Deprea is a neotropical genus that comprises 51 species. Recent work based on molecular data has explored its monophyly and interspecific relationships, but the relationships amongst Deprea species were not entirely elucidated. The inclusion of more accessions and molecular markers in phylogenetic analysis is likely to produce more supported hypotheses. Therefore, the main objective of this study was to perform a combined phylogenetic analysis of Deprea including seven new samples representing six species and one more DNA plastid marker than in previous studies. In that process, a new species of Deprea from Colombia was discovered and is described and illustrated here. Deprea teresitae Deanna & A. Orejuela, sp. nov. is morphologically similar to D. dilloniana and phylogenetically closely related to D. hawkesii and D. harlingiana. This new species is distinguished by the combination of short calyx lobes, non-mucronate anthers, long staminal filaments and corolla lobes, and elongated appressed fruiting calyx around a subglobose green berry. The new phylogenetic results are presented, including discussion on phylogenetic interspecific relationships, taxonomy, geographic distribution, and conservation status from D. teresitae. The synonymy of Deprea sylvarum subsp. novogranatensis under D. glabra is also proposed and an identification key to the 10 Deprea species distributed in Colombia is included.  相似文献

Dioecy in the Solanaceae is rare, occurring in < 1 percent of the species worldwide and known in only two species from South America. We report the occurrence of cryptic dioecy in the Neotropical genus Deprea. Studying herbarium material of the Venezuelan endemic D. paneroi revealed morphological distinctions that tentatively served to divide collections into male and female morphs. This discovery prompted investigation of population structure, crossing studies, and morphometric analyses of 95 individuals from the largest known wild population and a small sample of greenhouse‐grown plants. About 60 percent of the population was reproductive, and of these, nearly equal numbers exhibited female or male characteristics. Plants that bore fruit and small sterile anthers were characterized as female; those that lacked fruit but produced pollen in large anthers were characterized as male. The morphology, receptivity, and developmental phenology of pistils were identical in both forms. Crossing studies revealed significant enlargement of the ovaries in open‐pollinated female flowers and female X male hand‐pollinations. The ovaries in open‐pollinated male flowers and male X male hand‐pollinations never enlarged. These results suggest that the only legitimate combination is female X male. Dioecy in the family and possible mechanisms for the evolution and maintenance of dioecy in D. paneroi are discussed.  相似文献

Daviesia ulicifolia is a widespread species that exhibits complex variation throughout its range. Using ordination and cluster analysis of morphometric characters we resolved ten terminal taxa for phylogenetic analysis. A data set including these and five closely related species was coded for a combination of morphometric and qualitative characters and analysed using parsimony. This revealed thatD. ulicifolia is paraphyletic by inclusion ofD. acicularis, D. arenaria andD. microcarpa. One terminal cluster is more similar to an outgroup species (D. arthropoda) than toD. ulicifolia and should be treated as a new species. Given recent theoretical and empirical studies showing paraphyly to be both expected and observed at species level, we propose that all existing species in this group continue to be recognised taxonomically. We suggest subdividingD. ulicifolia into several subspecies.  相似文献

Astragalus mokiacensis has been a problematic species since it was first described in 1877. Every major revision delimited this taxon differently. A principal components analysis of morphological data from herbarium specimens was used to determine the affinities between type specimens and extant populations ofA. mokiacensis. The taxon recently recognized asA. lentiginosus var.trumbullensis is morphologically similar to the lectotype ofAstragalus mokiacensis. Astragalus lentiginosus var.trumbullensis is herein recognized as a lowelevation minor variant and considered a synonym ofA. mokiacensis. A taxonomic key and complete synonymy are included.  相似文献

Italian representatives of the Cardamine pratensis group were investigated using morphometric, karyological, and molecular (AFLP-fingerprinting) analyses. Focus was on resolving the taxonomic and evolutionary position of C. granulosa from Piemonte (NW Italy) and of populations from central Italy, previously included in C. granulosa or C. pratensis s. str. Results show that C. granulosa is a morphologically and genetically well defined diploid species, but is extremely rare and restricted to a small area in Piemonte. Central Italian populations differ from both C. granulosa and C. pratensis s. str., and, although the morphological differentiation is not strongly pronounced, they show marked molecular divergence, suggesting recognition as a new species, Cardamine apennina. Because of their restricted distribution and diploid chromosomal level, C. apennina and C. granulosa may represent basal and quite isolated lineages, whereas reticulation on diploid and polyploid level has affected remaining lineages of the C. pratensis group. Both Italian endemics are endangered due to rarity and habitat loss. A key for identification of the Italian taxa of the C. pratensis group is also provided.  相似文献

A new species,Deprea nubicola, is described. Although the corolla is similar in some aspects to that ofD. bitteriana, D. nubicola is distinguished by its diminutive leaves, a low density of hairs in the corolla annulus, glabrous filaments, and a distinctive long-pedicellate, subulate-lobed fruiting calyx.Deprea nubicola shares withD. ecuatoriana a fruiting calyx that tightly invests the berry. The distribution ofD. nubicola is limited to the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta of northern Colombia. A key to the species ofDeprea is provided.  相似文献

Miarus is a Holarctic weevil genus with morphologically very similar species, all breeding on Campanula plants or their close relatives. Two European members of this genus, Miarus campanulae (L.), the type species, and Miarus graminis (Bohemann) have recently been split into several new species on the basis of slight external variations. The separation of these new forms has proved impossible and new data was needed. Molecular data were gathered from specimens from a number of locations in Finland, Estonia, Denmark and Sweden. The regions sequenced were mitochondrial CO1 and nuclear ITS2. Both combined and separate datasets were analyzed using the optimization alignment program POY, with parsimony as the optimality criterion. The recently separated Miarus species was found to be indistinguishable from the traditionally recognized form on the basis of this sequence data. On the other hand, the traditionally recognized species were characterized by numerous synapomorphies. Our data suggest that recent studies have underestimated the morphological variation in this genus. We propose that this may also be true for many taxonomically problematic beetle complexes in well‐studied European regions. The idea that molecular evidence will inevitably reveal unnoticed cryptic variation may only apply to poorly known regions. Miarus fennicus Kangas, 1978 is placed as a junior synonym of Miarus campanulae (Linnaeus, 1767) syn. nov . © The Willi Hennig Society 2006.  相似文献

Millettia and Derris are two taxonomically complicated genera of the tribe Millettieae (Leguminosae), and when only flowering material is available they are not easily distinguished from each other. A critical examination of literature and specimens as well as a field survey show that Millettia sapindifolia T. C. Chen, a Chinese species described on the basis of two flowering collections, is conspecific with Derris yunnanensis Chun & F. C. How. The two are closely similar in various characters, such as the inflorescence type, monadelphous stamens, branches with longitudinal ridges, and size, shape, number and hairiness of leaflets. Therefore, the former is here reduced to a synonym of the latter.  相似文献

The type series of the speciesBrachinecta santacrucensis César 1987, is compared with specimens ofBranchinecta granulosa Daday 1902 collected near Facundo, Chubut Province, Argentina. The great resemblance between them suggest that both sets of material belong to the same species and therefore,B. santacrucensis andB. granulosa are synonyms.  相似文献

Pisolithus basidiomes were found under different forest trees in Hokkaido Island, Japan. These basidiomes were characterized morphologically and molecularly. Although presenting different basidiome morphology and growing under different hosts, specimens presented similar spores ornamentation, and diameters. These spores had coarse, crowded, and blunted spines with three to eight basidiospores per basidium. Ribosomal DNA-based phylogenetic analysis indicated that variability of Pisolithus in this area is low. Phylogenetic analysis showed that Pisolithus analyzed in this study did not group with Pisolithus specimens from other geographical origins. These results suggest that Pisolithus from this area should be taxonomically distinguished from other Pisolithus.  相似文献

The biodiversity crisis has had particularly harsh impacts on marine environments. However, there is still considerable uncertainty about how many species have been seriously impacted and the effectiveness of protection measures (e.g., marine protected areas or MPAs) due to high levels of cryptic species in many taxa. Here, we employ an integrative taxonomy approach to mullet species in the genus Mugil. In addition to its high economic value, this genus is notable for having diversified ~29 million years ago without marked morphological and ecological divergence. We obtained 129 specimens of Mugil from the Coral Coast MPA, the largest of its kind in the Tropical Southwestern Atlantic marine province. Although morphometric and meristic traits revealed six taxonomically recognized species, only five mitochondrial lineages were observed. All individuals morphologically identified as M. incilis belonged to the mitochondrial lineage of Mugil curema, which is consistent with misidentification of morphologically similar species and an overestimation of species diversity. Remarkably, Mugil species in our sample that diverged up to ~23 million years ago are also the most morphologically similar (M. curema and M. rubrioculus), suggesting extreme morphological conservatism, possibly driven by similarities in habitat use and life‐history traits. This study demonstrates the potential utility of integrative taxonomy (including DNA barcoding) for contributing to the conservation and sustainable use of natural resources.  相似文献

Introduction. During a field excursion in Guizhou Province, China, we collected some interesting moss specimens with branch leaves subulate in the upper part, partially and variably bistratose laminae, and a Macromitrium-like epiphytic growth habit on tree trunks. We present morphological and phylogenetic arguments for recognising these plants as a new moss species in the genus Macromitrium Brid. (Orthotrichaceae).

Methods. We compared the morphology of the potential new species with closely related species of Macromitrium, and constructed a phylogenetic tree based on ITS2, trnL and trnG including sampling from 14 other morphologically similar species of Macromitrium.

Key results. The proposed new species belongs to the genus Macromitrium (Orthotrichaceae, Musci). It is closely related to M. gymnostomum Sull. & Lesq. in the phylogenetic tree and according to gametophytic morphological features, represents a hitherto undescribed species.

Conclusions. A new moss species, Macromitrium maolanense Zeyou Zhang, D.D.Li, Jing Yu & S.L.Guo, is described and illustrated. The new species can be distinguished from all congeners by the combination of the following features of the branch leaves: (1) oblong-lanceolate, lanceolate to linear-lanceolate, gradually narrowed to an easily broken subula; (2) rather obscure upper and medial cells, often with blackish stains among cells, densely pluripapillose; (3) variably and partially bistratose laminae in the upper 1/3 portion; (4) basal cells clear, hyaline and smooth, those near costae forming a ‘cancellina region’; and (5) with numerous brownish, clavate gemmae on upper portion. We also discuss the principal distinctive characters separating the new species from its nearest congeners.  相似文献

The molluscan fauna of the Persian Gulf has recently been relatively well documented, yet there are few records of heterobranch sea slugs (opisthobranchs) from the Arabian parts and no report from the Iranian waters. Here we report for the first time the occurrence of one of these molluscs in the northern Persian Gulf (Bandar Abbas, Iran). Sacoglossan specimens were collected in association with the seaweed, Caulerpa sertularioides. Since morphological attributes were not adequately reliable for species identification, molecular approaches were carried out. Maximum-likelihood and Bayesian Inference analysis of partial DNA sequences of the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) locus were used for DNA barcoding of large-bodied specimens of Elysia. All Persian Gulf specimens were genetically confirmed as Elysia cf. tomentosa sp. 5, one of at least five morphologically similar but genetically distinct species in the taxonomically challenging and unresolved E. tomentosa complex. This species has previously been recorded only from Australia and Thailand and our finding adds another distant point to the geographic distribution of this species.  相似文献

Fourteen common southern Spanish species in theCistaceae were examined for quantitative variations in floral traits. These included the diameter of the corolla, number and size of anthers, number of ovules, and the size and shape of the gynoecium. The variables were in most instances positively correlated, species with larger flowers having more and larger anthers, more ovules, etc. Shrubs were observed to possess the largest, annuals the smallest, and subshrubs medium-sized flowers. Detailed observations of flower structure and function in a shrub (Cistus salvifolius), a spring-annual (Tuberaria guttata) and a winter-annual (T. inconspicua), revealed substantial variations in the breeding system. WhileC. salvifolius (and probably most woody species in this family) presents self-incompatibility, annual species ofTuberaria are self-compatible. In the studied population,T. inconspicua plants bore only reduced, cleistogamous flowers with no sign of a corolla.T. guttata has chasmogamous flowers that can facultatively self-pollinate.  相似文献

The lobate lac scale Paratachardina pseudolobata Kondo & Gullan (Kerriidae) is a polyphagous pest of woody plants in Florida (U.S.A.) the Bahamas, Christmas Island (Australia) and it has been reported from Cuba. Its recent appearance as a pest in these places indicates that this scale is introduced; however, its native range is unknown. Until 2006, this pest species was identified mistakenly as Paratachardina lobata (Chamberlin) [now P. silvestri (Mahdihassan)], which is native to India and Sri Lanka. Quarantine laboratory acceptance trials with Indian P. silvestri parasitoids indicated a strong immune response from P. pseudolobata. Gregarious development of encyrtid wasps was the only observed parasitism, but parasitization levels were below 3%. Identification of the native range of P. pseudolobata would facilitate the search for natural enemies better adapted to the scale. Sequence data from the D2–D3 region of the nuclear large subunit ribosomal RNA gene (LSU rRNA, 28S) and the mitochondrial gene cytochrome oxidase I (COI) distinguished P. pseudolobata from the morphologically similar species P. silvestri and P. mahdihassani Kondo & Gullan, and showed P. pseudolobata to be more closely related to these Indotropical species than to an Australian species of Paratachardina Balachowsky. Paratachardina pseudolobata was genetically uniform throughout its exotic range, consistent with a single geographic origin, although lack of variation in these genes is not unusual for scale insects. Molecular identification of morphologically similar Paratachardina species was possible using the D2–D3 region of 28S, despite its length variation, suggesting that this gene region might be suitable as a non-COI barcoding gene for scale insects.  相似文献
