There is a considerable interest in trying to understand how aphids find their host plants because they are a major cause of economic losses in agricultural and horticultural production systems. Indeed, the specific behavioural sequences during host finding by aphids are one of the main reasons for their prominent role as vectors of plant pathogenic viruses. This paper reviews the visual and olfactory stimuli involved in host‐finding behaviour of aphids, both basic and applied aspects are covered. Although controlling aphids by manipulation of visual and olfactory stimuli involved in host finding and host selection can be highly successful, as shown by research, most of these measures can still be further optimised and adoption in practice is currently limited. Research therefore needs to address some critical open questions, including (a) the effects of visual contrasts on aphid behaviour; (b) the specific responses of aphids to ultraviolet (UV) light during different stages in host finding; (c) the quantification of behavioural sequences in the field and (d) the response of aphid behaviour to plant diversity at varying spatial scales; further, (e) a much more comprehensive coverage of aphid taxa and aphid ecological groups is needed in host‐finding related research to uncover ecological principles underlying this critical behaviour. 相似文献

To access phloem sap, aphids have developed a furtive strategy, their stylets progressing towards sieve tubes mainly through the apoplasmic compartment. Aphid feeding requires that they overcome a number of plant responses, ranging from sieve tube occlusion and activation of phytohormone-signalling pathways to expression of anti-insect molecules. In addition to bypassing plant defences, aphids have been shown to affect plant primary metabolism, which could be a strategy to improve phloem sap composition in nutrients required for their growth. During compatible interactions, leading to successful feeding and reproduction, aphids cause alterations in their host plant, including morphological changes, modified resource allocation and various local as well as systemic symptoms. Repeated salivary secretions injected from the first probe in the epidermal tissue up to ingestion of sieve-tube sap may play a crucial role in the compatibility between the aphid and the plant. 相似文献

Aphids constitute a monophyletic group within the order Homoptera (i.e., superfamily Aphidoidea). The Aphidoidea originated in the Jurassic about 150 my ago from some aphidiform ancestor whose origin can be traced back to about 250 my ago. They exhibit a mutualistic association with intracellular bacteria (Buchnera sp.) related to Escherichia coli. Buchnera is usually considered the aphids' primary endosymbiont. The association is obligate for both partners. The 16S rDNA-based phylogeny of Buchnera from four aphid families showed complete concordance with the morphology-based phylogeny of their aphid hosts, which pointed to a single original infection in a common ancestor of aphids some 100-250 my ago followed by cospeciation of aphids and Buchnera. This study concentrated on the molecular phylogeny of both the aphids and their primary endosymbionts of five aphid families including for the first time representatives of the family Lachnidae. We discuss results based on two Buchnera genes (16S rDNA and the beta subunit of the F-ATPase complex) and on one host mitochondrial gene (the subunit 6 of the F-ATPase complex). Although our data do not allow definitive evolutionary relationships to be established among the different aphid families, some traditionally accepted groupings are put into question from both bacterial and insect data. In particular, the Lachnidae and the Aphididae, which from morphological data are considered recently evolved sister groups, do not seem to be as closely related as is usually accepted. Finally, we discuss our results in the light of the proposed parallel evolution of aphids and their endosymbionts. 相似文献

Cancer of the prostate is the most frequent cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death in men in North America. The growth of Shionogi carcinoma-115 (SC-115) cells is highly sensitive to androgens, and this cell line is a well known experimental model of prostate cancer. The transplantable Shionogi carcinoma tumor was used to assess the influence of tumor size on the response to flutamide treatment. Two weeks after subcutaneous inoculation of tumor fragments in Shionogi mice, six groups of animals bearing SC-115 tumors ranging from 0.1 to 1.8 cm in diameter were treated with flutamide (1 mg, twice daily). The castrated mice received an androstenedione (Δ4-dione) implant to mimic the human situation, where the adrenals produce precursor steroids which are transformed into androgens in peripheral intracrine tissues. After 16 days, treatment with flutamide inhibited tumor growth by 32 to 57% in the four groups of mice having tumors ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 cm in diameter at day 0, whereas no significant inhibitory effect was observed in larger tumors. The same treatment, however, caused potent inhibitory effects on other androgen-sensitive parameters, namely prostatic and seminal vesicle weight and kidney ornithine decarboxylase (ODC) activity, the effect on these parameters being similar in all groups of animals, irrespective of tumor size. Furthermore, when those larger tumors unresponsive to antiandrogenic treatment were cut into small fragments and inoculated into new groups of mice, the same treatment with flutamide efficiently inhibited tumor growth, treatment being started at tumor sizes of 0.1 to 0.3 cm in diameter. The present data clearly demonstrate that small tumors are highly sensitive to androgen deprivation, while loss of response develops with increasing tumor size, thus indicating that, for optimal efficacy, androgen blockade should be given at the early stages of prostate cancer. 相似文献

Nowadays, it is clear that adult stem cells, also called as tissue stem cells, play a central role to repair and maintain the tissue in which they reside by their self-renewal ability and capacity of differentiating into distinct and specialized cells. As stem cells age, their renewal ability declines and their capacity to maintain organ homeostasis and regeneration is impaired. From a molecular perspective, these changes in stem cells properties can be due to several types of cell intrinsic injury and DNA aberrant alteration (i.e epigenomic profile) as well as changes in the tissue microenviroment, both into the niche and by systemic circulating factors. Strikingly, it has been suggested that aging-induced deterioration of stem cell functions may play a key role in the pathophysiology of the various aging-associated disorders. Therefore, understanding how resident stem cell age and affects near and distant tissues is fundamental. Here, we examine the current knowledge about aging mechanisms in several kinds of adult stem cells under physiological and pathological conditions and the principal aging-related changes in number, function and phenotype that determine the loss of tissue renewal properties. Furthermore, we examine the possible cell rejuvenation strategies. Stem cell rejuvenation may reverse the aging phenotype and the discovery of effective methods for inducing and differentiating pluripotent stem cells for cell replacement therapies could open up new possibilities for treating age-related diseases. 相似文献

Aphids are the major pests of arable crops, mostly in temperate regions. They are monophagous as well as polyphagous. They inflict damage in brassica, potato, cotton, vegetable and fruit crops. They damage their host plant directly by feeding upon their phloem sap, or indirectly by transmitting pathogens to them. Their life cycle can be autoecious as well as heteroecious. Aphids use semiochemicals for various purposes, in gathering information from their environment and for communication among themselves. They protect themselves from predators and parasitoids by escape response which is arbitrated by use of alarm pheromone signalling. When alarm pheromone, (E)-ß-farnesene, is released, nearby aphids exhibit a variety of behaviours like moving away, running, dropping off the plant and even attacking the predator. Previous studies of integrated pest management strategies have been aimed at the usage of alarm pheromone. However, scientists require complete knowledge of aphid ecology as well as aphid interaction with its natural enemies to establish efficient and viable biological control. This review presents analysis of the existing aphid pest management methodologies and effectiveness of alarm pheromone on aphids and their natural enemies. 相似文献

Abstract. Five winged forms of the black bean aphid, Aphis fabae, were subjected to 30 min of free flight in a recently designed, automated wind tunnel (David & Hardie, 1988). A circular green target, on the side of the chamber, was illuminated for 2.5 s of each minute of flight. Half of the fundatrigeniae ('spring migrants') and all of the virginoparous 'summer migrants' responded by flying towards the illuminated target while gynoparae ('autumn migrants') induced by short days over two generations in uncrowded conditions were unresponsive. 27% of generation 1 gynoparae, induced by crowded conditions and short days over one generation, responded to the target as did 50% of males.

Using a 30 day time series of aphid Aphis helianthi and coccinellid counts on 107 mapped racemes of Yucca glauca, we demonstrate progressive, predation‐induced self‐organization of aphid colonies on individual racemes into extremely low and extremely high population sizes. This was driven by a two‐attractor structure of density dependence that developed only in the presence of coccinellid predators. Foraging movements of the coccinellids among plants produced a power law relationship (average power = 0.142) between aphid and coccinellid numbers. This resulted in increased predation pressure on mid‐size colonies and decreased predation pressure on small and large populations. A field‐parameterized mathematical model predicts a two‐attractor structure in broad agreement with our observations. The overall system was integrated by the influence of the largest aphid populations, which determined the total number of coccinellids present, and thus the predation pressure throughout the system. Our study provides clear evidence of predator‐driven self‐organization of prey populations in a patchy environment. 相似文献

The following results on the behavior decision making of the antLasius niger toward two species of myrmecophilous aphidsLachnus tropicalis andMyzocallis kuricola on chestnut trees have been found. (1) An individual worker consistently attended only one aphid species, even if her nestmates attended other aphid species on the same tree. (2) The ants preyed less on the aphid species which they attended than on other myrmecophilous aphid species. (3) The ants preyed less on the aphids which had been attended by their nestmates, even if both aphids were the same species. (4) The ants preyed less on aphids which had provided honeydew to their nestmates. (5) The increased aphid density per ant led to an increase in the rate of predation on the introduced aphids by the ants. These results suggest that each worker ofL. niger chooses aphid species to attend from her experience. In addition, the workers can recognize whether an aphid has been attended by their nestmates and whether an aphid has given their nestmates honeydew. Through these processes, each worker decides to attend or to prey on the aphid. As a result, they may realize efficient collective foraging dependent on aphid density per worker. 相似文献

Many organisms, including entomopathogenous fungi, predators or parasites, use aphids as ressources. Parasites of aphids are mostly endoparasitoid insects, i.e. insects which lay eggs inside the body of an other insect which will die as a result of their development. In this article, we review the consequences of the numerous pecularities of aphid biology and ecology for their endoparasitoids, notably the Aphidiinae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae). We first examine the various mechanisms used by aphids for defence against these enemies. We then explore the strategies used by aphidiine parasitoids to exploit their aphid hosts. Finally, we consider the responses of both aphids and parasitoids to ecological constraints induced by seasonal cycles and to environmental variations linked to host plants and climate. The fundamental and applied interest of studying these organisms is discussed. 相似文献
