Multiple paternity (MP) increases offspring's genetic variability, which could be linked to invasive species' evolvability in novel distribution ranges. Shifts in MP can be adaptive, with greater MP in harsher/colder environments or towards the end of the reproductive season, but climate could also affect MP indirectly via its effect on reproductive life histories. We tested these hypotheses by genotyping N = 2,903 offspring from N = 306 broods of two closely related livebearing fishes, Gambusia holbrooki and Gambusia affinis. We sampled pregnant females across latitudinal gradients in their invasive ranges in Europe and China, and found more sires per brood and a greater reproductive skew towards northern sampling sites. Moreover, examining monthly sampling from two G. affinis populations, we found MP rates to vary across the reproductive season in a northern Chinese, but not in a southern Chinese population. While our results confirm an increase of MP in harsher/more unpredictable environments, path analysis indicated that, in both cases, the effects of climate are likely to be indirect, mediated by altered life histories. In both species, which rank amongst the 100 most invasive species worldwide, higher MP at the northern edge of their distribution probably increases their invasive potential and favours range expansions, especially in light of the predicted temperature increases due to global climate changes. 相似文献

Fifteen male mosquito fish ( Gambusia affinis holbrooki ) were collected in 1989 on the 15th of each month to perform a quantitative histologic study of the annual testicular cycle including a calculation of the gonadosomatic index, testicular volume, and the total volume per testis occupied by each germ cell type. The cycle comprises two periods: spermatogenesis and quiescence. The spermatogenic period begins in April with the development of primary spermatogonia into secondary spermatogonia, spermatocytes and round spermatids. In May, the first spermatogenic wave is completed and the testicular volume begins to increase up to June when the maximum testicular volume and gonadosomatic index are reached. Germ cell proliferation with successive spermatogenetic waves continues until August. In September germ cell proliferation ceases and neither secondary spermatogonia nor spermatocytes are observed. However, spermiogenesis continues until October. In November, spermiogenesis has stopped and the testis enters the quiescent period up to April. During this period only primary spermatogonia and spermatozoa are present in the testis. In addition, a few spermatids whose spermiogenesis was arrested in November are observed. Testicular release of spermatozoa is continuous during the entire spermatogenesis period. The spermatozoa formed at the end of this period (September-October) remain in the testis during the quiescent period and are released at the beginning of the next spermatogenesis period in April. Developed Leydig cells appear all year long in the testicular interstitium, mainly around both efferent ducts and the testicular tubule sections showing S4 spermatids. 相似文献

Even though females are usually more selective in choosing their mates, males are also capable of exercising mate choice. Despite the large body of evidence on the individual features preferred in sexual selection, little attention has been devoted to the first stage of male–female interaction. As poeciliid fish are known to be social, in the wild, initially mate choice may concern a preliminary selection among shoals. Only after this primary choice, males may subsequently direct their attention to a specific mate. We observed spontaneous preference of male mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) when choosing between groups differing in size and sex ratio. In partial agreement with our predictions, males preferred to join a group of females rather than an isolated one (expt 1) and the larger group when two female groups were presented (expt 2). An all‐female group was preferred to a mixed‐sex group (expt 3), whereas no preference was observed when the two mixed‐sex groups differed in the number of males (expt 4) or in the size of the males (expt 5). These results suggest that male mosquitofish are capable of discriminating among different quantities of individuals within a group and use such information to select among groups in order to optimize the likelihood of successful matings. 相似文献

The reproductive biology of three introduced Poeciliidae, Gambusia affinis holbrooki Baird and Girard, Xiphophorus helleri (Günther) and X. maculatus (Heckel) was studied over a 14-month period in Brisbane, Queensland. Photoperiod and water temperature determined the length of the breeding season in G. affinis , which produced up to nine broods between August and March, with the peak of reproductive activity in October. Fecundity was linearly related to body weight in G. affinis (mean fecundity = 22.78 ± 1.02, range = 3–108 offspring per brood).
Xiphophorus helleri bred from August to May, producing eight to nine broods, with peak reproductive activity from October to December. Fecundity was curvilinearly related to body weight (mean fecundity = 60.15 ± 3.8, range = 7–183 offspring per brood. Xiphophorus maculatus bred between September and March, producing five to six broods during the study period. Fecundity was linearly related to standard length (s.l.) (mean fecundity = 27.27 ± 2.4, range = 3–92 offspring per brood). Although the reproductive strategy of the three species differs, all have the capacity to build up large populations in south-eastern Queensland. Their present distributions and relative abundance are discussed. 相似文献

Vitellogenin is a phospholipoglycoprotein precursor of egg yolk. In mature female fish, vitellogenin is synthesized and secreted by the liver in response to circulating estrogens. Vitellogenin is normally undetectable in the blood of male fish, but can be induced by exposure to compounds possessing estrogenic activity. Thus, the presence of vitellogenin in blood of male fish can serve as a useful biomarker for assessing previous exposure to estrogenic compounds. In the present study, we report identification and purification of vitellogenin in the mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis). Anti-vitellogenin immune serum was generated and used to develop an immunoblot assay for detection of vitellogenin. A combination of immunoblotting and densitometric scanning was used to assess the time- and dose-dependent effects of 17alpha-ethynylestradiol on vitellogenesis in male G. affinis. The results indicate that changes in the level of vitellogenin in mosquitofish blood can be reliably detected by the immunoblot assay, and that the mosquitofish may be a useful bioindicator organism for detecting estrogenic contamination of the aquatic environment. 相似文献

The empirical reasons for the persistent rarity of a genotype are typically complex and tedious to identify, particularly in nature. Yet rare morphs occur in a substantial fraction of phenotypic polymorphisms. A colour polymorphism has persisted for decades in the eastern mosquitofish, yet why this is so remains obscure. Here, I report the results of (1) intensive sampling at 45 natural sites to obtain the frequency distribution of the melanic (black) mosquitofish morph in Florida, (2) predation trials, conducted independently in mesocosms, with three different predatory species and (3) two mark-recapture studies, conducted in nature. This work (1) documents the rarity of melanic mosquitofish in nature, (2) demonstrates that melanic males experience a selective advantage over silver males in the presence of predators, (3) indicates no difference in the colour morphs' survival at a natural site essentially devoid of these predators, although suggesting a higher rate of recapture for melanic males at a site rife with predators. Overall, selective predation appears to contribute to the persistence of the melanic morph, despite its rarity in nature. 相似文献

Identifying targets of selection is key to understanding the evolution of sexually selected behavioral and morphological traits. Many animals have coercive mating, yet little is known about whether and how mate choice operates when these are the dominant mating tactic. Here, we use multivariate selection analysis to examine the direction and shape of selection on male insemination success in the mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki). We found direct selection on only one of five measured traits, but correlational selection involving all five traits. Larger males with longer gonopodia and with intermediate sperm counts were more likely to inseminate females than smaller males with shorter gonopodia and extreme sperm counts. Our results highlight the need to investigate sexual selection using a multivariate framework even in species that lack complex sexual signals. Further, female choice appears to be important in driving the evolution of male sexual traits in this species where sexual coercion is the dominant mating tactic. 相似文献

In many poeciliid fishes, large males which court females coexist with small males which sneak-copulate. It is unclear whether these two tactics represent two evolutionarily stable strategies or if sneaking is a conditional strategy adopted by small, unattractive males. We studied the success of sneaky copulation by looking for sperm in the gonoduct of females after they were kept for 48 h with a male. A logistic regression analysis showed that the probability of a female being inseminated increased with female length and decreased with male length. The length of the male relative to that of the female was the best predictor of success. This result was confirmed using virgin females, thereby excluding any possible confounding effect due to the release of sperm from previous copulations. Sperm counts suggested that large males do not compensate for their reduced copulatory success by releasing larger sperm numbers. Behavioural data indicate that the advantages to small males are twofold: they have a greater chance to approach females from behind without being detected, and manoeuvre better when inserting the gonopodium into the female''s gonoduct. The selective advantage of small size might explain male dwarfism in poeciliids. Our results also suggest that small males adopting the sneaky tactic may be as successful as large males adopting courtship, and that alternative mating strategies may be maintained by negative density-dependent selection. 相似文献

Eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) are native to the southeastern United States but notoriously invasive elsewhere, and are aggressive predators in ecosystems they inhabit. Information on dispersal behavior is needed to better understand mosquitofish spread upon introduction and potential means to mitigate that spread. We experimentally tested the effects of shallow water depths (3–24 mm) and obstacles (leaf litter) on mosquitofish dispersal behavior, plus a range of conditions relevant to field situations. Mosquitofish dispersed significantly faster in deeper water (p < 0.001) but some dispersed in only 3 mm water depth (i.e., one-half average body depth). Wetland and upland leaf litter at natural densities strongly interfered with mosquitofish dispersal behavior. Based on our results, introduced mosquitofish spread rapidly given unimpeded dispersal corridors (e.g., mowed ditches), and may do so at rates >800 m/day. Also, consistent lack of sexual dimorphism in dispersal behavior indicates that mosquitofish spread is not strongly dependent on female poeciliid reproductive biology. Our results support designation of mosquitofish as highly invasive and suggest that barriers to mosquitofish spread must obstruct dispersal pathways as shallow as 3 mm depth. 相似文献

An investigation of the effects of mosquitofish (Gambusia affinis) predation was conducted in 12 experimental ponds in southern California over a period of 10 months.Gambusia essentially eliminatedDaphnia pulex andCeriodaphnia sp. populations, reducedDiaptomus pallidus andKeratella quadrata populations, had little impact onCyclops vernalis, and caused large increases inK. cochlearis, Polyarthra sp.,Synchaeta sp., andTrichocerca spp. populations and in total phytoplankton.Gambusia caused a decrease in the PIE (probability of interspecific encounter) of the planktonic crustaceans and an increase in the PIE of the planktonic rotifers. Hemiptera, such as neustonicMicrovelia sp. and nektonicBuenoa sp. andNotonecta sp., andHyla regilla tadpoles were absent from fish ponds but sometimes abundant in control ponds.Gambusia caused higher pH and oxygen levels, presumably via its effect on the phytoplankton. The impact ofGambusia on the pond ecosystems was less in winter, when fish numbers and feeding rates were low, than in summer. Results of other fish-plankton studies are summarized in tabular form. A model is proposed to account for variation in the calanoid/cyclopoid ratio; evidence is summarized suggesting that in general calanoids are more susceptible to predation by predaceous zooplankters while cyclopoids are more susceptible to fish predation. Some parallels are drawn between the effects ofGambusia predation and those of insecticide treatments. 相似文献

Experiments were conducted to determine the adaptability of mosquito fish to various salt concentrations. Mosquito fish, Gambusia affinis , (total length (T.L.) 27–37 mm) were subjected to abrupt and gradual changes from fresh water to various salinities (S). Low mortality (10%) occurred when the fish were transferred from fresh water (S = 0·5‰) to 50% sea water (S = 19·5‰ Through gradual adaptation 65·0% of the fish were able to tolerate 100% sea water for 7 days. After a 7 -day stay in sea water, fish were readapted to fresh water during a 3-h period. The results indicate that they were well able to tolerate the abrupt change. Through a gradual adaptation fish were also able to tolerate salinities ranging from 39·0‰ (100% sea water) to 58·8‰ 相似文献

The two coefficients of the von Bertalanffy growth model [maximal standard length (LS∞) and initial growth rate (a)] were determined in eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki in the most northern area where it is established (Rennes, Brittany, France). The estimated mean LS∞ was 57·7 and 25·0 mm in females and males, respectively. The value of a was identical for both males and females before the males diverged from the females by slowing down their growth, probably because of the onset of puberty. The sexual competition reported in males would be responsible for higher interindividual variability of LS∞ in males than in females. a was positively correlated with water temperature and could be modulated by fish density and length at birth. Moreover, interindividual variability of a was influenced in a complex way by interactions between water temperature, length at birth and fish density. When compared to the data from studies in G. holbrooki inhabiting their native range or the southern introduced range, the present results suggest that the thermal tolerance domain for growth was altered and that males exhibited a shorter length at sexual maturity and a shorter LS∞ in the population established in Rennes. 相似文献

We studied age, growth and reproduction of an introduced poeciliid, Gambusia holbrooki (Agassiz, 1859), in the Ebro delta marshes. Maximum ages observed were 2+ in females and 0+ in males. Growth commenced in March and continued until September. Females reached greater sizes, had a higher rate of growth and lived longer than males. The largest sizes found were 63 mm versus 32 mm . Multiple spawning occurred throughout the reproductive cycle (from May to September). The average brood size per female reached its maximum in July in the parental cohort (86 embryos/) and in August in the offspring cohort (29 embryos/). After reproduction the parental cohort decreased drastically. The relationship between fecundity (F) and total length (mm) was calculated for each month of the reproductive period. Sex-ratio deviated significantly from unity.Viviparity, several broods and large larvae provide G. holbrooki with several advantages over oviparous species. The capacity to adjust its life history to a particular environment could explain the life history differences between those in the Ebro delta and other populations. 相似文献

The pineal organ of Gambusia affinis was studied via light and electron microscopy. The cell types studied included photoreceptor cells, supporting cells, and a third cell type. The photoreceptor cells, which appear to form clusters, are divided into four regions: outer segment, inner segment, cell soma, and synaptic pedicle. Synaptic ribbons are commonly observed in the synaptic pedicle. The supporting cells separate the photoreceptor cells from the thick basal lamina that surrounds the entire pineal organ. The supporting cells show highly organized membrane formations, some lipid-like inclusions, and a diplosome. One of the centrioles gives rise to an invaginated cilium. The third cell type is observed infrequently and appears to be located mainly in the vicinity of the outer segments. The morphological characteristics of this cell type are similar to those of phagocytic cells. The ultrastructural features of the pineal organ of G. affinis are compared with those of other teleosts. 相似文献

We studied the diet of the eastern mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki with in situ experimental mesocosms located in a shallow lake. Different nutrient concentrations (phosphorus and nitrogen) and fish population densities were tested. Our results confirm that it is a planktivorous species, with also a great ingestion of algae and detritus. Nutrient fertilization caused almost no changes in this species feeding behavior, but larger mosquitofish stocks induced a shift to zooplanktivory and a decline in detritivory. When macrophytes were present, the predation effect focused on zooplankton and plant‐associated animals, otherwise predation on bottom macroinvertebrates increased. Females preyed upon almost all groups more intensely, including detritus. Males and juveniles did not overlap diet, the former being more selective on ostracods, while juveniles consumed detritus, rotifers and cladoceran. Our data support the idea that mosquitofish can cause important top‐down effects in shallow lakes under a wide variety of ecological conditions, being an important zooplanktivore in both turbid and plant‐dominated shallow lakes especially in the Mediterranean zone, where high temperatures and absence of piscivores promote maintenance of its populations during the whole year. Genetic analyses contribute to studies of biological invasions by mapping the origin and dispersal patterns of invasive species occupying new territories. Using microsatellite loci, we assessed the genetic diversity and spatial population structure of mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) that had invaded Spanish watersheds, along with the American locations close to the suspected potential source populations. Mosquitofish populations from the Spanish streams that were studied had similar levels of genetic diversity to the American samples; therefore, these populations did not appear to have undergone substantial losses of genetic diversity during the invasion process. Population structure analyses indicated that the Spanish populations fell into four main clusters, which were primarily associated with hydrography. Dispersal patterns indicated that local populations were highly connected upstream and downstream through active dispersal, with an average of 21.5% fish from other locations in each population. After initially introducing fish to one location in a given basin, such dispersal potential might contribute to the spread and colonization of suitable habitats throughout the entire river basin. The two-dimension isolation-by-distance pattern here obtained, indicated that the human-mediated translocation of mosquitofish among the three study basins is a regular occurrence. Overall, both phenomena, high natural dispersal and human translocation, favor gene flow among river basins and the retention of high genetic diversity, which might help retain the invasive potential of mosquitofish populations. 相似文献

Polymorphism and pair formation in the mosquitofish Gambusia holbrooki (Pisces: Poeciliidae) 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Synopsis Pair formation was studied in a polymorphic population of Gambusia holbrooki in a brackish drainage canal in Southern Florida. All females and the majority of males were gray colored and only 5% of the males were black spotted. A small fraction of the population formed pairs, composed of a female and a male that swam synchronously and close together for several minutes. During pairing the male often achieved gonopodial contact with the female. Black spotted males occurred in pairs ten fold more frequently than expected under random pairing. The major behavioral mechanism accounting for the disproportionate occurrence of spotted males in pairs is, probably, the preference of females for these males. 相似文献
