AdultGlossina morsitans morsitans exposed to wet conidia ofBeauveria bassiana andMetarhizium anisopliae suffered high mortalities ranging from 90 to 100% by 2 weeks post-exposure. Infected ♂ ♂ maintained in the same cages with non-infected ♀♀ throughout the experimental period transmitted the fungal infection to the ♀♀ resulting in mortalities of 65% withB. bassiana and 55% withM. anisopliae. Likewise, infected ♀♀ maintained together with non-infected ♂♂ transmitted the infection to the ♂♂ resulting in mortalities of 75% withB. bassiana and 45% withM. anisopliae. Female tsetse flies infected withB. bassiana andM. anisopliae and maintained in the same cages with non-infected ♀♀ also transmitted infection to the non-infected tsetse resulting in mortalities of 62% and 48% withB. bassiana andM. anisopliae respectively. Infected tsetse exposed to non-infected tsetse of the opposite sex for only 30 min were also able to transmit the fungal infection. Pupae produced by female tsetse infected withB. bassiana andM. anisopliae exhibited higher pupal mortality than those produced by non-infected ♀♀. However, pupae exposed directly to dry spores ofB. bassiana andM. anisopliae had no increase in pupal mortality but adults emerging from theB. bassiana-exposed pupae had markedly reduced longevity.   相似文献

Encarsia pergandiella Howard females develop as primary parasitoids of immature whiteflies, whereas ♀♀ develop as secondary parasitoids on ♂♂ of their own species or on other primary whitefly parasitoids. In this experiment, maleE. pergandiella development was examined in the laboratory at 24°C, using different stages of immatureE. pergandiella females [enclosed within the cuticle ofTrialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood)] as hosts. Unmated adult femaleE. pergandiella were caged individually for 24 h on leaves of plants with either 5-day (early to late 3rd instar larval), 7-day (late 3rd instar to prepupal), or 9-day (pupal) hosts. In a control treatment, hosts were allowed to complete development without exposure to unmated adult females. Subsequent emergence of ♂♂ (hosts) and ♀♀ from all treatments was recorded daily. Pupal (9-day)E. pergandiella females were found to be the most suitable hosts for development of ♀♀. Nine- and 7-day hosts were attacked at a similar rate, as indicated by a similarly low proportion of host emergence, but ♀♀ emerged at a significantly higher rate in the 9-day treatment than in the 7-day treatment. Development time of ♀♀ was 15±1 days in the 9-day treatment, and 16±1 days in the 7-day treatment (p<0.005). The proportion of hosts emerging from the 5-day treatment was not significantly different from the control treatment. The data suggest that the colonizing ability ofE. pergandiella in greenhouses is likely to be limited by the delay of 7–9 days between oviposition of female eggs and the suitability of these ♂♂ for oviposition of male eggs. Since development time of the 2 sexes is similar this delay should cause a lack of synchrony in the emergence and mating of F1 ♂♂ and ♀♀.   相似文献

Studies were conducted on the solitary egg-larval endoparasitoidPhanerotoma hendecasisella Cam. [Hymenoptera: Braconidae] to determine its biology onDiaphania indica (Saunders) [Lepidoptera: Pyralidae]. Larvae pass through 3 stages as determined by the shape and size of the mandibles. Mean developmental period from egg to adult was 26.51 days at 26.06 °C and 73.88% RH. There is no preoviposition period. The sex ratio was 1∶1.12 (male/female). Mean adult longevity was not different for ♂♂ and ♀♀.   相似文献

Field collections in Puerto Rico revealed 4 behaviorally distinct isolates ofMuscidifurax uniraptor Kogan & Legner that differed initially in diapause and nondiapause emergence, and the age when ♀ progeny were produced. Subsequent F1 and F2 progeny differed in sex ratio and total progeny production. Mating F2 ♀ ♀ from nondiapause isolates to naturally emerging ♂ ♂ from thelytokous populations significantly reduced total progeny and the proportion of ♀ ♀ toca. 20 %. These mated ♀ ♀ at first resembled in behavior those which originated from diapausing parents. Random mating within all isolates beginning in the F3, resulted in a general lower survival and progeny production but was accompanied by a rise in sex ratio toca. 50% ♀ ♀ by the F6 generation. The interinvolvement of extranuclear and genic factors is considered.   相似文献

Progeny production increased and adult longevity decreased with rising temperature within the range 18°C to 30°C for the 3 mealybug parasitoidsAnagyrus pseudococci (Girault),Leptomastix dactylopii Howard andLeptomastidea abnormis (Girault). The Weibull distribution gave a good fit to survival curves for the 3 parasitoids and statistical comparison of Weibullb andc parameters at different temperatures allowed changes in the scale and shape of the curves to be detected. In general, ♀♀ lived longer than ♂♂ for all 3 species, except at high temperature. FemaleL. abnormis attained their maximum progeny production at 24°C and maintained this level up to 34°C. They lived longer than the other 2 parasitoid species at 30°C and showed a type I survival curve throuhout the range of temperatures examined.A. pseudococci andL. dactylopii both required high temperatures (30°C) to attain their maximal progeny production, but werepseudococci tended towards type II, with a larger proportion of the population dying within the first few days.L. dactylopii lived longest at 26°C, with ♀♀ showing a type I survival curve at all temperatures and ♂ survival curves changing from type I to type II at 30°C. The implications of these findings for the population dynamics of the different parasitoids are briefly discussed.   相似文献

The egg parasitoid,Platytelenomus busseolae (Gahan) (Hymenoptera: Scelionidae) was recorded from egg masses of the corn stalk borer,Sesamia nonagrioides (Lefebvre) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) on maize in the area of Istiaea, Central Greece. Natural parasitism was studied during the years 1986, 1987. A total of 3,382 egg masses, containing 205,227 eggs, was collected from corn fields. Parasitized eggs were found from end July to mid-October. In 1986. 76.2% of the egg masses and 42.8% of all eggs were parasitized, while in 1987, respective values were 27.6% and 12.9%. The inferior performance of the parasitoid in 1987 may be due to the unfavorable winter and summer conditions. Parasitism decreased when the host population was at its peak, but it increased again within 1 to 3 weeks. A small percentage of egg masses was completely parasitized (9.5% and 4.7% for the 2 years respectively). In 1987, the sex ratio, ♀♀/♂♂ was 1.5: 1 and 26.2% of the egg masses produced only ♂♂. Mated ♀♀ produced 3 times more ♀♀ than ♂♂. It seems that the parasitoid, under favorable weather conditions, can play a significant role in the control of the corn stalk borer.   相似文献

The fresh frozen egg of the tobacco hornworm (TBH)Manduca sexta (L.), is an efficient and superior host for mass production ofTrichogramma nubilale Ertle & Davis. Each host egg may produce 10.7±2.8 (n=7) large, robust, and activeT. nubilale. The proportion of ♀♀ stabilized at 80–90% with 69.9±26.6 (n=8) ovarian eggs per female. As many as 3 ♀♀ were observed ovipositing simultaneously into a single TBH egg. Superparasitism (>10 progeny) should be avoided because it may cause nutritional or space limitations on the development of effectiveT. nubilale.   相似文献

Trichogramma buesi was reared in the laboratory on eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth,Anagasta kuehniella. The incubation period of the parasite's egg was 27 h at 23 °C and 22 h at 27 °C. The larval stage lasted 3.6 and 3.2 days, the pre-pupa lasted 16 and 23 h, and the pupa lasted 5.4 and 4.6 days at 23° and 27°C, respectively. The total developmental time (from egg to adult) averaged 9.2, 9.4, and 9.1 days when the parasite was reared on eggs ofPieris rapae, Spodoptera littoralis, andA. kuehniella, respectively, at 27 °C. Sex ratio inT. buesi was 1 ♂: 1 ♀ in nature and 1 ♂: 1.3 ♀ in the laboratory. The daily and total numbers or progeny produced/female were 5.1 and 98.2 adults, respectively. The parasite female, fed on honey, lived 10.7 days at 27 °C and 12.1 days at 23 °C. Percentages of parasitism byT. buesi on eggs ofP. rapae collected from cabbage fields ranged between 0 and 31.5 % in 1985 and betwcen 0 and 36.4% in 1986 during July through December. The respective figures on eggs collected from turnip fields were 16–42.2% and 12.5–32.1% during November and December.   相似文献

Amblyseius barkeri (Hughes) fed onThrips tabaci (Lind.) at 25°C showed an average duration of 2.2, 0.8 and 3.2 days for the egg, larval and nymphal stages, with mortalities at 1.0, 1.0 and 3.1%, respectively. Females represented 63% of the population and required multiple matings for optimal fertility. The oviposition period was 20.3 days and the average oviposition rate 2.3 eggs per day. The intrinsic rate of increase was 0.22 per day. The expected life span was 29.6 days for ♀♀ and 27.4 days for ♂♂.A. barkeri ♂♂ and ♀♀ both consumed 3.3 nymphs of thrips per day (mean value for the feeding stages). The larva does not take up food. In the absence of thripsA. barkeri was able to consume two-spotted spider mites,Tetranychus urticae (Koch), and their eggs, adult broad mites,Polyphagotarsonemus latus (Banks), and pollen of various plants. Cannibalism was observed when food was lacking. Certain morphological features, egglaying, mating and predatory behaviour are described.   相似文献

Various aspects of the parasitims of caterpillars ofAscia monuste orseis byCotesia ayerzai, were studied in laboratory choice tests. Individual ♂♂ were found to be extremely variable in ovipositional duration, as well as in the number of eggs oviposited. To simulate parasitoid dispersal, or low host density, we isolated ♂♂ for 60 min following initial exposure and compared our tests with ♂♂ which had not been isolated. No differences in (1) the number of eggs oviposited per host instar; (2) the conditional probability of host encounter; (3) host acceptance; and (4) the conditional probability of instar specific parasitism were found between these groups. Held ♂♂ did, however, reject hosts after ovipositor insertions in a higher proportion.   相似文献

Laboratory-rearedBiosteres tryoni (Cameron) reached peak ovarian maturation on the 5th and 7th days after emergence in unmated and mated ♀♀, respectively. When ♀♀ were not allowed to oviposit, contents of the oocytes were hydrolyzed and reabsorbed. However, when hosts were available for oviposition a significant increase of egg maturation rate was noticed. Mean realized fecundity during the life span was 71.7±8.1 and 69.0±6.7, and mean longevity was 13.5±0.9 and 15.1±0.6 days for mated and unmated ♀♀ respectively.   相似文献

At 21 °C,Spalangia nigra Latreille (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) averaged 29.3 days between exposure and emergence of 1st progeny from host house flies,Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae). At 27 °C, the average developmental time to 1st emergence was reduced to 26.6 days, and a majority of adult wasps emerged from host house fly puparia between 29 and 40 days postoviposition. The sex ratio of progeny ranged from 1.4 to 1.8 female-to-male, but all progeny of virgin females were male. Male wasps lived from 6.8–15 and females 11–17.8 days at 27 °C; honey as a food source increased longevity. No significant differences in parasitism byS. nigra were associated with host house fly pupal densities ranging from 1 to 200 pupae per female-male pair of wasps, but average percent parasitism decreased at host densities greater than 50. House fly pupae exposed to parasitism at ages ranging from 4 to 96 h did not differ in subsequent production of adult flies.S. nigra did not demonstrate preference for house flies or stable flies,Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) (Diptera: Muscidae) as hosts. The results of these studies indicate thatS. nigra may contribute significantly to previously unexplained mortality of house flies and stable flies.   相似文献

Consumption of larvae and females ofAphis craccivora Koch by 1st and 4th larvae and adults ofCheilomenes vicina (Muls.) was studied under fluctuating temperature (24–30°C). The early aphid instars were consumed in significantly greater numbers than later instars and females. The feeding rates ofC. vicina were significantly positively correlated with the population density of prey. The number of prey consumed daily by each predator stage tested, increased more steeply at lower than at higher prey densities, exhibiting thus the type 2 functional response

We studied inheritance of resistance to dicrotophos in greenhouse whitefly,Trialeurodes vaporariorum Westwood (Homoptera, Aleyrodidae). Compared with females from a field-collected susceptible strains (S), females from a resistant strain (R) ofT. vaporariorum derived from heavily treated cotton fields had a 28-fold greater LC50 to dicrotophos in laboratory bioassays. Concentration-mortality lines obtained from female progeny of reciprocal F1 crosses (R XS and S XR) were similar, suggesting that inheritance of dicrotophos resistance was autosomal and not influenced by maternal effects. Responses of F1 female progeny were similar to those of the parental S strain, indicating that the resistance was partially recessive (degree of dominance, D, was −0.61). Mortality observed in female progeny obtained from a backcross (F1♀ XR) corresponded more closely to expectations derived from polygenic models than to expectations from a monogenic model. The estimated number of effective factors (sensu Lande, 1981) contributing equally to resistance was three.  相似文献

Hybrid ♀♀ from cohorts of solitary and gregarious populations ofMuscidifurax raptorellus harboring one-half the genome of either parent, are accompanied in emergence by ♂♂ most typical of the original female parent used to create the hybrid. However, these ♂♂ also show small influences of their mother's mating partner. This suggests the existence of a extranuclear phase to the inheritance of gregarious oviposition in this species, and biparental influences in the hymenopteran male.

The rearing ofRaphitelus maculatus Walker, which oviposits through the bark onto beetle larvae has been carry out under standard laboratory conditions of 22 ± 2°C, 60% R.H. and photoperiod 16L∶8D. The host (Phloeotribus scarabaeoides Bernard) has been reared by cutting fresh branches of living olive tree on which they overwinter as adults. The effect of several rearing conditions (feeding conditions) on longevity and fecundity has been tested. The time of parasitoid and host development as well as the periods of emergence from the infested cut branches has been determined. It has been noted that both longevity and fecundity are influenced by the feeding conditions, reaching toca. double value when parasitoids were fully fed. Under standard rearing conditionsR. maculatus completes its life cycle in 17–18 days depending on sex, whereasP. scarabaeoides takes about 48 days. Finally 3 emergence periods has been observed from which the 1st is the most important and the 3rd is always the less significantly one, provided that the emerging brood cannot oviposits easier than the parents due to a decrease on host larvae proportion as well as on parasitoid fecundity.   相似文献

Townesilitus bicolor (Wesmael), a parasite of some crucifer-infesting species ofPhyllotreta in Europe, was released in Manitoba Canada in 1978–83, in an attempt to reduce populations ofPhyllotreta cruciferae (Goeze) andP. striolata (Fab.). Releases totalled 1936 adults ofT. bicolor and approximately 2639Phyllotreta collected in Manitoba and parasitized in the laboratory. No evidence of establishment was found up to 1985 at either of the 2 release sites. The small numbers of parasite released, and dispersal of the host population twice each year, have reduced the probability of the parasite becoming established and of establishment being detected. The development rate from egg to adult for ♂ and ♀Chromatomyia (Phytomyza) syngenesiae andDiglyphus isaea increased linearly between 19 and 25°C.D. isaea had a faster developmental rate thanC. syngenesiae between 19 and 25°C but therer was no difference at 16°C. FemaleD. isaea required 154.6 D° above the theoretical threshold of 12.80°C and maleD. isaea 152.4 D° above 12.9°C for total development from egg to adult emergence. FemaleC. syngenesiae needed 207.0 D° above 12°C and ♂ and 211.0 D° above 11.6°C for total development.   相似文献

Arrhenotokously reproducing Hymenoptera and Acarina include many important natural enemies. This reproductive system offers the opportunity of selection on hemizygous (♂ ♂), with the attendant advantages of an unmasked genotype fully exposed to selection, in creased frequency of genotypes expressing rare genes, and enhanced discrimination of characters, in all-♂ populations produced by virgin (♀ ♀). Increased selection intensity and reduced genetic drift may offer additional advantages. The method is limited to characters displayed by (♂ ♂), and may require labor-intensive techniques and species-specific research. The method has been shown to be practicable withAphytis holoxanthus DeBach (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae), an important parasite of the Florida red scale,Chrysomphalus aonidum (L.) (Homoptera: Diaspididae).   相似文献

Aleochara sp. from southern Africa is a potential candidate for introduction to Australia for control of the Australian buffalo fly,Haematobia irritans exigua De Meijere. Aspects of its host searching and acceptance behaviour were studied in South Africa usingHaematobia thirouxi potans (Bezzi), to assess, in part, its potential value as a biological control agent and to provide a basis for the development of a mass rearing technique. First instars ofAleochara sp. were found to parasitize most effectively those hosts that had buried themselves in the substrate, probably by orienting to a chemical cue and using the tunnels made by the post-feeding larvae. Lower rates of parasitization occurred in pupae placed on the surface of the substrate or buried by the experimenters. They would accept, parasitize and develop on all ages ofH. thirouxi potans pupae, but showed reduced survival in the very oldest ones. Although there was no difference in relative acceptability among hosts of different ages, a higher proportion of younger hosts were parasitized when these had buried themselves, probably due to a tendency of the parasitoids to follow fresher tunnels into the substrate. Survival was high (>80%) at relative humidities from 10–91% but was less than 20% at an R.H. of 100%. In rearing trials, the most economical ratio of parasitoid eggs: hosts was 1∶1.5, with 70% of the parasitoids developing successfully to adults.   相似文献
