The material was been collected in 1972 during a field trip performed by the research vessel of the National Institute of Limnology, Argentina, along the main course of the Paraná River from the Santa Fe harbor down to the Río de la Plata. Sixty sampling stations were covered. In the lower course of the river sampling was carried out in the Paraná Guazú and the Paraná Bravo branches down to its confluence with the Uruguay River, and the Paraná de las Palmas and the Rio de la Plata down to the Buenos Aires harbor. Water samples for chemical analysis were collected and some physical parameters were measured.

Due to the characteristics of the part of the river under consideration, we have divided it into four sectors.

Sixty six species were seen. The rotifers were always the most important. Trichocerca rattus was the predominant species.

In temperate regions, populations of Aedes aegypti survive the cold season in the egg stage. In the present work, we studied the cold‐season mortality of Ae. aegypti eggs and their subsequent hatching pattern in Buenos Aires city. Eggs were exposed during the winter season (three months) in three neighborhoods located along a gradient of distance toward the Río de la Plata River, coincident with a gradient of activity of Ae. aegypti. Results showed mortalities lower (30.6%) than those from tropical regions during the dry season. Significant differences were detected among the egg mortalities of each site with a maximum value at the site nearest the Río de la Plata River (50%), and a minimum value at the most continental site (9%). Post‐experimental hatching response of eggs differed between sites, with the highest proportion of hatched eggs during the first immersion in the site nearest to the river and the lowest proportion in the most continental site. The hatching proportion also differed between age classes, with older (early‐laid) eggs hatching later than new (late‐laid) ones. Our results provide the first information of Ae. aegypti egg mortality in temperate South America and support the hypothesis that differences in egg mortality are associated with abundance patterns of Ae. aegypti in Buenos Aires city.  相似文献

The whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) is a demersal teleostean fish inhabiting the Atlantic Ocean from northern Venezuela to southern Argentina. In terms of biomass, the whitemouth croaker is the dominant sciaenid in the Río de la Plata and constitutes an important renewable resource for the Uruguayan and Argentinean fisheries. In the present study, analyzed were the gametogenesis and histological gonadal cycle in female and male whitemouth croakers collected at the Uruguayan coast of the Río de la Plata, between March 1997 and February 1998. In addition, the experimental conditions required to obtain mature viable gametes and achieve in vitro fertilization in this species were investigated. These studies indicate that the whitemouth croaker inhabiting the Río de la Plata is a multiple spawner, which reproduces on the Uruguayan coast between October and February. In vitro studies showed that following activation, sperm remain motile for up to 40 min, and under optimal dilution conditions that they retain a high fertilization capability for 15 min. Taken together these results could support future aquaculture research and exploitation of this species.  相似文献

We established the presence of Eucinostomus at the Río de la Plata Estuary (36°17′74′′S–56°46′68′′W). The report is based on specimen of 191.6 mm. total length, captured in shallow, warm and brackish water with sandy bottom. This is southernmost record for the Southwest Atlantic Ocean, and appears related with an event of low discharge of the Río de la Plata.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to compare the morphometric and meristic characteristics of whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, from two different areas: the Río de la Plata (to the west) and the oceanic coast (to the east) during the summer spawning season (December 1999), and to determine whether they constitute one demographic unit or independent management groups. Data from 966 whitemouth croakers were analysed for stock discrimination between areas. The results provided further evidence that the two cohorts differ significantly in these areas. However, an important misclassification of individuals was found. The morphometric variables that contributed more to discriminate the groups were mouth length, head length, horizontal eye diameter and length of the pectoral fin. Misclassified individuals from the western and eastern groups have shown that whitemouth croaker do not display high fidelity to their known spawning grounds. The well‐classified and misclassified individuals for the western and eastern groups were found to be mature and in spawning condition, representing between 82–84%, and 66–88%, respectively. These results support the hypothesis of contemporary gene flow between the Río de la Plata and coastal Atlantic populations. Despite the misclassified individuals, morphometrics presented in this study and genetic information originating from other studies show differences between Río de la Plata and oceanic groups, and predict the two‐stock hypothesis. Problems related arising from these mixed population groups and potential implications for managements are discussed.  相似文献

AIMS: To determine the presence of Vibrio cholerae in different areas of Argentina in three sample types, to determine the composition of planktonic communities in areas at which this pathogen was detected and to characterize the virulence properties and antimicrobial resistance of the recovered environmental isolates. METHODS AND RESULTS: Water and plankton samples were collected in marine, brackish and freshwater environments. Vibrio cholerae non-O1, non-O139 was isolated in 36.1% of the samples analysed. The micro-organism was detected in freshwater but not in marine or brackish samples. No relationship was found between isolation of V. cholerae and presence of any species of plankton. All the isolates presented very similar virulence profiles by PCR, lacking ctxA and tcpA El Tor and containing hlyA (98.7%), rtxA (99.0%), toxR (98.7%) and stn-sto (1.9%). Resistance to ampicillin was found in both Tucumán (21%) and Buenos Aires isolates (45%). CONCLUSIONS: We identified two geographic areas in Argentina where V. cholerae was present: freshwaters of the rivers from Tucumán and the Río de la Plata. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: The identification of V. cholerae strains in the environment, carrying both virulence factors and resistance to antimicrobial agents, highlight the need for a continuous and active surveillance of this pathogen.  相似文献

During 1985–1986, twelve rivers and streams belonging to the Delta Sub-basin (Río de la Plata estuary Basin, Argentina) were sampled for microfauna associated with fifteen species of aquatic macrophytes. A total of 171 species were determined. Ciliates and rotifers were most abundant. Dissimilarities in the colonization of the macrophytes were demonstrated. Water level and current influenced the periphyton community and contributed to the differences observed.Scientific Contribution N 398 of the Instituto de Limnología Dr. Raúl A. Ringuelet. This article performed a comprehensive assessment of the structure and functioning of the Río de la Plata estuary and adjacent shelf ecosystem, including the effect of fishing. A formerly implemented 37 trophic groups’ mass-balance model (Ecopath) was used to (1) evaluate the particular role of individual biotic components on the ecosystem; (2) characterize the ecosystem in terms of aquatic food web theory; and (3) assess the role of diverse fishing fleets on the ecosystem. Our results indicate a trophic structure and functioning common to other estuaries, where outstanding primary production exceeds consumption, and detritus accumulates in the system. Moreover, our analysis revealed an elevated total system throughput, herbivory outweighing detritivory, and an intermediate state in terms of ecosystem growth and development. Fisheries analyses showed widespread impacts produced by industrial bottom trawl fleets, and specific impacts produced by artisanal fisheries over several groups. Unexpectedly, the evaluation of the effects of fishing showed minor ecosystem consequences by the loss of secondary production and suggests exploitation rates at sustainable levels. This study sets up the basis for temporal ecosystem-level monitoring of the state of the Río de la Plata estuary and adjacent shelf ecosystem.  相似文献

In the Argentine Pampa fertile soils were originally covered by grasslands, but at present are intensively cultivated. We assessed the specific composition of the fish assemblage of El Pescado stream and compared it with that recorded in 1991–1993, when land use in the watershed consisted in natural pastures. The persistence of the fish assemblage between the two studies was rather high: 0.76. Abundance, biomass and species richness were higher during drought periods. Connectivity with the huge Río de la Plata hydrographic system seems the most important contribution to the high and stable species richness of El Pescado stream.  相似文献

A report and an updated list with comments on the species of freshwater molluscs of Argentina which covers an area of 2 777 815 km2 is presented. Distributions of Gastropoda and Bivalvia families, endemic, exotic, invasive as well as entities of sanitary importance are also studied and recommendations on their conservation are provided. Molluscs related to the Del Plata Basin have been thoroughly studied in comparison to others areas of the country. This fauna exhibits relatively the biggest specific richness and keeps its affinity with the fauna of other regions of the basin in areas of Paraguay and Brasil. The 4 500 records of molluscs considered in this paper arise from the study of the collections of Museo Argentino de Ciencias Naturales "Bernardino Rivadavia", Buenos Aires; Museo de La Plata, La Plata and Fundación "Miguel Lillo", Tucumán. These institutions keep very important collections of molluscs in southern South America. Field information has recently been obtained and localities cited by other authors are also included in the data base. Until today, 166 species have been described, 101 belonging to 10 families of Gastropoda and 65 to 7 of Bivalvia. Families with highest specific richness are Lithoglyphidae (22) and Sphaeriidae (25), respectively. The number of endemic species (those present only in Argentina) by family is: Gastropoda: Ampullariidae (1), Cochliopidae (10), Lithoglyphidae (11), Thiariidae (3), Chilinidae (11), Lymnaeidae (2) and Physidae (2?); Bivalvia: Hyriidae (1?); Etheriidae (1?) and Sphaeriidae (10). Families with a distribution that comprise almost the whole country are: the Sphaeriidae and the gastropods Cochliopidae, Chilinidae and Lymnaeidae. Families Erodonidae and Solecurtidae (Bivalvia) were registered in mixohaline environments from Buenos Aires province. Gastropod families Thiaridae and Glacidorbiidae show a very restricted distribution. The rest of the families are present mainly in the center and north of the country. Species of sanitary interest are the propagators of: schistosomiasis -Biomphalaria peregrina, B. straminea y B. tenagophila, Planorbidae-, fasciolasis -Lymnaea viatrix and L. columnella, Lymnaeidae- and dermatitis -Chilina gibbosa and C. fluminea, Chilinidae. Invasive species are: Corbicula fluminea (Corbiculidae) and Limnoperna fortunei (Mytilidae). The construction of new areas for the protection and conservation of the high risk endemic species of freshwater molluscs is a priority. It is necessary to give special attention to the species of the patagonic mountain range and of the mesopotamic area of the Del Plata Basin.  相似文献

Biological interactions between invasive and resident species are perceived as a key factor mediating impacts in invaded ecosystems, although symbiotic interactions have received relatively little attention. To evaluate the association between the invasive clam Corbicula fluminea and its oligochaete symbiont Chaetogaster limnaei, we conducted laboratory assessments of prevalence and intensity of infection, external and internal macroscopic alterations, and histological analyses of the gills of uninfected and infected clams collected from the shores of the Río de la Plata estuary in Argentina. To evaluate potential ramifications of physical alterations on physiological traits and host fitness, we conducted respiration experiments on the same clams. Worm prevalence was higher in smaller than large clams. While no macroscopical alterations were detected, several histopathological changes were observed in the gills of infected clams. Infected clams had significantly higher metabolic rates than uninfected conspecifics and smaller clams had higher metabolic rates than larger conspecifics. Increased host metabolic rates, even at very low infections intensities, were likely a compensatory response to the stress caused by gill damaged inflicted by the oligochaetes. The relationship between C. limnaei and invasive C. fluminea in Río de la Plata best fits as parasitism.

Here we report the first observations of the rapa whelk Rapana venosa massively bio-fouling immature green turtles Chelonia mydas. From November 2004 to July 2011, we examined 33 green turtles with rapa whelks attached to their carapaces in Uruguayan waters. The number of attached rapa whelks ranged from 1 to 49 individuals, representing up to 20 % of turtle weight. This previously unrecorded interaction may be of global importance to green turtles conservation because (a) immature green turtles from distant breeding populations utilize insular and coastal waters of the Río de la Plata estuary and Atlantic coast of Uruguay as developmental and foraging habitats and (b) attached whelks may reduce green turtle fitness by reducing buoyancy, increasing drag, and causing severe injuries to the carapace.  相似文献

Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) (Bivalvia) invaded Argentina through the Río de la Plata estuary around 1990 and is presently established throughout five South American countries as a dominant component of the benthic fauna and a major nuisance for industry and power plants. Between 1997 and 2006 we monitored the reproductive activity of L. fortunei through weekly measurements of planktonic larvae in six South American water bodies: Río de la Plata estuary, Paraná and Carapachay rivers, Salto Grande, Itaipú and Embalse de Río Tercero reservoirs. Mean larval densities varied between 4000 and 7000 individuals m?3; except in the reservoirs of Itaipú (450 ind. m?3) and Salto Grande (869 ind. m?3), where the mussel was first recorded shortly before our surveys, and upstream dispersal is limited (Salto Grande). In all cases, reproductive output decreases during the winter. At four of the six sites surveyed larval densities were comparatively high for 8.8–10.2 months per year. A lower food supply is possibly responsible for the shorter reproductive period of 5.9 months at Embalse. At Salto Grande, there is a well‐defined mid‐summer drop in larval numbers, coinciding with blooms of cyanobacteria. We propose that, in addition to temperature, two major factors may regulate the reproductive activity of L. fortunei: (i) the availability of food; and (ii) blooms of toxic cyanobacteria, significantly shortening the otherwise very long reproductive period. This information is important for the design of antifouling programmes involving the use of molluscicides, and has potential for reduced biocide use. These results provide supporting evidence for some fundamental ecological theories of invasions discussed here.  相似文献

We report on the first sightings of the invasive Rapa Whelk Rapana venosa in Maldonado Bay (Punta del Este Harbor and Gorriti Island) using in vivo, underwater observations and video surveys. The species was first detected in the Río de la Plata (Uruguay and Argentina) in 1999, and by 2004 it had extended its local distribution to Punta del Este at the eastern boundary of the estuary. Observations performed by SCUBA diving showed that R. venosa is preying on native mussels Mytilus edulis and Brachidontes spp., and that formerly abundant mussel beds are being seriously depleted due to a combination of human extraction, habitat deterioration and predation by the Rapa Whelk.  相似文献

This paper studies the migration pathways and ranges of a dominant detritivorous fish Prochilodus lineatus along pollution gradients in the Río de la Plata basin using multivariate analysis of biochemical and pollutant data. Biochemical composition (water, ash, lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, neutral lipids classes and fatty acids), aliphatic hydrocarbons (ALI), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB), linear alkylbenzenes (LAB) and organochlorine pesticides (OClP) were determined in muscle samples of P. lineatus collected in Metropolitan Buenos Aires, the lower Paraná River (Paraná: 200-1000 km from Buenos Aires) and the middle Paraná and Paraguay Rivers (North: 1000-1400 km north). Biochemical variables and pollutants exhibited large variability [Lipids 1.1-89.5% wet mass; ALI 1.4-413; LABs not detectable (n.d.)-115.2; PCBs n.d.-27.9; OClPs n.d.-11.8 μg g(-1) dry mass], due to the contrast of Buenos Aires with North fish. Fish from Buenos Aires were fatty (lipids 24.7 ± 12.3% wet mass), enriched in 18 carbon fatty acids and severely contaminated (ALI 152.4 ± 72.3; LABs 65.1 ± 26.4; PCBs 15.2 ± 6.8; OClPs 1.8 ± 1.9 μg g(-1) dry mass mean ±S.D.). In contrast, fish from North were lean (4.1 ± 3.1% wet mass), enriched in long chain (>20 carbons) polyunsaturated fatty acids, with average one to two orders of magnitude lower pollutant levels (ALI 41.2 ± 51.9; PCBs 2.2 ± 3.5; LABs 8.8 ± 21.1; OClPs 0.67 ± 0.75 μg g(-1) dry mass mean ±S.D.). Paraná showed intermediate values in all variables, denoting the mixing of different fish stocks. Based on principal component analysis, 14 outliers from 60 North and Paraná samples (representing 26 from 108 individual fish) were identified as pertaining to the Buenos Aires group with very similar lipid and pollutant levels. Data suggest that P. lineatus migrates a highly variable distance, exceeding 800-1000 km in multiple spatial and temporal overlapping ranges. Chemometric analysis of biochemical and pollutant data effectively discriminates fish according to the chemical signature acquired by detritus feeding in pristine and contaminated urban or industrial areas.  相似文献

Argentinean Patagonia is inhabited by people that live principally in urban areas and by small isolated groups of individuals that belong to indigenous aboriginal groups; this territory exhibits the lowest population density of the country. Mapuche and Tehuelche (Mapudungun linguistic branch), are the only extant Native American groups that inhabit the Argentinean Patagonian provinces of Río Negro and Chubut. Fifteen autosomal STRs, 17 Y-STRs, mtDNA full length control region sequence and two sets of Y and mtDNA-coding region SNPs were analyzed in a set of 434 unrelated individuals. The sample set included two aboriginal groups, a group of individuals whose family name included Native American linguistic root and urban samples from Chubut, Río Negro and Buenos Aires provinces of Argentina. Specific Y Amerindian haplogroup Q1 was found in 87.5 % in Mapuche and 58.82 % in Tehuelche, while the Amerindian mtDNA haplogroups were present in all the aboriginal sample contributors investigated. Admixture analysis performed by means of autosomal and Y-STRs showed the highest degree of admixture in individuals carrying Mapuche surnames, followed by urban populations, and finally by isolated Native American populations as less degree of admixture. The study provided novel genetic information about the Mapuche and Tehuelche people and allowed us to establish a genetic correlation among individuals with Mapudungun surnames that demonstrates not only a linguistic but also a genetic relationship to the isolated aboriginal communities, representing a suitable proxy indicator for assessing genealogical background.  相似文献

The franciscana dolphin, Pontorporia blainvillei, is an endemic cetacean of the Atlantic coast of South America. Its coastal distribution and restricted movement patterns make this species vulnerable to anthropogenic factors, particularly to incidental bycatch. We used mitochondrial DNA control region sequences, 10 microsatellites, and sex data to investigate the population structure of the franciscana dolphin from a previously established management area, which includes the southern edge of its geographic range. F‐statistics and Bayesian cluster analyses revealed the existence of three genetically distinct populations. Based on the microsatellite loci, similar levels of genetic variability were found in the area; 13 private alleles were found in Monte Hermoso, but none in Claromecó. When considering the mitochondrial DNA control region sequences, lower levels of genetic diversity were found in Monte Hermoso, when compared to the other localities. Low levels of gene flow were found between most localities. Additionally, no evidence of isolation by distance nor sex‐biased dispersal was detected in the study area. In view of these results showing that populations from Necochea/Claromecó, Monte Hermoso, and Río Negro were found to be genetically distinct and the available genetic information for the species previously published, Argentina would comprise five distinct populations: Samborombón West/Samborombón South, Cabo San Antonio/Buenos Aires East, Necochea/Claromecó/Buenos Aires Southwest, Monte Hermoso, and Río Negro. In order to ensure the long‐term survival of the franciscana dolphin, management and conservation strategies should be developed considering each of these populations as different management units.  相似文献
