Abstract In Brazil, a severe dry season lasting for approximately 5 months and frequent fires make life difficult for cerrado insects. In certain aspects, the cerrado can be considered to be an understudied ecosystem; even basic information such as knowledge about the annual peak in abundance of different insect orders is unknown. Insect abundance patterns have only been investigated for a few groups in the cerrado region. Thus, our study concerns the temporal distribution of insect abundance in the savanna‐like vegetation of the central Brazilian cerrado (sensu stricto) in Distrito Federal. The region has a well‐defined, long dry season between May and September. The insects were sampled by window, malaise tent and pitfall traps within 1 year. We used a multiple linear regression to analyse the relationship between abundance of insects of each order and climate variables. A total of 50 127 individuals from 15 orders was collected. The orders were Coleoptera (26%), Hymenoptera (23%), Diptera (20.5%), Isoptera (20%), Homoptera (4%), Lepidoptera (4%), Orthoptera (1.5%) and Hemiptera (1%). The abundance of Diptera, Homoptera, Lepidoptera and Orthoptera was randomly distributed over time, Isoptera peaked in the first half of the wet season, Coleoptera and Hemiptera in the second half of the wet season and Hymenoptera in each season. A significant correlation was found only between Coleoptera and delayed climatic variables. There were no obvious trends that might help explain the abundance patterns observed. The study provides baseline information about phenological patterns of insect abundance and permits evaluation of this group as a resource for various food chains and different trophic levels.  相似文献

Five new Stenella species were found on native cerrado plants. Stenella erythroxyli-campestris, S. erythroxyli-suberosi and S. erythroxylicola were associated with plant species belonging in the family Erythroxylaceae; S. cyrtopodii was found infecting the rare Cyrtopodium eugenii (Orchidaceae), and S. ocoteae occurred on Ocotea sp. (Lauraceae). Finally Parastenella callisthenis-fasciculatae was collected on a Vochysiaceae (viz. Callisthene fasciculate) endemic to the cerrado.  相似文献

We report the occurrence of microfilariae in wild birds of a cerrado area in northern Brazil (Tocantins State). Analyses of 166 passerine birds belonging to 46 species and 17 families captured between 2006 and 2008 revealed that 11 individuals (6.6%) were hosts for microfilariae. Two bird species, Formicivora grisea and Formicivora rufa (Thamnophilidae), were identified as hosts for microfilariae for the first time, and had high intensities of microfilaremia (65 and 107 in 100 microscopic fields, respectively). The prevalence and intensity of microfilariae described in the present study are among the highest reported for wild bird communities in the neotropics.  相似文献

The Amazon is a globally important system, providing a host of ecosystem services from climate regulation to food sources. It is also home to a quarter of all global diversity. Large swathes of forest are removed each year, and many models have attempted to predict the spatial patterns of this forest loss. The spatial patterns of deforestation are determined largely by the patterns of roads that open access to frontier areas and expansion of the road network in the Amazon is largely determined by profit seeking logging activities. Here we present predictions for the spatial distribution of standing value of timber across the Amazon. We show that the patterns of timber value reflect large-scale ecological gradients, determining the spatial distribution of functional traits of trees which are, in turn, correlated with timber values. We expect that understanding the spatial patterns of timber value across the Amazon will aid predictions of logging movements and thus predictions of potential future road developments. These predictions in turn will be of great use in estimating the spatial patterns of deforestation in this globally important biome.  相似文献

We present the results of a 5-year examination of variation in the stable carbon isotope composition () of three C3 graminoid species from a Sandhills prairie: Agropyron smithii, Carex heliophila and Stipa comata. Although consistent species-specific patterns for mean were seen, there was also significant and substantial among-year and within-season variation in . A smaller contribution to variation in came from topographic variation among sampling sites. Effects of species, year, season and topography contribute to variation in in an additive manner. An association between climate and exists that is consistent with previous work suggesting that reflects the interplay between photosynthetic gas exchange and plant water relations. Within the growing season, the time over which integrates plant response to the environment ranges from days to months.  相似文献

Documented patterns of specialization and species interactions often omit plasticity in resource use across space and time, yet such variation is an important part of species interactions. To examine temporal variation in resource use, we compared species‐ and community‐level patterns of host plant use by folivorous caterpillars between the dry and rainy seasons in four preserved areas of cerrado vegetation in the Distrito Federal, Brazil. We sampled plants and caterpillars in 10 m circular plots monthly from March 2010 to March 2011. At the community level, we found a significant increase in the mean diet breadth of dry season caterpillars relative to those collected in the rainy season. Families and species of moths varied in diet breadth, but most exhibited a seasonal expansion. In particular, intraspecific comparisons showed a 30% increase in the number of host plants used in the dry season compared to the rainy season. These results provide a clear example of how temporal variation in resource use is heterogeneous, and more generalized patterns of resource use can emerge from studies at large temporal scales. Thus, seasonal or annual heterogeneity may obscure ecologically relevant specialized interactions that occur at smaller scales.  相似文献

Understanding dispersal ability of an invasive species is crucial for describing its potential spread. Despite this, we still know little about the dispersal potential of many invasive species. We explored dispersal spectra in Pinus strobus, an invasive tree in sandstone areas in Central Europe. We studied dispersal of the species using distribution of self-sown trees in the field. We compared these observed data with theoretical dispersal curves derived using information on wind speed, seed terminal velocity and tree height. Finally, we fitted various empirical dispersal curves to the observed data. All the analyses based on the observed field data were done for the whole dataset, and for the dataset divided by habitat types and age categories of the self-sown trees. P. strobus seeds can disperse up to 757.5 m from the source. The observed data fall within the confidence intervals of the predictions based on a negative exponential model. When comparing different dispersal functions fitted to the data, it was not easy to decide which of the dispersal curves provides the overall best fit. This was because different functions were the best predictors of different parts of the dispersal curve. We suggest that future studies should provide not only empirical fitted dispersal curves but also observed data and provide estimates of confidence intervals. Such information will provide insights into the reliability of the dispersal estimates in general and help to evaluate the predictive power of the different models.  相似文献

We analysed microhabitat use by the rodents Calomys tener, Necromys lasiurus and Thalpomys lasiotis and the factors that may influence their abundances in “murundu” grasslands (open fields with termite mounds) at Aguas Emendadas Ecological Station, Planaltina, Federal District, Brazil. Two grids with 100 sampling points were established and traps were placed at each intersection of the grid, where five microhabitat variables were also measured. Rodents were trapped from June through October 2008. Microhabitat explained 21% of the variation in community structure, with grass density and the number of termite mounds explaining most of the variation. Necromys lasiurus was most often captured in areas with dense grasses, whereas T. lasiotis and C. tener were most often in areas less dense with grasses.  相似文献

With the aim of recognizing the commonest leaf pattern found in the woody flora of the cerrado (the Brazilian savanna) we analyzed the leaf anatomy of 30 representative species. The leaves are mostly dorsiventral and hypostomatic and covered by trichomes and a thick layer of wax and cuticle; the vascular bundles are surrounded by a sheath of fibers. The mesophyll has a developed palisade tissue, dispersed sclerified cells and idioblasts bearing crystals and phenolic compounds. We compared the results with those reported for other species (60 species) from the same biome and for the families that the studied species belong. The present study suggests that the xeromorphism observed for the cerrado leaves is related to the evolutionary history of this biome, since its first floristic elements must have faced deficient water conditions as well as the consequent soil acidity and toxicity. Therefore we may infer that the leaf anatomical pattern here observed was already present in the first elements of the cerrado and was selected to guarantee the survival of those species in the new environment. Furthermore, the xeromorphic features present in those leaves continue nowadays to help the plants protecting themselves from the different biotic and abiotic factors they are subjected to.  相似文献

Edge influence, characterized by differences in ecosystem characteristics between the edge and the interior of remnants in fragmented landscapes, affects a variety of organisms and ecosystem processes. An important feature that may be affected by edges is the amount of plant litter, which provides important habitat for a large variety of organisms and influences ecological processes such as fire dynamics. We studied edge influence on plant litter and fine woody debris in the cerrado of São Paulo state, south‐eastern Brazil. We collected, sorted, dried and weighed plant litter along 180 m‐long transects perpendicular to three savanna and eleven forest edges adjacent to different anthropogenic land uses, with four to five transect per edge. There tended to be less biomass of the finer portions of fine woody debris at both savanna and forest edges. Graminoid litter at savanna edges was greater than in the corresponding interior areas, whereas other litter portions were either unaffected by edges or did not show consistent patterns in either savanna or forest. Edge influence was usually restricted to the first 20 m from the edge, was not influenced by edge characteristics and exhibited no clear differences between savanna and forest areas. Several mechanisms may have led to the variable patterns observed including variation in the plant community, plant architecture, and invasive species. The edge‐related variation in plant litter may putatively lead to, for example, increased fire frequency and intensity at the savanna edges and altered trophic dynamics at forest edges; the mechanisms and consequences of this edge influence should be addressed in future studies.  相似文献

Summary Among thirty species belonging to seventeen families common in the cerrado region of central Brazil, eight species belonging to three families were found to accumulate aluminium in their leaves in considerable amounts (4,310 to 14,120 mg/kg on dry weight basis) from a dark red latossol which is strongly-acid and low in available nutrient cations. The aluminium-accumulating species areMiconia ferruginata (DC.) Cogn.,Miconia pohliana Cogn. (Melastomataceae);Palicourea rigida H. B. K. (Rubiaceae);Qualea grandiflora Mart.,Qualea multiflora Mart.,Qualea parviflora Mart. (Vochysiaceae);Vochysia elliptica (Spr.) Mart., andVochysia thyrsoidea Pohl (Vochysiaceae). High levels of aluminium in the leaves of these plants were not associated with low foliar levels of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, manganese, zinc, or phosphorus as compared to the other species which do not accumulate aluminium. In spite of the low pH and the low base saturation of the soil the aluminium-accumulating species seem to have an efficient mechanism for absorbing all cations from the soil.  相似文献

Legume pulvini have a clearly delimited endodermis, whose variable content has been associated with the velocity and type of leaf movement: pulvini in leaves with fast nastic movement contain starch grains; pulvini in leaves with slow nastic movements have calcium oxalate crystals as well as starch grains in the endodermis. However, the studies carried out to date have involved few legume species. This study therefore purported to examine the consistency of this hypothesis in other legumes. Thus, the structure and content of the pulvinus endodermal cells of nine legumes of the Brazilian cerrado, with different types and velocities of leaf movement, were investigated: slow nyctinastic and heliotropic movements ( BAUHINIA RUFA, COPAIFERA LANGSDORFFII, SENNA RUGOSA - Caesalpinioideae; ANDIRA HUMILIS and DALBERGIA MISCOLOBIUM - Faboideae; STRYPHNODENDRON POLYPHYLLUM - Mimosoideae), slow heliotropic movement ( ZORNIA DIPHYLLA - Faboideae), and fast seismonastic and slow nyctinastic and heliotropic movements ( MIMOSA RIXOSA and MIMOSA FLEXUOSA - Mimosoideae). Samples were prepared following standard plant anatomy and ultrastructure techniques. The endodermis of all the species contains starch grains. In the species displaying only slow movements, calcium oxalate prismatic crystals were observed in addition to starch grains, except in ZORNIA DIPHYLLA. In conclusion, oxalate crystals occur only in endodermal cells of pulvini that display slow movements, while starch grains are always present in pulvinus endodermal cells of plants with any kind of movement.  相似文献
