During three rice-growing seasons in Uruguay, field experiments were conducted to study the contribution of cyanobacterial inoculation and chemical N fertilization to rice production. Neither grain yield nor fertilizer recovery by the plant were affected by inoculation with native cyanobacterial isolates. A low fertilizer use efficiency (around 20%) was observed when labelled (NH4)2SO4 was applied at sowing. Recovery of applied 15N by the soil–plant system was 50%. Inoculation did not modify 15N uptake by the plant when the fertilizer was three-split applied either. The total N-fertilizer recovery was higher when the fertilizer was split than when applied in a single dose. Plant N-fertilizer uptake was higher when the fertilizer was applied at tillering. Uptake of 15N from cyanobacteria by rice was studied in a greenhouse pots experiment without chemical nitrogen addition. Recovery of 15N from labelled cyanobacteria by rice in greenhouse growth conditions was similar to that of partial recovery of (NH4)2SO4 applied at sowing in the field. Cyanobacterial N mineralization under controlled conditions was fast as cyanobacterial N was detected in plants after 25 days. Moreover 40 days after inoculation non-planted and inoculated soil had more inorganic N than the non-inoculated one.  相似文献

Two experiments were performed to examine the effects of inoculation of barley cv. Tokak 157/37 with indigenous and non-indigenous bacterial strains. A greenhouse experiment was carried out with 75 strains isolated from Erzurum Plain and Pasinler Plain soils of Turkey, and the 6 non-indigenous strains. The 41 strains had significant positive effects on tiller number per plant, 8 strains on plant height, one strain on dry matter yield, and 24 strains on plant protein concentration. In the second experiment, the response of barley to 20 treatments (9 indigenous strains, 6 non-indigenous strains, 4 levels of N, and a control) was investigated in Erzurum Agricultural Experiment field in 2000 and 2001. Inoculation with certain indigenous and non-indigenous strains clearly benefited growth and increased the yield of field grown barley. On average of years, inoculation with Strain No. 19, Strain No. 39, Strain No. 73, Strain No. 82, BA-7, BA-142 and M-13 increased total biomass by 29.4–15.1%, grain yield by 26.6–17.7%, and total N-yield by 32.7–20.6%, as compared to the control. Indigenous Strain No. 19 was superior to all other treatments in terms of grain yield and N-yields. The higher efficacy of combining Strain No. 19 and Tokak 157/37 indicates the possibility of improved associations using olden and common cultivar and indigenous bacteria. In conclusion, Strain No. 19 seems to be suitable inoculant for barley cultivation in areas such as in Erzurum conditions.  相似文献

Azosprilla were collected in wheat fields from subtropical and temperate soils of central Nepal at various elevations. Different wheat cultivars responded positively and significantly in grain yield, grain N-yield, and total N-yield in plant shoots to the inoculation with Nepalese isolate Azospirillum 10SW. Nepalese wheat cv. Seto responded significantly better with Azospirillum 10SW than with the Brasilian isolate A. lipoferum Sp 108 st, a strain which was found highly efficient in earlier experiments with German wheat cultivars, especially cv. Turbo. Yield of Turbo was increased by inoculations of both Azospirillum strains too, but it showed no significant differences depending from the inoculum used. The higher efficacy of combining Azospirillum 10SW and Seto, both collected from the same locality, indicates the possibility of improved associations using traditional cultivars and local bacteria. ei]{gnR O D}{fnDixon}  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to establish conditions for micropropagation of cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus L.). Cultures were initiated from meristem cultures. When cultures were subcultured from clusters of 3–5 shoots, approximately 70 and 50 shoots were produced per cluster within 6 weeks at 8.9 μM BAP for the female cv. Fjellgull and the male cv. Apollen, respectively. Addition of 5.5 μM GA3 reduced the number of shoots. Auxins (IBA, NAA) promoted root development in vitro, but inhibited formation of new shoots. However, as much as 85% of shoots rooted without auxin treatment when planted in a peat:sand (80:20 v/v) mixture. Some of the male plants regenerated from shoot tip cultures flowered in the greenhouse within a year after transfer to soil.  相似文献

Response of two spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars, salt tolerant SARC-I and salt sensitive Potohar, to different concentrations of NaCl was examined under glasshouse conditions. Eighteen-day-old plants of both the lines grown in sand culture were irrigated with 0 (control), 80, 160 or 240 mM NaCl in full strength Hoagland's nutrient solution. Shoot fresh and dry masses, and leaf area per plant of SARC-I at the vegetative stage, were significantly greater than those of cv. Potohar at higher salt concentrations, however, relative growth rate (RGR) of cv. Potohar was significantly higher than that of SARC-I. SARC-I had higher net photosynthetic rate (PN), stomatal conductance (gs) and transpiration rate (E) than cv. Potohar at the vegetative stage, but the cultivars did not differ significantly in water-use efficiency (PN/E), intrinsic water use efficiency (PN/gs), and intercellular/ambient CO2 concentration ratio. At the grain development stage, SARC-I had significantly higher PN and gs in the flag leaf than cv. Potohar under salinity. SARC-I was superior to cv. Potohar with respect to number of grains per spike, number of grains per spikelet, mean grain mass, and grain yield per plant at all NaCl concentrations.  相似文献

Bacterial wilt (Ralstonia solanacearum) of tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum, causes a considerable amount of damage to tomato in Southern China. Biological control is one of the more promising approaches to reduce the disease incidence and yield losses caused by this disease. Based on antagonistic activity against R. solanacearum and three soil-borne fungal pathogens as well as biocontrol efficacy in the greenhouse, two bacterial strains Xa6 (Acinetobacter sp.) and Xy3 (Enterobacter sp.) were selected out of fourteen candidates as potential biocontrol agents. In order to find a suitable antagonist inoculation method, we compared the methods of root-dipping with soil-drenching in the aspects including rhizocompetence, biocontrol efficacy, and effect of promoting plant growth under greenhouse conditions. The drenching treatment resulted in a higher biocontrol efficacy and plant-yield increase, and this method was also easier to operate in the field on a large scale. Field trials were conducted for further evaluation of these two antagonistic strains. In both greenhouse and field experiments, the strain Xy3 had a better control effect against bacterial wilt than Xa6 did, while Xa6 caused higher biomass or yield increases. As recorded on the 75th day after treatment in two field experiments, biocontrol efficacy of Xy3 was about 65% in both field trials, and the yield increases caused by Xa6 were 32.4 and 40.7%, respectively, in the two trials. This is the first report of an Acinetobacter sp. strain used as a BCA against Ralstonia wilt of tomato.  相似文献

The combined effects of water status, vapour pressure deficit (VPD), and elevated temperature from heading to maturity were studied in barley. Plants growing at high VPD, either under well-watered or water deficit conditions, had higher grain yield and grain filling rate than plants growing at low VPD. By contrast, water stress decreased grain yield and individual grain dry matter at any VPD. Water regime and to a lesser extent VPD affected 13C of plant parts sampled at mid-grain filling and maturity. The differences between treatments were maximal in mature grains, where high VPD increased 13C for both water regimes. However, the total amount of water used by the plant during grain filling did not change as response to a higher VPD whereas transpiration efficiency (TE) decreased. The net photosynthetic rate (P N) of the flag leaves decreased significantly under water stress at both VPD regimes. However, P N of the ears was higher at high VPD than at low VPD, and did not decrease as response to water stress. The higher correlation of grain yield with P N of the ear compared with that of the flag leaf support the role of ear as the main photosynthetic organ during grain filling under water deficit and high VPD. The deleterious effects of combined moderately high temperature and drought on yield were attenuated at high VPD.  相似文献

The phytochromes are a family of red/far-red light absorbing photoreceptors that control plant developmental and metabolic processes in response to changes in the light environment. We report here the overexpression of Arabidopsis thaliana PHYTOCHROME A (PHYA) gene in a commercially important indica rice variety (Oryza sativa L. Pusa Basmati-1). The expression of the transgene was driven by the light-regulated and tissue-specific rice rbcS promoter. Several independent homozygous sixth generation (T5) transgenic lines were characterized and shown to accumulate relatively high levels of PHYA protein in the light. Under both far-red and red light, PHYA-overexpressing lines showed inhibition of the coleoptile extension in comparison to non-transgenic seedlings. Furthermore, compared with non-transgenic rice plants, mature transgenic plants showed significant reduction in plant height, internode length and internode diameter (including differences in cell size and number), and produced an increased number of panicles per plant. Under greenhouse conditions, rice grain yield was 6–21% higher in three PHYA-overexpressing lines than in non-transgenic plants. These results demonstrate the potential of manipulating light signal-transduction pathways to minimize the problems of lodging in basmati/aromatic rice and to enhance grain productivity.  相似文献

Combined inoculation of Rhizobium and ‘Phosphate-solubilizing’Pseudomonas striata orBacillus polymyxa with and without added chemical fertilizer on chickpea yield and nutrient content was studied under greenhouse conditions. While the single inoculation of Rhizobium increased the nodulation and nitrogenase activity, the ‘phosphate-solubilizers’ increased the available phosphorus content of the soil. Combined inoculation of Rhizobium andP. striata orB. polymyxa increased the above parameters and also the dry matter content, the grain yield and nitrogen and phosphorus uptake significantly over the uninoculated control. The inoculation effects were more pronounced in the presence of added fertilizers. The possibilities of saving half the dose of N and replacing superphosphate with rockphosphate and inoculation with ‘phosphate-solubilizers’ are discussed.  相似文献

Accumulation of protein and starch in grain is a key process determining grain yield and quality in wheat. Under drought or waterlogging, endogenous plant hormone levels will change and may have an impact on the yield and quality of wheat. In a greenhouse experiment, four winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) varieties differing in grain protein content, Heimai 76, Wanmai 38, Yangmai 10 and Yangmai 9, were subjected to drought (SRWC = 4550%, DR), waterlogging (WL) and moderate water supply (SRWC = 7580%, CK), beginning from 4 days post-anthesis (DPA) to maturity. On the 10 (grain enlargement stage) and 20 (grain filling stage) DPA, endogenous abscisic acid (ABA), gibberellins (GA1+3), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and zeatin riboside (ZR) were determined in sink and source organs of wheat plants by enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The patterns of hormonal changes were similar in four varieties. The ABA levels were much higher under DR and WL than under CK. Compared with CK, GA1+3 levels in whole-plant under DR and WL changed a little at 10 DPA, but markedly decreased under DR and WL at 20 DPA. Changes of endogenous IAA level under DR and WL exhibited a complicated pattern, depending on organs and growth stages. Particularly at the 20 DPA, the mean levels of IAA in roots, leaves and grains decreased significantly under DR and WL. In comparison with CK, ZR levels in all organs significantly decreased under DR and WL at both stages. The correlation analyses between yields and contents of starch and protein in grains and levels and ratios of four hormones in source and sink organs indicated that the changes in yield and content of grain starch and protein under DR and WL were associated with the reduced IAA, ZR and GA1+3 levels and elevated ABA level in plants, especially in grains. It was proposed that the changed levels of endogenous hormones under post-anthesis DR and WL might indirectly affect protein and starch accumulation in grains by influencing the regulatory enzymes and processes.  相似文献

Summary Three field experiments were conducted on ten cultivars of winterwheat and four cultivars of springwheat to estimate the growth promoting effect ofAzospirillum brasilense under varying nitrogen doses. Independent of cultivar selection or nitrogen dose a highly significant yield increase could be observed in winterwheat: strains S631 and SpBr14 increased the average grain yield with 9.14% and 14.82% respectively. When the yield components were studied a coinciding increase in ear density could be demonstrated of resp. 10.57% and 13.55%. Less significant results were obtained with springwheat although in one experiment strain SpBr14 significantly increased grain yield. As with winterwheat tillering of the plant was markedly affected by inoculation with both strains. In a companion greenhouse experiment it was found that inoculation with Azospirillum can cause a decrease in the root mass of wheatplants except when strain SpBr14 is used. Therefore it is suggested that the presence of a higher tillering together with an undisturbed nutrient uptake capacity can result in yield increases after inoculation withAzospirillum brasilense.  相似文献

Following the relatively successful biological control of bacterial speck of tomato under field conditions at several locations (Phytopathology 92 (2002) 1284), similar selection and testing strategies were employed in an effort to isolate an effective biological control agent for bacterial spot of tomato. Fifty potential biological control agents were isolated from tomato foliage in Alabama (AL) and Florida (FL) and tested under greenhouse conditions in AL for the ability to reduce the foliar severity of bacterial spot of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum), which is caused by either Xanthomonas campestris pv. vesicatoria or Xanthomonas vesicatoria. Three pseudomonads that provided protection against bacterial speck also were included in the tests. The strains which were most efficacious (i.e., high mean percentage reduction) and consistent (i.e., low standard deviation) in reducing bacterial spot severity in repeated greenhouse experiments were selected for field experiments conducted over the period 1996–1998. Among these strains were Cellulomonas turbata BT1, which provided the highest mean reduction in disease severity [45.2% (SD = 21.0)], and Pseudomonas syringae Cit7 [36.4% (SD = 12.2)], which was the most consistent. Field experiments were conducted in Shorter, AL; Bradenton and Sanford, FL; Clinton, North Carolina; Wooster, Ohio; and London, Ontario, Canada. The highest mean reductions in severity of bacterial spot on foliage, averaged across all locations, were provided by P. syringae Cit7 [28.9% (SD = 11.6)] and Pseudomonas putida B56 [23.1% (SD = 7.4)]. The efficacy and consistency of P. syringae Cit7 against bacterial spot were very similar to those achieved against bacterial speck [28.3% (SD = 12.7)] (Phytopathology 92 (2002) 1284). Unfortunately, neither the bacterial strains nor the standard copper bactericides consistently reduced disease incidence on fruit.  相似文献

Fusarium verticillioides is the most important seed transmitted pathogen that infects maize. It produces fumonisins, toxins that have potential toxicity for humans and animals. Control of F. verticillioides colonisation and systemic contamination of maize has become a priority area in food safety research. The aims of this research were (1) to characterise the maize endorhizosphere and rhizoplane inhabitant bacteria and Fusarium spp., (2) to select bacterial strains with impact on F. verticillioides growth and fumonisin B1 production in vitro, (3) to examine the effects of bacterial inoculum levels on F. verticillioides root colonisation under greenhouse conditions. Arthrobacter spp. and Azotobacter spp. were the predominant genera isolated from maize endorhizosphere and rhizoplane at the first sampling period, whilst F. verticillioides strains showed the greatest counts at the same isolation period. All F. verticillioides strains were able to produce fumonisin B1 in maize cultures. Arthrobacter globiformis RC5 and Azotobacter armeniacus RC2, used alone or in a mix, demonstrated important effects on F. verticillioides growth and fumonisin B1 suppression in vitro. Only Azotobacter armeniacus RC2 significantly reduced the F. verticillioides root colonisation at 106 and 107 CFU g–1 levels under greenhouse conditions.  相似文献

Summary Three series of near-isogenic wheat lines differing in dwarfing alleles, in the varietal backgrounds of Maris Huntsman, Maris Widgeon and Bersee, and the F2 grain on intravarietal F1 hybrids, produced with a chemical hybridising agent, were examined for grain size and protein content. Individual F2 grains from Rht1/rht, Rht2/rht and Rht3/rht F1 spikes were classified for Rht genotype by assaying embryo half grains in a gibberellic acid seedling response test, while the remaining half was used for protein determination. Mean grain weight and protein percentage were lower in all homozygous isogenic lines and the Rht/rht F1 hybrids than in the respective tall lines, in an allele dose-dependent manner. In all the hybrids, the Rht genotype of individual F2 grains, which segregated within the spikes of F1 plants, had no significant effects on grain weight or protein. Consequently, the pleiotropic effects of the Rht alleles on these yield and quality components must be attributed to their presence in maternal plant tissues rather than in the endosperm or embryo tissues of individual grains.  相似文献

Summary In winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), the development of a methodology to estimate genetic divergence between parental lines, when combined with knowledge of parental performance, could be beneficial in the prediction of bulk progeny performance. The objective of this study was to relate F2 heterosis for grain yield and its components in 116 crosses to two independent estimates of genetic divergence among 28 parental genotypes of diverse origins. Genetic divergence between parents was estimated from (a) pedigree relationships (coefficients of kinship) determined without experimentation, and (b) quantitative traits measured in two years of field experimentation in Kansas and North Carolina, USA. These distances, designated (1 -r) and G, respectively, provided ample differentiation among the parents. The 116 F2 bulks were evaluated at four locations in Kansas and North Carolina in one year. Significant rank correlations of 0.46 (P = 0.01) and 0.44 (P = 0.01) were observed between G and grain yield and kernel number heterosis, respectively. Although (1 -r) was poorly associated with grain yield heterosis, G and midparent performance combined to account for 50% of the variation in F2 yields among crosses when (1 -r) was above the median value, whereas they accounted for only 9% of the variation among crosses when (1-r) was below the median. Midparent and (1 -r) had equal effects on F2 grain yield (R 2= 0.40) when G was greater than the median value. A breeding strategy is proposed whereby parents are first selected on the basis of performance per se and, subsequently, crosses are made between genetically divergent parents that have both large quantitative (G) and pedigree divergence (1 -r).Paper No. 12162 of the Journal Series of the North Carolina Agricultural Research Service, Raleigh, NC 27695-7643, and Contribution No. 89-396-J of the Kansas Agricultural Experiment Station, Manhattan, KS 66506  相似文献

Summary Inoculation of water fernAzolla pinnata R. Brown (Bangkok isolate) at the rate of 500kg fresh weight ha−1 in rice fields at weekly intervals after planting in addition to 30 kg N ha−1 as urea showed a decrease in its growth and N2-fixation with delay in application. Use of Azolla up to 3 weeks after planting (WAP) during wet and 4 WAP during dry season produced significantly more grain yield than 30 kg N ha−1, whereas its application upto one WAP produced more grain yield than 60 kg N ha−1. Grain yield with Azolla applied at the time of planting was similar to that of 60 kg N treatment during the wet season. Higher grain yields in zero and one WAP Azolla treatments resulted due to increase in both number of panicles m−2 and number of grains/panicle while the subsequent Azolla inoculations increased grain yield mainly by producing more number of grains/panicle. Dry matter and total N yields at maturity of rice crop were more with Azolla application upto 3 WAP during wet and 2 WAP during dry season while the reduction in sterility (%) was observed upto one WAP over 30 kg N ha−1 during both seasons. Number of tillers m−2 and dry matter production at maximum tillering and flowering were more than 30 kg N ha−1 with the use of Azolla upto one WAP. Increased grain N yield was observed with the use of Azolla upto 4 WAP during two seasons whereas straw N yield increased upto one WAP during wet and 2 WAP during dry season.  相似文献

Fusarium head blight (FHB) caused by Gibberella zeae (anamorph = Fusarium graminearum) is a devastating disease that causes extensive yield and quality losses to wheat in humid and semi-humid regions of the world. Biological control has been demonstrated to be effective under laboratory conditions but a few biocontrol products have been effective under field conditions. The improvement in the physiological quality of biocontrol agents may improve survival under field conditions, and therefore, enhance biocontrol activity. Bacillus subtilis RC 218 and Brevibacillus sp. RC 263 were isolated from wheat anthers and showed significant effect on control of FHB under greenhouse assays. This study showed the effect of water availability measured as water activity (aW) using a growth medium modified with NaCl, glycerol and glucose on: (i) osmotic stress tolerance, (ii) viability in modified liquid medium, (iii) quantitative intracellular accumulation of betaine and ectoine and (iv) the biocontrol efficacy of the physiologically improved agents. Viability of B. subtilis RC 218 in NaCl modified media was similar to the control. Brevibacillus sp. RC 263 showed a limited adaptation to growth in osmotic stress. Betaine was detected in high levels in modified cells but ectoine accumulation was similar to the control cells. Biocontrol activity was studied in greenhouse assays on wheat inoculated at anthesis period with F. graminearum RC 276. Treatments with modified bacteria reduced disease severity from 60% for the control to below 20%. The physiological improvement of biocontrol agents could be an effective strategy to enhance stress tolerance and biocontrol activity under fluctuating environmental conditions.  相似文献

AC 94,377 caused elongation of seedlings of Triticum aestivum, Triticum durum, and Hordeum vulgare when applied to the soil, or the soil plus seed at planting. Affected were the leaf sheathes and the coleoptiles, and at high compound rates there was premature elongation of the stem internodes. As exemplified by the response of T. aestivum var. Fidel, the influence on coleoptile elongation was greatest under conditions whereby the coleoptile was naturally stimulated to elongate, i.e., when growth was in the dark and temperatures were cool (15°C). All of the stem internodes were capable of elongation except the one below the coleoptile node. The effect on leaf sheath elongation was prolonged when compared to activity of gibberellic acid.Several varieties of the three cereal species were examined in the greenhouse for sensitivity to AC 94,377 in order to evaluate the extent of the response. All of the barley varieties examined were sensitive to AC 94,377, elongating regardless of the planting conditions. Two such conditions were established, including incubation under warm (28/20°C) conditions following planting the grains 1 cm deep, and incubation under cool (22/16°C) conditions following planting the grains 6 cm deep. Wheat varieties distributed into two general categories, those which were sensitive and those which were not. The insensitivity correlated well to the presence of the reduced height (Rht) and GA-insensitive (Gai) genes in Triticum aestivum and Triticum durum, respectively. Thus, AC 94,377 can be used conveniently to evaluate varietal lines for the presence of this phenotype. This correlation also lends support to the notion that the Rht/Gai mutations in wheat are either at the level of a gibberellin receptor or at a step in the signal transduction pathway.  相似文献

Breeding for yield in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) should consider the efficiency of biomass and nutrient partitioning to grains. In field experiments, 9 and 18 bean cultivars were cultivated in 1998 and 1999, respectively, to identify the genotypic variability of harvest index (HI) and N and P harvest indices (NHI and PHI), and to evaluate the relationships between these indices and grain yield. Cultivars differed for grain yield, HI, NHI and PHI in both years, but these indices varied less than grain yield. Growth habit markedly influenced HI, with prostrate cultivars possessing higher HI, NHI and PHI than erect cultivars; hence selection for HI should be performed within each phenological group. Grain yield was strongly associated with grain N and P contents, and positively but weakly correlated to HI, NHI and PHI; the indices were highly correlated among themselves. Multiple-regression analysis showed that most genotypic variation of grain yield was associated with the amount of N and P accumulated by the crop at maturity, and some yield variation was associated with seed nutrient concentration, particularly P concentration, whereas NHI and PHI had a minor role. Combined analysis of both experiments showed that grain yield diminished by 57% from 1998 to 1999, whereas HI remained almost stable and NHI and PHI decreased slightly, but the significant year × cultivar interaction revealed different degrees of phenotypic plasticity of biomass partitioning among cultivars. Selection solely for increased HI would scarcely result in improved grain yield, raising concomitantly NHI and PHI and probably reducing grain P concentration.  相似文献

Under greenhouse conditions, seedlings of three forest species, baldcypress (Taxodium distichum), nuttall oak (Quercus nuttallii), and swamp chestnut oak (Quercus michauxii) were subjected to an intermittent flooding and subsequent physiological and growth responses to such conditions were evaluated. Baldcypress showed no significant reductions in stomatal conductance (g s) or net photosynthetic rate (P N) in response to flood pulses. In nuttall oak seedlings g s and P N were significantly decreased during periods of inundation, but recovered rapidly following drainage. In contrast, in swamp chestnut oak g s was reduced by 71.8 % while P N was reduced by 57.2 % compared to controls. Baldcypress displayed no significant changes in total mass while oak species had significantly lower leaf and total mass compared to their respective controls. Thus baldcypress and nuttall oak showed superior performance under frequent intermittent flooding regimes due to several factors including the ability for rapid recovery of gas exchange soon after soil was drained. In contrast, swamp chestnut oak seedlings failed to resume gas exchange functions after the removal of flooding.  相似文献
