《Harmful algae》2009,8(1):152-157
Population dynamics of harmful algal bloom species are regulated both from the “bottom-up” by factors that affect their growth rate and from the “top-down” by factors that affect their loss rates. While it might seem apparent that eutrophication would have the greatest impact on factors affecting growth rates of phytoplankton (nutrient supply, light availability) the roles of top-down controls, including grazers and pathogens, cannot be ignored in studies of harmful bloom dynamics. Lags between the growth of phytoplankton and zooplankton populations, or disruption of zooplankton populations by adverse environmental conditions may be important factors in the initiation of plankton blooms under eutrophic conditions. Grazers that avoid feeding on harmful species and actively graze on competing species may also play important roles in bloom initiation. Grazers that are not affected by phytoplankton toxins and have growth rates comparable to phytoplankton (e.g. protozoan grazers) may have the potential to control the initiation of blooms. If the inhibition of grazers varies with cell density for blooms of toxic phytoplankton, eutrophication may increase the chances of blooms reaching threshold densities for grazer inhibition. In addition, secondary effects of eutrophication, including hypoxia and change in pH may adversely affect grazer populations, and further release HAB species from top-down control. The Texas brown tide (Aureoumbra lagunensis) blooms provide evidence for the role of grazer disruption in bloom initiation and the importance of high densities of brown tide cells in continued suppression of grazers.  相似文献

Our study aimed to analyze the effects of chronic nutrient loading on the capacity of headwater streams to retain phosphorus and ammonium pulses of different duration. For this purpose, we selected nine headwater streams located across a gradient of increasing agricultural land use and eutrophication. In each stream, we performed sequential plateau additions with increasing nutrient concentrations in summer 2015 and instantaneous slug additions in summer 2016 under similar hydrological conditions. We modelled kinetic uptake curves from the slug additions via the Tracer Additions for Spiraling Curve Characterization method and calculated ambient uptake parameters. Ambient uptake rates generally increased (1.4–20.8 µg m?2 s?1 for NH4–N and 0.3–10.3 µg m?2 s?1 for SRP, respectively), while ambient uptake velocities decreased from oligotrophic to polytrophic streams (1.8–14.0 mm min?1 for NH4–N and 1.6–9.9 mm min?1 for SRP, respectively). However, correlations between ambient uptake parameters and background concentrations were weak. Concentration-dependent uptake rates followed either a linear or a Michaelis–Menten saturation model, regardless of the degree of nutrient loading. Uptake rate curves showed counter-clockwise hysteresis in oligotrophic streams and clockwise hysteresis in streams of higher trophic states, indicating a reduced significance of hyporheic uptake with increasing nutrient loading. Comparisons of slug and plateau additions revealed that oligotrophic streams were most efficient in uptake during short nutrient pulses, while eutrophic streams profited from longer pulse duration. The results indicate that nutrient uptake is increasingly transport-controlled in polluted streams where increased biofilm thickness and clogging of sediments restrict nutrient transport to reactive sites.  相似文献

Valley fill mining has the potential to alter headwater stream habitat in many areas in the eastern United States. In valley fill mining, overburden is removed to expose underlying coal seams. The overburden is then deposited in the adjacent valley. The deposited overburden from mining increases sedimentation, increases stream conductivity, and alters hydrologic regimes downstream of the fill. Changes in downstream communities are not well documented. However, it was suspected the increased sedimentation and conductivity would have deleterious effects upon the downstream macroinvertebrate communities. In southern West Virginia, four pairs of streams, each consisting of a fill and a reference stream, were selected as representative of watersheds experiencing valley fill mining. Stream pairs were selected for similar environmental conditions, with one stream having a valley fill in its headwaters. Each stream was sampled by replicate Surber samples (n=9 per stream). Water chemistry and sediment measurements also were taken at each location. Valley fill streams experienced significantly higher specific conductance (p < 0.01), but did not have elevated levels of fine sediment. Fills exhibited elevated levels of Na, K, Mn, Mg, Ca, Ni and Fe relative to reference streams. Additionally, valley fill streams demonstrated significantly lower densities of Ephemeroptera, Coleoptera, Odonata, Non-insects, Scrapers, and Shredders (p < 0.03) than reference streams. Further, Ephemeroptera richness was negatively related to specific conductivity and many of the richness metrics were negatively related to metals, both of which were generally elevated in fill streams. It appears that at the minimum, valley fills increase specific conductance and metals in streams and this or some other unqualified factors structure the macroinvertebrate community downstream of the valley fill. However, given the level of disturbance in valley fills, it is surprising how little differences existed between fills and reference stream biota.  相似文献

Populations are formed of their constituent interacting individuals, each with their own respective within‐host biological processes. Infection not only spreads within the host organism but also spreads between individuals. Here we propose and study a multilevel model which links the within‐host statuses of immunity and parasite density to population epidemiology under sublethal and lethal toxicant exposure. We analyse this nested model in order to better understand how toxicants impact the spread of disease within populations. We demonstrate that outbreak of infection within a population is completely determined by the level of toxicant exposure, and that it is maximised by intermediate toxicant dosage. We classify the population epidemiology into five phases of increasing toxicant exposure and calculate the conditions under which disease will spread, showing that there exists a threshold toxicant level under which epidemics will not occur. In general, higher toxicant load results in either extinction of the population or outbreak of infection. The within‐host statuses of the individual host also determine the outcome of the epidemic at the population level. We discuss applications of our model in the context of environmental epidemiology, predicting that increased exposure to toxicants could result in greater risk of epidemics within ecological systems. We predict that reducing sublethal toxicant exposure below our predicted safe threshold could contribute to controlling population level disease and infection.  相似文献

The lecture presents modern knowledge of the mechanisms of cytokinin perception and signal transduction to the genes of primary and secondary responses. It also demonstrates the relations between the rapid cytokinin-induced processes and cytokinin-induced physiological effects. The characteristics of the cytokinin regulatory system and its role in the control of plant growth and development are discussed.  相似文献

While it has often been assumed that, in humans, synonymous mutations would have no effect on fitness, let alone cause disease, this position has been questioned over the last decade. There is now considerable evidence that such mutations can, for example, disrupt splicing and interfere with miRNA binding. Two recent publications suggest involvement of additional mechanisms: modification of protein abundance most probably mediated by alteration in mRNA stability and modification of protein structure and activity, probably mediated by induction of translational pausing. These case histories put a further nail into the coffin of the assumption that synonymous mutations must be neutral.  相似文献

Heterogeneity in the parameters governing the spread of infectious diseases is a common feature of real-world epidemics. It has been suggested that for pathogens with basic reproductive number R(0)>1, increasing heterogeneity makes extinction of disease more likely during the early rounds of transmission. The basic reproductive number R(0) of the introduced pathogen may, however, be less than 1 after the introduction, and evolutionary changes are then required for R(0) to increase to above 1 and the pathogen to emerge. In this paper, we consider how host heterogeneity influences the emergence of both non-evolving pathogens and those that must undergo adaptive changes to spread in the host population. In contrast to previous results, we find that heterogeneity does not always make extinction more likely and that if adaptation is required for emergence, the effect of host heterogeneity is relatively small. We discuss the application of these ideas to vaccination strategies.  相似文献

1. Of the relatively few studies that have examined consequences of amphibian declines on stream ecosystems, virtually all have focused on changes in algae (or algal‐based food webs) and little is known about the potential effects of tadpoles on leaf decomposition. We compared leaf litter decomposition dynamics in two neotropical streams: one with an intact community of tadpoles (with frogs) and one where tadpoles were absent (frogless) as a result of a fungal pathogen that had driven amphibians locally extinct. The stream with tadpoles contained a diverse assemblage (23 species) of larval anurans, and we identified five species of glass frog (Centrolenidae) tadpoles that were patchily distributed but commonly associated with leaf detritus and organic sediments in pools. The latter reached total densities of 0–318 tadpoles m?2. 2. We experimentally excluded tadpoles from single‐species leaf packs incubated over a 40‐day period in streams with and without frogs. We predicted that decomposition rates would be higher in control (allowing access of tadpoles) treatments in the study stream with frogs than in the frogless stream and, in the stream with frogs, in the control than in the tadpole exclusion treatment. 3. In the stream with frogs, Centrolene prosoblepon and Cochranella albomaculata tadpoles were patchily distributed in leaf packs (0.0–33.3 m?2). In contrast to our predictions, leaf mass loss and temperature‐corrected leaf decomposition rates in control treatments were almost identical in our stream with frogs (41.01% AFDM lost, kdegree day = ?0.028 day?1) and in the frogless stream (41.81% AFDM lost, kdegree day = ?0.027 day?1) and between control and tadpole exclusion treatments within each stream. Similarly, there were no significant differences in leaf pack bacterial biomass, microbial respiration rates or macroinvertebrate abundance between treatments or streams. Invertebrate assemblages on leaf packs were similar between treatments (SIMI = 0.97) and streams (SIMI = 0.95) and were dominated by larval Chironomidae, Simuliidae (Diptera) and larval Anchytarsus spp. (Coleoptera). 4. In contrast to dramatic effects of grazing tadpoles on algal communities observed previously, tadpoles had no major effects on decomposition. While centrolenid tadpoles were common in the stream with frogs, their patchy distribution in both experimental and natural leaf packs suggests that their effects on detrital dynamics and microbes are probably more localised than those of grazing tadpoles on algae.  相似文献

Does light intensity modify the effect mayfly grazers have on periphyton?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
1. A factorial experiment was conducted in artificial outdoor streams to quantify the effects of irradiance (two levels) and two mayfly grazers (four densities of each) on periphytic community structure. The mayflies were Ecdyonurus venosus (Heptageniidae), a grazer using brushing mouthparts, and Baetis spp. (Baetidae) a grazer which uses mandibles and maxilla to scrape and gather periphyton. The experiment ran for 16 days. 2. Grazer densities in channels approximated those existing in a shoreline habitat in the River Sihl, Switzerland. Light treatments were natural (daily mean = 810 μmol m–2 s–1) and shaded (daily mean = 286 μmol m–2 s–1). 3. Higher irradiance increased total algal abundance by a factor of 4. Algae most affected were prostrate/motile and erect diatoms, filamentous chlorophytes and Hydrurus foetidus. 4. Both species of mayfly reduced periphytic and algal biomass. Mayfly–mayfly interactions, however, were associated with statistical increases in algal biovolume and chlorophyll-a content, indicating that the two grazers may have interfered with one another as their densities increased. The mayfly–mayfly interaction did not influence periphytic ash-free dry mass (AFDM). Light modified the influence of Ecdyonurus such that this mayfly produced greater reductions in algal biovolume under high irradiance. 5. Despite efforts to exclude other grazers, chironomids colonized experimental channels. Chironomid biomass was approximately eight times less than mayflies across treatments and was positively correlated with all measures of periphytic abundance, suggesting that these grazers were responding to periphyton rather than controlling it. Chironomids were also associated with an increase in the abundance of diatoms having a prostrate/motile physiognomy. The only physiognomy to show a negative relationship with chironomid biomass was the thallus type, a form which comprised less than 1% of the algal biovolume across channels. 6. Ecdyonurus and Baetis had distinct influences on algal physiognomy. Ecdyonurus, for example, reduced adnate, stalked and Achnanthes-type physiognomies, but was associated with a significant increase in the abundance of filamentous chlorophytes (primarily Ulothrix sp.). Baetis reduced erect, Achnanthes-type and thallus physiognomies. Neither mayfly influenced the abundance of prostrate/motile diatoms; a physiognomy that comprised 21% of the algae in channels. 7. Light and mayfly interactions affected algal community structure. The interaction of Ecdyonurus with light had a negative effect on erect diatoms, filamentous chlorophytes and the thallus physiognomy, but a positive effect on stalked and Achnanthes-type physiognomies. Baetis interacting with light had a positive effect on adnate diatoms. 8. Although both mayfly taxa influenced periphytic community structure, physiognomy was not a good predictor of algal susceptibility to grazing. The type of substratum to which an alga is attached (detritus or algal filaments vs hard surfaces) and location within the periphytic matrix may be better indicators of vulnerability to grazing than physiognomy.  相似文献

The catalytic activities of lyophilized powders of alpha-chymotrypsin and Candida antarctica lipase were found to increase 4- to 8-fold with increasing amounts of either buffer salts or potassium chloride in the enzyme preparation. Increasing amounts of sorbitol in the chymotrypsin preparation produced a modest increase in activity. The additives are basically thought to serve as immobilization matrices, the sorbitol being inferior because of its poor mechanical properties.Besides their role as supports, the buffer species were indispensable for the transesterification activity of chymotrypsin because they prevented perturbations of the pH during the course of the reaction. Hence, increasing amounts of buffer species yielded a 100-fold increase in transesterification activity. Effects of pH changes were not as predominant in the peptide synthesis and the lipase-catalyzed reactions.Immobilization of the protease on celite resulted in a remarkable improvement of transesterification activity as compared to the suspended protease, even in the absence of buffer species. Immobilization of the lipase caused a small improvement of activity. The activity of the immobilized enzymes was further enhanced 3-4 times by including increasing amounts of buffer salts in the preparation. The inclusion of increasing amounts of sodium phosphate or sorbitol to chymotrypsin rendered the catalyst more labile against thermal inactivation. The denaturation temperature decreased with 7 degrees C at the highest content of sodium phosphate, as compared to the temperature obtained for the denaturation of the pure protein. The apparent enthalpy of denaturation increased with increasing contents of the additives. The enhancement of hydration level and flexibility of the macromolecule upon addition of the compounds partly provides the explanation for the observed results. (c) 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Although it is widely predicted that the geographic distributions of tree species and forest types will undergo substantial shifts in future, modelling approaches used to date are largely unable to project the pace at which forest distributions will respond to environmental change. The expansion and contraction of forest distributions act against considerable demographic inertia in the present composition and size‐structure of forest stands as climate‐induced changes in growth, mortality, and recruitment alter population dynamics through time. We aimed to better understand how shifts in forest distributions reflect long‐term changes in tree demographic rates and population dynamics, and how such shifts are influenced by 1) disturbance from forest harvesting and 2) local environmental heterogeneity. Using a simple, data‐constrained gap model, we simulated regional forest dynamics in the eastern United States over the next 500 yr. We then compared the geographic distributions of five different forest types through time under present and altered climatic conditions, in scenarios that variously included and excluded forest harvesting and environmental heterogeneity. Although we held climate fixed after 100 yr, it took another 160 yr after this for these forest types to collectively experience 90% of their eventual climate‐related distribution gains and losses. Competition strongly affected the nature of responses to climate change. Harvesting accelerated and amplified gains by an early‐successional forest type at the expense of a late‐successional one, but these gains did not occur faster than those for other forest types. Environmental heterogeneity had little effect on distribution gains or losses through time. These findings indicate that forest distributions should respond quite slowly to climate change, with the leading and trailing edges of different forest types shifting over a span of centuries. Disturbances can expedite some transitions, but are unlikely to lead to wholesale changes in forest types in the coming decades.  相似文献

How do macrophyte distribution patterns affect hydraulic resistances?   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
In eutrophic river systems, macrophytes attain high biomass with reduced drainage and increased flooding risk. To avoid these problems, water managers remove vegetation. Total removal, however, increases wash out of macro-invertebrate communities reducing the ecological value of rivers. Partial vegetation removal reduces this washout and prevents an increase in hydraulic resistance. In this, study the hydraulic performance of three partial vegetation removal patterns was tested. From the results it was seen that hydraulic resistance, expressed as Manning's n, was varying between 0.025 m−1/3 s and 0.050 m−1/3 s. Compared with the empty situation, the different distribution patterns increased resistance between 14 and 23%. Hydraulic resistance of these patterns was also significantly influenced by the species present in the vegetation patches. Three groups of macrophyte plants (emerged, floating leaved and submerged) with significantly different hydraulic resistances were determined. The emerged species Sparganium erectum generated the least resistance with an average friction of 0.03 m−1/3 s. Stuckenia pectinata and Potamogeton natans had slightly higher friction values around 0.4 m−1/3 s. Ranunculus penicillatus and Callitriche platycarpa had average friction values around 0.05 m−1/3 s.The proposed vegetation removal patterns are good alternatives to create a management system, which minimally increases hydraulic resistance but still guarantees the ecological functions.  相似文献

Host immune responses limit, and in some instances eliminate, nematode infections. There is considerable interest in enhancing these natural processes by the use of antinematode vaccines to achieve control of infection or disease. How nematodes are damaged is unclear. Worms might be damaged directly by effector cells and molecules of the immune system. Alternatively, they might be damaged by the physiological stress of their efforts to resist attack. Separating these possibilities could have important implications for approaches to the control of nematode infections and the disease that they cause.  相似文献

One of the most promising recent advances in biogeography has been the increased interest and understanding of species distribution models – estimates of the probability that a species is present given environmental data. Unfortunately, such analyses ignore many aspects of ecology, and so are difficult to interpret. In particular, we know that species interactions have a profound influence on distributions, but it is not usually possible to incorporate this knowledge into species distribution models. What is needed is a rigorous understanding of how unmeasured biotic interactions affect the inferences generated by species distribution models. To fill this gap, we develop a general mathematical approach that uses probability theory to determine how unmeasured biotic interactions affect inferences from species distribution models. Using this approach, we reanalyze one of the most important classes of mechanistic models of competition: models of consumer resource dynamics. We determine how measurements of one aspect of the environment – a single environmental variable – can be used to estimate the probability that an environment is suitable with species distribution models. We show that species distribution models, which ignore numerous facets of consumer resource dynamics such as the presence of a competitor or the dynamics of depletable resources, can furnish useful predictions for the probability that an environment is suitable in some circumstances. These results provide a rigorous link between complex mechanistic models of species interactions and species distribution models. In so doing they demonstrate that unmeasured biotic interactions can have strong and counterintuitive consequences on species distribution models.  相似文献

Grasslands being used in sheep farming systems are managed under a variety of agricultural production, recreational and conservational objectives. Although sheep grazing is rarely considered the best method for delivering conservation objectives in seminatural temperate grasslands, the literature does not provide unequivocal evidence on the impact of sheep grazing on pasture biodiversity. Our aim was therefore to review evidence of the impacts of stocking rate, grazing period and soil fertility on plant communities and arthropod populations in both mesotrophic grasslands typical of agriculturally improved areas and in native plant communities. We therefore conducted a literature search of articles published up to the end of the year 2010 using ‘sheep’ and ‘grazing’ as keywords, together with variables describing grassland management, plant community structure or arthropod taxa. The filtering process led to the selection of 48 articles, with 42 included in the stocking rate dataset, 9 in the grazing period dataset and 10 in the soil fertility dataset. The meta-analysis did not reveal any significant trends for plant species richness or plant community evenness along a wide stocking rate gradient. However, we found frequent shifts in functional groups or plant species abundance that could be explained by the functional properties of the plants in the community. The meta-analysis confirmed that increasing soil fertility decreased plant species richness. Despite the very limited dataset, plant species richness was significantly greater in autumn-grazed pastures than in ungrazed areas, which suggests that choosing an appropriate grazing period would be a promising option for preserving biodiversity in sheep farming systems. Qualitative review indicated that low grazing intensity had positive effects on Orthoptera, Hemiptera (especially phytophagous Auchenorrhyncha) and, despite a diverse range of feeding strategies, for the species richness of Coleoptera. Lepidoptera, which were favoured by more abundant flowering plants, also benefited from low grazing intensities. Spider abundance and species richness were higher in ungrazed than in grazed pastures. In contrast, there are insufficient published studies to draw any firm conclusions on the benefits of late grazing or stopping fertilization on insect diversity, and no grounds for including any of this information in decision support tools at this stage.  相似文献
