that this leads to a statistically valid method for obtaining a paleodemographic profile, and moreover, that valid individual age estimation itself requires a demographic profile and therefore is done subsequent to its construction. Individual age estimation thus becomes the last rather than the first step in the estimation procedure. A central concept of our statistical approach is that of a weight function. A weight function is associated with each osteological age-indicator stage or category, and provides the probability that a specific age indicator stage is observed, given age-at-death of the individual. We recommend that weight functions be estimated nonparametrically from a reference data set. In their entirety, the weight functions characterize the relevant stochastic properties of a chosen age indicator. For actual estimation of the paleodemographic profile, a parametric age distribution in the target sample is assumed. The maximum likelihood method is used to identify the unknown parameters of this distribution. As some components are estimated nonparametrically, one then has a semiparametric model. We show how to obtain valid estimates of individual age-at-death, confidence regions, and goodness-of-fit tests. The methods are illustrated with both real and simulated data.  相似文献

Aim To investigate the importance of vicariance in shaping land snail faunas. Location Three data sets of Mediterranean land snails were analysed: Helicoidea of the Iberian Peninsula and the complete land snail faunas of the central and eastern Aegean Islands and of Israel and Palestine. Methods The vicariance model predicts a clustering of species ranges. We tested for clustering of species ranges with a Monte Carlo simulation. For this simulation we used a null model that generates range data sets in such a way that their range size distribution, their species richness distribution and the spatial autocorrelation of the ranges approximate the parameters in the real data set. Biotic elements (clusters of species ranges) were delimited with model‐based Gaussian clustering. A second prediction of the vicariance model is that closely related species belong to different biotic elements. This was tested with a chi‐squared test. Results The distribution areas of the Iberian Helicoidea and the Israeli/Palestinian land snails are significantly clustered. The same is true for Israeli/Palestinian land snail species belonging to groups with geographically restricted species. However, the clustering is not significant in the complete central and eastern Aegean land snail data set, the Iberian Helicoidea species, and the central and eastern Aegean land snails belonging to groups with geographically restricted species. Contrary to the prediction of the vicariance model, closely related Iberian Helicoidea species and Israeli/Palestinian land snails belong significantly more often to the same biotic element than expected by chance. The null hypothesis that closely related species are homogeneously distributed across biotic elements cannot be rejected only for the data set that includes the Israeli/Palestinian land snails belonging to groups with geographically restricted species. Main conclusions The patterns found in the central and eastern Aegean land snail and the Iberian Helicoidea data sets do not correspond with the predictions of the vicariance model. This indicates that speciation modes other than vicariance were frequent, or that the distribution areas of many species in these faunas were largely modified by extensive post‐speciation dispersal and/or regional extinction. Hardly any possible vicariance events that might have contributed to the origin of the observed biotic elements in the Israeli/Palestinian land snail fauna could be identified. On the contrary, the biotic elements of the Israeli/Palestinian land snail fauna correspond with ecological factors. Vicariance has had only a limited influence on current biogeographical patterns in Mediterranean land snails.  相似文献

The basic and simplest system that one can consider in ecology is a group of individuals of equal age and representing one species, that is, a cohort. This paper is an attempt to show that analysis of such a system may be of great importance to understanding basic ecological problems, such as, intraspecific competition and the dynamics of a single population. It is easy to observe that in even-aged populations individuals differ in weights. A close look can show that weight distributions in even-aged populations may have different skewness. Most common are distributions with coefficients of skewness greater than zero. Sometimes weight distributions are symmetrical or with skewness coefficients less than zero. In a cohort of growing individuals the coefficient of skewness changes with time: most often starting from zero (symmetrical distribution), it increases in time; sometimes after an initial increase it can decrease in the final stage of growth, which is related to an increased mortality of individuals. The rate of change in skewness, and the skewness itself depend on the density of individuals in a cohort and on food conditions. They are greater at higher densities and increase with deteriorating food conditions. Weight distributions are symmetrical at low densities and optimal food conditions. The differences in individual weights measured by variance of weight distributions or coefficient of variation follow the same pattern, but observed changes with time, density and food conditions are not so clear. These conclusions rest upon the review of numerous papers concerning both plants and animals, which is presented in this paper. In the past, the properties of weight distributions in even-aged populations were explained not by interactions between individuals, but rather as a natural outcome of the growth process of non-interacting individuals. The exponential equation of growth, with relative growth rate having a normal distribution in populations, was used to support this hypothesis. Obtained weight distributions were of positive skewness; however, this model, which in fact is able to describe the growth process only in its initial stage, cannot explain the changes of skewness of weight distributions with density and food conditions. A model has been developed which includes competitive interactions among members of even-aged populations to explain observed properties of weight distributions in them. The basic assumption is that intraspecific competition leads to uneven partitioning of resources, which are the object of competition. Functions describing resource partitioning among individuals are included into the model.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)

The shell lengths, dried shell weights, soft tissue wet weights, and soft tissue dry weights were ascertained for noninfected Ilyanassa obsoleta and for the same snail species naturally infected with the following digeneans: Himasthla quissetensis, Zoogonus lasius, Cercaria dipterocerca, Lepocreadium setiferoides, Microphalloides nassicola, Stephanostomum tenue, and Microbilharzia variglandis. Analyses of the data obtained indicate that infection with all of the trematodes listed above causes neither enhanced growth of soft tissues nor accelerated lengthening of the shell. However, snails infected with sporocysts of Z. lasius have significantly heavier shells than do noninfected snails. These data suggest that infection with Z. lasius may have caused enhanced growth in the form of increased calcium deposition in the shell of I. obsoleta, possibly as a result of parasitic castration. In addition, the mean dry weight of the soft tissues of snails infected with M. variglandis, when normalized for shell length, is significantly lower than that of noninfected snails, possibly as a result of parasite-induced pathology. Finally, comparisons among infected snails indicate a trend toward increased soft tissue dry weight in snails infected with L. setiferoides, although the mean dry weight of these snails does not differ significantly from the mean dry weight of noninfected snails.  相似文献

This study was aimed to investigate the effects of both parasitism and environmental stress on the growth, reproduction, and survival of Biomphalaria alexandrina snails. Resource allocation strategies may be influenced by both biotic and abiotic factors. Using the planorbid snail B. alexandrina and Schistosoma mansoni, this hypothesis was examined by raising snails fed the same diet under two stressors (infection and Cd exposure). The snails divided into four groups, uninfected, infected, Cd-exposed uninfected, and Cd-exposed infected snails. Egg production, growth, and survival of the snails were monitored over a 9-week period postinfection. Inhibition of snail reproductive activity by parasitism results in increased snail growth in the first week postinfection, termed gigantism, during which the snail is hypothesized to allocate excess energy normally used for reproduction to somatic growth. Infection status and Cd exposure had significant effects on snail growth and reproduction. The infected and Cd-exposed infected snails exhibiting reduced survival relative to snails of other treatments. It was found that parasite development influenced by Cd exposure. Results of this study suggest that energy allocation patterns are context-dependent in B. alexandrina snails, influenced by infection and Cd exposure.  相似文献

To clarify the growth and distribution ofCarex kobomugi, I surveyed the shoot heights and weights of a population growing in a sand dune at Sindu-ri, Wonbuk-myeon, Taean-gun, in Chungnam Province, Korea. During the growing season, size classes, based on leaf number and shoot heights, shifted, with those in the medium class moving to higher classes. Although the frequencies of those class characters showed a normal distribution curve throughout the season, the frequencies of each class based on shoot weight were evenly distributed in all size classifications. Coefficients of variation were 0.17 for leaf number, and 0.35 for leaf length and weight per plant. The maximum numbers of leaves were 8.16 ± 1.38 per plant for those that were non-flowering, but 2.66 ± 0.62 per plant for those that did flower. Non-flowering plants exhibited withered leaves by mid-September, while withering began in male plants by mid-May and by mid-July for females. At the end of the growing season, the lengths and weights of leaves from non-flowering plants were 47.8 ± 16.6 cm and 1773 ± 628 mg, respectively. When leaf order was considered, leaves increased in size along two-thirds of the ranking, then decreased. In a separate analysis, the growth ofCarex plants was compared with those ofElymus mollis in the same sample quadrats. Biomass of the former accounted for only a small portion of the total biomass per unit area (E. mollis having a dry weight of >76.4 g m-2), but under such competition, the leaf lengths and individual plant weights nonetheless increased forCarex as well.  相似文献

Individual growth patterns in red-spotted masu salmon,Oncorhynchus masou rhodurus, were examined by mark and recapture in a mountain stream, central Japan. The growth pattern varied substantially among individuals of the same age cohort in the stream. Mean absolute growth rates of the individuals were neither significantly different between years, study sections along the stream course, or sexes, but showed significant differences between seasons. No correlation was found between the individual growth rate of fish and the area of pools they inhabited. However, there was considerable growth variation among inhabitants of the same pool. Within a pool, larger individuals grew more rapidly than smaller ones, despite there being no significant relationship between individual growth rates and initial body weights in the stream overall. Individual growth differences probably resulted from growth depensation caused by intraspecific competition within individual pools.  相似文献

The effects of heterotypically conditioned media on the growth and natality rates of Biomphalaria glabrata have been studied under conditions which prevented the assay snails from being stimulated by tactile and visual signals from other snails. It was demonstrated that increasing the density of snails producing the conditioned medium up to a critical threshold resulted in enhancement of growth and natality rates. Further increases in density beyond the optimum level caused a reduction in growth and natality rates. Possible explanations for these effects, which were caused by chemical conditioning, are discussed.  相似文献

It has been shown that heterotypically conditioned media (Het. C.M.) produced by lettuce fed snails maintained at various densities can influence the allometric growth and the rates of specific growth, ingestion, egestion, assimilation and heart beat of isolated assay snails. The growth rate of the assay snails was enhanced by increasing the density of snails producing the Het. C.M. to an optimum threshold of one snail per 100 ml. Further increases in density were followed by a decline in their growth rate. The higher growth achieved by the assay snails in the optimum treatment can be attributed to the fact that their specific growth rates over the first three weeks of the experiment were higher than those of snails in other treatments.
Ingestion and assimilation correlated well with specific growth rates. Percentage assimilation values are high, ranging from 78.4 to 89.6%. The onset of reproductive activity is followed by a dramatic decline from approximately 26 % to 5 % in the gross efficiency of utilization of food for somatic growth.
Snails not receiving Het. C.M. from the outer tanks have a relatively higher ratio of specific growth rate in weight to length than was the case with snails in the other treatments. The heart beat rates of snails in the Het. C.M. produced by snails at densities of 80 to 160 snails per 41 are significantly lower than those of snails at other densities. The possible causation and adaptive significance of these effects are discussed.  相似文献

Giant growth, depletion of energy stores, and inhibition of reproductive activity are striking effects of many trematode parasites on their intermediate snail hosts. Two hypotheses have been put forward to explain these phenomena: (1) host and parasite compete for energy rich and other essential nutrients, with the parasite as the winner, and (2) the parasite intervenes in the endocrine control of reproduction of the snail. These hypotheses were tested in the present study with the Trichobilharzia ocellata/Lymnaea stagnalis association. The snails were infected at a juvenile stage, and release of cercariae started on Day 55 after exposure. It was shown that enhanced growth of infected snails is not paralleled by a greater increase in dry weight, but hemolymph volume does increase, being 35% greater than in the noninfected controls. Control snails, on the other hand, showed an increase in the percentage body dry weight during sexual maturation. The conclusion is that infected snails retain an essentially juvenile body structure. In control snails, glycogen was depleted from the mantle store at the start of egg laying but the onset of cercariae production marked a severe glycogen depletion from the headfoot and the mantle in infected snails, being nearly complete on Day 68 after exposure. The hemolymph glucose concentration was only slightly lower in infected than in control snails and it did not change (in both groups) during glycogen mobilization. This suggests that glycogen mobilization does not result from the snail and the parasite competing directly for metabolites within the hemolymph. Infection inhibited the maturation of the accessory sex organs: there was no increase in the relative wet weights nor in the amounts of DNA and secretion products in the albumin and prostate glands. Infected snails did not lay eggs. It is presumed that the parasite produces one or more agents which intervene in the action of the gonadotrophic hormones. The release of these agents commences at an early stage of infection.  相似文献

We propose a method for fitting growth curves to multiple recapture data of lobsters when the age at first capture is unknown. The von Bertalanffy growth curve is used to model the growth. To account for individual variability, the unknown age in logarithmic scale of a lobster at first capture, the individual asymptotic size, and the individual growth coefficient of its carapace length are modeled as random effects with a trivariate normal distribution. Unlike previously suggested models, the present model permits correlation between the growth coefficient and the age at first capture and can be fitted readily using existing software. The error structures between consecutive recaptures of a lobster are assumed to be a first-order autoregressive process with unequally spaced time points. A comparison between this model and the Fabens growth equation is given. The proposed method is a flexible method and can be applied to fit different growth equations when the age at first capture is unknown.  相似文献

Two groups of Galba truncatula and two groups of Lymnaea natalensis were experimentally infected with Fasciola gigantica to determine if snail species had an influence on the redial burden and cercarial shedding of this trematode when snails of both species were infected with the same isolate of miracidia. In the two groups used for the study of redial burden, the total number of free rediae was significantly higher at day 49 post-exposure in L. natalensis than in G. truncatula. In the groups used for cercarial shedding, the life-span of cercaria-shedding snails and those of infected snails which died without cercarial emission, and the duration of the prepatent period were significantly longer in L. natalensis than those noted in G. truncatula. However, the mean numbers of shed cercariae did not significantly differ and showed no differences in their daily distribution throughout the shedding period. These results demonstrate that G. truncatula might be the principal intermediate host of F. gigantica in Egypt, at least in the areas where this lymnaeid species lives.  相似文献
