Ecological hypotheses of plant–insect herbivore interactions suggest that insects perform better on weakened plants and plants grown under optimal conditions are less damaged. This study tested the hypothesis that the colonization and oviposition rates by pests with different feeding strategies and levels of specialization are affected in different ways by two conditions commonly faced by commercially grown plants–water deficit and application of kaolin sprays, a reducer of abiotic plant stressors. We used four major pests of cotton as insect herbivore models. Three were chewing Lepidoptera: Alabama argillacea (Hüb.), a monophagous pest on cotton; Heliothis virescens (Fabr.), which is polyphagous, but with cotton as a primary host; and Chrysodeixis includens (Walk.), which is polyphagous, with cotton as secondary host. The fourth pest was a sap-sucking species, the polyphagous whitefly Bemisia tabaci (Gen.). In both choice and no-choice trials, the three chewing pests oviposited significantly less upon water-stressed plants; the greatest effect was observed for C. includens (>90 % reduction in oviposition under choice and >58 % under no-choice conditions). In contrast, the sap-sucking B. tabaci exhibited statistically more colonization and oviposition on water-stressed plants. Application of kaolin sprays reduced colonization and oviposition by all herbivore species tested, irrespective of irrigation regime and feeding strategies.  相似文献

Fundulus grandis (Baird and Girard), the Gulf Killifish, is an abundant species throughout the marshes of the northern Gulf of Mexico. Its wide distribution and high site fidelity makes it an ideal indicator species for brackish and salt marshes, which experience a variety of anthropogenic disturbances. Despite the ecological, commercial, and scientific importance of F. grandis, age determination methods have not been validated and little is known of its growth pattern. By combining a tag-recapture study with a chemical marker to stain otoliths, we validated an ageing method for F. grandis adults (49–128 mm TL) using whole sagittal otoliths and determined growth rates of recaptured individuals in winter (n = 58) and summer (n = 36) in Louisiana. Mean somatic growth in length was significantly greater during the winter (0.085 mm d?1) than summer (0.054 mm d?1). In contrast, mean otolith growth was significantly greater in summer (1.37 μm d?1) than winter (0.826 μm d?1). The uncoupling of somatic and otolith growth may be primarily attributed to warm summer temperatures, which led to enhanced otolith growth while simultaneously reducing somatic growth. Fundulus grandis was aged to a maximum of 2.25 years. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth model were estimated as: L  = 87.27 mm, k = 2.43 year?1, and t 0 = ?0.022. These findings reveal essential age and growth information for F. grandis and provide a benchmark to evaluate responses to environmental disturbances.  相似文献

We investigated feeding and oviposition behavior of the Asian citrus psyllid, Diaphorina citri, when exposed to the foraging trails of the convergens ladybird beetle, Hippodamia convergens. Diaphorina citri females feeding on citrus leaves directly exposed to the ladybird adults or treated with trail extract excreted significantly less honeydew droplets than controls. The trail chemicals of the ladybird beetle also decreased oviposition by D. citri females on citrus. In a no-choice experiment, D. citri females preferred to oviposit on control flush and plants than those with ladybird trail-extract treatments. In two-choice experiments, 68.0% of D. citri released into cages exhibited strong selection preference for settling and eventual oviposition on control plants than plants treated with ladybird trail extract. Diaphorina citri eggs were found on all new leaf flush of control plants, whereas only 29.5% of flush on treatment plants were selected for oviposition. The trail chemical deposited by the convergens ladybird beetle elicits repellency of D. citri feeding and oviposition. Therefore, the trail chemicals my contain components that could be useful for behavior-based management of D. citri and HLB disease by reducing psyllid feeding and oviposition.  相似文献

The cotton mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis (Tinsley) and Cotton leaf curl Multan virus (CLCuMV), serious threats to economic crops and garden plants, have invaded southern China and widely infected Hibiscus rosa-sinensis. Whether an inter-species connection has facilitated the invasion process is unclear. In this study the interaction between P. solenopsis and H. rosa-sinensis infected with CLCuMV was investigated in the laboratory. We observed that 1st and 2nd instar nymphs of P. solenopsis preferred to feed on healthy H. rosa-sinensis leaves, whereas 3rd instar nymphs and female adults had no preference between healthy and virus-infected H. rosa-sinensis leaves. The developmental time of each P. solenopsis developmental stage increased significantly after feeding on infected H. rosa-sinensis leaves (p < 0.05). In particular, the development time for 2nd instar female and male nymphs and 3rd instar female nymphs increased by approximately twofold. The generation time of female mealybugs increased from 25.84 d on healthy H. rosa-sinensis to 32.12 d when feeding on CLCuMV-infected H. rosa-sinensis, and the survival rate decreased from 71.04 % on healthy H. rosa-sinensis to 5.80 % on infected plants. Nymph survival was most affected by feeding on infected plants. Additionally, the fecundity of female mealybugs feeding on infected H. rosa-sinensis decreased by 47.8 %. Thus, feeding on CLCuMV-infected H. rosa-sinensis significantly decreased the biological fitness and invading and colonizing abilities of P. solenopsis.  相似文献

We present the first report on Euphoria lurida (Fabricius) (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae) infestation on safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.), a crop of industrial and medicinal importance. Between September and October 2013–2015 in Paraná State, we observed E. lurida adults feeding on safflower plants from the inception of flower head formation onwards, over an area of approximately 400 m2. Losses in the productivity of infested plants were estimated between 15 and 50%. The damage was characterized by perforations in the upper portion and at the base of the developing flower heads or open flowers, resulting in withering and abortion of the reproductive structures.  相似文献

The soybean looper Chrysodeixis includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) is known as an important pest of leguminous plants worldwide. In Brazil, this pest species is gaining importance to producers of the common bean Phaseolus vulgaris L. (Fabaceae) because it limits field production of the crop. Chemical control is still the primary method of insect control. However, due to the possible harmful effects of pesticides to humans and the environment, alternative and less aggressive practices are being investigated. For this reason, the use of resistant plant genotypes represents a valuable tool in insect control. This study evaluated the biological aspects of larvae of C. includens confined to 14 bean genotypes under laboratory conditions (26 ± 2°C; 65 ± 10% RH; photoperiod of 14 h L:10 h D). The duration of the instars, total duration of the larval phase, consumption while in the larval phase, weight of the fifth instar larvae, larval viability, duration of the pre-pupal and pupal phases, pupal weight, pupal viability, pupal deformity, caterpillar-to-adult cycle, duration of the pre-oviposition and oviposition periods, and total number of viable eggs per female were evaluated. The genotypes “IAC Boreal,” “IAC Harmonia,” and “IAC Formoso” expressed antibiosis, prolonging the caterpillar-to-adult cycle and reducing the larval viability; however, each of these genotypes also experienced high leaf consumption. “IAC Jabola” expressed moderate levels of antibiosis and/or antixenosis (feeding), while the genotype “BRS Horizonte” expressed antixenosis (feeding). The data obtained with IAC Boreal, IAC Harmonia, IAC Formoso, IAC Jabola, and BRS Horizonte are promising and may help with the improvement of programs aimed at managing C. includens damage to this leguminous agricultural crop.  相似文献

Exotic pathogen invasions can change host eco-evolutionary interactions and possibly create an evolutionary trap when the pathogen generates mismatches between developmental phenology and reproductive cues. Taylor’s checkerspot butterfly (Euphydryas editha taylori), is an endangered species of western North America with 80 % of the extant populations dependent on an exotic host, Plantago lanceolata. Survey of occupied, recently extinct, and unsuccessful butterfly reintroduction sites spanning 4° of latitude revealed widespread disease on P. lanceolata caused by Pyrenopeziza plantaginis. This fungal pathogen, new to North America, reduces the standing crop of P. lanceolata foliage throughout the winter post-diapause larval feeding period. However, disease is absent when adult butterflies and pre-diapause larvae are active. Diseased plants were frequent in Taylor’s checkerspot populations with a history of persistence, but >90 % of the host plants in these populations had initiated new leaves within the first few weeks of post-diapause larval feeding. Conversely, host plants in recently extinct and unsuccessfully reintroduced populations were severely diseased, >66 % mean foliage necrosis/plant, and <23 % had initiated new leaves. Feeding choice trials with 25 larvae indicated that new leaves were strongly and consistently preferred by post-diapause larvae over all other available leaf types, both diseased and non-diseased. Because the influence of disease on post-diapause larval food resources is developmentally disassociated from oviposition, P. plantaginis invasion appears to have triggered an evolutionary trap for Plantago-dependent populations of Taylor’s checkerspot.  相似文献

Although many fish species are known to feed on jellyfish, only a few quantitative studies on this subject have been conducted in the field or laboratory. We combined field observations and feeding experiments to quantitatively evaluate the potential feeding capability of the black scraper Thamnaconus modestus on giant jellyfish Nemopilema nomurai in a jellyfish-abundant area. Underwater observations revealed that shoals of T. modestus fed voraciously on jellyfish when the jellyfish were close to the fish’s seaweed habitat. Gut contents of field-collected T. modestus almost exclusively consisted of jellyfish. In tank trials, feeding activity of black scraper was high when light intensity was between about 1.1 lx and 50 × 103 lx. The estimated feeding speed of T. modestus on the jellyfish in the Sea of Japan when the jellyfish bloom occurred was 10.0 ± 2.0 times fish body weight per day. The results support the prediction that T. modestus and probably other coastal medusivorous fishes have a substantial capability to eliminate jellyfish blooms. Considering that they are highly dependent on seaweed bed, protection of such habitats for these medusivores may be the most cost-efficient control method for jellyfish blooms.  相似文献

In response to injury, plants produce volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that usually differ depending on the type of damage they have suffered (e.g., mechanical damage, herbivory, and oviposition). The objectives of this study were to identify and compare the bouquet of volatiles emitted by passion vine plants (Passiflora edulis) after injury caused by mechanical damage (MD), herbivory (HB), and oviposition (OV) by the lepidopteran, Heliconius erato phyllis. Following injury, extracts of plant emissions were collected from each treatment every 24 h for three days and were analyzed by GC and GC/MS. Results show that plants emitted 12 volatiles before and after damage, namely terpenoids, ketones, and aldehydes. Although no significant differences were detected between the three treatments individually, if the entire bouquet of volatiles is analyzed, samples collected at 24 h were different from samples collected at 48 and 72 h. However, terpenoid emission increased significantly in HB plants after 24 h. HB plants emitted approximately 6300, 50, 46, 11, 6, and 3.6 times more (3E,7E)-4,8,12-trimethyl-1,3,7,11-tridecatetraene, (E)-4,8-dimethyl-1,3,7-nonatriene (DMNT), (E)-β-ocimene, (Z)-β-farnesene, (E)-β-caryophyllene, and farnesane, respectively, compared to control plants. OV plants displayed a peak of emission of (E)-β-ocimene after 72 h, which distinguished them from HB plants. MD plants showed a general increase of VOCs versus undamaged control plants. Furthermore, it has been suggested that (E)-β-ocimene may be sequestered by larvae of H. erato phyllis as a component of the odoriferous bouquet of the abdominal scent glands present in adult males, which play a role in sexual communication.  相似文献

African pythons (Pythonidae) and large vipers (Bitis spp.) act as definitive hosts for Armillifer armillatus and Armillifer grandis parasites (Crustacea: Pentastomida) in the Congo Basin. Since the proportion of snakes in bushmeat gradually increases, human pentastomiasis is an emerging zoonotic disease. To substantiate the significance of this threat, we surveyed snakes offered for human consumption at bushmeat markets in the Kole district, Democratic Republic of the Congo, for the presence of adult pentastomids. In Bitis vipers (n = 40), Armillifer spp. infestations exhibited an 87.5% prevalence and 6.0 median intensity. Parasite abundance covaried positively with viper length, but not with body mass. In pythons (n = 13), Armillifer spp. exhibited a 92.3% prevalence and 3.5 median intensity. The positive correlations between parasite abundance and python length or mass were statistically nonsignificant. Ninety-one percent of A. grandis were discovered in vipers and 97% of infected vipers hosted A. grandis, whereas 81% of A. armillatus specimens were found in pythons and 63% of infected pythons hosted A. armillatus. Thus, challenging the widespread notion of strict host specificity, we found ‘reversed’ infections and even a case of coinfection. In this study, we also gathered information about the snake consumption habits of different tribal cultures in the area. Infective parasite ova likely transmit to humans directly by consumption of uncooked meat, or indirectly through contaminated hands, kitchen tools or washing water.  相似文献

This study of animal–plant interaction focused on the impact of oviposition by an insect on the leaves of Prunus avium (cherries). We examined whether the oviposition by Caliroa cerasi affects leaf mechanical and spectral traits in P. avium. Three cultivars of P. avium were studied. Infested leaves had from 1 to 18 eggs and exhibited higher leaf dry mass per area (LMA) than leaves without eggs. Leaf dry weight and LMA were positively correlated with egg number per leaf. Infested leaves tended to have higher number of trichomes. Leaf thickness and material and structural resistance tended to increase in infested leaves. The reflectance across all wavelengths (500–700 nm) in leaves with larger number of eggs was higher compared to leaves without eggs. Photosynthetic performance was reduced and oxidative activity was increased in leaves with eggs. Extrafloral nectaries increased with increasing the number of eggs per leaf and thus play an important role in defense against herbivores by providing nectar rewards that attract their depredators. These responses to oviposition may be beneficial for the plants in terms of resistance to feeding larvae.  相似文献

A feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of different levels of dietary Lactobacillus plantarum on hemato-immunological parameters and resistance against Streptococcus iniae infection in juvenile Siberian sturgeon Acipenser baerii. Fish (14.6 ± 2.3 g) were fed three experimental diets prepared by supplementing a basal diet with L. plantarum at different concentrations [1 × 107, 1 × 108 and 1 × 109 colony-forming units (cfu) g?1] and a control (non-supplemented basal) diet for 8 weeks. Innate immune responses (immunoglobulin (Ig), alternative complement activity (ACH50) and lysozyme activity) were significantly higher in fish fed the 1 × 108 and 1 × 109 cfu g?1 L. plantarum diet compared to the other groups (P < 0.05). Furthermore, fish fed on various levels of L. plantarum significantly showed higher red blood cell (RBC), hemoglobin (Hb), white blood cell (WBC) and monocyte compared to those of the control group (P < 0.05). At the end of the feeding experiment, some fish were challenged with S. iniae to quantify the level of disease resistance. The mortality after S. iniae challenge was decreased in fish fed a probiotic. These results indicated that dietary supplementation of L. plantarum improved immune response and disease resistance of Siberian sturgeon juvenile.  相似文献

Soils are often complex habitats inhabited by a wide range of organisms, some harmful to plants and others beneficial, for example by attacking harmful organisms. Beneficial organisms include predatory mites, some of which have been commercialized for biological control of pest insects and mites. The objective of this work was to evaluate under laboratory condition the suitability of representative soil insect and mite pests, especially Aceria tulipae (Keifer), as prey to the soil-inhabiting predatory mites Proctolaelaps bickleyi (Bram) and Cosmolaelaps brevistilis (Karg). Predation, oviposition and survivorship of recently molted adult females of the predators were assessed in the dark in rearing chambers at 25 ± 1 °C and 75 ± 3% RH. Predation rate by P. bickleyi on A. tulipae was significantly higher than that by C. brevistilis (196.3 vs. 71.0 specimens/day). About 482 A. tulipae were preyed by each P. bickleyi at each day, when 500 A. tulipae were made available daily to the predator. Oviposition rate on that prey was also higher for P. bickleyi (4.2 eggs/day). For C. brevistilis, the highest level of oviposition was on Caliothrips phaseoli (Hood) (1.2 eggs/day). Survivorship was always higher for C. brevistilis (≥ 70%), given its ability to remain alive relatively long even in the absence of prey. High rates of survivorship of P. bickleyi were observed on A. tulipae, Bradysia matogrossensis (Lane) and Protorhabditis sp. Promising results were obtained for P. bickleyi on A. tulipae and even on other prey, justifying the conduction of complementary studies under field condition.  相似文献

Myzus persicae (Sulzer) is a polyphagous aphid that causes chlorosis, necrosis, stunting, and reduce growth rate of the host plants. In this research, the effects of Zinc sulfate and vermicompost (30%), Bacillus subtilis, Pseudomonas fluorescens, Glomus intraradices, G. intraradices × B. subtilis, and G. intraradices × P. fluorescens compared to control was investigated on the growth characters of Capsicum annuum L. and biological parameters of M. persicae. Different fertilizers caused a significant effect on growth characters of C. annuum and biological parameters of M. persicae. The highest plant growth was observed on Zinc sulfate and B. subtilis treated plants, and the lowest was on control. Increase in the amount of specific leaf area (SLA) (0.502 mm2 mg?1) was significantly higher in the B. subtilis than other fertilizer treatments. The longest (10.3 days) and the shortest (5.3 days) developmental times of M. persicae nymphs were observed on 30% vermicompost and Zinc sulfate treatments, respectively. The lowest adult longevity periods of M. persicae (11.2 and 11.3 days) were observed on G. intraradices × B. subtilis and 30% vermicompost treatments, respectively, and the longest ones (16.4 days) on Zinc sulfate. The highest rate of nymphal mortality and the lowest amount of nymphal growth index (NGI) were recorded on 30% vermicompost. The nymphs reared on Zinc sulfate treatment had the lowest rate of nymphal mortality and the highest amount of NGI. Thus, amending the soil with 30% vermicompost had a significantly negative effect on the biological parameters of M. persicae that can be used as an ecological control tactic for this pest.  相似文献

Sweet sorghum is a climate smart crop with multiple uses. The crop is susceptible to attack by the spotted stemborer, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe). This causes deadheart formation, leading to lodging of plants and consequent high economic losses. Lack of stable sources of resistance make any genetic enhancement through breeding difficult. We report a study to build up host plant resistance using transgenic technology by introducing two different classes of Bt genes (cry1Aa and cry1B) into two elite sweet sorghum genotypes of India (SSV84 and RSSV9). We devised tissue culture methods to suit the genotypes of our interest, SSV84 and RSSV9, and employed two methods of genetic transformation: the particle bombardment and in planta method of Agrobacterium. Modification of in vitro culture methods involved subculture every 3 days in the initial stages of culture and the use of precultured embryos as target tissues. For the in planta method, a floral dip for 1 h in Agrobacterium suspension supplemented with l-cysteine and Tween-20 was used. Sixteen transgenic events were generated; inheritance, integration and stable expression of the transgenes till the T4 generation were confirmed. The amount of Bt Cry1Aa protein at 25–30 days of growth ranged from 24.8 to 72.8 ng/g of fresh leaf tissue. We recorded 78.4 % larval mortality, reduced leaf damage (3.0 out of 9.0) and reduced feeding (41.0 %) over the controls in insect feed assays. Stable inheritance and expression in the in planta-derived transgenics are presented.  相似文献

Cotton fiber is the basic raw material used in the textile industry. The fiber yield is severely affected by a number of biotic and abiotic factors, such as insects, viruses, drought and salinity. Drought is a major factor that negatively impacts the yields and quality of cotton fiber. Promoters that respond to stress conditions and up-regulate transgenes are of great significance in crop improvement using genetic engineering approach. Although dehydration-responsive gene promoters, such as RD22 and RD29 from Arabidopsis, have been characterized, not much information is available regarding stress-responsive promoters from Gossypium hirsutum, which accounts for approximately 90 % of cultivated cotton. In this study, we isolated and characterized the promoter of a dehydration-responsive gene (GhRDL1) from G. hirsutum using Agrobacterium-mediated transformation in tobacco and cotton. Transgenic tobacco plants expressing uidA under the GhRDL1 promoter showed GUS activity in the trichomes. Also, GUS expression was observed to some extent in leaf, stem and floral tissues. Similar results were observed when GhRDL1 promoter was tested in transgenic cotton. Most importantly, our study showed that the GhRDL1 promoter is up-regulated in the presence of polyethylene glycol that creates water stress under invitro conditions. Thus, the GhRDL1 promoter may find its usefulness in the development of stress-tolerant cotton and other crop species in the near future.  相似文献

Maize is an economically important crop in northern Mexico. Different fungi cause ear and root rot in maize, including Fusarium verticillioides (Sacc.) Nirenberg. Crop management of this pathogen with chemical fungicides has been difficult. By contrast, the recent use of novel biocontrol strategies, such as seed bacterization with Bacillus cereus sensu lato strain B25, has been effective in field trials. These approaches are not without their problems, since insufficient formulation technology, between other factors, can limit success of biocontrol agents. In response to these drawbacks, we have developed a powder formulation based on Bacillus B25 spores and evaluated some of its characteristics, including shelf life and efficacy against F. verticillioides, in vitro and in maize plants. A talc-based powder formulation containing 1 × 109 c.f.u. g?1 was obtained and evaluated for seed adherence ability, seed germination effect, shelf life and antagonism against F. verticillioides in in vitro and in planta assays. Seed adherence of viable bacterial spores ranged from 1.0 to 1.41 × 107 c.f.u. g?1. Bacteria did not display negative effects on seed germination. Spore viability for the powder formulation slowly decreased over time, and was 53 % after 360 days of storage at room temperature. This formulation was capable of controlling F. verticillioides in greenhouse assays, as well as eight other maize phytopathogenic fungi in vitro. The results suggest that a talc-based powder formulation of Bacillus B25 spores may be sufficient to produce inoculum for biocontrol of maize ear and root rots caused by F. verticillioides.  相似文献

Most perennial herbaceous plants are able to reproduce vegetatively as well as sexually. Sometimes, such plants may lose the capacity for sexual reproduction. We have studied the case of sterility in triploid populations (2n = 3x = 45) of Gladiolus tenuis M.Bieb. in a considerable part of its area of distribution. Initially, we recorded the presence of a large clone of G. tenuis to the east of the Volga River, as a result of isozyme analysis. We also used AFLP fingerprinting to genotype 55 samples from 10 populations of G. tenuis and one population of the closely related G. imbricutus L. This analysis revealed an extremely low genetic diversity in sterile triploid populations of G. tenuis and a rather high genetic diversity in fertile tetraploid populations (2n = 4x = 60) over most of the area of this species. Genetic distances between fertile and sterile populations of G. tenuis were similar to those between different species of gladioli. It appears that a single sterile genotype has spread vegetatively over 800 km, propagating by daughter corms. The study of the reproductive features of G. tenuis suggests that the cause of sterility may be self-incompatibility between individuals of the clone.  相似文献

A study was conducted to estimate the effect of UV-C (200–280 nm) radiation stress on growth and physiochemical responses of Camelina sativa L. cv. Calina (EC643910; a potential bio-fuel crop) for its possible mass multiplication at high-altitude under high radiations. The germination percentage in terms of radicle protrusion and opening of cotyledonary leaves significantly decreased 13.98 and 27.8 %, respectively, as compared to control. However, no significant change was observed in growth parameters including root and shoot lengths and fresh biomass. The relative membrane leakage rate and lipid peroxidation as a malondialdehyde contents significantly increased with the value of ~99 % and 0.17 mM g?1 FW, respectively, under UV-C stress. Also, the proline, glycine betaine and total soluble sugars contents increased by ~330, ~440, ~144 %, respectively, as compared to control. Among non-enzymatic antioxidants, the ascorbic acid and total phenol contents significantly increased by ~284 and ~537 %, respectively, as compared to control. Likewise, the activity of antioxidant enzyme, ascorbate peroxidase, guaiacol peroxidase and catalase increased under UV-C stress with the value of 1.03, 0.05 and 0.06 µmol mg protein?1 min?1, respectively. In addition, the chlorophyll a, b and total (a + b) contents decreased by ~180, ~151 and ~147 %, respectively, as compared to control. In contrast, the total carotenoids and anthocyanin contents increased by ~160 and ~184 %, respectively. Our findings suggest the adaptive growth and physiochemical responses of C. sativa under UV-C stress. Therefore, it may be recommended for large-scale cultivation at high-altitude under intense natural radiations for future bio-fuel production.  相似文献
